Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

Taking Flight
KevinDiemar P R ES I D E N T, U N I T Y J E TS BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND
As the President of Unity Jets, a boutiquestyle private jet firm, it may seem as though Diemar has a front row seat to spending, but the Miami-native says giving is actually closer to his style. Inspired by his grandfather, Bill Schwartz, who served in the Navy, as Mayor of his North Carolina town and in leadership positions in the United Way and Kiwanis Club, Diemar’s community service began at a young age. “As a child I had a great role model,” he says of Schwartz. Those lessons served Diemar well recently, as he used his unique business position to full advantage postHurricane Maria, sending supply-filled flights to Puerto Rico.
FRIENDLY SKIES
Diemar says the idea originated quite simply. “We got the idea because we were able to secure a humanitarian flight into St. Croix, and in coordinating the flight we asked one of the St. Croix airport employees we were dealing with if we could somehow help her by sending something along with the passengers that were going down to bring back evacuees,” he says. When she mentioned that after days of eating MREs (military ready-to-eat meals) some simple fast food would life their spirits the team jumped on the idea. “She requested 10 burgers. We went ahead and sent fast food meals for 30,” says Diemar. “Their response of appreciation was so overwhelming that we realized what a difference we could make.”
NEXT LEVEL Helping is infectious...when others see the good and joy companies are providing they want to get involved. Every little bit that anyone or any company can do to help is a step in the right direction to making our community a better place.”
16
PPCN-2017-11.indd 16
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | November 2017
From there, the Unity Jets team jumped to action, working with both private citizens in Aguadilla and organizations such as Unidos por Puerto Rico in San Juan to fill empty flights with supplies as they headed down to rescue those leaving the island. Diemar and wife Jenny (no stranger to community service due to her own leadership roles with JAFCO) filled two large SUVs with supplies and reached out to friends and family via Facebook for even more. “Everyone felt the need to contribute, and wanted to help, but didn’t know how, and we were giving them the ability to do just that,” he says. “We bought much needed items, such as food, flashlights, fans, batteries, sunscreen, baby formula, baby food, diapers and wipes, pet food, toilet paper and countless other desperately sought-after items.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Diemar’s plan is still in action, he says, and he continues to encourage other companies to find ways to make a difference via their own specific opportunities. “With every plane that we know flying down, we inquire to see if there is room to load on supplies,” he says. “We have been able to make approximately six runs down with goods to help those in need and we continue to search out opportunities.”

FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES
I
ASK YOU…WHAT ALLITERATIVE CITY IN BROWARD COUNTY has been named one of the USA’S Best City to live in? (The trees in its name help?) You may know the answer if you watch Jeopardy. However, the contestants did not. Last month on Jeopardy, our great city was the answer to that question. “What is… The City of Pembroke Pines.” It’s no wonder we are on the nation’s radar. It has been another wonderful year for all of us in Pembroke Pines, and I want to send season’s greetings to all Pembroke Pines residents and businesses that make this a very special City in which to live and work. One of this year’s highlights was the opening of the Charles F. Dodge City Center, which is home to the New City Hall along with a Civic Center for plays, conferences, small concerts and a variety of special events for all residents and visitors to enjoy. We’ve also enjoyed special exhibits at The Frank Art Gallery and remembered our Veterans at our new Memorial Park. We also experienced the turmoil of Hurricane Irma and are grateful that we did not feel her full force. Due to Hurricane Irma, however, I want to remind everyone that the Pooches in Pines second annual Fur Ball was rescheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2018, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center,
601 City Center Way. As you know, Pooches in Pines is a non-profit community group of dedicated volunteers in Pembroke Pines that helps unite dogs found by the Pembroke Pines Police with their owners. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular event. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there to show support for this worthy cause. For more information or to purchase tickets or be a sponsor, please visit poochesinpines. com and click the “Fur Ball” link. There are many other exciting events planned throughout the city during this holiday season, including our annual SnowFest, Sundaes with Santa and our Holiday Open House at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center. I hope you get a chance to participate and have fun with family and friends. You can find many more activities and information on our website at ppines.com and on our facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines. I have great hopes for a new year in which all of our best expectations are met. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season for all of you, with a happy and prosperous New Year! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-4501020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

FROM THE MAYOR
Greetings Miramarians… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR
H
A P P Y H O L I DAYS Miramarians! First Lady Angela and I wish everyone Seasons Greetings. The Holiday Season is one of our favorite times of year in the city. It is when we celebrate our religious and cultural traditions and there is nothing better than visiting or hosting family and friends during this season. One of the benefits of living in Miramar is that there is always something to do. The City of Miramar has a number of events during this month and I invite you all to participate. The Miramar Cultural Center will have a number of productions this year including Ballet Etudes' The Nutcracker, hopefully you will be able to attend. Here's a link to the Center's Season, it is a wonderful place to help bring in the Holiday Season, MiramarCulturalCenter.org I also would like to provide a summary of our city’s accomplishments as presented during my annual State of the City Address. Miramar’s economy continues to strive. Did you know our city’s unemployment rate is only 3.7%? Did you know that over 1600 jobs averaging $70,000 per year are coming to our city? Pretty amazing when you consider it was only a few years ago cities
across the nation struggled to jumpstart their economies after the recession. I am happy to announce that not only has Miramar recovered but we are adding high paying jobs due to, for example, the arrival of Canada’s largest pharmaceutical company Apotex. Their US headquarters will be right here in Miramar investing over $185 Million. Adding to our progress are our continued property valuations. For the third year in a row, Miramar has averaged 8% or higher in property value appreciation. What this means is that Miramar remains attractive for businesses and our homes are in high demand. So, as we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and other cultural events during the holidays, let’s give thanks for our blessings and our successes. Our neighbors in the Caribbean and in this state are still suffering from this past hurricane season. The holidays will be different for them this year. Let us all keep them in our prayers and send help whenever you can. It could have been Miramar but for Grace we were spared and for that I give thanks. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

3 Saving Tips To Help You Prepare For Unexpected Expenses
I
T HAPPENS TO EVERYBODY: THE DREADED, UNEXPECTED BIG EXPENSE – major car repairs, a broken air conditioner, a plumbing problem, a sick pet, a computer crash, a dental emergency. Often these misfortunes come without warning, and they can throw you for a financial tailspin if you’re not prepared with ample savings. Thus, it’s prudent to develop and sustain a savings plan that will help you endure emergency expenses. Financial discipline over the long haul is the key.

“It’s kind of like being on a diet,” says Ben Schrock, an Investment Adviser Representative and president of B.A. Schrock Financial Group. “It’s the discipline of sticking with that diet over the long term that will pay off in the end. If you are out to eat and you see your favorite pie or dessert, you might think, ‘What’s one piece going to do?’ Well, that one piece turns into two, three, four, and by the end of the diet you’re back where you started. It’s the same thing with investing and saving. I think saving and investing are very much psychological. It’s all about creating a habit of saving.” Here, Schrock gives three tips for developing a disciplined savings strategy that will help with those the unexpected expenses: 1. Create a budget and don’t deviate. You have to expect that the unexpected emergencies will come up. You should prepare a budget accordingly, at least ballparking possible emergencies aside from your normal monthly bills. “The more you stick to the budget and put some aside for those rainy days, the better off you’ll be when it pours,” Schrock says. “Those people who may have had a late start saving or who have dipped into an account here or there are sometimes a little more challenging to steer back on the right course.” 2. Make savings the emergency fund. Savings is your foundational backbone, your go-to source in case of emergency. Thus, you want to steadily build it so you don’t tap into your retirement funds – and pay a penalty on top – when the unexpected expense happens. Setting up different savings accounts for certain types of expenses is a good idea, rather than raiding one general savings account for all expenses. “What this will allow you to do is when things get tight or that emergency pops up, you’ll have a smart place to take out some money,” Schrock says. 3. Make it automatic. A sure way to stay on track with saving habits is to earmark a certain amount in your paycheck to be set aside, similar to a 401(k). You can start with a small amount of your monthly income, and then add to it. “Seeing that sacrifice on your check each month brings peace of mind,” Schrock says. “Inevitably, your car needs a repair or an appliance breaks down,” Schrock says. “If you stick with a savings strategy, emergencies won’t set you back significantly.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

5 Ways Exercise Helps Beat the Blues
O
CTOBER WAS DEPRESSION AWARENESS MONTH, MAKING NOW and the holidays a good time to focus on overcoming the blues and keeping depression away. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, around 16 million adults each year experience the most common type of depression, which is Major Depressive Disorder. The disorder is characterized by having at least five of the symptoms, in which at least one of them is an overwhelming feeling of sadness or a loss of interest and pleasure in most usual activities. The good news for those who would like to keep depression at bay or who are looking to beat the blues is that they may need look no further than consistently exercising. “Making exercise a consistent part of your life has some amazing benefits,” says Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc. (also the strength and conditioning coach for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics). “Those who engage in exercise regularly feel the difference it can make in one’s life. It can impact everything from how you see yourself to how well you sleep at night. It’s that powerful.” Before anyone cringes and says they don’t have time to fit in exercising, it’s important to know that even a little bit can go a long way. New research published in the October 2017 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry shares details from a landmark study conducted on nearly 34,000 Norwegians. What researchers found was that even small amounts of exercise can protect against depression, regardless of age or gender. They report that sedentary lifestyles are becoming the norm around the world, and depression rates are growing. What’s more, their research showed that those who don’t exercise at all have a 44 percent increased chance of developing depression. They found that the mental health benefits of exercise are found within the first hour of exercise each week, showing that even giving an hour per week to exercise does a world of good.

1. Natural chemicals. When you exercise, your brain releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins. Those endorphins are a natural opiate-like chemical that acts as a pain reliever, reduces stress, and helps people be able to sleep better. 2. Clears the mind. Exercising is a great way to help alleviate worries and anxiety. Those who may be worrying about something or having a difficult emotional time can engage in exercise and find they feel a lot better by the time they are done with the session. 3. New connections. According to Harvard Medical School, exercising spurs the release of proteins called neurotrophic or growth factors, which cause nerve cells to grow and make new connections. This helps to lead to improvements in brain functioning. The exercising supports nerve cells in the hippocampus, which helps to relieve depression. 4. Better image. Most people who engage in exercise see a difference in the mirror and in the way their clothes fit, and they like it. The changes they see can be uplifting and give them more confidence. 5. Weight loss. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 43% of adults with depression are obese, and adults who have depression are more likely to be obese. Exercising regularly helps people lose weight and be able to better maintain a healthy weight. “There are so many good reasons to exercise and not one good one to avoid it,” says Walls. “I work with many people and I see the difference that even a little exercise per week can do for them. Get the endorphins flowing and see for yourself how great you start feeling!” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

Trick or Treat in the Pines The “Trick or Treat” date change in Pembroke Pines may have just scared in perfectly cool and breezy weather for the enjoyment of 1,500 children and their parents who attended the Halloween event, Booville, on The Plaza, of The Charles F. Dodge City Center. Originally scheduled for October 28, Booville had to be rescheduled due to impending rainy weather. In just three days’ time, the City of Pembroke Pines Special Events team pulled off the tremendous feat of rescheduling vendors, volunteers and staff plus, securing a new venue and getting the word out about the new date. On Monday, October 30, 2017 over 35 Trick or Treat stations, a Pumpkin Patch, an Outdoor Movie screen and Fall Themed Photo stations were set up all over The Plaza for the 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. event. Inside City Center, children and adults alike-continued Trick or Treating, played Halloween games, participated in activities and had more photo opportunities. The costume contest drew standing room only crowds who cheered for their favorite character. “Dressed alike parent(s) and children were very popular this year,” said Special Events Coordinator Francie Novo, who coordinated the fast-paced event relocation. As darkness fell, families settled in to watch “Toy Story of Terror” on a 20 foot high screen, while others dashed from candy station to candy station. Those interested in something more than candy were able to purchase food and drinks at the City Center concession. “We participate in the Teal Pumpkin project, a program sponsored by The Food Allergy Research and Education Foundation to educate the public about food allergies in children,” said Novo. Children were able to identify allergy safe Trick or Treat stations by the Teal Pumpkin and sign. “Pembroke Pines Booville has always been known as a fun time and a safe place to trick or treat. Adopting the Teal Pumpkin project has made Halloween more enjoyable and safe for every child,” Novo said. “This year’s event was amazing! The weather we had tonight was perfect, and our team of volunteers and staff made it possible to turn the unexpected date and venue change into the best Trick or Treat ever!”
