HE SUMMER IS UPON US AND SOON OUR KIDS WILL BE OUT OF school, The cities of Miramar and Pembroke Pines along with some of our schools have arranged great Summer camps to keep our little ones busy. In this edition you will find a guide to some of them. We also have an amazing story on Tom Whitehurst from the Center of Autisim and related disabilities, "In the Cards". It is a great story that will warm your heart. This past month we were invited by the Mayor to the Miramar Cultural Center to a see a great production from Uganda, The African Children's Choir. I went with my kids and we were at awe at this wonderful foundation, I really hope Miramar City brings them again next year. Thank you to all those involved.

The choir, now out on a national tour, act as ambassadors for the millions of children back in their homeland, using funds raised via tours for education and to support their larger umbrella organization, Music for Life, which works in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan, South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana to improve the lives, education and futures of thousands of children. The African Children’s Choir and Music for Life have so far educated more than 50,000 children in its 30 year history, and have helped a further 100,000 children through relief and education projects. For the children on tour, however, the experiences and opportunities go past just fundraising. Those chosen (more than 1,000 so far) are able to travel the world, embarking on a journey of personal development according to their tutors and caregivers, and creating career opportunity for kids who may not have had such options. While on tour the children stay up to date on lessons via improvised classrooms at each stop, making sure they are able to pick up where they left off when they return to their home school. Education is at the heart of the program, ACC directors told local Haitian television, emphasizing that many of the families wouldn’t otherwise be able to provide the level of schooling the children now receive, a key element to “breaking the cycle of poverty.” Breaking that cycle is exactly what spurred Ray Barnett to establish the first choir in 1984. While on a humanitarian trip to Uganda, Barnett gave a young boy a ride and was touched by his companion’s singing. “When I went back to Canada and people were not very interested in Uganda, I remembered this small boy,” Ray explains on the ACC website. “I knew that if only a group of these beautiful children could go to the West, people would be deeply moved and would certainly want to help.” For more information on the African Children’s Choir and Music for Life visit africanchildren’schoir.com.

120 Students Trained in CPR at Pembroke Pines Charter School BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

1

20 PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE now one step closer to saving a life after receiving instruction and hands-on training in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for adults and infants, and the Heimlich maneuver during a Health Opportunities through Physical Education (H.O.P.E.) class. The class, led by Lt. Ruben Rodriguez and Jamie Shires, both Firefighter/Paramedics with the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department was a result of the “Save a Life, Bystander CPR and AED Training Week” City Resolution passed by the City of Pembroke Pines Mayor and Commission. “Having this opportunity to teach high school students CPR will have an impact on society, especially on the lives of those in need of immediate assistance,” said Sandra Lluis, fire marshall for the City of Pembroke Pines. Though the City also provided a free evening of “Family and Friends CPR Training” and offers plenty of opportunities for training (including a free two hour non-certification class on the third Monday of the month), H.O.P.E. and Phys Ed teacher Kathie Schmidt says students don’t always place their focus on community education. ““Students have very busy lives,” she says. “Bringing the CPR training to the school is providing an educational opportunity they may not have thought about seeking out.” For those who do plan to take advantage, class sizes are limited to just 30 people and can be accessed via the ppines.com website. “The Pembroke Pines resolution sends a message about the importance of promoting CPR and the benefits of automated external defibrillation,” says Fire Chief John Picarello. “We encourage our residents to get the training, everyone has the ability to help save a life and the first step is learning CPR.”

CPR FACTS Need to brush up on your CPR in time for summer? According to the American Heart Association 70 percent of Americans don’t know how to administer CPR. Be sure to register for a free community class and always remember these basics: • Hands-only CPR can double or triple an adult patient’s chance of survival • Always check for res ponsiveness by tapping the shoulder and shouting “Are you ok?” • Call for help via 911 or shout to a specific person nearby to call for you.

5 QUESTIONS

Israeli American Council Program Director Nir Lerman BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

P

INES RESIDENTS WILL GET A TASTE OF ISRAEL ON MAY 22 WHEN the 2016 Celebrate Israel event hits CB Smith Park. The event, which aims to create a bridge between Israeli Americans and Jewish Americans provides the look and feel of Israel via arts, culture and innovation. The event will take place in cities throughout the country during the month of May. “We are delighted to bring the spirit of Israel to South Florida, and to offer families the opportunity to experience what this extraordinary country is all about,” said Nir Lerman, program director for IAC Florida. The festival will also feature a Kosher food court featuring popular Israeli street foods such as hummus, salads, falafel and barbeque. Guests will also be able to stroll through the Mahane Yehuda Market—which mimics the dynamic outdoor marketplace in Jerusalem—and the landscapes of Tel Aviv will be brought to Florida with a mini Tel Aviv beach. In addition to the wide array of entertainment, the festival will also offer a range of activities including bungee-jumping, a climbing wall and inflatable slides. Adults will be able to stop by the Israeli coffee shop and browse Judaica and Israeli jewelry and crafts. We sat down with Lerman to talk the event’s conception, it’s place within the Pines community and what to expect in it’s second year.

HOW AND WHEN DID THE EVENT BEGIN IN PEMBROKE PINES?

The Celebrate Israel festival started in 2015. When we decided to host this event, we started searching for venues that were close to our target population and able to grow with us each year as more people participate in the festival. CB Smith park is the perfect fit!

WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING AS FAR AS TURNOUT THIS YEAR?

Last year we had 10,000 people come to the Celebrate Israel Festival. This year we are expecting between 10,000 and 15,000 people.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE COMMUNITY HAS CONNECTED TO THE EVENT SO WELL.

We think the community has connected to Celebrate Israel because it is an opportunity to feel like you are in Israel while still in South Florida. We are providing educational content about Israel in a fun way that both adults and children can enjoy. The IAC has gone above and beyond to bring a full Israeli experience through music, art, food, and different cultures within Israel to life.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED FOR DURING THIS YEAR’S EVENT?

We are very excited that this year we are bringing more variety of music groups. With this change in artists we are reaching out to a different community.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE EVENT?

The IAC hopes that the community in South Florida unite, support, and stand with Israel.

It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. That event, Tropical Nights, celebrated its 14th anniversary this year, with the event honoring Whitehurst with its CARD Community Leadership Award. “Tropical Nights is now a signature event in our community and raises much needed monies to help CARD continue to offer the myriad of services and programs that families need,” says Whitehurst. “We’ve seen [the event] grow from a small social function to an event attended by over 500 supporters.” ABOUT UM - NSU CARD: Based in UM’s Department of Psychology (and at NSU in Broward), CARD is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families, offering services, research initiatives, social and support groups and more. In the past the Center has created everything from Project Sail at Shake a Leg in Coconut Grove to a surf camp on Miami Beach as well as social and recreational outings and conference scholarships. “In South Florida alone, CARD serves almost 10,000 individuals with ASD,” says Whitehurst. “Their services are free of charge to these individuals, their families and the professionals that support them.” NEW OPPORTUNITIES: After seeing his son complete three years of culinary training only to find himself unemployed, Whitehurst saw an opening to create employment opportunities for adults with DD. With approximately 50,000 individuals with autism turning 22 each year (the year that marks the end of most government support services), Whitehurst says unemployment among these adults is estimated to be more than 90 percent… as are rates of social isolation. Enter Work for America, the local nonprofit Whitehurst founded last year. “Our plans for Work for America are to start enterprises that will employ adults with DD and to assist families and other organizations that are doing so,” he says. “We are all about creating jobs, not just training for jobs that will never exist.”

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | May 2016

FUTURE PL ANS: Post-event Whitehurst and CARD are continuing to work hard to raise the needed funds for future expansion. As for Work for America, they’ve found a partner in Miami’s OPA Works, a school/day program for people with Autism, Downs Syndrome and other DD and the first major enterprise they’re supporting. “They have 50 adults in their program and are off to a flying start.”

‘‘

While I am proud to have fought the good fight for CARD and all of the other wonderful groups in the community, I am actually most proud of the struggles that my son Thomas must overcome every day of his life to succeed at things we take for granted. He never stops trying.”

Mayor’s Chess Challenge Inspires Students BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

1

25 STUDENTS OF ALL AGES JOINED PEMBROKE Pines Mayor Ortis, Commissioner Jay Schwartz, Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan, School Board Member Patti Good, Broward County Schools’ Dr. Mark Strauss, and Wendi “The Chess Lady” Fischer, Executive Director of Americas Foundation 4 Chess, for a morning of chess at Pembroke Pines’ Club Nineteen. “Chess is a great game and The Mayor’s Chess Challenge promotes critical and creative thinking in our young people,” said Mayor Ortis. The Challenge, a free traveling event, brings together community leaders, students and families to draw attention and awareness to the importance of scholastic chess. And the students certainly find enjoyment in the community initiative. “Children came from all over and one young man, Alex Davis from Davie, has not missed one Mayor’s Chess Challenge,” said Ortis. Far from a slow and serene day, the City thought outside the chess board to create fun, interactive game-playing for the attendees. “In addition to 50 regulation chess boards and two garden chess boards, we set up a life-size chess board that was also in play throughout the morning,” said Francie Novo,

special events coordinator for the city of Pembroke Pines. The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a First Move event, sponsored by the nonprofit Americas Foundation 4 Chess www.af4c.org . Internationally Americas Foundation 4 Chess First Move program can be found in Scotland, England, Kenya, St Lucia, Antigua, Suriname and 26 States in the U.S. where approximately 140,000 students participate in the program. “The Chess Lady” teaches chess lessons via streaming video into the classroom where teachers reinforce the student chess/learning activities. “Chess players of all ages and skill levels had a wonderful morning learning the game or challenging one another,” said Novo. The City of Pembroke Pines and Power Financial Credit Union were the sponsors of April’s Traveling Mayor’s Chess Challenge supporting scholastic chess. Children and adults from all over Broward County have had their “chess passports” stamped wherever they have played in the Mayor’s Chess Challenge. The final Mayor’s Chess Challenge was held in Weston on May 7 at the Weston Community Center. SUMMER C AMPS

ARTS CORNER

Summer Arts Camps BY ALLEGR A NAGLER

O

NE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT SUMmer – besides no school – is summer camp, and especially summer art camp, where you can channel your inner diva. From singing, dancing, or learning to play a musical instrument, art camp provides a wealth of opportunities to stimulate a child’s creativity. Many cities, such as the City of Miramar and the City of Pembroke Pines, offer summer art camp for kids ages 6 – 16. “Studies show how the arts can translate into tremendous scholastic achievements for students,” says Natasha Hampton, a spokesperson for the City of Miramar. “We’re committed to providing quality programming for our youth.” With cuts to many arts programs in Florida schools, art camp is where a kid can unplug from the rigors of the academic year and let his or her creative juices flow. It’s an opportunity to make new friends, develop self-confidence and self-esteem and to excel in a newly acquired skill, whether it’s singing, drawing, learning to play keyboards or trying out the latest hip-hop step. Camp is also where a lifetime of memories are made. It’s an environment for kids to grow socially and emotionally, to belong and feel part of a group, to stretch themselves and broaden their horizons. Anisa Buckridge, 13, Jr. Miss Florida 2014, loves all the performing arts and learned to play the violin last summer at camp. She performed in the Little Broadway production of “Annie,” learning her lines and choreography. “Art camp is an experience she cherishes,” says mom Deborah Buckridge, a paralegal in Miami. “She’s a natural born performer. For a parent, getting to see your child do what she loves is awesome.” In Pembroke Pines, art instructor Alinna Diaz explored the theme of “around the world,” teaching her students about Chinese ceramics and creating paper-mâché vases with blue glazes and dragon imagery. Learning about recycling, the students crafted cameras out of recycled Sharpie boxes and toilet paper rolls, and glued pictures of themselves and their family onto the viewfinder. Jamir Parker, 9, a third grader at the Renaissance Elementary School in Pembroke Pines attended art camp last summer. “Jamir enjoys art camp,” says his mom Angela Peace, who was also impressed by the caliber of the counselors. “He knows all the kids and counselors and it’s a great experience for him and all the kids.”

Tara Chadwick is one of those instructors in Miramar. An arts educator, she will reprise her role this summer as musical theater instructor for the Little Broadway Summer Camp, for ages 7-13. Chadwick spends time with each student to cultivate their musical, dance and singing abilities. Students come in as novices and within seven weeks are performing on stage at the Miramar Cultural Center in a live production, complete with costumes and scenery. “I encourage everyone to come and see our show and get a sense of what is possible through the arts,” Chadwick says.

"We’re pleased to offer children an opportunity to explore their creative side and engage in the arts over the summer,” says Holly Bonkowski, division director of cultural arts for the City of Pembroke Pines. “It’s important to us to support the arts and culture our city has to offer and we encourage our parents and children to do the same." Who knows, they just might be the next Britney Spears or Justin Bieber in the making.

CHOOL IS ENDING AND SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE, and that means many of us will be swimming in pools and in the ocean to cool off. I’d like to take this time to remind you about the #SaferBy4 Campaign that the City of Pembroke Pines is participating in to reduce preventable child deaths. The #SaferBy4 Campaign is designated to help children reach their fourth birthday. One of the components of the #SaferBy4 Campaign is Water Safety. Here are just a few tips to remember. »» Make sure that someone is always actively watching the water when a child is in the pool. »» Assign a “Water Watcher” to ensure that a responsible adult is supervising the child. »» Children should never have accessibility to water without being accompanied by an adult. »» Have several (in case one fails) ways to physically block a child from a pool. Barriers include door alarms, pool fences, self-latching gates, child proof locks and pool covers. »» Early activation of EMS, CPR and Rescue Breathing can mean the difference between life and death. »» Keep a phone by the pool and learn CPR and Rescue Breathing. IT'S THEIR BUSINESS

A Family Affair BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

F

OR MIRTA ESTRADA, HER DAILY LIFE AS A BUSIness owner is, quite literally, all about family. As the owner of Little Me Preschool in Pembroke Pines, Estrada welcomes other people’s families into her orbit with the warmth and protectiveness that can only be honed through years of working with children. But it doesn’t stop there. Partnering with her sister, Diana Portal, the sisters (as they are known in the community) raised six children between them (Estrada has 4, Portal 2) while working in the education field and opening Little Me, but didn’t stop there. The sisters say they are blessed to have their mom, Marlene to help with various office duties and, until four years ago their retired dad, Jerry who helped around the school (“He could fix anything,” they say). Students used to lovingly call him "grandpa". Today, after 20 years in business, Estrada and Portal preside over 10,000 square feet of indoor campus, as well as two playgrounds (one for ages three-to-five years old and another for toddlers) and offer year-round childcare that includes preschool, VPK, aftercare and summer camp. “We do believe in free play, time for a child to pick and chose the centers they enjoy,” say Estrada and Portal of their teaching philosophies. “We try to encourage role play and discovering new things that they can accomplish on their own, as well as having structure to carry out our curriculum.” Mirta Estrada

The owners' transparency about the school is a main point of differentiation, says Estrada, noting that they do not create specific hours for parent tours, preferring for parents to drop in and take advantage of her open door policy, a key to making, and keeping them, comfortable. “The best compliment we receive time and time again is that we make people feel very comfortable when they come in for a tour,” she says, noting that she opened her first daycare in 1990, after becoming anxious about leaving then-three-month-old son. “The fact of the matter is that as a parent, one needs to feel they can walk in unannounced and see what our students are accomplishing. Diana Portal The classrooms may be a little messy, but that's only because our kids are busy creating and learning. It's not going to be a situation where everything looks perfectly put away… toys or books are out of reach and not touched. Believe me, when you walk in, it's obvious that our students have been busy and we love that!” Keeping them busy is the sisters’ team of loyal staff (32 full-time and 15 part-time), most of whom have been with the school for more than a decade. “Our teachers have varied degrees, from Masters in Early Education to Bachelors and Child Development Accreditations,” she says. “Along with ongoing education, our teachers are always searching for enchanting ways to keep their students engaged in learning activities. Our teachers are so dedicated and truly love being around kids.” Another aspect of the school that fuels pride for the sisters is their commitment to the health and wellness of their charges. To that end the school offers breakfast, lunch and snack — all prepared on site and adhering to the FDA Healthy Foods program. Peanut- and hot dog free, the school only serves food with a “CN” or “child nutrition” label, which is rewarded with reimbursement from the state. “This, in turn, helps us offer all meals included with the tuition and thus a lower price compared to the excruciating high tuition rates at the other schools,” says Estrada. Including meals has also helped in less obvious ways, say the sisters. Though VPK (or Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) is only slated for three hours per day by state subsidy, the school found that including breakfast and lunch (extending the day to 4.5 hours) has made for happier students. Little Me also offers an extended VPK option for parents who want to pick up at 3 pm or 6:30 pm as well. “Last fall we graduated 62 VPK students, some that experienced a preschool setting for the first time,” says Estrada. “Our students scored 93% [in Kindergarten assessments], which is amazing!” When it comes to younger children, the school focuses on keeping parents happy… and in the loop. Says Estrada “Our parents love the fact that we have online password protected cameras so they can peek in and check on their children's daily activities. This is essential in the baby room when first time mommies are struggling with the separation anxiety when they have to return to work. They love the peace of mind.” For more information, please call 954.433.5269 or visit littlemepreschool.com.

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CIT Y OF MIR AMAR

A

S A CANDIDATE RUNning for mayor, it was an amazing experience meeting so many residents and business owners. What I enjoyed most about the experience was discussing real issues that matter most to all of us in Miramar. Now as your Mayor, I want you to know that I am always available to you - via email, phone or at the office. To further engage the community, I am launching the “Conversation with Mayor Messam Series”. The purpose of the series is to provide an opportunity for residents and business owners to have an informal conversation about issues that matter most to the community, just like I did as a candidate. Much S AT U R DAY, J U N E 11T H

2 - 4 p.m., One Luv Cuts Barbershop, 6927 Miramar Parkway, 33023

T U E S DAY, J U N E 14T H,

has taken place during my first year of being the mayor and I want you to know all about it! So beginning in June, I will be in a neighborhood near you and meeting with residents at local business locations. The first series of “Conversation with Mayor Messam" is listed below. I hope you will take this opportunity to come out and talk to me about our City. If you have any questions, concerns, whatever's on your mind, I look forward to conversing with you.

MIRAMAR NEWS UPDATE:

The City’s website has been updated with a number of improvements. Our IT department took great pains in planning and trying to ensure that the site is user friendly with information readily available to our residents and visitors. The new City Website includes information about city departments, the online services we S AT U R DAY, J U N E 18T H, offer, links to view your elected offiNoon -2 p.m. cials respective pages and more. We Plaza Diner invite you to log on to miramarfl.gov 3118 South University Drive, 33025 and take a look. To get the best SU N DAY, J U LY 10T H, benefit from the new City website 2-4 p.m. as a resident, create an account that Tony's Haitian Buffet Restaurant enables you to maneuver easily and 7996 Miramar Parkway, 33023 create your own experience.

Recently, I was invited to be a featured speaker at a National League of Cities conference entitled Big Ideas for Cities. The event featured a series of Ted-style talks and panels from mayors across the country and invited me, as your Mayor, to participate as well. This was a platform for America’s mayors to share their “Big Ideas” that are driving economic resilience within their communities and it was an honor to represent our great City. The mission statement for the National League of Cities (NLC) states that they “are dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. Working in partnership with the 49 state municipal leagues, NLC serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns it represents.” If you would like to view a portion of the video conference, log on to the city’s website at www. miramarfl.gov and go to my personal page and you will see a link to the video. In conclusion, June is Caribbean American Heritage Month. I wish all of our residents, employees and visitors who hail from the Caribbean a wonderful month of celebrations and events as you celebrate your heritage. Yours in Service, Mayor Wayne Messam, City of Miramar

ITH PIROUETTE® WINDOW SHADINGS, THE look and feel of a traditional fabric shade is enhanced: the gentle pull of a cord lets you change a room’s lighting in a whole new way. Soft, horizontal fabric vanes close to filter natural light, or open to give you a perfect outside view. Our revolutionary Invisi-Lift™ system allows the vanes to float gracefully, and even opened they offer UV protection and reduced glare through the sheer backing. Pirouette Shades fit into any décor scheme because you have 256 color combinations to match your décor perfectly. Hunter Douglas is really the master of design. They took the traditional Roman shade and married it with the Silhouette sheer shade. So now the Pirouette gives you the softness and elegance of the soft folds of the Roman shade but with the added benefit of having the ability to look outside when the shade is down. I absolutely love the Metallic Satin fabrics recently introduced in the fabric line. They add shimmer and excitement to the entire look and complement today’s contemporary décor perfectly.

A Trip Worth More Than Money! BY CL ARONA WILLIAMS, TR AV EL ADVISOR

J

ANET MET HER FIANCÉ Brian aboard a cruise ship four years ago. Who would think they’d connect and fall in love (with a total stranger no less) on a random vacation? Four years later, Janet and Brian thought it would only be fitting to get married aboard the same ship that began their love story, and to recreate those memories with their closest friends and family. They worked with a travel consultant to help plan out the details, such as a cocktail party and onboard activities for the wedding guests. It was more than a cruise, it was an experience no guest would ever forget. Sometimes a trip is not just a trip. Some travel is a life enhancing evolution. Many travelers are planning vacations to get a break from the daily hustle and bustle. Some of these travelers want to create a monumental memory, and so, seek the experience and support of a personal travel consultant. Here is another unforgettable story: Sharon, a cancer survivor, became a life coach and advocate, inspiring women to live their fullest life by pursuing their dreams. In honor of her anniversary OF

being cancer free, she wanted to plan a retreat at sea. Sharon found the most economical way to host a retreat was aboard a cruise ship. She entrusted the travel planning to a personal travel consultant, got great support and guidance in creating a supportive life enhancing retreat for women and learned how to raise money to donate to a cancer foundation. Best of all, it was an affordable trip for her and the participants. Sharon’s retreat participants, got way more than the trip they paid for; they developed meaningful friendships

through the bonding experiences and learned how they can live richer and fuller lives when they returned home. Many participants already planned to return the following year. This is just another example of a trip worth more than money. Group travel can be intimidating, confusing and even overwhelming when you attempt to do it on your own. Planning travel details, collecting money, securing meals and figuring out group activities is not an easy task when you have 100-plus other things on your plate. With the support and expertise of a personal travel consultant, your event at sea could have a major impact on the lives of your guests. If you are uncertain of ways to enhance your life by travel make an appointment with a travel consultant to learn more. Sometimes the best trips are the ones with an amazing story. What’s your story going to be? Clarona Williams, a travel advisor, is an experienced traveler and dedicates her time to serving others. She is a Cruise Planner Franchisee today because of her love for travel; her joy is to serve others by educating and taking groups of people to the roots of their faith, providing new experiences in travel adventure and more! Other contributor, Seneca Williams her Associate. Email: willclar731@gmail.com if you would like to learn more!
