THE PHILANTHROPIST A PERSON WHO SEEKS TO PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF OTHERS, ESPECIALLY BY THE GENEROUS DONATION OF MONEY TO GOOD CAUSES.

SPREADING THE LOVE

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

ALEXANDRA VAN GEMERDEN THE KIDS KINDNESS PROJECT • THEKIDSKINDNESSPROJECT.COM

“My hope is to encourage children to help and learn from each other while spreading the magic of kindness. When everyone gets together to help; magic happens. Spreading kindness and caring for others can truly make a difference.”

BACKGROUND

No stranger to philanthropy, van Gemerden says she always dreamed of helping others, especially children. She translated her passion into volunteer work throughout her childhood and college, but was sidetracked into a career in hotel management and banking after college. Her desire to give back inspired her to work with organizations such as the Little Lighthouse Foundation before starting the Kids Kindness Project in early 2018.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

With a mission to “encourage children to spread kindness while helping and learning from each other,” the organization aims to spread the love via initiatives and events such as the first Kids Kindness Day on May 11. “A kind word, a kind thought or simply a smile can change someone’s entire day,” says van Gemerden. “Where there is kindness there is more love, happiness and joy. Kindness makes one feel good and helps others. Kindness is simply magical.”

10

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | May 2018

A UNIFIED MISSION

van Gemerden says though the organization is relatively new, she’s eager to work with other groups to create opportunities for kids across South Florida. In addition to bringing in supporting families and ambassadors, such as TV star and Telemundo host Andrea Minski , she has partnered up with Fundimension owner Joyce Fohrman to host “Kids Play 4 Kids,” an event that welcomed more 200 children on April 13. The Project invited children from the Foundation 2 F.A.M.E. after school program, Genesis Hopeful Haven and Eneida M. Hartner Elementary School for unlimited play at Fundimension...and more. “There were balloon twisters, shows, face painters, a bouncy house, art and much more,” says van Gemerden. “It was an unforgettable afternoon filled with love and kindness where everything was possible. It was magical to see the joy and happiness on the children’s faces.”

KIDS KINDNESS DAY

Coming up, the Project is focused on their inaugural day of kindness on May 11. “It will be meaningful day where children get to think about kindness and how they can make a difference,” says van Gemerden. Participating schools and businesses will have the opportunity to create “Kindness Wall” where children can write messages of kindness to others. “It can be a thought or an act of kindness. Each Kindness Wall will represent a world filled with love, compassion and kindness,” she says.

EARLY 2,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS, EDUCATORS, COMMUNITY activists and leaders gathered together in March for “Raising Positive Children: Helping Your Child Cope with Stress in Today’s Challenging World,” a forum held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. Pines Commissioner Iris A. Siple, West Campus Charter School Principal Michael Castellano, and the Education Roundtable Forum together with the City of Pembroke Pines welcomes Dr. Scott Poland as the guest lecturer, presenting information on effective strategies to build resilience in children, identify and prevent suicidal behavior, and recognize at-risk behavior in children. “Children today live in a very fast paced world and are exposed to so much more than often-times they are ready for,” said Commissioner Siple. “It’s important that we continue to collaborate together Dr. Scott Poland and take positive action to address their stressors, and also take an honest look at how to prevent the continuing rise in teen suicides. We were very pleased that so many people attended, and we hope to continue with future forums on a variety of other critical topics.” Dr. Poland, a Professor at the College of Psychology and Co- Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University, helped those in attendance understand common factors in youth suicide, offered insight into how parents, schools and the community can help today’s youth, and increase overall awareness of the issues facing children on a daily basis. Poland, a licensed psychologist, is internationally recognized as an expert on youth suicide, self-injury, school violence, bullying prevention, threat assessment and school crisis. Poland also authored or co-authored five books and many chapters and articles on these subjects. Staggering statistics from the CDC indicate that suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24, and that four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warning signs. According to Dr. Poland, more young people in recent years have died from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, HIV/ AIDS, congenital birth defects and diabetes combined. While Dr. Poland spoke at length about teen suicide, his presentation also touched on a variety of other important issues including teen depression, children and trauma, screen time challenges, bullying, and driving, and he provided recommendations and tips on how to handle some of life’s most difficult situations with children and teens. “Be involved and present in your child’s life,” Poland advised. HE VILLAGERS RECENTLY AWARDED $35,000 FOR COLLEGE SCHOLarships to deserving students with an interest in architectural historic preservation and restoration. Twelve students were selected from the field of applicants based on scholastic standing, recommendations, samples of their work and their statement of interest in preserving architectural past. Recipients from the University of Miami (UM) are senior Sydney Matsumoto and previous recipients, juniors Shannar O’Connor and David Holmes. All three are in the five-year School of Architecture program.Matsumoto will apply her scholarship to her continued studies in graduate school at UM and said her interest is “in creating spaces that coexist harmoniously with nature through the application of sustainability and historic preservation.” Florida International University (FIU) recipients include graduate student Robert Colón, a junior seeking a Master of Landscape Architecture, and Kaitlyn Fuson a senior in the Master of Architecture program and second-time recipient. FIU’s Colón explained to the group that his landscape design degree encompasses urban design and entails the “entire experience walking out the front door.” He went on to say “when developers tear down an area, they are missing out on the character of the whole city. Historic preservation in urban settings is often cheaper and provides many economical options.” Mayrelis Perez, from the University of Florida, is working towards a Master of Historic Preservation. In her application essay she wrote about growing up in Cuba “surrounded by Ruins” and said she chose the field of preservation architecture “to save, rehabilitate and hold onto places.” A portion of the scholarship funds are designated for deserving students graduating from DASH, Miami-Dade County’s magnet school for architecture and design. The winners of the award are able to designate the scholarship to the university of their choice. Graduating seniors selected were Yunru (Daisy) Chen, Miami; Adam Samson Margolis, Surfside; Frederick (Didi) Rapp, Key Biscayne; Dani Simons, Miami; Carolina Zuniga, Doral; and Ruth Suarez, Pembroke Pines. Victoria L. Champion and Renee Belair co-chaired The Villagers scholarship selection committee with Margie Palmer, Joanne Meagher, and Verna Hodges.

HEALTHY LIVING

3 Ways Millennials Can Help Their Baby Boomer Parents Get Fit

A

GING BABY BOOMERS WHO NEGLECT their health and fitness don’t just harm themselves. Their lifestyles also affect their adult children, who eventually could end up caring for them – both financially and physically – as their health declines. Of course, that’s not the only reason those adult children might feel concerned. They also may like having mom and dad around, and want that to continue for years to come. So they have a vested interest in encouraging their parents to get fit and stay fit. But young adults who cringe at their parents’ eating and exercise habits may be reluctant to broach the subject. How can they start such a conversation? And what are some suggestions for healthy living their parents are likely to put into practice? One thing that might be tempting, but probably won’t work, is a harsh lecture, says Jaime Brenkus (exercisewithjaime.com), a nationally recognized fitness expert and fitness coach for Evergreen Wellness, which provides videos and articles to help older adults enjoy healthier lives. “You don’t need to give them a sermon,” he says. “But you should remind them of how important exercise and healthy eating are, and how much you care about 22

having them around for you and for the grandchildren.” There is plenty of nutrition and exercise advice that can help older people, but Brenkus says a few starter tips include: »» Encourage them to drink more water. This may sound basic, but not everyone drinks as much water as they should – even though this is a healthy habit that’s simple to accomplish. A CDC study, for example, revealed that 43 percent of adults drink fewer than four cups of water a day and seven percent don’t drink any glasses of water at all. (Presumably, they get their fluids from other beverages that have water in them.) Baby boomers grew up drinking a lot of soda and Kool-Aid. Later, they graduated to coffee and alcoholic beverages. Many of them have adapted to today’s bottled-water culture, but for some those old habits may die hard and water isn’t always their first choice when thirst beckons. »» Recommend they try strength training. The most effective way to increase metabolism and to help reverse the aging process is stimulating muscles by lifting challenging weights to increase lean muscle

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | May 2018

mass, Brenkus says. “More strength will make daily life easier for them,” he says. “It will give them better balance and they will be less likely to fall. It also can strengthen the heart, and it makes them look and feel younger.” »» Make sure they socialize. This isn’t directly related to exercise, but studies have shown that people who are active socially are healthier and live longer lives. Socializing, for example, helps reduce the stress that can contribute to a number of health problems. If socializing is combined with exercise (playing tennis, taking regular walks with a friend), then that’s all the better. “Helping your parents adopt a healthier lifestyle is about encouraging them to change their habits for eating, cooking, shopping and fitness,” Brenkus says. “And even more importantly, it’s about helping them to change their thinking habits. Says Brenkus, “Maybe sometime in the past they tried a diet or fitness regimen and they failed at it. That doesn’t mean they can’t try again – and this time with you as their cheerleader.”

For couples, here are a few places that offer romance, magical moments and bonding. »» Blackberry Farm in Tennessee is the perfect place to unplug. An intimate, luxury hotel on 4,200 acres. A definite bucket list item. »» A stay at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. A prerequisite to your stay is to watch Somewhere in Time. »» Experience staying in the Heceta Head Lighthouse in Cape Cove, Oregon. »» Attend the Burning Man for a life changing experience. Located in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada this event takes place once a year and is quite the happening. »» Shotgun Camp at Sea Island Shooting School in Georgia where you will learn clay shooting and hunting. »» Hike the John Muir Way through Scotland. »» Spend a week at The Point in the Adirondacks. This “camp” built by the magnets of the Gilded Age will blow you away. »» Stay in a tree house and feel like a kid again at TreeHouse Point in Washington. This summer, create a magical memory. Do something completely different. We are all guilty of planning the same thing year after year because it is easy and familiar. Our “go to” places could be the beach, the mountains, the same resort or a family home out of state. Commit to making this year’s vacation unusual and novel in some way. Have fun and travel safe! FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

T

HE HURRICANE SEASON OFFICIALLY BEGINS ON JUNE 1 and ends on November 30, 2018. The time to prepare is now! Last year, Hurricane Irma challenged not only our city, but the entire state once it hit our shores. It is a lesson learned to always be prepared each hurricane season and throughout the year. The 2018 hurricane season is expected to be more active than usual, however, as we all know, it only takes one storm to cause damage. A total of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and two major hurricanes are expected this season. The City of Pembroke Pines is committed to providing preparation information year round. Through our “Pembroke Pines Prepared” focus, residents can get up to date information, resources and tips on how best to prepare for and handle hurricanes before, during and after, as well as other possible emergencies by going to our website at ppines.com. Click on Pembroke Pines Prepared under “Living in Pines” at the top of the site on the home page. Should a hurricane head our way, please be sure to check for the most current and accurate information on our website. We also encourage everyone to sign up for CodeRed, a free telephone notification system, to receive emergency notifications -- a link is conveniently located on the website’s home page. As we enter this busy weather season, it’s critical that the City has the correct and most up to date information from the Homeowners and Condo Associations in the City. Our Code of Ordinance §32.170 states that all HOAs must provide current and updated contact information of HOA board members and emergency contacts to the City so that if there were another hurricane with lengthy power outages (such as occurred with Hurricane Irma), no resident would be blindsided by isolation and the inability to communicate with resources. During emergency conditions it is important that communities are able to receive advisories, warnings, and updates as they are broadcast by our Emergency Operations Management. This is why the City emphasizes that HOA board members and organizers keep the City updated with important contact information. By providing us information, HOAs do their part on behalf of their residents by increasing communicability with the City. We ask that HOAs and Condo Association please visit the City of Pembroke Pines website at ppines.com to complete an information form, or go directly to ppines.com/ HOACondoContact. And, I’d also like to take a moment to humbly brag that Pembroke Pines, according to a new WalletHub report, has ranked No. 6 on WalletHub’s “2018 Best Cities for Hispanic Entrepreneurs.” The survey compared the 180 largest U.S. cities across 23 key metrics, including Hispanic entrepreneurship rate, Hispanic income growth and share of Hispanic-owned businesses. I’ll end with a reminder that we have many exciting events planned in June, including Mayor’s Kids’ Day. Information on this event and all others can be found on our calendar at ppines.com, on our Facebook Page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines, on Twitter @cityofppines and Instagram @cityofppines. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis Frank C. Ortis Mayor of Pembroke Pimes

5 QUESTIONS WITH…

Shane Samole DIRECTOR AT B & D GROUP

P

OOL ACCESSORIES MAY BE THE HOTTEST COMMODITY OF SUMMER, but ever wondered where these fun and funky floaties originate? Lucky for us, it’s right around the corner. South Florida-based Pool Candy creates and sells some of the most in-demand floats and accessories in the market, with everything from glitter noodles to watermelon pool tubes available for your Instagram pleasure. We spoke with B & D Group Director (parent company of Pool Candy) about what’s hot for 2018, the creation of a company and the everlasting appeal of glitter.

POOL FLOATS HAVE TAKEN ON A LIFE OF THEIR OWN, WHAT’S DRIVEN THE POPULARITY OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS?

I think social media has played a huge role. Back in the day, pool accessories just needed to be functional. Now they have to look good too, since everyone is sharing pictures on social media of themselves relaxing at the pool or hanging out with friends at the beach. Your pool float should be as individualized as you are. Our strategy is to design products that create “instagrammable” moments for our customers.

Honestly? Millennials and Gen Z. Thanks to my kids we have boots on the ground when it comes to what the market wants. We come up with ideas based on what their college friends are requesting. Many items we create come from our surveys and focus groups of their friends. We then test the products at their pool and beach parties to get their final reviews.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE POOL FLOAT BUSINESS?

A few years ago, my fraternity brother and I started a development company, B&D Group, where we have been inventing and manufacturing toy products for clients across the globe. After studying the pool industry, we thought that there was an opportunity to create unique products for the inflatable market as we felt the product being sold at retail had become stale with the same items being offered year after year. We now offer over 100 different styles of floats that we have designed. As a rule, we only want to market products that have been invented or developed by us.

We have created an extensive line of floaties that includes Giant Glitter Pool Tubes, Jumbo Beach Balls, 6ft tall Super Noodles, Drink Floats and our new Glitterfied Animal Tubes that include Unicorns, Flamingos and Swans. Our products can be found at your local Target store or PoolCandy.net.

WE HAVE TO KNOW... IS RUNNING A POOL FLOAT COMPANY AS FUN AS IT SEEMS FROM THE OUTSIDE?

I’m not going to lie, it is a lot of fun. Our entire office is full of inflatable prototypes and products. We get to create these amazing items that start as an idea among the group, and then see it come to life. We love what we do here, especially when we get to see how our products make other people so happy. The fact that I get to work with my family and best friends is just the icing on the cake. PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE

PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED Experts recommend setting aside 3–9 months of take-home income for an emergency fund that can cover anything from car repairs to unexpected health care costs. If you haven’t started one, or are short of your goal, consider using your tax refund to begin saving or close the gap.

3 4

CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS

Setting aside some or all of your tax refund in a savings account, CD or IRA can help you build a comfortable nest egg so you can enjoy your well-deserved retirement years.

GROW COLLEGE SAVINGS

Contributing to college savings plans now can help prepare you for the costs of your child’s tuition, housing, books and transportation. Certain savings vehicles may offer greater results from interest compounded over time. Consider deposit accounts such as a custodial savings account or CD or investment accounts such as a 529 college savings plan or a mutual fund.

REMODEL YOUR HOME

You may be able to increase the value of your home by using your tax refund to pay for upgrades or repairs. Installing double-paned windows or energy-efficient appliances may also help you save on your monthly utility bill.

PAY YOURSELF

DONATE TO CHARITY It’s rewarding to pay it forward by donating a portion of your tax refund to a philanthropic cause. Contributions to many nonprofits are tax-deductible, too.

INVEST IN YOUR CAREER

Using a tax refund for professional training or continuing education classes is a great way to pursue a better job, larger salary or new career opportunity.

TAKE A VACATION

If you’ve taken care of all your financial obligations, a vacation can be a great way to treat yourself and unwind. Your tax refund can cover all or part of your expenses, whether they’re for a weekend staycation or a trip you’ve wanted to take for years.

BUILD AN INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

Depending on your long-term goals, you may want to use your tax refund to start or contribute to an investment portfolio.
