SUMMERFEST 2018

SCREENAGERS SCREENING

The Symphony of the Americas 30th Anniversary season celebration continues with Summerfest 2018 in Pembroke Pines. This acclaimed summer music festival presents one month of performances throughout Florida and the Americas. The City of Pembroke Pines performance will be held on August 9, 2018 at the Susan B. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts at the River of Grass ArtsPark, located at 17195 Sheridan, at 7 p.m. Refreshing cool waters and the Oscar winning movie Shape of Water are all inspirations for this year’s Symphony of the Americas annual Summerfest – The Shape of Music.

A special screening of “Screenagers,” was held last month at the Charles F. Dodge City Center as part of the “Raising Positive Children,” series. The award-winning documentary was shown alongside a panel of local experts who shared insights on the challenges of growing up in a world filled with technological advances that affect children’s lives. This was the second in a series of presentations hosted by Pembroke Pines Commissioner Iris A. Siple, West Campus Charter School Principal Michael Castellano, the Education Roundtable Forum and the City of Pembroke Pines to call attention to and find solutions for the many issues children face today at home and at school. “Screenagers” explores how the focus on technology impacts a child’s development while offering solutions on how to empower kids and their families to best navigate and find balance with the digital world.

THE PHILANTHROPIST A PERSON WHO SEEKS TO PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF OTHERS, ESPECIALLY BY THE GENEROUS DONATION OF MONEY TO GOOD CAUSES.

A World of Change

ATTIE CREWS / MEGAN KELLER / OLIVIA BACARDI BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

ONE CHANGE (ONECHANGEBRACELETS.ORG)

BACKGROUND

As students at Palmer Trinity, Crews, Keller and Bacardi (the two former are freshman, the latter a sophomore) say they have been encouraged to become involved in their community. With the support of their parents, the three have each volunteered separately with Symphonettes, Twenty Little Working Girls, and various organizations benefiting Africa. But it was when Crews’ mother was diagnosed with melanoma three years ago that they found their own calling. “We have learned that it is very common in Miami because we are in an area that gets a lot of sun exposure, so we decided to find a way to help prevent it in children and young adults, and to raise money to fund research,” says Crews.

ONE CHANGE

PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY

THE BENEFIT OF EDUCATION

With the help of beads they used as elementary students at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School, the three friends created a unique bracelet that changes color when exposed to UV rays. The color changing bead acts as a reminder to put on sunscreen or to move inside, away from dangerous rays. The bracelets come in various colors, cost just $10 each and are handmade by a small group of dedicated workers. “The bracelets are made by us, our parents, and our siblings. We work on them at our houses and anywhere we can work on them during our free time,” says Keller.

Right now, the bracelets are sold via the organization’s website as well as at Blush Boutique in South Miami, South Miami Dermatology, Blow Me Away Salon, and Learning Express as well as at Pensacola’s Sunless Store. With an initial goal of raising several thousand dollars, the friends were overwhelmed at the response, raising $10,000 in just four months as well as competing in an entrepreneurship contest, and gaining more and more positive feedback. “We feel like the sky's the limit,” says Bacardi. “Our new goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of this year. Since our younger siblings are involved with us, we are working on long term goals and the sustainability of One Change.”

While the three are thrilled with the response, their true pride comes in spreading knowledge about melanoma and making a difference in finding a cure for the disease. “The seriousness of melanoma, coupled with the fact that it is one of the only preventable cancers leads us to believe that One Change can help make a difference in finding a cure or more effective treatments, and educating people to prevent it in the first place, which would be the best solution,” says Crews.

“Everyone should find something that they are passionate about, include their friends, and make it fun. The more you enjoy it, the easier it is to make an impact.” 12

Better Money Habits: Creating a Budget AS WE ENTER THE MID-WAY MARK OF THE YEAR, IT’S NOW A GREAT TIME TO REEVALUATE YOUR FINANCES FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR AHEAD. LIKE MANY BUSINESSES DO, A MID-YEAR ASSESSMENT IS GOOD PRACTICE TO HELP YOU AVOID OVERSPENDING, MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AND PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO YOUR EXPENSES. WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING TO CREATE A PERSONAL BUDGET SPREADSHEET OR JUST GET A BETTER GRASP ON MONEY MANAGEMENT, START WITH THESE SIX STEPS.

STEP 1 NOTE YOUR NET INCOME.

The first step in creating a budget is to identify the amount of money you have coming in. Keep in mind, however, that it’s easy to overestimate what you can afford if you think of your total salary as what you have to spend. Remember to subtract your deductions, such as for Social Security, taxes, 401(k) and flexible spending account allocations, when creating a budget worksheet. Your final take-home pay is called net income, and that is the number you should use when creating a budget.

STEP 2 STEP 3 STEP 4 STEP 5

TRACK YOUR SPENDING.

It’s helpful to keep track of and categorize your spending so you know where you can make adjustments. Begin by listing all your fixed expenses. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to cut back on these, but knowing how much of your monthly income they take up can be helpful. Next list all your variable expenses—those that may change from month to month such as groceries, gas and entertainment. This is an area where you might find opportunities to cut back. Credit card and bank statements are a good place to start since they often itemize or categorize your monthly expenditures.

SET YOUR GOALS.

Before you start sifting through the information you’ve tracked, make a list of all the financial goals you want to accomplish in the short-and long-term. Short-term goals should take no longer than a year to achieve. Long-term goals, such as saving for retirement or your child’s education, may take years to reach. Remember, your goals don’t have to be set in stone, but identifying your priorities before you start planning a budget will help. For example, it may be easier to cut spending if you know your short-term goal is to reduce credit card debt.

MAKE A PLAN.

Use the variable and fixed expenses you compiled to help you get a sense of what you’ll spend in the coming months. With your fixed expenses, you can predict fairly accurately how much you’ll have to budget for. Use your past spending habits as a guide when trying to predict your variable expenses. For instance, if you drive to work every day, gasoline probably counts as a need. A monthly music subscription, however, may count as a want. This difference becomes important when it’s time to make adjustments.

ADJUST YOUR HABITS IF NECESSARY.

No phone calls please! Email resume to: Publisher@PembrokePinesCityNews.com 14

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | June 2018

Having documented your income and spending, you can start to see where you have money left over or where you can cut back so that you have money to put toward your goals. Can you skip movie night in favor of a movie at home? Try adjusting the numbers you’ve tracked to see how much money that frees up. If the numbers still aren’t adding up, you can look at adjusting your fixed expenses. Doing so will be much more difficult and require greater discipline, but on close inspection a “need” may just be a “hard to part with.” Such decisions come with big trade-offs, so make sure you carefully weigh your options.

STEP 6

KEEP CHECKING IN.

It’s important that you review your budget on a regular basis to be sure you are staying on track. You can also compare your monthly expenses to those of people similar to you. Few elements of your budget are set in stone: You may get a raise, your expenses may increase or you may have reached your goal and want to plan for a new one. Whatever the reason, keep checking in with your budget following the steps above.

ART SCENE

REDEYE BEYOND at ARTSERVE

O

NCE THE FIREWORKS FIZZLE, IT’S TIME TO SEARCH and explore the summer’s next big thing, and the wait won’t be long. The explosive summer event, REDEYE, is right around the corner. Once again, REDEYE promises hours of exciting art, music, film, food and fun on July 15. A Broward tradition for over a decade, the RedEye art and music festival brings together artists of every genre under one roof, for one night, to create a wild underground art happening. Guests roam from room to room as they experience live bands, indie films, interactive art, cutting edge VR games, spoken word, improv comedy, performance art, moving art, and body art – experiences that defy category. And this year, REDEYE promises to take you “Beyond.” “RedEye’s wild ride of human artistry began as a way to support our non-profit mission, but has turned into a beloved summer happening,” says ArtServe CEO Jaye Abbate. “It’s a night for the community to come together. To celebrate the creative spirit alive and flourishing in South Florida, and have four hours of solid fun for less than the cost of a movie ticket.” Attendees – even non-art lovers – are exposed to new films, cool VR experiences, new music, and new dance forms. “They can push way past their comfort zones this year, experience something wildly unexpected, and have a great time for a great cause,” adds Abbate. Funds raised will support local artists, programs for at-risk youth and underserved populations, workshops that train our arts innovators of tomorrow, and enhance the quality of life for everyone. That’s one reason nearly 100 artists of every genre will be participating. It’s also a major reason corporate sponsors want to get involved. “The arts are essential to our economy, to our quality of life, to our ability to find new ways to heal and educate. That’s why we support this event,” says Carmen Miller from McKinley Insurance. “We are fortunate to have a non-profit like ArtServe that advocates for artists, trains them, creates opportunities for them to have their work seen and sold, and finds creative ways to enrich our community, year after year.” Making REDEYE a success is more important than ever this year, notes Abbate. “The state budget has slashed cultural arts funding

dramatically this year, making Florida 48th in the nation. That means our museums, history centers, dance and music groups and all the programs we provide free for underserved populations will be harder to maintain. The more tickets and art we sell, the more we can keep these programs alive.” To that end, REDEYE promises new elements and surprises this year. REDEYE will be more interactive. Offer more exciting installation works. Live painting will take on a whole new meaning. The Studio Stage sponsored by Puppet Network, will feature a funky mash up of acoustic players, standup comedians, dancers, and surprise pop-up performances. And once REDEYE heats up, it will be easy to cool down in the Wynwood Brewing Beer Garden. Michelle Rose Domb + Josh the Man will emcee RedEye’s top bands including Big Sounds Better, Deep Seas, Super Gold, Emily Sheila, AudioCrisis, Joey Sexton, Tim Clay, and more on Redeye’s four stages. Plus, an over-the-top “Fashionista Fest” promises to take REDEYE truly beyond expectations. As DJ Diesel, who will be spinning on the gallery stage, says, “You can’t find a better ticket in town this summer.”

Miramar Goes ‘Out of the Box’ with New Specialty Summer Camps for Kids

W

HILE BASKETBALL, SOCCER OR SWIMming may be at the top of some children’s summer camp wish lists, Sports Camps are not for everyone. For the child, adolescent, or teen who is interested in modeling and fashion, learning to play chess and golf, or producing music in a music studio, now they can do it this summer during Miramar’s allnew Specialty Camps! “I think it’s good to be able to give our residents a variety. Looking around, I don’t think our neighboring cities are doing this. It’s out of the box for us,” said John Kee, Operations Manager for the City’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The full list of Specialty Camps for kids ages 6-12 include Xploration, a science and nature camp where campers will learn more about biology and zoology; Animativities, where drawing, painting and sculpting are a part of the daily itinerary; Runway in Paris, for the little superstars who can’t wait to dress up and strike a pose in front of the camera; and Jr. Chefs, a culinary and tasting camp sure to send your child home with skills to help out in the kitchen. For pre-teens and teens ages 12-17, Career Bound offers an introduction to trades and colleges where they will learn how to draft a resume and practice their interview techniques; and Beatz & Production, where campers get hands-on in a music studio and learn the ins and outs of music production. There is also Pawn-N-Putt, an introduction to Chess and Golf for ages 8-17, and S.T.E.M. Evolution, which

prepares children ages 8-12 with skills to compete in science, technology, engineering and math. “The variety sets Miramar and our facilities apart. I think we have state-of-the-art facilities that a lot of cities don’t have, and also a friendly, professional staff,” said Kee. All of the Specialty Camps will take place at Vizcaya Park and include lunch and snacks. For more information on all summer camp programming, visit MiramarFl.gov.

HURRICANE SAFETY

THE A TO Z’S OF HU BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

APPRAISAL

FEMA

Don’t wait until the storm is blowing in to take inventory of your personal possessions. Make sure to note brand names and descriptions of items along with an estimated value and date of purchase (look for apps that will help!). Also be sure to create a safe spot for important documents (including insurance policies, medical records and your pet's veterinary records) along with copies that reside outside of your home.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a wealth of information and downloads on their website (fema.gov) while their app allows users to receive weather alerts from NOAA’s National Weather Service, lifesaving safety tips, and provides access to disaster resources should survivors need them.

BOATS According to the experts at Eric’s Outboard Marine the best place for your boat is hauled out and secured on dry land. Boat owners should also always check their insurance policy, make sure the batteries are charged and the bilge pumps functioning. Also, don’t forget to remove all loose items from the boat ( i.e. cushions, fishing rods, coolers and radio equipment).

Historically the peak of our season hits between mid-August and late October and brings with it 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major (Category 3 or above) hurricanes.

Newbie or South Florida veteran, the web is alive and well with a plethora of help for storm prep. Check out FEMA’s website for checklists and preparedness plans, Ppines.com for local information, and sites such as redcross.org and emergency.cdc. gov for up-to-date supply checklists. Want to track a hurricane? Follow the National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa. gov or head over to Stormpulse.com for live radar and forecast models.

Dubbed “Godzilla” for its ability to hold back hurricanes in the Atlantic, El Nino was declared dead by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center in early June. What does that mean for South Florida? It means all eyes are now on La Nina — which could bring warmer, drier winters and a more comfortable setting for Atlantic storms.

Along with a new hurricane season comes a new list of names. Here are the winners for 2016: Alex; Bonnie; Colin; Danielle; Earl; Fiona; Gaston; Hermine; Ian; Julia; Karl; Lisa; Matthew; Nicole; Otto; Paula; Richard; Shary; Tobias; Virginie; Walter.

NAMES

Experts suggest stockpiling at least a three-day supply of all medicines and making sure to have any supplies that family members may need such as hearing aids with extra batteries, walking canes or syringes.

If you’re looking for all your information in one place, head over to broward. org/hurricane. The website features a well of information as well as a downloadable 12-page Hurricane Preparation Guide.

In the event of a storm, experts suggest having a family communication plan in place, which includes making sure everyone has emergency numbers and picking a single family member for everyone to check in with should they be separated. Also important? Try texting rather than calling, texts can often get through easier and won’t tie up phone lines needed by first responders.

Dog get nervous during storms? Try this simple trick: Lightly rub an unscented dryer sheet on their fur to lesson the static electricity and, as a result, calm their nerves.

meteorologists), characterized by below-normal water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean near the equator, creates less wind shear in developmental regions of the Atlantic Ocean, increasing the likelihood of active storms.

URRICANE SEASON OLD WIVES TALES We’ve all heard them, but are they true? Well, according to experts a red sky (of the “Red Sky at Night, Sailor's Delight. Red Sky in the Morning, Sailor's Warning.”) can imply moisture in the air; hence stable air coming if seen at night and a rain warning if

seen in the morning. But what about the old Miami favorite of counting the seconds post-lightning strike? Turns out it’s actually close — light travels faster than sound (about a mile per every five seconds).

PETS According to the Humane Society the best way to keep pets happy and safe during a storm is to keep them with you. Be sure they have an up-to-date ID tag with a current cell phone number; close off unsafe nooks or crannies where your pet may want to hide; bring your pet indoors as soon as trouble is on the way; and never let your pet roam free post-storm.

QUESTIONS Riding out a storm with young children can be a stressful experience but there are ways to make it a little bit easier. Experts agree that remaining calm and in-charge during storm prep and the actual storm can ease kids fears. Additionally, they recommend answering kids questions truthfully but without embellishment and encouraging kids to ask questions and discuss what’s going on.

ROOF Don’t neglect your roof when it comes to prep time. Be sure to fix missing or loose shingles to prevent water from leaking into your home as well as remove any and all lawn furniture that could fly up and damage your roof. Also- be sure to trim back trees to a safe distance to reduce the likelihood of them falling onto the roof during a storm.

SHUT IT DOWN Sure we know to shut down appliances during a major storm but what about...um, applications? Make your phone last longer by shutting down all unnecessary apps, and yes, that includes Bluetooth and Wi-FI. You can also turn down the brightness on your screen, turn off all push notifications and send text messages rather than make phone calls.

To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

TREES When it comes to trees, experts advise that those with a thick canopy should be regularly thinned (though try to not remove more than 25-30 percent). Palms, however, are adapted to wind storms and don’t need hurricane pruning; simply remove coconuts and large palm seeds.

UNDERWATER Think rainfall and floods are the only water too worry about? Think again. Pools need extra care pre-storm as well. Always be sure to remove any pool toys or furniture from the patio, turn off circuit breakers to the pool and shock your pool as your normally would. The one thing to never do? Drain the pool. Pool water provides important weight to hold the sides and bottom of the pool in place and empty pools can experience serious structural damage.

VIDEO Put your cell phone camera to good use by photographing valuables before a storm hits and taking images and video of post-storm damage. Experts advise getting video as soon as the storm passes so that insurance adjusters can see the damage in the correct state.

WINDOWS Many South Florida homes have either upgraded to impact windows, or are in the process of changing over but if you haven’t made the change here are a few ways to protect your home: Shutters are almost the first choice for protecting windows and can be permanently attached to the home, making it easy to either roll them out or put them in place when a storm is imminent. Plywood can be a good option as well but may require at least a weekend of work to measure, cut and pre-install.

X MARKS THE SPOT Head over to Broward.org for a list of evacuation zones and shelters. And remember, just because a home isn’t on the coast doesn’t mean it’s not susceptible to flooding. Poor drainage systems, rapid accumulation of rainfall, and broken water mains can all result in flooding.

YARDWORK Before a hurricane, make sure to walk your yard and remove any loose object including bird feeders, wind chimes, toys and trash cans. Also be sure to harvest any fruits or veggies growing in the yard as they can become dangerous flying objects should high winds hit.

ZIKA With all the new of the Zika virus, mosquitos are an even bigger story than normal this summer. So how to keep them in check? First, stay inside during peak activity time or wear light-colored, loose clothing and insect repellent. Second, remove all standing water including leaky pipes, flower vases, birdbaths, potted plants, trash cans and pet bowls.

SUMMERTIME

Pool Rules of Summer BY JAKE BELL

S

ummer has arrived, and with it raging heat from morning to night. After a long day of fishing, biking, or whatever leisure you like it’s nice to cool off in your pool. But what should you do when you realize the backyard oasis you envisioned is now a green pond? During the summer season your pool can become much more difficult to maintain as a result of the tropical weather. Here are a few steps, straight from the experts, on maintaining your pool and preventing and treating algae. First, pool care experts stress the importance of visiting a local pool store weekly to test your pool water (some pool stores test water for free). You should bring with you to the pool store enough pool water to fill a water bottle. The employee who tests your water should be able to tell you if there are any chemical imbalances that can be corrected. They should test for: »» Chlorine – used to sanitize water and prevent algae growth »» pH – tested to determine if water is acidic, basic, or neutral »» Alkalinity – helps to balance the pH of water »» Calcium – helps keep the finish (floor and walls) from eroding

22

»» Stabilizer – used to protect chlorine from evaporating By keeping the chemical balance of your pool water in check and doing weekly maintenance you greatly reduce the chances of algae growth. This time of year, however, even when these steps are followed, it is still possible you may suffer from an algae bloom. This is caused by the warm weather and evaporation, rain and dilution, or even missing a weekly dose of chlorine just one time. The direct sunlight your pool takes in feeds algae through the process of photosynthesis. Rain dilutes chlorine and can even introduce algae into your pool. After a heavy rainfall chlorine should be added to the pool. You should also run the pool pump for the hottest eight hours of the day every day to keep the water from becoming stagnant. Even after taking all these precautions there is still a chance your pool may turn green or yellow. If you do see algae starting to grow don’t be intimidated, follow these steps and your pool should look better within 24 hours: Test the pool water and if needed add acid and/or stabilizer. »» Brush the spots of your pool where algae is growing. »» Without a doubt you will be adding 5-20 gallons of chlorine depending on how bad the algae is.

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | June 2018

»» Let your pump run 24 hours to allow chlorine to circulate. »» If the algae isn’t cleared up in 24 hours repeat steps listed above »» If the pool is cloudy 24 hours later use a water clarifier »» If you have any questions about maintaining or clearing up a green pool go to your local pool store and ask for advice.

POOLS REQUIRE WEEKLY MAINTENANCE TO STAY IN TOP SHAPE. HERE IS A LIST OF THINGS YOU CAN DO WEEKLY TO MAINTAIN A SPARKLING POOL:

Net any debris off the surface and floor of your pool. Brush the walls and floor of your pool Empty out your skimmer basket and pump basket Clean (cartridge filter) or backwash (sand filter) your filter 5 Float two-to-three stabilized chlorine tablets 6 Add 2.5 gallons of chlorine and let your pump run 24 hours 1 2 3 4

ELCOME TO THE FIRST OFFICIAL MONTH OF summer! It's always a welcome change when we look forward to a new chapter within a new season. Our kids are out of school - some for a short time, others for an extended period but just because our kids are out of school does not mean they should not have outstanding opportunities for additional educational and professional development. One of the great benefits the City of Miramar presents to our youth is access to our growing business sector. I believe when we expose our youth to the business community, their horizons are broadened and it leads to the creation of new dreams and new aspirations of who they can become and the career possibilities in their future. This is why the Mayor’s office is again offering Mayor Messam’s Aviation Academy and in addition, Mayor Messam’s Summer Technology Boot Camp. Because Miramar has a large aviation sector, the aviation academy provides hands-on experiences covering how to become a pilot, engineer, air traffic controller, maintenance repair technician and other exciting aviation careers. Aviation Camp will take place on Tuesday, July 24th for 75 students. Of the 75 students, 35 will be selected to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of Miami International Airport. Another industry that is growing tremendously in Miramar is the technology sector which includes information technology, software development and cyber security. To expose our youth to these exciting opportunities, we will also host Mayor Messam’s Summer Technology Boot Camp, sponsored by TechLaunch@FVI and New Horizons Computer Learning Centers. This two-week camp takes place July 30th through August 10th for 24 High School Students. Both of these camps are free, open only to Miramar residents with sign-up on Eventbrite.com I hope your child is able to take advantage of these additional academic opportunities. Have a great summer,

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

S

UMMER IS HERE AND THAT MEANS MANY OF US WILL be swimming in pools and in the ocean to cool off. I’d like to take this time to remind everyone how important it is to be water safe. Hanging out at the pool, at the beach or even splashing in a wading pool on a hot Florida day is a great way to beat the heat this summer, but it can also spell tragedy if you don’t know how to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death nationwide for people ages 5 to 24, and the number one cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Broward County. It’s never too late to learn how to swim. For more information about swimming lessons, please call 954-450-6895. With the rainy season in South Florida comes mosquitoes. The U.S. environmental Protection Agency offers citizens tips to prevent mosquito bites through a variety of methods. One of the most important actions to take is to remove mosquito habitats. This is done by eliminating standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, toys or any other container where mosquitoes can breed. They recommend emptying and changing the water in bird baths, wading pools and potted plant trays at least once a week; drain temporary pools of water after use; and keep swimming pool water treated and circulating. To avoid getting bitten, keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and socks when possible; tuck shirts into pants; use EPA registered mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely; and replace outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights which tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights. And, it’s best to avoid the outdoors during dusk to dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active. In most cases, mosquitoes are merely a nuisance to humans and domestic animals, however, since they are capable to transmitting a variety of diseases, it’s always best to do what you can to prevent them from breeding and biting. A great way to avoid the heat of summer is to go to The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery or “The Frank” for an array of exhibitions and workshops. You won’t want to miss The Wizard of Oz™ Exhibition taking place now through August 18, 2018. Presented in partnership with Miami Children’s Museum, The Wizard of Oz™ Exhibition invites guests of all ages to embark on a multi-sensory exploration of the iconic Land of Oz. In the only licensed educational exhibit from Warner Brothers, guests engage in a funfilled journey of discovering personal strengths by using literacy, visual and performing arts, investigation of light and science, and much more. Admission is $5 per person. The Frank is located at 601 City Center Way. For additional information on upcoming events, please call 954-392-2120. We have many other excited events coming up this summer, so be sure to check our calendar at ppines.com for info on these and other planned events, and to visit our Facebook Page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines or Instagram @cityofppines. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor,

TRAVEL

Next Stop, Chattanooga, TN BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

I

T SEEMS I HAVE BEEN TRAVELING AROUND THE SOUTH lately so it makes perfect sense that I would find my way to Chattanooga, TN. When “The New York Times” says it’s one of the top 45 places to go, you go check it out. Let’s start with Adam, known as “That Outdoor Guy.” This guy knows everything outdoors and funny to boot so of course he was the perfect match to show me the outdoors of Chattanooga. We started at Point Park, the National Military Park, where I insisted we crawl out on a ledge to get a spectacular view of the river and city. Our next stop was hang gliding. All I can say is what was I thinking (or drinking) when I signed up for this?! Needless to say, I took one look at people jumping off a cement platform high on a mountaintop in a cocoon looking contraption and we were back in the car devising Plan B. Plan B, much to Adam’s chagrin was visiting Rock City. We had passed it coming up and yes, it is a major tourist stop but I wanted to play tourist. He humored me when I said I wanted to follow the music to see where it led but when we found ourselves at the Beer Garden where people were dancing, that’s where he drew the line. “I hike, not dance,” he said as he strutted off to get a beer. The rest of the day was spent at the Bluff View Art District. We had lunch on the patio at Tony’s Pasta Shop and Trattoria and dipped into Rembrandt’s Coffee House for a European style sweet before heading to the sculpture garden. The next stop was a 1905 revival mansion that houses the Hunter Museum. What a fabulous museum with 100 years of architecture and American art. Night was closing in and once again I could hear music in the distance. Adam rolled his eyes when I casually mentioned I wanted to see where it was coming from. Only this time he was pleasantly surprised when it brought us across a bridge to The Ice Cream Show, an adorable ice cream shop with a patio, swings and a guitarist. Sitting on one of the swings, I felt all was right in the world, Adam was smiling with his big ice cream cone, the stars were twinkling

and I was lovin’ Chattanooga. The next two days I enjoyed some of the local eateries. Pizza at Community Pie, drinks at STIR, a craft beer and ping-pong at Clyde's on Main, which is a gastropub in an old auto repair shop and a wonderful dinner of mussels on the patio of Easy Bistro and Bar. I paddle boarded the Tennessee River compliments of L2 Outside and even came across a little Tom Sawyer looking island where I tied up and explored. Staying at The Chattanoogan was a dream and a great way to end each day. It has won “Best of the Best” multiple times and I can see why. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is wonderful and the spa services will meet anyone’s needs. My last night there I grabbed a glass of wine at their upscale bar, The Foundry and moved outside by the fire pit for my last look at the Chattanooga sky.

People tend to call ride-sharing services when they have been out on the town and had too much to drink, which can leave them vulnerable to these types of violent behavior and unaware of the dangerous situation they are in. »» Double check and then check again. When you call for a ride-sharing service you are provided with the driver’s first name, photo, license plate number, picture of the vehicle and their driver’s rating. Don’t skim past this information. It’s important to check out what other users have said about the driver, but most importantly it’s critical you get in the correct vehicle. There have been numerous news reports of people pretending to be ride-sharing drivers and assaulting the unsuspecting victims they pick up. »» Stay aware. Make sure you know the route of travel first. Meaning, map your destination prior to your trip. That way you know the common route so if you start going in directions that don't look familiar or make sense you can address it with the driver and take action. »» Car etiquette. Make sure you sit in the back seat. It provides immediate distance and reactionary gap for if something happens. Once you get in the car and shut the door, before the driver even leaves try to re-open the door. This will let you know if the child safety locks are engaged and let you know if you have the ability to open the door if needed. »» Have someone keep tabs on you. Through the ride-sharing app you can provide family and friends with your driver’s information along with your route and ETA. This information can be lifesaving in the event something does occur on your ride whoever you sent the information to will realize something is wrong when you aren’t at the destination at the time indicated. »» Carry extra protection. If possible, have a tool like the Defense Alert Device (D.A.D.). Not only is it a military grade pepper spray, but with the press of a button, it alerts your selected contacts and anyone within a one-mile radius (who has the free app installed on their phone) that you are in danger and shows your coordinates on a map. It also has a 911 quick dial in the alert for the recipients to call 911 for you. »» When push comes to shove. You have got to be the biggest, loudest problem for the driver if they decide to get handsy or do something else to make you feel uncomfortable. Gouge eyes, kick and punch fiercely, grab objects or people within your reach, and most importantly make a scene using your voice by yelling as loud as possible to draw attention. »» Don’t second guess yourself. If you have a bad feeling, no matter how small it might be, ask to be let out at the next store or public area. If worse comes to worse, immediately dial 911 for help.
