from the president COVID-19 continues to dominate our lives and impact our way of life. With no spectator sports, no shows, no concerts, no events, our social and recreational options in life are currently limited. As humans, we cannot remain entirely detached. Fortunately, our Club provides a refuge for us to safely eat, drink, stay fit, enjoy the pool and engage in small group activities. Like you, I am tired of hearing that these are “challenging times,” but they are – and the MAC affords us the opportunity to retain a sense of normalcy and continue to build memories and forge relationships at a time when we need them most. In short, our Club experience is as important and relevant as ever. Our Members and employees express feelings of safety at the Club. Outdoor dining at the MAC’s West Clubhouse is just one example of the safe, social access the Club provides. Consistent application of cleaning protocols and the current reservation practice ensures social distancing and a safe environment. By following the guidelines, wearing our masks and following hygiene procedures, we each do our part to protect each other. At this writing, most of our facilities are (or will soon be) operating at 100 percent capacity, and many of the abundance of amenities our Members relish have returned. Members are particularly enjoying the newly completed Phase Two fitness areas. We held two weddings at the Downtown Clubhouse in June and helped make the dreams of

two young couples a reality. Our friendly, experienced and service-oriented staff is ready to help you plan an appropriate occasion for your family or business and exceed your expectations. While our membership remained resilient since the start of the pandemic, some of our Members could not sustain their membership owing to the disruption of COVID on their lives. We hope to welcome all of those Members back to the Club when certainty returns for them. In the meantime, we recognize that membership is the lifeblood of our Club, so we must seek new Members. A thriving and engaged membership sustains our Club. We are all part of the MAC membership team. Who better to convey the unrivaled value of an MAC membership than a current Member who recognizes the impact of the Club on their life and the lives of their family members; Members who have made lifetime business and personal relationships at a Platinum Club of America? Our colleagues, acquaintances, customers, vendors and service providers represent opportunities to expand our Club. Our membership staff stands ready to help cultivate potential Members and introduce them to the Club. As you promote the Club, you can send your member prospects to Rodney Stoyer, Director of Membership at rstoyer@macstl.org. Rodney or another colleague from the membership staff will engage with your prospect and highlight aspects of the Club that may appeal to them, whether

it is athletics and fitness, dining, social, business, networking, Clubs Within the Club or reciprocal club opportunities. August is Foundations’ Month. We are grateful for how our Members and the public support our foundations. The current signature endeavor is the Trulaske Project. The Robert J. Trulaske Family Foundation that supports historic buildings made a lead donation to the MAC Preservation Foundation for the restoration of the exterior of our Downtown Clubhouse. That project is nearly halfway complete. We expect the project to finish in September, and the newly installed lighting at the top of the Clubhouse will illuminate the building for all to appreciate. Foundations’ Month ends with the golf tournament at Glen Echo on Aug. 31. While golf spots are sold out, there are plenty of opportunities to support the outing, including attending the dinner and donating auction items. Please contact Katie Maurer, Director of Special Events at kmaurer@mac-stl.org. Our Club is open. In the unusual times in which we find ourselves, the MAC is our second home and provides a welcome departure from our home offices and the limited opportunities currently available outside our homes. I hope to see you at the Club soon!

Dan Lett, President Missouri Athletic Club

A thriving and engaged membership sustains our Club. We are all a part of the MAC membership team.

from the board On page 4 of this month’s Cherry Diamond, you will find a message from Chief Financial Officer Pam Roth. In this report, Roth discusses the concessions that were put in place at the beginning of the third quarter of our fiscal year. These concessions total more than $180,000 per month for the Club. We feel the right thing to do is continue on with the majority of these concessions until the Club is back up to full capacity. As we have planned continued capital improvements, we plan to reinstate capital fees starting July 31 as the capital fee dollars as essential in keeping the Club systems, facilities and equipment in good operating order.

As a reminder, the 2019-2020 Capital Plan was robust and included Phase II of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion, which was completed in March 2020 to much applause and appreciation. This $2.2 million project was funded from club cash flow after three very successful years financially for the Club. Another component of the 2019-2020 Capital Plan was resealing and restriping the West driveway and parking areas, which takes place the first week of August. Moving forward, you will continue to see the concessions noted in the CFO’s column with the exception of the capital fee concession, which will be reflected on

your July 31 statement. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to move forward with improvements to the Club. On another note, unfortunately, we have just taken a step back with St. Louis County and will be reverting to 25 percent facilities capacity from the current 50 percent capacity we have been enjoying. As these restrictions are constantly changing, we recommend you visit the Club’s website for up-to-date information on the Club’s protocols and procedures. We thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate this pandemic and keep your Club thriving and as safe as we can.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to move forward with improvements to the Club.

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

from the chief financial officer 2020 3rd Quarter Financial Report A lot has happened since my last article! The Club welcomed Members back on May 18 and has been gaining momentum ever since. Hours of operation have expanded, and the number of Members permitted into each area has increased. Over 200 employees have been called back to work and trained on our new safety protocols. Throughout the 3rd quarter of our fiscal year, the following member concessions were in place: F No Food & Beverage minimums for Platinum Partner and À La Carte members F Credit to Diamond Club Members for the F&B minimum portion of their dues F No Athletic or locker fees for À La Carte Members F Credit to Diamond Club and Platinum Partner Members for the Athletic fee portion of their dues F No Capital fees for any Members These concessions total over $180,000 per month. On your July 31 statement, you will

continue to see these concessions with the exception of the capital fee concession. This year’s capital plan was robust and included Phase II of the West Fitness expansion which was completed in March. Another component of the capital plan was resealing and restriping the West driveway and parking areas. This is an essential step to maintain the new asphalt surface that was installed two years ago. By the time you read this article, this work should be complete. As you can imagine, our year-to-date financial results have been stalled by the Club’s closure followed by its paced opening due to COVID-19. Key metrics for the first three quarters of our fiscal year include: F Dues revenue of $6,362,000 compared to a budget of $6,670,000, a shortfall of $308,000 F Overnight Rooms revenue of $668,000 vs a budget of $989,000, a variance of $321,000 F West Food & Beverage revenue of $1,770,000 vs a budget of $2,274,000, a variance of $504,000 F Total departmental revenue of

Welcome

$7,106,000 compared to a budget of $9,551,000, a short fall of $2,445,000 F Net Operating Cash Flow (net income before depreciation) totaled $1,200,000 vs a budget of $2,002,000, which was $802,000 less favorable than planned Other benchmarks include: F Total dues-paying members of 2,314, down 84 from last year’s 2,398 F Unrestricted cash totaled $117,000 F The line of credit balance was zero F Long-term bank debt of $6,339,000 with monthly principle payments of $26,000 beginning in November The good news is that all areas of the Club are now open and welcoming Members back. Business levels are growing, and Members are happy to be back in their Club. If you have any questions regarding the Club’s finances, please contact the Club’s Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth, at 314-539-4400 or proth@mac-stl.org. Pam Roth, CHAE Chief Financial Officer

TOP-BOTTOM: LADIES’ SQUASH WEEK; MO STATE DOUBLES; WORLD-CLASS SQUASH EXHIBITION, KARMIM GAWAD VS. GREG GAULTIER

To kick start the squash season, we hosted a fun singles and doubles club box league. Looking to bolster ladies squash, the MAC hosted Ladies Squash Week; a week of free squash clinics where 22 new ladies came, many for the first time. Once a month, the MAC hosted ladies squash social including prosecco by the courts. In October, MAC played RC Cup in a St. Louis derby. The match featured our best singles and doubles A, B, C & D level players. It was a packed house for the fun night of competitive squash. Overall, MAC tied matches and games for the first time in history. Due to a technical glitch of ‘missing score cards’ the Cup stays at the Racquet Club. During MO State Doubles Championships, MAC’s dynamic duo Craig Parker and Mark Gaertner lifted the Cup after a win over Ethan Oetter and Alex Wolff at RC, St. Louis Junior Silver Open: Meg Pruett

GU17 finalist, Sameer Shafqat Semifinalist BU15, Henry Byrne BU17 Finalist, Jude Sorkin BU19 Finalist. Thanksgiving Turkey Burner consisted of handicapped roundrobin play, which ended in a match between top juniors Eli Paul and Henry Byrne. Byrne won by one point in the final game. Verena Saunders and Milissa Beaty were undefeated in their doubles group. Christmas Cracker Champion Pat Dolan got over the finish line for the first time ever with a wooden racquet to claim a cheeky title. January: F MO State Singles Championships: The biggest names in Missouri battled it out for bragging rights and featured a big MAC contingent. F Shout outs to: Meg Pruett Ladies finalist, Sameer Shafqat C finalist, Dan Tlapek D finalist. February: F St Louis Junior Bronze Open: Max

Frank BU11 Winner, Will Frank BU13 Runner Up, CJ Goot BU15 Winner. The World Class Exhibition; presented by John Pruett and IBIS Autism, two World Champions ‘Le French General’ Greg Gaultier and, ‘the Baby-Faced Assassin’ Karim Gawad faced each other. Members hit with the legends in entertaining clinics, experiencing the unreal court craft, dishing out a few taxis and cases of old disco knees! Following this, MAC was treated to a masterclass of swift movement and unreal racquet skills with Karim coming out victorius, 3/1. Thanks to all the patrons and Members for supporting this night to remember. This would not be possible without the Members. I look forward to more exciting events to come as we get back to our feet. See you at the courts, Alex

DOUBLES HANDICAP Winter Classic A new Club classic in the making stirred the pot. The Double Winter Classic was open to all levels, handicapped, randomly paired teams drawn out of the hat. The tournament had twists and turns from start to finish. Michelle Beattie and Marco Bertarelli started down 5.0 points each game before running away with the crown jewels and cleaning up at the business end of the game, defeating Drennan Bailey and Matt Jessee 3 - 1. 15/12, 7/15, 15/12, 15/13. The Mike Donio Memorial Softball Tournament culminated in great games and a lovely tribute to Mike—family and friends coming throughout the day to witness the action and share memories of Mike. The tough pairing, Nick Bahn and Brian Lyss, ousted firepower of Chase Beattie and Tim Engelmeyer 3/1 in the final. The St. Louis squash community raised $1,050 for STL Squash Racquets Association youth squash and $3,150 to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research. Thanks to all who kindly supported and donated to make this a special tournament. After the final, they presented a plaque in 6 F Cherry Diamond F AUG 2020

Mike’s honor; ‘The Mike Donio Award,’ to to the 2019/2020 season’s most improved junior squash player, Margaret Pruett. Pruett had an incredible season reaching 105 in the Girls national U17 ranking. She can be seen at the courts training throughout the week. Her dedication to the game shows when she turns up early to prepare and stays after training to further her practice. She goes the extra mile on and off court working with a trainer, improving both her school exam scores and traveling around the country challenging the best in her age group. She started the season consistently in the top 10 of her bracket and reaching two Silver level finals. Her fruits for the labor enabled her to qualify for the next tier up ‘Gold’ events; playing girls just outside the top 25 in the country. Pruett took out higher-ranked opponents, and passed a few old rivals, finishing three Gold events placing in 13th, and two PBs placing in 11th respectively. In addition to playing squash, Mike Donio introduced Pruett to lacrosse. Congratulations Meg on a fantastic season, keep up the hard work!

AUGUST IS FOU NDAT IONS’ MON T H!

Celebrate the fifth annual Foundations’ Month a variety of ways, and learn more about our projects This past year was a stellar year for the Club’s foundations. As the MAC embarks on its fifth annual Foundations’ Month, recent successes can only be attributed to the support of Club Members. Not only is the Missouri Athletic Club a premier dining, athletic and social club, but the title of “philanthropic leader” has been added to its list of accomplishments. Thank you for your support and philanthropy. PRESERVATION FOUNDATION The exterior renovations on the Downtown Clubhouse have been progressing as part of the Building on Tradition Campaign to restore the Downtown Clubhouse. This project was made possible through a grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from our Members to the Building on Tradition Fund and at the Preservation Foundation Ball, which took place earlier this year on Feb. 15. Thank you to the many generous Members who were integral in making this project a possibility. These renovations on the exterior of the building are taking place on both the eastern and southern-facing elevations. This project includes tuckpointing, power washing, wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT? Become a Monthly or Planned Giver Two ways to support the Club’s Preservation Foundation: F To become a member of the All-Star team by donating a set amount on each monthly statement (see the donation form on the opposite page). F Remember the Club in your estate. Participate in the Green Chit Initiative Throughout the month, all chits will be green, and you will have an opportunity to join the All-Star program by pledging a gift to the foundations on your chit. The month will end with the annual Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament. Attend the Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament Dinner and Auction On Monday, Aug. 31, the annual Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament, presented by Redbird Carriers and the Stacie Lee Belew Scholarship Fund will take place at Glen Echo Country Club. Golf play is sold out, but register to attend the posttournament dinner and auction! 10:30 a.m.- Registration 11 a.m. – Lunch Noon – Golf 6 p.m. – Dinner and Kim Tucci auction Register online.

FAT H E R S + D A U G H T E R S There is little doubt that fathers and daughters often hold a special place in each others’ hearts. The MAC both cultivates and celebrates this special bond with the annual Father-Daughter Banquet. In the late spring of 1947, the Club hosted the first Fathers’ and Daughters’ Banquet, which included prizes for the largest amount of daughters and youngest daughter, as well as dancing, singing and even a spelling bee. The inaugural event was such a success that they surpassed the original limit of 525 tickets in the first few days and ended up selling 733 instead. “The First annual Fathers’ and Daughters’ Banquet held at the Club on Tuesday evening, June 17, was a sensational success and no doubt will go into the MAC social calendar as a permanent event...” said the Cherry Diamond in July of 1947. As if they knew the future, the Father-Daughter Banquet is still a staple of the MAC calendar after several generations. The event has taken on several different forms over the years from the spelling bee in 1947 to acrobats Leon and Luba in 1985 to dinner theater in 1975 to taking on 12 F Cherry Diamond F AUG 2020

themes inspired by world fashions in later years. Though the iteneraries of the night has changed a bit over the years, the spirit of the event has never wavered. When the MAC first conceptualized the event, the worry was that dads would be reluctant to join their daughters on the dance floor at the end of the night. On the contrary, the earliest articles of the magazine indicated that the floor was filled with fathers twirling their girls around the dance floor. This facet of the night has seemed to continue ever since then. Many famous faces have been in attendance including TV stars Diane Joyce, Russ David and even Stan Musial, who remained good humored as attendees clamored to get his autograph. Although the social calendar was disrupted this year, Members will be happy to know that the event will still take place, albeit later than usual. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, MAC dads and their daughters will make their way to the Downtown Clubhouse once again for this iconic and historic event. They can look forward to a magical night filled with dinner, dancing, pictures, carriage rides and entertainment.
