from the president Every great challenge represents an opportunity for renewal and growth. Like many institutions, the MAC has adapted to a changing environment. I am pleased that our Club endures despite the challenges presented by the ongoing pandemic. Our loyal membership and committed staff navigate the changing requirements to ensure a safe and valuable experience at the Club. Through our first month of the fiscal year, we remain on track with our budgeted expectations. The Board and staff will continue to work hard to offer appropriate athletic, social and dining experiences during this time. Another benefit of your MAC membership is the connections you make and the networking opportunities afforded by the Club. The MAC Members represent the movers and shakers of the St. Louis region. Despite the limitations presented by the pandemic, our MAC network allows us to stay in touch, continue to conduct business - whether live or virtual - and make things happen. October was a busy month at the Club. We hosted the Women of Distinction event, honoring seven local women revolutionary in business, civic engagement, philanthropic programs and mentorship. The event was a hybrid with live and virtual attendees. We reached out to several local institutions to allow many young women to experience the inspiration from the MAC Women of Distinction. The Oktoberfest event on the garage rooftop was well attended, and Members rocked out to Past President Lawhorn’s band. The annual Classics and

Cocktails event at the West Clubhouse, showcasing several unique automobiles, experienced record attendance. Our Member appreciation events were well received, and the Thursday grill nights at the West Clubhouse were a hit. With our Clubhouses at 50 percent approved capacity, Members comfortably enjoy workouts in the gyms and activities on the courts, as well as fitness classes. We added heaters to the patio to extend the outdoor experience at the West Clubhouse. Now get ready for some terrific fall events! Don your costume for the Adults-Only Halloween Party at the Downtown Clubhouse on Saturday, October 31. The party is co-sponsored by our newest Club Within the Club, the MAC PAC Social Club. The MAC PAC Social Club’s mission is to sponsor social activities and events to promote Member engagement and recruitment. Stay at the Club on Halloween night with $50 hotel rooms for members and guests. Due to popular demand, we continue to offer delicious meals curbside to go Monday through Friday. Our annual Veterans Day celebration is Nov. 5. We will honor our veterans with a great celebration and present awards to several worthy recipients. This is an incredible event and one I assure you will cherish if you attend. Members who are golf fans will come together on Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Downtown Clubhouse to watch the Masters Tournament from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Nov. 18, you can Sip and Shop from an array of vendors at the West Clubhouse from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The

Jack Buck Awards are slated for Dec. 8 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Capacity will be limited for this signature event, so register early. The Trulaske project is nearing completion. The Downtown Clubhouse with its rich history will be sparkling for the upcoming hallmark events like the Veteran’s Day Commemoration and Thanksgiving. Yes, Thanksgiving. The holiday season commences quickly after Halloween. No Club entertains and offers the variety of events and holiday gathering opportunities like the MAC. Please check social media for upcoming events and registration links. Speaking of Thanksgiving, we are thankful to our Members who donated to our Foundations. This year’s generosity was the most in recent memory. The Board also looks forward to continuing the tradition of serving Thanksgiving lunch to the MAC staff. Our staff experienced an incredibly stressful year, and we cannot thank them enough for their dedication, service and sense of humor through it all. While the circumstances around this holiday season may be different than we are accustomed, our Club will offer some normalcy for us. I wish you all the best as and hope that you continue to enjoy your Club as we begin the holiday season.

Dan Lett, President Missouri Athletic Club

from the general manager We are excited to announce that Platinum Clubs of America has named the Missouri Athletic Club the No. 9 athletic club in the country! Since 2000, the MAC has met the criteria to make the list: “universal recognition, excellence in amenities and facilities, caliber of staff and professional service levels, quality and commitment of membership, governance and prudent fiscal management, ability to adapt to changing times, and overall experience.” The election to establish the top 5 percent

of private clubs of excellence takes place in the fall of even years and is conducted over a 90-day period by the Club Leaders Forum. The preliminary ballot is circulated to private club managers all across the country who have the opportunity to nominate additional clubs to appear on the final ballot. The final ballot is distributed to private club managers, presidents and owners. The MAC has been through many changes in the past two decades we’ve made this list, but the caliber of service the Club continues

to provide remains the same. Even in this challenging year, the MAC stands as one of the top clubs in the country, and we are so proud of everyone who has contributed to making this designation possible.

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

“The MAC has been through many changes in the past two decades we’ve made this list, but the caliber of service the Club continues to provide remains the same.”

MAC LISTED IN TOP 10 ATHLETIC CLUBS

by Platinum Clubs of America

Last month, Platinum Clubs of America named the Missouri Athletic Club the No. 9 athletic club in the country. Since 2000, the MAC has met the criteria to make the list: “universal recognition, excellence in amenities and facilities, caliber of staff and professional service levels, quality and commitment of membership, governance and prudent fiscal management, ability

to adapt to changing times, and overall experience.” Launched in 1997 by Club Leaders Forum, Platinum Clubs of America was revitalized in 2014. Over the past two decades, Platinum Clubs has earned the reputation as the most respected recognition in Private Club Excellence. The inspiration for the concept came from John Sibbald, who continued to hear Clubs profess “they were the best.” Sibbald developed Platinum Clubs of America to allow private club managers, presidents and owners to make that distinction. Over the years, with input from the Club Leaders Forum Advisory Board, the

seven selection criteria have been updated to be relevant and adapt to changing times in the industry. Platinum status is awarded in five categories: country clubs, golf, city, athletic and yacht clubs. The election to establish the top 5 percent of private clubs of excellence takes place in the autumn of even years and is conducted over a 90-day period. This latest designation is for 20212022. The MAC ranked in between the Los Angeles Athletic Club and the Port Royal Club in Naples, Fla. View the full list at platinumclubsofamerica.com/top-20athletic-clubs.

from the finance chairman August marked the end of fiscal year 2020 for the Club. You may recall that last year the Club reported that fiscal year 2019 was the third year in a row that we set a record with respect to cash flow generated. Although we cannot make that statement again, there was much good news during 2020. During the first half of our fiscal year, the Club generated strong cash flow as a result of our solid planning process. This allowed us to complete Phase II of the West Fitness Renovation as planned. Phase II included a complete overhaul of the Cardio Room including an expansion of the room itself as well as new cardio equipment. It also incorporated a dedicated High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Room with all new equipment, a brand-new Group X Room, and a state-of-the-art Spinning Studio. At the same time, we added a dedicated Youth Classroom, an Assessment Room, a remodel of the Racquetball Courts including a new lounge area and new TVs throughout. What an exciting project! I hope you’ve had a chance to utilize all these great new amenities. Other improvements at the West Clubhouse included repairs to the portecochere, TVs installed in the alcoves, and resealing and restriping the driveway and

parking areas. This was an essential step to maintain the new asphalt surface that was installed two years ago. At the Downtown Clubhouse the Athletics department received new Precor ellipticals, the Food and Beverage area received new banquet tables and other equipment and additional security cameras were installed. Our Membership headcount ended the year at 2,254, down 193 from August 2019. We are now planning new recruitment initiatives to encourage those Members affected by COVID-19 to return to the Club, along with attractive incentives to reward existing Members for helping to recruit new Members. Operating revenues totaled $8,600,000 compared to $12,200,000 in fiscal year 2019. While all departments experienced some shortfall in revenue, the Overnight Rooms department and our Food and Beverage departments felt the largest impact. Please help your Club cultivate its operating revenues by referring business to the Club. If you’re part of a board or club that meets regularly, consider holding these meetings at the MAC. And if your company or association is planning their holiday parties, give our catering professionals a call. The MAC is an excellent venue for these types of

gatherings, and we are open and ready to help plan your next event! As of the end of August, the Club had long-term bank debt of $6,339,000 with monthly principal payments of $26,000 beginning in November, and the line of credit balance was $146,000. Another piece of good news is that MAC Redevelopment Corp., which owns our garage, paid off its long-term debt on schedule at the end of the fiscal year. Although the Club is experiencing challenges like many other businesses, our Finance Committee and Board of Governors have their finger on the pulse of the Club’s financial position and have taken steps to ensure our financial stability. I am honored to serve as the Club’s Finance Chairman this year and help steer the Club through these unusual times. The good news is that all areas of both Clubhouses are open. Hours of operation and capacity levels have expanded. Business levels are steadily increasing, and Members are happy to be back in their Club. Come out and support your Club!

Matt Gross, Finance Chairman Missouri Athletic Club

Staying Safe

AT THE DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE When the MAC conducted its COVID-19-related survey at the end of August, several Members reported they felt unsafe visiting the Downtown Clubhouse and Downtown St. Louis in general. GM Wally Smith talked about security measures that have been taken to ensures Members’ safety in a video sent out at the end of September, and work continues to strengthen these efforts. Over the course of the past year, the Club spent $30,000 to have new LEDs installed in the parking garage as part of a PACE project. New lighting has also been installed out on the valet lot as well, though the MAC does not own that lot. During the initial months of the pandemic and periods of unrest, the Downtown Clubhouse consolidated its open doors to just the Lucas Avenue entrance, with the remainder of the Clubhouse secured. The Lucas Avenue entrance has 24/7 security, with additional security during times of Member activity between the garage and Clubhouse. Club leadership has been working with Hackett Security and GardaWorld to evaluate camera locations, as well. In the past several months, 35 new cameras have been installed throughout the Downtown Clubhouse. The security team is also in the process of replacing 20 analog cameras that don’t feature high-quality images or have zoom capabilities. Security supervisor Fred Nelson, who has been with the MAC since 1994, knows “every crevice of the building inside and out” and has been on the security team for 15 years. He notes that while other hotels in the Downtown St. Louis area have fairly frequent reports of garage break-ins, the MAC does not,

BUILDING A LEGACY Project to Restore the Downtown Clubhouse Nears Completion

The exterior renovations on the Downtown Clubhouse should be completed in the next few weeks. The project began earlier this year as part of the Building on Tradition Campaign to restore and beautify the Downtown Clubhouse. This project was made possible through a grant

and there haven’t been any major crimes around the Clubhouse. “We have the ability to lock doors down during periods of unrest, and that’s something that I can even do from home,” Nelson says. Other features that have been added to include panic switches in the steam and sauna rooms and women’s locker room Downtown. Some doors, like the garage door, are alarmed after they’re locked and alert the security desk and Nelson’s cell phone if there’s a disturbance. There are also time-release locks on the doors which are scheduled to open at certain times in the morning and then lock at night. They can be adjusted at any time. Additionally, Club leadership has also established a Memberstaff security task force that meets regularly to assess our systems and to plan additional safety measures. GM Wally Smith said this group plans to engage with St. Louis City leadership and “firmly have a presence and interest in City safety plan initiatives.” Smith noted that the MAC will have a “united voice” in pressuring the need for safety as 2,200 concerned St. Louisans and members of the Downtown St. Louis community. The security team at the Downtown Clubhouse collectively has years of experience and is equipped to ensure the safety of MAC Members no matter the time of day. Danny Slay is a United States Marine Corps veteran and retired police officer who has worked at the MAC since 2014. Greg Thompson has been with the Club since 2013 and Richard Scholl since 1993. “We know the Members,” Nelson said. “If anyone wants to be walked to the garage, just ask at the desk anytime.”

from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from our Members to the Building on Tradition Fund and at the Preservation Foundation Ball, which took place earlier this year on Feb. 15. Thank you to the many generous Members who were integral in making this project a possibility. These renovations on the exterior of the building are taking place on both the eastern and southern-facing elevations. This project includes tuckpointing, power washing, wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent. Cherry Diamond F NOV 2020 F 7

Secure Your Platinum Partnership Status MAC Adds Exciting New Features to the Platinum Partnership Program The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One side-effect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F Effective Oct. 1, all Members in the Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should 8 F Cherry Diamond F NOV 2020

resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or A la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership. 2020 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION PROGRAM Each year since 2011, the MAC has honored seven local women who have been boundless in business, civic engagement and philanthropic programs by demonstrating excellence, growth, grit and empathy. The honorees this year were Christine Candio, former FACHE President and CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital; Theresa Carrington, CEO of Ten by Three, international speaker, author and mentor; Kate Ewing, director of strategic business development and marketing at Sandberg Phoenix; Mary Elizabeth Grimes, president of Marian Middle School; Genny Jessee, executive director of the June Jessee Memorial Foundation; Katy Vu, Senior VP, CFO of Bunzl; and Rising Star Katie Shields, head

women’s soccer coach at Saint Louis University. In 2020, MAC continued the tradition, albeit with a new spin. To help with social distancing and capacity regulations, the Women's Initiative Group decided to host a hybrid event, with many attendees viewing the event online, while honorees and their guests attended the event in person. Countdown to the Top 50 Sports Personalities

OF THE PAST HALF-CENTURY TU E S DAY, D EC . 8

The 2020 Jack Buck Sports Awards, presented by Redbird Carriers, will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Follow MAC emails and social media for further details.

CRAIG BERUBE, BOB GIBSON, VLADIMIR TARASENKO, KURT WARNER, LOU BROCK, ALBERT PUJOLS, JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE, BRETT HULL, ADAM WAINWRIGHT AND OZZIE SMITH

This year has been unlike any other in sports history, with abbreviated seasons and teams playing in empty venues. For the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year, the MAC takes a look back and celebrating the 50 years of the award. In 1970, Missouri Athletic Club Member Jack Buck established the Sports Personality of the Year Award to annually honor the top figure in St. Louis. For a half-century, beginning with Bob Gibson winning the inaugural award and through the most recent honoree Craig Berube in 2019, an impressive list of Hall of Famers, star players and coaching legends have received the prestigious trophy at the MAC’s Jack Buck Awards Banquet. Previously, only Members of the MAC had been eligible to vote for the Sports

Personality of the Year Award. But to commemorate the golden anniversary of the award, voting opened to all St. Louis sports fans this year. They had the opportunity to vote for the top 50 St. Louis Sports Personalities of the past 50 years (1970-2020). Online voting concluded Friday, Oct. 30. On Dec. 8, the results of the Top 50 will be revealed through a countdown at the Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet presented by Redbird Carriers. The show will air live on KMOX Radio and will be recorded for a show on FoxSports Midwest. For more on the history of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Sports Personality of the Year Award and a complete list of past winners, visit our website.

This event always sells out early, so be on the lookout for more information in the MAC’s emails or on social media.

HONOR V ETER A NS

this Veterans Day

Several weeks later, Croak held the important task of manning the anchor of LCI 491 at Omaha Beach during D-Day. He and his crew held the task of transporting the Army’s second division away from the beach. Following the events of D-Day, Croak joined the invasion of Japan. “The Missouri Athletic Club and the Rotary Club of St. Louis sponsor the Veterans Day Commemoration and awards luncheon. The POW/MIA ceremony and the stirring speeches from key military leaders provide a solemn and emotional backdrop honoring and thanking our Veteran community for their service and sacrifice. For me, it is a day to remember past missions, exploits, and comrades as we went about the nation’s business because the Veterans’ courage, selfless service, patriotism and commitment serve as a rallying cry for future generations and inspires us to renew our patriotic spirit. It is a day when I rededicate myself to assisting the Veteran community because we, as senior leaders, never really stop serving.” — MAC Governor Tracy Beckette Brigadier General (R), AUS Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA), Missouri (East) 14 F Cherry Diamond F NOV 2020

MAC EMPLOYEE Holiday Fund

The holiday season is fast approaching, which prompts us to reflect on the outstanding year of events and accomplishments that we have enjoyed. None of these events would have been possible without the diligent work throughout the year of our wonderful staff. We see them every day, or if we don’t see them, we see the effects of their work in the locker rooms, the kitchen, the basement laundry room and engineering offices. Our hardworking staff is what keeps both clubhouses running smoothly. Annually, the Employee Holiday Fund extends a holiday bonus to the MAC staff and supports the MAC’s charitable entities. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s membership for this outpouring of appreciation, and a small portion of the funds are allocated to the Preservation Foundation and the CSC and used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. On your Oct. 31, 2020 statement (both paper and digital), please notice a Voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 shown as “Empl Holiday/Foundations Cont.” The funds will be allocated as shown unless you notify the accounting office otherwise. TRUNK-R-

Treat

Despite the complications that surround trick-or-treating during this time, Members and their children were able to participate in the MAC's Trunk-R-Treat event on Saturday, Oct. 24 in the West Clubhouse parking lot. Parents mingled while their little princesses, superheroes, creepy creatures and more went from one decorated car to another gathering the tastiest goodies to add to their Halloween baskets. To help prevent the spreading of the virus, people who participated in the event were asked to individually wrap goody bags for the trunk-or-treaters. Families even brought their dogs to join in the fun, making the day extra special.

O R I E N TAT I O N TO CLUB GOVERNANCE On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Club Members who were either thinking about getting involved in Club leadership or those already involved gathered at the West Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. This special open house gave Members who wanted to learn more about service on one of the Club's five official committees and the Board of Governors a chance to ask questions and mingle with Members who already are a part of these groups. This event included light refreshments as well as hors d'oeuvres for event attendees.

Fuhrig has expressed his excitement about joining the team and looks forward to a long-tenured career with the MAC.

Pickleball Tips

In pickleball, as in many paddle and racquet sports, how you start the point is vitally important. In this case, the serve and return of serve. Strategy in pickleball doubles relies heavily on rushing the net. The returning team will immediately rush the net after the serve. It is important to try and get your serve deep in the box to make this more difficult. Likewise, the serving team will try and rush the net after the return has bounced. It is equally important to work on getting your return deep in the court to apply pressure. Starting points with a deep serve and deep return will greatly improve your pickleball game! - Dave Fuhrig

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

Chris McDougal Explains WWII MEMORY PRESERVATION TO

Military History Club

The Military History Club has been fortunate to hear many tell their own stories, but such memories are fleeting. For their November meeting, they welcome Chris McDougal, Director of Archives and Library, National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas who will talk about the history of the NMPW’s ongoing mission to preserve and share first-hand memories of World War II. The National Museum of the Pacific War honors the millions of Americans who stood for freedom and democracy and to defeat the enemy in World War II's Asiatic-Pacific Theater World War II. Spread across six acres, the Museum complex encompasses more than 50,000 square feet of indoor exhibits, state-of-the-art archives and collections, and interactive media presentations, in addition to outdoor exhibits and memorials. This meeting will take place on Nov. 24 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Register online. 26 F Cherry Diamond F NOV 2020

Aquarium to do just that. Feeding the turtles from the end of a stick was more our style. On a back-of-the-house tour, we visited the animal quarantine area and learned that the massive filtering system pumps 10 thousand gallons of water a minute to keep the water in the viewing tanks clean and safe for the animals. Visit the Aquarium yourself to learn why the sharks do not eat the rainbow of other fish in their massive tank. Although we are way too young to have ridden the Ferris Wheel at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, we thought how much of a wonder it must have been to those fairgoers as we completed our trip to Union Station with a ride on The Wheel.
