Environment Creating Safe For Our Children
As every student and their parents prepare to return to school this fall, they all have something additional on their minds besides purchasing the next largest size of uniform, school supplies, and the coolest backpack.
In light of the latest, tragic events of school shootings, the teachers and administrators are greatly concerned about everyone’s safety. It is now necessary to have a serious discussion and a continuing dialog with your children to gauge how they are feeling and coping with this anxiety. It is critical that you create a safe space for them to come to you to discuss their fears or ask questions.
The loss of even one child is too many, but it is important to state that thousands of students attend school every day without incident. School districts are working hard to ensure everyone is safe and the only problem a child should face is to be forgetting to complete a homework assignment and receiving a slight reprimand.
Each school campus has strict rules, and it is necessary that everyone follows them. In the past when I was doing a special pickup of a grandchild, I signed in at the security desk and was directed to the main office and the child was brought to me. Parental involvement is always encouraged, and if you haven’t
in the past, this year join and support the school’s PTA, attend Back to School night, teacher-parent conference, and read all notices sent home in your child’s backpack or to your email. Miami-Dade Public Schools has a Parent Portal to log into and view which can provide invaluable information. Remember, your child spends more weekly waking hours in school than at home. You should want to cultivate a partnership in your child’s development.
Last words of advice….As much as your kids drive you crazy each morning with having to drag them out of bed, find the missing shoe, having the first argument of the day with a brother or sister, or messing up your just cleaned car by eating breakfast on the run, etc…Be sure to tell them you love them and wish them a good day with a smile.
I guarantee it will make everyone feel better!

Back to School Snacks and power energy breakfast ideas
By Maria Cummins The Real Food Academy
Food literally controls every function in the body and mind, so what you put on your fork is the most important thing you do every day! Now that our kids are going back to school is very important that they are nourished. Nothing has a greater impact on a child’s health than the food they eat. When they consume the right kinds of food, known as “real food” at The Real Food Academy, they will feel better, sleep better, think better, look better and ultimately reduce the chances of facing serious diseases later in life.
SNACKS
Serves 8 empanadas
4 apples.
1/2 cup brown sugar. 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon. Powder sugar (to sprinkle).
8 empanadas dough rounds (Store bought). 1 egg (for wash).
Preparation
Pre heat oven 400F
In a saucepan cook the apples with the sugar and cinnamon on medium heat. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until apples are soft and translucent. Let it cool off.
Place about 2 tablespoons of apple filing on one side of the dough. Fold it in half and curl up the edges of the empanada to seal it. You could use the end of a fork to press ends together and that way seal it.
Add egg wash to the top of each empanada. Bake for 11-12 minutes until golden. Sprinkle with powder sugar.
PIZZA ON STICKS
Pizza dough (All-purpose flour, for dusting 1 cup marinara sauce 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 3/4 cup chopped pepperoni and any other topping Egg wash. Directions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut dough into 6 equal parts. Then each part rolls it out into 6-7 inch squares. Brush each square of dough with marinara sauce, leaving a 1/2-inch border all around; sprinkle with mozzarella. Layer a few pieces of pepperoni and any other topping you want. Slightly fold in the two far corners, then roll up the dough from the long side, like a burrito, until the filling is fully enclosed in a tube, pressing gently to seal. Carefully insert a Popsicle stick or wooden skewer into the center of each pizza roll and arrange on the prepared baking sheets. Brush with egg wash. Press any extra filling ingredients onto the rolls. Sprinkle with more mozzarella. Bake until golden, about 10-12 minutes.

After School Q & A With Josh D’Alemberte
Josh D’Alemberte, owner of Who Tutors and Phoenix Beach Volleyball, sits down for a Q&A about which after-school programs are best, what to look for and what to avoid in a program, the benefits, and how to encourage your child to pick an activity.
By
Josh, What Are the Benefits of Enrolling a child in an After-School Program?
Pursuing dreams, talents, and goals is possibly one of the most important life skills children should explore. As parents, it is our job to assist our children in seeking and adhering to something they enjoy. Exploring a passion allows a child to feel empowered and in control of their learning. When children discover something they love, it radiates from them, regardless of whether or not they are good at it. When a child is passionate about something, they are a force that can move mountains. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop”. Kids with too much time on their hands will likely act out and start getting into trouble.
When Should You Sign Your Child Up for After-School Activities?
As soon as possible. The activity depends on whether it is appropriate for your child at their age.
What Kind of Activities Should You Sign Your Child Up For?
It depends on their interests. The categories are Sports, Arts, Social, and Academic. The goal is to find something outside of school that they love, that they are good at, and make them a more complete person.
What Should I Look for in an AfterSchool Program?
Your after-school program should be clean, well organized, and communicate effectively.
Of course, the type of program and a convenient location is ideal but, you simply should look for people that love teaching your children something they are passionate about.
What Are the Warning Signs of a Bad Program?
Use common sense and trust your spidey sense. If something seems wrong it probably is. If an organization is chaotic or poorly communicated, that program might not be right for your situation. If you see the instructors get angry or say unkind things, when they think no one is watching, unenroll them immediately.
What if My Child Doesn’t Want an After School program?
Choices are appreciated by everyone. Rather than deciding what you want your child to do, give them choices and make them decide. If
they want to look into art, let them choose between drawing or painting. If they are interested in music, let them choose between piano, guitar, singing, or dancing. If they like sports the choices are numerous. However, trying something new is never easy. Make it clear that the child has to try it several times in order to be well informed about how much they will enjoy it. Encouraging your child to choose an activity and stick with it, will produce healthier and happier kids.
How many activities should your child be enrolled in during the school year? This depends on the family. I recommend at least one, but beware of overscheduling your child. A lack of creative time, down time, or free time to do fun things in or near their own home can lead to problems in the future when they are alone with nothing to do.

Creating a
Routine Healthy
Family
Holy cow!!! Is summer over already? Do I have to change back into a crazy super parent?
The short and long answer is no. Yes, it is true; children crave structure and even discipline. Not the kind of discipline where you hit your child; the kind of discipline a martial art tries to teach. It would help if you practiced what you want to improve on. Some easiest starting areas are food intake, exercise, non-device creative time, and bedtime.
Let’s chat quickly on all of these, and please keep in mind that this is just a short list of my thoughts. You should feel free to adjust the list according to what fits your family best.
FOOD INTAKE – Being mindful of your changing body will only help your child understand their own. Things like caffeine and sugar do not have many places in any diet, especially after 2:00pm. Balancing
your intake will serve you best. There are no excuses anymore, except you are too lazy to do some research and maybe a little scared to spend some money for expert advice. You go to a doctor, mechanic, school teacher, etc., but not a trainer or nutritionist. Some food for thought there.
EXERCISE - this goes right along with the food too. However, it doesn’t have to be a workout or a specific thing. You must move your body more than the norm for 30-60 minutes daily. Teach your children to make exercise a part of their day, a part of their lives, and they will NEVER leave it. Their health will increase almost immediately, and their life extends by the day.
NON-DEVICE CREATIVE TIME - this is my favorite thing on the list. Draw, color, read, create, Legos, clip the trees/bushes, cooking, etc. Anything that takes their eyes (and yours) off a screen and into your brain. Cause yourself to think. Consider exercise for the brain. And don’t tell me you have an app for that…
BEDTIME – is probably one of the most abusive things we do to our children. Children require a minimum of 10 hours of sleep to function daily and develop properly fully. I am going to say that again. Children need a minimum of 10 hours of sleep per day. If they have to get up at 7:00 AM to prepare for school, you should start their bedtime by 8:00 PM. It gives them time to chill, shower, brush teeth, read, talk to you, and get in bed well before 9:00 PM so they can fall asleep and get proper rest.
You are worth it. Your child is worth it. Help yourself this school year and start your school year by hitting the ground running. Get these habits in place now and keep them there. Write your goals down, put them somewhere easy to access, read them daily, and crush them. Your kids and your grandkids will thank you for it.
Peace and thanks.

A passion for the Arts Miami Fine Arts Academy
Alesya and Mauro, please tell us about Miami Fine Arts Academy. How did you start the business?
The idea of opening a school came from actual hardships during the recession time of 2008-2009 when I (Alesya Burgio) lost my employment as a music teacher working for a local private school. That year, I had an opportunity to focus on my private piano studio to make ends meet as no one was hiring.
A quote from Winston Churchill comes to mind, “Don’t let a good crisis go to waste,” and I saw a crisis of recession as an opportunity to develop something special. I was able to find a suitable space in Coral Gables and opened a small, 3-studio school in December 2009 specializing in piano lessons only. We called it Miami Piano Academy and hosted only 12 students. Mauro and I were just dating then,
and I was grateful for his volunteering of time and talent as a General Contractor and engineer, to shape this dream into a reality. Fast forward 13 years later, the initial concept developed into schools that now teach many musical instruments (piano, violin, voice, guitar, and drums) in additional to successful dance and art programs with over 1,300 students. We are currently looking for a 3rd location. Today, Mauro and I are happily married with 3 beautiful girls, Katarina (10), Nicole (7), and Giulietta (4).
How were you able to grow the company in this time frame?
Mauro and I are a great team. When taking calculated risks and brave decisions of opening a business, it is vital to surround yourself with great support systems of people who understand your vision and dreams. My
husband has been my support system and my rock throughout this process. Our distribution of roles is simple: I am a visionary who works daily on my leadership and business skills and develops other leaders in our business. Mauro’s role is slightly different. As a full-time employee of a successful local company, Mauro is more of an implementer of important decisions in growing our business, such as construction and technological needs.
What advice would you give to a parent and a child that likes music but is unsure what instrument they would like to learn to play?
Also, at what age do you recommend a child should start taking music lessons? It is not that important what instrument the child chooses, it is, however, more important for the child to have a great support system
Miami Kids Magazine August-September 202222
from the parents in ensuring that consistent learning takes place. At our schools, our friendly office team is trained to ask leading questions to help parents select the right program or instrument and match them with the right teacher. We start our music and dance students as early as 18 months. If children change their minds about a particular program, as they often do, we have the flexibility of transitioning them to another program the next month.
The biggest mistake parents often make is to allow their children to quit a challenging skill before seeing actual results and return on their investment. We live in a world of instant gratification and success. Challenging skills are not developed instantaneously and require considerable personal and financial investment. But, we can reassure parents that the return on their investment is much greater than they could ever imagine. They just need to be patient enough to see it through. Our students are accepted to public magnet schools and reputable private schools; they develop invaluable life skills that aid in their successful careers and even personal lives, such as self-esteem, confidence, persistence and perseverance, hard work, and much more. Our students often get a full scholarship to prestige colleges, and we even have our former students return to us to teach at our Fine Arts Academies.
Tell us more about your other programs, art, and dance. Are these programs for certain age groups? Can anyone join the group at any time of the year?
Our dance programs begin with our most popular two programs: Mommy & Me dance classes and Angelina Ballerina, a licensed program, accepting children 2 years old up to Ballet Division 4. My 3 daughters went through these programs and continue to take dance classes now. As a mom of 3 girls, I highly recommend these fantastic opportunities for the kids to move, develop grace, to learn to carry themselves with confidence and great posture, and develop healthy life habits early in life. Our art programs begin with 5-year-old children taking their first steps in Drawing and Mixed Media techniques up to Portfolio Ready where we prepare children for magnet schools and colleges, or for more serious artists.
Leave a final message. Tell us why parents should select Miami Fine Arts Academy as the right art school for their families. As you can see, we have a variety of options for parents with different economic needs. We conveniently offer a variety of options for families with many children. We are a 12-month out-of-the-year school,
and anyone can join us and take a break throughout the year. Depending on your entry, we will guide you as to when your child will be able to participate in a musical recital, a dance show, or an art gallery. Our concerts and galleries are hosted in the best professional concert venues, not only locally but across the nation, such as Carnegie Hall or Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Center.
We count on amazing and talented professionals. What separates us from the rest is our tireless search for the best talent in the nation.
After all, our mission is “to offer the highest value and standards of excellence and to positively influence and inspire those who wish to be EXTRAORDINARY.”
Mauro and I want for your children what we wish for our own 3 daughters. We invite you to experience us by reaching out to our Miami location at 786.464.0566 info@miamifineartsacademy.com or at the Doral location at 786.677.4040 info@ doralfineartsacademy.com.

South Florida
kicks off the new school year with a wellness commitment
Kids Heart Challenge targets students’ mental and physical wellness.
Last year, over 160 Broward County and Miami-Dade schools participated in Kids Heart Challenge™ a program designed to support students’ longterm mental and physical health while raising funds to support the mission of the American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all. South Florida schools will again start the year off participating in KHC.
The American Heart Association’s school-based program, Kids Heart Challenge™, offers a variety of physical activities to get elementary students’ hearts pumping such as dance, basketball, or jumping rope paired with digital missions to learn life-saving skills like Hands-Only CPR™ and how to spot a stroke. The program has more than 40 years of proven success rooted in scientific research which showed that kids who are regularly active feel better, improve their mental health, build self-esteem, and decrease and prevent conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Funds raised through the Kids Heart Challenge allow the student to support wellness beyond themselves and be a part of the solution by funding making funding research possible on a path to improving cardiovascular health for all.
The educational curriculum and physical activities included in the Kids Heart Challenge program helps meet the needs of today’s youth and educators. The program, a successful part of thousands of schools from
coast-to-coast, targets improving wholebody wellness which is vital to drive immediate and long-term health in children. With deep roots in physical activity, the program has expanded over the years to additionally support student mental health through social and emotional learning.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, only 20% of kids get enough activity to meet physical activity recommendations. In addition to improved physical health, the benefits of physical activity for children include better grades, school attendance, and classroom behavior.
To learn more about the Kids Heart Challenge or to enroll your school to participate, visit heart.org/khc.
In order to build a community where everyone has the chance to live a long and healthy life, we need all hands on deck, said Casey McElhinney, VP of Youth Market at the American Heart Association.
