The vaccines are here! We are happy that our elderly and first responders are getting the vaccine and soon most of us are going to get it also.

Raising our children for every parent is an unknown adventure. When you are given a child with a disability, whether it is emotional, behavioral, developmental, or physical, it can be very challenging and rewarding. It is first necessary to seek out the most qualified specialists and receive a proper diagnosis. Sometimes, this requires a 2nd or 3rd opinion. You are your child’s best advocate.

You can research and gain as much knowledge about their condition and possible treatments with the internet. Be cautious not to jump to medicate too quickly until you have weighed all the pros and cons of different options. All medications can have side effects affecting their small, growing bodies and minds. My youngest son, now a very successful businessman, was a handful as a child. It resulted in many teacher conferences and discussing the option to medicate him. Instead, I enrolled him in afterschool sports, where he excelled and even received his 2nd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. We were blessed with a fabulous second-grade teacher who was patient and understanding about his hyperactivity and followed my suggestion to have him run papers to the office, clean the whiteboards, pass out books, etc. She didn’t take me up on my joke suggestion to clean the basketball court with a toothbrush!

I Googled, in preparation for this article, “Support groups in Miami”. I was pleased to see a plethora of so many options. When you participate, you can share frustrations, experiences, and successes, and have questions answered. You can learn from others about many things that can save you time and money. You can feel less isolated, lonely, and judged in this support group. You can learn about non-profit agencies that provide free therapy and Medicaid Insurance, a financial blessing. This issue

Special Needs with Raising a Child

(and all the others) of Miami Kids Magazine is a valuable resource, and major gratitude must be given to the founder and Publisher, Karla Richey. She is a visionary to provide all families with support, information, and resources throughout the year.

As parents, we want to provide the best care for our children. But it is important to be aware of the stress others place on us and ourselves. First, be cautious of misguided comments from others. For example, one might say to you: You should be punishing their bad behavior, or telling you about a friend that cured their kid’s autism, or my all-time favorite of horrible comments, “God only gives you what you can handle”. Unless you are raising a special needs child, you will not fully understand. You are doing your best to care for, love, and nurture your

special child to be like everyone else…. to be independent, happy, and healthy. Give yourself a Hug and a Hi Five!

If you have a special needs child, please acknowledge you are a Special parent and your child is blessed!

Among adults and children, produce prescription programs appeared to decrease food insecurity and improve self-reported health status.

According to the American Heart Association, people at increased risk for cardiovascular disease who participated in produce prescription programs increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables, which was associated with improved body mass index (BMI), blood sugar and blood pressure levels, as well as a decrease in food insecurity. This new research was published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, a peer-reviewed AHA journal.

Produce prescription programs enable doctors to prescribe fruits and vegetables in addition to medications. Patients receive electronic cards or vouchers to access free or discounted produce of their choice at retail grocery, explained study lead author Kurt Hager, Ph.D., M.S., an instructor at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Participants attended nutrition classes. At the beginning and after completing the program — which ranged from 4 to 10 months— participants completed questionnaires about fruit and vegetable consumption, food insecurity and health status. Routine testing of blood pressure; weight and height; and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) -a measure of blood sugar - was completed at enrollment and at the conclusion of the program.

The analysis of all participants found:

• Adults reported that their intake of fruits and vegetables increased by nearly one cup per day (0.85 cups per day). Among children, intake of fruits and vegetables increased by about a quarter of a cup per

day (0.26 cups per day).

• Systolic blood pressure — blood pressure during heartbeats — decreased more than 8 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg); while diastolic blood pressure — blood pressure between heartbeats — decreased nearly 5 mm Hg among adults who had high blood pressure at enrollment in the study.

• Blood sugar, as measured by HbA1C levels, decreased by 0.29 to 0.58 percentage points among adults with diabetes.

• BMI significantly improved, with a reduction of 0.52 kilograms per square meter (kg/m2) among adults with obesity. Among children, however, BMI did not change.

• Adults were 62% more likely and children were more than twice as likely to report better health status by program completion.

• Overall, participants were one-third less likely to report food insecurity after completing the programs compared to before the programs.

“Poor nutrition and nutrition insecurity are major drivers of chronic disease globally, including cardiometabolic conditions like Type 2 diabetes and their cardiovascular consequences, including heart failure, heart attack and stroke,” according to Mitchell Elkind, M.D., M.S., FAHA, chief clinical science officer of the American Heart Association and a tenured professor of neurology and epidemiology at Columbia University. “This analysis of produce prescription programs illustrates the potential of subsidized produce prescriptions to increase consumption of nutritious fruits and vegetables, reduce food insecurity and, hopefully, improve subjective and objective health measures.

A Story about Kyrie and Me

Kyrie is an 8 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy.

He does’t understand his limitations. He is smiling kid who is happy to be alive and approaches most of what I ask of him with desire to try.

Imagine that for a minute, as a parent, the doctors tell you something about your child, then you see they are mostly accurate (but

somethings don’t add up), and then your child starts to prove them wrong, through desire and action. What do you do? I think the answer is you help them. You help them live the best life as possible. That is what so many parents of special needs children are trying to do, help their child live the best life they can. That is what Katia, Kyrie’s mom is trying to do for him.

Kyrie walked into the pool that Monday. He was taller and stronger than I had imagined.

it. We, like Kyrie, can do things that are hard, and we can do things that are scary. Like anything else, with anyone else, if you want to get better at something, you must practice. Just like we, as “typical” people, we must practice the way in which we respond to kids with special needs.

Honestly, most of the time, all they need is a little love and patience from those around them. In speaking with Katia, I heard a mom on the other end of the phone. I heard a human who has ups and downs, joys and heartaches, challenges and victories. Kind of sounds like almost every other person I have interacted with.

Now, I have a challenge for you. Practice looking at humans with special needs as simply another human who has their special need out where you can see it. The Lord knows, I am not interested in letting the world see most of my issues that I have struggled with. Let us practice leading with love, kindness, and understanding. Before we judge, point fingers, and whisper… Practice helping someone, even if it is just holding the door open. Be the change you want to see in the world. Be special, just like Kyrie!!!

Kyrie could walk, manage stairs, and do it mostly all on his own. I was in shock. It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t always fun. It wasn’t always successful; however, we made it. Kyrie was able to swim and jump into pool and return to the wall.

Kyrie worked hard, you could tell it was hard for him, and maybe a little scary. In the end, he still did

I grew up in Hollywood, Florida going to Hollywood Beach and playing in the woods around Sheridan Street and 441. The neighborhood was full of kids. We walked to school together and back home again. We created our own fun. I graduated from Nova High School and went on to Nova Southeastern University (NSU). I am a real South Florida girl.

My journey into working in education began when I had two young children and needed a job that offered childcare so I could return to work. This led me to NSU’s preschool, then known as the Family Center. We loved it. I labored my way up from a teacher’s aide to a director and at the same time went to school. After obtaining my master’s degree I began teaching other educators how to teach preschool through a course called CDA (Child Development Associate).

Throughout my extensive career in preschool education, I learned many of the nuances involved in early education.

How did you start working in broadcasting, and how did KidVision come to life?

My journey into broadcasting started as I worked on a doctorate degree in Instructional Leadership with a focus on creating an online professional development tool for early childhood teachers. At the time nothing of the sort existed and I knew from experience that preschool teachers needed affordable on-going professional development. During my doctoral research, NSU asked me to join WPBT, a public television station, as a member of their Community Advisory Board. Our goal was to design educational and entertaining content for preschoolers through oneminute interstitials that aired between PBS Kids shows, covering topics like healthy habits and literacy. Our work together was a success! This partnership opened the door to KidVision PreK, the innovative online program I had dreamed of

creating. Together we set up the website and produced virtual field trips, for which I wrote lesson plans, student assessments, and take-home pages. We set up the KidVision Teachers Association so teachers could earn credits. We went online in July of 2007 with 4 field trip learning units. To date, we have 100 Virtual Field Trip Learning Units, in English and Spanish, with over 80,000 registered users and a strong following on social media.

What is the KidVision Teachers Association?

The KidVision Teachers Association is the reason for KidVision PreK. It is for early childhood educators to earn in-service hours and CEUs (Continuing Education Units) as required by the state and nationally to keep up their preschool teaching certification. We are partnered with FACCM (Florida Association of Child Care Management) to provide the training certification. As a member, which is $40.00 per school year, a teacher can earn certified credits, belong to a professional early childhood organization, and enjoy various other perks. The association is helpful for early childhood educators in all settings.

What kind of educational programs do you offer for children with special needs?

One of the perks of KidVision PreK is that it is free, so it meets many preschool teachers and parents needs. It is unique as all the materials such as virtual field trips, lesson plans, assessments, and take-home pages are available online at the convenience of the user. These virtual field trips and materials can be used in any setting and can be modified to suit the student’s best interest. The KidVision PreK virtual materials are friendly and developmentally appropriate for children of varying developmental stages. Our goal is to meet every child where they are to help prepare them for kindergarten. Please leave a final message to all parents reading this article. KidVision is the umbrella for all children’s programming produced by South Florida PBS. We are trusted and committed to children’s education with entertaining and

Miami Kids Magazine Back to School Event

On August 5th, we celebrated our annual Back to School event at Shops at Sunset Place. We offered free eye vision tests and glasses when prescribed, thanks to the Florida Heiken Vision Program.
