Even with all the difficulties that these new changes entail, we have to be thankful that we are healthy and also pray for the less fortunate that got the virus, and for their rapid recovery. We also hope the laboratories find a vaccine so we can go back to our normal life, but now with a difference. Also, that we learn to appreciate much more of what we have in our world, our nature, and to better appreciate the people that put their lives at risk to serve us every day such as doctors, nurses, attendants at grocery stores, firefighters and many more. Thank you so much! June is the month to celebrate our Fathers! Thanks for their leadership and love as they make us stronger individuals. I wanted to recognize my father who married my mom at a young age and together made many sacrifices to give me and my brother what we needed, especially love and respect. If I can say I’m a lucky person, I also have to recognize my grandfathers in heaven, who had an important role in my life, always talking to me with great advice about life. With all these examples of love, I can say that I picked the best partner and father for my children, my husband Scott. Happy Father’s Day to you all and all the daddys reading this article. Don’t miss on the cover page, the talented Calvin Hughes, news anchor from WPLG Channel 10, with his kids and a great interview on page 20 celebrating our Father’s Day issue! Don’t miss on page 22, Sumer Camp Guide number 3 sponsored by iSwim Academy. Our kids are going to be eager to have fun and enjoy this Summer. Find a full list of camps designed by every personality. You will find many options to choose from. And on page 30 a Schools Guide number I sponsored by SuperCuts. In this issue, we are celebrating our third anniversary! I wanted to thank you our reader, for always reading the magazine, for your messages, for your loyalty. Thank you to our partners. We are here thanks to you and your support allows us to be able to inform our community and be present in many homes. Thank you to all our team. We are growing every year, and we are glad that we have the same good employees since we started, all with the same passion about giving back and being different. We are not only a magazine, we are your friend. We hope to be there for you for many more years to come!

Father’s Day A Different
This Year
By Diane Landsberg

OVID-19 has forced us to isolate at home with our families. Having children home from school and parents working from home has required us to redesign our home life, especially for Fathers. I have a few questions: • Did you participate in home schooling your children? • How did you spend your days? • What new skills did you learn? • Most memorable event with your children? Your children will honor you on Father’s Day with a card and possible a small gift. I suggest for this year that you give them a gift of your history which makes you who you are. Select a special time and comfortable location. There are no rules except honesty and any additional questions from your children are welcome. A cell phone can be present, but only for the purpose of recording the conversation.
After going through some of these, not only will your children know more about you, you might learn a few valuable things about yourself. Happy Father’s Day!
• • • • • • THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE EXAMPLES TO GET THE CONVERSATION STARTED. SELECT THE ONES THAT ARE AGE AND SITUATION APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR FAMILY:
• • • • •

hy did you marry mom? W W hat is the best part of being a Father? Are there skills your Father shared with you that you are doing with your own children? What is the most important thing you can teach me? W hat memories do you want your children to have from this experience of home isolation?
• • • • • • • • •
hy did you choose my W name? What was your first job? Are you proud of me? Why? If your friends could describe you with three characteristics, what would they be? W hat is the most serious or important decision you ever had to make? W hy did you select your profession? W hat makes you the most angry? Who is your hero? W hat are you most thankful for? W hat is the worst thing someone said to you? W ere you ever teased or bullied at school? Did a teacher ever pick on you or single you out? Why? What did you do? Were you smart in school? Most embarrassing situation? What was your best subject? What were you most scared of as a kid? What sports were you good at? Do you ever cry? Best vacation? What super power would you pick?

have. Second, plan your meals for the week and see which ingredients might overlap. Third, create a shopping list based on your meal plan, and stick to it as this prevents impulse buying. Finally, shop seasonally and locally in the produce section of your grocery store. Often, seasonal produce is more abundant and lower in cost.

Summer Nutrition
As we enter the Summer of 2020, we wonder what the future will hold for our families. The world is navigating unchartered waters because of this global pandemic. What will life be like after COVID19?
W is nutrition.
hile many aspects of our daily lives have changed, there are some things that will always remain important to our families. One of them
Prior to this pandemic, finding healthy meal ideas was a parent’s biggest concern. Now, it’s finding healthy and affordable meals. Amy Kimberlain, RDN, shared her advice on the Health Channel’s Instagram newsfeed, during “Your 2 Minute Medical Moment.” Amy’s tips include taking inventory of your pantry, fridge, and freezer as this allows you to meal plan based on foods you already
Despite experiencing the toss and tumble of how this pandemic has affected us, there are still ways to keep your kids focused on nutrition. According to Lucette Talamas, a RD/LDN, who was interviewed by the Health Channel for the Health Insiders show, parents should get their kids involved meal planning. Ask them to choose the vegetable or fruit of the week. Parents can be also be nutritional role models. Encourage all your family members to participate in making healthy nutritional choices. Finally, parents should engage in positive language when discussing food and nutrition. Say, “do this” instead of, “don’t do that.” While the Summer of 2020 might be a difficult time for our families, our communities, our nation, and the world, it’s comforting to know that there will be backyard barbeques, baseball games, and beach weekends again. And when that happens, we can look back at this difficult time and say, “We got through this, together.” For more information on how to keep your family safe, healthy and well, turn to the Health Channel’s broadcast and multi-digital platforms for a wealth of resources to help you do just that.

Family-Friendly Summer Activities for the family
FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES
MIND
Do a puzzle – create a cozy puzzle corner so you can complete complex puzzles over time Watch a documentary – Netflix and Disney+ has some great ones. Write a story or play – get those creative juices lowing. Listen to a podcast – check out NPR’s Wow in the World. Build with Legos or blocks – an all-time favorite for younger kids.
BODY
Take a walk – hit the beach or a nature trail. Do yoga – Cosmic Kids Yoga combines yoga, mindfulness and storytelling. Have a dance party - take turns being the DJ! Bike riding – have your kids map out the route beforehand. Play charades – everyone can join in the fun.

Activities for the family
Summer is finally here! We are all ready for a much-needed break from homeschooling and looking forward to some fun. However, a less structured day, and minimal supervision can spell trouble for some kids and teens.
“It’s hard to keep tabs on your kids in the summer. Having family rules are essential all year, but perhaps even more so during the summer. They help keep kids, especially teens, out of trouble and give parents a little bit of peace of mind that their kids know guidelines exist and hopefully will be followed,” said Peggy Sapp, Informed Families President and CEO. Establishing family rules are important. What are your rules? If you want to learn how to set and establish rules, contact Mery Dominguez at mdominguez@ informedfamilies.org or 305-856-4886 about joining an Informed Families’ Parent Peer Group.
Spending time together as a family is great too. If you are looking for some ideas, don’t worry we have got you covered. Check out the list of activities of family-friendly summer activities in the box below. Remember communication is key If you are enjoying an activity with your kids use it as an opportunity to talk and really listen to one another. “The small, everyday things that parents do to connect with their kids make a big difference. It’s really about the time you spend together. It’s the basis for building healthy relationships,” Sapp said. The earlier you start connecting with your kids, the better. If your kids aren’t used to talking to you about what’s going on in their lives when they are 8 or 10 years old, it’s harder to get them talking when they are 12-14 years old.
Pray – pray through words, art or song Listen to music or sing – share some of your favorites with your children, and listen to some of theirs. Write in a journal – a great activity for reflection & goal setting. Meditate – everyone benefits from taking time out each day to “unplugged”, relax, and focus. Create a gratitude or vision board – hang the completed masterpiece up where it can be seen everyday.
ENVIRONMENT
Wash the family car – kids love to help out Draw murals outside with colored chalk – the driveway or sidewalk is your canvas. Garden – start an herb or vegetable planter Go through toys, clothes and books – decide what you can donate. Volunteer – help your kids develop empathy & compassion for others.
FAMILY
Play board games – so many great ones to choose from. Cook dinner together – the Food Network has tons of kid-friendly recipes. Watch a movie – perfect for a family night in Have a picnic – this can be as easy as spreading a blanket down in your backyard Tell stories about old memories – a great way to create new memories too.

By Coach Nick
DEAR DAD,
Happy Father’s Day! My gift for you today is more of a wish, like when you blow out your candles. I wish for you today, and each day hereafter, to slow down your busy schedule a bit. Maybe you can even learn to smell a flower or appreciate its beauty. What if you slowed down just enough to hear my laugh, in a way no one else on earth can hear it? You see Dad, I don’t wish these wishes for me, I wish them for you. The joy you will feel, the present you will receive from your presence is the gift Dad. You are my hero dad! I want to be just like you, and I will be, just like you.
I LOVE YOU DAD!
Imagine if we could slow down a minute and smell the coffees or flowers or their hair…? Our children need us dads. They require someone to show them how to treat a woman, how to respect all women the way YOU respect their mother. See, that’s the trick dads, the trick is our kids do what we do, not what we say OR what we want them to do. They call “fraud” on us all the time by our “do what we say, not what we do” attitude. We can do this dads. We are dads. It’s what dads do. YOU GOT THIS!
From my heart to yours, if you are a father or a pseudo father or play a father figure role in a child’s life (or children), HAPPY FATHER’S DAY and I love you mucho mucho! Keep up the work, it is so important! Peace and thanks.

Dealing with new routines for our exceptional kids while social distancing
By Mary Palacios-Pike

If your child is having difficulty transitioning to a new routine, she recommends affirming their feelings
Tom Mooney and his son James.
s we begin this “new” Summer, we leave behind weeks that felt like years, where our special needs children struggled with the changes in routine, schedules and environment, imposed isolation, covered faces, and much stressed parents at home. None of us were prepared to face these challenges while also being expected to work diligently from a totally reinvented home structure and an impacted economy.
“What has made this whole ordeal particularly challenging was the lack of an end date and not knowing what the new normal will be” said Tom Mooney, whose son James is on the Autism Spectrum. The virtual world using zoom and teletherapy helped many of our children connect to familiar faces and keep some of the normalcy. Teachers and therapists were able to bring smiles and interaction as much as they possibly could given the circumstances, while parents served as ‘shadows’ to their children. But once the newness of the first weeks of virtual learning settled in and the workload of the parents doubled, meltdowns began to increase, regression was much more noticeable, and stagnation arrived, bringing fear, frustration and tears from already emotionally stricken parents. Kelly Vedrani, parent of a special needs child stressed the inadequacy of the virtual learning for her son Miles, “he needs so much daily physical interaction in order to help him, it is very, very difficult to do that virtually. I feel like he has certainly regressed in this environment”. As we transition to summer, Dr. Laura Olivos, a local child psychologist specializing in children with autism, proposes utilizing social stories & visual schedules to convey what they can expect with the resources available. Dr. Laura says it is important to “provide a sense of predictability, safety, and validate both positive and negative aspects to these changes.” If your child is having difficulty transitioning to a new routine, she recommends affirming their feelings, provide choices, integrate their passions into their summer schedule, and be mindful of your own selfcare as a parent or caregiver. In the end, we are grateful to be reading this today, realizing the many blessings and learnings we had with our children during the past few months. Tamara Seitz, parent of two added the final touch: “I applaud every parent. This was NOT easy. We all need to mention our respect for teachers and therapists. We can see at firsthand what they deal with each day with our kids, we can all agree was not easy at all”.

Tell us about your upbringing and formal education?
I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Louis Pasteur Elementary School. I briefly attended Walton School on the city’s westside as I didn’t complete middle school in Ohio. My mother moved us to East St. Louis, Illinois where I went to middle, junior high and high school. I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia while majoring in broadcast journalism.
worst day, I gathered stories during the day and cried at night.
Does being a public person interfere with your private life with your family?
Sure it does! LOL I am naturally a private person who doesn’t enjoy the limelight. I strongly believe that newscasters aren’t the stars but rather the news is. The spotlight belongs
It must have been hard to move from Philly to Missouri and then to Miami? What did you find the most challenging during this transition?
Moving is always difficult especially when you involve a toddler. My first son was six monthsold and we had no established friends or relatives in South Florida to help make the transition from Philadelphia a smooth one. Needless to say, there were some stormy days, but it helped us appreciate the warm, sunny days.
Why did you decide to study to be a journalist?
Sometimes you don’t discover your purpose in life. It discovers you. I guess in a way journalism discovered me. My English/ Language Arts high school teacher recruited a group of students to resurrect our defunct school newspaper. I agreed to join the staff as a reporter and immediately fell in love with every aspect of journalism and telling stories. As a child, I had dreams of playing ball in the NBA and still to this day I remain obsessed with the sport. But becoming a journalist was a slam dunk from the moment I picked up a reporter’s notepad and pen.
We know that you were at the disastrous Haiti Heardquaque 10 years ago and that you have recently visited the island. Could you tell us about your experience there?
I have been traveling to Haiti to report on stories for more than a decade. The Caribbean nation has had four democratically-elected presidents and I have interviewed three of them. From hurricanes to political storms to the 2010 quake, I have been there to cover the headline in Haiti. But, make no mistake, Haiti is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited, and the culture and people are some of the most intriguing on earth. Ten years ago, the deadly quake changed lives and severely crippled a nation that was already suffocating economically. When the powerful tremor struck, just about every building and school in Haiti’s capitol city collapsed. An estimated 200,000 people lost their lives. The 7.0 magnitude quake lasted less than a minute, but the country was devastated. Like so many journalists who covered the former French colony’s
on the message and not messenger. Our society, however, is strongly attracted to people who perform on camera, and I happen to be one of those people, so I get it! Being a celebrity is a symptom of success. And, social media is a game-changer. Let’s just say I sincerely enjoy my so called “me-time.” That is, off camera.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am a very active person, so I enjoy running, exercising and playing basketball with my children. I love cooking and my children love to eat especially my boys. For me, a fun day could also consist of watching mindless television or listening to jazz music in my backyard in the pool with a nice glass of white wine.
What do you teach your kids about life?
I’ll try to give you the abbreviated version of my daily life sermons to my children. First, I strongly urge them to always be in the moment. We are given 24 hours in a day, but we are not guaranteed 24 hours in a day. Your daily habits determine your success. There is no such thing as overnight success. Always be a critical thinker. In other words, don’t accept what anyone says as the gospel truth. Go the extra mile and never be afraid to question authority. (This particular advice does sometimes come back to bite me. LOL) I also talk with them about the importance of being leaders, always serving the community, knowing who they are and their history. Lastly, by example, I show them that nothing of any meaningful value is ever given but that you must work hard to achieve your goals.

MIAMI KIDS MAGAZINE,
ACTI VE D U RI N G
CORONAVIRUS SOCIAL DISTANCING BY PROVIDING LIVE STREAMING EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES.
Miami Kids Magazine was proud to provide live streaming videos every day during social distancing thanks to the generous support of Florida Blue. We were able to visit the Miami Zoo, Frost Museum, learn Chinese with Chinese Learning Center of Miami, dance and sing with Gymbo the Clown, and also participated with coach Nick jumping, running and swimming. Other activities included music classes thanks to School of Rock and we did art projects with The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and much more! On this page, we want to share some pictures of the participants interacting in the virtual classes.
THE EASTER BUNNY SURPRISED WINNERS OF MIAMI KIDS MAGAZINE ARTS AND CRAFT CONTEST BY VISITING THEIR HOMES, FOLLOWED BY DRIVING AROUND SELECTIVE STREETS IN THE CITY OF MIAMI ON A FIRE TRUCK. Miami Kids Magazine organized an Easter Arts and Craft contest during social distancing. On Sunday, April 12, the winners had the opportunity to have the Easter Bunny visit their homes and deliver an Easter basket full of goodies. In the following pictures, you can see the winners and also some of the other great artists that submitted their pieces of art. After delivering the baskets, the Easter Bunny, wearing his mask and respecting the social distancing guidelines, waved hello to many happy families in the City of Miami. The families were waiting at the front of the houses with the camera ready to take a picture of him. A special thank you to Commissioner Ken Russell and the City of Miami Fire-Department that made the visit of the Easter Bunny possible!

Miami Kids Magazine has partnered with HEARTs Passion Project and Commissioner Ken Russell to connect our beloved senior citizens - all through art! This great initiative of HEART’s Passion Project consists of the idea that children are able to bring a smile to the face of the elderly in our community by simply creating a piece of art and dedicated it to them. You can visit Heart Passion Project and select the name of a senior, then submit the artwork on the same web page or you can sent it to Miami Kids Magazine social media pages or email. We will make sure to send your kid’s creations to them. On this page you can find some of the children that have already submitted their artwork and the pictures of the happy seniors when they received it.
Anonymous submission from St Ann in west palm beach
