G

iven this year’s unique circumstances with COVID, it forces us to celebrate this special day differently. In “normal” times, it is important to acknowledge these incredible women, but this past year they were forced to add the many additional hats of teacher, IT technician, sports coach, and frequently wrestling referee. They were burdened with having to prepare three meals a day, constant cleaning up, shopping online, and often working their job from home, when able to have access to the family computer.

RECOGNIZING OUR MOTHER’S ON THEIR

SPECIAL DAY Mother’s Day is an annual reminder of the special relationship that you have with your Mother.

By Diane Landsberg

With preparation and being creative, you can give her the special day she deserves. You can always, with the permission of DAD, shop online. But here are a few suggestions that will only require a cease-fire and truce amongst the siblings that will insure her to smile at her little angels. With Dad’s assistance, (he needs to recognize her also) this list might be helpful for children: • • • • •

Secretly borrow her phone and record a loving message for her. Print photos off her phone and make a collage or scrapbook. Make her breakfast in bed. Pack a backyard picnic. Select a Netflix movie to watch together, make popcorn and have a discussion afterward. • • • • • • •

Do a museum tour online. Wash her car and clean out all the trash you have left inside. Use chalk to write a sweet message in the driveway or sidewalk. Daughters & Mother- plan a spa day, polish her fingers and toes. Work in the garden together. Plant herbs, flowers, or vegetables. Find a good receipe you all might like, then make it together. Clean your room without being asked to.

This is just a small list of suggestions to get you started. No one knows her better than you, so you know what she really likes and would enjoy getting or doing with her family.

The best part of a family that has isolated together, is that you can give your Mom a big hug. Another reminder, this Mother’s Day is a perfect day to also acknowledge a Grandmother, Special Aunt, Neighbor, or Teacher.

Learning about the conditions

that affects

AUTISM in

CHILDREN Blake and Jennifer Sando have three reasons for their commitment to autism research: Lizzie, Blake Jr., and Teddy.

L

izzie, 13, is a happy girl who enjoys going places. Blake Jr., 11, has an engaging smile and likes the outdoors. Teddy, 7, loves to read and type on his iPad. All three have autism and limited or no speech. The Sandos joined SPARK, an autism research study to help scientists learn more about the condition that affects their children. Each family member provided a saliva sample to SPARK, which scientists use to search for genetic changes related to autism. By comparing the genes of children and unaffected parents, researchers hope to learn more about which genetic changes contribute to autism. SPARK also has a program that matches families with scientists who are researching treatments, services, and other autism-related matters. Families decide whether to take part in these studies, and participation is optional. The Sandos began their autism journey a decade ago, when they noticed that Lizzie, their first child, was not crawling, walking, pointing, or interacting with the world the way other toddlers did. The family contacted the University of Miami – Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD), in south Florida. CARD is one of seven statefunded outreach and support centers based at universities in Florida. It’s also a SPARK clinical site that helps recruit families into the study. The Sandos sought early intervention services for Lizzie, who has a seizure disorder. They also met with a genetic

counselor, who told them their risk of having another child with autism was relatively low, Jennifer recalls. When the Sandos’ second child, Blake Jr., was born in 2010, they were vigilant, as many parents are with babies born after an older child’s diagnosis. “You’re looking really hard at the next one,” Jennco says. Like his big sister, Blake Jr. had delays in his early development. He was diagnosed between his first and second birthdays, as was his younger brother, Teddy, who was born in 2013. According to research, almost

19 percent of children with an older sibling with autism will receive an autism diagnosis themselves. Although he has learned much about autism since that first diagnosis a decade ago, Blake says there is more he wants to learn. “Frankly, with autism, you never really stop learning.” For more information about SPARK study, visit SPARKforAutism.org/CARD.

ave you ever talked to your child about boundaries? Limitations? The common things are easiest. Food, screen time, fun vs. study, and as they age you can get into drugs / alcohol and intimate behavior. These talks are vital, and the younger your child is, the better it is to start having these conversations. It develops trust in you. It also gives you all that you need to connect with them and let them enjoy life a bit too. As we pass the year mark of Covid in our lives, look back a moment and digest all that you and your family have been through. Things are not changing in the way we all had hoped, so it’s time for us to change.

**If you have never read the book, “WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?” - I encourage

you to do so, you can even read it with your kids depending on their age.** Life has forced change upon us. Maybe this is a sign. Maybe this is what we needed. Maybe it’s what your little angel(s) needed too! Change it up a bit. Do something you’ve never done before, especially in your own city. Ask your child what they want to try or give them three choices. One of the things my family likes to do, especially on weekdays off from school, is where we make a list of each person’s top 3-5 things they’d like to do. Then we analyze and prioritize the list, even the stuff mommy and daddy

don’t really “want” to do. Sometimes making a whole list isn’t an option or perhaps you are not comfortable with some of the choices your children have made or will make… what do you do then? My wife and I like to give our kids 2-5 choices we are comfortable with and empower them to choose which ones to do or which order we’ll do them all in. You can even start with a web search together of fun things to do. Just these web searches become an opportunity to spend time with one or more of your children as well as teach them about the value of the internet, and its dangers. More important than anything else is time. Your kids want you, and they want your attention and focus. The best part is, if you give it to them, the gift is really for you. Near the end of my father’s life, he used to buy my sister’s kids and my kids tons of stuff. And while much of the stuff was nice and we used it, it also was excessive. I used to beg him, “Dad, my kids want to be with you and spend time with you. Yeah, they like receiving boxes from UPS and Amazon, but they like seeing you more.” Time is the most precious resource you can learn to provide for your child. When you are present with your child, empowering them to make wise and confident choices, you are winning (and loving every second of it)!!!

How can we protect our kids from inappropriate or inaccurate content like adult content-pornography?

Cyber SAFETY FOR

KIDS

Being on the computer, IPad, or phone these days is a new reality for our children, how to protect them from malicious content? We interviewed Mr. Red Soto, who has over 15 years of experience in information technology and security. He has spoken at many international conference about cyber security like ISSA, ISC2, OWASP, DEFCON Economy and has also been featured in BBC, Forbes, VICE, Fox News, Univison and CNN.

You can establish parent controls Setup a family sharing ID https://support. apple.com/en-us/HT201084 Setup controls on app purchases and content limitation https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201304 This will prevent unauthorized purchases, block application installation, and set limits on content based on age. The above procedures apply to Apple devices, I also recommend for non-apple devices applications such as Mcafee https:// family.mcafee.com/ family safe, this can also be applied to non-apple computers. The goal is to limit, monitor, and control internet usage. The more time spent on the internet the likelihood of exposure increases.

How can parents protect their computers and data from pornography? Protect access to the computer, with strong passwords and physical safety. Install antivirus, make sure your computer is always up to date. Do not open unsolicited links, pictures, or movie files. Only browse and purchase from known and reputable stores. Set up multiple-factor authentication for every application or important site you frequent be it financial, social, or healthcare. Always do an additional backup to a hard drive or USB drive, encrypted, and place it in a safe.

What are the potential risks for young internet users? There are multiple risks for young internet users, the first and principal is the exposure to inappropriate content and also unknown, unverified persons that may be deceitful and even harmful to them.

How we can protect our kids from cyberbullying and spamming?

How can you protect your Privacy from online marketers and avoid content that is not desirable or malicious?

Limiting the exposure helps decrease the risk of cyberbullying or being targeted with spamming. Minors should not have social media accounts and if they do they should not be allowed to post anything that can reveal their identity, whereabouts, pictures, or even real names. Users who expose their life details have the most risk of being targeted. Parents should monitor and control access to these applications. Social media applications are made to drive the exposure of their users. Also, be very careful as well of online games that require players to give location and personal data, these places can also be as risky as social media.

Opt-out of every email list, Publish the least personal details you can of your persona. Apply the same principles of exposure as the children, the least you post the least they will know about you. Never place your sensitive details on ANY site, always try to say the least you can about yourself. Do not trust social media, they sell your information and they also get compromised and your information will probably be available in the open on the internet. Do not reply or answer emails, phone calls, or messages from unknown, private numbers. Never provide sensitive details over the phone or email.

Learning by Playing Early education could be a challenge when the kids have to study virtually and miss classes at school. The best way to teach our children is by playing and we can reinforce this at home.

By Nelly Lusich

Some programs like Osmo Genius Starter Kit are used by K-5 teachers in the classroom to teach phonetics, spelling, letter/number recognition, math to young children and it is available to download and to play at home. It has a game called Masterpiece app that teaches fine motor skills. Genius Starter Kit + Family Game Night comes with physical pieces that transform kids’ tablets into a hands-on learning tool, where they arrange the games pieces in the physical world to engage with characters on the screen. As children play, Launch & Learn Language Games by Lakeshore’s action-packed games, push, launch, match—and build vocabulary and language skills! Perfect for preschoolers and 1st-grade students from 3 to 6 years old. Children simply launch titles from the dispenser and place them on the corresponding spots on their game mats…matching rhyming sounds, upper- and lowercase letters, and beginning sounds. Each game comes with a sturdy tile dispenser, 48 wooden tiles and 8 different double-sided game mats—so kids can play again and again! Also Touch & Read Phonics Word Match by Lakeshore’s engaging match-ups, children 5 yrs. - 7 yrs. / Kindergarten - 2nd-grade master CVC words, vowel sounds, and blends, and digraphs—one phoneme at a time. Kids just select a word card and touch the textured dots as they say each sound. Then they read the full word—and find its matching picture card! Some other workbooks that you can get at Staples are ABC Mouse Premium Workbooks, “ I Can Count 1-100” Wipe-off Book Learning Printed Book for Mathematics, Level A Sight Words Pocket Multicolor Flash Card, Trend Enterprises “I Can Print Standard Manuscript” Multicolor Wipe-Off Book, Brighter Child Preschool–Kindergarten Trace Letters as a few examples. For kids 5 to 10, Osmo Coding Starter Kit is the most popular for the purpose of teaching coding step by step (basic to more advanced) at an age-appropriate pace. Designed for children to learn basic coding concepts including problemsolving, computational thinking, and coding fundamentals, in addition to more complex concepts, such as sequencing, looping, logic thinking, and pair programming. One of the earliest computerized learning systems from the 70s/80s is Speak & Spell, now back, and just like you remember! The first educational toy designed to help children learn to spell over 200 commonly misspelled words using a speech synthesizer. With multiple play modes and challenge levels, kids will have fun and learn at the same time!

A Mother’s Day with

Ilia Calderon ILIA, PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPBRINGING AND FORMAL EDUCATION. I was born in the small town of El Choco, Colombia in a humble and modest household. We were poor but very happy. My mother, Betty, was a school teacher and single mom. She raised me and my two sisters to be strong and independent women, which is why at an early age I decided to move away to Medellin to pursue my studies. I knew I would have better opportunities in a bigger city. I was able to study and become a professional, but I also faced discrimination because of the color of my skin. It was the first time in my life that I had to deal with that.

When did you move from Colombia to the United States? Was the transition to the US difficult?

So, a friend that knew a friend working in Telemundo, invited me over and the day I visited, I was introduced to the President of News, Joe Peyronnin. He immediately invited me to a casting. Of course, I took the opportunity (the one someone had denied to me before) and although I was nervous, I took the risk. They liked my casting so much I was offered a job and my life completely changed. I moved to the US in March and I welcomed the new adventure with open arms. The most difficult part of the transition was leaving my family behind. I am extremely close to my mother and sisters, and not seeing them often was emotionally difficult. We now all live in different

In 2000 some Telemundo executives traveled to Colombia to do castings for a news anchor position, but I was not called for the casting. The person in charge (a Colombian journalist) called every news anchor, except me. It hurt me but since I didn’t know anyone that could help me with contacts, I moved on assuming they had found the talent they were looking for. Eight months later, I came to Miami on vacation and I was curious to know how news teams worked in the United States.

22 Miami Kids Magazine April-May 2021

parts of the world, and thanks to technology I am able to easily communicate every day with them.

How did you meet your husband Gene? I met my husband Gene through my trainer Allan Angeles. He was supposed to setup Gene with another friend of mine, but when I heard about him and saw him, I was immediately drawn to him. Gene is caring, fun and ambitious. We had a lot of things in common, and it flowed. He also wanted a family and that was an important thing for me as well. He is a very smart, disciplined and a dedicated physical therapist. We have opposite personalities, but we complement each other in the things that really matter. He is a son of immigrants that came to the United States chasing a dream. Seeing him succeed and accomplish so many milestones in his career makes me proud and happy

to have chosen a wonderful partner that is also a role model for our daughter and our nieces.

You and your husband are a beautiful couple. Being an Afro-Latina woman and your husband being a Korean-American man, has that diversity brought challenges in your lives? The Jang-Calderon household is VERY diverse! We eat traditional Colombian cuisine such as a delicious bandeja paisa, but also love the traditional Korean kimchi. We speak Spanish and English, and we are raising our daughter Anna in a bi-racial, multicultural environment. At home we embrace our Black, Colombian, Korean and American roots. We are always focused on what we have in common and what is important for us. We share the same principles and morals and that is what we want to pass on to our daughter Anna.

patience. I travel a lot and work long hours, but I know that when I am home it is important to dedicate time to Anna. We talk about school, friends, her favorite books and television shows. We also talk about what I do at work, important interviews and although she is still a small child (she is 8) she is aware that I take my job seriously and love what I do. I know she is proud of me and all I hope is that I am being a good role model to her.

The fruit of your love is your daughter Anna. Which values are the most important for you as a family that you apply to raise her? Anna is the most important person in our lives. We teach her the importance of tolerance, acceptance and caring for others. She loves her friends, her family, teachers and even her neighborhood pets. We make sure she knows and cherishes the privilege of being a mix multi-racial child and encourage her to embrace differences. We also try to explain to her the political and social environment that we are living in the country, and in the world now. She has already expressed her thoughts about social challenges. We are proud of the caring person she is and to be honest, we really care more about raising a “straight A human being” than a straight A student. She is an “outside of the box” thinker and we love that!

You have a great profession and are dedicated to your career. you also won several awards during the years. How do you manage your time as a mom and as a professional? In order to balance a successful career and motherhood, the key is balance and
