LET’S GO to

Check out these helpful hints to avoid a last-minute crunch and rush:

• Research the school website for calendar, holidays, after-school activities, and clubs.

• If possible, visit the school, to become familiar with driving directions and school layout.

• Request a class list if available, to possibly organize a carpool.

• Sign up to be a class volunteer and PTA membership.

• Purchase uniforms before the last-minute rush.

• Make appointments for Dentists and Doctors.

• Hair appointment (allow time to grow out if your kid hates the cut).

• Adjust bedtime to school hours.

• Complete summer reading assignments.

• Purchase school supplies and the special backpack.

I would sit down with your children to ask what they liked best about school last year. Discuss possible solutions to problems they experienced (too much homework doesn’t count!). Ask what they liked best (recess or lunch doesn’t count). It is important to have clear guidelines and rules about computer use and internet access. I caught my grandson doing homework with Alexa providing all the math answers!

Children are being given a cell phone at younger and younger ages. It is convenient to communicate with them.

Everyone needs to know the school rules about usage during the day to avoid it being confiscated. Upload the tracking app and notify them that you will be checking it. It is important to stress that you love them

very much and wish them to be safe. They are an expert at using cell phones, laptops, tablets & computers. (I frequently have to ask one of my grandchildren for assistance with all my devices), but they do not have the maturity to have total access to the world wide web. It is suggested to routinely do a search to see history, downloaded photos and videos, etc. Have firm consequences for disobeying the rules that you have put into place. Check out the Bark. com application for a good way to monitor your children’s devices.

Understand and remember that the first days of a new school year can be scary. Having a new teacher, new classmates, and new routines place much pressure on young children. Without doing an inquisition, gently ask how things are going. You might give an example, “Sometimes a bully picks on someone, and others laugh. Have you seen that?” Listen carefully to what they say and don’t say, stressing that you are always available to talk about anything. Tell them that a new school year is a new adventure, and you are confident they will do great.

What people eat and drink affects heart and brain health and is essential for managing health conditions like blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Hispanic adults are at higher risk for Type 2 diabetes and have some of the highest prevalence of poorly controlled blood pressure, two major risk factors for heart disease. As a champion for health equity, today the American Heart Association, the leading global voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke for all, launched ‘Together at the Table/ Juntos En La Mesa.’

The campaign is designed to inspire Hispanic/Latino communities to cook and eat a heart-healthy diet that celebrates

their cultural flavors while improving their families’ health. Food contributes to a person’s physical and mental well-being while expressing cultural identity through preparation, sharing and consumption. Together at the Table/ Juntos En La Mesa will provide tips for healthier cooking, tools and free recipes geared for family meals.

The Hispanic/Latino community is disproportionately affected by heart disease and related health issues due to longstanding systemic barriers, such as a historic lack of access to health care and nutritious foods.

VEGETABLE FRITTATA

Ingredients

• 4-6 tablespoons olive oil

• 2 cups vegetables (broccoli, mushrooms, peppers)

• 1/2 onion diced

• 1 clove garlic minced

• 6 eggs

• 1/2 cup cheese optional- cheese of your choice

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Meanwhile in a oven-safe pan, saute the onion and garlic in a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.

3. After about 3 minutes add the remaining oil and your choice of vegetables.

4. Saute the vegetables over medium heat for about 5 minutes.

5. Season the vegetables with salt and herbs (oregano & paprika). Whisk the eggs together then pour the eggs over the vegetables, making sure they spread evenly over the veggies.

7. Add the cheese if using any.

8. Now place the saute pan in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or you can continue to cook over the stove on medium low for 15-20 minutes.

HEALTHY BANANA OAT & CHOCOLATE MUFFINS

Ingredients

• 3 cups rolled oats (or old-fashioned oats)

• 2 tbsp brown sugar (light)

• ½ tsp cinnamon

• ¼ tsp salt (we use Himalayan)

• 1 tsp baking soda

• 2 large eggs

• ¼ cup honey

• 2 bananas (mashed)

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• 1 cup oat milk

• ¼ cup coconut oil (melted)

• ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

2. Grease a muffin pan with nonstick cooking spray.

3. In a large bowl combine the oats, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda.

4. In a medium bowl combine eggs, honey, mashed bananas, vanilla, oat milk, and coconut oil.

5. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir until combined, do not overmix.

6. Fold in the chocolate chips.

7. Scoop batter evenly into the prepared muffin tin.

8. Bake for 20 minutes or until set and the tops are slightly brown.

9. Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 10 minutes then remove to cool completely.

GREEN MACHINE SMOOTHIE

Ingredients

• 1 cup fresh baby spinach organic

• 2 cups frozen pineapple diced

• 2 cups frozen kiwi diced

• 1 each fresh or frozen banana

• 1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice

• 1/2 cup water or ice

• 1 tbsp honey (optional)

Instructions

1. Cut banana, kiwi, & pineapple and freeze overnight.

2. Add frozen fruit to blender. Add juice, water, then add the loosely packed Spinach and blend! Taste and add honey if needed.

of SUICIDE Prevention Month. The Power THE WORD

Suicide Prevention Month is upon us. So, I have decided to take on the task and talk about some of those things we often don’t talk about. I think the most common thing talked about when you hear about someone you think you know committed suicide, is why didn’t they reach out, why didn’t they ask for help, it seemed like they had it all together…

I am going to pull the personal curtain back a little bit and expose myself and my own struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. I can’t remember the first time I thought about taking my own life. I cannot even tell you what triggered the thought. I would guess this world seems overwhelming and all-powerful sometimes and you feel like you have no way out or no change ahead, so you make the ultimate choice can’t tell you about the first time I told someone about it, or better yet, posed it as a question. The first time I had the courage to say something was to one of my best friends, and I asked him “Have you ever

thought about killing yourself?” He came back so fast with a no, it had the tone of what is wrong with you, that’s not even a thing. The second person I asked was my girlfriend and she had a similar response to my friend. I was left feeling like I was crazy. I am lucky though, because my thought that suicide is the ultimate cop-out, is the only reason I am still here. Seriously. Suicide happens to be a “must not do,” zero exceptions, in my mind. Thank God.

I am not suggesting we normalize suicide; however, I am suggesting we normalize those thoughts that aren’t sure about tomorrow. Those people who sometimes don’t think they can make it another day, month, year, or some circumstance. As in, “I cannot do that again.” We need to have compassion for those who cannot have compassion for themselves.

How can you help? This is the million-dollar question, isn’t it? I would suggest it’s easier than you think. You can tell them you love them, in many different ways. You can remind them the world is better with them in it.

How do you know who is feeling like this? I would encourage you to think everyone does; therefore, you will try to help and show love to anyone in your path. We have no idea where someone just came from or where they’re headed too, but when they cross our path, friend or stranger, we can show them, love. The catch is twofold, one, it must be real and unconditional, and two, you have to be ok with knowing you’ll never know whose life you saved because of that love. The world needs more compassion and love, so why not start with you, today? Start in your own home too, because you never really know what is going on in anyone’s head except your own.

It takes work. It takes a village. It takes faith. It takes consistent movement forward. It is hard. It is scary… AND,

A 17-foot-long dragon with a wingspan of over 19 feet guards the lobby of the HistoryMiami Museum in downtown. The dragon has flown in for the museum’s newest e xhibition Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids , now on view until March 31, 2024.

As you make your way around the exhibition, you can step next to the giant tentacles of a Kraken, a mythical sea monster that has 12-foot-long tentacles that appear to rise out of the floor as if surfacing from the sea or view a manatee model and learn the story of how sailors mistook them for mermaids. You will also come face to face with an over6-foot-tall, extinct primate called Gigantopithecus; and the largest bird ever to have lived the over-9foot-tall, extinct Aepyornis. A talon swooping above the heads of visitors with a wingspan of nearly 20 feet makes this a magical experience not to be missed.

Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, & Mermaids also include paintings, textiles, and other cultural objects from around the world. The exhibit brings to light surprising similarities and differences in how people worldwide have been inspired by nature to envision and depict these strange and wonderful creatures.

For example, discover how the elongated spiral tooth of the narwhal, a small whale living in arctic waters, lent credence to Europeans’ centuries-old belief in the unicorn. Then, stand next to a life-sized unicorn standing over 10 feet tall.

The exhibit also offers many interactive stations where visitors can build their own virtual dragon, touch casts of the lower jaw of the Gigantopithecus, and feel a life-size reproduction of the talon of a Haast’s eagle.

In a special Mythic Miami section, learn about the Skunk Ape, an elusive creature believed to inhabit the mangroves and forests of South Florida, hear the story of a local man who came face to face with a siren in Haiti, and learn the legend of the Chupacabra.

The fantastical exhibition is located in the South Building of the HistoryMiami Museum in downtown Miami. There is onsite parking in the Cultural Center Parking garage located on Second Avenue. It is $5 with validation.

Sabina, tell our readers about your upbringing, family, and formal education.

I was born in Medellin, Colombia, and raised between Cartagena, Colombia, Barcelona, Spain, and Miami. I spent most of my summers here until moving full-time at 18 to go to Florida International University. My mom’s parents are immigrants from Syria and Lebanon, and my father’s family is originally from northern Spain. Miami has always been what I considered my true home.

I am a proud journalist and received my degree in the field from Florida International University. I am working towards completing my master’s in political science from the University of West Florida right now. I received my early education at a British international elementary, middle, and high school. So it has been quite a diverse journey! Such as the great melting pot that we call Miami. My father is a dermatologist, and my mother is a teacher and librarian who now works as the CFO of my communications agency.

I have been awarded a scholarship from Gabriel Garcia Foundation and am a published writer. I worked in TV for the past 22 years as a news reporter and anchor specializing in politics covering events at the local, state, and federal levels, including the past three presidential cycles.

How has your experience been as a Miami City Commissioner since you have been elected?

It’s been wonderful. It comes to me naturally. You need to be strong, have great communication skills, be able to negotiate, and put your constituents first. We have a wonderful District 2 team of professionals to serve everyone. We put

our residents first with weekly open office hours on Wednesdays and mobile offices in each neighborhood. We also have our Ecological, or Eco, Squad beautifying our community and reporting issues such as flooding. In my first three months as a commissioner, I am proud of several legislative accomplishments, such as

focuses on projects in Latin America. Meanwhile, my skincare line sells a series of all-natural oils and other products to promote health and wellness when it comes to our skin. The sky’s the limit if we find ways to balance family and our wishes and desires as a woman.

How does it feel being a woman of Colombian heritage and having this important role in our community?

What message would you like to share with all the mothers and parents in general reading this article?

Colombian American women are strong, determined, and resilient. Being the first Colombian American to have been elected to a City of Miami position is both a great responsibility and an honor at the same time. I wish I could inspire so many more to come and be part of our politics. My three children are engaged with what mom and dad do. That said, they always go first but also understand that their parents need to be happy and productive for them to be raised healthily.

Pedro, 14, will be training soccer; he is a great goalkeeper and starting his high school career at Mast Academy this fall. I am so proud of him and know he will continue to make me proud like all my children. Paulo, 10, loves politics, sports, and movies and is entering his 5th-grade year at Coconut Grove Elementary. They were visiting grandparents in Colombia this summer and are back, excited to start the next chapter in their education. Carmen, 2, will start school for the first time. She is an active toddler! The city of Miami offers summer camps, and our office is collaborating to make sure they are in great shape. I am so pleased to be blessed with three wonderful children and appreciate the chance to share my story and family with our community as I strive to be the best public servant I can.

These are just some of the ways that Cortical Visual Impairment or CVI, the number one cause of pediatric visual impairment, can manifest in your child’s daily routine.

At Miami Lighthouse’s CVI Collaborative Center we are focusing on early diagnosis and early intervention for families with children with CVI for one critical reason: neuroplasticity. CVI is a brain-based visual impairment, caused by damage to the brain’s visual processing pathways before or during birth; CVI can also be acquired later in childhood, caused by head trauma or neardrowning incidents. Over70% of children with cerebral palsy (CP) also have CVI.

According to the National Eye Institute (NEI, 2020) the most common causes of CVI include:

• Lack of oxygen or blood supply to the brain — often because of a stroke

• Hydrocephalus (when fluid builds up in the brain)

• Infections that reach the brain

• Head injury

• Certain genetic conditions

With appropriate assessment and CVIspecific adaptations to learning, functional vision in children with CVI is expected to improve. For more information regarding your

American Heart Association: Go Red for Women luncheon

More than 200 people decked out from head to toe in red gathered on Thursday May 25th at South Florida’s annual Go Red for Women Luncheon to raise awareness and help fund the fight against heart disease and stroke, which claim the lives of more women than all forms of cancer combined.

Miami Kids Magazine received significant recognition.

On May 25th Karla Richey, our magazine’s publisher, received a proclamation at Miami City Hall in recognition for an outstanding job with Miami Kids Magazine.
