ACHOIMRE Díríonn an páipéar ar mheonta tuairiscithe agus maíte múinteoirí Gaeilge i leith ról agus fheidhm an Bhéarla sa rang Gaeilge i meánscoileanna Béarla. Léiríonn na torthaí go n-úsáideann múinteoirí an Béarla mar uirlis oideolaíochta, nó mar uirlis mheasúnaithe, chun ranganna a bhainistiú agus chun idirghníomhú le daltaí. Nochtann na múinteoirí cúiseanna foghlaimeoir-lárnacha maidir le húsáid an Bhéarla sa rang Gaeilge amhail cumas na ndaltaí, tuiscint, leibhéal agus cumas teanga, inspreagadh, rannpháirtíocht, meon i leith na Gaeilge, suim sa Ghaeilge agus spraoi. Cuireann múinteoirí suntas ar leith i dtionchar an ullmhúcháin do scrúduithe, éiteas na scoile agus comhthéacs na scoile ar a roghanna teanga sa rang. ABSTRACT This paper focuses on English-medium secondary school Irish language teachers’ reported and stated beliefs about the role and function of English in the Irish classroom. The results indicate that teachers used English as a pedagogical tool, an assessment device, to manage classrooms and to interact with students. These results were dominated by student-centred justifications for using English in the Irish classroom such as the students’ ability, comprehension, language level, language competence, motivation, engagement, attitude to Irish, interest in Irish and enjoyment. Additionally, teachers noted the influence of examination preparation, the school’s ethos and the school’s context on their language choices.
