Hello and welcome to our final issue of the year for 2024! What a year it’s been!

We are truly honoured to have the incredible Lance Liufau as our guest editor for this edition. Lance is a name synonymous with the barbering industry, a man of many talents! As a barber, educator, and co-owner of The Loft Barbershop, Lance has continually pushed the boundaries of excellence. You’ll also recognise him as a familiar voice here at Barbershop Magazine, where he’s been a valued contributor and blog writer for quite some time.

I’m immensely grateful for Lance’s contribution to this issue. His insight, passion, and expertise shine through in the articles he’s written, and I know you’ll find them just as inspiring and engaging as I did.

In this issue, we also celebrate the 2024 AMBAs, which took place a few weeks ago at the iconic Tivoli in Brisbane. It was an unforgettable evening, showcasing the best of the barbering industry and bringing together talent from across the country.

Additionally, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about our rebrand! Starting in 2025, Barbershop Magazine will evolve into Mocha Barber, aligning seamlessly with the Mocha Group brand. This shift reflects our vision of unity across our publications, which will also include Mocha Hair and Mocha Beauty. We can’t wait for you to see what’s ahead!

With all this and so much more packed into these pages, it’s time for me to hand the reins over to none other than Mr. Lance Liufau, our guest editor, as he shares his thoughts with you, our readers.

As we close out 2024, I want to thank you for your support throughout the year. Wishing you a safe and festive season, and I hope you get some time to just switch off, soak up the surroundings and get some well-deserved R&R.

GUEST EDITOR LANCE LIUFAU

Welcome to this issue of our Barbershop Magazine, where we explore the beauty and power of learning and the transformative impact of staying teachable. In an industry that’s constantly evolving—whether in style, technique, or client expectations—being a barber is more than just mastering your tools. It’s about continuously striving to be better, staying open to new ideas, and never losing the drive to learn.

Every barber knows the satisfaction of achieving a sharp fade or a clean line. But the most successful among us understand that our skills are never “finished.” Remaining teachable isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength. It means you’re always open to refining your craft and willing to adapt to new trends and techniques. It’s the humility to acknowledge that there’s always more to learn, whether from a seasoned mentor or a young, ambitious apprentice.

Being teachable is a commitment to the art itself. It builds confidence, enhances creativity, and keeps us connected with our clients in meaningful ways. When we’re eager to learn, our clients notice—they can feel our passion, our drive, and our dedication to giving them the best experience possible. A teachable barber doesn’t just cut hair; they inspire trust and loyalty.

As the guest editor this issue I have tried to bring you some stories of barbers who have transformed their careers by embracing learning, as well as tips to help you stay open and inspired. Let’s celebrate the courage it takes to grow, to adapt, and to keep moving forward in this ever-changing world. Because the best barbers aren’t the ones who know everything; they’re the ones who remain teachable and continue to take on new knowledge.

Like I’ve always said, “Never stop learning, stay on your grind & keep it TopShelf.”

Can’t tell you how much easier the Sirius has my debulking work. No snags on thick hair.

Breaking the Cycle THE BARBER BEHIND THE MOVEMENT

Starting in a garden shed in Christchurch, New Zealand, a revolution began. It wasn’t loud or flashy, but its impact has been felt worldwide.

The revolutionaries? Matt Brown and his wife Sarah Brown, a husbandand-wife duo who turned their personal pain into a powerful movement to combat domestic violence and support survivors of abuse. Their brainchild, She Is Not Your Rehab, is more than a slogan; it’s a global call to action to heal from the wounds of the past and create a better future.

FROM CLIPPERS TO A CAUSE

Matt Brown’s journey began behind the barber’s chair. Growing up in Christchurch, he experienced a childhood marred by abuse and trauma. Those early experiences could have derailed his life, but instead, they became the foundation for his mission. When Matt picked up his first pair of clippers, it wasn’t just a career choice—it was a lifeline.

Barbering, often seen as a trade, became a profound form of therapy. As Matt worked on his clients’ hair, he noticed something remarkable happening. The barbershop, with its hum of conversation and relaxed atmosphere, became a sanctuary for men to open up. The chair became a confession booth, where men who had never spoken about their pain or trauma before felt safe to share their stories.

This realisation became the cornerstone of Matt’s advocacy. He saw that many men carried deep wounds from their past, wounds that often manifested as anger, violence, or silence. “Hurt people hurt people,” Matt says. But this also works in reverse as healed people heal people.

THE BIRTH OF SHE IS NOT YOUR REHAB

Together with his wife, Sarah, Matt launched She Is Not Your Rehab. The movement was born out of their shared vision to break the cycle

of intergenerational violence and trauma. The message is simple but profound: women are not rehabilitation centres for broken men. Healing is a personal responsibility, not something to be offloaded onto a partner.

The movement gained traction through Matt’s work in his barbershop, where he fostered an environment of vulnerability and healing. His clients began to see their weekly haircuts as more than grooming—they became opportunities for reflection and growth.

In 2021, Matt and Sarah encapsulated their message in a book titled She Is Not Your Rehab. The book interweaves Matt’s own story with stories from other men who have faced and overcome their traumas. It’s a raw and unflinching look at the damage caused by unresolved pain, but it’s also a beacon of hope for those ready to take accountability for their healing.

SPREADING THE MESSAGE GLOBALLY

The impact of She Is Not Your Rehab quickly extended beyond the walls of Matt’s barbershop. Matt and Sarah began traveling across New Zealand and the world, sharing their story and spreading their message. They have spoken at schools, prisons, and community centres, inspiring men to confront their pain and break free from cycles of violence.

In addition to public speaking, the Browns have harnessed technology to broaden their reach. They launched the InnerBoy app, a digital resource designed to help men explore their emotions and begin their healing journeys. Initially released in New Zealand, the app has now expanded to Australia, providing tools and support to thousands of men seeking to better themselves.

“The idea behind InnerBoy is simple,” Matt explains. “It’s about helping men reconnect with their inner child—the boy who was hurt, ignored, or abused. Healing starts there.”

FROM CHRISTCHURCH TO THE WORLD

Matt’s work has taken him across continents, but his mission remains deeply personal. “Every time I share my story, I think of the boy I was and the man I could have become if someone had shown me another way,” he says.

In Australia, Matt’s message has resonated strongly. His workshops and speaking engagements have been met with overwhelming support. “The response has been humbling,” Sarah adds. “It shows us that this isn’t just a New Zealand issue—it’s a global issue.”

Matt’s ability to connect with men from all walks of life has been key to the movement’s success. Whether he’s speaking to a room of corporate executives or a group of incarcerated men, his authenticity and vulnerability break down barriers.

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP

At the heart of She Is Not Your Rehab is the partnership between Matt and Sarah. Their shared commitment to the cause has been a driving force behind the movement’s success. “Sarah is the backbone of everything we do,” Matt says. “She’s not just my wife; she’s my partner in every sense of the word.”

Sarah’s role in the movement extends far beyond logistical support. As a co-author of the book and a passionate advocate for survivors of abuse, she has been instrumental in shaping the message and mission of She Is Not Your Rehab.

The couple’s work is a testament to the power of unity and shared purpose. Together, they have shown that healing is not only possible—it’s transformative.

RAISING A NEW GENERATION OF GOOD MEN

One of the movement’s core goals is to raise a generation of men who are emotionally intelligent, accountable, and compassionate. “We want to show boys and men that strength isn’t about suppressing your emotions or exerting power over others,” Matt says. “True strength is being vulnerable, taking responsibility, and choosing to heal.”

Through their work, the Browns are creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the individuals they help. By encouraging men to heal, they are also breaking cycles of violence and abuse, creating safer and healthier communities for everyone.

LOOKING AHEAD

As She Is Not Your Rehab continues to grow, Matt and Sarah remain focused on their mission. They are exploring ways to expand the reach of the InnerBoy app and are working on new projects to further their advocacy.

“We’re just getting started,” Sarah says. “There’s so much more we want to do.”

Matt, too, is energised by the momentum of the movement. “This isn’t about us—it’s about the message,” he says. “If we can help even one person take the first step toward healing, then it’s all worth it.”

Matt Brown’s story is one of transformation. From a boy scarred by trauma to a man leading a global movement, his journey is proof that it’s never too late to heal. Through She Is Not Your Rehab, Matt and Sarah are not only changing lives—they’re changing legacies.

In the humble surroundings of ‘My Fathers Barbershop’ in Christchurch, Matt found his calling. Today, his work is a testament to the power of vulnerability, accountability, and love. His message is clear: healing starts with you, but its impact can change the world.

the diligents way

Diligents is the manifestation of Tom Hoffman’s lifelong barbershop dream. With his entrepreneurial spirit extending beyond the usual small business owner ambitions, Tom is already making waves, just one year in.

Fuelled by a desire to create a dynamic space that embraces innovation and versatility, Tom offers more than exceptional male grooming. Through Diligents, he brings a holistic approach to well-being, shaping a place where style meets substance. We met with Tom to find out about this new movement in hairdressing for men.

Tom was introduced to the world of hairdressing as a client at first. “When I was 14, my mum used to take me to get my hair cut at Toni & Guy,” he recalls. “I became close friends with my Stylist there and used to go in with lots of ideas. He could see I was interested in hair and asked if I’d like to become a hairdresser. Back then, you could do a couple of hours a week, so I started with that. Then when I turned 16, I started working there all day on a Saturday. After that, I went into full time hairdressing and stayed with Toni & Guy on and off for roughly 14 years.”

In his early days as a Stylist, Tom seized all the creative opportunities that came his way. “I discovered my love of styling early on and began assisting at fashion shows.” Vivienne Westwood and London Fashion Week are just two of the stellar names that Tom drops into conversation.

But this was just the beginning for Tom. Determined to carve his own path, he decided to make the transition into the world of barbering. “There came a point when I was quite keen to work in a different environment and have a change. I was always cutting hair in school and styling all the guys’ hair, so I knew I’d enjoy barbering,” explains Tom. “Also, Kevin Luchmun was a big influence in men’s hair. He did the Ricki Hall shoot which became quite iconic. It made a huge impact on me and pushed me to do what I do today.”

“I HAVEN’T EVEN SCRATCHED THE SURFACE OF WHAT I WANT TO ACHIEVE YET. I TRULY LOVE WHAT I DO, AND I KNOW THIS: I WILL NEVER LEAVE THE CHAIR . EVER, THAT’S JUST THE DILIGENTS WAY.”

“Next, I moved to a small high street barbers and managed it with a friend for about 7 years. The brand had around 30 shops in total, and we were the busiest, but I didn’t feel valued.” He continues, “That’s when I started coming up with a vision for what I have now. I felt there was a gap in the market for men’s salons, especially here in Guildford.” It was about this time that Diligents was born.

“Diligents is a sanctuary exclusively for men, a place where they can feel at ease while they have their haircuts and treatments,” Tom shares. “I truly believe in the power of manifestation, and I’ve made this dream a reality.”

But his journey wasn’t without challenges. Tom reflects on his past struggles, admitting, “Before Diligents, I was stuck in a rut. But I took the plunge and bet on myself.” He believes that overcoming personal demons can unlock the drive and talent needed to succeed. “Many walk away thinking it’s too hard or takes too long, but if you truly believe in your vision, you can reach your goals.”

Despite the allure of offers from well-known companies eager to invest, Tom remained steadfast. “When I would share my ideas, many people were interested but saw it as just another high street salon. I aimed to create a movement and wanted to keep control of my brand,” he asserts with conviction.

Tom also knew the importance of having the right partner. “I’ve seen too many hairdressers take on their own salons without a clue of the business aspect, leading to their downfall. You must understand yourself, choose the right business partner, and build the right team to bring your dream to life.

Since opening its doors, Diligents continues to grow in popularity. “We’ve hit the ground running in a crazy, crazy way. We’ve been open a year and we’re fully booked every single day. I had my first client at 6:15 this morning and I still can’t fit them all in. We turn away up to 20 people a day: it’s nuts. I started off with myself and 3 lads, and we’re in the process of taking on 2 more, so we’ll have 6 chairs,” Tom explains.

In his quest to make Diligents the ultimate destination for men’s hairdressing and well-being, Tom has found Depot, a high-end men’s hair and body care brand, to use in the shop. “Depot is an incredible brand from Italy, offering around 80 different products that cover all my needs—from hair and shaving to beard and body care,” he says. “I wanted to avoid sourcing from multiple places, and Depot fits the bill perfectly.”

Tom’s journey with Depot hasn’t just been transactional; it’s been built on a strong partnership. “I discovered them myself and spent about 18 months negotiating to cultivate the best relationship possible. They’re a fantastic brand and treat us exceptionally well.”

His efforts have paid off significantly. “In the short time we’ve collaborated, I’ve become an ambassador and a global educator for Depot. They even featured me and my shop in a write-up, and we created a brilliant photoshoot together,” he shares, beaming with pride.

The facial treatments from Depot have become a popular service with Diligents’ clients.

The facials are rooted in the Depot brand’s expertise. “We learn the rituals stepby-step from Depot, and we perform them right here in the shop. They’ve gained immense popularity,” Tom notes. “It’s amazing to see even the big, tough guys come in asking for them. There I am, giving a facial to these ‘big brute lads’,” he laughs. Tom observes the transformation as they settle in. “You can see them take a deep breath; it’s a different atmosphere. They’re not in a typical salon or spa where they might feel self-conscious. I want men to feel safe and comfortable here, so they can enjoy a facial without the fear of being judged.”

“DILIGENTS IS A SANCTUARY EXCLUSIVELY FOR MEN, A PLACE WHERE THEY CAN FEEL AT EASE WHILE THEY HAVE THEIR HAIRCUTS AND TREATMENTS, I TRULY BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF MANIFESTATION , AND I’VE MADE THIS DREAM A REALITY.”

It’s clear that Diligents is redefining the essence of barbering, bringing it back to its roots while infusing a modern flair. “It’s about creating a space where someone can have those meaningful conversations in a fresh, contemporary way,” Tom explains.

He reflects on the typical barbershop scene. “In my view, many barbershops have leaned heavily into tradition—lots of wood and clutter, without much uniqueness,” he critiques. “I’m not a fan of that aesthetic. It’s a bit washed. I’ve purposely gone for a clean, sharp, and minimal look.”

The atmosphere at Diligents speaks volumes. “We’ve cultivated this cool vibe where clients can feel completely at ease,” Tom shares. “While we perform most of the same services traditional barbers offer, our approach is distinctly different. It’s the Diligents way.”

Tom envisions a holistic approach for his shop, unifying various services under one roof. He is currently exploring innovative ideas in collaboration with mental health companies and physiotherapists and is contemplating the addition of treatment rooms to accommodate these services.

The shop is already home to an aesthetics doctor who makes regular visits, and the team is excited about the possibilities of enhancing these offerings even further. The goal is clear: to create a nurturing environment that addresses both physical and mental well-being, making Diligents a true sanctuary for its clients.

“Another exciting experience we’ve created is connecting celebrities with their fans through our hot seat competition.” Tom continues, “Each month, a different celebrity visits for a face-to-face chat with one of their biggest admirers. For example, when rugby star Marcus Smith stopped by, he not only signed a pair of boots but also took time to interact with fans, creating unforgettable memories.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome a diverse lineup of athletes, from footballers and rugby players to hockey stars and golfers. Looking ahead, we’re eager to reach out to boxers and others in the sporting community,” Tom adds. “Many of these celebrities are clients themselves, and their enthusiasm makes for a great experience for everyone involved. It’s also excellent for our social media and gives our audience a taste of what we’re about.”

So, what does the future hold for Tom and Diligents? “What I’ve accomplished in the last year feels almost surreal. From opening our doors to traveling around the world and spending time educating in Italy with Depot, it’s all been amazing,” he shares thoughtfully.

Tom emphasises the importance of a comprehensive teaching approach, stating, “We need to cover salon etiquette, communication skills, and the nuances of interacting with clients.” It’s clear that he’s not just dedicated to styling hair, but to shaping the next generation of barbers with holistic education. With this commitment, the opportunities ahead are vast. “I’m currently mapping out the structure for my new course and I’ll have students flying in to be taught in my shop in a few months! I’m excited for what’s to come in every area,” he adds.

“I haven’t even scratched the surface of what I want to achieve yet. I truly love what I do, and I know this: I will never leave the chair. Ever,” Tom says. That’s just The Diligents Way.

For metal hair trimmers, clippers and implements. Why use three different products when one easy to use, economical and proven product will meet all of your needs.

FrOm the Streets tO the Stage:

DAMON TUA’S JOURNEY TO BARBERING EXCELLENCE

In a world where paths often diverge in unexpected ways, Damon Tua, also known as “The Chief Cuts” on Instagram, has walked a remarkable road. Hailing from the rugged environments, Damon’s life has been a testament to perseverance, creativity, and selfdiscovery.

What began as a journey of survival in a challenging environment has blossomed into a thriving career in barbering—a profession he has grown to love deeply. His recent accolade as a finalist in the 2024 Australian Modern Barber Awards is a culmination of years of hard work, resilience, and a passion for both his craft and his community.

A SANCTUARY IN SOUND

Damon grew up in tough neighbourhoods where opportunities were scarce, and the pull of negative influences was constant. For many young people in his community, the streets offered a sense of belonging, but Damon sought solace elsewhere: in music. Music was an escape, and also chance for Damon to show his creativity. It gave him a way to express what he was feeling, and to tune out the chaos around him.

RISING THROUGH THE RANKS

Music wasn’t just a pastime for Damon—it became a sanctuary. He spent hours immersing himself in different genres, from hip-hop to soul, finding inspiration in the rhythm and lyrics. It was here that he first learned the importance of discipline and dedication. It showed him how to find beauty even in the roughest places.”

A NEW PATH: DISCOVERING BARBERING

While music provided an emotional outlet, Damon’s professional journey began to take shape in an unexpected place: a barbershop. At first, he viewed it as just another job—a way to make ends meet. But as time went on, something began to shift.

Damon was able to see how much more barbering was than just cutting hair. It was about connection. People would come in for a cut, but they’d leave with confidence, with stories shared, with a sense of community.

This realisation sparked a curiosity in Damon that quickly turned into a passion. He began to learn the craft, studying techniques, experimenting with styles, and absorbing everything he could about the art of barbering. The barbershop became his new sanctuary—a space where creativity and culture converged, much like the music he had always loved.

Damon’s journey through the barbering world was anything but linear. He worked in various barbershops, each with its own atmosphere and clientele, and each taught him something new. Every shop was like a chapter in his story, with different environments came new challenges and also new lessons.

In those early years, Damon faced his share of challenges. As someone from a rough background, he often felt the weight of judgment and stereotypes. But he let his work speak for itself, pouring his energy into perfecting his craft. His natural talent and relentless drive began to set him apart.

Damon’s unique blend of technical skill and artistic vision caught the attention of clients and colleagues alike. He developed a reputation not just for his sharp fades and intricate designs but also for his ability to make every client feel valued. Barbering is personal and that’s exactly how Damon treats it. It’s not just about how someone looks when they leave the chair—it’s about how they feel.

THE CHIEF CUTS: BUILDING A BRAND

As his skills grew, so did his ambitions. Damon began branding himself as “The Chief Cuts,” a nod to his leadership in the barbershop and his cultural roots. Through social media, he started sharing his work, showcasing his unique style and the transformative power of a great haircut.

Damon didn’t just use social media to promote his work—he used it to tell his story. He has shared many different styles of content like pro tips, tool knowledge and his journey into barbering, inspiring others to chase their dreams no matter where they start. He also wanted people to see that you don’t have to be defined by where you come from. You can create your own path.

A CAREER MILESTONE: THE AUSTRALIAN MODERN BARBER AWARDS

In 2024, Damon’s hard work and dedication were recognised on a national level when he was named a finalist in the Australian Modern Barber Awards. The nomination was a surreal moment for Damon, who never imagined that his passion for barbering would take him this far.

“To be a finalist among so many talented barbers is an honour,” Damon shares. “It’s not just about me— it’s about representing everyone who’s been told they can’t make it.”

The awards celebrate the best in the industry, highlighting innovation, creativity, and excellence. For Damon, the recognition is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the transformative power of barbering.

LOOKING AHEAD

As he reflects on his journey, Damon remains grounded and focused on the future. He has had dreams of opening his own barbershop—one that’s not just a place for haircuts but a hub for community and creativity. And in 2024 that dream has become a reality as Damon has teamed up with his church group and has created a space, called Rivers Barbershop.

Damon also works hard to help to inspire young barbers, through various opportunities such as becoming part of the Gamma+ Education team. “If I can inspire one person to chase their dreams, to believe in themselves, then it’s all worth it,” he says.

From humble beginnings to the heights of industry recognition, Damon Tua’s journey is a story of resilience, passion, and transformation. Through music, he found solace; through barbering, he found purpose. And as “The Chief Cuts,” he has not only mastered his craft but also inspired others to see the beauty in their own journeys.

With his sights set on even greater heights, there’s no doubt that Damon’s story is far from over. As he continues to make his mark on the barbering world, he reminds us all that no matter where we start, it’s where we’re headed that truly defines us.

AMERICAN CREW COLLABORATES WITH WREXHAM A.F.C. STARS FOR GROOMING AND STYLE PARTNERSHIP

Renowned men’s grooming brand American Crew has announced an exciting collaboration with the globally recognized Wrexham A.F.C., a Welsh football club propelled to stardom through the hit TV series Welcome to Wrexham. The partnership features three of the club’s standout players—Ollie Palmer, Jordan Davies, and Paul Mullin—who travelled to the United States in July 2024 for a series of friendly matches in Santa Barbara and Santa Clara, California. The club gained international acclaim after being purchased in 2021 by Hollywood icons Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, turning its players into cultural icons. Each player has shared their favourite American Crew products, showcasing their grooming routines both on and off the field. Ollie Palmer highlights the Matte Clay for its ease and versatility, alongside the Ginger + Tea Body Wash, Shampoo, and Conditioner as his essential travel companions. He also swears by the Beard Serum as his top grooming staple. Paul Mullin prefers the Fiber for its long-lasting hold during his active football days and loves the 3-IN-1 Body Wash, Shampoo, and Conditioner in Tea Tree for travel. Jordan Davies, on the other hand, favours the Defining Paste for added definition and opts for the Chamomile + Pine 3-IN-1 product for its soothing, calming scent.

Mark Rabone, an American Crew All-Star and educator, as well as the owner of Esquire Male Grooming in Brisbane, has provided professional insights into the players’ signature looks. Ollie’s short-textured quiff showcases volume and height, Jordan’s trending textured Caesar cut emphasises a modern aesthetic, and Paul’s classic short combover offers a timeless, practical style—all crafted with their favourite American Crew products. This collaboration not only highlights the growing intersection of sports and grooming but also underscores American Crew’s dedication to staying attuned to global style trends and consumer interests.

Jacqueline Mandaro, General Manager of American Crew, expressed her excitement about the partnership: “We’re thrilled to partner with such extraordinarily talented players who make an impact on and off the pitch,” “Men’s grooming and style continues to evolve, becoming more and more present in culture, trends and sports. Partnerships like this one with Ollie, Jordan and Paul help solidify American Crew as a leader in professional hair care, but also as a destination for meaningful engagement and inspiration.”

Forward Ollie Palmer shared his thoughts on the collaboration:

“American Crew has become a key part of my daily routine, helping me refine my personal style. As we embark on our U.S. tour, it’s crucial for me to feel confident while representing my team. American Crew equips me with the tools I need to achieve that. I’m excited to share my grooming journey with the wider football community and highlight how style and confidence are deeply connected.”

The partnership was also celebrated during the Wrexham match in Santa Clara on July 24, where American Crew supported the team from the stands. ESQUIRE MALE GROOMING CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS

Esquire Male Grooming has marked a monumental milestone – 20 years in business. The event was a celebration of dedication, craftsmanship, and community, held at their Milton barbershop. Owner Mark Rabone, along with his team, welcomed clients, friends, family, and industry peers to join the festivities.

Editor-in-Chief of Mocha Group, Louise May, and General Manager, Jarred Stedman, were honoured to attend and be part of the celebration. It was an intimate evening with an electric atmosphere created by great food and drinks, lively conversations, and a DJ spinning great tunes. It was a true testament to the close-knit community Esquire Male Grooming has cultivated over two decades.

Reflecting on the journey, Mark Rabone shared heartfelt words on the night, “The 20 years have been a hell of a ride,” he said. “I could not have achieved what we have without the incredible people around me, my beautiful family, my amazing team, past team members, our suppliers, and, of course, our clients. Without them, Esquire would not be where it is today.”

Mark’s passion for the industry shone through as he spoke of his love for the craft. “This is one of the best industries in the world. It’s hard work, but it’s so rewarding.” His words were a powerful reminder of the dedication and heart that has driven Esquire Male Grooming’s success.

WHY BARBERS & STYLISTS LOVE HANZ DE FUKO

The brand’s appeal goes beyond its formulations, with professionals praising its performance and aesthetic charm.

“I love the story behind the brand and the fact that David Alfonso and Christopher Zent have such beautiful packaging, my clients always comment on how nice it looks on the retail shelves. I personally love that it is paraben and sulfate free. It is so important to me to have a more natural product to offer my clients in my salon. I have a lot of male and short hair clients with those cute pixie textured shapes that love hold and texture.

The whole range has become a salon favourite when it comes to styling. We have had great feedback that the product lasts and does what it’s meant to, and the fragrances are nice and subtle.

I love the price as I can offer my clients affordable luxury and I love the cute boxes some of the range comes in, such a nice point of difference. Our alltime favourite has to be Sponge Wax! It’s a wax texture but when you warm it up in your hands it turns into a workable matt paste!”

Anthony Bayer of Anthony Bayer Hair, Auckland, NZ. @anthonybayerhair

“I love to stock and use HANZ DE FUKO products at Uncle Gino’s Barber Shop because they deliver consistent, professional results with the added benefit of natural ingredients. CLAYMATION is a favourite for creating sharp, textured styles with a high hold and matte finish, while GRAVITY PASTE is perfect for sleek, polished looks with a subtle shine.

We also appreciate their shampoo and conditioner, packed with natural ingredients that nourish and strengthen hair, making them ideal for our clients’ everyday care routines. With clean aromas, exceptional performance, and stylish branding, HANZ DE FUKO products perform brilliantly in the barber chair and retail effortlessly.”

AWARDS NIGHT 5 th MAY 2025 GOLD COAST, QLD

IN 2025 THE AMBA WILL BE HELD ON THE LAST NIGHT OF:

EMMA DINON

Emma Dinon has carved her place as a leader in Australian barbering, earning the prestigious title of 2024 AMBA Barber of the Year. Known for her commitment to excellence and her unique approach to the craft, Emma has not only set a new standard for barbering in Darwin but has also showcased how passion and precision can thrive in a remote setting.

Barbershop Editor Louise May chats with Emma about her career-defining moment, the journey that brought her to this achievement, and the philosophies that drive her work.

From building Star Barber into a standout space to tackling challenges like staffing and education in the Northern Territory, Emma’s story is one of determination, innovation, and a deep respect for the craft.

Congratulations on winning the 2024 AMBA Barber of the Year award! How does it feel to achieve this recognition, and what does it mean to you personally and professionally?

Achieving this recognition feels like an accomplishment I never had imagined possible as a young hairdresser, my career has gone by so fast and things are constantly evolving, it has taken a career defining achievement like this for me to actually sit back and appreciate how far I have come and really be proud of myself and my efforts. Of course this doesn’t come without feelings of imposter syndrome. Personally, it is a massive boost in my confidence and belief system in myself as to what I am capable of achieving if I put my mind to it. And professionally this award has given me leverage to really make my mark on the industry and hopefully to explore other avenues within barbering and also to Collab with some of the best in the industry creatively.

Can you tell us about your journey in Barbering and how it all began to where you are today?

I Began my career as a hairdresser at a reputable salon in South Australia where I was able to be a part of many shoots and competitions to quickly develop my skillset. Naturally I was always better with clippers and short haircuts. After I finished my apprenticeship, I moved to Darwin and a few years after that I went into barbering. After about 3 years I had bought my own shop. I have a very competitive streak when it comes to my work, and I have always made it a massive priority to constantly seek education, to ensure my work is of the highest standard. I also have made conscious effort to ensure our work is much more than just skin fades. We specialise in longer, shaggy work (scissor cuts) which I believe sets us apart from most other barbershops. As much as I enjoy cutting hair, what I have loved the most is the opportunity to connect with other humans of all walks of life, and to become a huge part of each other’s lives. We have the privilege of sharing some really important parts of peoples lives (the good and the bad) and this is not lost on me.

You’ve brought modern barbering to Darwin at the highest standard. What inspired you to take this path, and what challenges have you faced in building Star Barber in a remote location like the NT?

This was a natural progression for me. I believe in doing things whole heartedly especially within my workplace, I will do it really well, or I will not do it at all.

So being a in remote area was not going to be a barrier for me when it comes to offering the highest standard of work. On reflection this has worked so well for me as we have captured a very niche market. However, this was not a calculated decision... this is just me operating how I naturally operate. Being in a remote location offers many challenges, staffing, education opportunities, and the ability to easily attend industry events are our main challenges. This just means we have to budget and plan carefully to ensure we can get to at least one thing per year to remain relevant.

Can you tell us about your impeccable customer service and unique experience. Can you share the key elements of the Star Barber experience that set it apart from other barbershops?

Our service is extremely customer focused from beginning to end and each interaction is very purposeful. We have the standard complementary beverages and hot towel finished, but beyond that I am very mindful to make this an extremely pleasant space to be in for people of all ages and all genders, with carefully thought-out playlists, heaps of greenery and small touches like Incense burning and essential oils on the hot towels. Small things like remembering and using people’s names, and remembering details about them to discuss in further appointments, genuinely caring about people, asking open ended questions and showing genuine interest are such easy way to make sure people feel special, heard, and like a part of the star barber community.(many of these skills I learnt in hairdressing and I believe the barbering world could strongly benefit from) I am sure every client that comes into our shop would genuinely believe they are our single most important client.

I believe being a master conversationalist, has been the driving force in my ability to build such a strong clientele.

Shaving is a skill you feel is becoming a lost art. Why do you think this is, and how do you ensure this traditional skill remains an integral part of your services?

Shaving is perhaps a lost art because it is not as glamorous as other aspects of the craft, and perhaps it doesn’t look as good on Instagram. And also, it is an extremely difficult skill to master, and some may not see the value in taking the time to do so. We ensure majority of beard line ups come with a hot towel shave as a point of difference.

Just having shaves on the menu is a great thing for us as most barbers do not have this. We offer facial services that come with shaves, and due to our love for making people feel good and offering a beautiful pampering experience, we LOVE doing this so naturally the people come! We have many weekly shaves which are great clients to have because they keep our books full and with shaving being such a niche skill, it comes with a higher price point, making it an excellent money maker for us!

As both a director and a working barber, how do you balance managing your team, running the shop, and maintaining a fully booked column?

This is the greatest challenge of all for me and a feat I am yet to master, however, to ensure I am able to perform all these rolls to the best of my abilities I am sure to focus on the basics, eating well, getting enough exercise and getting enough sleep. All of these factors are imperative to ensuring I can manage my stress levels and show up to be my best selfevery day, I also believe the key to having work like balance is enforcing strong boundaries with yourself, meaning you consciously give yourself enough rest and downtime, resisting urges to do work on the weekends. You have to enjoy your life, otherwise what’s it all for!

Having a good team is extremely important to ensure this all runs smoothly I do believe in leading by example so I would never expect my team to do things that I am not prepared to do myself.

Education and growth seem central to your philosophy. How do you keep yourself and your team inspired and updated in an ever-evolving industry?

We try and get interstate at least once a year for education, but the internet is full of so many great resources, there really is no excuse for not keeping your skillset up to date. We use education subscription services and even just Instagram to keep ourselves on the ball.

You’ve created a thriving barbershop with impressive client retention and rebooking rates. What strategies or systems do you attribute to this success?

Strong client focused service and intentional interactions all lead to our impressive retention rates .Retention is the single most important thing to me within a business, it is much easier to retain a client, then it is to gain a new one. I have a formula I use for each client interaction that remains from beginning to end with the entire purpose of rebooking. I am very purposeful throughout my whole service to ensure this client will come back to me, we are on their hair journey together so suggestive language regarding their next appointment and even just suggesting a rebooking time as they leave is so simple, yet so effective. And again, making every single person feel special. We are fortunate enough to be in a position of such high demand that people know if they do not rebook they simply will not get in for weeks.

Winning AMBA Barber of the Year is a huge accomplishment. What advice would you give to aspiring barbers looking to achieve similar success in their careers?

Do not let self-limiting beliefs stand in the way of you putting yourself out there. Practise makes perfect and you learn so much every time you set out to do something like this and each time will only be better. If you are

a total beginner, I advise people to follow the KISS rule (keep it simple stupid) so stick to basics and execute perfectly rather than trying to go completely rogue with something and not nailing it.

I also think the KEY to creating a winning collection is having the best team of people around you possible and really refining your mood board, so you are all clear on the goal look you are trying to achieve. Impeccable Preplanning and organisation creates a safe space on the day for you to enter a full creative flow and really have fun with it.

amba honour roll 2024

At the recent AMBA’s, two very special individuals were honoured, much to the delight of the attendees who celebrated with a standing ovation for both!

Editor in Chief announced the recipient of the 2024 AMBA Special Recognition Award as Gareth Philpott, whose journey into the barbering world has been as unique as it has been transformative. A journey marked by resilience, vision, and an unwavering dedication to education and mentorship in the barbering industry.

Imagine a young man whose career began far from barber chairs and clippers—in fitness, business management, and registered training across multiple industries. Now picture that same individual learning to cut hair through YouTube tutorials, finding solace in the craft during one of life’s most challenging times, while his mother faced a critical illness. This was the beginning of an unexpected journey into barbering—a journey that would, in time, redefine barber education for aspiring professionals across Australia.

Gareth’s story embodies grit and innovation, having developed an academy that not only equips students with the technical skills to excel in barbering but also provides them with the confidence to step directly into real-world barbershops.

Together with his mother, he founded a learning institution grounded in excellence and progressive training. His commitment to bridging the gap between theory and practice has not only shaped talented barbers but has set a new benchmark for modern barber training.

Gareth is about to embark on a significant collaboration with 4 Barbers Education, expanding his own Academy’s reach and making its programs more accessible than ever, across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Sydney and at the AMBA, he was recognised as a man whose passion for barbering and education has already been a beacon for so many and will be for years to come.

Kellie Woodhead, mocha group Art Director and MC for the AMBA’s announced the 2024 Hall of Fame Inductee.

Frank Ciccone is a true trailblazer in the barbering and styling world. This remarkable individual has made his mark on every corner of the industry, from sports stars to rock legends, and from the big screen to his loyal clientele.

His impressive roster of sports clients includes icons from tennis, AFL, soccer, and cricket, such as Tim Cahill, alongside teams like Tottenham and Juventus, and the stars of the Socceroos. For the past six years, he’s proudly sponsored Tom De Koning through his affiliation with the Carlton Football Club, while also taking care of the cuts and fades of the Melbourne City soccer team and collaborating with the prestigious Ferrari team at the Australian Grand Prix.

In the world of entertainment, he has worked with music legends such as Slash from Guns N’ Roses and iconic Australian bands like INXS, Powderfinger, Birds of Tokyo, and Wolfmother. He’s even styled Vernon Wells from Mad Max 2 and Commando, as well as the cast of Geordie Shore for nearly a decade.

Beyond his impressive work with celebrities, his commitment to giving back is truly inspiring. He is a proud ambassador for the Polished Man Foundation, has participated in the World’s Greatest Shave, and continually lends his support to both local and international charity events.

Frank is an ambassador for Fiat, further expanding his influence in branding and style and in the world of film and television. His talents were on full display when he starred as the “Bad Barber” in Netflix’s Australian promotion of The Gray Man.

In addition to owning an award-winning salon and barbershop, Frank has created his own men’s styling product and is a sought after ambassador to highly respected brands in professional grooming and in 2021, he earned the prestigious title of International Barber of the Year, and just this year, his salon was named International Salon of the Year 2024.

Congratulations to both Gareth Philpott and Frank Ciccone.

BARBERING, BIKES, AND BIG DREAMS

Anthony Staltari’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a love for the art of barbering. At just 27 years old, Anthony has made a name for himself in the barbering industry, blending skill, creativity, and a drive for excellence.

Growing up in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, his journey began in his garage, where early experiments with his Dad’s clippers sparked a career that has since taken him around the globe.

EARLY AMBITIONS

Even as a teenager, Anthony showed an entrepreneurial streak. At 14, he transformed his family’s garage into a makeshift barber shop, honing his skills on school friends while drawing inspiration from American barbers he followed on social media. His raw talent and growing reputation eventually caught the attention of Barber Boys, where he began an apprenticeship after leaving Rostrevor College in Year 10.

“It was through social media that I was offered an apprenticeship with Barber Boys,” Anthony recalls. “I took every opportunity to learn more.”

A GROWING CAREER

Nearly a decade on, Anthony’s dedication led to an exciting collaboration with Barber Boys founder Don De Sanctis. In November 2023, the pair launched Barber Boys x Anthony at Gepps Cross. The shop offers a combination of appointment-based and walk-in services, catering to all aspects of men’s grooming in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. “This year, my main focus has been on the shop,” Anthony shares. “It’s been incredible to see our vision come to life and to continue building relationships with clients and the community.”

GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Anthony’s skills have taken him far beyond Adelaide. As an ambassador and now Global Educator for Andis Clippers, he has travelled extensively, sharing his expertise and representing the brand. From rural education sessions across Australia to expos in China, the UK, and New Zealand, his passion for barbering has been showcased on an international stage. He’s also competed in New York, trained in Las Vegas and London, and participated in a London photoshoot for awards entries. “The exposure from Andis gave me the confidence to enter competitions and win awards,”

Anthony says. “It’s been amazing to meet and learn from so many talented people around the world.”

A LOVE FOR THE CRAFT

For Anthony, barbering is more than just a profession—it’s an art form. “I love the creative aspect of barbering and the friendships I’ve made, not only with clients but also with so many people in the industry,” he explains. His favourite tools, like the reVITE cordless clippers by Andis and the Salon Edge Stingray scissors, reflect his meticulous attention to detail and cutting style.

LIFE OUTSIDE THE CHAIR

When he’s not at the shop, Anthony’s passion for adventure takes centre stage. He enjoys Muay Thai, tennis, riding dirt bikes, and cruising on his Ducati. A muscle car enthusiast, he’s currently building his own car. Sundays are his downtime, best spent on a ride or enjoying a charcoal BBQ with mates.

“I like a wide range of music, from hip-hop and techno to 90s hits,” he says, showcasing the eclectic tastes that complement his vibrant personality. And when it comes to food and drink, nothing beats a tomahawk steak paired with a good beer or whiskey.

LOOKING AHEAD

In the coming year, Anthony is focused on growing Barber Boys x Anthony and pursuing another creative photoshoot for competition entries. His commitment to perfecting his craft and pushing the boundaries of barbering artistry shows no signs of slowing down.

Anthony Staltari is proof that passion, hard work, and a clear vision can transform dreams into reality. From a teenage barber experimenting in his garage to an internationally recognised educator and business owner, Anthony’s journey inspires others to embrace their craft and push boundaries. As he continues to build his brand, expand his skills, and shape the future of barbering, one thing is clear: Anthony isn’t just cutting hair—he’s carving a legacy.

36TH CHAMBER

WHERE ART MEETS AUTHENTICITY

MAY

Jeremy Ponton AKA last.hairblender is the owner and director of the 36th Chamber in Gunghalin,ACT. Where he has dedicated himself to utilising the space as a vehicle to embody and express his values and purpose.

Beyond barbering, Jeremy brings a deep love of design into everything he does, allowing him to explore and express creativity across various mediums. Whether it’s graphic design, music, hair, interior design, videography, or photography—if it can be designed, he’s all in.

His mission is to encourage true authenticity, not just in how people present themselves but in how they live their lives. He’s passionate about fostering aspiring creatives and providing them with a place where they can belong and grow.

At 36th Chamber, the goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through the door feels seen, heard, and valued. Whether it’s through a haircut, a meaningful conversation, or through one of their events. Recently, Jeremy was also a finalist in the 2024 AMBA’s with his collection, REFLECTION, which explores themes of identity, authenticity, and transformation.

Louise May, Editor of Barbershop Magazine, sits down with Jeremy Ponton to uncover the vision, passion, and purpose behind the 36th Chamber.

Can you share the story behind choosing the name “36th Chamber” for your barbershop?

The name “36th Chamber” was carefully chosen to represent something far greater than just hair. It was important for me to have a name that could stand on its own — something timeless, culturally resonant, and capable of embodying a larger idea, a movement, and a culture. The inspiration stems from the idea of transformation and mastery, as well as the connection to the classic martial arts film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. The film is about the journey of discipline, growth, and becoming a master in your craft, all while creating something that has a meaningful impact on the community.

For me, the name signifies a space where people can not only enhance their appearance, but also tap into a sense of belonging and personal growth. It’s about creating a chamber—a sanctuary—where art, culture, and authenticity thrive together. It’s a representation of a lifestyle, a creative hub, and a testament to the power of individuality and transformation.

How have the influences of “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” and the Wu-Tang Clan shaped your vision for the business?

The “aha” moment came when I reflected on what barbershops meant to me growing up. They were always neutral ground—spaces where it didn’t matter who you were, what school you went to, or who you didn’t see eye-to-eye with. In that space, everyone was welcome, and anything was possible. That sense of inclusivity and connection was the foundation I wanted to build on.

At the end of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, San Te creates the 36th chamber, an entirely new space accessible to those outside the monastery because he believes that no one should be above another. That message deeply resonated with me. My vision for the barbershop was to create a modern “36th chamber,” where everyone—regardless of background—can feel a sense of belonging, transformation, and inspiration.

The Wu-Tang Clan, one of my favourite rap groups, drew their own inspiration from the same film. To me, they represent the power of unique individuals from different walks of life coming together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. That idea of collaboration, individuality, and shared culture aligns perfectly with the environment I aim to cultivate at the shop—a creative hub where diverse talents and personalities can thrive together and build something larger than life.

Jeremy Ponton

Why is fostering self-expression and individuality so important to you and your brand?

Ultimately, I believe fostering individuality isn’t just about personal expression—it’s about creating a ripple effect of inspiration. When people embrace who they are, they empower others to do the same. That’s the kind of culture I want to champion through 36th Chamber. That’s why diversity and uniqueness aren’t just welcomed—they’re vital. From how we interact with clients to the creative projects we take on; everything is designed to honour the individuality of everyone who walks through our doors.

Can you tell us about your Collection for the 2024 AMBA’s and what inspired it?

REFLECTION is deeply personal—it’s a project born from a journey of internal forgiveness and understanding, not only of my own past, present, and future but also of the countless lives I’ve intersected with and those I’ve yet to encounter. At its core, the collection is an exploration of human identity and the intricate layers that make up who we are. We all wear masks—some consciously, others subconsciously—crafted by our experiences and shaped by the environments we navigate. Many of these masks are a response to trauma, survival mechanisms that help us adapt but can also obscure our true selves. The reality is most people go through life without fully acknowledging or reconciling these different personas.

This collection sought to highlight that journey—the tension between our inner and outer selves, the light and dark we all carry, and the reconciliation of these facets to discover authenticity. I believe that only by accepting these masks, whether they are born from joy or pain, can we truly embrace who we are. REFLECTION is not just about seeing ourselves clearly but also about finding peace in the balance of our many sides.

If someone walked into 36th Chamber for the first time, what would you want them to feel or experience?

I always think back to my very first barbershop experience at Canberra’s OG. Roger David, run by Danny “Rambo” Ram. That place wasn’t just a barbershop—it was a vibe, a memory etched into my soul. There will never be another place quite like it, but it left its lasting impression on me, one that shaped my vision for 36th Chamber.

What I felt as a kid walking into Roger David on a Friday night after school was more than just excitement. It was a mix of awe, belonging, and inspiration—a space where the energy was electric, and you felt like you were part of something special. That’s the feeling I want to recreate at 36th Chamber. If I can help someone walking through our doors experience even a fraction of what I felt back then, I know I’ve done my part.

What role does the local community play in your business, and how do you give back or stay connected to it?

We interact daily with many talented individuals, especially those in the arts, who often express feeling a lack of support and recognition in Canberra. This insight has ignited our passion to be a catalyst for change, creating a platform where local talent can truly thrive. Recently, we hosted a pop-up rave featuring renowned Detroit DJ “DJ Assault” alongside local DJ Womba. Despite having less than 24 hours to organise, the event showcased the versatility of our space and was met with an incredible turnout, proving the potential of our vision. This success has inspired us to think bigger. Next year, when DJ Assault returns, we’re planning to host a Canberra Celebration Festival. This event will bring together multiple singers, rappers, and DJs for performances throughout the day and night, with local vendor stalls set up in front of the shop to further engage the community. Through events like these, we aim to celebrate and amplify the creative spirit of Canberra.

Looking ahead, how do you see your “why” evolving, and what’s next for you and your business ?

As we continue to grow, our focus is on redefining what a barbershop can be. The goal is to create a space that moves beyond traditional stereotypes—a place that’s not just inclusive but innovative. Hair doesn’t belong to any one gender, and the way we approach grooming should reflect that.

Looking toward 2025, we’re exploring the idea of a hybrid space that fuses the energy and culture of a barbershop with the creativity and versatility of a salon. It’s about breaking down barriers and offering an environment where individuality thrives, no matter who you are. This evolution isn’t just about staying current—it’s about leading the way in creating a truly universal space for self-expression and connection.

the haiR that

was 2024!

As we close out the final issue of Barbershop Mag for the year, it’s time to reflect on the hair trends that defined 2024. While the end of 2023 saw men’s hair trending toward longer, 2024 has flipped that script. This year has been all about embracing throwback styles whilst simultaneously giving men the freedom to experiment with their look. It’s been a year of bold choices and creative reinventions.

The beginning of the year had everyone talking about the shocking movie Saltburn, and one of the standout trends to come from it was Jacob Elordi’s subtle mullet. While the mullet itself has firmly established itself in not only Australian culture but also men’s fashion, the “sullet”— a more refined blend of business and party — has emerged as a perfect balance for those seeking versatility. A trim that still cuts loose with your mates but still flys under the radar of corporate professionalism.

Whilst the past few years saw men’s hair going down the experimental route of bleach and colour, 2024 has seen a resurgence in curls, waves and even the perm. The uprise of barbering in men’s fashion has shown that our client’s are wanting to push the boundaries with their hair and being able to add volume and curl to their hair is such a cool direction to head in. The versatility of a perm between adding soft waves or tighter curls gives our clients that more more to aim towards. We’ve been able to go from Timothée Chalamet waves to Jack Harlow curls and everything in between. With the expansion of the barber skill set, clients are coming into the shop with a plan. It’s awesome to be able to see our clients willing to trust us on a journey for a complete change up in their image and embrace their individuality.

In August of this year, music fans around the world finally got the announcement they’d been waiting 15 years for: the reunion of the 90s powerhouse band, Oasis. And just as we dusted off our old parkas, mod trims have made a strong comeback toward the end of 2024. With the reunion tour on the horizon, men’s hair has embraced some major 90s throwbacks, featuring choppy, textured tops paired with extended perimeters — perfect for channeling that classic UK “scumbag” attitude the band brought with them. While the mod trim has always been in circulation, it hasn’t seen a resurgence as big as this year.

The red carpets and fashion awards this year have shown a glimpse into the trends we can look out for. The runways of the international fashion weeks were dominated with heavy gelled wet looks. We were seeing classic slick backs and side parts, but also more modern volume-centtric looks with shine. If these showcases, which typically predict the trajectory for men’s hair, are anything to go by, get those gels and pomades ready.

As we wrap up 2024, it’s clear this year has been about more than just trends—it’s been about evolution. Men’s hair has embraced the past, challenged norms, and set a new standard for versatility and individuality. From the barbershop chair to the global stage, 2024 has proven that men’s grooming is as dynamic and forward-thinking as ever.

While mastering the basics of cutting, styling, and grooming is essential, staying relevant in this fast-paced industry requires a commitment to continuous learning. From new trends and techniques to advanced tools and products, there’s always something to discover. Here’s why ongoing education is crucial for success in the barbering world.

1. Mastering Advanced Techniques

No matter how experienced you are, there’s always room to refine your skills or learn something new. Advanced barbering techniques like feather razor, scissor-over-comb precision, or intricate beard designs can elevate your craft and expand your client base.

Investing in workshops or masterclasses helps barbers stay sharp and innovate, offering clients the highest quality services.

2. Adapting to Diverse Client Needs

Today’s barbershop clients are more diverse than ever. From textured and curly hair to beards and buzz cuts, every client has unique needs. Continuous education helps barbers broaden their skillset to cater to all hair types and styles confidently.

Example: A barber who learns to work with textured hair can tap into a growing market and offer more inclusive services.

3. Keeping Up with Technology and Tools

The tools of the trade are constantly evolving, from cordless clippers to precision razors and grooming products infused with advanced formulations. Understanding how to use these tools effectively can save time, improve results, and enhance client satisfaction.

Attending expos or trade shows is a great way to stay informed about the latest innovations and integrate them into your practice.

4. Boosting Your Professional Brand

5. Enhancing Client Relationships

Clients value barbers who take the time to listen, understand their preferences, and deliver exceptional results. By staying updated on trends, techniques, and products, you can offer personalised recommendations and create a better overall experience.

6. Unlocking New Opportunities

Continuous learning doesn’t just make you a better barber—it can open doors to new opportunities. Whether you want to teach, open your own shop, or work with high-profile clients, ongoing education helps you build the credentials and confidence to take the next step in your career.

Ways to Continue Learning in Barbering

Honouring Legacy, Embracing Innovation

BARBER KEITH COWAN AND THE HEINIGER ORION

“HEINIGER’S TOOLS REFLECT ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. IT’S A FAMILY COMPANY WITH A STRONG REPUTATION FOR QUALITY.”

In the world of barbering, tradition and progress don’t just coexist—they thrive together, creating tools and techniques that honour the past while shaping the future. For fourthgeneration barber Keith Cowan, these values resonate deeply, and his partnership with the Swiss-made brand Heiniger is a perfect match. Heiniger’s Orion clipper, his latest go-to tool, exemplifies the company’s commitment to quality, marrying classic design with cutting-edge technology.

CRAFTING A LEGACY, ONE CUT AT A TIME

Keith Cowan’s journey into barbering began as a boy, spending summers in his grandfather’s two-chair barbershop. “My grandfather’s shop had a unique vibe,” Keith recalls. “It was full of laughter, and you could feel people’s spirits lift just by being there. That energy is something I’ve tried to recreate in my barbershop.” Today, Keith’s shop, Jerry’s Old Tyme Barbershop in Rancho Cucamonga, California, named in his grandfather’s honour, prioritises a warm client experience and high-quality tools—like Heiniger’s Orion, which has become an essential part of his craft.

A TRADITION OF QUALITY WITH A MODERN TWIST

Heiniger’s Orion isn’t just any clipper; it’s a modern barber’s dream. Known for their Swiss precision and heritage of excellence, Heiniger has taken the classic design of the beloved Oster Octane (which Heiniger had manufactured all along, but not many know that) and reintroduced it under their brand. “The Orion combines everything I loved about the Octane with the added benefits of Heiniger’s advancements,” Keith explains. “It’s durable, reliable, and just right for those foundational cuts and bulk removal. For barbers who stick to their fundamentals, this tool is indispensable.”

BARBERING ESSENTIALS, MADE TO LAST

As any barber knows, the right tool can make all the difference, especially under pressure. The Orion’s design is optimised for speed and precision, allowing Keith to work efficiently without compromising quality. “It’s fantastic for creating structure quickly and easily, which means more time focusing on the details,” he says. Keith’s consistency and reliability are essential for the clipper: “I appreciate tools that don’t need constant adjustments. With the Orion, it’s ready to go straight out of the box.”

CRAFTSMANSHIP AT ITS CORE

For Keith, Heiniger’s dedication to quality isn’t just about functionality—it’s about respect for the craft. “Heiniger is a family company with a genuine commitment to their work,” he says. “Their attention to detail is evident in every tool they produce.” Keith, a craftsman in his own right, finds this heritage of excellence especially meaningful. And as Heiniger continues to expand their range with products like the Tauro, Keith is eager to see what’s next.

TOOLS THAT SHAPE THE CRAFT

Heiniger’s tools aren’t just about the cut; they’re about enhancing the barber’s skill and providing a seamless experience for every client. “Whether it’s clearing bulk or refining details, the right tool can elevate the whole process,” Keith shares. “Heiniger’s tools are crafted with barbers’ needs in mind, from their durability to their precision, and that’s something every barber can appreciate.”

As Heiniger continues honouring tradition while innovating for the future, barbers like Keith Cowan set the stage for the next generation. For Keith, Heiniger’s commitment to quality is more than a feature—it is a legacy that helps him carry on his own.

The ultimate Solution for Hair Health.

The professional hair and beauty industry is welcoming an exciting new player that goes beyond the traditional approach to hair care. Dp Dermaceuticals™ has introduced the EXO-GROW™ Collection, a range specifically designed to target hair thinning, loss, and scalp health at its roots. For Barber professionals, this collection provides a sophisticated yet easy-to-apply solution that supports hair and scalp health, transforming the way clients experience hair care and empowering salons to deliver noticeable results.

RETHINKING HAIR CARE: START WITH THE SCALP

The foundation of healthy, vibrant hair lies in the scalp, a key insight that the EXO-GROW Collection takes to heart. Many products focus on the hair strands, aiming to smooth, style, and hydrate. While these can make hair look good temporarily, they often don’t address the core issues that lead to thinning and loss. EXO-GROW works from the inside out, creating an environment where hair can thrive.

Each formula in this cruelty-free, dermatologically approved line contains Dp Dermaceuticals’ proprietary EXO-GROW ComplexA™, a blend of proteins, peptides, and ceramides. The result? A deeply nourishing and rejuvenating effect on the scalp that extends to the strands, supporting hair that’s thicker, stronger, and healthier over time.

WHO IS THE IDEAL CLIENT FOR EXO-GROW?

The EXO-GROW Collection is designed for clients who are experiencing hair thinning, hair loss, or who struggle with scalp issues like dryness, irritation, or oil buildup. These clients may be noticing early signs of thinning or perhaps have long-standing concerns about weak or fragile hair. The collection is also an excellent choice for those looking to support overall hair health with products that work at the scalp level to encourage fuller, denser hair growth

• Concerned with Hair Thinning or Loss: Clients noticing reduced hair density, patchiness, or more frequent hair shedding will benefit from the strengthening and rejuvenating properties of EXO-GROW.

• Experiencing Scalp Sensitivity or Irritation: Those with sensitive scalps that react to traditional products can find relief in EXO-GROW’s calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients, which are designed to soothe and balance the scalp.

• Seeking Natural, Long-Term Solutions: EXO-GROW appeals to clients who want a sustainable approach to hair care, free from harsh

chemicals, parabens, and sulfates, and are invested in using products that align with their health and wellness goals.

• Looking to Revive Aging Hair: Clients who are concerned about agingrelated hair issues, such as greying or loss of volume, will appreciate the anti-aging benefits of the Colour Recharge Shampoo Bar and the scalp-nourishing properties throughout the EXO-GROW range.

THE HEART OF EXO-GROW

So, what’s the secret to EXO-GROW’s effectiveness? At its core is Exosome technology, a next-level approach to nourishing the scalp and hair follicles. Exosomes, in simple terms, are like tiny couriers packed with proteins and nutrients that deliver vital ingredients directly to hair follicles. Through EXO-GROW’s unique process, these Exosomes penetrate the scalp deeply, ensuring the nutrients reach where they’re needed most. This makes the formulas incredibly effective in supporting the growth of denser, healthier hair that keeps getting better with use.

WHAT MAKES EXO-GROW UNIQUE

The EXO-GROW Collection doesn’t stop with just one or two active ingredients. It brings together a powerful combination of natural extracts, amino acids, and peptides, all designed to work together for real, visible results:

1. PDRN Polynucleotides: Extracted from salmon, this ingredient enhances circulation to the scalp, improving overall blood flow to the hair follicles and encouraging growth. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which soothe the scalp and reduce irritation—a big plus for anyone with a sensitive or problematic scalp.

2. Sophora Japonica (Japanese Pagoda Tree): This extract is a true powerhouse against hair thinning. Known for its ability to inhibit certain hormones that contribute to hair loss, Sophora Japonica keeps hair in its growth phase longer, promoting a thicker, fuller appearance.

3. Centella Asiatica (CICA) Extract: Widely loved in skincare, CICA is equally effective on the scalp. It calms, hydrates, and supports skin health, making it ideal for creating a balanced environment where hair can flourish.

4. Polygonum Multiflorum Root Water: Rather than using plain water as a filler, EXO-GROW incorporates this root extract, known for its hairboosting properties. It supports the hair’s growth cycle and helps improve thickness over time, making hair appear denser and fuller with each use.

A FULL ROUTINE FOR COMPREHENSIVE CARE

Dp Dermaceuticals™ has thoughtfully designed the EXO-GROW Collection to cater to every aspect of hair and scalp care. Each product plays a unique role in the regimen, providing both immediate benefits and cumulative results that build over time.

• MG-EXO-GROW™: Ideal for in-salon treatments, this is the ultimate professional-grade product to rejuvenate hair follicles and enhance the hair’s natural cycle. This formula unique Exosome Technology includes the proprietary HLA-G ComplexA™ that ensures that the results do not plateau, but continue to accumulate whilst helping reduce hair fall, stimulate follicles, and improve scalp condition. It’s packed with amino acids, peptides, and other nutrients that hydrate and strengthen, supporting fuller-looking hair with regular use.

• EXO-GROW Hair Tonic: This at-home tonic is designed for daily use, helping to boost hair health in between salon visits, utilises the same Exosome Technology as the professional strength MG-EXO-SKIN. The Hair Tonic invigorates the scalp, promoting balance and encouraging a healthy hair cycle. Clients can apply it at home to continue reinforcing the results they see in the salon.

ANTI-AGING BENEFITS FOR HAIR

• EXO-GROW Scalp Mask: Often overlooked, the scalp is a critical area in any hair care routine. This detoxifying mask cleanses, removing buildup from oils, products, and environmental debris. With nourishing amino acids and ceramides, the Scalp Mask refreshes and resets the scalp, creating a healthy base for hair growth and supporting a comfortable, irritation-free feel.

• EXO-GROW Shampoo and Conditioner: This dynamic duo is designed to keep scalp and hair in peak condition. The shampoo, made with Hasuo (Polygonum Root Extract), gently cleanses while infusing the scalp with hydration and nutrients. The conditioner is equally powerful, with ingredients that add shine, improve elasticity, and smooth the hair cuticle, giving clients hair that looks as healthy as it feels.

AN IDEAL FIT FOR TODAY’S BARBERSHOP

The EXO-GROW Collection not only provides visible results but also integrates well with advanced salon treatments like microneedling, enhancing its impact. This gives Barber professionals the chance to offer clients a holistic approach to hair care that addresses issues from the root up. The range is also cruelty-free, free from harsh chemicals, and ethically produced, making it a premium choice that appeals to today’s mindful clients.

The EXO-GROW Collection even includes a Colour Recharge Shampoo Bar, a unique addition that uses natural plant pigments to revive greying hair without chemicals. This anti-aging effect allows clients to embrace a youthful look as they age naturally. The bar also doubles as a beard and shaving foam, providing a versatile tool for both hair and personal grooming.

GET READY TO TRANSFORM HAIR HEALTH WITH EXOGROW

The EXO-GROW Collection by Dp Dermaceuticals™ is more than just a product line; it’s a complete approach to overcoming the challenges of hair thinning and loss. Designed to work in synergy, these products help to rejuvenate the scalp, support healthy follicles, and promote stronger, fuller hair. With bioscience innovation at its core, EXO-GROW represents a shift in professional hair care, providing salon owners with an effective, ethical solution that delivers lasting results.

For Barbershop professionals, offering the EXO-GROW Collection means giving clients a new way to care for their hair and scalp that they won’t find anywhere else. It’s time to empower clients with the tools they need for visibly healthy, thriving hair, one treatment at a time.

“As Pacific Islander people, storytelling is the essence of our culture. It’s how we preserve our heritage and ensure those who come after us can continue on the path laid before them. That’s the heart of the NAU podcast.”

NAU: BUILDING A LEGACY THROUGH STORIES

The barbering industry never fails to inspire with its relentless drive and creativity. Two barbers making waves right now are Kalib Monaei (aka Moneycutz) and Jayden Waka, the minds behind NAUNot About Us, a podcast and media company redefining the way barbers connect as a community.

Having known Kalib and Jayden for a few years, I’ve shared the stage with them at various hair shows and now proudly collaborate as part of the 4B family. Recently, I sat down with them at NAU’s inaugural podcast session. The boys told me how they met only 2 years ago but immediately became best mates, bonding through their same interests, sense of humour and ultimately their drive and ambition. They both joined the 4B Education team last year, starting their journey into ‘doing more’ in the hair industry.

“One of the biggest lessons we’ve both learnt is from the man himself Mr Fraser Forsey. He once told us that there is 168hrs in a week most of us only work 38-42hrs out of that 168 so what are you doing for the other 126hrs?”, says Kalib. “The driving force for us is to be the change that we both wish to see within the world and our industry.”

As business owners out there can attest, the work everyone sees is only the tip of the iceberg of what goes into building something from the ground up. “NAU has honestly been two years in the making and has taken many forms throughout those two years, when we weren’t at work, we were either on FaceTime or meeting up in person brainstorming on what more we can do to make an impact within the industry. A lot of people will never see the behind the scenes and how many late nights, road bumps, sacrifices and headaches we have both gone through just to get to where we are now, but all the sacrifices are worth it when you see the Finished Product!”

Ultimately the boys want to create a lasting impression and legacy within the men’s hair space comparable to Mocha Group, AHC and countless other brands out their making an impact, beginning with a podcast then a planned Australian tour reaching out to regional barbershops. The boys want to create a blog and a network to tell the stories of barbers within their communities, and how the humble barbershop is

the cornerstone of so many communities out there.

But why ‘Not About Us’? For Kalib and Jayden, the answer is simple yet profound: “We give guys a voice.” As barbers, their focus extends beyond just cutting hair. They’re listeners, confidants, and cornerstones of their communities. Through NAU, they’re amplifying this role, using their platform to create a space for barbers to share their stories, not just their clients. “We believe the industry needs a young voice, to tell its stories” Says Jayden. However, Kalib and Jayden say that NAU is so much bigger than a “Podcast” they created NAU on the premise of creating a platform on which people can feel heard, represented and acknowledged. Then reciprocated from peers within the hair industry. When you hear Kalib and Jayden speak, their passion for connection and community shines through. “This project is about strengthening the bonds within our industry. It’s about giving a voice to the people who spend their lives listening to others.” NAU isn’t just a podcast— it’s a starting off point for our platform and network, it’s a celebration of the people, stories, and culture that make barbering more than a profession. It’s a movement that honours the storytelling tradition of their heritage while paving the way for future generations to find their own voices.

The debut season launching in January, features conversations with industry icons like Josh O’Meara-Patel and Doctor Tama, along with 4Barbers educators Lance Liufau, Lino D’Addario, Mark Rabone, and Simon Doyle.

Not sure how or why, but I too was invited to be a guest for season one. The NAU podcast feels like Moneycutz and Jayden hack, to squeezing all of the industry secrets from their industry idols. With barber.josh.o.p giving insights into education, industry growth and developing his empire, Mark Rabone reveals his secrets to 20 years of being on the top of the barbershop totem pole with his shop Esquire as well as other invaluable stories and secrets to barbering success from our industries brightest stars… and myself haha.

NAU is more than just a podcast—it’s a testament to the power of passion, purpose, and community. Kalib Monaei and Jayden Waka have taken the barbering industry’s storytelling tradition to new heights, crafting a platform that not only highlights the craft but also the people and culture that shape it. With their drive, vision, and commitment to leaving a legacy, these two are proving that barbering is about far more than hair—it’s about connection, culture, and creating something bigger than themselves, one thing is clear: NAU is not just about barbers—it’s for them.

Tune in now to season one of the NAU podcast, available now on all major podcast platforms.

Modern Traditional vs AppointmentBased Barber shopS

There’s a lot of different types of barbers out there these days, in the past few years we’ve had a lot of barbers apply and only want to do 1 haircut per hour whereas our business model is about doing 3 quality haircuts per hour.

Barber shops today have evolved far beyond their roots as simple spaces for haircuts and shaves. From casual walk-ins to high-end, appointmentonly studios, the barbershop industry is now a diverse and dynamic space offering varied experiences tailored to different customer preferences. Barbers not only have to master the art of cutting hair, but they also need to adapt to the changing demands of clients who expect more than just a basic trim. One of the most exciting ways barber shops can and have increased their sales revenue is through adding colour services to their service menu, creating new revenue streams and making the client experience that much better.

On the traditional side, we have the walk-in barber shops. These shops typically attract customers who prioritize convenience and efficiency. People drop in for a quick trim or shave, often without an appointment. Walk-in shops are fast-paced, and barbers work quickly to accommodate multiple clients in a day. While the focus is often on speed and volume, some walk-in shops manage to create a comfortable, welcoming environment that keeps customers coming back. That’s definitely what we aim for!

However, with a focus on speed and efficiency, the ways to increase revenue through additional services is somewhat limited in walk-in shops. That’s where creative thinking comes into play. One way for walk-in shops to boost sales is by introducing retail products, like creams, pomades, beard oils, or shampoos. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, barbers should aim to sell at least 10% of the shop’s turnover in retail products to enhance the profitability of the store. This is especially crucial in a high-volume environment where service margins are slim. Barbers can recommend products based on client needs, providing the whole circle of service right from the client coming in, getting a great haircut and confidence boost to making sure they can maintain their look at home.

Appointment-only barber shops are often able to offer these colour treatments more easily. With a more relaxed pace and the ability to schedule longer appointment times, these shops can charge a premium for colour services. Modern barber shops typically charge $120 per hour for basic haircuts and adding colour services can raise this rate significantly. For example, a beard dyeing session may cost an additional $30–$50, while colour can add anywhere from $50 to $150 to the final bill. Over time, these additional services can become a substantial revenue stream for the business, especially when clients are willing to pay for a full experience that includes both a cut and colour. By diversifying their offerings to include colour, barber shops can also increase client retention. Clients who come in for a simple cut may be enticed to try something new, like a beard dye or colour service, and then return for future appointments. When it comes to wages in Australia, adding services like colour & treatments can also have a direct impact on earnings. Barbers working in appointment-only shops or modern barber shops that charge a premium for these services can expect to earn more due to the higher average ticket price. A full-time barber can still expect to earn between $50,000 and $85,000 annually, but with the addition of colour services, their total earnings could exceed that range, particularly if they’re working in a highend shop where clientele are willing to spend more. For example, if a barber specializes in colour and sells at least one colour service per day, this could result in an additional $1,500 to $2,500 per month, depending on the pricing structure in store. This could be further added to with commission-based bonuses, where barbers receive a percentage of the

BLOG SPOT.

revenue generated by colour services. Some shops might implement a bonus structure tied to both service performance and retail sales, which encourages barbers to sell grooming products alongside colour services, creating an even larger revenue boost for the business.

In addition, the bonus structure could include incentives like a 5–10% bonus for barbers who meet certain sales goals (both retail and service-based) or consistently deliver high-quality service. These types of performancebased rewards not only motivate barbers to excel in their work but also encourage them to build a loyal customer base that appreciates both their cutting and colour skills. A barbershop that offers these additional services—colour, retail sales, and personalized care—helps its barbers feel valued and financially rewarded, ultimately fostering a happier and more motivated team.

To finish it off, today’s barbershop industry is about more than just haircuts. To stay competitive and increase sales revenue, barber shops must look for innovative ways to enhance their services and cater to changing client needs. Adding colour services can be a highly effective strategy and can boost both service charges and product sales. When barbers embrace colour services and retail recommendations, they can expand their skill set, increase their earning potential, and create a more fulfilling experience for their clients. Whether in a fast-paced walk-in shop or a premium appointment-only studio, expanding services to include colour is an exciting way to drive both client satisfaction and business profitability.

A FAMILY KEPT SECRET!

This one’s emotional! Let me share the story of how an unforgettable moment unfolded in the weeks leading up to the Modern Barber Awards.

My wife, Helen, calls me one day and says, “Why don’t you take Mia (our daughter) to the Barber Awards? She finishes her exams on Friday and the awards are on Sunday in Brisbane. You could celebrate her exams with a weekend getaway.”

I thought, “Sure, what a great idea!”

Little did I know, Helen and our eldest daughter, Isabella, were already part of a grand plan. Linda Woodhead and the Mocha Group had secretly been messaging them about my induction into the Hall of Fame. Yes, my beautiful family kept this huge secret from me.

Fast forward to awards day, Mia and I fly to Brisbane, check into the hotel and get ready. We meet up for pre-drinks with the Heiniger team: Creative Director Rex Silver, GM Gary Lyons, and Brian & Clare from Vitaman Global. I’m still completely oblivious.

The awards were incredible seeing friends nominated and celebrating winners. But something was off. Mia was nervously drinking water every five minutes, and refusing to leave her seat, worried she’d miss something. Then, Kellie Woodhead and the legend Jules Tognini began introducing the Hall of Fame award. Kellie talked about a barber who’d looked after celebrities and sports stars. I still didn’t catch on. Then Kellie dropped a name: “Australian Socceroo legend, Tim Cahill...” And suddenly, THE PENNY DROPPED! I turned to Mia, “S**T! That’s me!” She just smiled, phone in hand, recording everything.

Someone must’ve been cutting onions in that room... The tears came as I watched a five-minute video of my work, clips my daughter Isabella had secretly sent back and forth with Linda. Then, Kellie announced: “The 2024 Modern Barber Hall of Fame recipient is Frank Ciccone!”

I was numb. As I walked to the stage, I saw my face on the big screen and a standing ovation. The hugs from Jarred, Louise, and Linda meant everything. Kellie handed me the award, and it was surreal.

After my speech, I asked Mia, “Did I thank everyone?” She laughed, “Dad, I think you thanked the whole room!”

“Oh Jesus, I just saw 20 years of my life flash by on the big screen. Here is a recap of my speech on the night, that my daughter Mia transcribed, I wanted to add it here in the article, as some of those mentioned were not at the AMBA’s.

I was thinking about names off just the top of my head, and apologies if I don’t mention you. I spoke to Matt Clark and the Esquire grooming team; what you guys have done for yourselves and also putting a firecracker up everyone else’s bums, and even everyone in the room seeing what you guys do, just inspires us barbers. The collaborations are getting bigger and bigger in this industry. For example, Gareth Philpott, Fraser from Expo 4 Barbers, the Alessi boys doing what they’re doing in Melbourne.

There’s a whole bunch of you guys that are doing things in this industry for the good that you don’t even know that you’re doing it. I’ve been in the industry for so long that it felt like there had been a bit of a lull. And as I said last year, when the Mocha Group came into the system, they actually supported small businesses, not just a 20 man or woman salon. They supported the one-man band as well.

Mocha Group has basically resurrected the barber industry and the hair industry as well. I was at the hair awards recently and even there, the collaborations were getting bigger and bigger in this industry, where a lot of people were like poker players keeping their cards to their chest. And

now, everyone is saying, “Here you go, I’ve laid out the cards on the table, let’s share ideas.”

Mocha Group, Linda, Jarred, Louise, Kellie, and the whole team; thank you very much. To the Heiniger Team, Rex, Gary, Dale, Sam and Lyndall, the logistics and PR team; thank you as well.

As I said, I really want to reiterate; we’ve got to stick together more and more with the collaborations and just help each other out. And for the younger barbers, I get a whole bunch of messages every day asking questions on my Barbers of Australia page. I’m grateful they ask me these questions, but they can ask within their own salons because there are people now ready to support them.

I’ve had a great career, and I just want to give back to all these young kids. I really appreciate everyone who’s been a part of my life and the new batch of barbers coming up now.

I met a kid tonight Jordan from King’s Domain, and he was rapt to win. These kids who are giving it a crack and making it a career and not just a job anymore. It’s up to you young kids to continue what Mocha has created and what the likes of Fraser has created with Expo 4 Barbers.

Thank you so much to my family: my daughter Mia and my daughter Isabella, who is home with my wife Helen. Helen actually taught me how to cut hair. I was Hair by Ciccone’s first ever apprentice. So, my Mrs has been my boss for 28 years at work and at home. I sleep with my Mrs who’s also my boss and I don’t even get a f****ing pay rise!

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. Seriously, I can’t thank you all enough.”

As this is the final issue of 2024, I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and I hope you all SMASH IT in 2025

Cheers, Frank Ciccone

Mastering the Craft and the Cash Flow: Why Financial Literacy is Key for Every Barber!

Being a barber is an art form—a blend of skill, creativity, and personal connection with clients. As barbers, we spend years perfecting fades, scissor techniques, and mastering our tools. We pride ourselves on the skill and passion we bring to every haircut, striving to make our clients look and feel their best. But one of the biggest challenges in this industry goes beyond the chair: it’s the financial aspect. Just as with cutting techniques, mastering finances is crucial to creating a sustainable, successful career.

rThe truth is, you can be the best barber in town, with a loyal clientele and a fully booked schedule, but without financial stability, it’s tough to feel truly successful. Financial literacy might not seem as exciting as learning a new haircutting style, but understanding budgeting, savings, and investment strategies is just as important. When you build a strong foundation in personal finance, you set yourself up for long-term success—ensuring that your talent and hard work truly pay off.

KNOWING YOUR TOOLS—AND YOUR FINANCES

One of the first things we learn as barbers is the value of good tools. We invest in clippers, shears, and razors, knowing that these tools are essential to our craft. But while we’re willing to invest in the equipment that keeps us in business, many of us overlook the importance of investing time in financial education. Just as we wouldn’t trust a pair of cheap, dull scissors to create the perfect cut, we shouldn’t trust a weak financial foundation to build a sustainable career.

Learning the basics of budgeting, cash flow, and saving should be viewed as an essential tool in your barbering kit. A solid financial plan is like a high-quality clipper: it helps you work efficiently and get the results you want. The first step in financial literacy is understanding where your money goes. Start by tracking your income and expenses. Knowing how much you’re spending on rent, supplies, utilities, and other business costs gives you a clearer picture of your true earnings. This process is just like maintaining your equipment—you’re ensuring that everything is running smoothly and that you’re not spending unnecessarily.

CREATING FINANCIAL STABILITY THROUGH BUDGETING

Financial stability begins with budgeting. A budget allows you to manage both your personal and business expenses without constantly stressing about money. For many barbers, income can vary week to week, which can make budgeting a challenge. However, setting aside a fixed amount for essentials and creating an emergency fund for slower months can help smooth out those fluctuations.

Consider setting up separate accounts for personal and business expenses. By keeping your business income and expenses separate from personal spending, you can better track your profitability. This clarity can help you make informed decisions, whether that’s investing in a new tool, expanding your services, or even hiring additional help.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE: SAVING AND INVESTING

Building wealth goes beyond just earning and budgeting; it involves saving and investing for the future. Think of savings as your “financial haircut,” trimming back on unnecessary spending and putting away funds that can later support your goals, like opening a shop or buying a house.

BLOG SPOT.

Many barbers overlook retirement planning, thinking they’ll work indefinitely. But investing in a retirement fund, even a modest one, can set you up for comfort later in life. Even small contributions to an IRA or a simple brokerage account can grow over time, providing you with security and peace of mind.

FINANCIAL LITERACY AS A PATH TO INDEPENDENCE

Learning to master finances can be as empowering as perfecting your craft. A barber who is financially literate isn’t just skilled behind the chair— they’re a savvy business owner. Understanding finances can give you greater control over your career, helping you avoid burnout, and giving you the option to invest in your growth. Whether that’s expanding your barbershop, hiring apprentices, or even opening additional locations, financial knowledge opens doors.

Ultimately, the path to financial stability for a barber is like the journey to mastering a fade—it requires patience, practice, and persistence. By building strong financial habits and mastering your budget, you’re investing in more than just your career—you’re investing in your future. With financial literacy in your toolkit, you can build the career of your dreams, achieve long-term success, and enjoy the freedom and independence you’ve worked so hard for.

Never stop learning, stay on your grind & keep it TopShelf.

Staff Empowerment and why it is so important!

Empowerment is the degree of autonomy and self-determination in people, in communities and in business. This enables them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority. It is the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling your own life and claiming your rights.

Staff empowerment examples include giving your team members autonomy and responsibility to manage their own work, objectives and deadlines. Instead of micromanaging them, you provide them with the tools and support necessary for success and you trust them to manage their own column.

In order to implement a strategy of employee empowerment, you need to first be able to trust your employees. As the team leader you can promote a culture of empowerment by promoting this sense of trust. Give your staff a voice by requesting and acting on consistent feedback. Provide them with the opportunities to grow and develop by regularly offering options for career progression and increasing their responsibilities.

Recognise employee achievements to help improve confidence levels and engage with your team to establish clear expectations and guidelines. Share your objectives and vision so that your team understand how their role contributes to overall salon success.

The benefits of staff empowerment are increased trust in leadership, improved motivation levels, increased creativity and higher levels of employee retention. All of this increased performance and productivity will also improve the bottom line of your business.

To empower employees:

1. Recognise great work and celebrate employee’s achievements. This will help them feel more empowered and push them to continuously improve their performance. Support, encourage and praise your employees and show that you are invested in them.

2. Show your staff that what they say matters and their feedback is important. Encourage your employees to provide regular, honest feedback. Continuous performance monitoring established open channels of communication and transparent dialogue.

3. Support your staff and provide learning and development opportunities. Help your employees to develop professionally and encourage them continuously improve their skills and knowledge. Reward exceptional workers and design a clear path for development so that they strive to hit their next goals.

Make sure that your team know that you are there to support them because you care about their contribution to the overall success of the business.

BARBERS CHAIR

A Barbershop Owner’s Survival Story From Drowning in Problems to Swimming in Solutions.

When faced with challenges that seem insurmountable, one thing sets those who thrive apart from those who struggle: their focus.

Whether it’s a difficult or dissatisfied client, team issues, or financial pressure, where you direct your attention plays a pivotal role in shaping the outcome.

Unfortunately, most people tend to focus on the problem.

Take Jake, for instance. He’s been struggling to keep his head above water. His chair is always busy, and while his other two barbers have a few gaps, the appointment book looks pretty full for the next month. The problem is, Jake lost a key team member a year ago and hasn’t been able to replace him since.

For Jake, the issue isn’t a lack of clients; it’s a lack of skilled barbers to take care of them. This has created a ripple effect, leading to cash flow problems.

Every day, he feels like he’s swimming against a never-ending current. He’s so focused on just getting through each day that he loses sight of the upcoming quarterly tax bill. When he clicks on an email from his accountant and sees that his tax is due in six weeks, he feels completely overwhelmed, adding to the stress he’s already carrying.

For days, all Jake can think about is, “How am I going to find $10,000?” His thoughts are stuck in a loop, spinning from “I’m already so busy I can’t fit any more clients in” to “How can I possibly find $10,000 in such a short period?” to “I’m going to lose the shop, my team will be left stranded, how will I pay my rent, and what about all my loyal clients?”

Jake was embarrassed to find himself in this situation. After years in the business, he thought he should know better. He was scared and anxious about what others might think, but he confided in a friend who also owned a business.

After listening to Jake’s struggles, his friend Liam asked a question that seemed to snap Jake out of the downward spiral he had been in since seeing his tax bill.

“What possible solutions have you thought about?”

Jake looked at Liam, a bit surprised. “Solutions?” he asked.

“Yes, what are your options to get this bill paid?”

Jake paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and then let out a small laugh. “Why didn’t I think of that?”

“What?” asked Liam.

“A solution!” exclaimed Jake. “I’ve been so focused on not having the money and worrying about how I’m going to pay my tax bill that instead of working through my options, I’ve been spiraling into a panic about losing my shop, damaging my reputation, and everything falling apart.”

Liam, with a hint of curiosity, said, “Okay, that’s a great realization. So, what might one solution be?”

It was difficult at first, but Jake started coming up with a list of potential solutions. Not all of them would bring in $10,000; in fact, none of them would solve the problem entirely. But the more Jake focused on solutions, the better his ideas became.

After implementing a few of his ideas and contacting the Tax Office to explain his situation, Jake felt a wave of relief. His conversations with Liam and the tax office had given him a plan, and for the first time in a while, Jake felt like he could breathe again.

Jake’s journey highlights the importance of focus in our lives. It shows that where we choose to direct our attention can greatly affect our experiences.

WHERE FOCUS GOES, ENERGY FLOWS.

Your focus is a powerful force. It’s where your energy flows, and what you focus on is what you’ll attract more of. Jake’s story is a perfect example of this.

Initially, Jake was focused on the problem—a $10,000 tax bill. By continuing to focus on this, he only saw more problems, and he started catastrophizing about everything that could go wrong.

After confiding in Liam, Jake experienced a crucial shift in perspective. He went from dwelling on the problem to exploring possible solutions.

Nothing else changed. Jake still owed $10,000 to the tax office. He was still short of skilled barbers. But by shifting his focus from the problem to the solution, he stopped spiraling into greater despair and started seeing a way forward. For a long time, Jake felt like he was swimming against the current, and now, after focusing on solutions, it felt like he was swimming with the current. Where he once saw challenges and obstacles, Jake now saw opportunities.

Be mindful of what you’re focusing on, and if necessary, shift your perspective.

Adapting your barbershop to ever-changing client needs.

At the core of every barbershop is the client. And success in the barbering industry depends on understanding them, adapting to their needs, and creating exceptional experiences. With technology transforming how businesses operate, using it to your advantage can make all the difference.

Understanding client needs in a competitive market

In today’s fast-paced world, convenience and personalisation are top priorities for clients. They expect seamless booking experiences and tailored services that fit their busy lives. Meeting these demands can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re balancing the daily grind of running your shop.

Fresha, the barber booking software, sat down with Declan Seca, owner of Aces in Melbourne. He said: “Blast and auto campaigns are probably my favourite part about using Fresha. They keep my clients connected and coming in. And I can run them in the background so I’m not spending too much time messaging lots of people in one go.”

Fresha’s platform embodies this mindset. Connecting with your clients is a key part of growing your business - and with automated messages and blast campaigns, you can do it with very minimal effort.

The power of seamless booking and scheduling

One of the most common frustrations for barbershop clients is the hassle of booking appointments. Whether it’s unclear schedules, long waits, or outdated systems, these pain points can push clients to look elsewhere. Fresha resolves these issues with a user-friendly online booking system that’s available 24/7. Fresha also offers automated reminders, reducing no-shows and making sure clients stay engaged. By streamlining the booking process, you improve your client’s experience from the moment they book to the moment they leave your chair.

Personalise your client profiles

Building strong relationships with your clients means knowing what they want. Fresha’s detailed client profiles help barbers keep track of appointment history, preferences, and feedback. This allows you to offer a personalised experience tailored to each client’s unique style and needs. For example, you can save your client’s preferences in their Fresha profile. You can also send new clients consultation forms ahead of their appointment to make sure you’re prepared to deliver exactly what they’re looking for.

Use insights to improve operations

Data-driven insights are invaluable for understanding trends and improving how your barbershop operates. Fresha provides analytics on sales, bookings, and client behaviour, helping you spot areas for growth and make informed decisions about your business. These insights not only help you enhance your services but also guide your marketing efforts.

Market the right messages to the right clients

Attracting new clients while retaining loyal ones is vital for the success of any barbershop. Fresha’s built-in marketing tools make this process simple, offering automated promotions, email campaigns, and review management.

For instance, you can launch a targeted promotion for beard grooming services or send personalised thank-you emails to regular clients after their appointments. With Fresha, nurturing relationships and building a thriving client base becomes effortless.

Take payments the way clients want

Payment processing can be a hassle for both barbers and clients. Fresha makes this easier by supporting secure, cashless payments like Tap to Pay on iPhone and upfront payments in the app. Clients appreciate the ease and flexibility, while you benefit from faster and more reliable transactions.

Remember Where You Started in the Barbering Industry.

In the fast-paced world of barbering, as we rise to new heights of success, it’s easy to get caught up in the momentum of achievement. Whether you’re running your own barbershop, taking on educational roles within the industry, or becoming a well-established member of a top-notch team, one thing remains crucial: never forget where you started.

For many barbers, the journey begins in humble surroundings. It might be a small barbershop where you swept floors or a school where you first picked up clippers. Those early days were likely filled with long hours, mistakes, and challenges, but also learning, growth, and passion. Remembering these formative experiences not only keeps you grounded but also reminds you of the value of persistence and the importance of foundational skills.

One of the most essential aspects of this journey is the people who helped you along the way. Perhaps it was a mentor who taught you the basics of barbering, a colleague who shared their tips and tricks, or a boss who gave you a chance when you were just starting out. These individuals played a significant role in shaping your career, and their support, advice, and encouragement enabled you to grow into the barber you are today. Acknowledging the contributions of these people ensures that we don’t lose sight of the value of mentorship and collaboration. In an industry that thrives on creativity, tradition, and craftsmanship, it’s vital to remember the hands that helped mold you. Recognising your roots in the industry is not

just about nostalgia but about paying respect to those who guided you and provided the stepping stones toward your success.

As you gain new opportunities, own your own business, employ others, and build a life for yourself and your family, remember that you are now part of a bigger picture. Just as you were once guided, it’s now your responsibility to pass on the knowledge and experience to the next generation. Help foster the growth of new talent, ensuring that the barbering industry continues to thrive. Whether it’s offering advice to an apprentice, providing training, or simply sharing your story, you are contributing to the longevity and health of the craft.

Your career milestones, from landing your first job to expanding your business, are not just personal victories. They are markers in the collective evolution of the industry. By staying connected to your beginnings and giving back to the community that nurtured you, you are helping to keep barbering alive for future generations.

So, never lose sight of where you started. The people who helped you, the lessons you learned, the mistakes you made, and the challenges you overcame are the foundation of your success. By remembering your roots and actively participating in the growth of the next generation, you ensure that barbering continues to flourish—now and in the future.
