LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

T

he March equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator line, heading north in the sky. This occurred on March 20 at 4:37 a.m. and represented the first official day of spring. After this date, the northern hemisphere is tilted more toward the sun, resulting in increased daylight and warmer temperatures. Needless to say, we blissfully welcomed the March equinox, perhaps more this year than any year in recent memory, as we anticipate an emergence from our COVID-19 hibernation. The Cardinals home opener is set for April 8 - an unofficial St. Louis holiday we did not get the chance to experience last year. The Club staff is preparing for a full spring of events at the Club, many of which we missed last year. All summer camps are open for registration. While the dates of certain signature events changed this year, we look forward to them nonetheless. Families can enjoy Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 4 at both Clubhouses. Members will return to Augusta via the Missouri Room for the Masters Golf Tournament Brunch the following Sunday, April 11. Join fellow Members and guests for a watch party, food and silent auction benefitting the Charitable Society for Children. Members will have the opportunity for camaraderie at both the West and Downtown Clubhouses as we celebrate Good Fellowship day on April 24. I encourage all Members to attend this renowned annual tradition. The Associates, Women's Initiative Group and Mark Twain Society will host a Kentucky Derby Party on May 1 at the 1903 Bar and Patio. We will award the iconic Hermann Trophy at a dinner on May 27. This nationally recognized event is a must for sports fans. The gloves come out on June 10 for Boxing Night, a perennial member favorite. Local boxers will square off in the Missouri Room surrounded by Members and guests in what always proves to be a memorable evening. We have safe and secure Clubhouses ready to welcome our Members, their families and guests. On May 6, you will elect a new class of Governors. We welcome a robust group of candidates vying to serve on the Board with our first female President, Angie Minges. We plan to hold all election-related activities this year, including the legendary gauntlet, to the extent permitted by applicable guidelines. If you have not experienced election night Downtown, I encourage you to do so. It represents one of the most time-honored traditions at the Missouri Athletic Club. Even if you vote electronically, election night offers a unique opportunity to revel in tradition and share a meal – including the famous fried shrimp – in the Missouri Room as we announce the Board Class of 2021-2022 who will take office on May 20. We applaud the candidates offering their time and talents to further the mission of the MAC.

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

The current Board worked hard this year to set the table for success post-COVID and is confident the new Board will take the Club to even greater heights. The state of our Club is strong. Member engagement is increasing, Clubs within the Club are active, the golf program at Glen Echo is growing, and our Members clamor for more social events and opportunities for dining and fitness. We currently project a fiscal yearend financial result well ahead of our budget thanks in large part to an Employee Retention Credit program offered as part of the Cares Act to employers who retained employees during the pandemic. The Board and administration are considering capital projects that our Members have requested. We hope to commence work on some of these projects in the near term as well as the previously approved climbing wall at the West Clubhouse. In this edition of the Cherry Diamond, Governor Cheri McLaughlin, chair of the Planning Committee, reviews recent enhancements to our planning process and the value of the process to our Membership. I want to thank Cheri and the entire Planning Committee for their hard work this year. Despite the diversion of the pandemic, they stayed the course and completed this important work for the Club. Positive membership trends continue. Our membership stands at 2,176 and rising. Our Platinum Program has rewarded nearly 50 members approaching $30,000 in incentive credits for referring new members. That program continues until Aug. 1. We recently recognized our first-ever 75-year Member, Don Sher, who celebrated the 75th anniversary of his joining the MAC on March 26. Don exemplifies a lifetime at the MAC. The Board of Governors designated March 26 as Don Sher Day at the MAC to recognize this amazing accomplishment. Read more about Don and his lifetime of MAC experiences in this month’s Cherry Diamond. This year, we can all hopefully enjoy spring with less disruption and uncertainty than we experienced in 2020. Instead of closed Clubhouses, we foresee golf at Glen Echo or one of our reciprocal courses, dining on the 1903 patio, rooftop events or one of the many Club or CWC events on the calendar. I wish you all a healthy spring and look forward to seeing you at one of the events we have longed to attend at our Club for the past year. We welcome our new Members and thank our enduring Members for your loyalty. F

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER t’s hard to believe it’s been a full year since we had to close our Clubhouses for two weeks and furlough a large percentage of our employees. Things are looking up, though, as we move into the warmer months and more and more of our region’s residents get vaccinated! We anticipate a busy spring and summer season full of events and Member gatherings at both Clubhouses. I want to give a shoutout to President Dan Lett, who at the beginning of his term last May, made it one of his first priorities to take a look at our employee and Member bases and evaluate them with a focus on diversity and inclusion. With the unrest taking place in the country, equality and inclusion became a focus for our leadership team. We’ve completed four separate training groups and have had several meetings with various demographics of employees and Members just to get our finger on the pulse. The good news is that we really do have a diverse base of employees, and after several interviews, our employees seemed positive about the way everyone treats each other here. Now, we’re looking at the whole membership base. We have a civic engagement task force, a downtown security task force and a membership engagement task force to examine these topics all under different types of lenses. We want to know what our community looks like and how we can really engage and have a bigger voice. I’m currently serving on a task group with the National Club Association, our watchdog group that’s been the advocate for the private club industry in Washington, D.C., for 60 years. What I’ve learned is that the issues surrounding diversity and inclusion aren’t unique to the MAC. The National Club Association has taken this topic on at a national level and are undertaking a study to see where clubs stand. Serving on this task group, it’s interesting to hear the issues clubs have, whether they’re in the deep south or a city club in Los Angeles. There’s no one-sizefits-all solution, but it’s good to have a focus on these topics and hear more from the movers and shakers within our club communities. At the MAC, we have 2,200-plus of some of the most successful people in

I

St. Louis as our Members, and together we have a big voice that we want to use in a way that’s louder, more purposeful and more on-target with the issues facing St. Louis and the region. Big thanks to President Lett for kicking this all off, as it seems we’re in pretty good shape moving forward. We have an employee base that respects each other, works together and really considers each other family. One of the other comments that came out of these listening sessions is that employees feel like they have an open line of communication with senior staff and management. That’s always good to hear, because the key cornerstones of our operations is “open and honest communication flowing in all directions with the richest means and understandings shared by all.” I’ve said that line a thousand times, and we work daily to walk the talk. As you can see, there’s a lot going on at the Club, and we try to keep you posted on everything, communicating the best we can through our various sources. Hopefully you’re reading this at the beginning of the month either in print or online. Recently, we’ve had some serious issues with the United States Postal Service getting this publication mailed out in a timely manner. While we don’t have control over when the hard copy arrives at your mailbox, we always post the completed edition electronically for our Members to access well before the beginning of the month. Please keep an eye on social media and your emails to see the electronic version as soon as it’s published. If you still prefer to read your magazine in a printed format, please stop by the front desk at either Clubhouse to pick up a copy, which we always have in hand at the time of mailing. It’s always a challenge, but we always strive to keep you as informed as possible! Come on out and have some MAC fun! See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Secure Your PA RT N E R S H I P STAT U S The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago, and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One sideeffect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F Effective Oct. 1, all Members in the

Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or À la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership. F Bring your potential Platinum Partner to the Monthly Membership Mixer to give them a taste of the Club. F

Do You Have the Card? Receive $500 Club Credit for Each Referral Just because you already have a Platinum Partnership does not mean you should stop referring new Members to the Club. Starting Nov. 1, for each new Member referred to the Club, the referring Member will receive a Platinum Bonus of $500 Club credit. F With each new Member referred to the Club, the referring Member will receive a $500 Club credit on their statement. F There is no limit on the number of incentives a sponsoring Member can earn and more than one new Member can be referred for a credit in any given month. F A referral, as a referral credit, will not be awarded after the prospective Member has been approved by the Board of Governors. F The referring Member must act as a Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F A referral credit will not be granted if the Membership Department introduces the new Member to the active Member. F The Monthly Membership Mixer is the perfect place to introduce potential Members to the Club. F This program will end on Aug. 1, 2021. GOODBYE DEBBIE One of the MAC's Favorite Employees Retires after 40 Years of Service CD: Tell me a little about your background and how you came to the MAC. DM: My sister Toni started here in 1980, and she was here a year before I started. So that’s how I came to know about the Club. They needed somebody so she let me know. CD: How has your position changed over time? DM: Well, I started as a waitress for about a week, but then I came down to the front desk and worked midnights. Then I moved to afternoons. CD: How did you decide to move to the front desk from waitressing? DM: Back in the day, waitressing was tableside. I wasn’t quite used to that so I was glad to step down to the front desk. CD: In your eyes, how has the Club changed over the years? DM: The Club has changed a lot. When I started in ’81, it was men-only. We used to have 21 people who lived here. And it was getting to know everybody. This Club was always family-oriented to me, but it definitely has changed. Now we have a woman president, which I never thought that would happen. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. I’ve seen a lot of kids grow up and get married. Now they have families. So it’s been pretty good. CD: What has been the most rewarding part of your job here? DM: Probably meeting as many Members as I have and becoming friends with them personally. I guess I said, knowing their families. There’s Mr. Tampow, the Gaertners, the Bommaritos and so many more — all are people I grew up with and grew close to. CD: So what was it like working with your sister, even tangentially? DM: I never really worked with her. She worked days, and when I came in at 3 p.m., I relieved her. CD: Did that make you grow apart then? Since you worked opposite shifts? DM: Well we live by each other, so no. We’ve always hung out together and always worked together. In the beginning, family couldn’t work together so I worked midnights, and she worked days. So that’s how it came about that we never got to work together. CD: Because you worked at the same institution,

would you say that has shaped your relationship? DM: No, we just got to talk about things and common experiences since we worked at the same place. CD: Looking forward, what are you excited to do in your retirement? DM: I’m most excited about starting a new chapter. It’s not that I won’t work, I’m sure I’ll work part-time somewhere eventually, but I’m looking forward to spending time with my sisters and brothers and being able to travel. CD: So what are some of your dream destinations? DM: My nephew lives in Arizona, so I’d like to see him especially because he has a new son. And Florida, I love spending time in Florida. CD: What’s been your favorite MAC experience? DM: There’s been a lot of them, but I have to say when they had Employee of the Quarter, and they said everyone from the front desk had to come. I didn’t know it was going to be me. Mr. [Wally] Smith and Joe [Dietz] complimented me very nicely. It was very surprising. It was really something. CD: So do you have any memories at the MAC that you know you’ll never forget? DM: The thing I remember was when I first started, I got stuck here for three days because there was this big snowstorm. So I got to be a waitress and work the front desk. That was kind of exciting for the first time being here. Overall, the Club has been great though. There hasn’t been one particular thing that stuck out. There’s been a lot of new experiences and getting to meet lots of new people. There’s been a lot of employees coming in and out as well as management. CD: Do you have any parting words to say to the MAC? DM: The Members I will miss most of all! They always made me feel so good about myself, always speak to me and say I can’t retire yet. CD: So what do you say to those Members who say you can’t retire yet? DM: I love you all and will miss you all. Debbie Masters' final day at the Club will be Friday, April 9. Stop by the Front Desk to wish her farewell. F

GROW YOUR BUSINESS WITH THE MAC Ashley Hancock Returns to the Club to Help Members Meet their Advertising Needs In the new year, the MAC's former Director of Membership returned to the Club to help Members grow their businesses. Through her new role as the Director of Sponsorship, her job is to learn about Members' marketing goals and objectives and help customize advertising and sponsorship opportunities to meet their needs. The MAC has a variety of effective traditional and non-traditional avenues to deliver messages to a desirable target audience. For those Members looking to make business connections, she wants to help them utilize their Membership to the fullest by reaching out, gaining attention, and staying top of mind. My role supports one pillar of the Club's mission to be a premier place for business professionals. "I have spent my career working to help clients connect with their target market in effective and authentic ways. I've found that the Club supports just that; building connections and developing relationships, which embraces a long-standing culture of Members supporting Members, the MAC

Family. So why not reach out and tell your family about you and your business!" Even though she has only been in this role for about four months, she has hit the ground running with several new advertising partnerships, including one with Mungenast St. Louis Acura. From her earliest days at the MAC, she began brainstorming ideas for an MAC automotive partnership, feeling that there are a variety of unique ways many businesses, including automotive, can connect and engage with Members. "I was fortunate that Kurt Mungenast reached out to learn more about marketing at the MAC and our visions for a partnership were perfectly aligned. I am so excited for members to see the neat things this Partnership has in store for them throughout the year. Stay tuned for Member benefits and unique opportunities!" Contact Hancock by phone (314-3682393) or email (ahancock@mac-stl.org) to learn more about how you can grow your business through the MAC in 2021. F

SECOND QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT ebruary marked the end of the first six months of the Club’s fiscal year. The first half of fiscal year 2021 was very different than the first half of fiscal year 2020 when the Club experienced record financial performance. Our Member headcount in February was 2,141 compared to 2,403 in February 2020. This lower headcount coupled with Member concessions that have been in place during the first half of the year resulted in dues revenue that was $610,000 less favorable than the first half of last year. Operating revenue totaled $3.2 million through February compared to $6.4 million during the first half of last year. This was largely due to capacity restrictions at both Clubhouses and the closure of indoor dining at West during the holiday season, one of the busiest times of the year. The departments most heavily impacted were Overnight Rooms, Downtown Food & Beverage and West Food & Beverage. As a result of these lower revenues, operating departments collectively posted a year-to-date loss of $900,000 compared to last year’s profit of over $275,000. On a positive note, our unallocated costs were nearly $700,000 less during the first half of this year compared to last year. Much of the savings were in staffing and benefit costs, with a significant amount of savings in utility expenses at both Clubhouses. As mentioned last month, the MAC qualifies for round two of the Employee Retention Credit (ERC). Through the end of February, we’ve recognized $900,000 in ERC credits. We are now projecting that the Club qualifies for the credits through the second quarter of calendar year 2021. As a result, the Club has experienced positive operating cash flow of $950,000 year to date. This is $877,000 better

F

than the budget, although it is $280,000 less than last year. Looking ahead 120 days through June, we anticipate soft revenue in Dues and Overnight Rooms, while expenses should continue to trend somewhat under budget. We will also have the benefit of the ERC through June which will give a boost to cash flow. The Club’s Finance Committee, Board of Governors and senior management have been diligently monitoring our financial performance and looking ahead 120 days to gauge the need to implement strategies to ensure our financial stability. Rest assured, we have already implemented several of these strategies and have others in the wings if needed. At the same time, your leadership is dedicated to providing you and your guests with a premier experience at an exceptional value. Be on the lookout for enhanced member benefits such as in-house physical therapy services provided by SSM Health, the completion of the Youth Activity Room including climbing walls, and a new website and mobile app. Your Club is open and ready to serve you! And don’t forget to introduce your friends and colleagues to the Club to receive $500 in Club credits for each referral! If you have any questions concerning the Club’s finances, please contact the Club’s Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth, at 314-539-4400 or proth@mac-stl.org. F

This system will also make entering and exiting the garage easier for Members and their guests. The Downtown Clubhouse sits on one of the safest blocks in St. Louis City, and the MAC administration and Downtown Security Task Force are regularly in discussions about new

initiatives that could be implemented. Security supervisor Fred Nelson says that Members are always welcome to ask a security desk employee for an escort to their vehicle if they feel uncomfortable for any reason. Additionally, the new camera system in the front of the Clubhouse and all around the building has been installed and should be up and running by the Cardinals’ home opener on April 8. “We’re constantly looking for ways to improve security in the downtown area on a daily basis,” Nelson says. baking A difference With Icing Smiles The MAC Food and Beverage Department is proud to be partnering with Icing Smiles, Inc. The nonprofit organization provides custom cakes and other desserts to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. They are able to do this by partnering with local bakers, such as the MAC's team, to bake these personalized treats. According to their website, "Memories have magical powers. Long after the cake is gone, the memories linger – memories of the kindness of a stranger, of the art of the design, of the sweet smells of a special treat, of the smiles and laughs, of a normal childhood experience so often stolen from these children. These memories are why we say, 'It is so much more than a cake.'” F

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER | Leaving a Legacy

Do You Have A Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, well over 50% of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan!

PRESERVATION FOUNDATION BOARD Dean Eggerding, President Bob Frederic Troy Robertson Mark Belew Keith Phoenix Al Meitl Chris Hyams Tripp Zumwalt

And many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. If you need assistance in writing a will or updating an existing one, please contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Philanthropy, or Larry Absheer, Director of Advancement. Even if you do not have a will or if your existing will is out of date, one easy and very inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs, charities and your favorite Club receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. They are easy to make and easy to change. To leave a lasting legacy here at your club, please consider designating the MAC or our MAC Preservation Foundation as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or on a life insurance policy.

What Are the Next Steps? 1. Contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Philanthropy, or Larry Absheer, Director of Advancement, to learn more about wills, trusts, and other estate planning topics. 2. Allow Cynthia or Larry to help show you how easy it is to set up a beneficiary designation. 3. If you need help with estate planning, Cynthia or Larry can put you in touch with a member of the Club’s Planned Giving Advisory Council, which is comprised of qualified MAC Members who can provide expert advice and assistance.

MAC Online: NEW & IMPROVED

O

n May 5, the Missouri Athletic Club will launch its new website, powered by Jonas Club Software. The Club decided to make this switch because we already use Jonas

for the back-end billing system, and operating under one collective provider instead of two (Clubessential and Jonas) will make for a more seamless website experience in all areas.

16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Jonas also offers improved systems for event registration, court booking, dining reservations and more. Many areas of the website will look familiar to Members, as we opted to keep the appearance and navigation largely the same to prevent confusion. The website will still allow Members to pay their statements, book a court, view the roster, check the menus and much more. One main component that will affect many Members right at the website’s launch is the ACH billing system. For their own security, Members who are enrolled in autopayments will need to re-enter their banking information on the website upon its launch to ensure the electronic payments continue to process, and those who were used to viewing their statements online will need to update their profiles to be able to access them. It’s imperative that Members transition their information to the new website

because it will not carry over. Once the website is live on May 5, Members can navigate to the Statements page and click on the button that says “Pay Now.” By clicking this link, a new tab or window will open up, taking them to the Elavon portal. From there, Members will be able to pay their bill. They will be required to enter their payment information, as this information will not be on file initially with Elavon. This information can be stored for future payments if they like, but it is not required. As with all website launches, we will be working diligently to ensure there are no glitches or faulty areas of the site, but if you should encounter something that’s not functioning properly, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at webmaster@mac-stl.org. We’re striving to create the best online experience for our Members, and we appreciate your patience as we make this transition! F

T h e BR eakfast Clu b Former MAC Swimmers Remain Close With Weekly Ritual

Although 2020 has already become synonymous with the separation and feelings of isolation that took place during the pandemic, a group of swimmers found a way to combat that at the MAC. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, this group of girls, including Audrey and Amelia Dino, Margaret Beimdiek, Anna Moehn, Sophie Thompson, Maddie Palatt and Madelyn Schoedel, gets up at 5:15 a.m. for swim practice. However, due to the pandemic, the team wasn't able to get ready for school at Westminster, where they practice with their CSP club team. According to Schoedel, the Dino sisters were the first to suggest going to the West Clubhouse to get ready for school and eat breakfast at the MAC, which began their tradition starting in September.

20 F CHERRY DIAMOND

"We have become closer during our breakfasts. When we shower/change we will talk about school, swimming and social lives which helps us to get to know each other better," said Schoedel. Many of these girls have been swimming together for a while. While they were younger, the Dino sisters, Palatt and Schoedel had spent time on the MAC swim team, which could be the reason they chose the Club for this afterpractice event. Schoedel, personally, began swimming with the MAC at age 7. "I learned how to swim at the MAC, and Coach Lauren taught me all my strokes. I had a great time swimming at the MAC, which is why I chose to swim club later."

Through their hours of practice, this group of girls has achieved quite a lot in their young careers. Schoedel: Sophomore, Villa Duchesne - 3rd place 50 free and 3rd place 100 free Palatt: Senior, Cor Jesu - 1st place 200 IM and 2nd place 100 back Moehn: Junior, Cor Jesu - 1st place 200 free and 1st place 500 free Amelia Dino: Sophomore, Visitation - 11th place 500 free Audrey Dino: Senior, Visitation - 23rd place 200 free and 15th place 100 back Thompson: Senior, Clayton - 14th place 200 free and 10th place 500 free Biemdiek: Junior, Visitation, did not swim on her high school team Their CSP club team also placed first in sectionals in March. MAC Partners with or the first time, the MAC will offer in-house physical therapy services. SSM Health was announced as the physical therapy provider for the MAC early last year. The clinic, located at the West Clubhouse, offers a one-of-a-kind environment, exclusive to MAC Members and their families, to provide preventative and rehabilitative services that maximize function and promote well-being.

F

What to Expect Billy Ferris, PT, DPT, will be the physical therapist for the clinic. The clinic will focus on caring for each patient and reaching his/her goals. During the initial appointment, Ferris will ask about each Member's injury, home environment, activity level, interests and goals. He will then provide a roadmap for treatment and, most importantly, help Members get back to daily life. Ferris will also check your strength and flexibility. During that first appointment, the goal is to provide information about: F The injury F The treatment plan and how it will help F The number of appointments to expect for treatment Through therapy, he hopes to work together to help Members improve their quality of life and get back to the activities they enjoy.

Scheduling Information Please call 314-822-3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. The fax number is 314-822-3056. At the time of scheduling, Members will receive an email of the paperwork to complete prior to your appointment. Often, treatment will begin during the first appointment, which will be 45-60 minutes.

Scheduling Information Our staff will review Members' plan benefits received from their insurance company. Additionally, they bill the insurance company on Members' behalf and work to collect the amount owed. This would include the deductible, coinsurance, co-pay or any service not covered by the insurance plan. Contact the insurance company before the first appointment to confirm therapy services. Physical therapy services will be available at the West Clubhouse in May. Keep an eye on MAC social media and website for an official date. F

AMANDA Williams Visits the Military history club On Tuesday, April 27, the Military History Club welcomes Amanda Williams, Education Director of the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia who will talk with us about the Triumphs and Controversies of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. In his 52-year military career, MacArthur could often be found at the center of triumph or controversy. Pershing thought MacArthur was his greatest battlefield commander, but that he had a big ego. Roosevelt valued his military mind but also called him the most dangerous man in America. Eisenhower considered him the only true genius he ever met, but also found him too

MAC AROUND THE CLUB

MAC LEGEND: Donald Sher n March 26, 2021, the MAC celebrated Don Sher Day, marking the 75th anniversary of the longtime Member’s join date in 1946. Looking back at records, MAC administrators are fairly certain there haven’t been any other Members who’ve belonged to the Club for that long. Sher joined the MAC because his father had been a Member since “the war years… around 1917,” Sher guesses. He grew up in University City and remembers riding the bus downtown after school let out. When he and his brother arrived at the MAC, they would play basketball in the gym for an hour and then take swim classes. “We swam in the nude, and when we played basketball, we played shirts versus skins,” he remembers. “We had a locker and we’d get a towel and take the bus home afterwards.” Sher’s father, Louis, had bad arthritis and was crippled when he was in his 30s, so athletics weren’t the main focus of his MAC experience. Louis was a lawyer, and as a fledgling Member, Sher got to know many of his father’s lawyer friends at the Club. Sher eventually went on to become a lawyer himself, graduating from Washington University in St. Louis with a law degree in 1949. He says the social aspect of the Club has been his favorite thing about the MAC as an adult, but he credits the staff when he was younger on their efforts in teaching him how to swim and “just putting up with me.” “Those coaches had to put up with me, and they had a lot of patience,” he says with a laugh. Sher calls himself a “pretty bad athlete… probably one of the last guys they’d pick on the team” and found the MAC’s declaration of Don Sher Day amusing. “I’m honored more than I can say that the MAC would consider to write anything about me,” he says. Sher has fond memories of socializing

with fellow lawyers at the MAC while he was practicing and used to dine at the Jack Buck Grille regularly before going to the symphony. “You couldn’t beat the steak, my gosh,” he said. “And the oysters in half shell, and the tomato soup. The food in general has just always been very good.” He recalls taking his family to “superb” Thanksgiving meals at the Downtown Clubhouse and bringing out-of-town friends to dine, as well. “If you wanted to take somebody who had come from out of town somewhere special, you took them to the MAC.” He recalls a time when there was a bad power outage in Clayton. Sher, his wife, his sister and a friend of his called the MAC to see if they could come stay at the hotel for a few days. “We came down and spent three or four days until the power got renewed,” he says. “Those are good memories.” When asked why he has stayed a Member for all these years, Sher answered simply that his family has always enjoyed their time at the MAC. “It has been a family gathering place for us many times. There’s a great sense of community, too,” he says. Sher is also complimentary of the way the Club operated and adapted to change in all the years he’s been a Member. “[The MAC] was very quick in adjusting to the change in race relations, which I welcomed and was glad to see happen. They were also quick to adjust to [the addition of female Members] and made those adjustments. Their boards have been generally wonderful and wellhandled. It’s run so professionally,” he says. Sher is now 94 years old, and the MAC has been a constant in his life for decades. “That’s one good thing about living a long life because [the MAC] has always a pleasant place for us to go,” he says. “We all love the Club.” F

MAC Strategic Plan The MAC's 2020-2029 Strategic Plan Is Now Available

An investment of time. A processled commitment. A collaborative body of work that captures who we are, what we’re doing, and how we plan to get there. All of these could describe the Missouri Athletic Club Strategic Plan. It has been my privilege and pleasure to serve as chairperson of the Club’s Planning Committee this year. The committee’s structure, as we know it now, was created in June 2015 after the Board of Governors approved a reorganization of the Club’s committee structure. The committee is primarily known for being the keeper of the Club’s 10-year Strategic Plan which follows an annual process to refresh and update both internal department goals and objectives. The plan includes the 10-year financial plan and the 10-year capital plan, which tracks and accounts for all capital expenditures for near term and future capital projects. The goal of our committee is to provide process, continuity, decision support, forward-thinking, leadership, and strategic oversight to support Club leadership and the Board of Governors. During the 2020-2021 planning cycle which began in the spring of 2020, for the first time, we created teams of our Planning Committee members to partner with Club leaders and staff to prepare the materials for the 2020 plan. The Club’s fiscal year begins on Sept. 1 each year, so the financial and capital plan sections are prepared on a fiscal year basis. Most of our Members will find the capital plan section interesting because this is where we capture and assign placeholders for both “have to do” as well as “want to do” items. The items listed in the current year have been approved by the Board of Governors and are a “go.” The nine following “out years” have items listed as placeholders. During the annual budget cycle, and as budget becomes available and circumstances move forward, those items can be moved back, pulled forward or combined with other items as the annual budget is prepared, revised and presented to the Board each year.

In 2020, we created two new sections of the plan to reflect the growing importance of these areas of the Club: information technology and club life/CWCs. Member engagement is a priority of the Board and leadership team, and both of these areas have been identified as having an impact on the quality of the experience our Members have while in our Club. Information technology is a significant, growing area that encompasses everything from traditional I.T. issues such as server and P.C. management, to cybersecurity preparation and penetration testing, security camera deployment and integration with our security provider Hackett Security, as well as the new software and equipment deployed to provide our state-of-the-art spinning studio at West. Club engagement, another key focus of the Board, is reinforced by our commitment to being the “Club For Life” and the multi-generational, multi-faceted opportunities our Members have to share common interests and experiences through our Clubs Within the Club (CWC) and Club events. Finally, we have added a new planning tool to the annual plan - the strategic framework. This tool captures on one page the mission, vision, and values of the Club, as well as the Board’s high-level, primary focus areas (pillars), desired initiatives (priorities), and tactical programs (actions). The plan was written this year to tie the individual efforts of each of our internal business lines with the framework, and to align the projects, activities and capital expenditures we discuss and approve with the high-level strategic objectives we capture in this key planning document. Like the traditional content of the 10-year plan, this document is evaluated on an annual basis, updated as needed, and ratified by both the Committee and Board each June. I want to thank the members of the Board of Governors, Wally and his team, and the individual members of the Planning Committee for their outstanding work on this plan and the planning process. As a Member, I encourage you to take the time to look through it. It will provide a window into what the Club is planning, how we plan on doing it, and the value it provides our Membership. F
