Making Memories on Day

The greatest gift my father gave me was that he believed in me. He was by far my biggest supporter, and he always encouraged me to be the best child/person I could be. Unfortunately, he passed away too soon at the age of 62 from heart failure. But fortunately, my sons got to meet him, and because of me, still have memories of him. Father’s Day was always a big, celebrated day in our home, and this year, after two years of COVID, we are planning to make it a special celebration.

I am one of the old dinosaurs that always took hundreds of pictures, developed them and put them in photo albums. I also enlarged many, and the bedroom hallway is filled with framed pictures of four generations. I enjoy pointing out to my grandchildren pictures of their Dad in different stages, when he was only a baby, a small child, a teenager, and finally grown. They ask me many questions that give me the opportunity to tell stories of family history.

As this special day returns again in June, I recall some of the gifts for Father’s Day I gave to my Father as a child. They ranged from the construction paper cards, a hand-made ash tray (he didn’t smoke), an ugly tie, a fart joke book, and a funny barbeque apron. He always expressed delight and said he loved every ridiculous present he received. I always felt that I had succeeded in giving him the best gift. But the real gift he gave to me was his total, complete love.

Whatever you call him: Da-Da, Dad, Daddy, Father, Papa, Pops, Padre, Papi, or Big Daddy, this is the most important man in your life. Following the past two years of isolation and distance, I encourage everyone to re-establish the close connection that will have the most positive impact on your life. I can’t express enough about how proud I am of our four sons, and the gift to me of my blessed grandchildren.

So, get out the construction paper, and make a card for your Father!

WITH HANDS ONLY

Save a Life CPR

From June 1-7

Why Learn Hands-Only CPR?

Cardiac arrest – an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs – is a leading cause of death. Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby.

According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-ofhospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

Music Can Save Lives

Song examples include “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira” or “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. People feel more confident performing Hands-Only CPR and are more likely to remember the correct rate when trained to the beat of a familiar song.

When performing CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, which corresponds to the beat of the song examples above.

Call 911

The telecommunicator on the other end of the line can assist you while getting the emergency help you need on the way.

Take 90 Seconds to Learn How to Save a Life

Watch the 90-second video. Visit heart.org/

handsonlycpr to watch the Hands-Only CPR instructional video

and share it with the important people in your life. Hands-Only CPR is a natural introduction to CPR, and the AHA encourages everyone to learn conventional CPR as a next step. You can find a CPR class near you at Heart. org/CPR.

Be the Difference for Someone You Love

If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: A child, a spouse, a parent or a friend.

About 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes.

Less than 46% of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives. Women who have cardiac arrests are more likely to: • Have cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle • Have non-schockable rhythms that cannot be treated with an AED • Be older and live at home alone. Numbers tell the story. In a 2017 study of more than 19,000 people who had cardiac events: Only 39% of women received CPR from bystanders in public compared to 45% of men. Men’s odds of surviving a cardiac event were 23% higher than women’s.

COVID-19 CHILD AND INFANT CPR

If a child or an infant’s heart stops and you’re worried that they may have COVID-19, you can still help.

Step 1

Make sure the scene is safe. Check to see if the child or infant is awake and breathing normally.

Step 2

Shout for help.

If you’re alone, phone 9-1-1 from a cell phone, perform CPR with 30 compressions and then 2 breaths (if you’re willing and able) for 5 cycles, and get an AED.

If help is available, phone 9-1-1. Send someone to get an AED while you start CPR.

Step 3

Provide CPR with compressions and breaths (if you’re willing and able).

Start child CPR

Push on the middle of the chest 30 times at a depth of approximately 2 inches with 1 or 2 hands. Provide 30 compressions and then 2 breaths. Repeat cycles.

Start infant CPR

Push on the middle of the chest 30 times at a depth of approximately 1½ inches with 2 fingers. Provide 30 compressions and then 2 breaths. Repeat cycles. breathing normally.

How to get your child into an elite

Private School

When it comes to the private school admissions process, preparation begins years in advance. While the admissions team is looking for mature, diligent, curious students, the mechanisms to get there start before kids enter the classroom. Strong students start early.

When it comes to the private school admissions process, preparation begins years in advance. While the admissions team is looking for mature, diligent, curious students, the mechanisms to get there start before kids enter the classroom. Strong students start early.

Reading: Make sure your children love it!

Young readers become fast learners. They harbor vast vocabularies, retain keen insights, and excel in information processing. Whatever titles keep the pages turning is what your child should be reading. Reading for pleasure is the backbone of later educational endeavors. Implementing 30 minutes of reading into your child’s daily routine helps form productive habits early on while also limiting screen time.

Interviews: Talking to adults is good practice

A strong and confident handshake with eye contact will be your child’s first impression. Have your children practice when they meet any adult. Your kids will become comfortable and confident in speaking with adults.

Good Grades

Competitive schools will look to admit top students. “A”s are better than “B”s, so you

should encourage the habit of academic success. The key components are being attentive every day in class and taking pride in each assignment.

Test Scores

Many elite private schools still rely on standardized test scores such as the SSAT, ISEE and HSPT. These tests are often not grade-level and can seem insurmountable to children and their families. This is why hiring outside help is such a popular route.

Who Tutors can help

The Admissions process can be overwhelming but Who Tutors can guide your family through any and all stages of the admissions process. We are test experts. We have free content prep on our website and offer 1-on-1 tutoring, small group classes, and online classes to teach students how to hack the admission tests. We teach in a positive, colorful, child-appropriate fashion that builds confident test-takers. Our testtaking strategies have been developed for over a decade. Our “Test Hacks” are memorable and effective.

We can work together to earn your child admission into an elite private school that fits their unique skills and interests. Call, email, or find us on Instagram or Facebook or you can use your camera to scan the QR code to access or website, www.WhoTutors.com.

What does

TO YOU? SUMMER MEAN

Its written in the by-laws by George Washington himself. I know these things… LOL!!! You are allowed to lounge, both in Miami and out of it. It is a vital part of our existence.

Work hard, play hard, rest a little bit here and there, stop and make sure to smell the roses and the coffee, and repeat. Easy enough, but so often, we the adults, we the parents, forget it is time to chill. It is actually worked into the schedule. And for most industries (except mine) summer time is more of a down time. It is when many people take time off from work to travel, to visit family, to go see the mouse

and his Jedi friends, etc. First and foremost, your kids will be so appreciative. The bad news is they won’t thank you for 20-40 years, and they may never thank you fully.

However, giving up a little bit of you this summer, giving up a little bit of control, allowing the lounge factor to take over, well, that’s a good thing. Secondly, your spouse will be so appreciative, and the bad news, see above. BUT!!! Thridly, future YOU will be SO appreciative. Calming down a hair (or maybe a ton) has numerous advantages for your long term health.

The sooner you learn that most stuff really doesn’t matter, the better for your short term health. A year or so ago, my family (wife and 3 children) were up in Pennsylvania visiting family. I am the youngest of all my cousins on my father’s side and I was visiting 2 of my older ones.

Multiple times during our 8 days up there, my cousin Lance would come into the room, while my wife or I was lecturing our children about something, and he would say, well, actually he’d yell, “Hey you kids, stop having fun!” and then he would walk out. Each time it got me thinking, you know, cuz he’s right kinda thing. SMH… I’ve become my dad! (insert crying emoji here) This summer, put your parents to bed and let the kids and yourself, enjoy some extra lounge and fun time. Have a great, fun, and safe summer. Enjoy!!!!

Are you lounging yet? You do live in Miami right? You do realize that the Miami summer is unlike any other summer on earth? You are allowed to lounge here.

College costs increase exponentially every year, creating a burden on both the student and the parent. Estimates show that by 2030 the average tuition could double the current rates.

By planning ahead and creating a life insurance strategy that gives you the option to save for college can give you and your child peace of mind. An insurance policy with Las Madrinas de Los Seguros with a tax-free cash value component can be used towards educational expenses.

Some prepaid plans in the market don’t offer a high value return such as the one offered by Life Insurance, that’s why it’s important to start the policy when the child is in his early years, allowing the policy to yield a higher return.

You may have many more questions such as “what happens if my child does not want to go to college?” or “what other uses does the accumulated value have?” and more importantly, “how can I get this College Funding plan?”

We have all the answers, contact us now to learn more.

A Father’sDay with celebrity

JET TILA

Jet, tell us about your background and formal education.

My parents moved to the US in 1966 and started the first Thai restaurants and markets in the history of the US in 1972. I worked every position between all of their business. I dropped out of high school and then went to French and Japanese Culinary Schools. I had a combination of formal training and real-life experience.

When did you realize you had a passion for cooking?

I’ve been cooking since I was a kid until now so it was never a passion until I realized in my 20’s that I really was good at it and enjoyed it.

How did you meet your wife, Ali? Did you win her heart with your cooking skills?

While cooking in restaurants I was also teaching at many home stores in LA like Sur LA Table where young professionals took recreational classes.

and his family

Ali attended many of those classes in the mid 2000’s. I left for Las Vegas where she came and visited. That’s where we started our romance years later. She loves cooking as much as I do and we’ve bonded over it. She was a full time special ed teacher for 15 years then retired to help me build our business. She then went to pastry school, wrote a book with me and we’ve been married 11 years now.

You have two children. What family traditions did you learn from your parents that you apply at your home?.

Ren is 7 and Amaya is 10. Being a mixed family, our family, traditions come from Europe and Asia. We have a great food culture in house, being Thai, Chinese and Irish.

Describe a typical dinner at the Tila’s home? Do you fusion American food with

Asian techniques when you cook at home?

A week of meals can be fried rice, roasted chicken, sushi, Teriyaki to shepard’s pie. It’s never really fusion more than it’s a meal from one region.

How do you celebrate Father’s Day with your kids?

The kids and Ali will usually wake up early and make breakfast together. We have breakfast and open gifts. I’ll do the same for Ali on mother’s day. It’s important that everyone helps cook the meal. We also ask that the kids hand make cards and gifts.

Please leave a final message to all the parents reading this article.

Food is such an important part of family culture. It’s a time to learn, teach, put down the devices and talk. There are so many lessons too in cooking, math, history, geography, science and it keeps the kids involved.

Visit GRAND CAYMAN MARRIOTT BEACH RESORT

In the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea, only a 1.5-hour flight from Miami, come discover the magical island of Grand Cayman and all its alluring charm. The warm sun, white sandy beaches, beautiful reefs, and enticing culinary scene is enough to bring visitors from around the world. The charm of this island is embraced and elevated by a stay at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort, lovingly referred to as the Beach House.

This property is a destination in itself. Located along the iconic Seven Mile Beach, the Beach House offers picturesque water views and sunsets that dreams are made of, multiple restaurants and bars offering an array of international and local fare, friendly and attentive staff, and an attention to detail that can’t be found elsewhere.

As soon as you enter your spacious room you will feel right at home with the comfortable layouts and upscale amenities. The rooms are inspired by a timeless coastal design with a bit of local Cayman flair. For ultimate relaxation at the end of the day, cozy into the ultra-comfortable plush robes and slippers and take in the view from the balcony. Rooms also come with coffee makers, safes, flat screen TVs, and a mini fridge. If traveling with the whole family, two-room suites are available for extra space to comfortably accommodate everyone.

For breakfast we found everything we wanted at Anchor & Den, the hotel’s signature restaurant which offers a la carte options or buffet every morning. Sundays are special because they offer the best brunch on the

island featuring omelets made to order, fresh pastries, breakfast meats, pancakes, and so much more. Brunch comes with bottomless bubbles, mojitos, and margaritas. If you’re in the mood to stay in bed, you can order room service too.

The Beach House offers a variety of weekly activities for the whole family such as family game night, poolside movie nights, paddleboard yoga classes, and summertime snacks by the pool like popcorn, cookies, snow cones, and more.

Located close to George Town and Camana Bay, your options for shopping, dining, and sight seeing abound. You can also explore like a local by taking advantage of the Linus bicycle rentals, offered as part of the resort

fee, and cruise down the road to any other beach access point. All beaches are public in Grand Cayman, so take a picnic and a bottle of wine and discover other unique areas of Seven Mile Beach.

At the Beach House, they encourage the sunset ritual, whatever that may be for each individual. Soak it up from the pool deck, take it in with a cocktail from Vista Bar, or admire it over an early dinner at Veranda Restaurant on their waterfront terrace. Whichever way fits your fancy, the sunsets always impress.

The only way to round out your stay at this wonderful beach resort is with a stop at Botanika Union, the spa whose mission is to create an “art of living routine” for all their guests. Offering a full range of spa services, including holistic treatments like reiki and reflexology, this spa is focused on making each treatment personalized and special. Be sure to request the aromatherapy add-on.

All in all, the Beach House offers a premium stay with a mid-range price tag. It has all the offerings of a large-scale hotel, but with a boutique

feel that is cozy and inviting providing that “home away from home” nostalgia. Next time you’re looking for a quick jaunt to get away for a few days, you’ll find the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort will tick all the boxes for the perfect Caribbean holiday that’s easy to get to with options galore!

There are many fun attractions near the hotel:

Turtle Centre, where the entire family will learn about the green sea turtles, have a chance to snorkel in their saltwater lagoon, and slide down the twisty waterslide.

Stingray City is easily accessible from the hotel, allowing you to make a splash with the friendly stingrays the sandbar is known for.

Does your child have a medical condition that makes communication challenging?

The purpose and goal of speech therapy is to facilitate communication and there are several ways to communicate. A licensed speech language pathologist (SLP) will determine what methods a child will benefit from. Being able to express needs, wants, thoughts and emotions is what speech therapist aim for.

The SLP will evaluate the child and formulate a care plan specifically designed to address the barrier/need. Most therapy sessions are designed with the intent for the child to see this as a positive and fun experience. Therapeutic fun activities such as, popping bubbles or a simple game of ‘ blowing the tissue’ are actually teaching them to use their muscles to create a word. At First Kid’s PPEC, our licensed speech therapists work with your child to improve their overall dayto-day communication skills and vocabulary. Speech therapy is also used for individuals

with feeding difficulties or swallowing disorders. G-tube feeders that are transitioning to oral feeding, also require speech therapy as they will need to learn how to feed by mouth. For children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) in particular, can be selective (picky eaters) and feeding time is often met with a lot of resistance from care givers.

First Kid’s PPEC believes in individualized/ patient center care as every child is unique in their own way. This belief ensures that each child is receiving care that has been designed specifically for them in an atmosphere they look forward too each day.
