The results were based on 46 key metrics that considered essential family dynamics such as cost of housing, the quality of local school and healthcare systems, and the opportunities for fun and recreation. BROWARD STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS A total of 54 Broward County Public Schools students are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring students in each state taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

SCHOOL NEWS

Peace Education

A

CORNER STONE OF MONTESSORI EDUCATION IS PEACE EDUCATION. One of Small World Montessori’s founding beliefs is based on the principal of peace education and is at the core of our approach to our students and families. “Our diversity is our unity” this is our motto to peace education. Small World Montessori has a long-standing tradition of diversity in all aspects of the organization. From the administration to teaching staff and students we have an incredibly diverse School. Small World Montessori’s population is composed of students from various ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, as well as a variety of family structures. Maria Montessori stated that, “We must lay the foundation for peace ourselves by constructing a social environment, a new world for the child and adolescent, so that their individual consciences may develop.” There are two types of peace that are the central focus of Montessori education. The first is inner peace, and the second is peace outside yourself: peace with others. First, the child has to be focused, calm, and understand their own emotions before they can start getting along with others. They need to be given instructions on how to identify what they’re feeling and how to communicate that in a basic way. For children six and under, this basic communication is enough.

10

PEMBROKEPINESCITYNEWS.COM | OCTOBER 2018

As children get older, in the elementary years, they now find themselves in a position to make peace in a collaborative and nuanced way. It’s not just enough to say “I’m angry” and move on. Elementary aged children are looking for long-term solutions to their conflicts. Peace on the grander scale, in the broader vision of Montessori is world peace. World peace comes from the unity of inner peace and peace with others. The other thing that’s not so obvious about Montessori peace education is that peaceful co-existence doesn’t necessarily mean not making any waves. As Montessorians, we strive to give our students a healthy approach to conflict and strive to provide tools for resolution. We see conflict as opportunity. When we can help children understand the “how” and “why” of peace, then we can better understand the true purpose of Montessori. This means actively understanding your own time, place, and culture, and choosing to be a part of those things in a productive way. It is our belief that Love is universal. As Montessorians we understand that peace and acceptance can only be ascertained if we plant the seeds in the younger generations. It is our fundamental belief that the child is the curriculum, the child is the lesson, the child is the teaching and the learning all in one. It is through the child that

we will build a better world for all. For at the end, Peace is a vocabulary of kindness. Prospective parents are graciously invited to visit the School’s website at SWmontessori.com or to contact the School directly at 954-544-2915. The Head of School welcomes you to tour our facility and experience the difference of an individualized approach to your child’s education. OPEN House: The Montessori School of Miramar will be hosting an open house on Friday October 10, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, all interested families are welcomed to attend. Power of the Patient

A

FTER THREE DECADES OF PRACTICING MEDICINE, DR. ALDO MONTES still believes in the power of patient connection. Alongside Dr. Yeny Andrade in the Weston office, Dr. Montes has built a unique system where the doctors and staff take great care to create an environment of compassion, patience and personalized quality care. “The philosophy of treating each of our patients with a personalized human touch, respect and compassion comes from the genuine caring and appreciation we feel towards our patients for entrusting their care to us,” says Dr. Montes. He and Dr. Andrade also believe in providing continuity of care by offering Dr. Montes’ personal cell phone for their patients to have continuous access during weekends, and after hours. As convenience to his patients, Dr. Montes offers Saturday appointments at his Pembroke Pines location. . Both offices offer same day appointments, complimentary transportation (not only to appointments with our doctors, but also to any additional specialist appointments or tests that need to be arranged) as well as other medical services. Additionally, the practice offers an extra component of care via direct coordination and continuity of care, not only with specialists but as important at the Hospital. Dr. Montes explains “When a patient of ours is hospitalized, from admission to discharge they are followed by our preferred contracted leading Hospitalist and his group. Our Hospitalist dedicate themselves to a small group of Primary Care Physicians which allows for closer coordination and continuity of care”. Drs. Montes and Dr. Andrade are devoted to their patients and profession and are determined to provide every patient with the best clinical outcome possible by combining their years of experience in internal medicine and family practice to achieve a genuine sense of compassion and individualized care. Part of Drs. Montes’ and Andrade’s commitment to providing excellent health care and maximizing health outcomes is to place emphasis on preventative care, along with advocating the benefits of preventative measures. The doctors, along with their team, soundly believe in having an office culture of a satisfied, qualified group that help extend and deliver a high level of patient experience. “To us, our patients always come first,” says Dr. Montes. “We stay conscious of our belief that all we do affects our patients either in a positive or negative way. It is fundamental that our patients receive a high degree of personalized caring care from each member of our team”. We are always looking for ways to improve while maintaining our values to consistently offer our patients a sense of respect, dignity and compassion.” The integration of these ideals and services help enhance the doctors’ pledge to deliver on a philosophy of “patient first” and to maximize the delivery of excellent health

care, health outcomes, and overall patient experience. The process seems to be working. Both the Pines and Weston offices have been awarded the 5-star quality indicator HEDIS rating from Medicare. But it’s the passion for their geriatric specialty which both doctors call, “incredibly rewarding” that pushes them and their team beyond the norm. “I take what I do very seriously,” says Dr. Montes. “I love what I do, it’s the best profession there is. I can’t see myself doing anything but practicing medicine.” In order to help those that are looking to make a change feel more comfortable and better informed, the practice, which is fully bilingual and accepts most insurances, offers what they call “meet and greet” appointments, where those looking to make a switch can come in and tour the offices, meet the staff and doctors, and ask any questions they may have about patient care. For questions or a meet and greet appointment, please call (954) 618-8591 or at the offices during office hours at Pembroke Pines: (954)-433-3114 or Weston (954)-762-6440

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Dear EarthTalk:

WHY ON EARTH WOULD CANS AND OTHER FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS CONTAIN TOXIC BPA THAT CAN MAKE US SICK? IS THERE ANY WAY TO AVOID IT?

I

F YOU LIKE THE OCCASIONAL CAN OF TOMATO SOUP OR DICED PEARS, CHANCES ARE YOU’RE WALKING AROUND with trace amounts of bisphenol A (BPA) in your bloodstream. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 90 percent of us are walking around with trace amounts of this toxic synthetic chemical—commonly used as a constituent component in the epoxy resins lining the inside of cans, boxes and other food storage containers to prevent corrosion and breakages—in our bloodstreams One of a class of so-called “hormone disrupting” or “endocrine mimicking” chemicals, BPA fools the body into thinking it’s the naturally occurring hormone estrogen. The result can be negative effects on brain development, metabolism and the reproductive system. BPA exposure has also been linked to cancer, heart disease and other serious health disorders.

“Evidence suggests the developing fetus and young child are most at risk, but adolescents also appear uniquely vulnerable,” reports the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a leading non-profit research and advocacy group. Of course, the harm isn’t limited to children and teens; adults can suffer the ill effects of a lifetime of bio-accumulated BPA coursing through their veins as well. According to EWG, we can cut down on the amount of BPA we ingest by steering clear of canned and processed foods and replacing them with fresh, frozen and dried options. Get your tomato soup from the hot prepared foods section of your local natural foods market or, better yet, make it yourself from scratch from organic ingredients. And instead of buying diced pears in a can, buy a real pear and dice it up yourself. “For those who cannot avoid foods in BPA-lined cans, rinsing the food in water may help lower the level of BPA in the food,” reports EWG, adding that rinsing cuts back on other unhealthy additives—such as sodium on beans or sweet syrup on fruit—as well. EWG also warns never to heat up food directly in a can: “Transfer it to a stainless-steel pot or pan for stovetop cooking, or microwave in glass – not plastic.” If you’re not sure whether your favorite foods are at risk of containing BPA, you can search EWG’s Food Scores database to find out, and also to look for safer alternatives that don’t contain hormone disruptors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned BPA in baby bottles, sippy cups and infant formula packaging, but the vast majority of us are still at risk. Environmental and health advocates are calling on the agency to ban BPA outright from any packaging materials that come into contact with foods, drinks or water, but so far officials don’t seem inclined to take the now ubiquitous chemical off the market completely. In 2014 and again in 2016, Democrats in Congress floated legislation that would have banned BPA and other potentially dangerous food additives in all food storage containers, but neither bill ever made it out of committee. Without any help from the government, then, it’s up to us to wean ourselves off of BPA by making smart choices about what we buy and what we eat. For more information visit earthtalk.org 16

Walktober Fitness Challenge

P

ARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE FUN DURING THE 2018 WALKTOBER Fitness Challenge at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The challenge, designed to teach the benefits of walking and inspire to make walking a year-round priority, will run October 1 through October 31, 2018. The 2018 Walktober Fitness Challenge is open to all registered SWFP members (membership is free). The goal is to walk 31 minutes a day for the 31 days in October. There will be a Group Walk at the Center every Monday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with a certified fitness Instructor. The instructor will also provide nutritional information and conduct weekly weigh-ins. Community members can walk outside at the SWFP Center, in neighborhoods, parks, on local walking trails, or even indoors at the mall if preferred. And it’s not cheating by walking on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike or participating in one of the Center’s many exercise classes. The important thing is to keep moving and maintain an active lifestyle that will last a lifetime. An October Fitness Log sheet will be provided for participants to enter walking times and weigh-ins. Keeping track of walking is based on the honor system. All participants will get a free prize at the end of the month based on performance and their names will

SPOTLIGHT EVENT

Miramar Gets Ready to Rock

R

OCK AND ROLL LIVES ON THIS NOVEMBER AS ROCKFEST CONCERTS PRESENTS their third annual Rockfest 80s Music Festival at the Miramar Amphitheater. Spanning two days (November 10 and 11), 24 acts will perform across two stages during the festival, which also offers a car show presentation (Muscle Car Alley); Craft Beer Garden; Wine Garden for the wine enthusiast; vendor midway, selling unique goods; and a large selection of food and beverages. The two-day musical festival celebrating 80’s music and pop culture brings a true rock festival back to South Florida, catering to 80’s rock music fans. The 2018 lineup includes feature performances from Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe, Ace Frehley, Cinderella’s Tom Keifer, Night Ranger, Sebastian Bach, Kix and more. Local bands Stellar Revival and Big Rock Band round out the performances. This year marks the first that the festival moves into its new home in the Miramar Amphitheater, having hosted shows previously at Markham Park in Sunrise and CB Smith Park. The move allows both crowds and performers to reap the benefits of the new, state-of-the-art facility as well as bring in fans from across the region. “Being able to reach Dade and Broward County, as well as stretching down to the upper keys, and the short 40-minute drive from the Palm Beach County cities, has proven to be ideal for bringing awareness to the new venue and the City of Miramar,” says Roy Anthony, president of Rockfest Concerts. The amphitheater is the only venue in South Florida with a canopy covering its 3,000 luxury seats, flanked by a general admission lawn that holds an additional 2,000 people. It’s also within one of Broward County’s most popular parks, allowing residents in Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and both Ft. Lauderdale and Miami to enjoy the amphitheater as well as a spectacular water park, two soccer fields, a baseball field, basketball courts, BBQ areas and party pavilions. To purchase tickets visit Rockfest80s.com and Ticketmaster. com. Each price level is available in limited quantities and while supplies last. All tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis. The event is rain or shine.

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

R

ECENTLY A LETTER WAS SENT HOME TO THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER School parents and students from the City of Pembroke Pines Police Chief Dan Giustino reminding them the severity of making threats to do violence in a school. If a student uses any words, verbally, in writing, or via any social media account in a threatening manner that mention, gun violence or any type of violence using a weapon or hurting someone, the police department is taking every threat seriously and is evaluating each threat to determine whether a crime has been committed. I strongly recommend that parents talk to their children and advise them on the life altering consequences these threats can have on their chances of getting accepted into college, joining the military and/or passing a background check for a potential career all because of a prank or joke. Reality has shown us that violence does occur in schools throughout the country, so law enforcement has an obligation to follow through on every threat. So, parents, please make sure your children understand the seriousness and consequences of such threats. One fake threat is one too many. Threats are not jokes. On a happier note, I am pleased to report that the City of Pembroke Pines was the highest ranked city in Florida in the Wallet Hub report on 2018’s Best & Worst Cities to Raise a Family. Pembroke Pines was also the highest ranked city in Florida on Wallet Hub’s Hispanic Entrepreneurs list, ranking #6 out of 182 nationwide. I’m not surprised. We have a great city! We also have a very generous city. For the past 15 years, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center has joined with schools, businesses and residents to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines Community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time very special. Thank you to all who donated. I hope to see everyone at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Memorial Park located at 601 City Center Way by the Charles F. Dodge City Center to honor our country’s veterans past and present. And, I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor,

A

S WE BEGIN THE NEW FISCAL YEAR IN Miramar, I would like to share some information regarding our city budget. As we all manage our own household affairs, it is a big undertaking to strike the right balance of the City’s level of service and how much residents are asked to pay. The city’s budget is approximately $250,000,000 with 875.5 Full Time Equivalent employees staffing 15 departments. The primary purpose for our government is to work on behalf of our residents and corporations to provide, Public Safety, Utilities and other government services. A few highlights of the Fiscal 2018-2019 Budget are as follows: To improve public safety, we will hire more police officers for our Police Department as well as acquire additional Fire Rescue assets to improve response times and patient care. To improve the quality of our parks citywide, the budget provides for improvements to restroom facilities, playing fields and court upgrades. Other provisions addressed in the budget replenishes fund balance and emergency funds, addresses pensions and establishes a Miramar Economic Development Fund to assist the city’s efforts to continue the growth of our
