What is
Adventure?
by Kyla Galbreath
When we hear the word adventure, we usually think of the grandiose – like going skydiving or making spontaneous trips to places we have never been before. While these things may follow the dictionary definition of the word, I think the belief that onlyy the the grandiose grandiose can can be be an an adventure adventure is is just just not not true. true.
Adventure :an unusual and exciting or daring experience
For most of us on Misawa Air Base, moving to Japan – a place where we have not previously known the culture, the language or the people – has been an adventure all on its own. Having to do it with pets and kids, even more so. In Covid times, we’ve had to deal with being stuck at home while the slopes await our skiis and the beautiful sights await oour ur eeyes. yes.
During moments like these, I have been glad when I remember that I can go on an adventure without leaving my home. Thanks to resources online and our own Overstreet Memorial Library, books and audiobooks alike are available to us for free. I can walk through the snow in Narnia, row in the 1936 Olympics or appreciate the art of Japan. Even at home I can experience our world or a fictional one. TThis his is is nnot ot ttoo ssay ay tthat hat yyou ou will nnot ot ssee me hopping on the next ITT or ODR trip. In fact, because of reading, I can go back out to the world with more enthusiasm to explore and learn on these trips. Because of reading, I can adventure wherever I go. 18 |

he D he Department ep partm of Defense SkillBridge program (formerly known as the Career Skills Program) provides retiring and separating service members the opportunity to Skil Sk kili llss P rroogr ogr participate part pa rtticcip pat a e in civilian job training programs while they transition out of the military.
SkillBridge connects service members with real-world job experiences through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internship opportunities. This can help service members bridge the gap between the end of service and the beginning of their civilian careers.
DoD SkillBridge Thursday, March 17 1 p.m. Building 653, Room 219
There are many industry partners in fields such as energy, information technology, manufacturing, transportation, and more. Partners include employers such as Amazon, Lockheed Martin, United Health Group, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. A complete list of authorized providers is available at https://skillbridge.osd.mil/organizations.htm. In their final 180 days of Active Duty, transitioning service members can be granted permissive duty to focus on full-time training with a DoD-approved partner, after their unit commander provides written authorization and approval. During SkillBridge participation, you will continue to receive military pay and benefits. Release for SkillBridge is always mission-dependent. Want to learn more about SkillBridge? The Misawa Education Office will hold an informational briefing on Thursday, March 17 at 1 p.m. in Building 653, Room 219. Please call us at DSN 226-4201 or email MisawaEducationOffice@us.af.mil to sign up. Leisure TIMES | 25

What is Military Spouse Preference?
The spouse of an active duty member of the Military Services, who relocates via a permanent change of station (PCS) move as a sponsored dependent, to the military sponsor’s new permanent duty station is entitled to military spouse preference (MSP) for all positions in the commuting area of the new duty station being filled under competitive procedures. Make sure to upload your PCS orders when you apply for a position.
When do you lose your Military Spouse Preference?
You lose MSP when you accept or decline a Regular category position with NAF (Non-appropriated funds), Appropriated funds (GS positions), AAFES (BX). You also lose your MSP if you decline an invitation to the interview for regular category positions. However you DO NOT LOSE the Military Spouse Preference if you accept or decline FLEX positions.
How many times can you use the Military Spouse Preference?
You can apply with Military Spouse Preference without limit. Military Spouses will be referred using Military Spouse Preference until such time as they accept or decline a Regular category position, or fail to maintain eligibility, or are no longer interested in being referred.
Who qualifies for Family Member Preference?
Family members are the spouse, or unmarried dependent children, including stepchildren, adopted children, and foster children not more than 23 years of age, residing with a member of the U.S. Armed Forces or a U.S. citizen civilian employee of a U.S. Government Agency (APF employee, AAFES employees). If you have any questions, contact the NAF HRO off ice. NAF HRO is located at Torii Building 656, room 1460. You can also contact us at 0176-77-3108 or 35fss.hro@us.af.mil
