LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Iam humbled to have the opportunity to serve as the Missouri Athletic Club’s 106th President and excited to kick off what should be a great year.

The Missouri Athletic Club has been an institution in the St. Louis community for over 100 years with camaraderie, fellowship, family, and tradition defining the spirit of the Club. The dedication of our staff and the generosity of our Members helped us endure the challenges of the global pandemic. Now we embark upon a time of celebration as life returns to normal and we have the ability to utilize our Club to the fullest. The energy at the Club is invigorating, and there has never been a better time to be a Member. Over the next year, I welcome the opportunity to get to know as many of you as possible and work alongside my fellow Governors, committee members, and our dedicated staff as we work to grow and strengthen our Club.

Thank you to the outgoing senior class whose selfless service helped us navigate strict regulations, financial challenges, and the uncertainty borne from contending with COVID-19. Thank you, Dan (President Lett) for your leadership, your friendship, and your amazing sense of humor. Everyone will remember your legacy: keeping the Club’s spirit alive with two closed Clubhouses. Thank you, Nat (Governor Walsh), Jeff (Governor Moore), and Gene (Governor Frederick). Thank you for your energy and your willingness to lend your time and talents to support our Club. Your final year was marked by unprecedented challenges. The extra efforts you put forth to enhance the CSCs, Club Life and develop our Civic Engagement Task Force have helped create the excitement we currently see in the Club today. Without your leadership, we might not be here today! To Cheri (Governor McLaughlin), thank you and welcome back. Giving us another three years is above and beyond.

To the newest Governors… welcome! Carter, Neal, Mark and Mark, I look forward to working with each one of you. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and I am confident you all will make a big impact on the Club. We just had a tremendous election with 10 Members stepping up to serve the Club. I am thrilled that all 10 candidates will be serving in some leadership capacity over the next year, a true testament to the collective group’s dedication.

The Missouri Athletic Club history is unique. It’s completely different than any other club within our region. Over the next year, we will focus on Member Engagement, Member Recruitment, Facility Enhancements, and Staff Support utilizing the Strategic Framework developed over the last year to guide our initiatives moving forward which are needed to build upon our Club’s position of strength. Our dedication to providing premier service is our core guiding principle.

Member Engagement initiatives will focus on enhancing the Member experience as we look to provide additional amenities, enhance our reciprocal program,

and explore possible new Club Life programs and strategic partnerships. Key to growing our Club is an engaged Member base advocating for our Club’s unique points of differentiation.

Member Recruitment initiatives will focus on diversifying our membership while embracing our strong Civic Leadership roots. In May, we officially kicked off our brand strategy work with Bigwidesky, a small St. Louis consultancy. The work will help us achieve our ambitions through the creation of a formal marketing plan highlighting our premier image and providing a common voice that can be communicated to our membership and beyond.

Facilities Enhancements includes continued investment behind capital projects while defining a future vision for each Clubhouse including exploring the benefits of a facilities master plan. Our resources are limited, but our commitment to supporting our Members’ demands is unwavering.

Staff Support initiatives will focus on investing in our staff, enhancing employee engagement as well as retention, and defining a strong succession plan. Our staff differentiates us from all other Clubs within the region, and we are dedicated to ensuring their success.

We will provide updates on key initiatives. I owe you all transparent, proactive communication about our successes as well as our challenges. Our membership base is strong and growing. In May, we approved 49 new Memberships. There is a buzz of excitement when you walk into the Clubhouses. But we are not without our challenges. Currently, we are contending with challenges filling some staff vacancies. If you know someone looking to join an organization that values and supports their staff, please recommend them to the Missouri Athletic Club.

Finally, I wanted to take this opportunity to honor Past President Kim Tucci. Two years ago, he graciously offered to run my campaign even as he battled cancer. Because of the Club, I was able to get to know him, but sadly, it was in his final days. In that time, he provided me with advice and encouragement that have been constant sources of inspiration. All of us that knew him, admired him, and my goal this year is to follow the example he set through his lifetime of selfless service.

If you see me around the Club, make sure you sure stop me and engage me. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club, and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club.

Respectfully yours,

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

ear the end of May, the MAC Presidential torch officially passed from Dan Lett to Angie Minges. We are grateful for President Lett’s leadership during such an unpredictable and challenging time and wish him well. President Minges takes the helm as the first woman President of the Club, and we are looking forward to all she and her Board will accomplish in the next year! On the cover of this publication, you’ll see an image that depicts many “firsts,” including our first female Member and Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Read more about the significance of Minges’ election on page 16 of this Cherry Diamond issue.

As we move from spring into summer, things continue to trend positively at the Club! With so many of our employees and Members vaccinated and CDC and local guidelines relaxing, we can look forward to fully enjoying some of our favorite MAC activities. Please note that under Missouri law, any individual entering the premises or engaging the services of the MAC waives all civil liability against the Club for any damages based on inherent risks associated with an exposure or potential exposure to COVID-19, except for recklessness or willful misconduct. We want to keep our Members and employees safe while enjoying our Club to the fullest!

On another positive note, the membership campaign we’ve been running since November has been a huge success! In the past seven months, 83 Members have received the Platinum Card, and several have received more than $1,000 in referral bonus money. As of mid-May, the Club has 97 new Members, and we’re so excited to welcome them to our MAC community!

For those who aren’t a part of our Platinum Partnership program yet, participants enjoy benefits like unlimited use of athletic and fitness facilities, outdoor pool privileges, access to seven golf courses, Cherry Diamond magazine

subscription, garage parking at the Downtown Clubhouse and more. Participants also enjoy up to $1,200 annually in reduced dues and Diamond Club benefits. Contact the Membership Department at 314-539-4438 to learn more. For those who have secured their Platinum Partners, continuing to refer additional new Members has its benefits! With each referred Member accepted to the Club, you will receive a $500 Club credit in the form of a Platinum Card. There’s no limit on the number of incentives you can earn, but act quickly, since this program will end in August!

In early May, we launched a brand new website and mobile app. We hope you’ve gotten registered and logged in and have taken time to explore its new features. While the layout of the website looks much the same, we’re looking forward to rolling out new features in the coming months. We also hosted Mobile App Launch Week in mid-May, offering free drinks for a week to Members who showed their wait staff that they’d downloaded the new app. We hope you enjoyed the drinks and are using the app to book fitness classes, register for events, check your statements and more! If you have any questions about the new website or mobile app, please email webmaster@mac-stl.org.

Last but certainly not least, I’d like to give a big shout-out to Mungenast St. Louis Acura, the sponsor of the Cherry Diamond magazine and MAC shuttles. Partners like Mungenast are so valuable to the MAC community, and we are grateful for your enthusiasm and dedication to the Club!

It’s a great time to be a part of the MAC family. Come on out and enjoy your Club!

70+ YEARS AT THE MAC

The MAC Celebrates Roger Altvater

On Tuesday, April 27, the MAC celebrated one of its longest Members, the 93-year-old Roger Altvater at with a special luncheon at the Downtown Clubhouse. Past President, Dan Lett, General Manager Wally Smith and Director of Advancement Larry Absheer greeted Altvater, who was accompanied by his brother Bill, who is also a Member, and his son Jeff. After the luncheon, Altvater was presented with a proclamation in honor of his 70 years as a Member of the Club.

Altvater first came to the Missouri Athletic Club with his father, Bill Altvater, Sr., who was also a Member. Like his membership at the MAC, Altvater also

followed in his father's footsteps in business at Western Supplies, which was one of the principal suppliers for the domestic shoe manufacturers. He remained at this company for his entire career and is now the President of the company.

Throughout his Membership, Altvater primarily used the Club for its many varied social functions, as a venue for business meetings and for its historic barbershop, where he has gotten his hair cut for many years.

He has also celebrated many of his life's accomplishments at the Club including his wedding reception in 1953 and his 80th and 90th birthdays. F

s a supplement to my quarterly financial reports, below is a summary of where the Club stands financially through the first eight months of our fiscal year, September through April.

Our Member headcount in April was 2,210, compared to 2,370 last April. Factoring in the Member concessions, our year-to-date dues revenue was $715,000 less favorable than last year.

For the eight months, the Club generated $4,500,000 of operating revenue which was $1,200,000 less favorable than budget, mainly in Rooms and Food and Beverage at both Clubhouses. This is $2,450,000 less than last year’s revenue for the same period. On the positive side, Tennis and West Pro Shop revenues remain strong.

As a result of these lower revenues, our operating departments collectively posted a year-to-date loss of $1,182,000, compared to last year’s loss of $191,000.

On a positive note, we’ve experienced a positive variance of $210,000 in Repairs and Utilities compared to budget, $142,000 in General Clubhouse expenses, and $134,000 in Administrative and General expenses.

With the expansion of the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC), we now know that the Club qualifies for the credits through the second quarter of the calendar year 2021. We’ve recognized over

$1,500,000 in ERTC credits through the end of April.

As a result, the Club has experienced a positive operating cash flow of $1,780,000 year-to-date. This is nearly $1,491,000 better than budget, and $568,000 better than last year.

Looking ahead through August, the end of the fiscal year, we anticipate our Member headcount to surpass 2,300 due to strong recruitment activity. Overnight room revenue and banquet revenue are projected to steadily increase but remain less favorable than budget, while expenses should continue to trend under budget. We will also have the benefit of the ERTC through June which will give a boost to cash flow.

With the lifting of restrictions, we anticipate increasing Member activity in the Club and a continued increase in new Members. Now is a great time to share all that your Club has to offer with your friends, neighbors, and family members. See you at the Club! F

MAC MEMBERS Celebrate WOMEN'S WELLNESS WEEK

Artist of thE Quarter Jane Reed

Artist Jane Reed will be exhibiting her paintings from May 6 - July 31 at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. Reed became an artist, while living in Washington, D.C., and continues her painting in St. Louis. She belongs to many art guilds here, and her paintings are shown frequently in group exhibits, museums and galleries.

The week of May 10-14 was devoted to celebrating the women of the Club. Sponsored by the Women's Initiative group, this week was dedicated to being active with daily offered classes. To accommodate all Members, the Club offered in-person, outdoor, and virtual fitness classes. Members also participated in a weeklong game of BINGO card for a chance to win prizes.

The winner of the head-to-toe outfit from the MAC's Pro Shop was Kathleen Tallis. Thank you to all who participated. F

Although Reed paints in varied schools of art, she is primarily a colorist. She feels that art is all about color because of its power to express, and reflect, emotion, communicating the essence of a subject.

From landscapes to portraits, abstraction and still-lifes, she adheres to the theory of “The Muse,” preferring to depend on the right brain to lead in her creations, with the left brain to hold composition in check.

Making History At the MAC

On May 20, Angie Minges took office as President of the Missouri Athletic Club. Her election marked the first time a woman has served as President of this historic institution. On the current Board of Governors, Minges is also joined by two other women, Second Vice President Julie Ahrling and Cheri McLaughlin. In honor of this pioneering group, the Cherry Diamond is taking a look at some of the amazing women who have made the Club what it is today.

16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Since the Club opened its doors in 1903, it has seen many changes. From the building of the second Downtown Clubhouse in 1915 after the first building was razed in a fire to the acquisition of the West Clubhouse, the MAC has done its best to preserve the spirit of the Club while changing with the times. Perhaps one of the most controversial changes was the decision to allow female Membership, which took place in 1988.

That same year, Jackie Joyner-Kersee (or Joyner at the time), dubbed the greatest athlete in the world at the time, took home two awards at the MAC's Sports Personality of the Year Banquet, the Carl O. Bauer Award for the number one amateur athlete and the titular Sports Personality of the Year Award. Along with the award, Joyner-Kersee was given an honorary membership, becoming the first woman to be a Member of the MAC.

"You don't realize how touched I am on the inside to be here and to realize that not as a woman, but as a human being, I was able to walk into the doors and have men welcome me. I know you didn't judge me by the color of my skin, but you judged me as a human being, and I really feel that deep honor," said Joyner Kersee after winning the Sports Personality of the Year Award in 1988.

Today, Joyner-Kersee is much more than a six-time Olympic medalist. Her career post-athletics has been defined by her tireless philanthropic efforts, notably in East St. Louis, dynamic public speeches and advocacy for children's education, racial equality, women's rights and more. She also attends some MAC events.

When asked how she felt about President Minges' election, she said, "Angie being in this position is incredible. It shows growth and progression, and it’s about bringing people from all walks of life together. More and more women believe in what the Missouri Athletic Club is doing. And now to have a female leading the Club just speaks volumes."

Since Joyner-Kersee helped break the initial barriers for women at the Club, many others have followed, becoming influential leaders of the Club. Those featured here are just a small representative of these women. F

ANGIE MINGES

The first woman to be President of the Club, Angie Minges took office on Thursday, May 20 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Minges, who is the Strategic Planning Leader at Nestlé Purina North America, is excited to be a part of the Club's ever-changing landscape.

"The MAC has been around for more than 118 years serving Members who saw value in athletics, camaraderie, community and civic responsibility. To deliver that value to its Members, the MAC is constantly evolving and I'm excited to be a part of the evolution."

In her time at the MAC, she led the Women's Initiative Group and was a part of the Membership Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Board of Governors. She claims that her experience on the Board has been great, saying that she's "truly enjoyed working with other Members to enhance the future of the Club."

In addition to her work at the Club, she has participated in several outside activities such as the Nestlé Purina Women's Leadership Forum, Stadia Ventures Mentorship, Girl Scouts Women's Leadership Network and more.

When speaking about her hopes for the future of the MAC, Minges said, " I hope women continue to want to lead within the Club, they find great mentors to help them both personally and professionally and they find the camaraderie and friendships I have found through my experience. The MAC is a very special place and I hope that any female Member sees the unique value the MAC can offer anyone who chooses to join our Club."

You don't realize how touched I am on the inside to be here and to realize that not as a woman, but as a human being, I was able to walk into the doors and have men welcome me."

JULIE AHRLING

Among some of the Club's most influential leaders is the Club's current Second Vice President Julie Ahrling. Ahrling, who holds the position of Vice President, Treasury Management at Enterprise Bank & Trust an d has served on several external committees such as the Saint Louis Sports Commission and the Ronald McDonald House Kids & Clays committee. Her contributions to the Club have been numerous. She has served the Club in various roles including being part of the Women's Initiative Group, Finance Committee, Charitable Society for Children, is one of the founders of the MAC PAC Social Club, the MAC's newest CWC. She has also hosted several events and has brought in many new Members to the Club.

CHERI MCLAUGHLIN

After the 2021 Club Election, Cheri McLaughlin was elected to the Board of Governors. This will be her second term on the Board. McLaughlin, co-owner and president of Sparks Milling Digital, has been involved in many MAC committees such as the Compensation Committee, Planning Committee, Liaison to Foundation and much more.

When asked why she believes women should be represented in leadership roles, she said, "I value skillful leaders period. The Club welcomes and values gifts and talents from both men and women, and having women step up and take the initiative to go through our 'farm system' and participate in our competitive elections puts them on equal footing with the men who run for those positions. By doing so they are valued as the leaders they are, not just a checkbox on a diversity scoreboard."

JUDITH HANSES

Judith Hanses was elected to the MAC Board of Governors in 2011 after a career in leadership and management. She, along with the other Governors at the time, assisted in growing the MAC through the Clubs within the Club, the acquisition of the West Clubhouse and more. In addition to her work on the Board, Hanses has been a part of the Club Life Committee, the Women's Initiative Group and is active in the American Legion Post 4 and the Annual Veteran's Day Commemoration.

When asked what she thinks of this year's historic election, she said, "Angie Minges’ election to president demonstrates the Club’s paradigm shift to more women assuming positions of leadership. Ms. Minges is a proven leader in the corporate world and will build upon the MAC’s longstanding reputation of strong leaders at the helm."

REBEKAH KINGSTON

Rebekah Kingston served on the MAC's Board of Governors from 2014-2017 but has been a Member of the Club for her entire life. Knowing this, she had no hesitation in accepting the nomination to run for the Board. She said that though she was the solitary woman on the Board for the majority of her time at the Club, she never felt singled out or out of place.

Upon learning about Minges' election, she said she admires her as both a friend and as the leader of the Club.

"I think it goes without saying that the MAC has, until very recently, been viewed as primarily a 'men’s club.' Angie’s election will most certainly help to eliminate that stereotype and pave the way for future woman leaders. I’m hopeful that this comes by way of not only more female Board Members but also that more women join as 'primary Members' as well."

WHAT'S ON THE WEB

MAC Launches New Website and App

On Wednesday, May 5, the MAC launched its new website and branded mobile app, making this change to provide a more seamless website experience for both Members and staff. In its first two weeks, more than 1,000 people had downloaded the new app, and 1,577 Members have registered for the new website.

Many areas of the website may look familiar to Members, as we opted to keep the appearance and navigation largely the same to prevent confusion. The website will still allow Members to pay their statements, book a court, view the roster, check the menus and much more.

One main component that affects many Members is the ACH billing system. For their security, Members who are enrolled in auto-payments will need to re-enter their banking information on the website upon its launch to ensure the electronic payments continue to process, and those who were used to viewing their statements online will need to update their profiles to be able to access them. Members must transition their information to the new website because it will not carry over.

The week of May 17-21, the MAC hosted its Mobile App Launch week, where Members were treated to a different drink on the house for downloading the new mobile app.

As with all website launches, we will be working diligently to ensure there are no glitches or faulty areas of the site, but if you should encounter something that’s not functioning properly, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at webmaster@mac-stl.org.

We’re striving to create the best online experience for our Members, and we appreciate your patience as we make this transition! F

MAC PARTNERS WITH

The MAC now offers in-house physical therapy services. SSM Health was announced as the physical therapy provider for the MAC early last year. The clinic, located at the West Clubhouse, offers a one-ofa-kind environment, exclusive to MAC Members and their families, to provide preventative, rehabilitative and services that maximize function and promote well-being.

What to Expect

Billy Ferris, PT, DPT, is the physical therapist for the clinic, which focuses on caring for each patient and helping the patient achieve his/her goals. During the initial appointment, Ferris will ask about each Member's injury, home environment, activity level, interests and goals. He will then provide a roadmap for treatment and, most importantly, help Members get back to daily life. Ferris will also check your strength and flexibility. During that first appointment, the goal is to provide information about:

F The injury

F The treatment plan and how it will help

F The number of appointments to expect for treatment

Through therapy, he hopes to work together to help Members improve their quality of life and get back to the activities they enjoy.

Scheduling Information

Please call 314-822-3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. The fax number is 314-822-3056. At the time of scheduling, Members will receive an email of the paperwork to complete prior to your appointment. Often, treatment will begin during the first appointment, which will be 45-60 minutes.

Scheduling Information

Our staff will review Members' plan benefits received from their insurance company. Additionally, they bill the insurance company on Members' behalf and work to collect the amount owed. This would include the deductible, coinsurance, co-pay or any service not covered by the insurance plan. Contact the insurance company before the first appointment to confirm therapy services.

To Leave A Legacy At the MAC

Hundreds of MAC Members have been Members for decades. And many are second, third or even fourth-generation Members.

And as you know, Membership in the MAC is a family thing. Countless Members have grown up in the Club and their families have been enjoying Club life at the MAC for as long as anyone can remember.

The bottom line is that the MAC and our fellow Members are part of our way of life. Life without the MAC would just not be as rewarding.

We all want the MAC to be able to thrive long after we are gone. And we want future generations to continue to enjoy everything about the Club that we cherish. So, we invite you to help your Club have the resources to make the Club everything it can be for decades to come.

In order to leave a lasting legacy at your Club, we invite you to seriously consider remembering the MAC or the MAC Preservation Foundation in your will or trust, or as a beneficiary on one of your retirement or investment accounts, or on a life insurance policy. And if you do, please let us know so that we can welcome you as a Member of the MAC Legends Society which affords its Members special privileges.

What Are the Next Steps?

1. Contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Philanthropy, or Larry Absheer, Director of Advancement, to learn more about wills, trusts, and other estate planning topics.

2. Allow Cynthia or Larry to help show you how easy it is to set up a beneficiary designation.

Though small in numbers engaged, the Battle of Bunker Hill altered the course of the War and has loomed large in American Lore for 246 years. Join the MHC as Mr. Boyce talks about "One Step Further: How the Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17th, 1775, altered what was at stake in the American Revolution and how Colonial Boston's unique geography influenced the battle's outcome."

Bed Build Day Supports 2021 CSC Charity

Cool temperatures set the scene for the inaugural “Bed Build” outside the Missouri Athletic Club’s West Clubhouse. On Saturday, May 15, dozens of Members, employees, friends and families joined volunteers with Sleep in Heavenly Peace throughout the day to sand, stain and hammer beds for childrenin-need in the St. Louis area.

The build is the first in-person event sponsored by the Club’s Charitable Society for Children which traditionally collects monetary donations throughout the year at events and member drives. This year, the group decided that volunteer efforts will be part of its mission and the Bed Build was scheduled.

Member Nancy Pasternak Cunneen nominated Sleep in Heavenly Peace to the CSC after doing a television story on the group. It’s estimated that 26,000 children in the region do not have a bed. “Sleep in Heavenly Peace is such an amazing

organization that has a direct impact on the St. Louis region. Seeing the faces of little kids when they find out they’ll no longer be sleeping on the floor and now have a new bed, is priceless,” she added.

The volunteers, including new MAC President Angie Minges, successfully built 30 new beds for the organization. A twin bedding drive also accompanied the Bed Build. Members brought in new kid-themed twin bedding to donate. The organization has an Amazon Wish List for those who still want to participate. Contact Cynthia Goudy at cgoudy@mac-stl.org to learn more.

SHP’s chapter president Steve McLean thanked volunteers for their efforts which made an impact on the lives of 30 children in the St. Louis area. Special thanks to CSC’S Nat Walsh and MAC General Manager Darrin Harnetiaux and his employees for helping organize and run the event. F

The MAC offers a variety of Clubs Within the Club to bring together Members with common interests.
