The holidays are fast approaching. Many households have annual traditions that they share with family and friends, and mine is no exception. I learned from my Grandmother how to make holidays special and the importance of bringing everyone together for delicious food and creating new memories.

table, sit close to watch the game to cheer on our favorite team, and continue with all past traditions. Unfortunately, it has to be different this year. However, it can still be special while we are being safe and responsible, all while we all are experiencing pandemic fatigue. Hopefully you will find this list helpful:

This year in 2020, the holidays will be vastly different due to COVID-19 because the virus doesn’t really care if it is a special time. While it shouldn’t be necessary to avoid all family gatherings, some drastic changes have to be put into place in order to remain safe. We are all suffering from isolation that has led to loneliness and disconnection, and we wish to “get back to normal”. We want to hug all those we love, bring in visiting cousins, squeeze in as many as possible around the dinner

• • • • • • •

Keep your guest lists small. Drive instead of traveling by plane. Encourage those traveling to isolate two weeks prior if at all possible. Sanitize before, during and after. If possible, sit outside, which is easier here in Florida weather. If inside, open windows to increase circulation. Skip hugging or kissing and shaking hands.

Wear masks except when eating. Wash hands frequently and use paper towels to dry. Use hand sanitizer often. Consider using disposable plates, napkins and flatware. Seat households together and separate spaces between families. Appoint a few persons to place food on plates to avoid self-service. Assign a few persons to clean up all food and plates.

Most have become familiar with utilizing Zoom video conference. If you do not have the use of a commercial account, you can host a 45 minute gathering for free. Consider connecting with others to first greet one another that are in different households, even saying Grace if that is a usual tradition. You can reconvene during dessert and again to say goodbye. The holidays do not need to be completely cancelled or avoided, as we still need and love one another. We just need to do it differently this year, safely! We can do this!

“It’s easy to get off track from making healthy choices during the holidays, and the pandemic may add to the stress,” said Bridget Wojciak, director of nutrition and dietetics at Kroger Health, a national sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good program. “Eating healthfully during the holidays doesn’t mean depriving yourself; it’s about eating smart and looking for small, healthy changes and swaps you can make so you continue to feel your best,” said Jennifer Campbell, Executive Director for the American Heart Association. “For example, choosing vegetables instead of crackers or chips at lunch may not seem like much, but those little changes add up over time.” “Find the delicious, nutrientpacked foods you love,” Wojciak said. “Not everyone likes broccoli, and that is OK. There are so many varieties of fruits and vegetables to try, and so many healthful ways to prepare them. See what works best for you, and who knows? You may have a new holiday recipe to add to your table.” Here are four healthy tips for this holiday season:

4 TIPS FOR A By the American Heart Association

Eating smart is good for your heart — especially in the hectic holiday season. During Eat Smart Month in November, the American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, provided 30 days of holiday hacks to inspire simple but important healthy habits. You are welcome to visit their web page https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/ healthy-eating/eat-smart/eat-smart-month to get inspire.

1

SPICE IT UP: A great way to reduce sodium is to add more herbs and spices such as rosemary and thyme to flavor meals.

2

CHOOSE NUTRITIOUS SNACKS: To avoid overindulging at holiday meals, prep with satisfying, good mood foods that don’t sacrifice taste. Check out this no-added-sugars recipe for caramel Kettle Popcorn created by the American Heart Association and Healthy for Good supporter SweetLeaf. It’s perfect for a tasty snack that will keep you feeling full and less tempted by those unhealthy choices.

3

SHOP SMART: Grocery shopping during the holidays can be overwhelming. So if you’re looking for heart-healthy options, keep an eye out for the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check mark on select products.

4

MIND YOUR MIND: This holiday season will probably look different, with more time spent at home. Find moments throughout the season to practice gratitude, meditate and relish the time. Managing stress is good for your head and heart.

TURNING THE CALENDAR TO A BETTER 2021 By Coach Nick So… are we really ready to say goodbye to 2020?!?!? The year that was supposed to present humanity the clarity of perfect vision. Hahahahahaha, wow, quite the opposite, right? Or was it? 2020 has led my family and me to find new ways to connect. To find new ways to have fun and spend time together without leaving too far, or getting on a plane, or forget it if you want to travel to a new country or continent. 2020 seems like it was the year of stress, not the year of clarity. Now, as if we haven’t had enough, it’s time for the holidays. The holidays mean family, friends, parties, closeness, food, dessert, and more food. What? More food?!?!? “The struggle is real bro.” This saying should be up for consideration for Miami’s new motto. My oldest child and my only daughter is about to turn 13 and is looking for some guidance on particular things, specifically from her dad. We decided we would read a bunch of books together and discuss them chapter by chapter. Now, I am not a reader,

nor do I often read fiction, so we are reading personal development type books. The first book we started with is called “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson. The premise is, if you do a little bit each day you can achieve greatness fairly easily over time. There is no trick, just consistent quality effort in the best direction forward.

(with or without a mask) or to losing a loved one to what you thought was a cold.

Oh, and let’s mix in an election during a turbulent (to say the least) time in our great nation. The stress is real bro, the struggle is real bro. Sit back for a minute and take a deep breath. Learn to breathe more and talk less. It takes practice, and it is so worth it. As you head into this next year and into your next challenge in front of you, wouldn’t you rather do it with clarity? With the clarity you gained in 2020, by simply slowing down and taking a deep breath before moving forward…?

Add the slight edge philosophy to your practice to close out this test of a year. That is how I choose to view 2020. The year of clarity, no doubt in my mind. This year has taught me to not even count my chickens when I have them. At any time, things can change, things can be taken away from you. Whether it is something as simple as the freedom to walk down the street with 5 of your closest friends

IDEAS TO STORE TOYS With children in the house, we are always running out of room. We don’t have room to tuck things away. Purchasing a few storage containers to toss loose toys in can be a great option.

creates a lot of space under the bed for toys and games not currently in use. Organize toys by size and themes so you can stack them and maximize shelves and closet space. Hang mesh bags inside a closet for stuffed animals or balls. In bedrooms, stuffed animals can be in hammocks or wall shelves to keep them off of the floor.

without a lid. The lockable lid is secured with two latchable handles to protect the contents of the box from dust and water splashes. Make sure you’re making the most of any storage space you have outside of the main living areas. A bed skirt in each bedroom

If your children are younger, these bins are super kid friendly, you don’t have to worry about sharp corners, loose pieces, and rough textiles to avoid any unfortunate accidents. If you are going to pick a piece of furniture instead, pay close attention to doors and latches as well, just in case.

Purchasing multiple plastic tubs for toys is a must for most families. You can buy them in different sizes and label each bin with a word or picture to help your children know what each bin has inside. Bins with lids in a uniform size can be stacked on shelves or closets out of sight. These can typically be purchased at stores like Staples for around $10 to $16, depending on the size. These boxes are constructed for durability and have reinforced sides to increase compression strength, so boxes maintain their shape. A totally flat bottom increases rigidity for stability and allows for perfect stacking with or

Santa Claus We asked our readers to tell us what good deeds they did during the year and what they would do as a child to help make this world a better place to live. Also, we asked them what they would ask Santa this holiday season and these are their answers:

“This year I have sent clothes to the kids that don’t have in Colombia, I helped my mom taking care my little siblings with her and I have straight As in school!!! I would love to keep giving to kids that don’t have anything!” I want to ask Santa if I can work with him to give to all the kids around the world!

l Ethan Danie

Vizcaino “ My mom and I gave food to the homeless. I donated clothed and toys. I would recycle, treat people nicely, and give money to charities”. I want to ask Santa LOL dolls, a toy house for the backyard, and beanie boos

Lucianna “Lulu” Mia Gato

y Godo Isabella

“I have been a good girl, I am a nice with others, I like to help people, I am a good daughter. I study a lot, I always got A because if your study hard when you grow up you can contribute with the world, I filmed some commercials so I work too , I donate toys and clothes to the kids doesn’t has anything, and I recycle to help the planet” I want a Nintendo switch and Other American girl!.

“During the pandemic we were in-house schooling and we also helping on the family business, we were part of every team meeting, giving solutions and creating plans on how the business could survive. We desire to help others and to help make the world a better place” Kayla-7 would ask for dolls, dresses, and makeup. Elizabeth-13 would ask for something horse or Parkour related. Ultimately, they would like for our lives to be able to go back to “normal”.

Kayla Torres & Elizabeth Klock Perez “Although we were in the middle of a pandemic, one good thing that I did this year was teach myself how to sew. I also went to gymnastics after the restrictions were lifted and learned new skills. I know that staying active is also part of being healthy One way that I would create a better world is to help the homeless find a home and help prevent wildfire because they destroy animal habitats. I would also find a way to stop people from littering because when they litter, the animals get to it and can get seriously hurt.” I would like to ask Santa for the pandemic to end so that we can go back to normal, like the year 2019 was a good year.

Analia Chery “I donated some of my toys to other kids, I social distanced, I’ve been being good in school, I gave some of my old clothes to my friend, I helped mommy around the house. I would help people and I would stop bullies and racist people. I would speak up for others. I would pick up garbage from the floor and stop people who litter. I would make everyone happy.” I would like to ask Santa for gifts for other people so we can surprise them. I want my favorite ice cream truck toy, LOL surprise toys, Hatchimals, and Spider-Man toys.

Marley Olaya

“This year I started Nursery school and I met some off the lovely little friends, enjoyed the most amazing family time through the whole virus situation. I would love to have a creation on helping make the world a better place and I wish it was about each life and not politics, I’m told each day to be kind love and happiness and be a friend, reach out or even just give a smile (one smile can change someone’s mood if there having a bad day!” If Santa could bring me my wish it would be to make the page of your Miami magazine just what an amazing opportunity. A dream come true.

d Blaze Ed

w ie Sha

“This year was i spent the majority of my time in the house but honestly what I did good was help my cousins that’s in foster home come over to visit and play board games with them to make them feel happy. I feel like to create a better world we all should do something nice for one another, it doesn’t cost anything to spend time and be kind to each other. Little acts of kindness makes a huge difference.” I want to ask Santa for Xmas to give me and my 2 cousins (Alex and Corrion) who don’t have a father or a mother, a trip to Hawaii and hotel for 2021. They never been anywhere and I’d love to spend this time with them there.

Cayden Bell

o Jorge Oswaldji-Sandoval Dokma

In these difficult times of quarantine, I have taken the opportunity to spend even more time and play with my family, learn many new things at home, draw, watch movies. I want to make the world a better place, sending a powerful message to promote respect each other with courtesy, empathy. That all the children of the world, may have the possibility of studying, being healthy, and be happy. My family and I at Christmas Time and the rest of the year we always donate clothes, food and toys to those most in need. I’m going to ask Santa to brings me this year a big lightning McQueen and a “sonic” toy with lights.
