The role of the mother in our lives is so important as they give us love, support, and values. I’m so lucky to have my mom close to me and my kids as she is an extraordinary grandmother. I’m also lucky to have my two grandmothers as they are an inspiration of unconditional love. I can’t ask for more in life but to be able to be a mother! My two kids are the reason for everything I do each day. When you read page 8 you are going to have a smile on your face with the answers to some of the questions our writer Diane Landsberg asked kids, including mine, about what they think about their moms and mother’s day. Ask this question to your kids and you will be surprised with the concepts they have about the meaning of “mother”. Talking about mothers, on page 18 you will find a great interview we did with the beautiful and talented Laurie Jennings, news anchor on Channel 10, and a mother of identical twins. As most of you know, one of the reasons I created the magazine is to support exceptional kids and their families. On April 2, we celebrate Autism Awareness Day and on page 15 we have a great article written by a mother who went through a roller-coaster of emotions after her son was diagnosed with autism. This story will allow most of us to appreciate how lucky we are as mothers and how special are the mommy’s with exceptional kids. We want to invite you on April 6 to join us at our Easter and Summer Camp Expo at Sunset Place in South Miami which is open to everyone and especially to our exceptional kids. We are going to have an egg hunt for kids in wheelchairs or other devices, so they can pick up their eggs by themselves! We can’t wait to celebrate with all of you and enjoy all of the fun surprises we have for all the families. As always, thank you to each of you who read and follow our magazine. Soon it will be Mother’s Day on May 12, 2019. It is necessary to plan and organize a little to properly celebrate our special Mothers. I love this anonymous quote, “It is never easy being a Mother. If it were easy, Fathers would do it.” Please know there is no intention here to insult Fathers! There is also an old Jewish proverb that is both profound and so very true, “A mother understands what a child does not say.” In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day to be held on the second Sunday of May each year as a national holiday to honor Mothers. A smart move! Every family has their own way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Many take Mom to a favorite restaurant for her favorite meal and buy presents, all of which can be expensive. Here is a suggestion for something special that is much more personal. With some assistance from Dad, the kids can write something on a card they can make. They can then record

a video on Dad’s cell phone singing a song and telling Mom how much they love her. I guarantee that she will treasure it forever. I also asked several children a few questions for their thoughts about Mother’s Day: Can you tell me what Mother’s Day Is? “It is a holiday for Mothers.” Mia, age 9 “It is like every Mom has a birthday that day and gets presents.” Jonathan, age 10 What is the best thing you can say about your Mother? “My Mom is really pretty and really smart.” Kenneth, age 7 “Sometimes she’s drama and I love her.” Luca, age 8 “She’s beautiful!” Elle, age 9 What are you going to do for your Mom on Mother’s Day? “I will have to ask my Dad. Study Highlight: In a large observational study, women who reported drinking more than one diet soda or other artificially sweetened drink a day had a higher risk of strokes caused by a blood clot. Among post-menopausal women, drinking multiple diet drinks daily was associated with an increase in the risk of having a stroke caused by a blocked artery, especially small arteries, according to research published in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association. This is one of the first studies to look at the association between drinking artificially sweetened beverages and the risk of specific types of stroke in a large, racially diverse group of post-menopausal women. While this study identifies an association between diet drinks and stroke, it does not prove cause and effect because it was an observational study based on self-reported information about diet drink consumption. Compared with women who consumed diet drinks less than once a week or not at all, women who consumed two or more artificially sweetened beverages per day were 23 percent more likely to have a stroke. And 29 percent more likely to develop heart disease (fatal or non-fatal heart attack.) “Many well-meaning people, especially those who are overweight or obese,
drink low-calorie sweetened drinks to cut calories in their diet. Our research and other observational studies have shown that artificially sweetened beverages may not be harmless and high consumption is associated with a higher risk of stroke and heart disease,” said Yasmin MossavarRahmani, Ph.D., lead author of the study and associate professor of clinical epidemiology and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. Researchers analyzed data on 81,714 postmenopausal women (age 50-79 years at the start) participating in the Women’s Health Initiative study that tracked health outcomes for an average of 11.9 years after they enrolled between 1993 and 1998. “Unfortunately, current research simply does not provide enough evidence to distinguish between the effects of different low-calorie sweeteners on heart and brain health. This study adds to the evidence that limiting use of diet beverages is the most prudent thing to do for your health,” said Rachel K. Johnson, Ph.D., R.D., professor of nutrition emeritus, University of Vermont and the chair of the writing group for the American Heart Association’s science advisory, Low-Calorie Sweetened Beverages and Cardiometabolic Health.

Eddie’s World By Adriana Imbert
M
y youngest son Eddie James Alford IV has autism and this was all new to me. When Eddie was 18 months old, I noticed that he was not developing as an 18-month-old child. I told his primary doctor that I noticed a delay in Eddie’s behavior and he responded that Eddie is fine, but I was not convinced being that I had an older child. After doing some research, I discovered that Eddie’s behavior was very similar to something called Autism. At 18 months, he had no eye contact, flapping of the hands, the ahh sound, and he was speaking less saying practically no words. This caused Eddie to get very upset and have tantrums because he was unable to communicate his feelings. I then found out about Early Steps program. After his evaluation, they had confirmed it was too early to diagnose Autism but it seemed that Eddie did have a developmental delay. They advised me to take him to a Neurologist when he turned four for an accurate diagnosis and the Neurologist did confirm my Motherly instincts that Eddie did indeed have mild Autism. Early detection is key and getting the proper care and therapy services at an early age makes a tremendous difference to see better progression. After I was told that my son had Autism I cried, I was so down and depressed. I had missed experiencing those first-time baby & toddler memorable moments that a parent looks forward to. I would ask myself why God, why me. I don’t smoke, I hardly drink alcohol, I took care of myself during my pregnancy, and I am a good person. Why me? Why is this happening to me and one day someone gave me the perfect advice: GOD WON’T GIVE YOU MORE THAN YOU CAN HANDLE - An Autistic child is very special and only special parents are blessed and are chosen to raise these wonderful children. After that response my whole perspective of having an Autistic child changed. His older brother Daniel has been such a wonderful influence on Eddie. Eddie has long days of therapy and can become easily stressed. He requires a very strict schedule to continue his progress. Making sure Eddie gets all the services he needs has become very challenging as a parent when you must dedicate more time and patients to them. Every day is challenging being always concerned that people would not understand Eddie’s behavior. My biggest concern is will Eddie be able to take care of himself if I am not around, but every day he proves me wrong. Eddie is an amazing, smart, and kind boy. He is now 9 years old and always happy and smiling. With the love and dedication of his passionate teachers one in particular, Mrs. Jaime Trotz, Eddie makes the Honor Roll every grading period and received a Core Values of Citizenship Award this year. As a parent, you must be very involved, accept your child’s conditions and dedicate as much time as possible to make sure the child receives the attention they need. This is a major factor and it’s the greatest impact in their progress. I love being a part of Eddies World... I am a proud Mom of an Autistic Boy!!!!

do you divide your time between 3. How being a mother and your job as a journalist?. The only way to make it all work is to sacrifice sleep! I anchor the 4, 5, 6 & 11pm newscasts every weeknight, so I can never pick them up after school or be there to start homework. The least I can do is get up early and take them to school, but that means only about 5 hours of sleep a night. I literally schedule “nap” on my I-phone calendar here and there — and once in a while, I get it!

I grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut — a suburb of New York City. After graduating from Greenwich High, I went on to Cornell University as a government major and then earned a masters in journalism at Northwestern University.

At Cornell, I tried my hand at radio newscasting because I loved to write, and that led to my first TV news internship. The newsroom was filled with cigarette smoke, pizza boxes, loud typewriters and police scanners – I loved it!! I was hooked on the adrenaline-filled atmosphere and the breaking news when you least expect it! So, I got my master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and moved my life to a town I had never heard of — Youngstown, Ohio — to start off in my first newsroom as a general assignment reporter.
I wouldn’t trade identical twin boys for anything -- it’s one adventure after the next. But with twins you always know you only get *one shot* at everything — there’s no figuring it out with the first child and then doing things better with the next ones! And you always want them to be their own person and have their own activities, but it’s SO much easier if they’re involved in the same things and you don’t have to run in two totally different directions every minute! For all the challenges of twins, the bonus is that they always have someone to play with, to fight with, and to laugh with -- there’s never a dull moment!!

Tell us about your mother and how she is involved in your and your children’s lives?.
My beautiful mom, Marilyn, just turned 80 and is finally beginning to spend her winters in Florida! She is a total Grandma in every sense of the word. She teaches her grandsons how to bake cookies and plays tennis and ping pong with them. And
in exchange, they teach her how to use her I-pad and I-phone! My mom was stuck in the hospital for months here in Florida two years ago and we almost lost her. It really taught my boys to cherish every minute with their grandparents.

My boys are 13 now, so we can really get a good game of doubles tennis going, or a long bike ride, or a few holes of golf -- they LOVE getting to drive the carts!

CONI GOUDIE, the face behind Gymboree Play & Music in Miami

Last year, Gymboree Play & Music in Miami celebrated its 40th anniversary being the premier childhood learning chain in the United States, and a global leader in early childhood learning. The company strives to bring fun, music and play to early childhood education. Today, nearly 2000 children are currently enrolled in program.
Ms. Coni Ensor Goudie is the face behind the Gymboree Play & Music franchise in Miami, Florida. As the CEO, she has led the company to surpass one million dollars in revenue. Through the years, she has multiplied her play center locations while personally investing time and leadership in community and childhood related philanthropic organizations. For more than three decades, Coni’s business accomplishments have defied the odds of most small businesses, while impacting thousands of families’ lives in the greater Miami community. Through the years, her company has expanded to include Gymboree Play & Music locations in Coral Gables (at the Village of Merrick Park), Kendall, and Palmetto Bay. The Palmetto Bay center introduced a host of new services which incorporated enhanced teaching curricula, and a new line of custom designed play equipment created to maximize physical and academic learning. As an internal role model, Coni’s work is consistently recognized at the annual Gymboree Play & Music Franchisee Seminar. As one of the top international franchisees in
the system, she has a collection of awards in every category including Highest Overall Enrollments, Largest Birthday Party Revenue, and Highest Retail Sales. In 2014, Coni was awarded by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, Businesswoman of the Year. On a personal note, Coni was crowned Miss Florida as well as earned the prestigious title of Orange Bowl Queen. Coni has maintained a long-term commitment to the community and has passionately worked with non-profit and governmental organizations. For the past eight years, she has worked closely with the Children’s Trust and the Office of the Mayor of Miami. She has also served on many Charity Boards including, March of Dimes, JDRF and Jar of hearts. She has given many Gymboree scholarships at each of the three locations to families in need. Coni has made this an important part of the Gymboree Play & Music training as an example of giving back to the community. Coni is the mother of a daughter, Nicole and a son, Jeffrey and a new Grandson. These, in her opinion are her proudest accomplishments!

SOUTH FLORIDA 37TH ANNUAL RED CROSS BALL The Greater Miami & The Keys Chapter of the American Red Cross celebrated its 37th Annual Red Cross Ball – “Surround Yourself In Red” – on Saturday, March 16 at the InterContinental Miami. The fabulous event was follow by the 2nd annual Party In Red, the official afterparty of the Red Cross Ball where the city’s brightest young professionals gathered and continued the celebration. The Red Cross Ball raised funds for the American Red Cross’ disaster preparedness, response and recovery programs and services, continuing its tradition and commitment to Greater Miami & The Keys.
