Apollo, George Balanchine’s first great masterwork, literally transformed the art of 20th-century ballet. With its neoclassical approach to dance, this narrative ballet follows the young god of music, beauty and light, and three muses. Concerto DSCH, “dances pour forth in a continuous stream of galvanizing excitement and affectionate intimacy.” The haunting, gripping work culminates with the appearance of a dark figure of Death, who claims the life of a woman in white as the horrified onlookers swirl about her upraised body. THE PHILANTHROPIST THE PHILANTHROPIST A PERSON WHO SEEKS TO PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF OTHERS, ESPECIALLY BY THE GENEROUS DONATION OF MONEY TO GOOD CAUSES.
SAVING THE FORGOTTEN BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
DORCASWILCOX CEO, MIAMI BRIDGE, MIAMIBRIDGE.ORG
A FAMILY LEGACY
For Miami Bridge CEO Dorcas Wilcox, community service runs deep in her blood. Growing up, Wilcox’s schoolteacher mother (alongside her nine children) poured her own time and energy into volunteer positions at organizations around her community, efforts that eventually yielded enough scholarships and donations to send Wilcox and seven of her siblings to college. And though education was top of mind for her mother, Wilcox was even more inspired by the lasting legacy that she saw built after her mother’s death. “As I watched hundreds of people pay their respects and tributes for her humanitarian efforts to more than 20 organizations, the epiphany of my passion to serve others and pay it forward became crystal clear,” she says.
BUILDING A BRIDGE
Wilcox first learned of Miami Bridge Youth and Family Services during her time in the public school system, eventually joining the organization as a non-residential counselor and steadily climbing the ranks before accepting the CEO role in 2015. “Accepting the CEO’s position gave me the latitude to develop an awesome team of smart, passionate staff members who want to serve and truly care about promoting youth development and strengthening and supporting families to enable children to actualize their full potential to become productive community members,” she says. Since then, Wilcox has worked hard to continue to grow and evolve organization partnerships with local law enforcement, government and donors as well as bring a familial atmosphere to both residents and staff under her watch. “Today, we enjoy an 85 percent rating with the youth who depart our programs, and an 89 percent rating within the community, according to our satisfaction surveys. While we still have plenty of work to do, we are well on our way.”
A MISSING PIECE
Calling them the “invisible” population, Wilcox says the teenagers who come to Miami Bridge are often ignored, as much funding is focused on younger children, babies and toddlers. “I do not believe the community has a real understanding of the legalities, struggles and enormous expenses involved in caring for 800+ challenging teenagers and their families every year,” says Wilcox, who explains that though the organization serves youth as young as six via outreach, they house children between the ages of 10-17 within their shelters, an age range that can often be incredibly challenging. “Not only are teenagers in our community dealing with the effects of puberty, but now they must also contend with social media, school and cyber bullying, school shootings, and human sex trafficking, among other societal ills,” she says. “When a youth comes into our shelter, we must have educated and trained counselors prepared to deal with all of the above, which has usually taken a toll on the youth’s ego and self-esteem.”
LEADING THE WAY
Among other initiatives under her tenure, Wilcox and her management team have partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to work with hundreds of truant youth who are now attending school and put together a staff who provide individual and family counseling and case management to more than 800 youth and their families. They are also looking into expanding their services to include additional programming that will focus on youth in crisis, foster care youth and the LGBT community among others, as well as continued outreach for those who may need a safe space to go after school and the creation of private rooms for hard-to-place youth who may need a longer stay in a stable, caring environment. Says Wilcox, “Our contention is that ALL children (including teenagers) can flourish with love, attention and the fulfillment of basic needs... and we prove it every day.”

4 Ways Students Can Parlay Internships Into Jobs
T
HE JOB MARKET APPEARS A BIT MORE promising for soon-to-be college graduates than it has been for most of this decade. Just four years ago, CNN Money reported that 260,000 college grads held minimum-wage jobs. Barely 25 percent had a job related to their college major. But this year, the National Association of Colleges and Employers projects that U.S. companies will hire 4 percent more new college graduates than they did from the Class of 2017. Yet with more optimistic employment prospects, there’s still stiff competition for those first “real” jobs. Who stands the best chance of getting them? Several studies show that college internships make a significant difference. According to Gallup, for example, recent graduates who had an internship in college were more than twice as likely to be hired for a good, career-related job immediately after graduation. “The solution for college students is to increase job experience while still in school, and that means obtaining a hands-on internship every summer while in college,” says Matthew Stewart, co-founder of College Works Painting, which provides business experience for thousands of college students each year. “Unless you graduate college with a significant amount of real-world job experience, finding a job will be incredibly difficult.” Stewart gives
14
college students four tips on maximizing their college internship in order to improve their post-grad job prospects: »» Find an internship that challenges you. An internship experience that will be meaningful on a resume should make demands of the student, Stewart says. Ideally, they’re getting a preview of their chosen profession and an idea of the skills they’ll need to succeed. “College students should be looking for experiences that will challenge them,” Stewart says. “When they get out of school they will be competing with thousands of other
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | April 2018
graduates. They need to ask themselves, ‘Will the internship offer real experience that will separate me from my peers?’” »» Treat your internship like a career. “The easiest way to treat your student job like a career is to ask your boss to mentor you,” Stewart says. “Under the mentorship of your supervisor, you can expand your basic job functions.” »» Be proactive, take initiative. Going above and beyond in your internship will set the foundation for your career. “You’ll gain confidence by taking initiative, which is a core skill in the business world,” Stewart says. “It’s important to set goals and have a plan of action around those goals.” »» Seek promotion opportunities. “Again, the mentor factor comes in,” Stewart says. “Build a strong relationship with your mentor, and let him or her know you are eager for more responsibility and that you’re up for the challenge. Always check the company job board.” “College is not the time to relax,” Stewart says. “You need to treat college and an internship seriously; it’s your future. College consists of three summers of internships, and by the fourth summer students should have what it takes to find a career.”

SCHOOL NEWS
In the Wake of A Tragedy BY NICOLE MARKUS
O
N FEBRUARY 14, 2018, NIKOLAS CRUZ WALKED INTO MARJORY Stoneman Douglas High School with an AR-15. He was wearing a Douglas uniform, and a managed to enter the school unnoticed, despite the school’s request for the police to be called if he was seen on campus. Then, in the span of only six minutes, he shot and killed seventeen people and injured fourteen others. Because of the chaos, Cruz was able to slip silently out of the school. It took eighty minutes from the time of the first 911 call to locate him and bring him into custody. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High is located exactly 50 minutes from Miami Palmetto Senior High School. The reaction from Palmetto students to Cruz’s actions was agony, outrage, paranoia, and extreme concern. Many wondered what was standing in the way of a shooting of the same magnitude at Palmetto. The two high schools are similar in size, demographic, and location. After the fog cleared, students rallied to protest against gun violence, for gun control, and for school safety initiatives. Student leaders have risen around the school to demand safety precautions be taken, and to help the survivors of the shooting. Immediately after the shooting, I organized an effort to collect letters of support for the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. Hundreds of Palmetto students participated, and many of the letters were placed on a large banner that was delivered to Parkland. My organization, SharingWear.org, also launched a new t-shirt to support the Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund, raising more than $400 to date. In addition, I teamed up with my fellow Panther Anais Roatta to create a new organization, Students Against Gun Violence. The organization has a four part mission: supporting victims of gun violence, contacting legislators and school administrators to make student opinions on gun laws and safety programs known, registering students to vote and developing school safety initiatives. Our first effort has been a large letter-writing campaign, which is taking place in partnership with the Social Studies Honor Society. Students have written more than 500 letters to school board members, state representatives, and senators. “The letter writing campaign is a way to voice our opinions and produce change,” explains Anais. “By writing to our state representatives and legislators I truly believe we can change the minds of the people we have elected and work to achieve the safety that every student deserves.” On March 14, Palmetto Senior students participated in the nationwide walkout. We formed a giant message on the school field and stood for 17 minutes of silence to honor the 17 victims in Parkland. Some are worried that the outrage surrounding this shooting and others in the country will die down soon. In the wake of a tragedy, the cycle of events is normally the same. We mourn, we cry, we forget. What about the Parkland shooting was different? What about the Parkland shooting made people so angry that sitting back down was impossible? The difference is the students. Students, not just at Palmetto, but at schools around the United States, are determined to change the narrative of education. Here at Palmetto, students have promised to continue the fight, and to make sure no one forgets. Nicole Markus is a freshman at Palmetto Senior High School and the founder of sharingwear.org. Take the Pledge!
THE CITY OF MIRAMAR IS PARTICIPATING IN THE WYLAND NATIONAL MAYOR’S CHALLENGE FOR WATER CONSERVATION
T
HE MONTH OF APRIL IS RECOGNIZED IN FLORIDA AS WATER Conservation Month. Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam is joining mayors across the country in asking residents to make a long term commitment to manage water resources more wisely. The Challenge is a friendly competition among cities across the U.S. to see which can be the most “water wise” beginning April 1 through April 30. “It is easy to take water for granted, especially in a region surrounded by water,” said Messam. “The City of Miramar, Florida has been a leader in water conservation in South Florida because we understand that there is an ever-growing demand on a limited resource -- fresh water. Conserving water is critical as a drought management strategy and to meet long-term water needs for Miramar. Let’s continue to lead the way by answering this challenge with thousands of pledges.” Last year, residents from more than 4,800 cities in all 50 U.S. states pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by 2.2 billion gallons, reduce waste sent to landfills by 52 million pounds, and prevent more than 114,000 pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds. The Challenge goes beyond drought as a factor in water conservation and looks at the ways our water use will affect the future of our communities, from how we grow food to reducing polluted runoff. “Together we can make significant positive impacts. I ask every Miramar resident, visitor, student, employee and business to take the pledge and show why It’s Right Here in Miramar,” said Messam. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the Challenge in their population category are entered into drawings for hundreds of eco-friendly prizes, including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment and the Grand Prize for one lucky participant, $5,000 toward home utilities for a year. The Challenge

also gives residents a chance to nominate a deserving charity in their City that would benefit from receiving a 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, and features additional resources for residents to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water and energy resource issues to cost-saving tips at home. To participate, enter online at mywaterpledge.com where residents can make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of the City of Miramar.

The Essentials W
HETHER YOU’RE HEADING TO DAY CAMP OR SLEEPAWAY CAMP, the one thing that all camps have in common is the general amount of STUFF it requires. We turned to Leslie Matus, the South Florida rep for camp go-to Camp Stuff 4 Less, for a quick primer on the who, what and wear of summer camp 2018. Here’s what’s on the list…
BASICS WITH A TWIST
Campers leaving home do well to bring an egg crate to make bunk mattresses a little more comfortable, says Matus, as well as a good flashlight, fun stationery and a stationery pouch to keep letters, pens and stamps organized. Day campers can keep hydrated and cool with a water bottle emblazoned with their name, camp name or the name of their favorite sports team. And don’t forget the ever-popular misting fan.
20
PERSONALIZED EVERYTHING
A name or monogram makes everything a little more fun for campers, says Matus. Also popular? Showing camp spirit by putting the camp name on everything from a phone case to stickers. Also available are hats, headbands, t-shirts and shorts. But Matus says to keep in mind that custom orders can take up to four-to-five weeks depending on the order so start looking and place your orders early.
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | April 2018
SHOWER POWER
Also at the top of the list are Showaflops, soft, ultra cushioned flip-flops with an antimicrobial surface that protects against fungus, germs and bacteria, drainage holes and grooved soles that keep feet from slipping on wet surfaces. The flops come in a variety of eclectic patterns from stars to splatter paint to camo and faux marble.
NEW AND NOTABLE
New on the roster are magic sequin reversible sequin items including pillows, journals, pouches and more. Comfy and lightweight, sleep sacs have also taken off. The machinewashable, zipperless sleeping bags are perfect for cool nights of outdoor activities or AC-chilled movie marathons at home.
For more information or to order contact Leslie Matus at sales@campstuff4less.

ID YOU KNOW THAT IT IS ILLEGAL FOR ANY FLORIDA City to pass a law regulating firearms in any capacity? Many would think that their local elected officials would be in position to take sensible and constitutionally legal action to put safeguards in place to protect the public to lessen the prospects of mass shootings like what happened in Parkland. Unfortunately, Florida Statutes not only preempt Miramar from passing local laws but it punishes local officials by even drafting such laws personally. In response to this restriction, I sponsored legislation to have the City of Miramar join the Cities of Weston, Coral Gables, Pompano Beach, Miami Beach and 5 other cities in filing a lawsuit to challenge the penalty provisions of Section 790.33 of the Florida Statutes that prohibits elected officials from passing local laws that regulate firearms by removing them from office with no hearing and a civil fine of up to $5,000. This onerous and punitive law was pushed through the Florida Legislature in 2011 by the National Rifle Association to chill mayors and other elected officials from even talking about passing constitutionally allowed gun regulations at the local level. No other preemption in the state of Florida has this overreach.

This lawsuit does not seek to take away or infringe upon the 2nd Amendment. It does however seek to allow cities to explore all constitutional options to keep our communities safe like control assault style weapons from being allowed in our parks and government buildings. After the tragedy in Parkland, I received many emails and calls from residents asking what would we do as a city do to prevent that very act from happening in our city. Today, unfortunately, there is little we can do due to the current preemption laws by the State of Florida. However, I cannot look into the eyes of our children and our residents and allow the status quo to not be challenged. That is why the City Commission has unanimously authorized this lawsuit to ensure your City Commission is empowered to respond to your demands for us to do something. #EnoughisEnough Yours in Service,
Wayne Messam Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES
M
AY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY BUSY MONTH FOR us. There are many activities, events and programs offered, and we begin to really gear up for our hurricane preparedness with hurricane season right around the corner. We encourage residents and businesses throughout the city to take advantage of our educational videos and information on our social media, website, television stations, and through our newspaper City Connect regarding what to do before, during and after a storm. Knowledge is power. Hurricane Irma taught us last year that being prepared and keeping the lines of communication open and accurate is critical for all Floridians with hurricanes being so much a part of our lives. Especially take time during ‘National Hurricane Preparedness Week,’ May 6 – 12, to learn more about being as prepared as possible for future hurricanes. Be sure to also mark your calendars for the Mayor’s Third Annual Chess Challenge being held on May 19 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club Nineteen Restaurant, located at 10500 Taft Street. This is the last chess challenge being held throughout Broward County as part of a free and friendly series of chess meetups created to draw attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in our community. Chess players of all ages and skills are welcome to play chess with me, City Commissioners, Broward County officials, community leaders and other players at this monthly traveling challenge. Instructors are on hand to help those new to the game. All across the country, including here in Pembroke Pines, children of all ages will also be celebrating the 8th Annual National Kids to Parks Day on May 19, 2018. There will be free and fun activities at several park locations throughout Pembroke Pines from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check our City website at ppines.com for information on free tennis clinics and free swimming. And, I’d also like to invite everyone to the City’s Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Donnith H. Fletcher Art and Culture Center, located at 7900 Johnson Street. I understand that Memorial Day may symbolize the state of Summer for many, however, please remember that it really is a very special day set aside to honor all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard will present colors; and veterans, community leaders, and special guests will join together to pay tribute and take part in a wreath placing ceremony. As always be safe and I hope you enjoy all that our great City of Pembroke Pines has to offer. Be sure to follow and “like” our social media (Pines Media on Instagram; City of Pembroke Pines on Facebook; and @City_PPines on Twitter) so you are up to date on all that is happening. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor,
Frank C. Ortis Frank C. Ortis Mayor of Pembroke Pimes

Cooper’s Hawk at Pines City Center’s exterior was designed to harmonize with the South Florida aesthetic, with design elements including light tones and a “living wall” with beautiful plants and flowers. The restaurant has the capacity to accommodate 250 guests; the main indoor dining space will have seating for 214 guests, while a fully covered outdoor patio will accommodate an additional 36. There will also be two private barrel rooms, which will seat 22 guests each and are divided by a sliding wall to create one large private dining room to seat a total of 44. “The Pembroke Pines location has a spacious yet warm atmosphere using de-saturated wood tones and hints of bold accents in the artwork,” said Stacey Bouwman, Senior Designer of Aria Group. “There is an even mixture of rustic and refined elements to make the space both comfortable and inviting, adding an authentic Cooper’s Hawk experience in Pembroke Pines.” In addition to its innovative dining experience, the Cooper’s Hawk Winery in Woodridge, IL, produces over five million bottles per year and is currently the 34th largest winery in the United States. Cooper’s Hawk blends, ferments and ages wine from some of the most prestigious vineyards across the globe to create the award-winning wine.

Often, people who smoke tend to rely on cigarettes to ease their anxiety. However, nicotine found in cigarettes affects your brain, including your mood. But nicotine also ramps up blood pressure and heart rate, two physical symptoms that can mirror anxiety. The relief a smoker feels is temporary and will likely return and cause an even greater risk of anxiety symptoms. Studies have found that those who quit smoking for more than two weeks had lower anxiety levels than when they were smoking regularly.

MEDICATIONS
Decongestants, such as phenylephrine, including Sudafed PE can bring on symptoms of anxiety or panic. Some ADHD medications also list anxiety or nervousness as a possible side effect. These medications include Adderall, Ritalin, and Strattera to name a few. Some birth control pills can contribute to feelings of emotional disturbance including depression and anxiety. Asthma medications can cause symptoms of anxiety for some patients. The National Institute of Health reports that the use of bronchodilators can lead to feelings of anxiety and nervousness. If you are prone to anxiety, make your doctor aware of this to be sure that both OTC meds and prescriptions will not exacerbate your symptoms.
ALCOHOL
Anxiety and alcohol use are often connected. People often drink to relax and reduce anxiety, and in some instances, chronic alcohol abuse can lead to anxiety. With both alcohol use and anxiety being so prevalent in the US, it’s no surprise that the two are often linked. Drinking alcohol can influence the brain chemistry and change the levels of serotonin. Alcohol can affect your mood and decrease the “feel good” chemical in your brain increasing feelings of anxiety and depression. Long-term heavy drinkers may be exposed to a higher risk of anxiety.
HORMONAL ACTIVITY
Hormones are the messengers to the brain and when your body is under stress due to internal factors such as the menstrual cycle, this can lead to mood changes and irritability. Adrenal issues — imbalances in the body's stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, and the precursor hormone DHEA — can cause a variety of symptoms that seem to be mental health-related, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Other hormones such as estrogen, testosterone and thyroid can all affect anxiety. If you feel hormones may be the culprit of your anxiety, consult your internist who can do a full blood workup.

SKIPPING MEALS

rcohen@murphybusiness.com www.flabiz4sale.com
The jitters, shakes, and irregular heart rhythm one might get after a dose of caffeine can feel an awful lot like a panic attack, especially if you are already susceptible. That's because caffeine stimulates your "fight or flight" response, tricking the body into feeling like it’s being chased by a lion even when there is no danger present. If caffeine makes you anxious switch to decaf coffee, avoid energy drinks and be wary of medications like Midol which can contain a hefty dose of caffeine as an active ingredient.
Experience Integrity Dedication
Skipping meals can affect your brain, which can lead to a drop in serotonin levels creating symptoms of anxiety. This can cause, mood swings, stress, fatigue and unsteady blood sugar levels. As a result, one might experience shakiness, dizziness, confusion, and difficulty speaking. Prevent these blood sugar swings by eating frequent small meals and keeping snacks on hand.
