VERYBODY IS EITHER HAVING A GREAT TIME OR GETTING READY FOR the summer break. One of the highlights of this summer is the opening of the Amphitheater in Miramar Regional Park, which will open this July 4th. Big artisits are coming to our town, some of which are John Elefante, Kelly Price and one of my personal favorites the salsa great Eddie Santiago. Everyone will definitely have a great time. I have been peeking into the construction around the Amphitheater and it really looks amazing, great job City of Miramar. Summer is a time to go places and have a good time, in our article "Best Summer Ever," we have put together a list of amazing South Florida attractions that have to be visited, such as CB Smith Park, and my favorite Vizcaya. We also have a great article about The Cottages at Charleston Harbor, a nice place to check out, if you are looking to get out of Florida. On our Philanthropist section we have an interesting article on the "Guitars over Guns" organization, which can demostrare how music can change and mold young minds. Ok my neighbors keep enjoying our beautiful Sunshine!

PARK NAMING HONORS LONGTIME RESIDENT The City of Pembroke Pines will hold a Park Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony at 9201 N.W. 19th Street in Pembroke Pines on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., to honor Jack McCluskey, a 48-year resident and former City Commissioner and three time Vice Mayor. The neighborhood park in the Rainbow Lakes section of Pembroke Pines will be named McCluskey Rainbow Park. The park features eight outdoor-lighted racquetball courts, a shaded walking/jogging/ bike path, and a covered tot lot/playground. McCluskey and his wife Gloria raised their family in the Pasadena Lakes section of Pembroke Pines, where he began his lifelong service to Pembroke Pines as a Charter Member (1969) and later President of the Lakes Homeowners Association. “We are recognizing Jack for his dedicated and continuous service to the residents and employees of Pembroke Pines,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis.
GREAT YARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED
PINES HONORS LOCAL VETERANS
The winners of the City of Pembroke Pines 2017 Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award and the 2017 Broward County NatureScape Emerald Award were recognized at the June 7, 2017 City Commission Meeting. Now in its sixth year, the Great Yards Award contest was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman who was known for her love of nature, particularly butterflies, and who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. Members of the Pembroke Pines Environmental Advisory Board judged the yards on five components: Butterfly (the preservation of all stages of a butterfly's life), Design and Function, Maintenance, Florida Friendly Value and Use of Hardscapes. The winners representing each City Commission District and an at-large winner for 2017 are Linda Schainberg from District 1; Cathy and John Whitt from District 2; Erno Rosa and Mary Zappia from District 3; The Secret Garden at Century Village from District 4; and Joseph Zappia - At Large.
More than three hundred people, veterans, residents, community leaders, and special guests gathered for the City of Pembroke Pines Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Donnith H. Fletcher Veterans Memorial Park, paying tribute to American soldiers who had lost their lives in the service of their country. The City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard began the Memorial Day Observance and Ceremony by presenting the Colors and concluded with a wreath placing ceremony. Guest Speaker, Pembroke Pines resident Lt. Colonel David Olson, of the United States Southern Command spoke about the importance of duty to country and of the three Pembroke Pines residents who had served and made the ultimate sacrifice, including SPC. Donnith H. Fletcher, United States Army for whom the Memorial Park was named.
NEIGHBORHOOD FINDS PRIVACY THANKS TO HOME DEPOT
ROBOTICS TEAM EARNS WORLD RANKING
Home Depot Store #6852 and the City of Pembroke Pines teamed up to enhance Reconnect and Reenergize (R & R) Veterans Village in Pembroke Pines. Home Depot’s donation of over $20,000 worth of fencing and supplies was further enhanced by its two dozen skilled employee volunteers, three of whom were veterans. “We believe in our country and its veterans. R & R Village is the right place for Home Depot to have its feet on the ground and enhance the home front for our United States Veterans,” said Christopher Fraga, District #0085 Manager for Home Depot South Florida. Prior to the Home Depot Fence project, R & R Village was open on four sides, with one side adjacent to University Drive (Perry Airport is located directly across the street) inside the City of Pembroke Pines Howard C. Forman Health Campus. R & R Village was established in 2015 to provide transitional housing for Veterans getting back on their feet, but the homes actually date back to the early 1970’s and were in great need of renovation. “We were only able to make renovations as funding became available,” stated Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines, who has managed the project since its 2015 inception. “To date we have received two grants from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to renovate the five homes. In 2015 we received $250,000 and in 2016, $100,000. The very generous $20,000 donation from Home Depot #6852 made it possible to create a true neighborhood feel and help build a sense of community for our R & R Village Veterans and their families.”
The Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School - West Campus Robotics Team returned home from their first invitation to the 2017 VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky with impressive World and State of Florida rankings. The West Campus Robotics Team was among 1,400 teams representing 30 nations, all of whom worked diligently and competed at competitions for the past year hoping to earn a coveted spot at VEX World. Prior to beginning a grueling week of matches at the Kentucky Exposition Center, the students participated in an Opening Ceremony and the Parade of Nations, which concluded with the Finals and a Closing Award Ceremonies. “Our VEX World success was the culmination of an intense year. Students worked and reworked ideas and strategies to create the best robot. Robotics is like the real world, it is competitive and high tech,” said Fermin Vasquez 7th Grade Advanced Life Science/8th Grade Physical Science, Science Department Chair and PPCMS Robotics Club Co-Sponsor. “Participating in the VEX Robotics World Championship was a once in a lifetime experience for our students, and they experienced firsthand through technology, how the world is much smaller than they thought.”

2nd Annual Mayor’s Chess Challenge
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
T
HE SECOND ANNUAL MAYOR’S CHESS Challenge, hosted by Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis at Club Nineteen at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Country Club, promoted critical and creative thinking and provided lots of fun and prizes! A passionate chess player, Pembroke Pines Mayor Ortis enjoyed playing chess with adults, children and officials from throughout Broward County. Two local mayors joined Mayor Ortis for the chess season finale. Mayor Greg Ross of Cooper City and Mayor Michael Ryan of Sunrise participated in the event along with Pembroke Pines Commissioner Jay Schwartz, School Board Member Patti Good and Principal of the Year Elaine Saef. This year Pembroke Pines added a “ROOK”ie section designated for first timer chess players. A play on words and chess humor at its finest, veteran players know the word ROOK to be a game piece, which can move horizontally and vertically. In the ROOKie area, attendees were free to play on “NO Stress Chess” game boards, large tabletop games, and/or with a giant floor game set. “Mayor Ortis spent time in the ROOKie section giving pointers and sharing a few of his favorite chess tips,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of
10
Pembroke Pines. The author of the “CHESS 4 KIDS” Book and Pembroke Pines resident Lucio Garay attended. Garay teaches chess and taught school in Broward County for twenty years. The first participant to arrive at the Second Annual Pembroke Pines Mayor’s Chess Challenge with a completed chess passport was named CHESS KING “Mauro” for the Day. Young Mauro posed with Mayor Ortis and was presented with a glass chess set. “All participants who traveled the Broward County City Chess Circuit received a stamp in their passport. Chess players who presented a completely stamped chess passport at the Pembroke Pines season finale were recognized and presented with a glass chess set,” added Novo. Power Financial Credit Union was the Main Event Sponsor and gave attendees stuffed animals, metal thermos cups, pizza cutters for family pizza and game night, phone ear plugs, note pads and pens. The event sponsor Club Nineteen Restaurant at Pembroke Lakes Golf and Country Club provided a buffet of healthy treats including an assortment of fruits, juices and coffee. For more information about the Mayor’s Chess Challenge in Pembroke Pines, please contact Tom Joyce at 954392-2127 or email TJoyce@ppines.com. Event hosted by the Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department ppines.com/specialevents The Mayor’s Chess Challenge is a First Move event sponsored by the nonprofit America’s Foundation 4 Chess af4c.org . Internationally, America’s Foundation 4 Chess First Move program can be found in Scotland, England, Kenya, St Lucia, Antigua, Suriname and 26 States in the U.S. where approximately 140,000 students participate in the program.

New Game in Town
P
ICKLEBALL HAS OFFICIALLY COME TO PEMBROKE PINES. BEGINNING AT 8:00 a.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 two Pickleball courts will open at the Pembroke Lakes Tennis and Aquatics Center, located 10500 Taft Street City in Pembroke Pines. Lovers of Pickleball, or the curious, may begin reserving courts for singles or doubles games on June 19, with courts open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During the summer Monday through Friday hours are 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Courts are lighted for evening play. Reservations are a must for the popular game “invented to encourage fun” fifty-two years ago in Bainbridge Island, Washington State. Printed instructions on how to play Pickleball will be available at the Tennis Center and staff will be available to provide Pickleball an overview of the game. The key difference between Tennis and Pickleball is one bounce, which must occur on each side of the net before volleys may begin. Through the years, Pickleball has developed an impressive following due in part to its simplicity. “Pickleball is fun! It is a social game and easy to learn. Aside from having fun and laughing at ourselves, it is a great physical workout. I walk away feeling refreshed,” said Traci Richards, a Pickleball enthusiast who supervises the Pembroke Lakes Tennis and Aquatics Center. “Pickleball has become wildly popular with families and friends, whose interest was piqued in part due to the game’s funny name.” A Pickleball court is 20 foot by 44 foot -- half the size of a tennis court--and is played with a special Pickleball paddle typically made of wood. The Pickleball has holes similar to a wiffle ball and it is larger than a tennis ball. A net divides the court in half and the slower moving ball makes the game ideal for people of all ages and abilities. “Of course competitive players will find ways to notch up the game, but they too will walk away having had fun,” added Richards.

It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. WEN COOKE WAS THE “UNANIMOUS” WINNER AT THE SEVENTH Annual Spelling Bee held at the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus. The competition between the final three contestants was friendly but intense as they listened closely to Spelling Bee Moderator Lily Mazurek, winner of the 2016 Seniors vs. Seniors Spelling Bee and 2016 Lady Pines. Prior to the competition Suzy Felix, Spelling Bee Stage Monitor and Activities Coordinator for The Center, advised the competitors of the rules. Cooke won the 2017 Spelling Bee by spelling the word “unanimous” correctly. Cooke won the 2015 Spelling Bee by spelling “guillotine” correctly. Second Place was awarded to Mary Stephens and Third Place to Martha Schrier, who was crowned 2017 Lady Pines in April. Each winner received a certificate and a cash prize: with first place taking home $50, second Place $30 and third place $20. “The Spelling Bee is a great mind challenging event. Standing on stage can be daunting for some, but once the contest gets going nerves are forgotten,” said Suzy Felix, Spelling Bee Host and Special Activities Coordinator at The Center. Chad Bernstein
The Music Man GUITARS OVER GUNS GUITARSOVERGUNS.ORG BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND:
A renowned musician and teacher, Bernstein has spent much of his life drawing inspiration from music, but it was his sense of community that drew him to become a “social entrepreneur.” Bernstein says growing up in a family that didn’t hide the challenges of the world around him helped him and his brother Max (a Marine) understand their good fortune. “We were always encouraged to be open-minded, to treat all people with respect and empathy, and to enrich our lives by sharing with others, be that experiences, conversation, a meal, or something we have that others may not,” he says of his parents. “Being fortunate enough to have been brought up in a safe neighborhood with a loving, supportive family was not lost on us, and I think that it created a sense of responsibility for us both to give back or pay that forward.”
ABOUT GUITARS OVER GUNS ORGANIZATION (GOGO)
Bernstein first created GOGO as an informal volunteer music mentoring program, aiming to work with youth from underserved areas in Miami, but soon saw it’s potential, formalizing the program and launching at North Miami Middle School in 2008. The idea was born out of a performance Bernstein did with local band Suénalo at a juvenile detention center. “They were a rowdy group and we were unable to reach them through conversation, but when we started playing they were entranced. Our music had elements of funk, salsa, pop, and rock, and when our MC started rapping the kids were hooked,” he says. After using one audience member’s outburst as a catalyst for a song, “the kids were transfixed and there was an amazing exchange that took place ... It was magical and completely elevated us all.” The lightbulb went off for Bernstein. “It was at that point that I realized what kind of unique power music has in connecting us with these youth.” Today, GOGO boasts programs in seven schools and various community centers throughout Miami and Chicago.
THE DETAILS
GOGO relies on the support of not only professional musicians, but community members as well. “We are currently offering donation opportunities that include sponsoring a student, sponsoring a mentor (who will work with 5-10 youth), and even sponsoring school sites,” says Bernstein. “Setting up a monthly donation is one of the best ways to support - our sustainers are the lifeblood of the organization and allow us to keep the programs running. We also accept used musical instruments (guitars, basses, keyboards, drum sets, and sound/production gear).” Beyond financial donations, Bernstein says the musicians who participate are able to channel their own passion into what he calls “a powerful catalyst for change.” Adds Bernstein, “It is truly life-changing and most of our mentors will tell you that they are affected as much as the students by the program.”

THE FUTURE
Bernstein hopes to continue the organization’s growth and is eyeing expansion to New York and Los Angeles in the coming years. For now, he’s concentrating on the 600 students in Miami and Chicago who look to him and his team of passionate musicians to help them navigate oftentimes difficult situations. With the first classes of middle school students now entering college, GOGO is also rolling out GOGO Rise, a mentor program that connects community members with students to continue their mentorship through high school. “In 10 years, I would like to see the program's reach extend nationwide and start to connect youth internationally through the universal language of music. A shared vision of empowering youth to be future leaders through unlocking their creative potential would change the world.”
We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential through the transformation nature of music and the power of mentorship. T hat belief should be shared amongst our most challenged cities and spread deeply.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

T’S NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN how to swim. Just last month a Pembroke Pines resident and his friend drowned after a boat they were in capsized off Dania Beach. The only survivor swam to another vessel. The other two boaters did not know how to swim. We live surrounded by water. For most of my life I did not know how to swim. I do now. I urge everyone to please make swimming lessons a priority in their lives. This was a boating tragedy. With more people hitting the waterways during the summer months, please be cautious. Take the necessary steps to remain safe. Registration for swim lessons can be made at the City of Pembroke Pines Towngate Park, 901 N.W. 155 Avenue, any Monday through Thursday beginning at noon through 4:30 p.m., and on Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. Lessons are offered for children age one through adults. Swimming lessons are held in two-week sessions, Monday through Thursday, with the last session being held on August 21, 2017. Lessons are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors (WSI) and are offered at three Pembroke Pines locations: Pembroke Lakes Pool, 10500 Taft Street, Price Park Pool, 901 NW 208 Avenue and Towngate Pool, 901, N.W. 155 Avenue. For more information about swimming lessons, please call 954-450-6895. The summer months are the perfect time for grilling outdoors. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department offers some tips to keep everyone safe as they grill this season. Never grill indoors – not in the house, camper, tent, or any enclosed area. Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use, and make sure everyone, including the pets, stays away from the grill. Keep the grill out in the open, at least 10 feet away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire. Grills, both charcoal and gas, should not be used underneath wooden overhangs as the fire could flare up into the structure above. Keep the chef safe by using the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill. Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited. Be ready to close the lid and turn off the grill to cut off the fuel if necessary. Keep a fireproof pan under the grill to catch any falling ash or grease. Trim excess fat from meat to avoid flare-ups. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department provides additional safety tips on the city’s website at ppines.com. We also invite everyone to celebrate the 4th of July with us at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds located at 7400 Pines Blvd. The festivities will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The spectacular Fireworks Show will begins at 9 p.m. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Wishing you a very safe and fun summer! From your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

Miramar has truly become a city where families have many options for recreation and entertainment right in our backyard. I encourage all residents to explore what the City has to offer and make the remainder of your summer an active one. For ideas to explore in our parks, please visit http://www.miramarfl.gov/313/Parks-Recreation. We are about to enter into the final months of our fiscal year and Miramar's path continues to be a good one and here are a few reasons why: »» Property Values in Miramar are expected to appreciate by 7% according to Broward County Appraiser »» The number of job opportunities in our city with companies such as Apotex Pharmaceuticals adding 150 positions and retaining 461 of them in Miramar by expanding its U.S. Headquarters and investing $185 million in building a new pharmaceutical headquarters in Miramar. »» United Data Technologies making a $16.5 million capital investment in Miramar and adding 142 jobs. »» Improvements to Shirley Branca park with the addition of the Bandshell are nearly complete When a city is a fun place to live and offers high wage paying jobs, it makes Miramar a desirable place to live and makes it possible for all of us to say, “ Miramar a great place to live, work, visit and play. Relax and Restore at The Cottages of Charleston Harbor BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
I
WOKE UP TO THE SUN TAPPING ON MY window. Grabbing my coffee and sand dollar (a tradition they have there) I stepped outside into the early morning air where I was greeted by a lone rabbit on the beach’s edge and pelicans skimming the water. Fort Sumter’s flag was not yet flying. I made my wish, tossed the sand dollar into the lapping water and so ended my stay at The Cottages. But let’s start at the beginning. Nestled in a corner of Patriot’s Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina are ten adorable cottages, a pool and quaint Tommy Bahamas style clubhouse called The Cottages of Charleston Harbor. The smell of jasmine and the sky blue bicycles lined up on the porch welcomed me in. The pitcher of lemonade and plate of cookies were the perfect introduction to the best couple of days of restoring and renewing my soul. Not that that was my original plan, mind you, but once I saw the screened in porch with a hammock overlooking the water, my original plans went right out those plantation shuttered windows. My sightseeing weekend quickly became my Zen weekend. So much has already been written about all there is to do in Charleston but where does one go to

rejuvenate? Look no further because I have found it. Of course, there is plenty to do in downtown Charleston in the way of sightseeing or eating, or you can paddle board/ kayak on Shem Creek and even take a quick jaunt to the quaint town of Georgetown for lunch but sometimes we just need to stop all the madness and relax. It won’t matter what season you decide to unwind. Each cottage has two bedrooms and three bathrooms, a full kitchen and living room with a fireplace. During the cool months, you can curl up in the hammock with a blanket

or sit by the fireplace in the comfy club chair. In the warmer months, you can lie by the pool or sit in one of the Adirondack chairs on their little beach, watch the boats go by and marvel at the beautiful moon hovering over downtown Charleston at night. My two days were spent doing just that. Each morning I would walk the few steps to the clubhouse and have an awesome complimentary breakfast by the pool or bring it to my room and eat on the porch and reflect. It was the perfect time to write in my journal and catch up on some much needed rest. I would spend hours in my hammock reading and meditating, walking the trail by the cottages getting lost in the quietness or ride my bike to the snow cone stand down the street. By the time I left, I felt like a new person both inside and out. I would encourage anyone looking for a place to totally unwind, a girl’s weekend (there is a Woodhouse Day Spa close by) or a destination wedding, The Cottages on Charleston Harbor is someplace you seriously need to consider. On their brochure it says, “The Escape You Deserve” and no truer words were spoken. Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor. She can be reached at debbiemartinez1@mac.com.
