The Holiday season is here! We enjoy festive songs, beautiful decorations, and the vision of the children meeting with the big fat guy who wears a red outfit and has a white beard.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Enrique Chavez Pincilotti
CONTRIBUTING WRITERS We also come together with family members at the dinner table to enjoy a delicious meal! What a magical time of the year! In this issue, we wanted to provide you with great articles to make your holiday season unforgettable.
On the front cover, we have celebrity meteorologist Vivian Gonzalez from Channel 7 News and her beautiful family. Vivian is a talented woman who is raising a bilingual daughter with her husband Jorge. Don’t miss the full article on pages 20 and 21. MKM wants to contribute in an active and festive way to the magic of the holiday season so we created our own Christmas song. The objective of our song and also the video clip is to teach our children that during the year, and especially during this time of the year when we receive presents, that we should take time to plan how we can help less fortunate families by making their day special. Giving back is so important and teaching this to our kids at a young age will start a good tradition that will last generations. I want to invite you to watch the video and to download the song from our web page. We hope that you can listen to the song with your family. We are going to start a new year soon, so we wanted to provide you with a Kids Party Fun Guide to use as a good resource for different ideas as to where to celebrate your kids’ birthday party! Save the guide and have it handy for when it’s time to celebrate your kid’s big day. Let’s end this year visiting many attractions in Florida where you can enjoy their Christmas spirit. Check out page 30 of our Holiday Activity Guide and get ready to welcome 2020 together as a family with the objective to set a great example for our kids and our community.

he holiday season is fast approaching with Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve. We get very busy with making plans, which usually means we are too busy, spend too much money, get too little sleep and experience too much stress. Being organized can relieve some of your stress, and my go-to organizing method is using post-it notes. I found out that task lists were frustrating and difficult to manage. I write tasks and duties and post them on the cabinet above the phone (yes, I still have a land line). It makes me happy to remove a note when something is completed, and it relieves stress as I don’t have to remember a myriad of other things I have to do.
By Diane Landsberg
Getting better organized is a frequent New Year’s Resolution. If this was one of yours, how successful were you accomplishing that this year? My Grandmother used to tell me not to make a list of New Year’s resolutions, as most of the time they are unattainable, which leaves you with a feeling of failure. Instead, she advised me to make a list of things to “leave behind”. For example, instead of, “I promise I am going to exercise every day”, which usually fails the first week, state that “I will leave behind my not making exercise a priority, which is good for me”. I believe that it all breaks down to just how we use our time to the best of our ability. This doesn’t mean to cram in as much as possible in each day, but to choose to use time in an efficient way and focus on spending quality time with family and friends. In a matter of weeks, we will say goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020. I truly can’t believe that another year has passed by so quickly, even though I have a long list of things accomplished, some big, but mostly small, and I am proud of myself. Once again I will be spending my New Year’s Eve with those that I love the most in the world…..my little grandchildren so their parents can enjoy a big night out. There will be a candlelight dinner, best china, with apple juice in silver champagne glasses (mine with the real stuff) and party hats. We will dance under the moon with sparklers and bring in the New Year before their bedtime at 9:00. I am pleased with my accomplishments of 2019. I hope you will be satisfied also. You still have some time!

Children learn by playing.
This Christmas give your child a toy with a purpose.
By Yugle Rivas
T
here are many attractive options in the market when buying a toy for your children. In general, there are certain characteristics that we always look for: quality, durability, appearance, and affordable price. But the most important characteristic that we forget is if the toy can provide education and if it offers stimulation for their development. Today there is a wide variety of toys for all ages, from babies to teenagers and adults. When we are trying to select the right toy, we must take into consideration the age of our little one prior to purchasing it, and ask ourselves when we give them that toy, what do we want to achieve? Or what can we achieve with the toy? It is important that parents know about the multiple benefits of toys and games in the development of children’s social and emotional skills. Balancing between video games and traditional games plays a very important role in contributing to the learning process that every child requires. If you forget to insist on the importance of creating and
maintaining game habits and the use of toys in your routine, and you stick only to new technologies by allowing and reinforcing only the use of technological resources, you are conditioning their childhood. It is proven that many children who lack social skills and emotional interaction is due to the lack of play and interaction with other children. These skills are learned and practiced in the day-to-day experience of playing with other children. If our children are not playing or interacting, how are they going to learn these skills? Focus this 2020 on dedicating time to your children and promoting play at home as a matter of quality rather than quantity. The best memories of your children will be moments and not things. Raise them to play and also motivate them to use toys which are both important resources for every child’s early growth.

HOLIDAY
HEALTHY The American Heart Association recommends these easy tips and recipes that will help you stay healthy and mindful as you celebrate the holidays with friends and family. You can eat well and be well this holiday season, with these tasty treats, party tricks and simple strategies.
BY THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
EATING guide
Enjoy in moderation.
Is it even possible to eat healthy during the holidays? Yes! And you can do it without FOMO or a lot of effort. Grandma’s fudge is a family tradition, and your coworker’s cookies are calling you from the breakroom. Indulging a little won’t hurt — so lighten up! No, we mean that literally. Enjoy holiday treats in smaller portions, make healthy substitutions where you can, and plan ahead for merry meals that are healthy, too.
Include lots of seasonal, colorful fruits and vegetables.
Do you decorate for the holidays with a lot of color? Treat your plate the same way. Fruits and vegetables will add flavor, color and nutrients to holiday favorites. And they help you feel fuller longer so you can avoid the temptation to overeat.
Slash unwanted calories with easy swaps and substitutions.
Learn where excess calories, sodium, saturated fat and added sugars are hiding in traditional holiday foods and beverages, and some easy swaps to avoid them. Our guide will show you how.
Navigate holiday parties like a boss.
From the obligatory workplace parties to family get-togethers, your calendar may be bursting with opportunities to eat and drink outside of your regular routine. Make a plan that will help you resist plowing through the buffet table, like having a healthy snack beforehand.
Sprinkle in opportunities to be active.
Keep the inevitable indulgences in check by staying active. Enjoy some winter sports for a change of pace, or schedule in a quick walk or workout before you head to the next party.

MIAMI
E S U O H T H G LI BLIND CELEBRATES FOR THE
YEARS
I
n the late 1920s blind activist Dolly Gamble enlisted the help of the Lions Club of Miami and Miami Rotary Club to help the blind attain independence. From their efforts the Florida Association of Workers for the Blind, which would later be called Miami Lighthouse, was born. Today Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit serving the needs of the blind and visually impaired. Through education, training, research and vision enhancement, Miami Lighthouse provides hope, confidence, and independence to people of all ages, transforming the lives of nearly 90,000 blind and visually impaired people annually, from babies to seniors, and their families. In 2020, Miami Lighthouse will celebrate 90 years of service excellence to the blind and visually impaired community. In 2005, Virginia A. Jacko was named the first President and CEO who happens to be blind in the 90 year history of the Miami Lighthouse. A key to CEO Jacko’s leadership is her ability to collaborate and build bridges within the Florida
community. She routinely engages with academia, healthcare, social services, and for-profit entities in Miami-Dade County and beyond to establish relationships that enable the Miami Lighthouse to have a significant impact both nationally and internationally and for its patrons to have a significant outcome of independence through employment, advocacy, and validation of best practices. The Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program, cited by the American Optometric Association as a national model other states should adopt, provides comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses for underserved school-children throughout Florida using their fleet of five mobile eye care units. The Miami Lighthouse Learning Center’s innovative programs, such as their internationally recognized inclusion pre-kindergarten – from which they are developing a certificate program with a sister institution in Israel, new kindergarten and mothers’ play days for their blind toddlers, make a difference in the lives of children and their families. Through GED and ESOL classes for adults, offered in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Schools Adult Education; their nationally recognized music inclusion program, which trains students, enrolled nationally and internationally, for employment in the music industry; and a job-readiness training program that prepares participants for mainstream, competitive, integrated employment, Miami Lighthouse strives to ensure that their clients can take their place in the workforce and lead productive, fulfilling lives. Miami Lighthouse also contracts with the School Board of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (the 3rd largest school district in the U.S.) for their birth to 2, pre-kindergarten, new kindergarten, functional vision and learning media assessments, Braille transcribing, Braille music distance learning, Adult Basic Education/ GED, English as a Second Language for visually impaired adults, and the Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program. Under CEO Jacko, Miami Lighthouse has risen to be counted among the elite top 35 charities in the country according the Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier independent nonprofit evaluator. Her leadership moved the organization from a two-star rating to a four-star rating, the highest rating possible, reflecting sound fiscal management, responsible use of donor dollars and financial strength.
Miami Lighthouse will be celebrating its 90th anniversary on January 25, 2020 at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. For more information regarding tickets, tables or sponsorships, please contact Cameron Sisser at csisser@ miamilighthouse.org or 786-362-7515.

Natural ways to prepare for this season’s coughs and colds There’s never a convenient time for your child to get sick. While missed school (and work!) days are going to happen, there are steps you can take to minimize them. OTHER STRATEGIES INCLUDE: •
By Bill Sears, MD, America’s Pediatrician The best prevention strategy is simple regular exercise, sufficient sleep and good nutrition. Help your family maintain a healthy diet, packed with vitamins and nutrients including immune-boosting foods such as fish, citrus fruits and leafy vegetables, to help prevent the onset of illness. And stock up on items such as tissues, vitamin C, throat lozenges, hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray. Keep them in one handy place to make illness prevention even easier.
•
WASH HANDS OFTEN AND PROPERLY: According to the CDC, hand washing is the most effective way to stay healthy. Teach your children to wash their hands frequently to help kill the viruses and bacteria they may have collected. Have them use regular soap and warm water to scrub their hands including the back of their hands, in between fingers and under nails for 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based gel if soap and water are not available. Remind your child to sneeze and cough into the crux of their elbow and to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose and mouth. DISINFECT TO PROTECT: Kids can touch and retouch more than 300 surfaces in just 30 minutes. You can help protect family members from picking up and spreading germs
with their hands by spraying commonly touched surfaces and objects with a disinfectant after cleaning. Regular disinfection will help kill cold- and flucausing viruses and bacteria before anyone in your family gets sick. •
START THE WHOLE FAMILY ON DAILY SUPERFRUIT PROTECTION. Black elderberries are one of nature’s richest sources of pigments called anthocyanins which have a remarkable ability to stimulate the body’s immune system.
Always contact your doctor if you have a gut feeling that your child is unusually ill, or if her symptoms worsen, or don’t improve after more than four days. Persistent high fever, dehydration, severe cough with chest pain and shortness of breath, or a severe headache with a stiff, painful back-of-theneck and persistent vomiting may be signs that something more serious is going on.

Miami Kids Magazine December-January 2019
1. Vivian, tell us about your upbringing and formal education I am born and raised in Miami, Florida (“the 305”) /South Florida. My family is Cuban and they left their native country to live the American dream. They were completely dedicated to working hard and devoted to their family. They always made it a point to make sure we were together, like spending summers at the beach, going to Disney World and to Florida Marlins baseball games. I attended Roblanca Academy in Hialeah, Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami Gardens and graduated from Florida International University and Mississippi State University with a degree in Geography in environmental sciences and Geosciences. 2. Did you know you wanted to be a meteorologist at a young age? Most people don’t even know what career path they want to take until later in life and probably change majors in college a few times. At the age of 7 and ever since I can remember, weather was my calling. I was always fascinated by cloud patterns, the wind, and waves at the beach. In fact, some of my best memories were spending Summers at the beach with family and friends. I had a sand pale in one hand and a plastic sand shovel in the other as my microphone as I reported the weather. There is even some home video footage of me signing off with Channel 7 News! 3. How do you feel living in a city like Miami and being a meteorologist where the weather changes so often? I feel blessed to serve my community and it is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. Most anchors, reporters and meteorologist usually get their start in a small market and I have
been given the opportunity to work in a major market, my hometown! This is proof that dreams do come true. South Florida weather can change rapidly and my understanding of our patterns is an advantage, especially when severe weather hits. 4. Every year must be a challenge during hurricane season. How do you prepare for your TV role? Before hurricane season starts, we have meetings with forecasters from The National Weather Service of Miami and get briefed by experts from The National Hurricane Center on pattern trends, changes and how they think it will impact the season. We also come together with the station managers and radio partners to discuss plans in case a storm threatens South Florida. There is always more pressure during hurricane season and the most challenging part is to present the forecast in an easy to understand fashion. We use different tools to keep the public safe and informed and I like to use social media. My goal is to make sure I’m accessible to everyone. I’m here for YOU!
On Christmas Day, we make a huge breakfast that includes leftovers and meet at my home to open up the gifts. It’s really an all day affair! 8. What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and working out. We enjoy taking Emma to a park, doing art projects, playing with Brownie our miniature schnauzer, and sitting together to have a meal. Our favorite meal is breakfast. If you ask Emma what is her favorite food? She will say pancakes and syrup and mac n’ cheese. Another thing I like to do is get a workout in before my work day gets started. It improves my overall mood and energy. Leading a healthy lifestyle, has helped me in so many aspects. 9. What are your goals for the next year? My goals for next year include staying healthy, growing professionally while serving my community, and expanding our family.
5. How did you meet your husband? I met my husband through family. We knew each other years before we even started dating. One day back in 2008, we were both single and hit it off. It was easy from the beginning. We even skipped the whole step of having to meet the family because we all knew each other. That took a lot of pressure off and the rest is history. 6. What are the challenges of raising your daughter while having to be at work so early in the morning? My husband has always supported my big weather dreams and I must say raising our daughter with such demanding work schedules and hours is a team effort. Some mornings, the struggle is real. However, I must say for a working mother, this is the best schedule. Once the noon show is over, I get to spend most of the afternoon and early evening with my daughter. I treasure that time with her. 7. What are your family Christmas traditions? Our family traditions include gathering together in one of our homes for Noche Buena. Everyone has their specialty dish that they bring and one of those is the lechon (roasted suckling pork).
