AVING LIVED IN THE PEMBROKE PINES/MIRAMAR AREA FOR 23 years we clearly remember when Silver Lakes was the only community around and the closest Supermarket was the Publix on Flamingo and Pines. We have been thrilled and lucky to watch this town flourish into a well known and cherished community. Our cover this month places the focus on Miramar, a well-governed city with a beautiful City Hall and many cultural activities. We are also proud to feature a message from Mayor Ortis on page 24. He is a strong and hands-on Mayor who has helped make Pembroke Pines into the second most popular city to live in in Florida. We are locals and we believe in building a strong local business community... that is our motto. We are very proud of our magazine, from the graphics, editors and sales force to our outstanding management group. The love and effort we all put into each issue shows in every aspect and we hope you feel it as you flip through the pages. Thank you for supporting us.

The Pembroke Pines Utilities Office and Public Service Complex has moved into a new 27,000 square foot space at 8300 South Palm Drive. Divisions including Utility Customer Service (i.e. opening of new utility accounts, payment of utility bills and the resolving of customer service issues), Engineering/Environmental Services; Procurement/Purchasing; and Public Works and Facilities Maintenance will now reside in the newly renovated space. Visit ppines.com for more information.

Pembroke Pines is looking to expand their reach via a volunteer committee that would advise the City Commission on social media. The committee, proposed by Commissioner Angelo Castillo in November, would be comprised of one person from each voting district, meeting monthly before sharing the ideas with city commissioners. The city currently broadcasts commission meetings online (as well as keeping them archived on the website), but is looking to create more immediate “real time” interaction with the community at large.

MOVING ON Miramar Police Chief Raymond Black will retire this month after a 30-year career with the Miramar police department. A graduate of the Broward County Police Academy, Chief Black oversaw more than 250 officers within the city and was instrumental in orchestrating the $23 million police headquarters that broke ground last December.

TOP RANK Broward College’s Melinda Shoemaker has taken the top spot on RateMyProfessors.com annual “Highest Rated Junior and Community College Professors” list for the 2014-2015 academic year. The Bocabased psychotherapist and psychologist is currently an associate professor of behavioral science at the college’s North Campus in Coconut Creek. This is Shoemaker’s fifth time on the list and saw her beat out more than 1 million professors in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.

Holiday Celebrations Draw Community Support BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

N

OT ONE, BUT TWO HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS DREW THOUSANDS of Pines residents this holiday season… including Santa Claus. At the City of Pembroke Pines Glass Gallery hundreds came out to see more than 200 original pieces of art created by Pembroke Pines school children as well as students at the Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts classes. In addition to perusing the art, guests enjoyed refreshments, singing and dancing, gifts from Santa and an only-in-Florida snowstorm. Art teachers were presented with certificates of appreciation for their assistance in guiding the children to develop art around the theme “How Do You Celebrate the Holidays?” using paint, crayons, feathers, macaroni and chalk. “This was a fantastic event, the children were so happy to be recognized for their art work,” said Holly Bonkowsi, cultural arts coordinator for the city. “The Holiday Art Exhibit is the perfect time for each of us to stop, take a breath and see the holiday through the eyes of children, as we celebrate our city’s talented [young residents].”

Over at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, thousands of Pines residents enjoyed the annual Holiday Open House, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Community Services Department. Guests got a special visit from Santa Claus and enjoyed a magic show by Gary Midnight and entertainment from the Rising Starz Music Academy. The Center was transformed into a winter wonderland via a snow-covered log cabin, 28 Christmas trees decorated in different themes and holiday displays including a menorah and a nativity scene. Guests sipped on hot chocolate and ate ate cookies while posting for photos and partaking in holiday-themed face painting. “Santa was very busy all night long, giving gifts to children with help from Lady Pines,” said the Center’s Activities Coordinator Suzy Felix. For information about the daytime and evening classes, services, events or rental opportunities at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center please call 954-4506888 and ask for the activities desk or visit www.ppines.com , click on Departments and select Community Services.

Broward College Kicks Off Speaker Series BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

B

ROWARD COLLEGE KICKED OFF THE 2016 season of their Speaker Series in November with a visit from soccer superstar Carli Lloyd. The event, hosted by Broward College President J. David Armstrong, saw Lloyd participate in a public question and answer session, but the 2015 “U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year” did more than just inspire ticket holders. Prior to the actual Q&A, Lloyd spoke with the college’s women’s and men’s soccer teams and attended a Seahawks’ practice. She also spent time with youth players, students and faculty members reminding them to “Keep your foot on the pedal.” Lloyd’s esteemed career made her an inspiring guest for the teams. The 33-year-old scored 18 goals in 2015 (six in the Women’s World Cup), won a World Cup title and became the first woman to score three goals in a World Cup final. Her ties to the area also brought excitement for the teams—Lloyd was recruited out of high school by Broward College women’s soccer coach Michael Goodrich when he worked at Nova Southeastern.

Lloyd, however, is just the first of four distinguished speakers to share “exciting experiences, insights, points of view and behind the scenes stories on some of the most current topics of the day,” according to Speaker Series organizers. January 13 brings CBS Sunday Morning Correspondent, Contributor to NPR’s “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” and Host of the Cooking Channel’s “My Grandmother’s Ravioli” Mo Rocca to the Amaturo theater followed by former Congressman, former Chairman of the House Republican Conference and Oklahoma Sooners legend J.C. Watts on March 23. Wrapping up the series is political strategist and CNN, NBC, & FOX News political commentator James Carville on April 6.

Pembroke Pines Band Students Hit High Notes BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

T

HREE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS and a band director for The City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System have been selected to perform at the 2016 Florida Music Educators Conference held in Tampa in January. “This is the first time in the history of our campus band program to have not just one, but two students selected into this prestigious band,” said Edith “Edie” Shendell-Frankel, Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School Central Campus band director who, along with parents, will accompany the students on the Eighth graders - Dante Harrison (Tuba) trip. The students (oboist Nicholas Pizzo and tuba and Nicholas Pizzo (Oboe) were selected the Florida 7th & 8th All State Band player Dante Harrison) will join 126 band students for representing Pembroke Pines Charter from around the state as they perform in the 7th Middle School Central Campus. and th grade All-State Band under the direction of a Polk County conductor. “Our talented Ms. Shendell-Frankel is to be commended for her efforts,” said Sean Chance, principal of the Pembroke Pines Charter School Central Campus.”She works with our students to prepare them to be successful in the instrument of their choice. Her dedicated efforts are showing additional dividends… our students have achieved a great accomplishment.” In addition to Nicholas and Dante, Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus eighth grader Lauren Fader was chosen to play french horn in the Florida 7th and 8th Grade Honor Band and Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West

Eighth grader - Lauren Fadel, (French Horn) was selected for the Florida 7th & 8th All State Honor Band representing the Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus. Dayna Cole, Band Director at Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus, was selected Conductor of the 2016 All State Middle School Honor Band. Each Band is comprised of 128 students and 1 conductor.

Campus Band Director Dayna Cole will represent the school conducting the band. The Florida Bandmasters Association’s Clinics Committee selects conductors for the All State Bands several years in advance, with Cole’s invitation coming more than two and a half years ago. “Her work at PPCMS and the outstanding performance of her bands over the past 17 years is what has brought her this prestigious honor,” said Michael Castellano, Pembroke Pines Middle School West Campus principal. In addition to conducting this year’s Honor Band, Mrs. Cole serves the Florida Bandmasters Association as the Junior High/Middle School Representative on the FBA Executive Board. Cole grew up in Broward County and played the flute at Lauderhill Middle School and Piper High School before attending both the University

of Miami and Florida State University. Over the years the West Campus has had five students in the All State Band and seven students selected to the Honor Band. Students from the Central and West Campuses have achieved additional recognition when they were selected to perform at the Senior High School All State Ensembles. “This honor is especially significant when you consider just 128 band students and one band director from around the State of Florida are selected for each band,” said Castellano.

In Our Schools KINDERGARTEN PHILANTHROPISTS Kindergarten students at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School FSU Campus spent the days before winter break collecting and packing holiday care packages for American soldiers serving overseas. Enlisting the help of the entire school, the Kindergarten classes were able to create fourteen packages containing one hundred sixty holiday stockings that are currently en route to the soldiers. “The holiday season is here and many of our friends and family are continuing the fight for our freedom,” said Kindergarten teacher Kimberly Caballero, M.Ed., who created the initiative in 2014. “This project instills appreciation for service in our students and is a tangible reminder to our soldiers that the Pembroke Pines Charter School FSU Campus appreciates them and thanks them for their service. Just before the holidays four members of the military visited our students and expressed appreciation on behalf of all soldiers overseas for the care packages.”

B TRUE 2 U More than 1,400 middle school students will head to the Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School Maverick Theatre next month to witness “B True 2 U,” a one hour, one-act community service play which dramatizes seemingly comedic real life situations while sending far reaching, profound, sad and touching messages about the daily challenges teens face. “Ideally, back in the middle school, classroom teacher-guided discussions will help students discuss and work to modify hurtful behaviors,” said Cindy Keegan, Archbishop McCarthy artistic director and award-winning author. Many of the skits are written by students and cover relatable teenage issues including sexting, making good choices, body image, drugs, bullying, technology and more. This is the eleventh year Archbishop McCarthy has invited middle school students to its Community Service play.

OUTSTANDING STUDENTS Four students from Pembroke Pines Charter High School have received prestigious awards from Cambridge International Examinations to acknowledge their outstanding performance in the June 2015 Cambridge examination series. PPCHS students who earned top honors were Allen Altenor (Top in World: AS General Paper); Arria Hauldin (Top in World: AS General Paper); Sarah Duval (Cambridge Scholar Awards for AS Level); and Uzair Farid (Cambridge Scholar Awards for AS Level). “The award recognized the talent and dedication of our students and staff,” said Peter Bayer, principal of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School. “We are very pleased our students scored so well in a testing program new to our school.”

RightRIGHT Here in HERE MiramarIN IT’S

MIRAMAR U

NIQUELY SITUATED BETWEEN MIAMI AND FORT LAUDERDALE AND POSITIONED AT THE crossroads of one of the world’s premier centers of trade and commerce, Miramar is a gateway to southeast Florida, the Caribbean, Latin America and beyond. In addition to its 60th anniversary, 2015 marked the groundbreaking on more than a few major projects designed to improve city offerings and offer new and exciting opportunities for the South Florida community. Here’s a look at four of them:

MIRAMAR POLICE HEADQUARTERS

THE MIRAMAR AMPHITHEATER AT REGIONAL PARK

The Department of Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Department of Construction & Facilities Management, officially marked the groundbreaking of The Miramar Amphitheater at Regional Park, Wednesday, December 9, kicking off construction on the newest South Florida facility to host entertainment, sporting and cultural events. Slated for completion in early 2017, the amphitheater will feature a permanent stage and canopy cover, with a total folding seat capacity of 3,000 under cover and an additional uncovered 1,144 folding seat area. The venue marks the first construction project in Miramar green-lighted to attract tourists, corporations, promoters and organizations to visit Miramar and bring their businesses—and tourist dollars--to the City of Beauty and Progress. Once completed, The Miramar Amphitheater at Regional Park will be set to host events such as live music concerts, corporate retreats, art and book fairs, festivals, fundraising/ charity events, outdoor plays. “I am excited for our families and visitors to have a first-class and unique venue for cultural entertainment and experiences. It’s a new day in Miramar and our residents are excited about this project,” said Mayor Wayne Messam.

Scheduled for completion in late spring, the new Miramar Police Headquarters will feature 65,000 square feet in three stories accommodating various operational functions including the Command Center, Patrol Division, Special Operations, Records and Internal Affairs. The new headquarters is several years in the making and broke ground in December of 2014. The mixed-use space will also house first-floor retail shops and restaurants. “Conveniently colocated at the city’s town center, this facility will serve the interests of our community and support the daily operations of our police department for many generations,” said former Police Chief Raymond Black. In keeping with environmental concerns and costs, the MPD building will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

EAST WATER PLANT RENOVATION

At the November 23 Miramar Commission meeting, the Board approved renovations on the East Water Treatment Plant. The project, headed up by Wharton-Smith, Inc. will take about 12 months to design with two years of renovations and will move forward without interruption to resident or business services. The plant was originally built in the 1950s and has undergone a series of renovations in recent years. It provides potable water treatment at a rated 6.0 million gallons per day (MGD) capacity. “6 million MGD capacity is significant to the City,” said Hong Guo, Utilities Director at the plant. “It prepares Miramar with the ability to account for redundancies in operations as well as be ready for all opportunities or ideas that advance on redevelopment and or growth,” added Guo.

ADULT DAY CARE

ity areas, classrooms and a dining room with warming kitchen, the new Adult Day Care center broke ground in late November and is scheduled to open later this year. It will make the City of Miramar one of only four focal points in Broward County providing a full spectrum of Social Services programs and services and is a result of the city’s recognition that residents would benefit from a new alternative for families and caregivers seeking specialized care for their loved ones during the day. “The facility enables us to provide the much needed continuum of care which will allow our residents the ability to age in place with the dignity and respect they deserve,” says Marva Ricketts, Director of Social Services.

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS

In addition to the four above, the City is in the process of upgrading and building spaces across Miramar. A new 24,000 square foot Public Safety Complex will include a variety of key public safety functions including the Historic District Police Substation, Crime Lab and Evidence Storage, Logistics and Utility Storage at one central location. Streetscape improvements such as lighting, crosswalks, landscaping, pavers and drainage as well as improvement of the facades of the eastern and western ends of the commercial center located at the NE corner of SW 69th Ave. and Miramar Parkway are some of the proposed ideas in the Historic Downtown Revitalization project scheduled to break ground in February 2017. Harbour Lake Park (scheduled for completion this May) will offer open space, landscaping, walkways, parking and lighting. For more information, please call (954) 602-4357. You can visit City Hall at 2300 Civic Center Place, Miramar, FL 33025. Also, please visit www.MiramarFL.gov.

APPY NEW YEAR! It’s always exciting to start a new year with hope, resolutions and the knowledge that changes are inevitable, but can be exhilarating. This is an election year, both for our city and our country so change is in the air. I have hope that this will be a year of positive growth and change. I encourage everyone to vote this year and to make your voices heard, so this year and those in our future are the best they can be. My annual “State of the City” address will be Wednesday, February 24, 2016, and I look forward to focusing on our city’s achievements and the challenges that we may face. Looking back at last year, we basked in many awards and acknowledgements, saw our City Center rise from a dream and we even grew as a city. Did you know that our municipal boundaries actually grew by approximately 60 acres, when the annexation of the former Broward County Women’s Correctional Institute parcel became official? I know that 2016 will be an even better year for all of us. I am happy to say that we, as a city, are communicating more effectively with all of our residents and businesses through an active website, our City Connect newspaper, OCTV and social media such as Facebook. These avenues allow us to be more in touch with our residents’ needs and provide information on a more timely basis so that we can flourish as a city and continue to achieve great things. By being connected, we open up new possibilities in our community, and social and economic development. With our City Center getting closer to completion this year, it is my hope that we bring the creativity, innovation and goodwill of all of our residents into a joint process of ensuring the greatness of Pembroke Pines. This is a perfect time to remind everyone that this month is ideal to begin sprucing up our yards to enter into the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest before the application deadline in April. The Award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident, business woman and nature-lover, who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. As part of the contest, five Pembroke Pines yards will be selected, one yard from each City Commission District and one at-large yard. Be sure to visit our website at www.ppines.com and click on the Landscape Advisory Board page to get an application and more information so you can enter. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Wishing you all a great, safe and prosperous new year! Your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

The 45-year Pembroke Pines resident and United States Navy Veteran had a special visit from more than 40 students and teachers from the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School – FSU Campus. “Our students learned that Mr. Roppo is now in hospice care and they wanted to do something special for him,” said School Counselor Olga Perez.” To let him know they were thinking about him and thank him for all he has done for our school and country.” Roppo’s connection to the FSU campus spans many years and has deep roots… his daughter is a teacher at the school. PET HEALTH

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

New Year’s Resolutions BY DR. KELLY SAPORITO

The New Year is here, and in preparation for the upcoming year, we resolve to do better. In addition to resolving to lose weight, quit smoking, and exercise more, you may consider resolving to benefit the community and your furry family members. Here are a few ideas! Have your pet spayed or neutered. Spaying females before the first heat cycle is highly protective against breast cancer in both cats and dogs. Breast cancer in cats is extremely aggressive, and likely to spread to the rest of the body. It has a 50% chance of spreading in dogs. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer, inappropriate urination, and greatly decreases the likelihood of your pet running away. Having your pet spayed or neutered not only maximizes the lifespan of your loved one, it also minimizes pet overpopulation in your community. Get your pet vaccinated. Vaccination protects your furry family member from experiencing severe disease as a result of certain viruses or bacteria, it does not prevent infection. In other words, vaccination acts to “rev up” the immune system so that if your pet comes into contact with the bacteria or viruses it has been vaccinated against, the body will recognize the problem sooner and handle it right away. By vaccinating your pet, you are actually working to reduce the survival of these diseases, and by doing that, the actual rates of infection in any given area decrease. Even if your dog or cat spends most of the time indoors, there are core vaccines that every pet needs regardless of his or her lifestyle in order to stay protected, and to protect others. Ask your veterinarian about which vaccines are required as core, and also ask him or her to explain to you what vaccines are non-core, or optional, and what lifestyles increase risk for these diseases. It is important to ask your veterinarian what vaccinations your pet is receiving so you know they are receiving only the vaccines they need. Use monthly heartworm and intestinal parasite preventatives. Monthly heartworm prevention not only prevents deadly heartworm disease that is transmitted by mosquitos, most also prevent against intestinal parasites too. Many dog and cat owners are unaware of the fact that intestinal worms and other parasites are transmitted in the soil wherever other dogs, cats, and even wildlife roam. It doesn’t matter if you have your yard sprayed, this doesn’t prevent transmission. Additionally, intestinal parasites are the most common zoonotic disease that I see. Zoonotic means transmissible from animals to humans, and the humans most at risk are children. By keeping your dog or cat on monthly preventatives, you are protecting your pet and the community. You are reducing the reservoir which decreases overall incidence of these diseases in the community, including the wildlife population. Ask your veterinarian for more details on which products achieve these goals. So this New Year, as you resolve to improve your life, also think to include resolving to improve the lives of the pets in your home, and give back to your community as well! HEALTH & WELLNESS

The ThermiVa Solution BY ADRIANA GOMEZ

I

N ORDER FOR AG SKINCARE TO INTRODUCE YOU to ThermiVa, we want you to first ask yourself the following questions: »» Do you feel “loose” vaginally since childbirth and/or menopause? »» Do you feel dry during intercourse? »» Do you have trouble reaching orgasm? »» Do you occasionally dribble or leak when you sneeze, cough or exercise? »» Have you ever “not quite made it” to the bathroom on time? »» Have your intimate relationships suffered due to these changes? »» Are you experiencing loss of self-confidence? Loss of interest in sex? Loss of desire? If you answered yes to most of the questions above, then ThermiVa may be for you. Vaginal delivery and menopause should not cost you your sexual health and well-being. Excessive stretching of the vaginal muscles is a common occurrence after vaginal birth or due to aging. Damage can diminish sensation during sexual activity, reduce satisfaction and change the relationship between partners. By choosing to restore your feminine wellness with Thermiva at AG Skincare you don’t have to trade motherhood for sexuality; you can be Mommy and Sexy at the same time. You don’t have to trade the years in your life for the life in your years and you can be over 50 and sexy at the same time. And while it may not be a commonly talked about issue, it’s one that resonated with millions of women around the

world. So start talking to someone who can do something about it. ThermiVa treatments use radio frequency energy to gently heat tissue to reclaim, restore and revive feminine wellness, without discomfort or downtime. ThermiVa uses a special wand applicator which may be applied externally to labia and vulval tissues to restore normal tissue tone and function. The specially designed hand piece may also deliver radiofrequency energy inside the vagina to revive atrophic tissue and other structures.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

»» No surgery »» No downtime »» No anesthesia »» Comfortable, in-office treatments »» Three 30 minute sessions, one month apart »» May resume sexual relations same day/night »» Noticeable improvement after 1st or 2nd session »» Long lasting results
