ABSTRACT This paper is based on an analysis of Irish as the target language of pupils in immersion settings, at that stage when they have transferred from primary to post-primary education. International research shows that the receptive language skills of immersion education pupils are stronger than their productive language skills. Writing and speaking in the target language were chosen as the focus for this project. Eighty post-primary pupils from Year Eight in Northern Ireland schools participated in the study and the paper explores learning for Irish-medium primary and post primary teachers.
