Guilty Mother Are you a ?
Every mother feels guilt concerning their children, even the future Queen of England, Kate Middleton. In a recent People magazine interview, when asked if she felt any guilt concerning her three children, she was quoted as saying, “Anyone who doesn’t is lying; you’re always questioning your decisions and judgements”.
Mothers that feel guilt react in different ways; with anger, frustration, and hurt. It is terrible for a mother to feel that she is not good enough. Guilt is a painful emotion. Shame is a close second. On this upcoming Mother’s Day, let’s remove guilt from ourselves and express forgiveness to all other mothers that are experiencing it. Please express to another mom that they are not alone in their feelings and that “they got this”.
Mom guilt is a perception of a failure to measure up to an impossible standard and
unrealistic expectation. Give a gift to yourself and let it go. While you are at it, make every effort not to say to other mothers anything that might be perceived as judgmental or negative.
I recall a particular birthday party for a boy turning two-years-old. The usual conversation among the young moms was all about their children and the milestones their little ones had achieved. One mom stated that she sits with her son every day with flash cards and that he can read simple books: way ahead of others. The immediate reaction that was the rest of us failed our toddlers because we chose a different daily activity instead of instructing the next baby genius. Moms bragged about sleeping through the night, potty training success, eating habits, making cupcakes by hand, and much more. Instead of simply enjoying watching our children having fun, we sat there feeling guilty about
not being “Supermom”. I’m not even bringing up an area of conversation that addresses the working mom vs. the stay-at-home mom or the even worse guilty feelings of divorce that too many mothers experience.
Let it all go! Celebrate this Mother’s Day by loving being a mom, and knowing that you are doing the best you can.

Why is PHYSICAL ACTIVITY so IMPORTANT for HEALTH and WELL-BEING?
We know that staying active is one of the best ways to keep our bodies healthy. But did you know it can also improve your overall wellbeing and quality of life? Here are just a few of the ways physical activity can help you feel better, look better and live better. Because, why not?
IT’S A NATURAL MOOD LIFTER. Regular physical activity can relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and anger. Do you know that “feel good sensation” you get after doing
something physical? Think of it as a happy pill with no side effects! Most people notice they feel better over time as physical activity becomes a regular part of their lives.
IT KEEPS YOU PHYSICALLY FIT AND ABLE. Without regular activity, your body slowly loses its strength, stamina, and ability to function properly. It’s like the old saying: you don’t stop moving from growing old, you grow old from stopping moving. Exercise increases muscle strength, which in turn increases your ability to do other physical activities. It helps keep the doctor away.
By The American Heart Association
Stand up when you eat your apple a day! Too much sitting and other sedentary activities can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. One study showed that adults who watch more than 4 hours of television a day had an 80% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
Being more active can help you:
• lower your blood pressure
• boost your levels of good cholesterol
• improve blood flow (circulation)
• keep your weight under control
• prevent bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis.
All of this can add up to fewer medical expenses, interventions and medications later in life!
IT CAN HELP YOU LIVE LONGER.
It’s true, 70 is the new 60… but only if you’re healthy. People who are physically active and at a healthy weight live about seven years longer than those who are not active and are obese. And the important part is that those extra years are generally healthier years! Staying active helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with aging. So active adults maintain their quality of life and independence longer as they age.
“The American Heart Association recommends that kids and teens (ages 6-17) get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.” said Jennifer Cambpell, Executive Director of the American Heart Association Greater Miami/ Fort Lauderdale. “In today’s digital world, it can be hard to get your kids to put down the devices and do something active. But with a little effort, we can help them learn healthy habits now and find activities they can love for a lifetime.”

You can make a difference
BY CONTRIBUTING TO OUR COMMUNITY
Chapman Partnership has transformed the lives of more than 126,000 lives over the past 26 years. The homeless assistance provider manages two Homeless Assistance Centers located in Miami and Homestead with a total capacity of 800 clients per day. The residents work together with case managers to create a comprehensive personalized plan, guiding them throughout their journey with Chapman Partnership. Their wrap-around services include job and housing placement, on-site medical and mental health care, academic and family support, spiritual health and wellness support, and even a dog kennel. Far beyond the basics of emergency shelter, their innovative empowerment model focuses on self-sufficiency and housing stability and they have an incredible 90% success rate.
Now more than ever Chapman Partnership needs the time, talent, and treasure of its community to help rally resources to continue to support its mission. They are asking youth,
community, and business leaders to step into their mission by providing needed resources for urgent needs and move-out kits. More than 55 residents move out every month and they are working hard to ensure they have the needed resources for the next chapter in their life.
Items needed in these move-out kits include kitchenware, sheets, towels, rugs, cleaning supplies, and mattresses. Additionally, they are seeking new and gently used luggage from their Journey Home program that provides residents with suitcases and duffels bags to properly pack their clothes so they can begin their journey to a new home with dignity and respect.
In addition to the move-out kits and the luggage program, volunteers can sign up to serve a meal, donate their talent for activities like yoga or exercise activities, academic supplies for the students or help with children’s activities in the Family Resource Center. They are also looking for motivational
speakers to inspire their residents in special programming in the Spiritual Life and Wellness programming for the adult male and female residents. Chapman Partnership is counting on you – their village to help support families and individuals who are experiencing homelessness in our community. Step into the mission today and found out how you can make a difference. For more information to get involved, visit www. chapmanpartnership.org/get-involved/.

Parents, Listen
INNER VOICE
Summer, Summer, summertime, summertime! Like Will Smith reminded us, it is time to “sit back and unwind.” He also said, “Adjust the bass and let the Alpine blast.” As I write this, we are just into March and I am trying to get my mindset into pool parties, sprinklers in the yard and BBQ grills
fired up all over town. Wherever your summer leads you, it usually coincides with “chill” or “chillando” as my friends and I would say in my teens. “Let’s just sit back and unwind” the pretty voice in Will’s song reminds me once again.
Allow this season of change to be a season of unwind for you and for your family. The summer is not to ignore things that are required and don’t stop your exercise and mediation programs. Keep the kids washing the dishes. Allow your mind to unwind from the complexities of this world and your life. Permit yourself to chill, both physically and mentally.
Practice letting one thing go this summer that often bothers you, especially about your spouse or your children. What do they do that is SO ANNOYYYYYYIIINNNGGG?!?!?!?!?!
Let it go. Decide today, when these issues pop up this summer, that you are going to practice new inner voice talk first. What do you
By Coach Nick Bevilacqua
tell yourself when it happens? Change that story. Start with, it is okay, this has happened before, and it will happen again. You can also adjust your expectations. I feel we most often get upset when our expectations are failed to be met. However, how often do you set reasonable expectations and spell them out for your spouse or children to understand? Probably not very often. The truth is, those in your home don’t know that YOU are going to walk through the door when you do… If you struggle to change the inner voice first, try looking at their faces, right after they do the thing, and the instant before you say something in response. I bet their faces tell half of the story.

Nicole, tell us about your upbringing and education.
I was born and raised in Miami, FL, to the two most amazing parents anyone could ask for. My mother is brilliant and beautiful, and my father is strong and unbelievably selfless. I have two brothers who have been my protectors my whole life. As a family of five, we traveled the world. From South Africa to Australia, China, Canada, countless cities in the United States and Europe, and the list goes on, my parents never left us at home; we got to experience the world together. It truly shaped me to be the woman I am today. I was also very involved in sports. I played basketball and softball from elementary school to college. There isn’t a childhood memory that doesn’t involve a basketball court or a softball field with my dad as my coach and my mom as my #1 fan.
My education was essential. Without it, we could not play sports. We had to bring home good grades to be able to step out onto the field/ court. My parents always made it a point to instill in me that with an education, I could do anything my heart desires. I graduated from John A. Ferguson Sr. High and went on to study Journalism at Florida International University, where I graduated with a bachelor’s degree.
How did your passion for journalism start?
My passion for journalism started in elementary school when I was chosen to read the lunch menu on the P.A. system. I was so excited and loved every second of informing the whole school (Everglades K-8
Center) that we would have mac and cheese for lunch! Journalism has been the only thing I have ever wanted to do since I was a child, and I never doubted that I would find my way in this business. Telling stories that matter, that’s what matters. To be able to do it in my hometown, well, that’s just a dream come true. The opportunities to cover stories that impact our community… my community… my home…that I have had at Local 10 News have truly changed my life. To connect with people, hear their stories, and then work hard to help in any way that we can, well, that’s what it’s all about. We do everything we can to serve our community in the best way possible, and I wouldn’t want to do anything else.
How did you meet your husband, Roy?
I met my husband Roy in 2012 at another TV station we were both working for at the time. We dated for a little while in Miami until he moved to Orlando for almost five years. We then got engaged and married, all while still being long-distance! But when you know, you know, and nothing will get in the way of love. We both work in the TV business, which can be very challenging with very long days and crazy schedules, but at the end of the day, coming home to someone who understands everything that the job entails is such a blessing. Roy reminds me so much of my father; he is a man of faith, works so hard to give us the best life, always puts me first, and is indeed the love of my life.
What is your and Roy’s background?
I am Cuban American, and Roy is Mexican American, so we both have Hispanic backgrounds, and it’s something significant to us in the way we raise our son. We want
him to get to know both cultures and grow up learning how to speak Spanish!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love to work out! I grew up in the gym lifting weights and doing cardio and something I’ve kept up with to this day. I competed in a women’s figure competition and won first place in three categories: novice, open & overall! I also love running; I’ve run five half marathons in various U.S. cities and enjoy it very much! Anything that involves being active is what I’m doing in my spare time (when Reece is napping, of course ;))!
How do you feel being a new mom and now back at work? How do you manage your schedule?
Being a new mom has been life-changing. I honestly could not imagine my life without my son, Reece, and I honestly don’t know how I have lived this long without him. He is the most amazing little boy with such a personality! He melts my heart with his big brown eyes and his little smile that only comes out once in a while when he feels like it! I wake up with more purpose in life than ever before. He makes me want to be the best mommy in the world.
Coming back to work was challenging and emotional after spending so many weeks, just the two of us. However, being a journalist is what I have wanted to do my entire life, and I work hard to be in the position I’m in, and I never take it for granted. I certainly miss Reece when I’m away but working for Local 10 news gives me purpose outside of life as a mom. It allows me to continue making a difference in my and my family’s life and the lives of those in our community. Serving my community gives me joy and also completes me in a way that’s hard to describe. I think motherhood is about balance, and while it is hard to find balance every day, I think it’s important to try. The first few weeks of Reece’s life, I’m not sure if I ever got around to washing my hair or changing out of pajamas all day, but it got better, and every day gets even better than that. Life is certainly crazy and always busy, but we figure out one day at a time, and as long as we are happy and healthy and put our faith in God, that’s all that matters.
Please, leave a message to all the new moms reading this article: Trust yourself. Be open to advice, but know that you are making all of the right decisions and doing all the right things for your child. Even when life is going a million miles an hour, take a second, just one second, every single day, and make sure you kiss your baby and tell them you love them with all your heart.

The Growth MINDSET in YOUTH
“Don’t let school interfere with your education” This misquote was adapted from Mark Twain. The idea that school is not synonymous with education, is counterintuitive in our culture. School is a vital part of our education, however, it is only part of a larger life –long process.
“The mind is not a vessel that needs filling, but wood that needs igniting.”
- Plutarch
The #1 tool that you can empower your children with is “The Growth Mindset”. This mindset shows that you can and should learn ANYTHING you need to or want to learn! Learning is awesome and should be fun! Curiosity should entice you to ask questions and search for answers. The growth mindset can change your thinking so challenges and failures will be seen as opportunities to learn and grow.
Each of my 25 years of teaching in the traditional classroom was wonderful. I left 3 years ago, though, due to the growth mindset. I wanted to learn new tricks. I began a flourishing tutoring business for private school admission tests. I am able to continue my passion and teach students and assist families in different school choices in Florida and guide them through the overwhelming admissions process while learning skills about running my own business.
I recently met Karla Richey, the publisher for Miami Kids Magazine.I felt an instant connection to Karla because of her passion
to assist and inform South Florida families. When Karla asked me to be an educational contributor to this venerable publication, I was delighted for the opportunity.
Feel free to reach out for any academic concerns, K-12 admissions, or standardized test prep. Parenting and schooling can be overwhelming, but we are here to help!

What is Skilled Nursing AND DOES MY CHILD REQUIRE IT?
Skilled nursing is a healthcare specialty that is performed by, or under the supervision of, licensed professionals (experienced Registered Nurses). It’s the care given to a child that has a specialized need and requires a more in-depth and technical therapy to treat, manage, observe, and evaluate progress.
Skilled nurses are experienced in the treatment and management of various conditions such as:
• Cerebral palsy management and treatment.
• Diabetes management and treatment (Dexcom and Libre glucose monitoring)
• Seizure disorders.
• Gastro tube feedings and total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
• Respiratory and cardiac conditions such as asthma exacerbation.
• Chromosomal conditions, such as Down syndrome.
• Brain disorders, including childhood stroke, to name a few.
For parents, there are many questions that come across when deciding what medical daycare to choose for your child. Questions such as:
• Will there be a routine for nursing care/ therapies?.
• Do the nurses have the knowledge and experience to care for my child?.
AT FIRST KIDS PPEC , your child will receive the skilled nursing care required by our professionals. They will also be in an environment where they will grow socially alongside their peers. They believe in individualized care plans as every child is unique in their own way. This belief ensures that each child is receiving care that has been designed specifically for them in an atmosphere they look forward to each day!
To find out if PPEC services are right for you, call (305) 490 – 2009 to schedule a free consultation. They will even have a nurse come to visit you if that’s best! You may also visit their website at www. fkppec.com to learn more.
