UR SCHOOLS ARE REOPENING; SUMMER IS COMING TO AN END. Hope everyone had a great time with their families and friends. Right before school starts I usually take my kids to the dentist and pediatrician for their yearly checkups and then I take care of myself by doing the same. On page 7 we have article on OB/GYN Dr. Monica Daniel, she is a very experienced Doctor in Silver Lakes. If you need a check up keep her in mind. At this time of the year our philanthropist community gets really busy too, on page 10 we have the list of those that have made a difference in the lives of many, thank you all for helping. We are very proud also of Cycle Bar, they have been around for a year , just a fun place to hangout, have fun and get fit! Do you have OCD or now someone who has? You should read about it on Page 20, it might change your life. Great news, Hawks Cay Resort is opening after a year of rebuilding from Hurricane Irma. We love taking long drives to the Keys, it feels like going on vacation for a day.

GRANDPARENTS DAY BREAKFAST A Grandparents Day breakfast will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 8:30 a.m., sponsored by United Healthcare at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. The idea of having a Grandparents Day began in 1970 when a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. McQuade worked hard to educate people about the important contributions senior citizens made and the contributions that they would be willing to make if asked. She also encouraged people to adopt a grandparent, not for one day a year and not for material giving, but for a lifetime of experience. Through her efforts and those on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign grew. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Later that year, Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. However, it wasn’t until 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, that the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter.

Peace Education
A
CORNER STONE OF MONTESSORI EDUCATION IS PEACE EDUCATION. One of Small World Montessori’s founding beliefs is based on the principal of peace education and is at the core of our approach to our students and families. “Our diversity is our unity” this is our motto to peace education. Small World Montessori has a long-standing tradition of diversity in all aspects of the organization. From the administration to teaching staff and students we have an incredibly diverse School. Small World Montessori’s population is composed of students from various ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, as well as a variety of family structures. Maria Montessori stated that, “We must lay the foundation for peace ourselves by constructing a social environment, a new world for the child and adolescent, so that their individual consciences may develop.” There are two types of peace that are the central focus of Montessori education. The first is inner peace, and the second is peace outside yourself: peace with others. First, the child has to be focused, calm, and understand their own emotions before they can start getting along with others. They need to be given instructions on how to identify what they’re feeling and how to communicate that in a basic way. For children six and under, this basic communication is enough.
As children get older, in the elementary years, they now find themselves in a position to make peace in a collaborative and nuanced way. It’s not just enough to say “I’m angry” and move on. Elementary aged children are looking for long-term solutions to their conflicts. Peace on the grander scale, in the broader vision of Montessori is world peace. World peace comes from the unity of inner peace and peace with others. The other thing that’s not so obvious about Montessori peace education is that peaceful co-existence doesn’t necessarily mean not making any waves. As Montessorians, we strive to give our students a healthy approach to conflict and strive to provide tools for resolution. We see conflict as opportunity. When we can help children understand the “how” and “why” of peace, then we can better understand the true purpose of Montessori. This means actively understanding your own time, place, and culture, and choosing to be a part of those things in a productive way. It is our belief that Love is universal. As Montessorians we understand that peace and acceptance can only be ascertained if we plant the seeds in the younger generations. It is our fundamental belief that the child is the curriculum, the child is the lesson, the child is the teaching and the learning all in one. It is through the child that

we will build a better world for all. For at the end, Peace is a vocabulary of kindness. Prospective parents are graciously invited to visit the School’s website at SWmontessori.com or to contact the School directly at 954-544-2915. The Head of School welcomes you to tour our facility and experience the difference of an individualized approach to your child’s education. OPEN House: The Montessori School of Miramar will be hosting an open house on Friday August 10, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, all interested families are welcomed to attend. CATCHING UP WITH…
SUZANNE WELLS CO-OWNER, CYCLEBAR PEMBROKE PINES
A
FTER A YEAR IN BUSINESS, CYCLEBAR PEMBROKE PINES HAS FOUND THEIR GROOVE… AND they’re ready to let everyone know. The indoor cycling studio, owned by Pines resident Suzanne Wells, her husband Bryn, his brother Mark and Mark’s wife, Jean, is drawing riders from around South Florida thanks to their tiered “cycle theater” set up, custom bikes, flat-screen TVs, personal data monitors and state-of-the-art audio, video and lighting technology. But it's Wells’ knowledge and enthusiasm (her own medical issues initially ignited her passion for exercise) that has kept them on their game. We sat down with Wells on the eve of their anniversary month to talk family dynamics, cycling friendships and, of course, motivation. “I’ve always been an enforcer to get people to work out,” says Wells. “I have people who haven’t worked out in years start and end up coming five days a week because they see results. We aren't just running a business, we are impacting people’s lives.”
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SURPRISING THING ABOUT OWNING CYCLEBAR?
The most surprising thing about owning CycleBar has been watching friendships form among all of the riders and staff. It's been amazing to see the community come together and form friendships and support one another on their fitness journey. Our riders meet up here at the studio and also enjoy doing things together outside the studio. We love to see that happen and also love joining them out around town.
HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY RESPONDED TO THE STUDIO?
The community has been so supportive. The feedback we get from them is awesome! We love that they feel welcome and at home here. We’ve also been able to meet so many interesting people because of the studio. What touches us the most is watching our riders transform themselves mentally and physically; we’ve had riders who have lost more than 25 pounds.
WHAT’S A MEMORABLE MOMENT YOU’VE HAD THIS YEAR WITH A CLIENT?
I remember one rider who rode for the first time. She had to sit in the back corner and didn't want to see herself in the mirror. After a couple weeks, she moved to the second row and encouraged her husband to join her. Now, she is 25 pounds lighter and sits right up front. Her husband enjoys it as well and they have both become healthier together. We have so many stories like that and it really touches us to be a small part of everyone's day.
YOU WORK CLOSELY WITH FAMILY. HOW HAS THAT BEEN AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM EACH OTHER DURING THIS PAST YEAR?
Working with family has been great! We each have our strengths. Luckily we all get along and this experience has taught us a lot about one another. With four different views we have learned who is good at what, so we divide and conquer!
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE ANNIVERSARY?
Our anniversary weekend will be September 20-23 and all rides that weekend will be free, so people who haven't tried us out yet can do it all weekend. We will have Glow Rides, DJ Rides, giveaways, a special ride for our Founders and lots more! It will be a great celebration. Pembroke Pines is a great city to live in and we love that we can have an impact on the town in a positive way. We are really looking forward to our anniversary and meeting new riders. 14

F
LORIDABRAN EXPRESS SERVICE THE UNDERTAKINGS AND the good stories of Colombians who launch a company are worth highlighting. FLORIDABRAN EXPRESS SERVICE is an agency that is conquering Latinos in Florida for their excellent service and speed when delivering their packages. DAYANA BRAN is 'La Paisa"(someone born in Medellin, Colombia) that created her own brand and company at age 26 with the objective of developing her ideas, turning them into a service for the community. Daughter of a conservative family in Medellin. Her story is a sway of emotions. Initially she had several failures with the
attempt of virtual stores in which she gathered with other partners. However, she identified that part of those failures were because she sold products that had no cultural connection with the clients she wanted to reach. In addition to that, in her own home town in Medellin they already sold the products of her previous virtual store of vitamins. So she began with firm steps this new company. 'La Paisa' has plans to conquer new territories such as Colombia and Mexico. The objective is to be able to send cargo to all of Latin America and Europe. FLORIDABRAN EXPRESS SERVICE currently distributes in 13 destinations and has money transfers to more than 17 countries

LEASE DON’T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN, SEPTEMBER 10TH STARTS THE PEAK OF hurricane season. A Town Hall Meeting on Hurricane Preparedness was held at the beginning of this year’s season to share informational materials and videos, as well as answer resident’s questions. A video of the meeting can be viewed on the city’s YouTube page at Pembroke Pines Media. Pembroke Pines believes in empowering residents by providing extensive and comprehensive information about hurricane preparedness and what to do during and after a storm throughout Pembroke Pines by being Pembroke Pines Prepared at ppines.com/hurricane; social media via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Next Door; through Pines Media TV and YouTube. There are videos, brochures, flyers, graphics, resource links and contacts which will help everyone remain safe, informed and confident in preparations for any approaching storm. The City of Pembroke Pines does all in its power to keep everyone safe. With each storm we learn new and better ways to keep our city running smoothly, and our residents informed and confident in their preparation. If you’d not yet created your hurricane plan or need to add to your hurricane supplies, I urge you to do it now. We’re here for you, Pembroke Pines. I would also like to invite everyone to attend a Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony, September 11, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the City Center Memorial, located at 601 City Center Way, immediately west of the Charles F. Dodge City Center City Hall. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards. It will also include guest speakers, community leaders, and patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. Please mark your calendars and spread the word on the 4th Annual Veterans Employment Expo for United States Military Veterans. It will take place on October 2, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus at 301 NW 103 Ave. The event will open to the public at noon. Throughout the Expo, veterans have an opportunity to network with veteran-friendly employers, as well as attend mini - workshops on resume writing and interviewing techniques. The 4th Annual Veterans Employment Expo is an extension of the City of Pembroke Pines Re-Energize and Re-Connect Initiative, whose goal is to provide resources and housing at the R & R Village Veterans Housing, located on the Howard C. Forman Services Campus, for Active and Honorably Discharged Members of the military. For employers interested in participating in this 2018 Veterans Employment Expo to recruit and screen for potential veteran employees, please contact Silvia A. Aguilar, Community Services Administrator, at 954-450-6888 or via email saguilar@ppines. com. There are also sponsorship opportunities for those wishing to assist with programming for our veterans. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

CHANGING THE PERCEPTION BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
#TEARINGOCDAPART; COMPULSIONCONTROL.COM
BACKGROUND
Drawing from her own personal experiences, Broward-native Dr. Ilisa Kaufman followed her passion for helping others into a career a psychologist. “I went through personal struggles with loss and it really inspired me to want to work with others,” says Kaufman, who felt her career calling even as a teen. Today, the mom of three works with patients of all ages across South Florida who struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or an obsessive compulsive-related disorder. “I saw how cruel this disorder can be; how the sufferers are held prisoners in their own minds and are not able to break free,” says Kaufman. “The idea of helping unlock them felt so necessary.” Her work with those patients is what spurred Kaufman to create the “Tear OCD Apart” campaign, bringing awareness to both the disease and it’s treatment.
ABOUT ERP
DR. ILISA
KAUFMAN 20
PEMBROKEPINESCITYNEWS.COM | AUGUST 2018
In her practice, Kaufman employs a therapy known as ERP or Exposure and Response Prevention. “I started working with the OCD population ten years ago and I realized that exposure response prevention is the key to getting better,” she says. “That’s when I became really interested in ERP.” In ERP, the therapist will actually separate the obsession from the compulsion. For instance, a compulsive hand washer will touch something they see as “dirty” with the therapist there to prevent them from moving on to the compulsion (hand-washing). “When you prevent a compulsion, over time the obsession gets better,” says Kaufman. “Anxiety increases but then it will come back down so they can learn to function without the compulsion. You’re retraining your brain.”
TEARING APART OCD
As a dedicated advocate for OCD patient s, Kaufman had been brainstorming ways to bring awareness to the cause when she was struck by the idea of drawing from her own therapies. From there, Kaufman created the Tear OCD Apart campaign, designing two bracelets, one with an “O” and there other with “CD.” “I was walking around my neighborhood and I was thinking of how I could use something to symbolize OCD,” she says. “I wanted to create a physical symbol that would represent the need to tear apart the obsessions from the compulsions. The whole idea came to me. You put the O on one wrist and the C on the other. When you are feeling stuck together, you can break up the idea.”
LOOKING AHEAD
After launching the bracelets on her Instagram page (@ilisakaufman), Kaufman partnered with the International OCD Foundation to spread the word, even distributing them to attendees at the IOCDF Conference in Washington, DC this past July. For others, Kaufman is happy to ship out bracelets with the promise that wearers will post images on their social media with her hashtag: #tearingocdapart. “It’s really all about bringing awareness,” she says. “I want all people to have the knowledge that if you suffer from OCD, ERP can help.”

AWKS CAY RESORT, WHICH HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR RENOVATION since Hurricane Irma hit the Florida Keys in September 2017, today announced it will reopen August 30, 2018, unveiling a refreshed resort experience. Opening in time for its 10th annual Heroes Salute kickoff event, which takes place over Labor Day weekend, the Resort will celebrate the holiday with a full schedule of events including a 5K run/walk, live music concert, heroes tribute ceremony, and fireworks. “After months of restoration and hard work, we’re eager to reopen and introduce guests to the reimagined Hawks Cay,” stated Sheldon Suga, Hawks Cay Resort VP managing director. “We’re bringing back what guests loved about Hawks Cay with a fresh design in the main hotel and new experiences that will take the Resort into a new era.” Ushering in the next phase of this legendary resort’s iconic history, the debut of the upgraded Hawks Cay will further elevate its status as a leading, one-of-a-kind vacation experience in the Florida Keys. The $50 million dollar renovation focused on the main hotel with a brand new design of the lobby, 177 guestrooms, and public areas. The main hotel’s new look celebrates its island sensibility with a coastal-inspired décor that is infused with a color palette of tropical hues and incorporates a range of natural seaside elements. The introduction of two restaurant concepts will complement the Resort’s new spirit, providing both fine-dining and fast-casual options. Sixty-one Prime, a contemporary addition to the culinary offerings, will feature a menu of prime steaks and signature seafood dishes, as well as a selection of seasonal specials presented by Executive Chef William Ryan and Restaurant Chef Adam Matyi. For the first time ever, guests will be able to coordinate a romantic private dining experience from Sixty-one Prime in their guestroom or around the Saltwater Lagoon. Hawks Cay Marketplace will open as a casual eatery serving a fresh menu of salads, sandwiches and pizzas that can be easily taken to-go for guests who don’t want to leave their lounge chair for too long. Appealing to the 21 and older crowd, Oasis Cay is a new “adults-only” area. An expansion of the Tranquility Pool, the larger area now includes a bar and grill that features its own menu of island-inspired bites and specialty drinks. “We’ve focused on the physical changes of the main resort area, but we’ve also taken this opportunity to spend a lot
