Riders against suicide...From Pag 1.

The rumble of more than 250 Harley Davidsons, road and dirt bikes could be heard in Mount Morgan on Saturday, 13 May 2023 as over 300 riders in the annual Ride4Lives pulled into the historic Mount Morgan Railway Museum for morning tea.

The annual event is held to create awareness of and reduce judgment around suicide.

Mount Morgan’s Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association catered for the riders with a range of fruit, cakes, slices and sandwiches.

Ride4Lives President, Mr Mark Brookes said he was overwhelmed with the response received for the annual event.

“Online registrations have increased from previous

years and the number of riders who turned up on the day was marvellous,” he said.

This year there was a road route and an adventure route with both groups of riders travelling a combined kilometre total of over 1000 km.

Mark said all riders were amazed at the Mount Morgan Railway Complex, many of who have promised to return and look at the centre in the future.

“It truly is a hidden gem,” Mark said.

The riders travelled from Gladstone to Mount Morgan, then on to Biloela and finished at the Ubobo Discovery Centre where entertainment for the evening - Sand, Ethereal, Big Treble and 8-Ball Aiken - went late into the night. After an overnight camp, the travellers headed for home, just ahead of the rain.

LORIKEETS BUILD MOMENTUM

CROSS COUNTRY REPS

Mount Morgan’s Rugby Union team, the Lorikeets are starting to build momentum in the 2023 Reserve Grade season.

In their third game of the season, Mount Morgan almost claimed victory, but in the end had to settle for a 26-all draw against Capricorn Coast on Saturday, 13 May at Newman Oval.

Despite leading into the break and running in a couple of quick tries early in the second half, they were soon put on the defensive in the last 20 minutes of the game with Capricorn Coast exerting some extra energy after a player was sent off for 10 minutes.

The four tries for Mount Morgan were John Anderson-Ross, Connor Stewart, William Hayden and Josh McDougall, while conversions were made by John Anderson-Ross, Connor Stewart and Tyler Toby.

This was the Lorikeets’ third game of the season with Mount Morgan playing Drovers at Frenchville (defeated 7 - 38), while the second game was against Frenchville at Mount Morgan (defeated 22-38).

The next game will be on Saturday, 20 May at Newman Oval.

OPENING DOORS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Each May, the Queensland Police Service, White Ribbon Foundation and other Government and Community Support agencies raise community awareness for domestic violence.

The theme for 2023 is ‘It’s in our control to end coercive control’. The hashtags for social media use are #endDFV, #endcoercivecontrol and #DFVPM2023.

Mount Morgan Police Officer in Charge, Sergeant Christopher Cronin was recently invited to Brisbane to talk with the Domestic Violence Command regarding his approach to domestic violence in Mount Morgan.

Sgt Cronin was a guest participant in a podcast ‘Behind the doors’, discussing the challenges and obstacles provided when investigating domestic violence and highlighted some recent success stories from Mount Morgan.

“Considering that at the time of trauma, a victim survivor is not likely to be thinking straight, or be able to communicate effectively, or provide details for assistance to their needs,” he said.

Sgt Cronin said Mount Morgan police had designed a trauma informed approach to engage with victims and perpetrators of violence.

Mount Morgan police have ongoing support and engagement with community safety groups such as Mount Morgan Branch of the QCWA, DVSafePhone.

Org, Act for Kids (Rockhampton) and Helem Yumba CQ have provided quality outcomes for persons escaping domestic violence.

In terms of results, in the beginning of 2023, Mount Morgan police commenced criminal proceedings and secured positive court outcomes against 20 offenders for 61 domestic violence offences.

There have since been more offenders arrested, however these matters are before the court.

“An awkward conversation is better than no conversation,” Sergeant Cronin said.

“Considering our small community, we absolutely do have an overrepresented rate of domestic violence offending, a trend that can only be solved together as a community, by talking about it and getting the support required to people in need,” he said.

It is known that on average one woman is murdered every week, and one man is murdered every month as a result of domestic violence.

Without the engagement of other agencies, and support from non-government organisations these significant positive outcomes would not have been possible.

Behind the Doors of Domestic Violence, is available for streaming on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Sugar City Pioneers are Sweet on Mount Morgan

The Sugar City Pioneers, the Mackay branch of the Australian Caravan Club, will hold a five day muster in Mount Morgan from Friday,9 June to Wednesday, 14 June 2023, with some 21 caravans/motor homes booked in at the Silver Wattle Caravan Park with Dave and Debi.

The muster organisers, Frank and Leonie Casey had suggested to the branch to conduct the muster in Mount Morgan prior to the start of Covid.

Covid put this on hold like many other activities across the nation. Plans are well and truly under way for activities during the muster with a focus on enticing members to walk in and support the local businesses.

“Mount Morgan is steeped in history and character along with

the fact that residents, businesses, and volunteers are so friendly and helpful. That is why Leonie and I picked the town for a muster,” Frank said.

The Australian Caravan Club is a club for all Recreational Vehicle owners and users and was formed in 2006. The ACC currently has 45 branches across Australia that create a great social environment for their members and have regular musters (social events or trips held in various locations).

The Australian Caravan Club has a number of special interest groups within the club such as, Lone Trekkers (for solo travellers), F.T.T (full time travellers), Armed Forces personnel, Evernew owners group, Jeep owners. These special interest groups are in addition to the branches.

Frank and Leonie recently spent six days in Mount Morgan to plan for the June muster and attended the 2023 Golden Mount Festival.

“It was a great festival and credit should be given to all those involved in creating a wonderful festival and procession,” Leonie and Frank said.

“Debi and Dave’s hospitality and assistance/guidance during the week was greatly appreciated,” Leonie and Frank said.

“You won’t miss members of the club as they should be wearing their green and gold shirts or ACC name tags.”

All 40 members attending have expressed excitement for this muster and are looking forward to the hospitality of Mount Morgan,” Frank said.

MIRANI MESSAGE

With Stephen Andrew, MP

On the May long weekend, I left Mackay and travelled to the southern end of the Mirani electorate to attend several community events and meet with business owners, farmers and constituents.

The day started at Carmila State School celebrating 100 years of ‘Education for life’. This was of particular significance due to a long family history in the region with my grandfather who ran the Cob and Co station that was located directly opposite where the school is located today. He also ran supplies and goods to other areas by bullock train to Nebo and back to Carmila.

It is with great pleasure that I congratulated the teachers, staff and students, past and present from Carmila State School on achieving 100 years of service in the local community.

Continuing on my journey, arriving at the Caves and District Progress and Agricultural Society show. It was evident that the children from The Caves and Milman state schools showcased their talent with artwork proudly. Many conversations on the direction of the State government with locals were all too familiar. The evening went out with a bang with the best fifteen-minute fireworks I’ve seen in a long time. It was absolutely sensational.

I went and checked on the Mount Morgan pipeline progress and Rookwood Weir; calling into the regional localities in my electorate like Bouldercombe, Gogango, Westwood, Marmor and many others.

Arriving in Mount Morgan early on Sunday morning

I first had breakfast with the crew from the Golden Mount Festival Association at the Big Dam. The members had been busy weekend with the Friday night and Saturday events.

If you attended Dam 7 Sunday morning you would have thoroughly enjoyed the hearty breakfast as I did. The Golden Mount Festival Association delivered again.

I was fortunate enough to chat with many of the locals and after breakfast took some time out for a couple of hours at the Mount Morgan shooting range.

On Sunday afternoon, I called into the Mount Morgan Rodeo. It’s hard to enter a rodeo and not find something to smile about. I love that it’s still embraced by our community and I am grateful for the conversations. Mount Morgan definitely is a town of pride, true friendships and values.

It was a very exciting time in history, collecting the keys for the office soon to be opened in Mount Morgan. I spoke to many locals out and about regarding their expectations. There was talk about fundraising opportunities and community dances so stay tuned. It was very humbling to receive such

positive responses from the locals regarding my plan to be physically present in the southern end of the electorate.

The official opening date is still to be confirmed as some work will need to be done to the space. If you are interested in working in a part-time administrative capacity, I encourage you to submit an expression of interest and attach a copy of your resume and send to Mirani@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Monday saw me travel via the backroads through Ridgeland to the Fitzroy Crossing, Morinish and surrounds. It was surprising to see that these roads were in better shape than the Bruce Highway. I was welcomed by many local farmers on the way who were keen to share their highs and lows with me. I may have also gotten my fix, tasting some locally grown Rosellas along the way.

From chatting with the locals in Marlborough, stopping in at Ogmore, St Lawrence, Clairview and Flaggy Rock to discuss issues with more of the Mirani constituents. It was a privilege to also deliver Queensland flags to some of the local schools in these areas. The highlight of my day was meeting Kenneth Rowlands (pictured below) at Kalapa. It’s not too often you get to meet a centenarian. I am proud to serve Kenneth and all my constituents in the Mirani electorate.

CALLIUNGAL RURAL FIRE BRIGADE SPRINGS INTO ACTION IN 2023

It has been a busy start to 2023 for the members of Calliungal Rural Fire Brigade based at Mount Morgan. As well as fighting a number of grass fires, there is work upgrading the rural fire station, training, out of area deployment and preparing for the cool burn season.

The Calliungal Rural Fire Service (RFS) Brigade has 22 volunteer members who operate two fire appliances and provides rural fire fighting services for 470 sq km of the rugged heavily vegetated hilly rural areas surrounding Mount Morgan, north from the top of the Range and south to the border of Banana Shire.

With the weather becoming dryer in the last couple of months, there have been a number of major and minor grass fires around the Mount Morgan area. The largest was south of Mount Morgan, on the Burnett Highway near Oakey Creek. With tinder dry grass, the fire ended up on both sides of the Highway, with smoke closing it for a while. It took eight rural and urban fire trucks and teams to put out the fire, which burnt over two days. There have also been many smaller fires popping up over the district, which serve as a warning for people to take care with small burns that can get out of control easily, given the dry conditions.

Over the last couple of years, the Brigade facility has been upgraded from a single shed accommodating two fire appliances to a Rural Fire Station containing a vehicle storage shed and a station building with office space, a kitchen and a training and incident management area. The upgrade process is ongoing,

with more work being undertaken to improve the operational capability of the Station to meet the increasing demands to ensure community safety.

Brigade members have been busy with training and operational duties. Training is an important part of being a RFS volunteer. Firefighting is a hazardous job and there are many risks involved in protecting the community against fire. As people join as volunteers, they learn about the RFS and are taught skills needed to fight fires, look after team members and can train to progress into leadership and other roles within the Service.

The initial focus for training is to preparing volunteers to qualified as firefighters in the brigade, enabling them to work on fire-grounds. Training includes an initial firefighting course emphasising safety, using firefighting equipment and firefighting skills In addition, much of the RFS training assists people in their everyday life. As an example of this, six Calliungal RFS volunteers recently completed First Aid Certificate training, which is useful both on the fireground and in general life.

Calliungal members not only fight fires locally, but can deploy all across Queensland and even interstate. Keven Coughran, the Brigade First Officer, recently deployed to the Miles fires as a Sector Controller, managing a number of teams fighting fires across a wide front and helping to protect the communities in the area. The Calliungal Brigade is always on the lookout for new members who are interested in helping their local community and gaining new skills. If you are interested in knowing more or helping, please contact the First Officer Kevin Coughran on 0428 678 096.

On Tuesday, 2 May the Mount Morgan State High School senior boys’ basketball team played Emmaus College in the first home game in a while.

The boys came out strong as Zayveon led the boys for the first half making a few threes and fastbreaks to keep the team up.

Travis and Kyran kept the Emmaus boys on their toes with a few steals and lockdown defence on their side of the court.

Oatesy had a riveting afternoon stirring the boys up and ensuring the game did not get too far away from them.

In the second half, the boys slowed down and started scoring fewer points letting the Emmaus boys get ahead by ten points, but overall kept their heart in the game.

Overall, the boys had a great game and played the best they could. Final score was 54-44 Emmaus total.
