We are proud that during the month of January, we were able to give away a toiletry basket that includes a hand sanitizer, face mask, hand soap, towel, and a toothbrush to one reader per day on our social media pages. We hope that while having the virus around, we maintain social distancing and keep washing our hands and taking the respective precautions.

The sleigh bells are jingling as we approach the Holiday Season! It is the time of the year when we reunite with family members and closes friends. What a magical season.

Happy 2021! We are super excited for this new year with much hope and expectations for good things to happen for all of us! The vaccines are here! We are happy that our elderly and first responders are getting the vaccine and soon most of us are going to get it also.

The Gift Giving of

After months and months of isolation and cancelled special events, gatherings, parties and special holidays due to covid, we need to make this year holiday season extra special. I would like to suggest we change how to celebrate and make it more meaningful for the entire family. Call a family meeting to brainstorm and have input from everyone. Important points to cover is an agreement to “spread the joy and gratitude” throughout this upcoming year. Make a list of all individuals that should be shown a little appreciation. My list includes my doctor, dentist, Vet and their staff where I will drop off an orchid, cookies and a card in acknowledging of the expert care I have received. I have a lawn care crew, pool guy, and housekeeper that come every week throughout the year. Yes, they are paid, but a gesture to thank them all is important. Think of teachers, babysitters, coaches, and car-pool parents, etc. It is also suggested that all family members express love and appreciation for one another. Parents

might need to remind the young brother and sister what is lovable about one another, but necessary.

This year I will schedule a baking night with my small grandchildren. We will create delicious treats and home-made cards to be given to teachers, school staff, neighbors, and others. I am confident that they will have fun and feel proud of their creations and learn the valuable lesson of thanking others. I won’t complain having to clean sprinkles and glitter spread all around the table and floor!

Most children make a list of what they would love to receive for gifts. Do they really need more “stuff”? Schedule a day to go through their toys and donate gently used toys to a shelter, Miami Rescue Mission or Goodwill, etc. Consider limiting their gift list and come up with ideas for “family gifts”, that can enjoy throughout the year with everyone. We are fortunate to have much to select from. A family membership to Zoo Miami, Fairchild Gardens, Children’s Museum, State

Parks comes to mind. Also, for the sports enthusiasts, we have the Heat, Dolphins, Panthers, Hurricane’s nearby by. It can be the gift that keeps on giving. My adult sons have treasured memories of attending Heat games with Dad. It wasn’t so much of cheering on the team, but filling up on junk food without the disapproval of Mom. They had fun and I enjoyed a quit house to myself.

This can also be an opportunity to create new family traditions. Birthday’s are special, but to select a Family Anniversary date can be fun to annually have a small party with one another. One family used the age of one (8) and the other (11) to create August 11th for an annual family anniversary. Also possibly rotate once a month for each family member decide what to do as a family. Ideas can be going to a movie, special restaurant, cooking a meal all together, etc.

Holidays are wonderful and can provide a day to reinforce how important we are to one another. Start planning!

These days it is common to see families in restaurants sitting together and eating a meal without talking between them; instead, each family member is on their cell phone creating a high level of stress while receiving work emails or homework reminders to set a few examples.

Sitting together as a family and having a conversation will reduce the stress on each individual, including children. It will help you to bond and connect with your family.

The American Heart Association releases a new survey highlighting mealtime’s impact on mental well-being. Of the 1,000 U.S. adults nationwide surveyed in September 2022 the vast majority (84%) say they wish they could share a meal more often with loved ones. Nearly all parents report lower stress levels in their family when they regularly connect over dinner.

stress relief. In fact, the survey found 67% of people say sharing a meal remind them of the importance of connecting with other people, and 54% say it reminds them to slow down and take a break.

Those surveyed say they are more likely (59%) to make healthier food choices when eating with other people but have difficulty aligning schedules with their friends or family to do so, according to the survey. Overall, respondents reported eating alone about half of the time.

Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

I realize it may not always be the happiest for many; it may also be difficult to remain happy throughout the season. We’ll come back to that part, as staying happy for extended periods is almost impossible…However, there are things you can do to prepare. The holidays are meant for joy and love, yet for some, they bring up pain from either distant or near pasts, or maybe even both, and of course, there is our current situation; anything can happen or pop up to derail us.

First, you must attempt to recognize that none of this is “happening to you” it is just happening, and you are choosing how you respond to it. So, we can immediately set up reminders for ourselves on how we want to respond and practice how we will respond. Second, we must not beat ourselves up when we make a mistake. Own your blow-up or overreaction, apologize and move on. Staying mad or sitting in your frustration is a choice.

One of the things I like to do each day is to give thanks and set a daily intention. This morning, I gave thanks for my life, my wife, my children, my home, my hot water for my shower, my French press coffee maker, and so on. I also set my intention of echoing compassion and love when given the opportunity. That doesn’t mean I will be able to 100% keep it perfect each time, yet it helps. AND!!! I am getting better, especially when I drive.

Try writing things down this season. What do you need to do? Gifts? Meals? Where do you need to go? Playdates? Parties? What is going on? Does your family know about the schedule? Is everyone aware? Are you traveling? A lack of information causes anxiety in some. Try sharing a calendar or itinerary with your spouse and your kids. Traveling in and of itself can be high stress for some.

One of the most overlooked things humans need to recover is rest, yet it seems during the holidays when we get the MOST AMOUNT of TIME OFF, we go go go go go and no rest, rest… Learning to say no to things is boundary number 1. You cannot be in two places at once, so you should not even try.

What are you going to do as a family this season? How much time do you spend together? How much free time do you allow your kids to have? Are they going to study at all? Are they going to have some activities? A camp? A workout program? Communication and honesty are key to a happy and successful holiday season! Now, let’s get back to that joy thing from earlier… Once we have it, how do we keep it? Keep in mind that you will lose it from time to time. However, the time it is lost is yours to choose from. Easier said (or read) than done. When you find yourself down, impatient, or frustrated, give yourself a few minutes to calm down. Listen to meditation if you can, or listen to calming music or sounds. Make sure you explain yourself to your family so they can help lift you instead of wondering what they did wrong. You can do it! The grandfather was their main teacher, from whom they learned values such as honesty, responsibility, work and passion for the business world.

At a very early age, they began to sell the products obtained from the family farms in order to help with household expenses. They quickly realized that to fulfill their dreams they had to emigrate from Cuba. As many immigrants coming to the USA, they come with nothing but dreams and yearning for freedom for themselves and the entire family they left behind.

After several unsuccessful attempts, they fortunately made it to the United States in 2002 and with their hands empty and their hearts full, they began to work harder than ever to make all their sacrifices count. In order to start their own business, they started growing and selling plants in Homestead. Just a few months later they opened their own nursery.

A few years later, the brothers bought a property on Krome Avenue, for which no one imagined much of a future. However, both being ordinary men, with extraordinary vision, they began to work to create more than just a fruit stand, or a restaurant, but rather an environment

for the enjoyment of the whole family. By Brothers starts out as a small juice, smoothie and fruit stand. Later came the delicious and typical Cuban food that distinguishes them. Little by little they began to expand thanks to

the hard work of the whole family. Currently By Brothers is an icon of nature with unparalleled views and landscapes located in Miami-Dade Florida, it has a petting farm with tortoises, emus, ostrich, goats, cattle and a donkey that has accompanied us on the journey from the beginning. It also has a free-flying aviary with more than thirty-five species of birds.

And incomparable outdoor activities for the enjoyment of the whole family that include pedal karts, corn pit, obstacle course, a huge jump pad, two trains that take you around the property, and many more activities.

By Brothers Family Park is a dream come true. What started out as a small idea has grown into the biggest attraction on Krome Avenue and the largest recreation complex in South Florida.

For the Holiday season, starting on December 3rd, they will have a Christmas Town.
