Welcome to the New Year! A new year of new adventures and experiences awaits. We hope that you can join us reading every issue in 2020 and also attend our events. On the cover page, we have NBC6 TV host, author and writer Jen Herrera with her family sharing this “Love” issue. The article is very inspirational.

PUBLISHER - EDITOR Karla C. Richey

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Enrique Chavez Pincilotti

CONTRIBUTING WRITERS We all love our kids. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with work and our daily routine, and we forget about special things that money can’t buy. The article by Diane Landsberg on page 9 will make you think and evaluate your schedule.

February is “Heart Month” and on page 11 we have a special article form the American Heart Association with some tips to consider in our everyday life. March is “Nutrition Month” and we have a great article on how to control ourselves when we are going to eat. We are not always hungry when we think we are. Don’t miss it on page 13. March is also the Red Cross Month. Don’t miss on page 19 important information on who is the Red Cross, what they do, and how you can help them. We are super excited to announce that Coach Nick, president of Iswim Academy is going to join us this year writing great articles about healthrelated topics, tips about sports, and much more for the family. He is well known in our community and he has taught many of our kids how to swim in a short period of time! Believe me! My kids are great swimmers thanks to him! ISwim Academy is also the sponsor of the Summer Camp Guides. See the articles in this issue on page 22 and 23 Summer Camp Guide number 1! It is not too early to start planning where our kids are going to go in the summertime. Remember that planning in advance will get us to release some pressure during the Summer. Again, thank you for reading. Thank you to our long-time partners and to the new ones that believe in our hard work!

others. You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning.

the

This good fortune is actually happening to you already and you weren’t even aware of it. Actually it is TIME, not MONEY.

of By Diane Landsberg

This article was shared with me many years ago (author unknown) and I am passing on this wise advice as we are starting the New Year. Imagine each morning that your bank magically receives a deposit of $86,400 into your account, but you must strictly follow these four rules:

time

1. Everything that you don’t spend during each day will be taken away from you. 2. You are not permitted to transfer the money into some other account. 3. You can only spend it. 4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank will open your account with another $86,400 for that day. 5. So, what would you actually decide to do? You would buy anything and everything you ever wanted. Not only for yourself but especially for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don’t know, because you couldn’t possibly spend it all on yourself and it brings you happiness to take care of

Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life. What we haven’t used up that day is forever lost. Yesterday is forever gone. However, each morning the account is refilled. So, what will you do with your 86,400 seconds today? Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars. Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think. So take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply, share your seconds generously and enjoy life! I know I will take time to be with my grandchildren and spend as much time with them as possible. I am so rich with time to share with them and still have enough wealth to time with my wonderful friends. Here’s wishing you a wonderful and beautiful day, and start “spending” your 86,400 seconds living a good life!

Join American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women® and act against heart disease this American Heart Month

There are a variety of ways to support women’s heart health and the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, nationally sponsored by CVS Health throughout February:

By The American Heart Association

W

hile nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes, anyone can be affected by cardiovascular diseases – at any age. In fact, heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of women, taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined. This February – American Heart Month – the American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives and its Go Red for Women movement, nationally sponsored by CVS Health, is calling on women, and those they love, to support its efforts to improve the overall health of all women. This can be achieved by wearing red and giving to the Association’s lifesaving mission beginning Friday, February 7, National Wear Red Day, and throughout February. “The Go Red for Women movement empowers women to stand up against their greatest health threat, heart disease, which claims the lives of one in three women – a third of our mothers, sisters and friends,” said American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown. “This year, we celebrate 16 years of Go Red and encourage our volunteers, supporters and staff nationwide to ‘wear

JOIN THE MISSION TO FIGHT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. red and give’ to raise awareness, inspire action and make our lifesaving work possible.” Some risk factors for cardiovascular diseases like age, race, gender and family history can’t be controlled, but others like high blood pressure, lack of regular physical activity and diabetes can be treated or managed. To prevent and beat heart disease and stroke, women should know their family health history and their five key personal health numbers: total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. This allows women to determine personal risks and helps motivate them to take small steps toward lifestyle changes. Women are encouraged to make a Go Red Healthy Behavior Commitment to move more, eat smart and manage blood pressure.

WEAR RED AND GIVE • Wear red on Friday, Feb. 7 to raise awareness about heart disease – the leading cause of death in women. Purchase the iconic Red Dress Pin at ShopHeart.org. • Make a donation anytime during February to support the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association at WearRedDay.org. • Join the social media conversation by using #WearRedAndGive. 2020 SOUTH FLORIDA GO RED FOR WOMEN BRUNCH Go Red for Women provides a platform for women and their families to lead healthier lives and drive collective action for community transformation. It’s not just about wearing red; it’s not just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about: • Providing women with opportunities to prioritize and take charge of their own health; • Building communities that support and provide access to healthy choices; • D e m a n d i n g e q u a l a c c e s s t o healthcare for all women and their families; • Increasing women in STEM in upcoming generations. The Go Red for Women Brunch will take place at the end of Heart Month on February 21 at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort and Spa.

Mindful Eating: Savor the Flavor

How do you meditate while eating? Slow down. Being mindful and paying attention to the food you consume could help you eat healthier, with more appreciation and intention. Learn how to make every meal a practice of awareness.

Focus on the Food Mindfulness has become as buzzworthy as cold pressed coffee. One simple way to eat healthier may be to simply be mindful when eating. And guess what, mindful eating doesn’t mean dieting or restrictions. It’s about taking a moment to take it in. There are a lot of methods out there, but we’ve simplified it for you. PONDER: Before you eat, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” Sometimes we think we’re hungry when we’re actually thirsty or bored or stressed. Check in, do you need nourishment in the form of food or do you need something else? APPRAISE: When your food is in front of you, take a moment. How does it look? How does it smell? Do you really want it? Is it more than you need? SLOW: Slow down, like waaay down. Put your fork down between bites. Really chew your food and taste it. Slowing down helps your brain catch up with your stomach. SAVOR: Really enjoy your food. How does the texture feel in your mouth? What are all the complex flavors you can taste? Take a moment to savor the satisfaction of each bite. STOP: Stop when you’re full. Sounds so obvious, right? But hey, cleaning your plate isn’t necessary. By noticing when you’re full and stopping, you may avoid unnecessary calories and indigestion.

Loving our kids, By coach Nick

I do not know much; however, I like to study the human element. Since becoming a parent 12 years ago, I have changed my view and perspective on the world, significantly” said coach Nick, president of iSwim Academy.

T

where they are

his article is about “Loving your kids, where they are.” How can you be more present with your kids without judging? How can you be there for them in the right moment? How can you consistently love them where they are when they consistently need redirection and guidance? How can I help them have a better life than I did?

Have you ever asked yourself any or all of those questions? I have many times. The greatest gift you can give your child is your uninterrupted attention, time to listen to them without judging. There’s that word again, “presence.” I am still not sure about that word. Try to think of it like this, ask yourself, “Am I still breathing?” And then figure out the answer. I realize this may sound silly; however, in order to truly know if you are still breathing, you must be present with your breath and pay attention to nothing else. You are not judging your breath or how you are breathing. It’s not too shallow or too deep,

it’s just breath. Practice counting to 10, with each inhale and exhale counted. Practice taking 5 complete breaths with supreme focus and attention just on the inhale and exhales. Practice being in the moment of your breath. Try this exercise as you watch your children play and be children. Count your breaths without judgment of your breathing or judgment of what your children are doing. Soon you can move to do this exercise as you play with them, in whatever game they want to play, however they want to play it, without your added judgment. What a gift you can give!! Your uninterrupted, even by the voices in your head, attention and time to the thing you love most. My wish for you is that this helps bring you closer to your child. Loving them where they are is what they desire most. Giving them your fully present self is the greatest gift you can give to anyone, especially your child.

March Is

Red Cross Month! MARCH IS AMERICAN RED CROSS MONTH, a special time to recognize and thank Red Cross volunteers and donors who give their time, and to inspire others to become heroes in their communities. All over the country and around the world, the Red Cross is powered by volunteers who respond to disasters ranging from home fires to natural disasters, delivering help and hope to those affected. 90 PERCENT OF THE RED CROSS WORK FORCE IS COMPRISED OF VOLUNTEERS. The need to help people is constant—and this past year of disaster activity was no exception. In 2019, Red Cross volunteers stood by the sides of families affected by large events

like wildfires in California, Hurricane Dorian on the East Coast, tropical storm flooding in Texas, and tornadoes and floods in the Midwest. Locally, the South Florida Red Cross deployed nearly 200 VOLUNTEERS to respond to major disasters such as Hurricanes Barry and Dorian, the floods in the Midwest and the shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas. Their work didn’t stop there! Red Cross volunteers across the South Florida Region also responded to more than 550 HOME FIRES and provided comfort and support to over 2,400 INDIVIDUALS. Undertaking disaster relief efforts would not be possible without the support of trained Red Cross volunteers, generous and selfless individuals who leave their own homes and families to help. Volunteers are vital to the mission delivery.

THIS MARCH, BECOME A HERO IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY BY JOINING THE RED CROSS TO GIVE BACK TO THOSE IN NEED. Become a Red Cross volunteer and find out how you can help! Visit redcross. org/SFLVolunteer. You can also join us in supporting families impacted by a disaster and #help1family on GIVING DAY – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, a 24-hour fundraising campaign supporting the work of the Red Cross. DONATE NOW by visiting redcross.org/givingday, or by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10.

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of EMERGENCIES by mobilizing the power of VOLUNTEERS and the generosity of DONORS. February-March 2020

TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING AND FORMAL EDUCATION? I was born and raised in Hialeah, Florida. For most of elementary school I went to a magnet school for languages in Miami Dade. Though my father is Cuban, that is where I learned to fluently speak, read and write in Spanish. As a teen I grew up in Davie and graduated from Western High School, Go Wildcats! Before I went away to college, I had my very first internship in News at WPLG in Miami. It is where I instantly fell in love with journalism and TV. After that first summer in a newsroom, I started college at Florida State University, that’s where I spent some of the best 4 years of my life! HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR HUSBAND? I met my husband at the Round Up! It’s a country western bar in Davie. I was home interning at WPLG once again before my senior year of college. My husband was in paramedic school at the time. It was funny because my father who is a retired firefighter, told all three of his daughters that we were not allowed to date firefighters… 2 out of the 3 of us married one! WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE A JOURNALIST. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE WORKING SEVERAL YEARS AS A NEWS ANCHOR AND THEN TO HOST A “MAGAZINE SHOW 6 IN THE MIX”? I’ll tell you this, I never thought I’d be hosting an entertainment show! My true passion is News, always has been. There’s a responsibility that comes with telling the tougher stories. With that said, I think I underestimated the challenges of hosting a show like Six in the mix before I actually did it! It’s a nice change for me. I’m also truly enjoying telling the good stories happening in our community. WE KNOW THAT YOU HAD A RARE AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE AND YOU DECIDED TO TAKE OUT YOUR BREAST IMPLANTS. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO ALL OF THE WOMEN READING THIS ARTICLE? TELL US ABOUT YOUR BOOK. Yes- it’s wild for me to think about where I was physically and mentally just a few years ago compared to now. I had been in constant pain, I had skin rashes on several parts of my body, among other symptoms and could not figure out what was wrong with me. Doctors couldn’t either. It was scary, especially being only in my early thirties with two young girls at home. First I changed my lifestyle, stress levels and what I ate. Ultimately though it was removing my saline breast implants that allowed me to heal completely. It’s why I decided to write “Are your Fake Boobs Making You Sick?” I have been able to

help so many other women by telling my story. It’s been awesome.

5

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR SPARE TIME? What spare time? Lol. There isn’t much of it these days. Our girls are 10 and 12 and involved in travel softball and dance so our weeknights and weekends are non-stop. When we do have a little time off, we love going down to the Keys, and I know it’s not exciting, but we love just being home!

6

WHAT DOES THE WORD LOVE MEAN TO YOU? Trying not to sound cliché here… I think Self Love is most important. I’m a better wife, mom and professional because I love the person I am becoming. You can’t give 100% of yourself to anybody or anything without that. I want to me an amazing mom and wife as often as I can! I also really love my peloton, red wine ad high waisted jeans!

7

ANY FINAL WORDS OF INSPIRATION TO OUR READERS? I just think we all need to do the best we can in whatever anybody is doing! Give 100% to everything whenever you can. It’s also really important to surround yourself with family and friends who help you grow and truly support you and want to see you succeed.

There are two major events in Miami that help accomplish these goals: For the Love of Learning Gala. This charitable event raises funds for the public school’s educational initiatives recognize student achievement, as well as honors this year’s Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), Alumni Hall of Fame inductees.

Proper education is the most important gift you can give to a child. In our city, we have many vulnerable students in need of an opportunity so that they can succeed in the classroom, and beyond.

Nearly 55,000 students benefited directly from FNEI supported initiatives last year alone. FNEI Supported programs include: SUMMER YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: More than 3,500 at-risk youth, ages 15-18, are placed in paid Internships throughout the county. TOGETHER FOR CHILDREN PROGRAM: Preventing

The event is chaired by the wellknown philanthropists Trish and Dan Bell, together with Maria and Superintendent of Schools, Alberto M. Carvalho. The 5th Superintendent 5K Challenge is taking place on March 7, 2020. “In this new year and new decade, our generous community has the fantastic opportunity to team up with M-DCPS and FNEI, and together, we can continue providing our students with world-class educational opportunities,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “Support of these signature events contributes to the transformation of children’s lives, through innovative and enriching programs and initiatives.”
