Imagine having a special needs child…..

You receive a birthday party invitation for a family member’s 6-year-old son. You immediately envision many people outside on a lawn, which makes it impossible to take a wheelchair. There is loud music, excited children, possibly a clown or other entertainment, and a ton of sugary foods and drinks. You know that your child will not be able to cope with this, so you send your regrets to the dismay and disappointment of your other children.

As a parent of a special needs child (I dislike that term and prefer a child with restrictions), you are forced to make very difficult decisions as to when and where is an environment that everyone can relax and enjoy as a family. Dealing with regular day-to-day living is difficult enough. It is also important to make the request of family and friends to take your other child or children so they don’t miss out on the fun. Don’t feel guilty!

Meanwhile, it is important to be creative and seek “safe” activities the family can all participate in and minimalize to possible inevitable meltdowns if your child is hypersensitive to new environments and reacts to over-stimulation. I googled “Safe activities for children with special needs, and was pleased to see many suggestions. I read that playing is a necessary life lesson that is necessary for every child, regardless of their abilities or limitations. We learn how to adapt and learn new skills, which is as important as reading or solving a math problem. It also can teach others kindness, patience, and acceptance.

As a family, plan to go to a park that you have checked out before, explaining what to expect and what restrictions you might encounter. Preparation is necessary for any family with small children, but a special needs child

reassuring them and celebrating small milestones. Being flexible is necessary as the length of your stay may be guided by your child.

I strongly recommend a visit to La Porte Farms in Sebastian (www.laportefarms. com). It has free admission, is a petting animal farm that is owned by a woman that has no use of her arms or legs due to multiple sclerosis and strokes, so everything is accessible. A child can safely touch and feed goats, chickens, pigs, horses, ducks, monkeys, a large variety of birds and much more. They can ride a train, have access to a free book library, all while enjoying a delightful time with the family. If you know of other special locations, please share.

Let’s all go out there and have fun with our families.

requires more advanced planning. Consider using your phone to take photos to show what they will see so they are prepared. You can become your child’s best advocate while
11October-November 2022 Miami Kids Magazine

It’s a spooky time of year! Ghosts and goblins are creating a fright. But there’s something scarier than well-meaning trick-or-treaters that our community needs to beware. That is the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use. Also known as vaping, e-cigarette use by youth is a critical health issue.

In South Florida and across the country, e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product by most youth and adolescents. E-cigarettes are undoing decades of progress made in reducing youth tobacco use, and they risk addicting millions of young people to nicotine.

The liquid solutions in e-cigarettes typically include nicotine and chemical flavorings, and when heated, they create an aerosol that a user inhales deep into their lungs.

“E-cigarettes do not produce tobacco smoke, but rather an aerosol, often mistaken for water

vapor, that consists of fine particles. Many of these particles contain varying amounts of toxic chemicals, which have been linked to heart and respiratory diseases and cancer.” said Dr. Marcus St. John, American Heart Association Greater Miami/ Fort Lauderdale Board President.

The facts are startling. According to the American Heart Association, taking a stand against e-cigarette use among youth is critical because their long-term health impact is unknown. We do know that nicotine has harmful effects on the adolescent brain and causes addiction, and that kids who use e-cigarettes may transition to traditional cigarettes. Teens, and often their parents, are dangerously unaware of the damaging health impacts.

E-cigarette devices are sometimes called “e-cigs,” “vapes,” “e-hookahs,” “vape pens,” and “electronic nicotine delivery systems”

or “ENDS.” Some devices look like regular cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Many are small and look like USB flash drives, pens, sleek tech gadgets and other everyday items. Many also don’t emit large clouds of aerosol, making them discreet to use – even in a classroom.

Resources are available to help parents and schools talk with youth about the e-dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping. The American Heart Challenge’s Truth About Vaping, Smoking and Nicotine lesson plan can help faculty, administrators and parents engage in meaningful conversations with their students. Proactive programming provides an opportunity for students to feel a part of the conversation. The fact remains that it’s easier to stop a child from using tobacco if they never start. For more information, visit heart.org/vaping.

Is your child having some difficulties in school Ask Mr. D?

Mr. D,

My son absolutely hates reading. I try to make him read everyday, but he just stares at the page. What should I do? How do I raise a reader?

- Dubious Diana

Thank you for your question. I am frequently asked this, so know that you are not alone. My tutoring company uses something called: Flipping the Script. Well, Diana, it’s time to flip the script. In order to get your child to fall in love with reading, let him read the things he wants to read! Comic books, graphic novels, sports magazines, books about race cars or dinosaurs - whatever it is. Take him to the public library; they have great resources. Take him to the book store, and give him $20 or $30 to get a new book. Whatever gets the pages turning is the goal. Make it a fun experience. As long as he reads something, even a book below his reading level, his reading speed and comprehension will increase. Good luck!

Mr. D,

My daughter is bad at math. She doesn’t put the effort into knowing her multiplication tables. She sometimes will skip or not complete homework assignments. How can I get her to care?

- Frantic Fran

I might start to sound like a broken-record, but you need to flip the script on math. People, and especially children, enjoy doing the things that they are good at. Building up your child’s confidence in math comes from

learning their math facts. Whether it’s flashcards or a game, get your child to a point where they are getting the answers right. When they know the answers, they’ll like math and they’ll start caring about it because they know they are a good math student. Good luck!

My daughter studies very hard for her exams. She is very smart and gets A’s on all her homework assignments, but on the day of the test she gets so worried that she blanks out. Can she overcome this without medication or another serious intervention?

- Worried William

Well, William, I think it will be all about relaxation techniques for your daughter. She needs to learn some breathing techniques for before and during the test, and most importantly, how to trust herself, her preparation, and her answering abilities. Just by breathing deeply and bringing oxygen into her brain, that should be enough to calm her down. If you don’t believe me, try taking ten deep breaths right now and you will feel less stressed. Learning relaxation techniques will go a long way for any test-taker. She sounds like a hard-worker and we want to see that hard work pay off on her exams. Good luck!

My son is totally addicted to his iPad and won’t leave the house without it. Help! How can I break his addiction? How much screen time is too much for his age of 10?

Tired - Tina

Tina, I’m sure you are tired of his addiction to the ipad. Some of the smartest people in the world are in Silicon Valley making phones and ipad more addictive for adults and children. Children are more susceptible to this addiction before their brains are fully developed. Which is why tobacco and alcohol age restrictions are the way that they are. So, you really need to win this fight. You need to limit his screen time and get him involved in a sport or outdoor activity. Screens needs to be limited and a reward or for schoolwork only. But, you really should find alternatives to screens in general. They will get enough screens in their lives. Remember, you are the adult. You are the one who knows that screen addiction can be detrimental to the overall development of the child, so take control and be confident. You know what to do! Good Luck, Tina!

Living with Constant Change

Fall is one of those seasons that is tough to appreciate unless you’re watching the leaves on trees changing to those magnificent colors of red, orange, yellow, and shades of brown. This is not something we experience down here in South Florida. Palm and oak trees are not evergreen trees. They go from green to brown, and we don’t understand all that, LOL!!!

However, the fall also represents transition and change. What in your life are you in transition mode? Make sure to give yourself a little extra love and patience in that area. Ask your partner and your child for help and prayers in that area of your life. Are you trying something new? Are you dieting? Exercising? Getting to bed earlier? Spending less time on your phone? Less time on Social

Media? Less time judging or criticizing? What is it? Ask for help!

What needs a change in your life? Get a plan, maybe get a coach, and set up your support system. Then, you MUST get to work. Remember, in the fall; the sun goes down sooner, it starts to get darker sooner. In times of transition and change, it’s going to be hard, it’s going to feel like the sun is setting on your life. You are going to find yourself lost in a dark place along your journey. Your light source is your support system. Your flashlight is your support system. Your GPS is your support system.

What in your life has run its course? What have you had enough of? What have you experienced for the last time?

My wife and I go through ups and downs like any marriage and any family. We have three children, and our oldest is closing in on 15, so you might imagine what we deal with. However, the biggest issue Carla and I have is when we do not communicate our desires, needs, expectations to each other. If you have your plan in place… If you have your support systems set up… If you have communicated to your loved ones that you need their prayers in this area of your life, imagine how much easier it will be for THEM.

We so often get frustrated when our loved ones do not meet our expectations; however, how often do we explain that to them? How often do we show them patience when they need more understanding so they can help you?

As we leave the start of school and head full speed into the holiday season, focus on yourself while showing and spreading your love to those closest to you. Prepare your mind and soul for the craziness of life. You are worth it. Your loved ones are worth it.

17October-November 2022 Miami Kids Magazine

College costs increase exponentially every year, creating a burden on both the student and the parent. Estimates show that by 2030 the average tuition could double the current rates.

By planning ahead and creating a life insurance strategy that gives you the option to save for college can give you and your child peace of mind. An insurance policy with Las Madrinas de Los Seguros with a tax-free cash value component can be used towards educational expenses.

Some prepaid plans in the market don’t offer a high value return such as the one offered by Life Insurance, that’s why it’s important to start the policy when the child is in his early years, allowing the policy to yield a higher return.

You may have many more questions such as “what happens if my child does not want to go to college?” or “what other uses does the accumulated value have?” and more importantly, “how can I get this College Funding plan?”

We have all the answers, contact us now to learn more.

He strives to be a role model on this front and motivate others to go out and live their best through motivational speaking whether to schools, athletes, or groups of any size.”

What has been the most important thing in overcoming adversity and challenges in your life?

The most important thing in overcoming adversity/ challenges in my life has been my “never give up” attitude. I truly believe that individuals can accomplish amazing things if they don’t give up and keep fighting for their dreams. Having goals in mind and striving to the achieve them is so important. Everyone will have obstacles that come along but it’s what you do and the attitude you have that matters most.

What is your advice for people trying to start a new life who are facing fear?

Trying new things can be scary. Every single ski race I competed in I was nervous and often a little scared at the top. However, with the right mindset and attitude you can take that fear and turn it into something exciting. Try to keep an open mind, remember to breathe, and most importantly have fun. You might not like everything new you are trying but taking those three points will make it an amazing learning experience!

Moreover, it will inform about organizations that can assist individuals with disabilities in achieving their goals.

Fall GUIDE Activity

Teeth-Friendly tips by American Pediatric Dental Group

• Don’t give harmful oral bacteria an all-day buffet! If you’re planning on eating a lot of candy, it’s better to eat it all in one sitting than spreading it out across an entire day.

• Drink water after enjoying some candy.

• Wait half an hour after eating candy, then brush your teeth!

• Schedule a cleaning appointment to make sure Halloween hasn’t had a lasting effect on your teeth and get ahead of the game!

Childproofing your home for the prevention of domestic accidents

Nowadays, parents are forced to stay away from home for more extended periods once they are committed to their work, the hustle and bustle of their chores, and much of their time, stuck in traffic jams.

But how can parents be away from home keeping their peace of mind and knowing that their kids will be adequately protected within their home?

To offer safety to our little angels at home, it is essential to research and find what is on the market to keep your house childproof.

If you live in an apartment or have a balcony at home, the best alternative is the installation of high-resistance safety nets in all windows, balconies, stairs, mezzanines , and risky areas, with the advantage of not changing the facade. Safety nets offer low cost and practically no alteration to the aesthetics of the building or residence.

According to several studies, drowning, falls, and carelessness is the leading causes of fatal accidents in children up to 14 years old. What is the explanation for such a frightening statistic?

According to pediatricians and child safety

specialists, not considering seemingly simple risks is primarily the reason for most accidents with kids since a few seconds of distraction are enough for them to take place.

When the subject is about domestic accidents, everyone agrees: the best way to avoid them is to adapt the house to children’s needs, besides constantly supervising them.

Its installation is immediate and is carried out through a system of stainless-steel hooks and resistant polyethylene threads, which allow it to be installed in any window, balcony, staircase, or risky area, regardless of layout. Such installations, however, require specific technical criteria, so they must be carried out by specialized and suitable companies.

All Netting Solutions, ANS personnel have several years of experience in the netting market, only working with top-notch safety products in their installations.

Other essential factors that you should consider reviewing at home are:

Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Both of these devices are critical. Make sure to test it monthly and change the batteries.

First aid kit. Make sure to be trained and other caregivers in infant CPR.

Outlet covers. Avoid your little one from inserting their fingers and/or toy pieces inside outlets.

Furniture mounts. Prevent heavy furniture like TVs, dressers, and bookcases from falling onto your child. Secure them to the wall with mounting hardware and safety straps.

Prevention saves lives. Safety first, always.
