GET HEALTHY

1 8 WAY S TO G E T (A ND S TAY) HE A LT H Y IN 2 018

1

GET CRUCIFEROUS.

When Dr. Oz says it’s his favorite food you better sit up and take notice. The TV doc and health expert has been spouting the benefits of broccoli for years, even citing broccoli sprouts as the new kale for 2018, telling fans that it contains 10-to-100-times the cancer-fighting compounds of “adult” broccoli.

5

GET TECHNO W/ YOUR SLEEP.

Sure, shutting down your smartphones are a key to restful sleep but what if those same devices could enhance your nighttime benefits? Smart mattresses can now analyze REM cycles, wake you at the optimal time and cool your bed down for the perfect sleep climate. For those looking for a less pricey alternative, apps like SleepBot can give you the info you crave.

HEAD OUTSIDE.

2

6

GOOGLE MORINGA.

3

7

Soak up that Vitamin D in order to fight everything from the flu to heart disease, reduce depression (a study found Vitamin D deficiency was more common in people who were experiencing anxiety and depression) and even boost weight loss.

Forget turmeric, the word on health influencer’s lips in 2018 is moringa. Eaten by ancient Greeks and Romans, the leaves have been used for centuries in medicine and are rich in antioxidants. Look for it to show up in everything from nutrition bars to juices and kombucha. Even the oil is beginning to make an appearance in beauty products.

4

HACK YOUR DNA.

Deep dive into your own heritage with kits from Ancestry. com and 23andMe. With just a simple saliva sample, lab experts can email you information on your ancestry composition and genetic health risks. Some companies can even connect you to long lost relatives and deliver wellness reports on everything from sweet vs. salty preferences to lactose intolerance and, yes, a unibrow.

16

TRY THAI.

9

EMBRACE TRANSPARENCY.

From calorie labels to GMOs and Fair Trade certifications, companies are now more transparent than ever with what they’re putting on the shelves. Whole Foods has committed to making sure all products are tracked to sustainable sources, while 7-11 is offering sustainable coffee and even McDonald's is planning to grow their sustainably sourced product list.

10

TURN IT UP.

Download some good advice with the help of podcasts. East to listen to (in the car, while you work out, on your Echo...) podcasts are a simple way to ingest health advice while on the go. With dishes that inspire scientific study, Thai cuisine brings health benefits via fresh herbs and spices such as turmeric, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, and fresh chilies and pass on immune-boosting and disease-fighting power. Lemongrass, in particular can help with flus and colds, fevers, headache and arthritis. Try Atchana’s East/ West Kitchen for a local Thai kick.

GIVE YOUR GUT SOME LOVE.

If you haven’t yet dived in to the world of Kombucha, expect to be inundated in 2018. The gut-friendly beverage, made up of fermented tea, is bigger and better than ever, with small-batch brewers and big-name companies competing for shelf space at your local grocery store.

JUST DISCONNECT.

While tech can make our lives easier, it can also add a lot of unwanted stress. 2018 brings the evolution of the disconnect, with restaurants and clubs enlisting a “No Phone” policy and hotels bragging about their lack of Wi-Fi to solace-seeking travelers. Head over to Hipcamp.com to find and book unique experiences on ranches, nature preserves, farms, vineyards, and public campgrounds across the U.S.

Rosacea?

11

TOSS THOSE CHEMICALS.

2018 is all about ingredients and that means everything from food to beauty. With more and more small brands popping up to tout natural and organic ingredients it’s easier than ever to cut down the chemicals and pick up healthy alternatives to skincare and makeup everywhere from Target to Sephora.

12

PUT DOWN THE FORK.

Intermittent fasting isn’t going anywhere, with the trend kicking up in 2018 thanks to growing research that it can improve long- and short-term health. Scientists are debunking the myth that it’s just about weight loss by proving benefits such as improved digestion and a reduction in inflammation.

13

JUST SAY OM.

It’s easier than ever to reap the benefits of mindfulness and meditation. The Calm app offers users guided meditations for every level, relaxing music options and even sleep stories to help keep insomnia at bay, while Innergy meditation studio on Miami Beach lets stressed South Floridians drop in for classes at their will.

GET PERSONAL WITH YOUR RUNNING SHOES.

Just months ago, Brooks Running Company announced a partnership with HP Inc. and Superfeet to introduce the first performance running shoe created based on an individual’s unique biomechanics. Available via special order, the shoes will work off of 3D foot scans to combine foot pressure measurements, movement analysis of the runner’s joints, and personal experience preferences.

DRINK UP.

They say real beauty is on the inside, so it makes sense that beauty powders would take flight with the forever young. Companies like The Beauty Chef, Moon Juice and HUM are packing powders and dusts that dissolve into tea and water and promise a true glow from within.

16

FIND YOUR GROUP.

Ranking at #2 on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual survey of worldwide fitness trends, group training is the perfect option for fitness enthusiasts who need a little support and accountability with their workout. Try Zumba (offered at many local community centers and dance studios) or a HIIT class for your group fix.

17

RETHINK YOUR YOGA.

Sure, traditional forms of the age-old discipline are still popular, but extreme yoga classes like beer yoga (yes, poses involve “beer salutations”), naked yoga (you get the picture) and cat yoga are becoming less gimmick and more the norm.

18

CLEAR YOUR AIR.

A Pinterest analysis of 2017 saw a 270 percent increase in “saves” for air purifiers and air purifying plants. Looking to jump in? Though there is little scientific evidence the purifiers improve general health, it has been shown that breathing polluted air can exacerbate asthma, allergies, heart disease, and other medical conditions. Look for garden mums, spider plants and focus among others.

Which Fitness Trends to Leave Behind in 2018 and Which Ones to Embrace

F

ITNESS MAY BE SOMETHING THAT STAYS consistent, but the trends surrounding it tend to change with the times. Gone are the popular days of the hula hoop, vibration belts, and Jane Fonda home workouts. There are new fitness trends that emerge in their places and ones that we should embrace in order to get the most out of striving to reach and maintain our fitness goals. Knowing which ones to leave behind and which ones to embrace can make a big difference in helping people be active in 2018. “Just because it’s a fitness trend doesn’t mean that it’s healthy or something that will help you reach your goals,” explains Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc., who is also the strength and conditioning coach for the WNBA Washington Mystics. “Oftentimes, the fitness trends should be left behind and people need to stick to the basics, which usually remain constant over time. These will help you stay focused and get fit.” Millions of people make fitness goals when the New Year rolls in, but within a month the vast majority tend to abandon them. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that only around 21 percent of adults get the recommended amount of physical activity, which is around 150 minutes per week. This is concerning to health professionals, because the benefits of being physically active are well documented. According to the CDC, they include tending to live longer, as well as having lower risks for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, and some cancers.

20

Walls has seen the fitness trends come and go over the years as she works with people to help them meet their goals. Being in such a position, she knows what works, what doesn’t, and what people can do to be more effective at reaching and maintaining their fitness goals. Here are the top fitness trends she recommends be left behind and embraced for 2018: »» Stop calling an exercise session "working out.” Change your mind frame to training. Going for a "workout" is a single session, and standing alone, it accomplishes nothing. Phrasing a single session as part of your training implies this is one bit of a much larger goal/plan. »» Stop being afraid of getting strong. Strength is never a weakness, and in the broader scheme of things will allow you to age gracefully and reduce injuries over your lifetime. In the short term, strength training will keep you healthy, fit, and looking (often decades) younger than you actually are. »» Stop focusing on setting only superficial goals. Try to link goal setting to deep, meaningful achievements. Getting in shape for a wedding is fine, but should not be the endpoint, rather it's just the first milestone on a lifetime of health and wellness. »» Stop following fitness trends. Instead, keep an eye on trends, and add in new activities to spice up your regular routine that should be composed of tried and true activities, such as strength training with free weights, aerobic activity, etc. »» Embrace a goal of competing in something.

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | January 2018

Committing to a competition of some kind is a great way to supercharge your motivation and consistency. Find something that interests you, such as a 5K, marathon, rock climbing, tennis tournament, etc. »» Embrace consistency. One of the biggest hurdles to obtaining fitness is being consistent with your efforts. It’s important to hold yourself accountable so that you continue your efforts for the whole year, not just the first couple of weeks of the year. »» Embrace the idea of taking care of yourself. Many people say they don’t exercise because they don’t have the time. Putting your health and fitness first is crucial. When you are at your best, you will be better at everything else you do in life. Prioritize your tasks and don’t waver from taking care of you first. »» Embrace the idea of finding something you enjoy doing. There are millions of people who say they find exercise to be boring. In all likelihood it’s because they haven’t found what they enjoy. Try different types of physical activity until you find things that you actually enjoy, so you will stick with it. “There are other things that people may be doing that they know they need to leave behind or embrace. This is the time to get honest with yourself,” says Walls. “You can make 2018 the year you reach your fitness goals. It’s all a matter of making the commitment and seeing it through. There’s no trend or gimmick that will help you with that. Only committing to real activity and attainable goals will do that.”

JOIN THE ORANGE NATION ORANGETHEORY BRINGS IT’S UNIQUE BRAND OF FITNESS TO THE PINES COMMUNITY

G

ARY HIRSCH, OWNER OF SEVERAL Orangetheory locations believes in the mission, vision and values that the Orange Nation has inspired worldwide. The workout is different everyday. The program, based around group training that includes treadmills, WaterRowers and floor equipment including dumbbells, benches, TRX suspension trainers, medicine balls, BOSU trainers and Ab Dolly’s, has created a revolutionary approach to optimal fitness that delivers extraordinary results. So what is it all about?

WHAT MAKES THE ORANGETHEORY FITNESS WORKOUT DIFFERENT?

“We provide participants with a heart rate monitor upon arrival to class. The optimal percentage of your maximum heart rate is shown on large TV's throughout the studio, which helps the coach personalize your workout. Our goal is to get students working at 84 percent or more of their maximum heart rate for at least 12 minutes. Heart rate based interval training is proven to burn more postworkout," says Clara Assael, Head Coach at the Pembroke Pines location.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL CLASS LOOK LIKE?

“A session includes three components: treadmill interval training - specifically designed for Orangetheory fitness with a flex deck that creates less impact on your body, indoor rowing, and weight room for resistance training. These ‘Orange 60’ sessions are open to all fitness levels. Our program is specifically designed for everyone, from power-walkers to elite performance athletes. There is a coach in the class at all times giving instruction and making sure that their students are training at the correct level,” says Lisa Clinton, Studio Manager at the Pembroke Pines location.

WHAT IF I HAVE AN INJURY AND HAVEN’T WORKED OUT IN A LONG TIME?

Ricky Ruiz, OTF Coach.

22

“Our coaches undergo rigorous instruction to help students get the most out of the program. They are trained to give exercise options to those who are injured or not familiar with the exercise routine. First time guests are asked to come in a minimum of 30 minutes prior to their first session to meet their coach, get a full explanation of

the workout and get fitted for their heart rate monitor,” says [Clara]. The combination of group training, monitoring and it’s signature “afterburn” (also known as post exercise oxygen consumption) has helped Orangetheory establish a new standard for what is possible when it comes to exercise and physical fitness. The one-hour full body workout focuses on endurance, strength, power and/or ESP, while heart-rate based interval training allows students to burn more calories post-workout. What are you currently doing for fitness? Come on in and try a complimentary class and start your new year off right. You owe it to yourself to be the best you can be. Make 2018 your best fitness year yet. Orangetheory Pembroke Pines is located at 14918 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33027. FROM THE MAYOR

Hello Miramar! BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR

F

PERCEPTUAL T R ACK ING A COLOR SPACE A VISUAL IMMERSION OF COLOR AND FORM INTERACTING

JAN 11 – MAR 11 INSTALLATION BY LEAH BROWN, CHRISTIAN FENECK AND PETER SYMONS

EBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND IS THE TIME the nation pauses to recognize the many contributions African Americans have made to the United States of America. Because of Black History Month, many Americans have come to learn that African Americans were instrumental in building this nation in every aspect of society despite being brought to America involuntarily as slaves. Accomplishments include many inventions, contributions to science, urbanization and many more. I take this opportunity to invite Miramarians to consider taking a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) to learn more about Black History and what it truly means. This Smithsonian Museum has the world’s largest collection of exhibits and artifacts that document the journey of African Americans in this country, how Blacks endured slavery, the Jim Crow Era, the Civil Rights Struggle all while contributing to society which has led to America as we know it today. To learn more about the NMAAHC, visit their website at www.nmaahc.si.edu In Miramar we also pause to recognize Black History Month. Shirley Branca Park will host a concert on February 3 from 6 – 9 with Regina Bell, Case, Deep Fried Funk and hosted by Tamara G. We invite all residents to join us for this event. Our police department has created an annual scholarship program called Hoops for Hope where basketball teams comprised of our City Youth compete for various prizes with the main goal of proceeds benefitting education. Youth from one of my initiative programs, My Brother’s Keeper, will participate as well. This takes place on Feb. 9th from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center, please stop by and support the effort. Coming up in March is my Annual 3K Run/Walk, Health and Yoga Fair. It is a wonderful opportunity to kick off a fitness program, continue if you’ve already started or just get out with the family and make new friends. Over 1200 residents and visitors will attend participating in cooking demonstrations, light exercise demonstrations and this year we will add a professional body building showcase. This event takes place on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17th, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. First Lady Angela and I wish you and your family a very special Valentine’s Day on February 14th. Please remember all your loved ones. I look forward to seeing you at any or all of the upcoming events in our great City. Enjoy! Yours in Service,

Living Hope Haiti (livinghopehaiti.com) Miami Palmetto Senior High PTSA BACKGROUND

You might call Linda Dwyer a professional at community service. The current patient coordinator of nonprofit Living Hope Haiti and PTSA President at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, Dwyer has, at times, acted as a big sister, court liaison, mountain guide and behavioral specialist… all before earning her Master’s Degree (it was in counseling psychology). Post-degree, the mom of three worked at long-term drug rehabilitation facility for female inmates and their children and became a “short term foster parent,” taking in children who were recently removed from their homes and hosting them for up to three weeks. After relocating to Florida for her husband’s job, Dwyer immediately jumped into the local public schools, taking on roles at Palmetto Elementary and Palmetto Middle before moving on to the high school.

28 28

BRIDGING THE GAP

Dwyer’s work with Living Hope Haiti was solidified further when she traveled to the country to see firsthand how the organization’s work is changing lives. “It is overwhelming to see how little people have in a country so close to us,” says Dwyer. “But to see people who are truly to helping those they have never met, and to see it changing lives for the better, is exciting.” One example? After seeing that communities were cut off from basic needs such as schools and markets during rainy season due to the high river, a team from LHH built a bridge using local resources and townspeople to do the work. “Now, during the rainy season, people can get safely from one side to the other to continue selling their goods at the market and allowing children to go to school,” she says. “Donated funds built a bridge that is saving lives.”

BACK TO SCHOOL

Another focus of Dwyer’s passion are local public schools, where she has worked to initiate and evolve programs from elementary to high school and to be inclusive of all children no matter their physical, mental or emotional limitations. “I’m proud when I see children happily enjoying things that I was a part of creating,” says Dwyer. “To see children proudly wearing spirit wear that we created, thoroughly enjoying an event, using supplies for which we fundraised, learning in classrooms that our advocacy fought to receive... all of these things and more make me proud.”

GETTING INVOLVED

Though it may not seem easy, Dwyer says the first step in helping others is actually very simple. “Jump in and help! Don’t wait to be asked,” she advises. “Contact whatever group that appeals to your heart and ask ‘What do you need?’ If you find a group that can be trusted, giving $5 a month can literally change lives. In America, with our excess of everything, it’s hard to remember that even in our community, children are in need.” Beyond money, Dwyer says giving anything from time to talent can not only make a difference in others’ lives but in your own as well. “It’s a win-win. Give of yourself and the joy you receive will far outweigh your sacrifices. Try it out. You’ll see that I’m right.”

Raising the next generation takes a village, and it is a joy to be here, in our Village. We are taking the job seriously.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

PET HEALTH

New Years Resolution: Get Pet Insurance?

Pest Control & Termite Professionals No Tent Termite Control

BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

M

ODERN ADVANCES IN VETERINARY MEDICAL technology and procedures such as dialysis, interventional cardiology, chemotherapy, CT scans and MRI studies, among others, have lead to an increase in the medical care cost for pets. The expectation that the cost of these sophisticated procedures and equipment should be less than in human medicine because “they’re just animals” is unrealistic. With the increase in the sophistication of veterinary medicine also comes an increase in the success of treatments and in the life expectancy of our pets. On the other hand, the cost of preventive care such as annual exams, vaccines and intestinal parasite evaluation is an affordable and fixed cost that can be planned for ahead of time. What can be difficult to afford are the unexpected medical conditions that pets develop over their lifetimes, such as bone fractures, chronic renal disease, pancreatitis, cancer, and many others. This is when pet health insurance should be considered; for unexpected catastrophic medical conditions only. Pet health insurance is not designed to save money for routine preventive care as many pet owners might think, since in that case you may find yourself investing in premiums that are higher than the financial return you are getting from the insurance. Pet health insurance plans are great. They have many advantages when compared to health insurance for humans. Pet owners can choose any veterinary clinician or board certified specialist anywhere in the country. They are not limited to a provider network. In addition, the insurance company does not dictate the medical treatments a clinician should follow for each specific patient. Claims are paid much quicker as well. When ready to choose a pet insurance you should do some homework though. Do not make the mistake of just choosing the insurance based on the amount of monthly premium to be paid. The cost of these premiums depend partially on factors you cannot control (breed/age of the pet and the geographical area where you live), and on some factors that you can control such as the amount of coverage you want, and the deductible you are interested in. Choose a pet insurance plan taking into consideration your pet’s potential medical needs in the future: for example the cost of an emergency gastrostomy if your dog or cat is known to swallow foreign bodies frequently, or the cost for orthopedic surgery to repair a fractured bone if your pet tends to escape under the fence and is hit by a car. Always request the list of conditions not covered by the insurance plan that you are looking into. Finally, do not confuse a “wellness plan” offered by a veterinary facility with an insurance plan. These wellness plans are for routine preventive care, and they obligate you to get all the medical services within that particular facility or corporate hospital. Another disadvantage of the wellness plans is that they offer a preventive care schedule that is standard for every animal, without taking into consideration the specific needs required by each individual pet. If you are able to pay out of pocket for the management of your pet’s unexpected medical conditions, then a pet insurance plan is not for you. However, if you are like most pet owners, and require financial assistance to afford 21st century medical care for your pet, then an insurance plan adequate for your pet needs is a must. If the commitment to pay a monthly pet health plan premium is difficult for you, then consider other options. Now you can finance the cost of treatment for a specific health condition through veterinary-specific financing programs, or may be a basic savings plan for your pet’s unexpected medical conditions might be what is best for you. Left behind are the days when a beloved pet had to be euthanized due to an inability to afford treatment for a medical condition that can be successfully managed. As soon as you welcome a new pet to your life, consider acquiring a pet insurance plan, while your pet is healthy and there are no pre existing medical conditions; you will be glad you did. Estefano’s Story When it came time to blow out his candles on his 14th birthday, Estefano had only one wish: a new heart. Just 40 minutes later, the Pediatric Heart Transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital surprised his family with a phone call that made his wish come true. Born with a single ventricle heart defect, Estefano underwent five open heart surgeries since the age of 2. The surgeries allowed his heart to function better and sustain him, but his heart began to fail and the team assessed the need to put him on the transplant list. The Weston teen is the hospital’s 30th heart transplant recipient and living legacy of a donor family who gave him the gift of a new life.
