The first, The Fourth Annual National Wyland Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, runs through the end of April and asks residents to reduce water consumption, energy use and pollution while helping their city meet goals and earn prizes. Visit mywaterpledge. com for more information. The second, the 2016 Broward Water Partnership Neighborhood Water Challenge, continues through the end of May and asks neighbors to work together to save water. Each family on the winning team will win $1,000 cash with winners determined by comparing 2015 and 2016 water bills.

NicView Cameras Come to Memorial Hospital West BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

N

EW MOTHERS AT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WEST’S FAMILY BIRTHPLACE are getting a little bit closer to their newborns these days thanks to NicView, a secured camera system placed above beds in the the Newborn Nurseries and Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The system is bringing instant connections for families of babies born through surgical births, allowing moms in recovery to watch their infants via computer, tablet or smartphone. The live feeds have no sound and are used on a secure internet line that is designed to preclude recording by a parent or the hospital. Parents receive a password to log onto the system, which can be passed to other family members and friends helping families bond and spread their newborn news from the nurseries to families all around the world. To date (the cameras were installed in late February), more than 575 users have logged into the system, sharing their baby’s video streams with families and friends in more than 10 different countries and more than 15 states around the nation. The program has been successful in other hospitals around the country, even allowing nurses to leave notes for family

members, updating them on the baby’s progress. “The installation of these cameras enhances patient- and family-centered care that is so vital at Memorial Healthcare System,” said Mary Bridget Roberts Ed.D. ARNP, NE-BC, director of nursing, Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace. “Patients and families are thrilled to have the ability to see their newest family member via a password protected system that allows parents and extended family members 24/7 access to the new bundle of joy.”

Spotlight On: The Yellow Dot Program BY CIT Y NE WS STAFF

L

AUNCHED IN EARLY FEBRUARY, THE Yellow Dot program is designed to assist Broward County residents and first responders in the event of an automobile crash or other medical emergency involving the participant’s vehicle. How does it work? A yellow dot decal displayed on the vehicle alerts emergency responders to look for an accompanying pamphlet in the vehicle’s glove compartment. The information provided on the pamphlet then helps emergency responders decide how to treat victims if they are unable to communicate effectively following an accident. We sat down with Broward Mayor Marty Kiar to talk about the programs inception, community response and the benefits of more information.

HOW AND WHEN WAS THE YELLOW DOT PROGRAM CREATED?

A few years ago the Florida Legislature passed the law and it allowed counties to adopt the Yellow Dot program. They reason they did that, was because first responders went up the legislature and told them they did not have enough information to provide the best treatment when they arrive at the scene of an accident and people are unconscious or nonresponsive. They wanted more information, so they came up with the Yellow Dot Program, which is the yellow pamphlet with the information. If people want to participate they take the yellow decal and put it in the back of their car, then take the yellow pamphlet and fill out certain pertinent medical information. It is not information that people could use to steal an identity; it’s information that the first responders will utilize to save their lives. So, people will put a picture of themselves, write their name and the information.

HOW MANY PAMPHLETS CAN YOU FILL OUT?

You can ask for as many pamphlets as people ride in your car. The yellow decal, under state law, gives first responders permission to go into your glove box, take out the pamphlet, open it, and see the medical information that is in there [so that] they can provide emergency treatment to the person that is in the car that corresponds to the pamphlet. So if a person has a medical condition, they will know what type of treatments they can provide to that person. If the person does not have any medical conditions, they know that there is more treatment that they can do at the scene, as they don’t have to take as many precautions.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The county has funded the initial 100,000 decals and 100,000 pamphlets, when that is exhausted we have partnered up with many of the cities to fund the next 100,000 decals and pamphlets. So far, 16 cities are participating along with the county. Every city that I have asked has said yes, I am still working on meeting with the others. It is a nice partnership between the cities and the county.

IS IT UNIQUE TO BROWARD COUNTY 14

OR HAS IT BEEN ROLLED OUT IN OTHER COMMUNITIES AS WELL?

Palm Beach has adopted it and it has been implemented there and Broward County as well. I am hoping that other counties will start following our lead and adopt it, because I think it would be very important to be a statewide program. The bigger it gets and the more jurisdictions, states, counties that participate in it, the more lives that can be saved. My goal is to get as big as we can.

THE BENEFITS TO THE DRIVER ARE OBVIOUS BUT WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIRST RESPONDERS?

I believe that folks go into law enforcement and become paramedics or fire fighters because they want to protect the public and save lives. In order for first responders to do the best job they can they need the most information possible to save lives. Right now, when a first responder gets to the scene of an accident and somebody is nonresponsive, there is a lot they can do, they do everything that they can, but there is a lot that they don’t do because they don’t have enough information. So, what this does is it actually provides the information they need to provide that extra step, to provide that extra treatment to the people on scene, so they can save more lives. The more information for them, the better; it helps them provide

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | April 2016

better service to the public.

HOW AND WHERE CAN DRIVERS REGISTER FOR THE PROGRAM?

The easiest way to find information about the program is to go to the county’s website broward.org/yellowdot. You can also email bcyellowdot@broward.org or you can call our customer service number 954-831-4000 or 311. But the easiest way is the website. That will give you a list of all the areas where the yellow pamphlet and the yellow dots are. They are in different fire stations throughout the county and they are situated well so that everybody can have easy access to them. So, you can go the fire station and they will give you the yellow dot and the amount of pamphlets that you need. You can also go to the website and print it. There are a different number of ways that can be done.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE SO FAR?

The response has been great! It’s a relatively new program, so we haven’t gotten any real feedback yet from the first responders, but I know that there are a lot of people that have requested the yellow dot. Everywhere that I go, I speak about it, I hand them out and there are a lot of people that have started to put them on their car. I know that the first responders are very excited about it.

Pembroke Pines First-Time Voters

Our clients have lost over 52 MILLION POUNDS! REAL PEOPLE. SERIOUS WEIGHT LOSS.

“I got SERIOUS and lost 30 POUNDS in 10 weeks!”

TUDENTS IN PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNment classes took their first official step into adulthood when they stepped into the voting booth during the Florida Primary early voting for the 2016 Presidential Election.

Before

Students were met by Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor Iris Siple, Commissioners Angelo Castillo and Jay Schwartz and City Manager Charles Dodge, to pose for a commemorative photo prior to casting their votes on campus at the Southwest Regional library. “Our students have researched the presidential candidates as part of their government class and today they exercised their right to vote for the very first time,” said teacher William Quigley. “The timing of this election was a perfect conclusion for their course work.” The Advanced Placement Government students, taught by Carrie Hyacinth helped inform the entire student body about the presidential candidates through a series of speeches. “Our students have a better understanding of the role they now play in guiding our country, into their future, through the power of their single vote,” said Quigley. Mirroring classes from the PPCHS government classes were seventh grade students in a Civics class taught by Diana Bivona from the Pembroke Pines Charter Academic Village. Students in Bivonas class participated in a mock voting process, and followed the high school students to the polls. Following the voting, Peter Bayer, Principal at the PPCHS, led the students to the school’s bell tower to participate in a long standing tradition of ringing the bell to acknowledge that something special had occurred on campus. “Our students ring the bell when they have been accepted to a college, or inducted to the National Honor Society among other events,” said Bayer. “Today they rang the bell to signify taking responsibility for their future by using their new power to vote.”

Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

Choosing the Right Summer Camp BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

A

S A DIRECTOR OF RIVIERA DAY CAMP, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR of Riviera Prep, and the founder and owner of Court’s 1-on-1 Universe, Courtney Young has more experience than most when it comes to choosing a camp for his children. 1. Safety. Young advises parents to think beyond the obvious. “All camps should be physically safe, but it’s the emotional side you need to consider as well,” he says. Taking into account the philosophy of the camp and the relationships with the director can be telling on both sides. A red flag? A director who’s not available for communication with parents, staff, and/or campers. 2. Staff. Young advises parents to look into not only the age of the staff but how they are hired and trained. Are there background checks? What kind of responsibilities does each counselor have when it comes to the kids? What’s the ratio of staff to campers? While high schools students can make great assistants or helpers, Young says they may not be the best first choice for a group counselor. “Think of it this way: ‘How can a child be responsible for another child?’” 3. Amenities. In the Miami summer heat, Young suggests making sure the camp has either a pool and/or an air-conditioned indoor space to keep kids cool and out of the sun for part of the day. Another Miami challenge? The rain. “Make sure to ask them what they do when it’s pouring all day,” he says. 4. Logistics. The basics may be covered in brochures ,but Young says asking the right questions can enhance your confidence in and understanding of the program. Some suggested ones? “How does the day go?” “Does my child choose what he or she does, or is the program scheduled for the group?” “Do they walk around alone?” and “What happens when they have to use the restroom?” 5. Security. From checking IDs at pickup to authorized lists of who can and cannot remove campers from the camp, Young says having an attendance policy in place is a major security precaution that parents should investigate. “Ask them how they take attendance and how they run dismissal.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

SUMMER C AMP

The Snackdown BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

I

T’S HOT AND HUMID AND NONE A SURPRISE WHEN YOUR CAMPER appears red-faced, sweaty and completely exhausted from a long day at camp. So how do you provide your kids with the healthiest options when they come home starving? Here are 10 ideas to take from the page to the fridge:

»» Seasonal Florida fruits: Blueberries, mangoes, melons, raspberries and watermelons are all great fresh picks for summer lunches. »» Frozen Fruit Kabobs: Load up a skewer with frozen grapes, bananas and strawberries then drizzle with melted chocolate for a popsicle-like hot weather treat. »» Grab-n-Go: Keep sliced carrots, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and other veggies as well as string cheese and other finger foods in the fridge for a quick grab. »» Homemade trail mix: Toss together some nuts and dried fruit then add-on with family favorites (try coconut!) for a healthy option of a store-bought staple. »» Frozen oranges: Scoop out an orange and blend with a bit of juice and ice, then freeze back inside the peel for a hydrating post-camp treat. »» Faux ice cream: Blend frozen bananas and add sprinkles. A kid-favorite! »» Cereal: Go for high-fiber, low-sugar options and you’ve got a fun (and portable) summer car snack. »» Chocolate Milk: Sounds decadent but did you know that milk is packed with calcium, protein, carb and vitamins? It’s sometimes been thought to be a better post-workout recovery drink than sports drinks. »» Popcorn: Whole grain and a great source of fiber, try popping kernels in a brown paper bag rather than pre-made bagged varieties. »» Fruit leather: Making your own can avoid corn syrup, preservatives and artificial colors and flavors and with ingredients limited to fruit, water, sugar and honey it’s easier than you think. FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FR ANK C. ORTIS, CIT Y OF PEMBROKE PINES

A

BRAND IS MORE THAN AN IMAGE, A LOGO OR A slogan – it’s what makes a city truly unique for residents, businesses and visitors. The City of Pembroke Pines has begun the process of trying to discover, define and design the City’s “brand,” our unique advantages that attract and keep residents, businesses, and visitors here now and in the future. A questionnaire has been created to help in this branding process. Everyone is welcome to complete the survey and share their input about the identity of Pembroke Pines. Please take a few moments now to answer this survey at ppines.com/brandingsurvey to ensure your voice is heard and to help us continue to keep the City of Pembroke Pines a great place to live, work, visit and play. Your feedback and direction are invaluable and will be used to guide the development of the City’s brand, helping to create a new vision for Pembroke Pines’ future. The more responses received, the more complete the view will be. Once again Pembroke Pines is participating in National Kids to Parks Day being held on May 14, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at various parks throughout the city. There will be free and fun activities featured at several locations. Kids to Parks Day is a nation-wide day of outdoor play organized by the National Park Trust (NPT) in cooperation with many local and national collaborators. Pembroke Pines and the NPT are encouraging all children and their families to explore neighborhood parks and discover the nature and science all around them. For more information, please visit ppines.com/facilities for directions to the city’s many parks and the activities offered. Please also join me this month in honoring the men and women who have died in military service for the United States at the City’s annual Memorial Day observation,

which will take place on Monday May 25, 2015 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Fletcher Art and Culture Center located at 7960 Johnson Street. The Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard, veterans, community leaders and special guest speakers will be present to pay tribute, and a wreath placing ceremony will take place. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CIT Y OF MIR AMAR

I

WOULD LIKE TO FIRST TAKE A MOMENT TO WELcome the readers of Miramar Pembroke Pines City News to Miramar. We are pleased to have you be a part of all we do and invite you to join us, see all the wonderful things that make up who we are and all that is great in our City. With that said, I’d like to share some information with you. Dexter Williams has been named the new Chief of Police for the City of Miramar. With more than 25 years of law enforcement experience -- 22 with the Miramar Police Department -- Chief Williams holds a bachelor of science in public administration from Barry University and two master’s degrees from St. Thomas University: one in justice administration and the other in public management. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He will oversee more than 260 employees that include command, administrative and civilian staff and be responsible for the management functions of controlling, planning, organizing, supervising and staffing for the entire police department. Miramar recently received great news from Tallahassee in the form of a million dollar presentation to the City from State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. for Flamingo Road Reclaim Water & Amphitheater Projects Funding. A number of your commission officials recently spent time in Tallahassee meeting with all of our representatives and making sure they were aware of projects in our great city. It’s nice to see results that benefit our residents. To our Haitian Community who make up a large part of who we are in the City of Miramar, we wish you all the best as you celebrate Haitian Flag Day on May 18th. For information regarding the upcoming celebration we will be hosting, please contact my

offices at 954-602-3198. For over 100 years now, when a woman named Anna Jarvis held a memorial service in honor of her mother, we’ve celebrated the beloved women in our lives whom we call Mom but who are also wives, daughters, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, friends, head of household and sometimes fathers as well. We cherish these women in our lives that somehow make life look simple while doing so much that makes life simpler for the rest of us. We don’t say it enough but Thank You. The village that it takes to raise our children begins with mothers and coincidentally, May is also the time when graduation marks a time of transition for our high school seniors. We are proud of the work they’ve accomplished to reach this major milestone, yet we wonder where has the time gone? Congratulations graduates, we wish you nothing but best wishes and a future filled with curiosity. Two weeks ago, I hosted my annual Mayor’s 3K Run/Walk and Health Fair at Miramar Town Center. It was a wonderful event with an estimated number of more than 700 people taking part via walking, running, health screenings and so much more. Thank you to everyone who participated including Memorial Hospital Miramar, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, 24 Hour Fitness, Aetna, Comcast and so many more. We are grateful and look forward to doing it again next year. Your Mayor in Miramar, Wayne M. Messam City of Miramar

Size Matters Vane sizes range from 2 ½” to 4 ½” vanes. Design tip - My advice, go for the large 4 ½” louvers on large openings. This opens up the view to create an open feel. For sliding panels use 3 ½” louvers or else your frame projects too far into the room. Tilt Style Front tilt is more traditional while the rear tilt (upcharge) is more contemporary. Design tip - avoid front tilt bar if your panel sizes are narrow. It can look crowded. Perfect Complement Hunter Douglas shutters complement any décor and window style. ArtsEd Forever! The Academy Awards of Broward Arts Education BY NANCY KALIKOW MAXWELL

“The envelope, please.” The name is called. The audience gasps, then cheers. The winner stands, bursts into tears, and comes forward to accept the award. No, I’m not at the Oscars, nor the Tonys or even the Country Music Awards. Rather, I’m at an annual celebration hosted by the Broward Cultural Division for the last 30 yearsto recognize selected teachers and organizations for outstanding contributions to arts education. The excitement began with an elegant cocktail reception at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Nominees and their families, arts administrators and elected officials, balanced plates of meatball sliders while they schmoozed and anxiously awaited the program’s beginning. When Broward Cultural Division’s Director Earl Bosworth, approached the podium voices lowered as anticipation rose. As I learned that evening, likening the ArtsEd Forever! award ceremony to the Oscars was not outlandish. For many nominees, winning this honor represents the epitome of successful career. Each of the 20 awards announced represented an exceptional achievement in a different aspect of arts education. Some awards recognized outstanding arts organizations, others recog-nized legislators for support, however they all honored efforts to inspire a love of the arts in children and young adults. Among the most soughtafter awards announced that evening were the Arts Teachers of the Year Awards. Out of all of Broward’s arts teachers in public, private and charter schools, four teachers were chosen, one in each of the categories of dance, music, theater and visual arts. Each applicant needed to complete a lengthy application, provide recommendations from school officials, and have classroom observations conducted by one of the award committee members. Each finalist received a $500 cash award, as did the

AITO, WHICH MEANS TURBULENT SEA, IN JAPANESE, WAS BORN 9 months ago. It is an Akita, which is a large breed of dog originating from the mountainous northern regions of Japan. His owner first fell in love with this kind of dog when he saw how noble and loyal they are, after he watched the movie ‘Hachi: A dog’s Tale’ with Richard Gere. He is happily living with a family of 4: Dad, mom and 2 children. He is very sociable, faithful, loyal and lovable, his owner says. He loves his morning and afternoon walks in the area of Pembroke Pines, were he can run and play with other dogs in the beautiful parks in the area.

sponsoring school, and the winning arts teacher received a $2,000 gift. Even more than the money, it was the recognition of achievement that motivated nominees. At least, that was what drove Andrea Alter, Weston’s Falcon Cove Middle School dance teacher. When she was chosen as a finalist for Arts Teacher of the Year, she said, “I consider myself lucky to get paid to do what I love. But to be recognized and appreciated for my work as a finalist. That was the best feeling ever!” Her appreciation at being nominated as a finalist turned into overwhelming joy when her name was called as the winning Arts Teacher of the Year in the Dance category. Along with Alter, the three other Arts Teachers of the Year winners were: Tami Williams, Hollywood’s West Hollywood Elementary School, for music; Jerry Seeger, Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquinas High School, for theater arts; and Phylis Mastrianni, Parkside Elementary School in Coral Springs, for visual arts. As each came up to accept the award, photos flashed, applause thundered, and families and colleagues high-fisted each other. Each winner was even escorted off stage by a young woman in an evening gown. If you didn’t’ know better, you would have sworn you were at the Academy Awards, rather than a school awards ceremony.

SEEN ON SCENE EASTER EVENTS IN THE PINES

Pines’ Annual Sundaes with the Bunny drew a fantastic community turnout on March 22, with families heading over to the Southwest Focal Point Community Center make sundaes, play games and dance with friends. “Mr. Bunny was very happy to be with the children of Pembroke Pines and this year he had a chance to meet Vice Mayor Iris Siple and Commissioner Jay Schwartz,” said organizer Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. Attendees chose their ice cream flavor and added super sweet toppings of Whoppers Robin Eggs, Reese’s Pieces Eggs, Marshmallow Egg Swirlers, Skittles, Gummy Bears, Mini Cadbury Eggs, Nerds bumpy jelly beans and more... with whipped cream and cherries on top. “Rob from Superstar productions helped everyone burn off the sugar with fast paced games including a boy vs. girl hopscotch relay, daddy’s putt putt golf, and a moms vs. dads hopscotch,” said Novo. “We were sold out a week in advance. Sundaes with the Bunny is a Pembroke Pines favorite!” Just one week later families reconvened to celebrate with more than 5,000 children for the annual Egg Hunt held simultaneously at Pines Recreation Center and Pembroke Shores Park. “Our annual Egg Hunts are enjoyable for the children participating and parents who recall the holiday egg hunts of their childhoods,” said Novo. The free egg hunt for children ages 12 and younger also featured games, a bounce house, face painting visits with the bunny, food trucks, and bunny ears. The first 500 children received a bucket for the egg hunt and future summer beach fun from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
