There really is no story’s end yet, and Little Feat have indeed led a storied life ever since they formed in 1969. As American as apple pie--and rock ‘n roll itself--Feat’s music transcends boundaries, a freewheeling fusion of California rock and Dixie-inflected funk-boogie. In the mix as well are strains of folk, blues, rockabilly, country and jazz, inventing a hybrid sound that is truly Little Feat’s own. charlesfdodgecitycenter.com

The 21st Annual ArtFest in the Pines will take place this year on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. ArtFest in the Pines is a juried art festival showcasing a wide array of fine arts in such mediums as Drawing, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Digital Art, Painting, Fine Handcrafts, Photography, Wood, Glass and Three-Dimensional Sculpture. Cash prizes are awarded to artists in the various categories and for “best in show.” In addition to the art exhibits, ArtFest offers fun for all ages including live hands-on art demonstrations, pop-up art on the plaza, a student art competition, a farmer’s market, a kids’ art and game zone, children and adult workshops at The Frank Art Gallery and in the lobby of the Great Hall, and more. “This truly is a spectacular event that grows with each new year,” said Holly Bonkowski, Division Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. “We continue to encourage artists to be a part of our 21st Annual ArtFest by applying online, and we hope to see everyone come out for this must-attend event.” There is still time for artists to claim a spot in this year’s ArtFest by applying at www. ppines.com/artfest. One of the highlights of ArtFest is always the poster contest. This year’s winner is Artist Tamara Seymour, whose work “Jezebel,” will be featured on this year’s poster and the cover of the ArtFest booklet. Seymour will also be at ArtFest in person to meet everyone and share her love for art. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to purchase the limited-edition poster of “Jezebel.” For the second year, students are also getting the chance to participate in their own art competition on Saturday, March 9, at 1 p.m. This competition is open to students who reside or go to school in Pembroke Pines. Students in grades K-12 are eligible to apply. Students are judged on their artistic expression and creativity. Winners in each grade level will be announced and receive a ribbon and gift card as follows: 1st place: $100 gift card, 2nd place: $50 gift card, 3rd place: $25 gift card. Collages, Drawings, Paintings, Photography, Sculptures or a combination of mediums are accepted. Following the awards presentation, participants are invited to a free ice cream celebration. ANY MAINSTREAM AMERICAN GROCERY STORES AND CHAINS NOW HAVE BULK SECTIONS FOR DRIED foods like nuts and spices, though most everything else still comes sealed in plastic, cardboard, aluminum or glass, which customers then recycle or discard once they devour the contents. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that containers and packaging make up almost a quarter of all landfill waste, with the average American generating four pounds of trash a day, most of it food-related. Furthermore, Americans throw out about a third of the food we buy, largely because we’re forced to buy more than we need due to the way food is pre-packaged for sale. One solution to both of these problems is the “zero-waste” grocery store which sells in bulk (or “loose”) to customers who bring their own containers and shopping bags and fill them up with just the amount of food they will eat. Besides the obvious environmental benefits of reducing the stream of waste to landfills and energy-intensive recycling processors, zero-waste grocery stores also tend to be easier on the wallet—given that can indulge in some zero waste shopping for groceries packaging adds upwards of Brooklynites at Precycle in Bushwick. Don’t forget your own containers! 40 percent to the cost of many everyday food items. Zero-waste food stores began turning up in Europe in just the last 15 years. The success of stores like Germany’s Original Unverpackt, France’s Day By Day, Denmark’s LØS Market and the UK’s Bulk Market and Earth.Food.Love shows a strong proclivity, at least in Europe, for a green grocery experience. Zero waste markets are a harder sell in the U.S., but that hasn’t stopped a few entrepreneurs from trying. The nation’s first zero waste grocery store, In.gredients in Austin, Texas, opened with fanfare in 2012 but had trouble competing with a nearby traditional grocery store—and finally shut its doors for good in April 2018. “We realized…we weren’t changing shoppers’ habits,” Erica Howard Cormier, In.gredients’ former GM, told CNBC. “You have to plan a lot to go to the grocery store with your own containers, and people would go to the store across the street because they forgot their container.” Nevertheless, others have ventured forth undaunted. Some of the biggest are Precycle and the Filling Station in New York City, Dill Pickle Co-op in Chicago, Simply Bulk Market and Zero Market in Colorado, the Refill Shoppe near Los Angeles, People’s Food Co-op in Portland, OR and Central Co-op in Seattle. And in Vancouver, BC is Nada, one of the biggest and most successful zero waste markets in the world. The store claims to have diverted some 30,500 containers from landfills since opening in 2014. A search on the Litterless.com’s “Zero Waste Grocery Guide” turns up dozens of zero waste grocery options in most major U.S. metropolitan areas, even if some are smaller specialty stores or just sections in traditional markets. So grab a few tupperwares and that old college reunion tote bag and get shopping! Lottery Registration Under Way at Somerset Academy ARTS CONSERVATORY AUDITIONS START THIS MONTH
T
HERE IS STILL TIME TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2019-20 LOTTERY registration at Somerset Academy Charter School in Pembroke Pines, one of Broward County’s premier charter schools. Those interested in attending Somerset Academy’s elementary, middle, or high school must apply online by March 29 at www.somersetacademy.com. While the charter school is tuition-free, students are admitted through a lottery system. In addition, the highly ranked Somerset Arts Conservatory High School, which focuses on dance, music, theater, and visual arts, is currently taking applications and scheduling auditions. Applications must be completed by Friday, February 22. Auditions are scheduled on Saturday, February 23, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. for dance; Saturday, March 2, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. for art, theater, and music; and Friday, March 22, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. “Our high school and arts conservatory are ranked among the top high schools in Florida so you don’t want to miss the opportunity to claim your spot,” said Walkiria Soberon, Vice Principal at Somerset Academy. In the U.S. News Best High Schools 2018 rankings, Somerset Arts Conservatory, ranked 22 among high schools in Florida and 218th nationally. It was also designated as a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School and boasts a 100 percent graduation rate. Somerset Academy Charter High School ranked 80 in Florida, 966th nationally, and also boasts a 100 percent graduation rate. Both the high school and arts conservatory are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). “We are delighted at the achievements our school has attained. We pride ourselves in offering our students a rigorous curriculum which inspires future leaders, a love for learning, and life-long success,” said Somerset Academy Principal Bernardo Montero. “We dedicate

our efforts in providing a safe learning environment that fosters a connection between our students, parents, staff, and community.” At the Somerset Arts Conservatory, students get a one-of-a-kind conservatory style education that helps them develop critical thinking skills in both theory and practice in the visual and performing arts. The marching band, dance program, and theater students consistently compete and are recognized at local, state, and national levels. One student, Julian Scott, recently earned an $80,000 scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Many others go on to pursue education and careers in the arts. “The Somerset Arts Conservatory program prepared me to grow my experience as a dancer,” said Arielle Disciascio, who graduated in 2016. “I am forever thankful for the training gained from Mrs. Swogger and the Somerset Arts Conservatory Dance Program, from the audition process to the many dress rehearsals. I can say that many experiences and learnings from the program are now applicable to my everyday life as a dancer trying to find her way in New York City.” Both Somerset Arts Conservatory and Somerset High School are participants in the prestigious Cambridge International Programme, which allows students to take
advanced level courses and earn college credit much like AP courses. Somerset Academy High School also offers 45 clubs and Honor Societies, as well as numerous Junior Varsity and Varsity athletics. Students in grades 9-12 follow a college preparatory curriculum and are required to meet all the requirements for a standard Florida diploma. In addition to an extensive list of challenging Advanced Placement (AP) courses, students can take advantage of a variety of unique programs and course tracks. The school participates in the national “Project Lead the Way” program, which provides transformational learning experiences by creating an engaging, hands-on classroom environment that empowers students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills they will need to thrive in today’s job market. Among the Project Lead the Way courses offered are AP Computer Science, Coding, Medical Detectives, and Principles of Biomedical Sciences. Somerset Academy also offers several Industry Certification courses in the areas of emergency medicine, early childhood education, TV production, business, and digital art. For more information about the Somerset Academy schools or to apply for the lottery or Arts Conservatory, visit the website at www.somersetacademy.com.

T
HE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY for everyone in the city. That’s why we have been busy in sharing information with school administrators, parents, students and community leaders via school presentations and special gatherings that target such critical issues from online and school safety to drug concerns. Most recently I attended a presentation by our Pembroke Pines Police Department Threat Assessment Team that was made to West Broward High School and Silver Trail Middle School parents and students, as well as at a Principals breakfast. Information regarding online and gaming safety risks, which included the topics of social media awareness, cyberbullying, sexting, online predators, exposure to inappropriate content etc., and the dangers and consequences of vaping and THC Oil, were discussed. Suggestions were provided to parents about what they can do to protect their children and how to address these hidden dangers with their children. And, of course, school security is always a topic that we address with all of our school principals. Once again, we also cannot stress enough that false threats of violence against schools are not jokes. There will be severe consequences for such behavior that will affect the student far into the future and for the rest of their lives. On a lighter note, I’d like to invite everyone to the 18th Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament being held on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club, located at 10500 Taft Street, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. This Golf Tournament benefits the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. Over the past 18 years, this event has raised over one million dollars thanks to the generosity of sponsors and golfers. It includes an 18- hole tournament, a putting contest, lunch, refreshments on ‘The Green,’ deluxe buffet dinner, prizes, a live auction and awards. I hope to see you there! And, be sure to check out our city calendar on the city’s website at www.ppines. com (scroll down and hit View All Events) to make sure you don’t miss a lot of exciting programs and activities coming up such as the 21st ArtFest in the Pines, Relay for Life and all of the many fun events happening at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center like the Master Chef Chocolate Challenge and Spring Tea. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor,
