PAULA ARCILA: MISS CUARENTA Written and performed by Paula Arcila – actress, comedian and radio host - Miss Cuarenta is a comedy that reflects on assuming that age that no woman wants to reach. That age in which on the street they call you SEÑORA; that age in which, if you have not married, they call you SOLTERONA. That terrible age in which, almost without realizing it, your bedside table has been filled with anti-wrinkle creams, sleeping pills... and the San Antonio stamp. GPM Opens First Food Hall in South Florida
G
RANDVIEW PUBLIC MARKET (GPM), THE multi-vendor food hall located within the recently developed hotspot known as the “District” in West Palm Beach, will open its doors to the public Fall 2017. The repurposed mid-century warehouse, measuring 12,000 square feet, will provide a uniquely curated dining and shopping experience from a wide range of local and national purveyors. GPM is fashioned on similar models across the country like NYC’s Chelsea Market and Krog Street Market in Atlanta; old buildings remodeled to create a thriving, community-driven town center with a focus on small and/or independent businesses. “Trends have shifted from a culture where shoppers and diners are willing to drive from location to location to make purchases and dine out, towards a one stop solution with anauthentic communal market feel,” says Chris Vila, a Palm Beach native and founder of Vila Built, a renovation and development company and the owner/operator of GPM. “West Palm Beach is experiencing growth as a community through development, the arts, and an influx of young professionals, and we wanted to be a part of it. For GPM we carefully curated select vendors that are as excited as we are to be involved and doing business in

such a vibrant, flourishing community.” While the concept of a communal market is not new, it’s the first of its kind in South Florida. “GPM will attract a variety of customers, who will be able to meet friends for coffee, pick up fresh prepared foods and local goods, or purchase fresh ingredients for dinner that evening,” said Vila. The 12 independent food purveyors are a mix of established local brands with loyal followings, and two concepts from nationally recognized New York-based hospitality company, Three Kings Restaurant Group, comprised of Top Chef alum Dale Talde, and his partners David Massoni and John Bush. The Three Kings will open Clare’s, a premier chicken joint, as well as The Corner, a
Detroit-style pizza spot. Other food vendors will include Celis Produce, a boutique farm-to-table grocer; Grace’s Fine Foods, a full-service butcher offering an array of heritage breed meats cut to order, as well as daily fresh sausage and prepared foods; Rabbit Coffee, serving cold brew coffee, espresso drinks, teas, bagels and bialys every morning; a Taiwanese shaved ice-cream, bubble-tea, and breakfast cereal bar; Olive Oil of the World, an Italian specialty shop selling oils, cheeses, pastas and olives and Zipitios, serving quick bites including tacos and pupusas. Little Red Truck, which The Three Kings team will also operate, will fulfill the Market’s bar needs, providing beer, wine and craft cocktail service. Non-food retailers will include Flower & Fringe, a unique and whimsical floral studio handling styling, events, and on-site workshops; and Quinn, who will curate a selection of hard goods including books, candles, gifts and unique products. Located within the GPM footprint, The Loading Dock and The Living Room – the first outdoor, the second indoor – will provide seating, welcoming guests to grab a seat, dine, imbibe, hang with friends, check email (free Wi-Fi0, meet and mingle. Both spots will double as unique event spaces, perfect for formal or informal networkers, meetings, luncheons, etc. Grandview Public Market: Coming this fall to 1401 Clare Ave., West Palm Beach. The market will open daily from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. To learn more, visit www. grandviewpublic.com.

Lyft To Offer Services to Seniors Across South Florida

rehabilitation. Through this partnership, residents who own a smartphone are taught how to download the Lyft app and use it to request rides. In addition, the community's front desk can use Lyft Concierge to request a ride for residents who do not have access to a smartphone. "In working with Brookdale, we have the opportunity to provide seniors with more transportation options and show the community how Lyft can improve lives, reduce isolation, increase independence and improve the overall experience of aging," said Samuel Cohen, general manager of Lyft in Florida. "We're thrilled to expand this service to residents at Brookdale West Palm Beach and Lake Seminole Square, where we know members of the community will greatly benefit from it." Research shows that people 65 and above who no longer drive, make 65 percent fewer trips for family, social and religious activities. Eighty-two percent of Americans in that age group worry about becoming stranded and unable to get around if they need to stop driving.
YFT, THE FASTEST-GROWING ONdemand transportation service in the United States, is partnering with Brookdale Senior Living to offer service to residents of Brookdale West Palm Beach and Lake Seminole Square, located in West Palm Beach and Seminole, Florida, respectively. This pilot program is currently offered in about 10 Florida Brookdale locations. For seniors who may have had to depend on others to visit family, to go to an annual appointment, or even just to catch a movie, Lyft is giving them increased independence. While both senior living communities provide scheduled transportation to doctor's appointments, shopping centers and cultural and social opportunities, the Lyft partnership rounds out mobility options by offering residents the ability to go to destinations of their choice at the spur of the moment. Brookdale West Palm Beach and Lake Seminole Square are continuing care retirement communities (CCRC) that provide independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer's and dementia care, and skilled nursing and

Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

5 Ways To Help Kids Through Hurricane Season

ITH A SEASON OF STORMS APPROACHING SOUTH FLORIDA IT’S more important than ever to be as prepared as possible… and that means taking into account even the youngest members of the family. Here are five suggestions courtesy of Miami Children’s Health System to help your child through the 2017 hurricane season: 1. Create a family emergency plan. Sit down with your children and discuss where you would go if you need to leave your home. Be sure to write down everyone's cell phone number - parents, children, families and friends - and put them into your child's phone. 2. Prepare for the storm. If a hurricane is heading for South Florida. have your child help with the preparations, such as bringing in lawn furniture, checking flashlight batteries, getting out candles and packing a three-day supply of water, medications and nonperishable foods. Remind teens to fill up their cars with gas. 3. Watch television together - in limited amounts. Television is a good way to get information in advance of a storm. But watching too much news coverage can increase a child's fears. It's better to watch the news together and then switch off the TV, particularly if a storm is still several days away. Remember that graphic images of storm damage can be upsetting to young children. 4. Get ready to go. If you family needs to evacuate, have your child help with packing. Be sure to include a few special items such a teddy bear, photos or portable gaming device. Your son or daughter can also help gather food, water and any medications for the family pet - a responsibility that can help the child feel more in control. Remember, children take cues from adult emotions, so be sure to remain calm. 5. Work together after the storm. Once the storm has passed, your children can help pick up tree limbs or other debris that blew into your yard. If there is serious damage to the home, living arrangements may need to be altered, such as sharing a bedroom. Once things settle down, set aside time to talk with your children about how they feel. Emotional trauma can take months to heal at any age. To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

IGH-END HOME FURNISHINGS AND INTERIOR DESIGN firm, Robb & Stucky, in partnership with Douglas Elliman and Aleren Boutique, recently hosted “Team Victoria’s Runway” on Wednesday, August 16, at its Coral Gables showroom, located at 4711 Le Jeune Road. Nearly 200 guests attended the evening of fashion and fun, which successfully raised $8,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event featured a fashion show starring 10-year-old Victoria, a brave patient of the hospital. Victoria has been battling a rare brain tumor, several major surgeries and radiation treatment during the past two years. With her incredible strength of spirit, grace, poise and persistence in the face of tremendous adversity, Victoria has made it her mission to help other children and give back to the hospital that has helped her: St. Jude. The “Team Victoria’s Runway” event served as a kick-off fundraiser to the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer in September.

5 QUESTIONS WITH…
Dr. Tom Carpenter
CREATOR AND INVENTOR OF STAND CORRECTED
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
A
MERICANS SEND AN ESTIMATED 2 TRILLION TEXTS PER DAY AND SPEND countless hours hunched over their devices—with our necks, shoulders, chests, backs and arms paying the price. “I’ve treated many, many people suffering from painful neck, back, and shoulder problems due to poor posture, frequently caused by the overuse of these tech devices,” says Dr. Tom Carpenter, a Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Chiropractor. Looking for an easy, affordable and effective solution, Carpenter invented Stand Corrected, a stretching device designed to counterbalance the demands of the dreaded tech neck. We spoke to Carpenter about posture, inspiration and, of course, Stand Corrected.
LET’S TALK ABOUT TECH NECK…
Anyone who suffers from chronic or even occasional back, shoulder and neck pain knows that it diminishes quality of life—sometimes for years! Over the last three decades, I have worked with people suffering with these issues. The constant usage of smartphones and pads, laptops, video games and so forth is affecting millions of people’s posture and contributing to their pain. With no end in sight for the continued use of these tech devices, solutions need to be found for the relief of this ongoing postural stress.
WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF STAND CORRECTED?
Regularly stretching makes a tremendous difference. But according to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the #1 reason people don’t stretch and exercise regularly is that they don’t feel they have enough time. So I came up with Stand Corrected, which takes very little time (minutes!) to be effective, is easy to use and is portable so it can be taken anywhere—school, office, vacation or just at home. I wanted to come up with something people would actually use every day. And most importantly, something that I believe would really help them.
WHO IS YOUR MAIN AUDIENCE FOR THE PRODUCT?
Anyone who spends prolonged periods of time looking down with their shoulders rolled in, as long as there are no underlying health issues that would prevent its’ use: Office workers sitting at a desk staring at a computer, laptop or pad;Teenagers texting from a smartphone; Dentists, massage therapists and chiropractors leaning over patients all day; Gardeners bending over to dig in the dirt; Even grandmothers who spend hours knitting sweaters and blankets. The list is endless. Most of us look down too much and would benefit from Stand Corrected.
HOW DOES STAND CORRECTED DIFFER FROM OTHER PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET FOR POSTURE CORRECTION?
Portability, simplicity, effectiveness and affordability. As mentioned, there are certainly stretches and exercises that can improve posture--I’ve taught many of them to patients in exercise classes geared towards helping people improve their strength, flexibility and posture. But again, there is the time factor. There are other devices that address these problems--I’ve utilized them over the years. However, I could never find one that was able to simultaneously help in stretching the shoulders back, encourage the normal 40 degree forward neck curve (which we’re supposed to have), correct upper body posture in general, and at the same time provide portability, ease of use, effectiveness, as well as being inexpensive. Stand Corrected addresses all the issues making it the easiest way to improve posture and alleviate the pain associated with it.
CAN CHILDREN USE THE PRODUCT (IF SO, WHAT AGES?) AND HOW AND WHEN DO YOU RECOMMEND USING IT?
Stand Corrected is designed for people 13 years and older. Children 12 and under should not use it. To be clear, you don’t actually wear Stand Corrected. Instead, it is designed as stretching device that only needs to be used for a minute or two at a time. It can be used several times during the day depending on how often and for how long body posture is negatively affected by looking down and rolling the shoulders inward. And, despite its’ name, Stand Corrected can be used sitting or standing, and provides the same benefits in either position. For more information on Stand Corrected please visit standcorrected.co 28

How to Reduce Sweating Problems at School - From Kinder Through College Age 9 MYTHS AND TRUTHS ABOUT EXCESSIVE SWEATING AMONG STUDENTS BY MERILEE KERN, MBA
A
MID ALL THINGS “BACK to school”—whether in the elementary, secondary or collegiate systems—there’s a common but hidden scourge: excessive sweating. In fact, a national survey conducted by the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHhS)—the scholars of sweat—shows as many as one in five teens suffers from extreme, uncomfortable, embarrassing, debilitating, and emotionally-devastating sweating. “Excessive sweating is a dermatological disorder that can cause an otherwise healthy person to produce up to five times more sweat than is normal or necessary,” Lisa J Pieretti, Executive Director of IHhS. “Symptoms often start in one’s youth, which can already be an awkward time of growth and development. To that point, IHhS co-founder Dr. David Pariser urges that, while hyperhidrosis is the number one dermatological disease in terms of negatively affecting a person's quality-of-life, it’s also number one in having the most positive impact when treated. “When hyperhidrosis is caught early, the life of a young person can be transformed for the better in a multitude of ways," he says. With that in mind, the first step toward providing solutions for students who sweat excessively is to bust some common myths and misconceptions with facts from the experts at the IHhS, including these:
MYTH: SWEATY PEOPLE ARE OUT-OF-SHAPE, NERVOUS OR HAVE HYGIENE ISSUES.
Truth: The average person has 2 to 4 million sweat glands.
Sweat is essential to human survival and serves as the body’s coolant, protecting it from overheating. Many athletes actually sweat more than other people because their bodies have become very efficient at keeping cool. Meanwhile, people with hyperhidrosis (which causes overactive sweat glands) sweat excessively regardless of mood, weather, or activity level—often producing 4 or 5 times more sweat than is considered “normal”.
the same over time. This was consistent across all the different age groups, from youngsters to older adults.
MYTH: HYPERHIDROSIS IS “JUST” A SUMMER THING, OR IT’S AT LEAST WORSE DURING THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS.
Truth: Research from the IHhS also shows that profuse
MYTH: KIDS WITH HYPERHIDROSIS DON’T SUFFER WITH SCHOOLSPECIFIC ACTIVITIES.
Truth: In a recent 2017 study, 63 percent of those with
hyperhidrosis reported interference in the performance of tasks at school or work due to their condition. Another study found that children and teens with hyperhidrosis can have difficulties manipulating writing utensils, keeping school work dry, gripping bicycle handlebars, and using a computer mouse.
MYTH: KIDS WILL GROW OUT OF HYPERHIDROSIS.
Truth: Contrary to popular belief, research shows that
hyperhidrosis does not go away or decrease with age. In fact, in one recent IHhS study, 88 percent of respondents said their excessive sweating had gotten worse or stayed 32

sweating is not simply dictated by the time of year. The majority of patients in one survey indicated that their sweating bothers them equally, no matter the season.
MYTH: ANTIPERSPIRANTS ARE FOR UNDERARMS ONLY.
Truth: Think outside the pits! You can glide, stick, spray,
and roll-on nearly anywhere that sweating is a problem (think hands, feet, face, back, chest, and even groin.) Be smart and talk to your dermatologist first before applying an antiperspirant to sensitive areas and test new products on small areas of skin first.
MYTH: LIKE CAFFEINE, ANTIPERSPIRANTS ARE BEST USED IN THE MORNING.
Truth: Pick a p.m. perk! Skip the bedtime espresso but do
use your antiperspirant in the evening as well as in the morning. Sweat production is at its lowest at night, giving the active ingredients in antiperspirants a better chance to get into your pores and block perspiration when the sun comes up and you really get moving.
