S JULY COMES TO AN END, ALSO THE GRADUATION PARTIES AND THE SUMMER VACATIONS. WE HAVE HAD an awesome summer enjoying the Soccer World Cup in Russia, an event that happens every 4 years. United States will have the privilege of cohosting this great event in 2026. We look forward to watching some of these games live and in the stadiums where the games will be played. Let's start planning for it! As prom and graduation parties start to fade down, now is the time to get ready for college. By the way congratulations to the Class of 2018 graduates! We know you have worked hard and hope you enjoyed those college years to the max, while you prepare to be the leaders of the future. Please find inside 'Summer Prep Tips for College Applicants' it will be very helpful. Also, Summerfest is still going on in Pembroke Pines, with the Symphony of the Americas, until Aug 9th. Hope you can enjoy one of their concerts right in our back yard, in Pembroke Pines. On the other hand don't forget the 'I love the 90's Tour' that will take place at the Miramar's Amphitheater on August 11th, as part as the Rock Fest series First time here in Miramar. Find more information inside. Take a look at our calendar for other interesting events going on in July and August. A lot of exiting things going on! LOCAL BREWERY TAKES THIRD PLACE IN NATIONWIDE COMPETITION
BROWARD HEALTH BALL RAISES MORE THAN $400K
Davie’s Mack House was one of over 175 breweries to participate in the 2018 Cigar City Brewing Hunahpu's Day Festival in Tampa, FL. This annual beer celebration, hosted outside of Raymond James Stadium, is one of the country's premier craft beer events, with brewers and revelers traveling from across the globe. The festival hands out only six Hunahpu's Day People's Choice Awards, and Mack House took one home … third place in the beer category for their "Big Mack Imperial Stout." "We are extremely proud and excited to receive an award at Hunahpu's Day®, especially considering the class of the participating breweries," said Kyle Hatfield, Mack House’s Head Brewer. At home, the Brew Pub keeps the theme local with flight paddles in the shape of Florida and beers named after local landmarks; Pine Island Pale Ale, 954 IPA and 84 Porter.
The sixth Annual Broward Health Ball, held in mid-May at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, raised $470,000 for all Broward Health hospitals. NBC 6 anchor, Jawan Strader, served as emcee. A special paddle bid helped raise funds for the construction of a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Broward Health Coral Springs. This was the sixth year that the Broward Health Foundation has coordinated this annual event, which has become one of Broward County’s premier fundraisers. More than 500 guests attended the ball, which featured silent and live auctions, dinner, dancing, and live entertainment. “This event is an important fundraiser for our community as every dollar raised goes back to benefit the hospitals that take care of us,” said Bob Birdsong, chairman of the Broward Health Foundation Board of Directors. “It’s gratifying to see the outpouring of support for our community healthcare system and in a setting where everyone is having an enjoyable time.”

Summerfest in Pembroke Pines
T
HE SYMPHONY OF THE AMERICAS 30TH ANNIVERSARY season celebration continues with Summerfest 2018 in Pembroke Pines. This acclaimed summer music festival presents one month of performances throughout Florida and the Americas. The City of Pembroke Pines performance will be held on August 9, 2018 at the Susan B. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts at the River of Grass ArtsPark, located at 17195 Sheridan, at 7 p.m. Refreshing cool waters and the Oscar winning movie Shape of Water are all inspirations for this year’s Symphony of the Americas annual Summerfest – The Shape of Music. Summerfest traditionally features musicians and soloists from acclaimed orchestras throughout Europe, including Mission Chamber Orchestra of Rome, the Hungarian Virtuosi, Orchestra Symphonique du Mont Blanc (France), and others, performing several styles of classical and popular music for strings, all joined in a cultural exchange by principal musicians of our own Symphony of the Americas. Presented in association with Europe’s Musicfor, the festival aligns with their international mission of promot-
ing music, donating musical instruments and their work with young students. Overall, more than 10 different countries are represented on stage at Summerfest concerts. The Artistic Director is Maestro James BrooksBruzzese; the music is of Bach, Handel, Saint-Saens, Mozart, Delibes, Ginastera and the legendary Argentinian, Carlos Gardel. Included also is a commissioned composition by Italian composer in residence, Lorenzo Turchi-Floris, Soloists are the festival’s Concertmaster, Orlando Forte of Cuba, the Symphony of the Americas Principal Oboe, Marco Key-Navarrete and acclaimed organist Tim Brumfield, among others. Tickets are free on first come, first served basis. For more information, please call 954-322-2597. Zoo Miami Foundation Receives Carnival Foundation Grant
Z
OO MIAMI FOUNDATION RECEIVED A $100,000 GRANT FROM CARNIVAL FOUNDATION FOR THE 2017-2018 school year to deliver the Carnival Kids program, a unique standards-based interactive program designed to challenge fourth and fifth grade students to become the next generation of environmental stewards. This program promotes wildlife conservation and is specifically designed to provide opportunities to local deserving, underserved students. The program impacted 788 students in the 2017-2018 school year from John G. Dupuis Elementary, Sweetwater Elementary, Miami Shores Elementary and Florida City Elementary. Through hands-on animal interactions and visits to Zoo Miami and the Everglades, this environmental science program met its goals of: increasing the participants’ science knowledge and their awareness to grow into eco-conscious adults, while supporting the schools’ science curriculums. “We can’t thank Carnival Foundation enough for their trust and belief in Zoo Miami Foundation for more than two decades now. The Carnival Kids program is an excellent program for our community. Together we hope to continue inspiring the love of science and creation for another 20 years and beyond. Thank you for your unwavering leadership and investment in our children’s future,” said Bill Moore, ZMF President & CEO. 1997 marked the beginning of this long and prosperous relationship between Carnival Foundation and Zoo Miami Foundation. Over those past 21 years, Carnival Kids has grown from engaging a total of 100 students per year to over 700 students per year in an environmental education program connecting them to nature. Throughout the span of their long relationship, 10,401 students have been provided with wildlife and environmental conservation instruction.

COVER FEATURE
Unity In Diversity
A
CORNER STONE OF MONTESSORI EDUCATION IS PEACE EDUCATION. Our institution was founded on this belief which is at the core of our approach to our students and families. “Our diversity is our unity” this is our motto to peace education. Small World Montessori has a long-standing tradition of diversity in all aspects of the organization. From the administration to teaching staff and students we have an incredibly diverse School. Small World Montessori has accepted students of all ethnic, religious, cultural, and various household demographics. Maria Montessori stated that, “We must lay the foundation for peace ourselves by constructing a social environment, a new world for the child and adolescent, so that their individual consciences may develop.”
A BREAKDOWN OF PEACE EDUCATION
There are two types of peace that are the central focus of Montessori education. The first is inner peace, and the second is peace outside yourself: peace with others. First, the child has to be focused, calm, and understand their own emotions before they can start getting along with other people. They need to be given instructions on how to identify what they’re feeling and how to communicate that in a basic way. For children six and under, this basic communication is enough. As children get older, in the elementary years, they now find themselves in a position to make peace in a collaborative and nuanced way. It’s not just enough to say “I’m angry” and move on. Elementary aged children are
looking for long-term solutions to their conflicts. Peace on the grander scale, in the broader vision of Montessori is world peace. World peace comes from the unity of inner peace and peace with others. The other thing that’s not so obvious about Montessori peace education is that peaceful co-existence doesn’t necessarily mean not making any waves. We see conflict as opportunity. As Montessorians, we strive to give our students a healthy approach to conflict and strive to provide tools for resolution. When we can help children understand the “how” and “why” of peace, then we can get at the true purpose of Montessori. This means actively understanding your own time, place, and culture, and choosing to be a part of those things in a productive way. It is our belief that Love is universal. As Montessorians we understand that peace and acceptance can only be ascertained if we plant the seeds in the younger generations. It is my fundamental belief that the child is the curriculum, the child is the lesson, the child is the teaching and the learning all in one. It is through the child that
“WE MUST LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR PEACE OURSELVES BY CONSTRUCTING A SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT, A NEW WORLD FOR THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT, SO THAT THEIR INDIVIDUAL CONSCIENCES MAY DEVELOP.” –MARIA MONTESSORI we will build a better world for all. For at the end, Peace is a vocabulary of kindness.

Summer Prep Tips for College Applicants BY AMANDA MAIER
S
UMMER IS FINALLY HERE! SO IT’S TIME TO KICK BACK, RELAX AND ENJOY THE SUNSHINE, RIGHT? WELL, unfortunately that’s not the case for upcoming seniors, such as myself, who are working on getting into the college of their dreams. With summer immersion programs, searching for scholarships, working on college essays, and studying for the SAT/ACT, this summer is turning into a stressful one. But, there is hope. You can take steps to make your summer a little less miserable if you start get organized right now. First, the best way to stay on track with all upcoming deadlines is to make a list. It should include application deadlines for the colleges you want to attend. This is extremely important as you need to know how much time you have to complete everything that is required for your application. You should also add your SAT/ACT test dates to your list. Making a list helps you feel less flustered and makes the process less hectic. Another helpful tip is to start working on your resume as soon as possible. Colleges want to see everything that you have done since freshman year. The best advice I can give is, as soon as you participate in something memorable (such as a volunteer project), write it down on your resume so you don’t forget. If you are still unsure about what college you want to attend, it’s not too late. There is a website called Naviance that most high schools offer which helps match you with colleges that meet your criteria. For example, all you have to do is input your scores, your major and what you are looking for in a college -- such as Greek life, the size of the school, or location -- and Naviance matches you with colleges that fit your profile. It’s worth the time… what the website comes up with may surprise you. In my case, some universities popped up that I hadn’t even heard of, and, once I checked them out, a few of those were added to my list. Planning a tour of prospective colleges is another way to help narrow down a list of schools. Obviously, the sooner you plan a visit, the better as some colleges begin accepting applications as early as October. By visiting different campuses, you can get an idea if it’s the right fit for you. Another thing to prepare for are the interviews. Many competitive universities, such as Wake Forest in North Carolina, highly recommend interviews. Several offer Skype interviews if you can’t make it up there in person. Either way, going on the college website is highly recommended to look into what you need to do so you don’t miss any deadlines. Let’s not forget a very important part of the college search. How are you going to pay for it? Well, many students may have Florida Prepaid or a 529 account, which your parents have set up for you long ago. Needless to say, college is expensive. When you add dorms, food and all the other essentials for living away from home, you might find yourself wondering where you will get the extra money to cover those expenses. That’s where scholarships come in. There is a plethora of scholarship money out there, all you have to do is look for it. Many ask for an essay, or to be nominated by your school in order to apply. Now is the time to get those recommendations from your teachers, and spend a little of your summer sun time, inside, writing those essays and applying for every scholarship you can find on the web. If you play sports, there are several grants you can apply for such as the U.S. Army/Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence which offers a $2,500 grant for those students who are chosen based on athletics, academics and community service. Another is the Wendy’s High School Heisman scholarship which honors students who excel in sports and are leaders in their communities. All you need to do is look for these grants and scholarships on the internet and apply. So, put away the sunscreen and turn on your laptop because while your friends will be scrambling to finish their essays and applications this fall, you can take a deep breath because you sacrificed a few weeks of summer fun for a bright future. BACK TO SCHOOL
Tales From the Fridge… (and Pantry) A SK ANY PARENT WHAT THEY DREAD ABOUT SCHOOL STARTING AND PACKING LUNCHES, PLANNING DINNERS AND DOLING OUT ENDLESS SNACKS will likely be at the top of the list. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? This year we turned to Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Danielle Marks Williamson, MS, RDN, a mom herself, to walk us to through a typical school and day and help all the parents out there make smart and healthy choices for their kids. Here’s what she had to say...
MORNINGS ARE RUSHED AND TOUGH FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS ESPECIALLY. WHAT’S A GOOD, HEALTHY BREAKFAST TO GRAB AND KEEP THEIR ENERGY UP?
Just as the old saying goes, breakfast is certainly the most important meal of the day. It jump starts our metabolism and gives us energy to use throughout the day - especially for your brain! Granola bars are a great choice as long as they have less than 10 grams of sugar per serving and more than two grams of fiber per serving. Hand fruits such as bananas, apples, and oranges are always a great choice. If all else fails, even a glass of milk will do - an eight ounce glass of skim milk has eight grams of protein and 12 grams of carbohydrate - both of which are perfect fuel for the morning.
PARENTS ARE ALWAYS DREADING MAKING LUNCH. WHAT STAPLES CAN WE KEEP ON HAND IN THE PANTRY OR FRIDGE TO MAKE LUNCH PACKING EASIER?
A nice formula for packing a lunch would be: whole grains, protein, fruits and vegetables, and dairy. An easy way to add whole grains is to buy whole wheat or whole grain sandwich bread each week. Purchase healthy proteins such as lean meats (sliced turkey or chicken), beans or 20
PEMBROKEPINESCITYNEWS.COM | JULY 2018
nut butter. Popular fruit favorites are apples, bananas, clementines, raisins, or unsweetened applesauce. Try to avoid purchasing fruit cups preserved with sugar or fruit juice. To incorporate more vegetables, add lettuce, tomato and cucumber to sandwiches or pack a bag of baby carrots. Easy dairy staples include low-fat string cheese or plain yogurt.
KIDS COME HOME FROM SCHOOL FAMISHED, GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE OF A GOOD AFTER-SCHOOL SNACK
Afterschool snacks are an essential part of your child’s diet. The trick is to give your kids food that is packed with nutrients to keep their bellies full until dinner. The best way to do this is to include both fiber and healthy fats. Try to avoid foods high in sugar. Some healthy snack examples include: »» String cheese »» Celery with nut butter and raisins »» Whole grain toast or crackers with smashed avocado or hummus »» Cut up veggies with hummus or 2 tablespoons of your favorite dressing
»» Plain yogurt with fruit and nuts »» Brown rice cakes with nut butter
ACTIVITIES LIKE BASEBALL OR GYMNASTICS CAN OFTEN RUN LATE AT NIGHT. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR HOW TO NAVIGATE KEEPING KIDS FULL AND ENERGIZED WITHOUT GIVING THEM DINNER AT 10 PM?
Proper nutrition goes hand in hand with optimal athletic performance. Kids absolutely need to eat a nutritious meal before practice in order to keep them energized for the physical exertion ahead. This might include food from home, or a healthy option from a restaurant with complex carbohydrates such as brown rice or quinoa. Avoid consuming fried foods, foods high in sugar or sodas, which will not provide sustained energy. If practice ends late, kids can have a light snack before going to bed. This might include a sandwich on whole grain bread, a piece of fruit and some cheese, or a bowl of whole grain cereal with nonfat milk (aim for less than 10 grams of sugar per serving).
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF NUTRITIONAL ADVICE FOR PARENTS?
Make half your child’s plate fruits and vegetables! Fill their plates with a variety of colors, textures and shapes. Teaching your children healthy eating habits from a young age will prevent obesity, and give them a lifelong healthy relationship with food.

EMERGENCY/URGENT SITUATION HOTLINE
As part of everyone’s preparations during hurricane season, saving emergency/urgent situation hotline phone numbers is an important step. The City of Pembroke Pines activates its emergency hotline phone number, 954-565-9571, when its Emergency Operation Center (EOC) goes to a Level 2 – Partial Activation or a Level 1 – Full Activation. This phone number provides information to citizens reporting or asking questions about relevant information on such topics as power outages, mandatory evacuations, shelter information, road closures, closures of any city functions or properties and updated transportation schedules. The City’s website at www. ppines.com, under Pembroke Pines Prepared, provides other important phone numbers and resource links to ensure accurate and helpful information is always available.

It’s extremely important that the City of Pembroke Pines has the most up to date information during hurricane season from the many Homeowners Associations (HOAs) and Condo Associations. Their contact information allows the City to provide accurate and timely information that can then be disseminated to the residents of those developments. The City of Pembroke Pines also wants to make sure that all of its residents and businesses are secure and are undergoing preparations for hurricanes and other emergencies. Per our City Code of Ordinance §32.170, all HOAs must provide current and updated contact information of HOA board members and emergency contacts to the City so that if there were another hurricane with lengthy power outages (such as with Hurricane Wilma), no resident would be blindsided by isolation and the inability to communicate with needed resources. During emergency conditions it is more critical than ever that communities are able to receive advisories, warnings, and updates as they are broadcast by Emergency Operations Management. HOAs do their part on behalf of their residents proving the City with the required contact information which increases communicability with the City. HOAs are encouraged to complete the information online at ppines.com/HOACondoContact.

FROM THE MAYOR
Greetings Miramarians! BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR
I
’M SURE YOU’VE HEARD THAT THE MIAMI Dolphins have visited Miramar in reference to possibly moving their training headquarters here. I recently hosted a town hall meeting to discuss the possibilities and get your thoughts as well as having Dolphins representatives in attendance to share their vision should this happen. It was a successful meeting with approximately 100 people in attendance voicing their support or sharing their concerns about the project. The proposed site is located between Everglades High School and Glades Middle, south of Bass Creek Road, between Dykes Road and Southwest 172 Avenue. There are other cities being considered and we are only in conversation but what a wonderful opportunity for our city should an agreement be approved by the city commission.. I will continue to update you as the discussions continue. Our Youth Advisory Council, led by myself and Police Chief Dexter Williams, have two members who have graduated from High School and will be moving on. This year has been a wonderful time for YAC as they’ve been able to participate in many more activities within our City in addition to representing us during the National

FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES
O
UR STUDENTS WILL BE RETURNING TO SCHOOL NEXT MONTH AFTER THEIR SUMMER break and so I wish everyone a very happy and interesting new school year. We’re very excited about a new program that was recently launched and will begin again with the new school year from our Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Community Risk Reduction personnel for our younger students. It’s a program presented in elementary schools throughout the City to help second graders learn all about fire safety and prevention. Statistics show that the majority of structure fires in homes caused by play were started by males (83 percent). Forty-three percent of the fires were started by a child under age six. Older children were more likely to start outside fires, with two of five (38 percent) of all outside or unclassified fires started by a child between the ages of 10 and 12. Many of these fires are started accidentally due to curiosity. These statistics are startling. This program allows students to advance in their education at a young age, building a strong foundation of knowledge to prevent fire setting. The best interventions involve a combination of child, parental and peer education. Focusing on second graders through this program is a great way to share this important information. Along with classroom presentations and discussions, the team also includes handouts that are given to the teachers for children to share at home. The handouts provide information on instructions for a fire escape plan, a fact sheet on smoke alarms and how to maintain them, firefighter coloring sheets, Sparky the Dog puzzles and mazes, and a Learn Not to Burn review. Let’s also keep an eye out for school zones and make sure we all follow school bus safety. We want everyone to be safe and start the school year on a positive note. Please remember that we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and are taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our doorstep. Be sure to visit our hurricane preparedness information at ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe. On a final note, there are many exciting activities, events and programs taking place throughout the city this month and every month. They are all listed with full information on our city website at ppines.com. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

TRAVEL
A Quick Stop Could End Up Being Your Destination in Morganton, NC (Part 1) BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
I
LOVE THE SAYING “IT’S NOT ABOUT THE DESTINATION, IT’S ABOUT THE JOURNEY.” SO MANY TIMES WE ARE IN such a rush to get to our destination that we miss special places along the way. Such is the case with Morganton, NC. Travelers on their way to Lake Lure or Asheville need to take the time to enjoy some time in Morganton. To be completely honest, I had never heard of this town of 18,000 nestled in the Catawba River Valley, but being the adventurer I am, I signed on. I rolled into town to the sounds of music coming from the town green. I learned that every Friday in May, June and July they have TGIF and everyone comes down, lays out blankets and enjoys the summer nights. I personally would have loved to stay, but I was hungry and I was told JD’s Smokehouse was the place for BBQ. I was not steered wrong; the jalapeno grits were the best grits I’ve ever had. Sorry Mom. Morganton is going through a Renaissance and craft beers are one of the highlights. Sidetracked started as a taproom but morphed into a brewery that keeps 12 taps going with beers named PB&J and Oatmeal Raisin Cookie. Brown Mountain Bottleworks not only has 400 beers to sell but also a great selection of wine and local snacks. What I found so charming was that in each place I went, there was a shelf or table with a selection of board games to play while enjoying your friends and beer. My next day was a whirlwind of fun, beer and amazing food. I spent some time downtown exploring the shops and eateries. There is The Dapper Donut that makes donuts on demand, Oak Hill Iron and Wood, a general store and boutiques, but my favorite was MAD Bookstore where Miss Linda Brown is the guardian of the written word. Rows of books stacked to the ceiling on every topic and genre you can think of
pulls you in. Another favorite place of mine is The Natural Olive. The shop is lined with over 40 olive oils and balsamic vinegars. There is a bar that serves wine and a cozy sitting area where old black and white films play. Because they are not equipped for a kitchen, patrons can bring their own appetizers to enjoy with their wine. I headed to the next town of Valdese for lunch at Old World Baking Company where everything is freshly made. I opted for the kale and cranberry salad. Spectacular! The jelly donuts brought back summer memories of a bakery on Martha’s Vineyard. But what touched me the most on this trip laid inside the walls of this bakery. They have turned one huge wall into a blackboard called “The Dream Wall” where people go to write their dreams. I was so touched standing there and reading everyone’s dreams. Next stop before the State of Origin Beer Festival was South Mountain Distilling Co., a family run business that actually started with the grandfather’s still. We had a tasting that just warmed my soul! The State of Origin Beer Festival had 32 breweries, four food trucks and more than 500 people. If you are a beer lover, this is an event to put on your calendar. From there, I walked to dinner at The root + vine. What a charming place, especially if you can get a table on the patio. I ate the most outstanding octopus and trout while listening to music coming from The Grind Café, a coffee shop across the street that transforms into a bar upstairs at night. The night was winding down as I took my last few sips of wine and glanced across the street at The Cedars House, a sprawling mansion built in 1859. The uplighting around the house and grounds cast an eerie feel and I couldn’t help but think of an old Nancy Drew book. Tomorrow I had hiking on the Greenway and exploring more of Morganton, Nature’s Playground. Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor. She can be reached at debbiemartinez1@mac.com.

KINGSTON MARLEY
“I want to show children that they are never too young to change the world and if we do things together then we can do a lot of good for others.”
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
CHILDREN FOR CHANGE (CHILDREN4CHANGE.COM / @CHILDREN4CHANGEMIAMI)
BACKGROUND
It took just one trip to Jamaica for 10-yearold Kingston Marley to notice a big difference between his life at home and the lives of the children he met there. After spending the summer of 2016 at camp in the Caribbean island nation, Marley came home and asked his mom, Melayna Stephens, if he could collect all his excess “stuff” and send it to the children he had met. But soon it became about more than just toys or sports equipment. “I was really sad when I learned that some kids in Jamaica... don't have shoes or lunch money or the books they need,” says Marley, a student Dr. Henry E. Perrine Academy of the Arts. “Without these things, they can't go to school and get an education and become who they want to be.” Stephens and Marley saw an opportunity for change, and in May of 2017 Children for Change was born.

BEING THE CHANGE
The organization’s first official event took place in September 2017 and focused on back-to-school fundraising for two rural schools in St. Ann, the birthplace of Marley’s grandfather, legendary singer Bob Marley. From there they expanded into additional initiatives that include providing workbooks to students; collecting books and curating library collections for rural schools; holiday toy drives; and the collection of used clothes, educational toys, sports equipment, musical instruments and more. This summer the organization will also launch a summer kindness series to spread kindness throughout the community and a “Helping Hands” distribution of backpacks filled with snacks, clothing, hygiene items, books, art supplies and small toys for children living in homeless shelters in our community.
FAMILY AFFAIR
While Stephens handles what Marley calls “the adult stuff,” Marley has recruited siblings Zedeke and Kalani to work on the project as well and credits an important inspiration in his desire to make the world a better place. “I want to help others just like my grandfather did,” says Marley. “He believed in One Love, which means we should love everyone no matter what color they are or where they came from or what they believe in. And he helped those less fortunate. That's what I want to do too.” His vision includes building Children For Change into a larger organization that will allow kids to get together to brainstorm and implement programs that will help other children. “We can do community projects together and we can help children be kind to each other and stop bullying, and even help children who don't always have food at home.”
BALANCING ACT
While the summer off is giving him the opportunity to focus on the organization, Marley’s school year commitments stack up quite a list. In addition to being part of the school’s drama magnet, he belongs to the 5000 Role Models organization at school and plays two sports. But his own activities only fuel his passion for helping others find theirs. ”It's important to me to make the time for the charity because I think it's important for all children to have a special thing in their life,” he says. “If they want to play basketball then they should have a basketball to play with. If they want to go to school then they should have the books they need to go.”

SAFETY
4 Warning Signs a Family Entertainment Venue May Have Safety Concerns
T
HE FACTS ARE SOBERING, GUT-WRENCHING AND INDISPUTABLE. America’s children are needlessly suffering due to subpar safety standards at family entertainment venues across the board. This as evidenced, for one, by the ceaseless glut of reports on recent amusement and trampoline park injuries. But the problem is far more pervasive than that, as an array of other types of familyoriented centers and activities fraught with downright unacceptable facility flaws and inadequate policies, or a lack of suitable safety measures or policies all-together. Enter family entertainment venue executive Tim Murphy, Chief Executive Officer of Rebounderz Family Entertainment Centers. He’s on a mission to significantly improve safety standards not only within the trampoline park industry (having developed and wholeheartedly enforcing a litany of perfect patents related thereto), but with amusement/theme/activity park, playground, concert hall, and other such family establishments at large. As part of his goal to help keep kids safe from needless injury and death, Murphy is also advising parents on how they can better assess if a facility they are frequenting has safety concerns—warning signs that, not only should the parent heed with caution, but also should be brought to management’s attention for the collective benefit of patrons. Below, Murphy highlights four key red flags that a family entertainment venue needs to be immediately vetted for safety shortcomings: 1.
2.
30
Lack of Proper Management. The number one safety protocol starts with suitable management. Does it appear that the managers are properly trained? Are they engaged with their attention to the facility, employees and its patrons or are they indelibly sequestered “in the back” somewhere? Does there appear to be safety checks and measures in place based on signage, how staffers are managing the floor and regularly checking on equipment and facilities? If the bathrooms are a mess, what might this say about property equipment care and upkeep? If any of these are apparent issues, it’s a major red flag and perhaps the tip of the iceberg among other issues you may find at the location. Lack of Properly Trained Team Members. Floor staffers are a direct reflection of the management’s training style, depth and frequency. Without proper staff training and experience on the grounds, it becomes problematic for everyone. One wrong or missed action by the team member could be detrimental to any family member or even employees. Is the attraction led by trained staff members that are demonstrably and thoroughly engaged in all aspects of the post for which they are responsible? Are they appropriately managing patrons who are engaging with people or equipment improperly? Are they actively ensuring any safety protocols are being adhered to by guests and continuing to check back? Are they demonstrating proper techniques on how to use equipment? Are they picking up litter or otherwise resolving problems PEMBROKEPINESCITYNEWS.COM | JULY 2018

and exuding pride in their role and environment? Are they interacting with customers professionally and with a genuine smile? An absence of these qualities, certainly in combination, is a red flag that attentiveness may be lacking. Improper Equipment and Standards. Does the equipment appear clean, properly installed and in good working condition at the venue? Or, do you see stains on the equipment or floors, rips, tears, and other obvious signs of equipment use and wear and tear? It’s a sign of poor management and maybe even location cash flow issues. Properly run facilities do daily inspections of all equipment and attractions to ensure that guests receive the best possible experience, as well as keep them safe while using the equipment in the space. Additionally, facility rules are paramount—extremely visible parameters of use that will ensure guests know exactly what not to do, also with staffers proactively ensuring every guest follows these rules. Ensuring there’s no question about what to do, or not to do, helps minimize the opportunity for injury, but also serves as a visual cue for the guest to follow to help aid in preventing injury. Finally, if the venue serves food, is the equipment (vending machines, counters, tables, ice cream machines, restrooms, etc.) clean, appear to be in good working order, and has received a formal state inspection posted? If the location serves alcohol, is the business properly licensed by the city, county and state? Cleanliness, good equipment operation and proper inspection signage gives patrons a good indication of the condition of the facility and how well both the staff and management is performing.
4.
Improper Facility and Safety Standards. Firstly and highly fundamentally, warning and rules signs should always be displayed, both in the activity areas, at each attraction, and in the restrooms. If there is few or entirely absent signage in this regard, safety is a concern. This is a baseline standard and if it’s subpar it’s indicative that safety isn’t a priority for the location. Also, are team members verbally instructing guests on how to use equipment, and intervening when that is not the case? Or are they chatting amongst themselves letting patrons run amuck? Also, when applicable, are smaller kids segregated from more aggressive teenagers and adults, which can help prevent injuries to younger guests? And, do employee uniforms aptly differentiate team members from guests? This allows all guests to know who is in control of the facility and who to talk to, and as well as who is the authority at each attraction. As well, does the facility avail First Aid Kits (including defibrillators), team member headsets and PA systems that also help facilitate a safe and properly supervised environment? If management has taken care of all standards of safety, then all guests should have “maximum” fun with little safety concerns.
"Ultimately, ongoing formal and informal inspections, staff and management training, safety videos, ongoing personnel evaluations and other safeguards are absolutely fundamental measures that can help a facility quickly identify and rectify structural and policy issues and ensure employees are aptly educated for the type venue at hand,” Murphy underscores. “Not only will this mitigate the chance of injury, but also help owners avoid expensive liability lawsuits.”
