Welcome Fellow Nutrition Entrepreneur

Dear fellow Spring Summit attendee, I’m beyond excited to have you here for the third annual NE DPG Spring Summit. We’ve spent nearly a year preparing for this event. We’ve worked hard to fine-tune every detail for you–from reading through last year’s community boards and surveys to countless discussions with the Spring Summit Committee. In addition to hearing what you want, we’ve poured a lot of our hearts into creating this event. With confidence, I can say, we’ve listened to what you wanted and have worked hard to make it a great event!

My hope is you walk away from the Spring Summit inspired, empowered, and motivated to invest in yourself and your business.

To help you maximize your experience this week, here are some things for you to do:

y Interact with your peers, colleagues, and future acquaintances during the networking event or via the chat feature while watching sessions.

y Carve out time to dig into the community boards, meet like-minded dietitians, and learn more about what’s happening in our profession.

y Engage in the sessions to learn new ways to optimize your business workflows, overcome failure, better manage your time, and so much more!

y Apply the knowledge gained this week to create, or grow, an abundant business.

When you fully engage in this event, the liveliness is palpable. Can you feel it? It’s the secret sauce that energizes you to dig into your business and take it to the next level.

I look forward to meeting you and watching you level up your business in the coming months.

In health and happiness,

Kristi Coughlin, MS, RDN, is not your typical nutrition entrepreneur. After recognizing private practice wasn’t her thing, she opened Bring About Happy — an uplifting product-based business. In her spare time, Kristi can be found eating pizza, at the lake with her husband and kids, or drinking coffee with friends.

PRO TIP: Download the Whova app now! Get familiar with it before the Summit starts so you can make connections with other attendees early and often!

Note from the NE Ventures Newsletter Editor

MEAGAN

As a nutrition entrepreneur, we can sometimes feel as though we’re living on an island in our business because a lot of us no longer work in typical 9-5 jobs. For this reason (and many other reasons) I am so grateful that NE is available for all of us to have the opportunity to connect with likeminded dietitians. One of the perks of being newsletter editor is the chance

to collaborate with all the amazing Executive Committee members. It is exciting to hear different viewpoints as this special guide has been created for YOU, one of the Spring Summit attendees. The following program has been lovingly crafted by our Spring Summit committee with the hope that it can energize you with new ways to think and grow as individuals and/ or business owners. I encourage you to take some time to read through this guide to maximize your Summit experience this year.

Meagan O’Connor, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN, is a sports dietitian, private practice owner, and is the team dietitian for USA Weightlifting. In her free time, she enjoys picking up heavy things and then putting them back down (AKA training/competing in powerlifting).

Event Format

We have a full schedule with 13+ CPE sessions, networking events, and an Expo. Each CPE session lasts for 60 minutes and consists of a 30-45 minute educational portion followed by a Q&A session to fill the remainder of the hour.

All live session recordings will be available for viewing within 24 hours of the live session time. Watch them anytime during the Summit or view them for up to three months after the conference until June 9th, 2023.

TAKE NOTE

y The activity number for each session can be found in the Event Schedule on page 4. One (1) CPEU is equivalent to a one-hour educational session. y Performance Indicators have been assigned to each educational session. This information is subjective, so select those that best correlate with your Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) needs.

Almost as Good as a Powerball Ticket

PAM CORNELIUS, RD, LDN INCOMING DIRECTOR OF MEETING

Ok, maybe not as good as a winning Powerball ticket, but Spring Summit 2023 has you covered for games and prizes. Engage, interact, have some fun, and you might win one of our fantastic prizes. Here is a quick tutorial on how you can be in it to win it.

Leaderboard Contest: You will find the Leaderboard under “Additional Resources” on the Whova app. Here you will find your current rank, your total accumulated points, and a variety of challenges to earn more points. Earning points is as easy as setting up your profile, posting questions, saying ‘hi’ to other participants, filling out surveys, and many other activities. Two participants with the highest scores at the close of the conference will earn prizes.

Passport Contest: We invite you to visit, learn from, and chat with our exciting exhibitors. You will enter the Exhibitor Hall by clicking on Exhibitors in the left sidebar of Whova for Desktop. Virtually visit the exhibitor booths and collect stamps for your Spring Summit 2023 passport. To earn a stamp, stop by a booth and like, message, and accept their deals or offers (Whova requires all 3). Collect at least 8 stamps to be entered into our passport contest. Three winners will be randomly selected.

Survey Contest: NE wants your feedback! To reward you for providing it, we want to offer you a chance to win a 1-year NE DPG Membership. Surveys will be offered after sessions and at the end of the conference. Each completed survey earns you an entry. The more surveys you complete, the more tickets you earn. One lucky winner will be selected during the closing session; winner must be present to win.

Claiming Your Prize: The lucky winners will select their prize from among five fantastic choices (see page 10) and will be notified via email at the end of the conference. To claim the prize, winners will simply respond to the email notification, and their chosen prize will be delivered.

I look forward to seeing your name at the top of the Leaderboard!

PRO TIP: Want to ask a question for a Q&A but can’t attend the session live? Write your question in the Q&A box associated with that session at any time before the presentation start time. Or click the “Session Q&A” tab (under “Resources” on the desktop version).

All Summit attendees are encouraged to participate in contests. However, NE Executive Committee members, speakers, sponsors, exhibitors, and those participating on behalf of sponsors or exhibitors are ineligible for prizes.

After years of experience as a personal trainer, dietitian, and health coach, Pam Cornelius, RD, LDN just launched Pam Cornelius Nutrition LLC in Charlotte, NC. She offers fun, educational, and supportive virtual diabetes prevention, weight management, and behavior change classes. She is excited to be part of such a dynamic DPG and looks forward to learning from and connecting with NE’s many inspirational dietitians!

Get the Most Out of Your Networking with Exhibitors

Mark your calendars for the Spring Summit Expo hour at 5:00 pm EST on Monday, March 6th!

One of the many benefits of NE DPG’s Spring Summit is networking. It is also one of the things our attendees love the most, including myself. While we often think of networking with other attendees and entrepreneurs, there is also a great benefit in networking with the Spring Summit exhibitors. As a Spring Summit Committee member for three years now, and the past Director of Sponsorship, here are my suggestions for the best ways to interact and engage with exhibitors:

y Complete your Whova profile so exhibitors can know your niche and location.

y Direct message exhibitor staff before, during, and/or after the Summit: introduce yourself, ask about their favorite part of their business, follow-up on ways you can partner, and stay in touch.

y Interact with exhibitors’ representatives using the community board posts.

y Attend live Sponsored Virtual Meetups provided by exhibitors. Be sure to interact with them by asking questions or sharing what you have learned.

y Visit the virtual booths and browse their videos, pictures, products, handouts, and other content to learn more about their company.

y Talk to exhibitors live during the Expo Hour on Monday, March 6th from 5 pm to 6 pm EST.

y Chat with exhibitors through their booth chat box. Share what you like about their booth, products, and/or services.

y Enter exhibit giveaways and promotions.

y Participate in the Passport Contest to win prizes! Earn a stamp at each booth by liking the booth, chatting with the staff through the chat box, and entering their giveaway. When you earn at least 8 stamps, you will be eligible for the Spring Summit prizes!

As a bonus, you can earn up to 1.0 CPEUs for interacting with exhibitors, either live during the designated Expo Hour or on your own time during the Spring Summit.

Community Guidelines

The Whova platform provides us with a unique opportunity to network with other attendees via Community Boards, Virtual Meetups, and the like. Please review the following guidelines before participating in community engagement:

1 Be kind, courteous, and professional. No hate speech or bullying.

2 Respect everyone’s privacy.

3 Promotion is only allowed in the Member MarketPlace Community Board.

4 Whova’s community and engagement features are for socializing and networking, not advertising. Focus on getting to know your network rather than selling products or services.

5 Virtual Meetups may not be created for the express purpose of promoting a business or service, as the goal of such Meetups is to foster conversation and camaraderie. Promotional Meetups are limited to exhibitors only.

Exhibitors are ready to share their resources with you. They want to help support your business growth. Get the most out of your networking by meeting exhibitors and reconnecting after the Summit. Do any number of these things, and you’ll energize your business!

Janine Faber, MEd, RDN, LD, is a nutrition communications consultant focusing on media communications, health professional outreach, and community education. She is often out with her two young kids exploring during the day and enjoying family meals with her whole family at night. You can follow Janine on IG at janine.faber.nutrition.

PRO TIP: Exhibitor booth access works best from a mobile device, especially when trying to connect to live streams. If connecting to live streams from a desktop, Chrome is the preferred browser.

6 If you set up a Virtual Meetup, please attend and lead that Meetup so others joining in the experience will benefit from the networking opportunity.

7 Remember that discussions of pricing, fees, or reimbursement amounts must not appear in any postings.

5 Tips for Making Meaningful Connections at a Virtual Conference

Be sure to tune in to our networking event at 5:00 pm EST on Thursday, March 9th!

We know that making meaningful connections at a virtual conference can be a little tricky, but that’s how our Spring Summit promises to be different. From engaging with fellow attendees through Whova chat boards, to live chats during sessions, to letting your authentic self shine at our networking event, we’re sure you will close out the Spring Summit with the start of at least one new relationship. Remember these tips to get the most out of networking opportunities at Spring Summit:

BE YOUR AUTHENTICALLY AWESOME SELF.

Even though there’s a screen between you and the other person, treat this meeting as you would if you were in person. First impressions still matter even in the virtual setting so be kind, respectful, considerate, and genuine.

SHOW YOUR SMILE.

It may feel a little awkward to smile at a screen, however, this simple act can go a long way toward making others feel comfortable while showing how engaged you are in the conversation.

EXERCISE GOOD NETIQUETTE.

Sure, meeting new people virtually is now an everyday thing, but don’t forget to exercise good netiquette and mind your online manners. To do so, make eye contact, use attentive body language, and minimize distractions to foster a deeper connection. Check out the Community Guidelines for more details (https:// bit.ly/3VPNiDO).

TAKE INITIATIVE.

Whova gives you the ability to start your own discussion thread (under the “Community” tab). Use it to ask questions or network with RDs with similar interests. Alternatively, host a virtual Meetup and network in real time (under “Meet-ups & Virtual Meets” Community Board). Limited to one per attendee.

HAVE FUN!

Leverage the opportunity of being in the same space with other seasoned nutrition entrepreneurs or nutrition entrepreneurs-to-be and share, laugh, guide, and support them while having some fun!

When she isn’t working her hybrid role of part-time beef nutrition advocate/ part-time nutrition entrepreneur, Beth finds joy in family time, outdoor adventures, and self-care.

PRO TIP: Find fellow attendees under the “Attendees” tab. Click on the “Recommended” sub-tab to find attendees who have things in common with you. Direct message anyone you know, or even someone you’ve never met!

Getting Ready for Spring Summit as a Student

DOWNING DIETETIC INTERN

During my undergrad, I always heard how important networking was, but I hadn’t really seen its potential until recently. As a distance, dietetic intern, I knew I’d have the freedom to hand-pick my own rotation sites, interview preceptors, and relocate to a city I’d always dreamed of living in. Let me tell you though, approaching potential preceptors and convincing them to take you on is no easy task. I’m constantly having to sell myself and advocate for my own abilities, and now I understand just how essential networking opportunities can be early in your career. Happily, many RDs offered me their support, some wisdom, and much-needed encouragement for the many challenges that accompany being young in this profession.

Now that all my sites have been secured, I’m in a wonderful position to showcase my expertise. I work daily to build opportunities for myself that might not have otherwise existed. Who knows? That next opportunity may very well be at Spring Summit.

To really get the most out of this event, I know the importance of having my “elevator pitch” ready. Not that there will be any pressure to perform, but being able to tell someone new about yourself in an articulate, concise manner is a great way to kick off introductions (and make an impression!). I’m also planning on taking down lots of notes and asking lots of questions via chat during presentations. After all, I’m attending to learn!

Lasty, I plan to use my position as a dietetic intern to expand my knowledge. I may ask to shadow established dietitians, or even set up a call to learn more about their story or business. These are great ways to build connections and explore the many opportunities within our profession.

In short, here are four big ways to get ready for the Spring Summit as a student:

1 Have a couple of questions locked and loaded to learn more about how an entrepreneur got to where they are or what they plan to do to reach their goals.

Networking Event Questions

Unsure what to ask fellow attendees? We’ve got you covered. To further kick-off the conversation with other attendees, we have curated a collection of prompts to get you talking. Below is the list of questions we will use in our breakout rooms during the networking event on Thursday, March 9th at 5:00 pm EST. Mark your calendar to attend, then keep these questions handy to get the conversation flowing!

2 How do you get inspired when a lack of motivation sets in?

3 What’s one of your favorite entrepreneurial resources? Alternatively, what type of resources are you seeking?

2 Be an active listener. Keep distractions away, turn on your camera, take notes, and ask ALL the questions!

3 Prepare to tell others about yourself and relax – everyone in attendance is excited to meet new dietitians and entrepreneurs. (Even RDNs-to-be!)

4 Don’t be afraid to ask for some contact information and set up a time to chat if you make a connection. Most RDNs are willing to give back and help students find their way.

I look forward to meeting everyone!

Hannah Downing graduated Summa Cum Laude from Oregon State University with minors in Spanish, Chemistry, and Business. When she’s not studying forthe RD exam,Hannah enjoys baking something sweet, blowing off steam at CrossFit,orsampling a pint from one of the many microbreweries in Bend,OR.

1 What is one of your biggest wins as a nutrition entrepreneur? If you are just getting started, what is the biggest goal you’d like to accomplish?

4 Is there anything holding you back from starting your business?

5 As you look to the future of your business or set out on your entrepreneurial journey, what is an area you are most worried about?

6 What’s one of your favorite things about the NE DPG?

7 What’s one piece of advice you would share with a fellow attendee regarding the entrepreneur path?

9 Name one person who has played a vital role in getting you where you are and why?

8 What’s one BIG business goal you have for yourself in the next 1-3 years?

What is your favorite piece of advice, information, or new connections you gained from attending this year’s Spring Summit?

3 Tips to Maximize Your Spring Summit Experience

Last spring I launched my new business on March 1st and Spring Summit started two days later. It was both the best and the worst timing. Being so new to entrepreneurship, the Summit was a treasure trove of the information I was seeking. At the same time, having just launched my business, I now felt compelled to revisit some aspects that had already felt “finished” (e.g. my website). Overall, Spring Summit was key in getting my business off to a good start. I loved the experience of attending as well as the connections I made. Here are a few of my tips for getting the most out of your Summit experience this year:

1 MAKE A PLAN AND ATTEND LIVE (IF POSSIBLE).

Before Spring Summit starts, get on Whova and get familiar with the app and the specific offerings of the Summit. If you’re a first-timer it can be a little overwhelming, so preparation will really help you make the most of the conference. Take some time to review the agenda and mark which events you want to attend. Be sure to look at the Expo as well to see what special presentations you may want to join.

Once you have your list, do what you can to block time in your calendar and attend live. Attending live is a great way to feel more connected with the other attendees and more a part of Spring Summit as a whole. It’s also great to be able to ask questions during Q&As. Additionally, when we invest our time to go all in we get more out of it. If attending live just isn’t possible, you can always watch the recordings later. To prevent it from becoming part of an I’ll-getto-it-one-day list, schedule your own calendar events for when you’ll watch the sessions.

2 EARN THOSE POINTS!

Check out the Leaderboard Contest and see what you can do to earn points, since the Leaderboard is also a great guide to figuring out how to be active and get the most out of your conference experience. Aim to do at least one thing in each category (e.g. say “hi” to someone, post a topic or comment in the community board, answer a poll, etc.). 3 USE WHAT YOU LEARN.

Spring Summit will be packed with interesting and useful information and resources. Some things will be useful to your business right now and some might be better to revisit down the line. Knowing the difference might be especially tough for anyone new to entrepreneurship. To help you get the most out of Spring Summit for the long term (as well as the short term) make a “now” list and an “in six months” list. As you go through the conference add different topics, resources, books, courses, etc. to one of those two lists. Having a plan for using your newfound knowledge can help to prevent you from feeling overloaded and overwhelmed.

See you at Spring Summit!

We Can’t Wait to See You at Spring Summit!

We hope this program gives you the tools you need to make the most of this year’s Spring Summit. Wherever you are starting from, may it inspire you to take your business to the next level.

Here are a few ideas to keep the energy going after Spring Summit comes to a close:

1 If you were able to make a new connection, or even reconnect with someone you already know, make sure to keep that connection alive by following up.

2 Visit Whova to watch any sessions you weren’t able to attend live. You will have access to the Summit until June 9th, 2023.

3 Download your CPE certificates from the Documents tab in Whova.

4 Fill out surveys for any sessions you attended, plus the survey for the entire Summit. Access these under the Resources tab in Whova. Surveys can still be filled out after March 9th.

5 Plan to attend our fourth annual Spring Summit in 2024!

PRO TIP: Mark your calendar for the Closing Session on Thursday, March 9th at 6:00 pm EST. Not only will we choose the winner for our Survey Contest, but we will also share tips for staying motivated and accountable after the Summit ends.
