Well, this is my very first Editors letter for Beauty Biz, and I truly feel honoured to be taking over the reins from the absolutely gorgeous Clare.

I’m not sure how everyone is feeling about 2022, if you were anything like me, you were tip-toeing nice and quietly into the New Year and not having any ridiculous resolutions, but just hoping for a year of calm, peace, and normality with no more disruptions.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t usually set any New Year’s resolutions, but I do make sure that every year, I create a Vision Board, and I choose my ‘word’ for the year.

I create my Vision Board in Canva and then set it as my desktop screensaver, I set it as the screensaver on my phone and I also have a printed copy that is pinned on my wall in my office. This way it is visual and in my face every day.

My word for this year is ‘momentum’ and if you Google the meaning of ‘momentum in life’ it says, “Doing a little more of the things that move you forward and a little less of the things that hold you back.” I found the word quite fitting, a perfect word for me as it very much aligns with my 2022 Vision Board and my intentions of not allowing fear to stop me from moving forward.

So now to this issue! We are kicking of the year with lots of value and goodness in this first magazine of the year, with our business writers, bloggers and marketing guru’s, and some wonderful feature articles such as the stunning new Bathhouse in Sydney and The Facial Studio in Auckland, New Zealand. We spend 10 minutes with the amazing Paula Cliffin, and we catch up with Kelly Inglis and Georgie Westley of Australian Colour Technologies, plus lots more…

There is lot’s to look forward to for this year with Beauty Expo Australia being held once again, the country’s largest gathering of beauty brands, suppliers, and professionals, taking place on the 20-21 August 2022 at the ICC Sydney. Beauty Biz Editor Louise May caught up with Kelly to find out what motivated them both to join forces!

What inspired you both to form a partnership, how did this come about?

Being Georgie’s first ever tattoo student we obviously stayed in close contact and formed a bond right from the start. Talking about the products available in Australia and how difficult it was to get Goldeneye from overseas all the time we decided to approach the company together to see if there was something we could do to be distributors.

What’s given your business and partnership strength over the years?

Before anything else we are great friends and have enormous respect for one another. We are both mothers with multiple businesses so can rely heavily on each other or support. Having that one person who always understands and has your back is invaluable. We are also polar opposites when it comes to our strengths. Georgie is bright and bubbly and passionate about science and teaching. Whereas I am quite shy and reserved and love nothing more than to run the behinds the scenes and manage the finances.

What challenges have you faced, if any? How do you both stay strong and agile during these unprecedented times?

Our biggest challenge is our distance from one another. Living in different cities makes it hard to plan and connect sometimes. We try to spend time together with our families on the weekends and holidays so that we can just be close enough to talk through a big list of things. We also call and text daily about anything and everything.

With the constant lockdowns we found we had more time to focus and accelerate some of our other projects and having them to do took our minds off Covid. We also found the silver lining in being able to spend more time at home with our families and putting back time in our own personal growth and education. Georgie wrote and launched several cosmetic tattoo webinars and I continued with my master’s degree studies.

What is on the agenda for the future?

We have massive plans for AusColTech as we call it. We are building a warehouse this year which is our biggest achievement yet and a very exciting one. We have several products in production and will be launching later this year as well.

Some of our own and also some new things from Goldeneye Micropigmentation that we have helped develop for the last 12 months.

We are exhibiting at the Sydney Beauty Expo in August with our skincare brand bdr Medical Beauty as well as at APMAC in November.

Whatever we do, we take our time to make sure it is perfect for our customers.

INSPIRED BY LIFE… 10 MINUTES WITH PAULA CLIFFIN

Paula Cliffin is a passionate Facialist and Corneotherapist, specialising in Oncology Aesthetics, with over 30 years in the industry. Having worked as a Skin Therapist for more than 3 decades, Paula has been exposed over this time to new and existing clients alike, many of whom are on cancer journeys.

“In my younger days I used to freak out to be honest,” says Paula, “because there really wasn’t much information around, about what was beneficial for these clients, with treatments and ingredients. Luckily, this has changed immensely over the years, meaning I have been able to gather information, talk to colleagues, doctors and eventually, when training was available – undertake this. I choose to train with Morag Currin, who teaches through Oncology Training International.”

“Working with Oncology clients has changed my life, my focus, and the way I work. They have and continue to be my life’s work. I have so much passion for these people, their skin and their souls coming through the other side

of their journeys or their passing. You become very much, a part of their recovery or passing journey, which is an absolute privilege on so many levels. I often receive the most beautiful notes of thanks from families because we are not just helping them with their skin, we touch them in a non-medical way and make them feel some sort of normal – such an important point to remember.”

“This quote really sums up what inspires me,” says Paula. “It’s about human beings who

are dealt incredibly harsh cards, yet live in the moment, happily. The lives I am fortunate to touch every day carries me in so many ways. It motivates me to be a better person and try to do everything I do a little bit better. It is such a privilege to be part of their journey, to share in their recovery or their passing. I face each day with passion for skin and compassion for the people who entrust me with theirs.”

Beauty Biz Editor Louise May had the pleasure of spending some time with Paula recently, to find out more about her journey thus far, in the Industry.

Can you please tell us a little about yourself?

I was born in Auckland NZ but spent most of my life in the South Island, Christchurch to be exact. I am fortunate enough to have had the most amazing parents. All I remember about my beautiful mum, who passed just six months ago, was her beautiful skin and eyes that smiled from the inside and my father, was the hardest worker in the world. Both amazing role models. Mum and Dad decided to immigrate to Australia in the 80s, so I have spent more of my life in Australia than NZ, am very proudly naturalised and love calling Australia home. I have three amazing adult sons, a beautiful shepherd called Chewy and a cat called Chuck Norris (he is very old, the boys named him when they were young).

Tell us how you first started out in Beauty Therapy.

Mum got me started in this industry inadvertently, as she was a nurse. However, she was a nurse who took very good care of her skin and as a child I used to always mess with her products. Whilst she was very patient

with me, I am sure I probably drove her up the wall. As a teenager, mum taught myself and my two sisters the importance of caring for our skin. I still remember her telling me to always “use the best ingredients you can afford at the time”. I must have taken that to heart, as this started me on my quest to know what were these ingredients written on skincare products. I then went on to do a Beauty Therapy Diploma & very early in my career meet Flo Barrett-Hill, say no more…

What do you love most about the industry?

I live my life sustainably so love that the industry is getting wiser in relation to this aspect. All businesses need to embrace this as it is not going anywhere any time soon. We can all make little changes which lead to big changes for our planet. I also love the special relationships which are formed with clients, as it is very personal what we practice. Professionalism is so important however really caring for someone is as well. My clients have buoyed & carried me in the past 6 months, they were my reason for getting up in the morning (and I desperately needed a reason). They filled my home and clinic with flowers, with living plants, they hand wrote letters, they cooked for my family, they cried with me and continue to do so. They said they were giving back, as this is what they had received from me over the years. Very humbling indeed!

How do you juggle work and personal life balance?

I have been taught some big lessons in the past couple of years, I am sure everyone has with what has been happening in the world.

My lessons have been about time and relationships. As I said, I lost mum, then 4 weeks later my sister to Parkinsons. I was so very privileged to be with them both as they passed over and now realise this life is about nothing other than our relationships and life experiences which lead to memories, which keep those loved ones alive in us forever. Before this I can’t say I did very well on this front, especially when you work for yourself. Now though, everything has changed, and I have a beautiful balance and find I have more to give, by being balanced.

What is your big “why”? Why do you do what you do and what do you love most about it?

My “why” is because skin health can change people’s lives. Therapists need to arm themselves with independent education, so they understand the following. I recently read a fantastic book about microbiome which states the following: Recently discovered, a balanced microbiome supports our skin’s ability to defend and recover. Essentially, it’s one of the skin’s first lines of defence from the world around us. The architecture of the skin and the associated microbiome are increasingly being viewed not as two separate entities but rather as part of a holistic whole wherein the microbiome forms an outward facing layer atop normal healthy skin, which performs a range of important biochemical and protective functions.

It is ALL about this “holistic whole”, this is the future of skin care and therapy!

You specialise in Oncology Care, can you please tell us about this, what you do regarding Oncology Care and how you came to specialise in this field?

Oncology skin support is a really big subject, I will try and keep this short. This is going to sound cliché, but sick clients are my life’s work. Much has to be considered for the oncology client – starting with what type of cancer they are suffering from because what we put onto their skin is vitally important. I practice without anything that has fragrance or essential oils for that matter because of the alteration of smell, can make them ill and these days allergies are also high on the agenda. Interestingly, even though I use nothing with any fragrance or smell, including cleaning, everyone walks in and says it smells amazing when they walk through the doors.

No hot towel cabbies, because of the pathogens and bacteria that can build up in the same & my business model allows a lot of time in treatments for both sick and well clients. You need to consider the oncology client won’t be very mobile when they are undergoing treatment, so you need to have the time to not be rushed. All clients deserve one on one time with us,

but it is important to an oncology client’s health we make no mistakes under pressure. I work on the basis of quality, not quantity. Oncology clients want skin support; however, they also want non-medical touch, a confidant and everything in between. Looking after very sick clients is not for everyone, I look at it as a privilege to be part of their lives to recovery or passing. It is a therapist’s duty of care to know what is safe and what is not for a client who has health issues. My specialisation with sick clients has happened over time, before there was specific training, I research limited resources on skin support and then trained with Morag Currin – where I met likeminded people in Australia and around the world. Great to have a network to plug in to.

Do you have a motto or signature life philosophy?

I practice gratitude on a daily basis, I always have to get my mind right when so many ill clients are walking through my doors but especially in the past few years. A quote comes to mind: “Don’t aspire to make a living, aspire to make a difference” – Denzel Washington.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

The advice I have based my career on is as therapists we need to understand the why of both treatments and skin care products. Our duty of care is profound to clients! We need to know when not to use a modality or treatment and must be all over the ingredients we are applying to their skin. It is so important to undertake independent training regularly and not just brand training.

What else are you passionate about?

Kangala Kangaroo & Wildlife Rescue was established early 2020 by the Karran Family, after the devastating bushfires on Kangaroo Island. They strive to help save wildlife in need, offering care, treatment, and rehabilitation. The Karran Family stories after that Black Summer, are moving – as they fled the wildfires with their family they realised the animals had given up, so they got the family to safety and went back in and saved hundreds of injured animals over and over again, in those following days. Hero’s in my eyes. They are now the only rescue on the island and rely completely on donations. They send me pictures often & these pictures absolutely make my day.

What’s on the agenda for you for the future?

After the year that has been I am planning a UK trip in December. We haven’t seen our son or granddaughter in the UK for nearly 3 years, so in the name of work life balance I am jumping on a plane in early December because I need to - for me, for my heart, to keep myself balanced and to heal. Until then I am refocusing on my clients for the next 11 months and the challenge of getting skin to its “holistic whole” best!

BORN OUT OF THE LOVE OF SKIN

At the young age of 18 years old I had only one plan… says Jasmine, and that was to work for one of the worlds most desired product brands, Dermalogica. I called their head office in London and asked “how can I work for one of your flagship companies”. The lady on the other end said, well you have to be in London for an interview, so I sold my car and flew to London!

I waited a few months before getting and interview with them and landed one of my dream jobs, to become a Facialist! after one month of in-depth training in all things skin, I started at the High Street Kensington branch and was a Facialist to some of the most famous celebrities, Makeup Artists and Journalists.

Fast forward, with marriage and a baby and a big move to New Zealand and yet again landing another amazing job opportunity, working at Louise Grey Mission Bay, and that is where my career flourished… being able to work with someone with as much profound knowledge as Louise Grey, my understanding and passion grew deeper and deeper. Whilst working there I gained my International Post

Today I’m the proud founder of The Facial Studio, set in a small west coast town south of Auckland. I started my salon in our spare room and within 2 months I moved into a shared space on the main road, which I very quickly out grew, and opened up my own studio.

2 years later and we had out grown that space, and now I have created my dream salon with my dream team. From 100-yearold heritage Rimu flooring, to beautiful soft colours and touches, this is a space where you can definitely come to relax and reset.

With all that I have learnt on my journey around the world and all the different ethnicities, environmental influences, and heritages, I have created a studio where not one treatment is the same, each clients treatments are carefully curated, giving them a treatment journey unique to their skin needs and their concerns.

Studying in Cape Town, South Africa at the young age of 16, Jasmine Payne had never dreamt that the career ahead of her would take her to the places it did, or that she would get to meet the most amazing and influential people along the way.

Louise May recently caught up with Jasmine to find out more about her new “Facial Studio” location and her journey in the Industry.

What drew you to Beauty Therapy in the first place?

Honestly, I hated school and wanted out, so the easiest thing I thought would be to study Beauty Therapy, it was not until I worked in London that I realised that I was obsessed with all things skin!

You live and work in a small town in NZ, How have you gone about growing a successful business in such an isolated place?

Yes, we are in a small town on the south west coast of Auckland, honestly it only took a few clients to experience a treatment with us and the word spread like wide fire. I also built the presence of my business on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. But mostly it was high treatment standards coupled with amazing results.

What treatments do you offer and what do you specialise in?

Whilst we mostly specialise in Skin Facial Treatments we offer all beauty treatments from waxing, to massage, and old school manicures and pedicures.

What is your favourite treatment?

Well that’s easy…. It would be the entire journey of a skin programme, from the Observe skin diagnostic analysis to the indepth consultation and creating the perfectly curated skin plan and treatment journey! I love the excitement and hopefulness I see in clients’ eyes and then the dedication they put in along with our amazing brands and facial knowledge ends in life changing results.

You use Dermaviduals in your Facial Studio, what made you choose Dermaviduals as your Key Brand?

After working in the industry for over 16 years and in countries around the world I struggled with box type brands and facials. I never felt like I could curate the most unique and individual facials until I came across Dermaviduals, after consulting with a rep I was hooked. Every single facial we offer is different, we have to really think about the mixing of ingredients and what part it plays in the facial, how it will work and sit, and what we are trying to achieve. From bespoke cleansers to serums, moisturisers and masks, are all custom designed by us with a lot of thought and planning. We are basically little facial pharmacists combining ingredients with skin knowledge for the perfect product.

Congratulations on your new Facial Studio property, how was the process of expanding, finding staff, and navigating it all during a pandemic?

Honestly, I had moments where I thought, what on earth am I doing, expanding 5 weeks into a 4-month lockdown in the middle of the 2-year pandemic! however knowing that I have the most loyal and amazing clients, and our diary was full.. we need to have a second room and more space. Well I jumped in with both feet and turned an open plan hairdressing salon, into a two room, retail and consult area in just 8 weeks, of course it helped having a hands on handyman hubby, but there were many days with 4 kids a dog and paint everywhere, we did it and its every thing I ever wanted and more. I hired a senior therapist 1 week before the lockdown and wow that was stressful, but turn out perfectly.

What challenges have you had to overcome during the process?

It all came down to running a strict budget and lots of research and online shopping of course, as it was a level 4 lockdown here so nothing was open. I ordered every thing and when we hit level 3 it all started being shipped.

I learnt that by mixing a few key expensive pieces with some cheaper ones works and looks lush., being that we are in a heritage building with 100-year-old Rimu flooring, the salon has a very clean and natural feel to hit.

What do you consider your own top 3 pillars of success to be?

1) Knowledge is POWER always.

2) I had an amazing mentor who taught me so much and pushed me when I needed it. She always gave the that fire in my belly when this got tough.

3) Consistency is key, I have my staff trained to a high level and we all do the same treatments therefore clients are happy to gravitate to anyone of us as they always will have the same skin journey and treatment.

How do you juggle a busy family/ work life balance?

It’s no walk in the park raising 4 kids, it comes down to being highly organised and running a tight ship, and I could not do it all without the help of my supportive husband who also runs his own business. I love my job; I am lucky enough that I don’t have to work, but I chose to as its my love for it that drives my passion and success.

Any plans of expanding your Brand further, or exciting projects in the Pipeline?

Well, we do have some really exciting things in the pipeline for this year including a new treatment/machine. Currently we have just launched our Skin Membership campaign for the next few months which is really exciting, especially in time like these, it’s easier for clients to budget with a skin membership in place, and it creates recurring revenue for the business. And yes, I would love to open up a Facial Studio 2.0 in the next few years, so watch this space…

The founder of Eden Spa in Camden NSW, has taken her beauty expertise one step further to create a destination Palm Springs-inspired Bathhouse in a quirky bushland setting, 80 minutes south of Sydney.

Editor, Louise May spoke with owner Ashlee Laura, to find out more about her journey in the Industry and her Inspiration around The Bathhouse.

My good friend at the time was a Beauty Therapist and approached me about starting her own business (at this time I was pregnant with my first child). My husband encouraged the idea as he knew how passionate I was about starting a business and knew I wasn’t completely fulfilled in my current role. It felt like an amazing opportunity, I had always loved treating myself to day spas as well as seeing my Dermal Therapist weekly to correct my skin.

A few years prior I had a very traumatic experience within the workplace and developed a speech disorder called Spasmodic Disorder caused by stress, which affected my speech. It was extremely debilitating for me which caused me to go into a deep depressive spiral. The only way to assist with my speech was Botox injections into my vocal cords every 3 months. After the experiences I endeavoured in the workplace, I knew I wanted to recreate a space where not only my staff would feel valued, but a space where my clients would also feel respected and empowered.

What drew you to therapy in the first place?

On average only 60% of gift vouchers are redeemed but on paper, vouchers are seen as a liability, unfortunately. During the first pandemic lockdown in 2020, I have never worked harder in my life to ensure we had a flow of income. We were closed for 3 months and managed to make $85,000 in Facial Boxes (a concept that was created to enjoy facials from the comfort of our clients’ homes – Organic Rituals our natural skincare range wage born). I was absolutely blown away by the love and support that was given to my business, and all of the hard work had paid off. This was a pivotal moment for me, where I realised, I need to go bigger and better. Rather than selling my business, I wanted to open up a sister company that women need in their lives. A place that’s a little more upbeat and vibrant than your traditional day spa. A place where you can destress and feel like you’re away on a holiday resort. I had always wanted something as big as this almost like a wellness retreat, but I’m so much more in love with The Bathhouse concept.

What do you consider your own top 3 pillars of success to be?

Tell us how you got started in the industry?

I always knew I my heart that I wanted to run my own business however never knew what avenue I wanted to take. I never really enjoyed school, but I was super creative. When I completed year 12, I went to Tafe and studied my Diploma in Design and my Diploma in Event Management. I then completed 4 years of studying for a Bachelor in Business, majoring in Marketing full time whilst working full time. I worked for some amazing companies in the marketing department including Swissotel, Rheem & Gravox. Working in completely different industries gave me such a diverse understanding of business and how to create

There is nothing more rewarding for me then helping people. I have always loved making women feel amazing in their own skin, this is my number one value. I wasn’t a Beauty Therapist when I opened my business Eden Spa, but quickly knew that if I wanted the business to be successful, I needed to know the ins and outs of the entire business. Therefore, I went on to study Beauty Therapy.

How did your business “The Bathhouse” come to be? (Is it an extension of Eden Spa?)

When Eden Spa hit its 5th Birthday, I stepped completely away from the spa and rented my own office so I could dedicate myself 100% to growing the business. I built all the systems and created a structure while the business still made over $1 million p/a. I started to feel like I had achieved all of my goals and I wanted more. I needed a new challenge, something to work towards. I tossed and turned around the

I would most certainly say determination to succeed is my first one. I have always been an overachiever, which can often be a difficult thing for me, as I can be too hard on myself. It’s something I’m always working on though. My second pillar would be communication within my team. Communication was never a strong point for me, which is why It’s now so important. After many experiences, I had a life changing moment where I knew it was one of my imperfections.

My third pillar is caring for others. I really do care and am so passionate about my team, clients, and our local community. I always love to give back wherever I can. My husband often says I give and care too much for my team, however I feel like I have had so many amazing team members over the years that have contributed to the success of the business and also helped me grow as a leader.

What are your top 3 tips for managing people?

I personally think this is actually the hardest part of running a business but when you get the formula right, you will never look back.

1. Ask Questions – Have regular one on one meetings and ask lots of questions. Get to know your team members if they say, “I don’t know” ask again, “If you did know, what would be the answer”. This is probably the most common line I say to my team. Not only does it help them open up but also gets them to start thinking on their own two feet, rather than you telling them the answers all the time.

2. Monkey see, monkey do – Behave and set an example, you need to show common courtesy. If you are running late just because you are the manager or owner, you should be calling your team to let them know because if the role was reversed you would expect the same? Yes? If you talk badly about clients, guess what your staff are probably doing the same. You need to set an example rather than telling your team what you want, show your team what you want.

3. Regular training and meetings – While most business owners are very good at multi-tasking and don’t like being micromanaged, you will find a lot of your team members actually need structure and a lot of it. Having regular meetings and training not only upskills and empowers your team but also helps them feel connected if they feel like they are working towards a bigger goal. Set goals and company values and in every meeting, touch on these and ensure your team member all have their personal targets and goals to work towards a greater goal.

How do you juggle a work-life balance?

I like to set boundaries for my team, for example, text mgs are to be sent before

6pm unless it’s urgent. I used to receive text messages at all hours of the night for little things and it use to drive me mad. I actually love work and I love staying up to all hours working on projects etc. My husband and I have 2 children and my husband owns a very successful solar company. I feel like our businesses are just a part of our life. We spend a lot of time with our children plus they like to come and help us at work after hours. It’s a bonus when they get to have a sneaky swim in the bathhouse pool and spas. We are a very unstructured family, but it works for us. I personally think there is a lot of talk around work-life balance which sometimes sets a false meaning of what that actually means. Personally, if you are happy within yourself and all your family members are the same, you do have a balanced life.

What ways do you like to unwind and get out of “work mode”?

I actually love being in work mode. I’m the happiest when I am working on projects and talking business. However, there has been times when mentally I need a break, so I spend a few days in Hunter Valley at a Retreat, and it always fuels my soul.

Are there any must haves that you love to start your day with?

Well, I don’t drink coffee so that’s not one. I can’t start my day without a fresh shower and a to-do list, I’m a massive list person and don’t feel productive unless my desk is cleaned, and my list is written.

What’s given your business strength over the years?

My determination to not give up and my passion for building a profitable brand. I absolutely love branding and know my brand wouldn’t be so recognised if I didn’t invest in it. Social media has differently been another key driver over the years.

How do you stay strong but agile during these times?

I actually visit Bowen Therapy; it is absolutely amazing, and my healer Mandy has really helped me understand that I can’t control any situation. I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason and it’s the life lessons that are the greatest gift. We can’t control anything or the world around us. It’s important to just be understanding and accepting of all situations, this is how I stay calm and collected.

Any tips to staying motivated when pivoting takes its toll?

Mindset, focus on your mindset. For years I always had terrible thoughts. I would put myself down and just had a negative mindset towards just about everything. It’s taken a lot of work and practice to shift my mindset and I haven’t had any terrible thoughts for years. Sure, doubt likes to take a visit every now and then however, I sit and do an energy clearing (little meditation) and it brings me back. Everyone is different and you just need to find what works best for you, find what fills your soul.

What is one piece of advice that you could offer to others about business? You should never go into business because you want to make more money. You should go into business because you love what you do. You need to understand your why and purpose and connect with it. The reason this is so important is that a lot of businesses have struggled over the past few years. For me we had the bush fires, floods, three-month covid lockdown, more floods, a second covid lockdown and now actually closing because of staff shortages. If you are passionate and have the ability to connect with your purpose, none of these hurdle’s matter. You should still have the fire in your body to keep going as I have. Owning a Business is like riding a roller coast blindfolded, you need to be ready as it is an absolute thrill ride. @thebathhouse_edenspa

Dentists are being inundated with people suffering from dental issues due to teeth grinding. Dr Eranki of Cosmetique Cosmetic Clinics said demand for Botox treatment is soaring.

- Teeth grinding (bruxism) is a huge problem as more people deal with stress and anxiety during the pandemic

- Teeth grinding related dental issues are on the rise

- Many people are moving away from uncomfortable mouth guards and getting botox instead to relax the jaw

- Botox is providing full relief and treatment only takes a few minutes

According to Dr Eranki, botox is helping to solve the issue for many people and deliver the benefit of a slimmer jaw line at the same time.

“We have seen an increase in the number of patients seeking treatment with botox for bruxism,” People have been under prolonged stress in a way that’s never been experienced before, he said.

“If you have bruxism, you may unconsciously clench your teeth when you’re awake (awake bruxism) or clench, gnash or grind them during sleep (sleep bruxism). Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related movement disorder and it can cause serious dental problems including teeth movement, wear and tear, broken teeth, jaw pain, headaches and more.

“Some people opt to wear a mouth guard at night, whilst many are turning to Botox as it not only stops bruxism it also has the added aesthetic benefit of slimming the jawline.”

Why bruxism should be treated?

“Teeth grinding can lead to a number of problems, most seriously, damage to your teeth. But also, it can lead to headaches and neckaches and pain around the jaw area from all the tension,” Dr Eranki said.

“The traditional treatment of bruxism is to wear a mouth guard at night. However, mouth guards are uncomfortable to wear and all they do is protect the teeth, they don’t address all the other side effects which is why so many people are receiving botox instead.”

How does botox treatment work?

“Botox can be used to treat bruxism because it’s injected into the masseter muscles that run down your cheek and is responsible for actions like chewing and opening and closing the jaw. When botox is injected here, it immobilises the muscles and relieves the tension,” Dr Eranki explained.

“Some of the benefits of jaw botox include tension relief in the jaw, a decrease in pain symptoms due to grinding and clenching, and it stops the headaches.” How long does the process take?

“The actual treatment can be done in your lunch hour, usually in less than 30 minutes,” Dr Eranki added.

“Usually, the treatment only needs to be repeated every three to four months.”

Trish and Nicole discussed the rapidly changing aesthetic industry and decided that the best way to move forward and meet the new demands of both practitioners and consumers post-lockdown was with “a more positive and inclusive” business model.

Although Plastic Surgery Hub and Trusted Surgeons both attracted the support of industry practitioners and consumers, Nicole and Trish believe the businesses are no longer needed.

Trish says: “Trusted Surgeons and Plastic Surgery Hub both started out as information sources for consumers considering plastic surgery, and therefore tended to focus on all the things that can go wrong with procedures as that’s what consumers wanted and needed (as there were no other sites providing such information).While we both still believe that consumer awareness of all the things that can go wrong with plastic surgery is critical, the Australian Society of Plastic Surgery and the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) are now actively educating consumers about the associated risks, so at Anybodi Aesthetics we are going to largely focus on the benefits of plastic surgery and other aesthetic procedures.”

Nicole adds: “We believe this more body positive approach better aligns with our personal and professional values..We have both had several cosmetic procedures and have enjoyed and are still enjoying the benefits that they have given us.At Anybodi Aesthetics we want to make sure that other consumers can access similar procedures if they want or need them.”

A study conducted by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) and Access Corporate Group has identified the losers and winners in the international health and wellness space during the pandemic and has predicted exciting growth patterns for 2022.

The research revealed that:

• The wellness economy will grow 60% from 2020-2025, with most segments projected to exceed GDP growth across those years.

• Markets with the highest growth projections (wellness tourism, thermal/ mineral springs and spas) are those that took the greatest hits in 2020.

• Workplace wellness, which suffered during the pandemic, is set to grow with companies taking a more holistic approach than prior to the pandemic.

• The traditional and complementary medicine market, including holistic, indigenous, ancient therapies and products, will see a 7% annual growth from 2020-2025, reaching $583 billion.

• Although personal care and beauty took a big hit, consumer spending is expected to bounce back with a projected 8.1% annual growth rate from 2020-2025.

• Consumers are looking for more medical offerings by spas and wellness businesses. As such, immunotherapy, IV drips, gut microbiome, sleep analysis, oxygen therapy and the like are increasingly showing up on spa menus.

• The widespread realization that self-care is essential for physical and mental health will create many opportunities for the wellness tourism, spa and thermal/mineral springs sectors.

The ABIA (Australian Beauty Industry Awards) which also incorporates the AMIA (Australian Make Up Industry Awards) were launched in 2011 to provide the Australian Beauty and Make Up Industry a much needed and often requested benchmark of excellence in business and creative ability on a state by state basis. 9 COVID-19 SKIN CARE TRENDS THAT ARE HERE TO STAY

Now that COVID-19 vaccines are widely available throughout the world, and shifting mask guidelines have also left many people wanting to put their best face forward. In most instances, fully vaccinated folks no longer need to wear a mask when out in public.

The pandemic certainly changed the way people thought about their skin, and in an article addressed to the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in June 2020, researchers discussed their analysis of search trends on Google to see what patients were interested in. They found that people’s searches for general skin conditions (like acne or eczema), skin cancer, and cosmetic treatments declined during the pandemic. For skin cancer and cosmetic treatments, interest hadn’t yet returned to baseline levels when the study was published. Now that the pandemic has been going on for some time, many people are returning to their regularly scheduled dermatology appointments in search of help with acne, wrinkles, or that much-needed skin cancer check.

Here are the skin-care trends that boardcertified dermatologists are seeing in the time of post COVID-19 — and what they predict will stick around for the years to come.

BOTOX IN THE EYE AREA

If you’re worried that injectables will freeze your face so that people can’t discern your expressions, Dr. Anolik adds that well-done injectables like Botox should allow your smile to come through even if you are wearing a mask. Botox in the crow’s-feet area still allows for skin movement, so people will know you’re flashing a grin. “The main way anyone looks frozen or artificial with Botox is an immobile upper forehead, and that should never be done, with or without wearing a mask,” he says.

BOTOX INJECTIONS AROUND LIPS

TELEMEDICINE AS THE NEW ‘PREDERMATOLOGIST’ APPOINTMENT

Even though part of the face may be covered with a mask for part or all of the day, patients are still looking to smooth lines and wrinkles: “Botox became more popular in the time of mask wearing,” says Robert Anolik, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Laser and Skin Surgery Center in New York City. That’s because the area that your mask isn’t covering — your forehead and eyes — has always remained visible and largely became a focal point, and people requested Botox to reduce crow’s feet.

But eyes still need to be able to show your emotions. You want someone to see your

So, in addition to Botox around the eyes, people are also using the injectable around the mouth to create a more youthful pout, dermatologists like Anolik have observed. “There’s also more interest in using Botox during the facial treatment to soften lip lines and cause ‘lip flips,’ which is when we inject units of Botox at the lip edge, allowing more visibility of the lips themselves,” says Anolik.

Telemedicine was a growing field before COVID-19, but after stay-at-home orders shut things down, it exploded.

“Teledermatolgy is here to stay,” Anolik says. “However, I don’t feel it’s the best place to start — but it is a possible place to start,” he adds, noting that in-person consultations allow dermatologists to better visualize the skin and notice characteristics like skin texture. Consider using your office’s telemedicine platform to diagnose minor rashes and for initial appointments where you might ask “Does XYZ problem look like I need to come in?” he says. It’s best to have skin concerns checked in person so your doctor will be able to see the nuances of the skin bump, rash, or discoloration, but a video appointment can be a smart first step if you’re still wary about going in.

MASKNE’ AND OTHER MASKRELATED SKIN IRRITATION

From “maskne” and rosacea to perioral dermatitis — an acne-like rash around the mouth, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) — a variety of skin woes surfaced when mask mandates were implemented.

From increased interest in experimenting with injectables to treatments for ‘maskne,’ here’s how the coronavirus pandemic is changing how people approach skin care, according to dermatologists.

If you’re still battling these kinds of effects, you’re not alone. Before mask mandates changed for vaccinated individuals, “I truly had 10 people a day who come into my office with one of these problems from wearing a mask — minimum,” says Sapna Palep, MD, the founder of Spring Street Dermatology in New York City.

Increased warmth and humidity within the mask provides an ideal environment for the bacteria that cause acne and for clogged pores, another cause of acne. The heat and humidity also aggravate rosacea or cause irritation that leads to perioral dermatitis. Dr. Palep urges people to stop using oil- or serumbased skin-care products. For instance, if you’re using an anti-aging retinol serum at night, switch to a more pure retinoid gel, like Differin gel 0.1 percent. Stop any retinoid use at the first sign of redness or irritation, and experiment with applying the retinoid less frequently.

If you have a choice, wear masks made of cotton, which is lightweight and breathable. If mask-wearing is triggering rosacea or perioral dermatitis, visit your dermatologist. In the meantime, use mild, gentle products designed for sensitive skin.

Another mask-related woe that’s sticking around: skin redness.

“I’m seeing so much interest in treating skin redness,” says Anolik, adding that he believes masks irritate the skin and led to more redness and visible blood vessels.

Plus, appearing on Zoom from our ongoing virtual offices tends to make people look “paler and pinker,” he says, making patients interested in pursuing a more even tone.

Anolik recommends using hydrating moisturisers that contain hyaluronic acid or ceramides to target irritation. For day-of color correction, green-based concealers or primers can help counteract redness. For a more longterm solution, laser procedures, like a pulsed dye laser or a KTP laser, are other options that Anolik recommends for certain patients. Laser therapy uses an “intense yet gentle” beam of light to destroy visible blood vessels that contribute to redness, explains the American

At least while masking is still being done, the demand for this procedure, which can require 24 to 48 hours of downtime, seems here to stay. “In some ways, there’s a rush to get in while masks are still an option,” Anolik says.

During that downtime, skin is healing, and some people may develop bruising and swelling, he adds. Your doctor will likely ask that you limit physical activity during this time, according to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons.

The good news about wearing a mask (even if you wouldn’t otherwise wear one right now) is that you can go about your low-key daily activities until swelling subsides — and no one will be the wiser.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

When COVID-19 restrictions cleared people’s social calendars, it created an opportunity for patients to get treatments that require some downtime, says Palep. And even as our social schedules begin to fill up again, many people are taking it slowly — and prioritizing procedures that demand a little recovery time.

Radiofrequency microneedling is one of those treatments. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, radiofrequency heats skin to stimulate collagen production, and the microneedlingcauses minor damage to the skin with fine needles, which also promotes collagen. A radiofrequency microneedling treatment combines the two. You may be red for a couple of days or your skin may appear pixelated for up to a week, she says, but the results are worth it. “This addresses everything from texture to pores, wrinkles, scarring, discoloration, and uneven skin tone,” says Palep, adding that these treatments can be safe for all skin types.

Skin Cancer Screenings

If you have bothersome wayward hairs on your upper lip or chin, laser hair removal is an option to permanently remove them. The laser damages the hair follicle, but a series of treatments is needed to stop growth, says the AAD. One drawback is that getting laser hair removal makes skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s often discouraged in the summer months. Laser hair removal emerged as a pandemic trend because patients could easily cover up the area while skin recovered from the procedure, says Palep. The same goes for present day, where masking is still the norm for many people. A mask will add an extra layer of sun protection for lasered facial areas when you’re outdoors and it disguises potential side effects, like redness or minor swelling. You’ll likely need up to six treatments, spaced one month apart (and then one treatment a year as a touch-up), she says, but you may not need to wait until fall to start.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that people with a normal risk of skin cancer get an annual “skin check” exam at the dermatologist (and if you’re at a higher risk of skin cancer, your doctor will advise that you go more often). During the beginning of the pandemic, though, COVID-19 derailed many patients’ schedules, which concerned Anolik: “Routine screening saves lives,” he says. “Given the reduced rate of screenings last year, I worry many of these problems are festering unnoticed.” Now that dermatologists’ offices are increasingly open and extending their hours, those who may have put off skin cancer screenings are trying to catch up. A research letter published in January 2021 in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that the number of skin cancer diagnoses has roughly returned to 2019 baselines, but that a “substantial” backlog of undiagnosed cases remains — so here’s your helpful reminder to make a call and get on back on your dermatologist’s calendar. After all, 99 percent of skin cancers can be cured if caught early, per the SCF.

ACNE IN PERSONS WITH SKINS OF COLOUR

Acne in people with skins of colour is an enigmatic entity. Acne is one of the most common skin conditions for people that have darker skin worldwide. This is possibly due to the fact that the global population is much higher with darker skin than lighter skin.

Considering Asian populations, Hispanic populations, and people of African origin. The skin disorder for these people is a double insult because of the hyperpigmentation that usually accompanies the condition. The hyperpigmentation is caused from scar tissue and is much higher in skins of colour than those with lighter skin because of less pigmentation in lighter skins.

On the subject of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, it is caused by the inflammatory comedonal acne, the inflammation of non-inflammatory acne and the inflammatory lesions that occur and is

more obvious in darker populations.

The studies between the skin colours demonstrate that lighter skins have a higher incidence of severe cystic acne than darker skins do. This means that slight inflammation to darker skin is a high risk for postinflammatory pigmentation.

The skin disorder that darker skins have where there is post-inflammatory pigmentation and is caused by lesions is known as acne hyperpigmented macule. It seems to occur in younger people than it does in older generations, and this is probably caused by frequently picking their acne lesions.

When you look at the demographics and populations of these people, the use of sunscreens is almost a non-event and, there are often high levels of pollution, especially in younger generations that ride scooters and motorcycles. These are all risk factors for PIHP. Often the major concern for these people is the PIHP and not the acne. Many of these people live in countries such as India, Africa, and Asia, where they can purchase without a script topical steroids and depigmenting creams. These products use incorrectly can add to and exasperate an acne skin disorder with increased risk of further hyperpigmentation. Retinoids and salicylic acids work by removing corneocytes from the apical layer of the skin. The user is hoping to

remove any congestion that is in their skin, but the risk is an increase in inflammation.

There is another risk factor pertaining to darker skin that does have nodulocystic acne and that is keloid scarring, a condition that is very hard to remove and treat. This poses another problem that is often seen in darker skin colours.

The Indian populations love to and commonly use hair products that contain oil. With these populations is very common to see acne lesions on the forehead and temple area, the oil tends to gravitate downwards that could cause irritation and inflammation.

The overall manifestations of acne do not significantly differ in darker skin from those with lighter skin. The treatments also generally

remain the same in this population but all the topicals, especially the gel-based ones, that are irritant can result in varying degrees of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is always advisable to treat darker skin people with a little more love and care so that risks of further acne lesions and post-inflammatory pigmentation is reduced.

A very valid reason topicals such as retinoids and benzoyl peroxide should not be used on darker skin is that you cannot see the erythema. The risk of this is that the person tends to overuse the products and without noticing causes irritation that leads to hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

It is possible that early lesion of acne in people with darker skin have a more pronounced

inflammatory hyper-pigmentation risk and that may lead to post-inflammatory pigmentation or what is called acne pigmented macule.

People with darker skin face more challenges when treating their acne. This does not mean that they cannot have treatments and can use products to help with acne. It just means that the consultation needs to be thorough and the treatments and actives that are used will not cause further inflammation and add to the skin disorder they already have. When there is inflammation, melanocyte cells are stimulated to increase more pigment. The pigment then becomes as much an issue as the acne lesions.

Acne is always a challenge regardless of skin colour, when you achieve those results, the challenge is rewarded.

ENSURE YOUR BUSINESS SURVIVES IN 2022 COVID CANCELLATIONS?

Welcome to my first article for 2022, in the Beauty Biz Dermal Section. 2021 whilst both challenging and rewarding, ended spectacularly with the fabulous recognition of 2021 ABIA Best Educator of Year. I couldn’t be prouder to be recognised and rewarded, during one of our toughest eras for our industry and am so thrilled to be educating, inspiring, and motivating you all in the years to come.

It’s a familiar feeling when the receptionist just looks at you horrified, as the phone rings these days… is it yet another covid cancellation? Books aren’t as full as they should be and times are still uncertain, looks like things may drag out further. You must have a strategy in place.

So, what are some of the most cost effective, easiest, and best ways to ensure you can still make a decent profit, with the number of cancellations that occur? There are several, but here are some of my tried and tested methods. After-all, I ran a number of highly successful skin clinics across Melbourne and had the chance to see what worked well during the GFC and helped many clinics stay motivated and inspired via education during the pandemic.

Apart from engaging a salon or clinic coach, which I highly recommend, you can implement the following strategies right now, not only just to survive, but also to thrive long-term:

Create a skin journey for your client

In other words, a treatment plan. Starting from skin prepping with products and selling your clients an LED membership, which offers them unlimited LED treatments a month. We all know, skin that’s prepared properly, responds more efficiently, renders better results, recovers faster, whilst reducing risks and side effects. Following on, skin needling is amazing at preparing the skin as it optimises cell function, down regulates melanocyte stimulating hormone, upregulates interleukin 10 (reduces inflammation) and restores dermal thickness, along with inducing collagen. Making it an amazing skin prepping treatment and segue to other aesthetic treatments, producing exceptionally better results, safely.

Value add & Combine treatments

Anyone who has undertaken any of my courses, knows that I love to combine treatments!

Rather than discounting a treatment, you are far better off offering your client an add-on such as a free enzyme exfoliation, LED, treatment mask, etc - where the perceived value of that treatment may be between $30 - $90, but it doesn’t actually cost you either too much time, effort, or money.

$299, instead of discounting and losing $100 - the client feels like they are getting value for money, and you are achieving a better return plus accelerating results. Win-win! For even better results and returns, you can easily combine aesthetic treatments, on adequately prepared skin. Combining or layering treatments such as IPL, radio frequency, needling, HIFU, laser. This may seem daunting, but performed correctly, delivers remarkable results and even better return on your investments. Cross promote

Often times when performing a service or treatment, therapist’s engage in small talk with their client - which may be nice, although not productive. Asking your client open-ended questions about their skin concerns or pointing out that your clinic offers other services, treatments, or skincare, other than what you are currently performing, ensures your client doesn’t go elsewhere and it also gives you the opportunity to showcase your skill, ability, and other services on your menu. Typically, therapists only focus on what the client has come in for and these other brilliant services are overlooked. So now is the best time to plant the seed, educate your clients and cross-sell yourself - you might be pleasantly surprised that they’re not aware that you offer those “other things”.

Another option to consider, to combat the lost income of cancelled appointments, is to introduce services that offer a higher return per minute, such as HIFU or Plasma Fibroblasting. These services are priced at up to $1500$1800 for 60 minutes sessions. If your hourly target is $250 p/h, then booking just one of these services per day could see you meeting this target easily. Not to mention the opportunity for growth when booking these services

regularly. If your appointment book had 5 HIFU treatments booked in, a few cancelled services

Word of mouth is the best form of advertising, so why not reward both your existing client, as well as the referred one? Just think, if all of your existing and active database/clients referred just one friend each - you could potentially double your database in no time. Simple! If you’re not sure how to create a campaign or buzz around this, again reach out to a business coach to help you. It’s worth every dollar.

Bring a friend for free treatments.

Very different to “refer a friend”, so don’t confuse these. Another quick and effective way to acquire a new client, is “buy a voucher/service and get one free, for a friend”. With Easter and Mother’s Day on the horizon, now is a good time to start promoting these gift vouchers. Ensure you present both gift vouchers in a luxe or pretty manner, so both can be gifted. The terms and conditions on the second one should be limited to a new client and valid for a short duration, with the value being the same as the initial voucher purchased.

You may think giving a $200 or $300 voucher away is substantial, but think of the value of that client if they were to continue to be your client long term.

Ensuring that your business survives and thrives by thinking laterally is essential during these times. Additionally, retaining a client is so much more cost effective than acquiring completely new clients. So, ensure you always work your database and don’t be shy or feel you’ll be rejected if you promote other services that you offer. People want to look good, which makes them feel good. And last but not least, what we provide is not beauty therapy, it’s confidence therapy - which is exactly what people need right now

PRO MAKEUP TIPS TO FOLLOW FOR YOUR EVERYDAY MAKEUP ROUTINE!

FIRST THE SKIN:

Skin prep and skincare routine are two different things. Makeup artists will focus on preparing the skin to receive the makeup application and ensure it will last for the day. We are not focusing on active ingredients such as retinol or acids but the hydrating agents that will create supple and plumped skin. Before a night out you can follow these simple steps to create the perfect canvas:

- Double cleanse and gently exfoliate the skin: avoid any chemical peels or other indepth treatments three days before the event. This would cause the makeup to not adhere properly to the skin. Focus the exfoliation where the skin most often presents with dry patches such as the creases of the nose. If you do not have an exfoliator, I recommend using a bit of hydrating balm (Paw-paw, Baume de rose BY TERRY) to gently push the dead cells away using cotton tips. You can also use this technique on the lips.

- Use a fresh mist or a toner to revitalize the skin. I love using sprays that freshen up the skin and hydrate.

- Apply a hydrating serum. Hyaluronic acids serums are great as they plump the skin without leaving a greasy effect.

- If you have time, use some eyes patches to moisturize and awaken the eyes.

- Apply a nice hydrating cream that can prep the skin for makeup and help the makeup to glide on the application. I love Embryolisse

Lait Creme Concentre as it perfectly prepares the skin for makeup and is very well tolerated by all skin types. I can use it as a primer before applying the foundation. I can also use it as a mask or makeup remover!

FOCUS ON CREATING A NICE COMPLEXION:

Before even thinking of creating eyes or lips, the complexion and the eyebrows must be perfect. This is going to make the difference between average makeup and a high-end look. I prefer using lightweight texture for the foundation, even when I aim to create full coverage. I focus on using correctors and concealers only for the areas that require extra coverage.

The more foundation is applied to the skin, the more touch-ups are needed as the natural oils coming from the skin will create shine and more powder is required to keep the skin mattified. For the concealers, I use cream ones for pigmentation and breakouts, liquid for the under eyes area, where the skin is thin, and an illuminating pen one shade lighter than the complexion on the creases to plump them.

I have a lot of different foundations I love to use but one item I always have

in my purse and my kit is the Touche-eclat from YSL. Shade number 2 suits most of fair complexion and really plumps the creases underneath the eyes. Just apply it on the crease not all over if you have dark circles.

EYEBROWS AND LASHES:

Beauty is in the details! Lashes and eyebrows are going to give the definition to your look.

For the eyebrows, I always start by accentuating the arch and then the beginning, this allows me to open the eyes and give a nice lift to the eyes. For the lashes, I love mixing colour and black mascara. Using a colour mascara on the bottom or just on the tip of the lashes create a subtitle creative touch of colour that you can choose accordingly to the colour of the iris.

If you are a fan of soap brows, you can simply use a glycerin soap and a bit of fixing spray with a clean mascara wand. This product will last you for months and keep your brows in place for hours. (Pears soap)

I have recently been impressed by two Australian owned brands for eyebrows: Garbo and Kelly for their large choice of shades and easy to use tools and True Brow that have a unique product to create a natural-looking eyebrow and restore the natural shape.

USE THE RIGHT PLACEMENT FOR YOUR BLUSH:

Blush draping makes a comeback! Blush draping aims to create a natural flush effect on the skin, and you can place your blush on the cheeks, toward the cheekbones and even give a touch to the bridge of the nose. But it is not for everyone! If you are a bit tired, I recommend not going further than the arch of your eyebrows. Placing the blush at the centre of the cheeks can accentuate dark circles and do the reverse of the expected effect.

I love peachy cream blush and even use a peach colour cream corrector as a blush for a natural effect.

USE CREAM PRODUCTS!

I am a huge fan of cream textures. Cream textures allow me to create a perfect blend and once the products are set with loose translucent powder they stay in place for hours.

For the eyes, I love to use eyeshadow pencils, it’s a two minutes step to create a perfect base that can be intensified with eyeshadow. Another tip I love is using liquid lipstick as an eyeshadow base. Mac cosmetics has a large choice of colours that can be used on eyes and don’t stain the skin.

PLACE A MIRROR UNDER YOUR

Doing eyes makeup is not always easy but with this simple trick, you should even be able to apply false lashes! Simply place a mirror under your chin! That will allow you to see your entire eyelid and will make the makeup application 10 times easier.

SMILE WHEN APPLYING LIPSTICK!

Creating a youthful complexion is a must but it goes the same way when we apply colour to our lips! Overdrawing the bottom of the lips can be quite ageing. Smiling with closed lips when applying lipstick allows you to see the bottom of the lips to follow your natural line.

If you want to give extra volume to the lips, you can simply place a shadow just underneath the bottom lip. To whiten the teeth, I recommend using lipstick that is blue-based. Blue colour brightens the white, the same goes if you are tired and want to open your eyes. You can use a blue pencil on the upper waterline.

Professional makeup artists will agree that we are often asked for makeup advice. Teaching someone a full makeup routine adapted to their features is not a 10-minute process, but there are some tried and tested tips and tricks you can apply to your everyday look!

HOW TO SAFELY REMOVE EYELASH EXTENSIONS AT HOME

(SAVE TIME: THE SHORT VERSION IS DON’T)

But that would be a lie. I’ve been asked this question many times over the years, and I always give the same answer!

Unfortunately, the safest way to remove your eyelash extensions is to have a trained lash stylist do it for you. Otherwise you will need to wait for them to grow out on their own, and even that’s a risk to the health of your natural lashes: the heavy extensions can pull them downwards as they grow.

However, I understand that some people are unable to consider either of these solutions as an option, whether it be due to lockdowns, affordability or time constraints. So, if that’s you, here’s my advice.

Don’t Google any further than this.

You’re here, so congratulations! You don’t need to go any further. I’ll tell you the honest truth right here in this blog.

There are lots of articles and step by step guides available on Google to teach you how to remove your eyelash extensions, but I don’t consider many of these methods safe for your natural lashes at all.

Let’s unpack a couple of them.

The oily method…

You may have read or been told about some methods using steam and oil to soften the lashes and loosen the adhesive.

This could be effective, but it usually takes several attempts and it’s unlikely that you’ll loosen all of the extensions in the first few days, so you’re going to have to deal with your lashes looking gappy and messy anyway. If you only have a few remaining extensions, you can give this a try, but please, please, please: do NOT pick or pull at your lashes in the process. This will break or pull out your natural lashes.

The other issue is that most of the oils that would be able to achieve this task for you are quite heavy, and definitely too heavy for the delicate skin around the eye. It would also be very uncomfortable if you managed to get the oil into your eyes, which is easy to do and can be dangerous, potentially leading to infection. Likelihood of Success Rating: 5/10. There’s

a good chance this won’t work, you’ll pull out your natural lashes, or you’ll have some kind of reaction to putting heavy oils on your eye area.

The pro method…

Some people may suggest that you try to get your hands on some professional-grade eyelash extension adhesive remover.

I cannot stress enough how bad an idea this is.

As a very experienced lash stylist and educator, I personally choose to only use lash adhesive remover on my own clients when it is absolutely necessary.

This is because, even when used by trained professionals, lash adhesive remover can be extremely dangerous. In order to break down adhesive quickly, these removers contain solvents, which are not actually safe for use around the eyes. It’s absolutely essential that the product doesn’t touch the skin or get into the eyes.

I teach my students that if they do have a situation where a client gets lash remover into their eyes, they must be washed thoroughly with water and then sent immediately to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. That’s how dangerous this product can be!

Even if you have the steadiest of hands, it’s virtually impossible to perform a lash removal with this product on yourself, so please, for your own safety, don’t even consider it as an option.

Likelihood of Success Rating: 0/10. Because you’re not even going to try.

So, what can you do?

Sorry to be a negative Nancy – I’m just super passionate about maintaining the health and safety of your eyelashes and your eyes!

This is what I tell clients who really, really want to remove their extensions quickly and by themselves:

Do the opposite of your aftercare advice.

It sounds really simple and silly, I know! We tell you all of these rules so that you can keep

your extensions looking good for as long as possible. If you don’t want to keep them, doesn’t it make sense to do the opposite?

So,

• Use oily makeup removers and creamy cleansers

• Don’t regularly use lash cleanser

• Go for a facial, lounge in a sauna, hang out in a spa and don’t wash your lashes afterwards

• Work out every day and let your sweat chill on your lashes for ages

• Use mascara, gel liners, cream eyeshadows

• Put on loads of eye cream and sleep face down on your pillow!

Likelihood of Success Rating: 8/10. My Aquila adhesive is really good. However, keep in mind that by not looking after your extensions, you’re also not looking after the health of your natural lashes… so don’t be surprised if you get a lash mite infestation or an infection from having dirty lashes.

A final word of warning…

If you’re trying to remove your extensions because you’ve had a reaction, or because you feel like they’re stuck together in clumps and potentially damaging your natural lashes, it’s essential that you ask a professional to remove them, and don’t try any of the above methods yourself.

A reaction doesn’t always mean removal is necessary or even a good idea, so get advice in writing first from your doctor.

Damaging eyelash extensions are often really tricky to remove – I’ve done emergency removals that have taken more than two hours! Unfortunately, poorly-applied lashes also tend to stay on for a long time, and the longer they’re on, the more damage they’ll cause to your natural lashes. It’s in your best interests to have them removed by a lash stylist as soon as you are able to.

Hello 2022… what are we going to do with you!?

Hello and welcome back to another year, and already I see the communication on social media platforms, I hear it in conversations, in fact, I hear it in my own head… 2022, what are we going to do with you, you are not starting the way we all wanted and wished for!

After such a challenging couple of years we wanted it to be different, we wanted to believe that we had been through the worst of it to get to the best of it, we wanted to believe that things around this pandemic would be less stressful, governments would be more organised, and we would be back to ‘some kind of normal’. And then surprise… have you met Omicron? Well, here she is, and she is going to create a lot more chaos… and so it is.

But, come on, what are we going to do? Just keep talking about how bad it all is? No… I suggest that we should do what we know how to do, and that is keep going, we are going to remember that we are stronger than we think, we are going to reconnect with that inner spirit that kept us getting up when we were learning to walk, because we may stumble and fall, and life may pull the rug out from us, but we know that we just don’t sit there, we know how to dance on a shifting carpet and we know that every time we get up we are stronger, we get better, and we learn new skills that will contribute to a strong foundation that we will scaffold from to reach new heights both personally and professionally!

Yes, no waiting for the pandemic to ping off, covid to clear, delta to disappear, omicron to be gone… we are going to muscle up and make the most of the moments we have, finding lightness and laughter in the mess and mayhem and deciding the time in ‘NOW’ to live our best life… doing the best we can with the gift of the time we have on this wonderful planet of ours.

There is a lot of fear in our community at the moment, and understandably so, but we don’t have to let that fear immobilise us, but instead inspire us. Inspire us to take the stage and give our best in every interaction with every client and with every team member knowing that is how we can make a difference in this crazy covid world. Yes, let us remember and know for sure that we can add value to people’s lives with the work we do… one person at a time.

You could lead your team members through a daily gratitude treasure hunt to lift their spirits and shake any negative talk and energy. Have everybody share every morning three things they are grateful for, and then anytime your clients lead you into heavy and negative covid conversations, redirect them into talking about the services you offer, give them a compliment or invite them to talk about what they are grateful for. Your clients will go out, not only have the benefit of your services, but also feeling lighter and happier and that becomes part of the ‘incredible service’ they will talk about. Because they left you not just looking better but feeling better too… and the world needs that right now.

So welcome 2022, I am grateful I got to wake up into a brandnew year, what a gift. A gift of another 365 days, a gift I get to unwrap one day at a time. And as we do the unwrapping there may be gifts that feel a little more like the booby prize and gifts we want a refund on, and other gifts… well we really have nowhere to put them or no use for them… but then there will be gifts that will make us laugh, bring such joy and add so much value to our lives… so we will take the good with the bad, because ultimately the gift is just being here to do the unwrapping, one moment at a time.

We are all in this together, and I am so excited to be doing this year with you all again. Thanks for all that you do and the people whose lives you add value to every day as you open your doors and make the world more beautiful one person at a time. Please know for sure you do make a difference, and don’t play small on that, and I am grateful for all of you!

Let’s grab this year with open arms and give it the respect it deserves… looking forward to sharing, caring, loving, laughing, sparkling and inspiring with you all this year!

Consumers are clearer than ever on what they want from the businesses they buy from. The parallel crises of the climate emergency and the COVID-19 pandemic have thrust environmental and community sustainability into the limelight. Now is the time to become a sustainability leader in your community, and believe me, your clients will thank you for it.

If you didn’t know much about Sustainable Salons, you’d be forgiven for assuming we’re just a fancy version of your curb side yellow recycling bin.

I’m here to tell you that that assumption is wrong. While it’s true that we’re fancier than your yellow bin (or at least we like to think so), here at Sustainable Salons, we’ve got our fingers in about every sustainability and community building pie you can think of.

That’s not to throw shade at the yellow bin. It certainly serves an important purpose and is a great tool in the sustainability toolbox of your average household. It’s just not quite a good enough solution for small businesses like yours.

Firstly, small businesses are not legally required to use a yellow bin, so even if your salon does, there are plenty of others out there whose waste is going directly to landfill unless they can access a good alternative.

The yellow bin also offers close to no transparency about how the waste materials gathered are being used, and there’s minimal positive impact on local communities through this process.

More importantly, it doesn’t add any value to your business, your community, or our collective goal of sustainability for our planet and the people on it.

Okay, so you know we’re fancier, but let me tell you a little bit about how else Sustainable Salons is working towards a better world for us all.

We care about the impact that every single piece of waste coming from a salon has on this earth. For instance, paper waste collected from salons is bundled and sold to local recyclers.

A Sustainable Purpose Makes All The Difference

Those proceeds from recycling are donated to Oz Harvest and Kiwi Harvest and so far, have provided over 169,000 meals to those in need. Just from paper that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.

Our recycling depots employ people underserved by typical employment structures, including many people living with disabilities.

We’ve fixed the issue of sharps disposal in beauty salons, one of the industry’s more prickly problems (pardon the pun). Incorrect sharps disposal is a huge hazard. We certainly don’t want any kids or vulnerable people in the community being pricked by used syringes. We make sure used sharps are disposed of safely and responsibly.

We’ve been on the hunt for new ways to amplify our purpose. One of our proudest achievements is the events we’ve put on across Australia and New Zealand to help people in need access beauty and grooming services. Check out our Sustainable Salons member, Cara from Wild Ginger Beauty in NSW, volunteering her time at one of our community events.

Particularly at a time when people are changing careers or losing jobs, and more people fall beneath the poverty line, this is something we can offer that makes a real and tangible difference. As salon owners and staff, you understand what a difference being well-groomed can make to a person’s self-esteem, let alone to their chances of nailing a job interview.

It’s not just about the impact becoming a Sustainable Salon has on the environment - it’s a great move for your bottom line, too.

The reality is that businesses without a clear purpose are missing out. Consumers are wide awake to the world around them, and they are voting with their dollars. Your clients don’t just want to leave your salon glowing and fresh; they want the environment and their local community to benefit too.

If you want your customers to feel confident in your business, not just in your staff’s abilities and skills but in the values your business upholds, it’s time to jump on the sustainability train.

A stock take on “stuff’

How much stuff do you have? how many pens? pot plants? Cups, glasses? make up brushes? extra stock out the back? towels? cleaning rags? excess toilet paper ( well the toilet paper,” covid currency” might be important ) ,having said that, I bet you have way more than you need of most things, most people do.

Oprah put it beautifully when she said it’s a disease of the climate we are all living in and that it’s called Stuffitis!!.it’s what has happened to us over the last 100 years, where we are all collecting more and more STUFF.

Not only is it cluttering our homes its cluttering our salons too and its slowing efficiency down.

Think about this, when you are looking up a client, in your salon, you can only remember her first name, you type the word Sarah into your salon software and up comes Sarah after Sarah!!, it wastes time right , the clock is ticking while you scan over them all, next type in the name Zara, exactly, quick as a flash you find what you are looking for.

Less is more when it comes to so many things in Business. How often have you been looking for something in your back room and you find things you forgot you even had?

The thing with having excess “Stuff “in your life is what it is doing to you financially.

It can sometimes be the reason you feel like you are earning more every year, yet you don’t seem to have much to show for it?

I watched a program on becoming a minimalist and thought ‘That’s it “ that is why I am not making the progress I feel I should be. Money in ,money out

You can buy a pair of shoes for $60 or $260, and both of them might get worn to death or hardly worn at all.

In 2022 I have decided to make some serious steps towards, a minimalist lifestyle change. For an entire year I will seriously think about everything I own . I am going to ask myself; does it bring me joy? Can I do without it? And if I really do need to have it.

Slowly I will remove at least one item a week for an entire year.

Items from my wardrobe, the kitchen, and every room in my home. I have only been doing this for a month and already I feel mentally lighter and my bank account is slowly changing for the good. Fascinating.

Opportunity shops are full to the brim, there is one near me that has I would say well over 50 pair of size ten denim shorts!!! Have you noticed that there are so many Opp shops now? I think that people don’t feel quite as bad if they gift what they don’t want to a Opp shop rather than it they binned it. It’s still land fill and if we keep buying the factories keep producing and nothing changes including your bank account.

I am determined to stop making impulse decisions, put some boundaries in place to slow myself down and even better stop myself from bringing things into the house that I will only occasionally use. I would also suggest that you get across your money. Make the time to do your personal and your business break even. It is an eye-opening exercise that will get you to understand what is really going on with having way more than you need.

Spend some time to be across what comes into your business and what goes out of your business. I am serious when I say this change and clarity will change your life.

Another place you might want to consider is your salon or clinics lunchroom. Often filled with excess stock, broken equipment, and a whole lot of other clutter. This doesn’t make the space feel special. More focus on making this time out space pleasant would be my suggestion. Show the team how much you value them. Start by removing the physical clutter and it will help you and your team with the mental clutter too.

If it hasn’t been used in 12 months, I’d be making the decision to move it on. Facebook market place is a great way to find another home.

Think about managing without it, then manage without it. Once you have cleared out the clutter think about how this new space might look if it had a choice. What if you had cupboards that were clearly marked as to what you might find inside. Imagine the back room being as inviting as any part of the business. What emotion do you want the lunchroom to have? What would you love to feel when you step out the back?

Why is to that the salon clients get the great space, and the salon team don’t. In my books both are equally important.

These are some of the things that flash across me when I enter a back room that is cluttered. The first thing that springs to mind is “poor time management skills’ the second is “ a procrastinator”

This clutter slows you down, looking for something takes more time than it should because you are never sure of what you do and do not own. Often you have many places that you shove things, that means that you will need to waste time looking in other other 4 places you stash things. The shed, the boot of your car and so on. I know the story all too well.

It is time to put a stop to it, because it is taking up your valuable time.

Everyone is gifted the same amount of time every day and time is the only unrenewable recourse. You won’t ever get today again EVER. Feeling in control gives you piece of mind. For most people the thought of tackling it is too big, this means they never start. I think just break it up into a box a week, or a box a day. A room a week or a room a day. The trick is to “get over your self chatter and just make a start” get a friend to help. Everyone has at least one reasonable friend who will be happy to help you out.

Live in the now , not in the ‘ one day I will’ Stop that, its hanging over your brain making it very difficult for you to get good clear messages from the universe.”

In the words of Arnold the terminator …………”you can do it “ and you certainly can.

The other day I was remembering one of those long car rides as a child.

You know, back in the day, before we had handheld devices, or on-board DVD players, and when you were riding in the car, that’s all you were doing. Riding in the car. Maybe the radio was playing, or Mom or Dad had a tape on (yes, a tape, not a CD or an MP3 player, or Sirius Radio or Spotify - can you guess how old I am?), and there was - time.

Time.

In between the stops for a drive-through meal, or a squabble with a sibling, or yet another ”are we there yet?” there was time to look out the window, see the passing cars, people, trees, cities or fields or seaside … time to day-dream, time to explore ideas, thoughts, images, without any other motivation than the simple joy of imagining.

And maybe even - in those quieter moments - thinking nothing. Just being, just seeing, just moving.

The gentle thrum of the motor merging with the gentle thrum of presence. And sometimes, so naturally, sliding into a sweet car-ride nap. Maybe on my mother’s lap, if she was sitting in the back with me. Heaven.

My dearest mentor once referred to the mind, in its true form, as a “wonderful Exploratorium for love”. To my adult mind, this is almost inconceivable. It’s filled with so many details, some of them important, many of them no longer needed, long past their use-by date, but still making the rounds (and the rounds and the rounds) of my mind. It’s like being stuck in front of a television show I’ve seen hundreds of times and I’d like to turn it off, but I can’t find the remote.

But then I remember just a little bit of my childmind. The soft, open, curious yet relaxed mind of wonder, questions, possibilities and dreams - the mind that enjoyed the endless

car (or bus, or plane) rides. The child-mind that created stories so light and free, there was no heaviness of attachment. As soon as we got to our destination, I popped up and it was on to the next thing. No sticking. No holding back. Just movement.

What does all this have to do with being an entrepreneur?

Everything.

The inspiration that caused you to go out on a limb and start your own business - the sense of possibility, the quality of door after door (in your mind) banging open as you allowed yourself to envision a different world and reality for yourself and your family - has a very similar quality to that child-mind. And those ideas - those startling movements of newness and creativity - they can’t happen when our minds are full all the time.

They can’t happen when there’s always something on TV in the living room of our brains. The still small voice can easily be drowned out by the drone of the internal weather reporter, ceaselessly describing unnecessary details or drawing comparisons with other nearby weather systems (translate: people).

This year, if I wish anything for you and for your business, it’s the gift of simple, soft, emptytime. Time to drop in and listen. Time to lift your head and see. Time to shift your focus from the constant up-close detail to see a little more of your horizon. The horizon for your business, but even more, the horizon for you. Your horizon.

It doesn’t have to take long. 5 minutes without a device can seem like an eternity - and yet 5 minutes of simply available space can take you into a completely new direction that, had you been occupied with Insta, FB or your email, may have been quietly, utterly, missed.

Mornings are a great time for this brief island of quiet connectedness. The freshness of the day and the relative quiet as the world around you is just getting going can be more conducive to stillness.

“But what if I can’t sit still?” No problem. Go for a walk. And leave all your devices behind.

This isn’t meditating, although meditating can be lovely, and helpful. This is more like gentle, unstructured listening. What matters most of all is the quality of your presence. Be warm, be available, be simple. Drop all your intentions and your intelligence. Open the window of your familiar thinking and let your child-mind out to stretch its wings. And now is the perfect time...

A continuous offering of newness is one of the greatest blessings of the natural world. There are cycles upon cycles and every one of them has their own magic. After winter, there is always spring. Every moonless sky is soon (meaning, in approximately 27 days) to be flooded with the light of the full moon. Every new day can feel like the chance to start again, to re-set. And every inhale and exhale can provide the opportunity to let go and relax, when we allow ourselves to.

But a new year - that’s a special cycle. All cultures honor the passing of the old year and the coming of the new (albeit, not all on the same day). We instinctively know the import of this cycle - it’s a much different level than an inhale and an exhale, or the passing of a day. There is more gravitas, more grandeur. More pressure too. Many of us are all too familiar with new year’s resolutions that don’t make it out of the month of January.

But this year, make it sweet, make it easy, make it soft. You’re not trying to be someone else, you are reconnecting with a quieter and more imaginative you. You are leaning into a deeper you, putting the ear of your mind to the quiet, soft mouth of your heart.

You’ll know you’re on the right track if you start to feel happy without a reason.

BUT WHY?

There is a skill in life that is solid in childhood, then for many, it mysteriously fades away. Losing this skill is costing us the opportunity to have more meaningful conversations. It is stopping us from having the best business we can. It is limiting our relationships with our teams and restricting our possibilities with our clients. Have you guessed it? It is simply asking questions.

Remember when you were four? You had and instinctive desire to know everything, there was not an answer that could satisfy your curiosity. Even when something was explained in detail and logically, you always had one more question…but why? Two simple words, however two extremely powerful words.

Questions give you more detail, that detail gives you a greater understanding, then you can then make better decisions with the information you have. How many times have you wished you knew a little more before you acted on something? For me the answer is PLENTY of times!

We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.

My Grandma used to tell me this a lot, probably because I talked too much. Realistically this is every hairdresser I have ever met; it probably comes naturally for you. To be successful in this industry you must love people and be confident to talk to them. Although if you want to take your success to the next level, you need to ask more questions, listen carefully to the responses, then act on what you have learnt.

By the way, I need to throw this out there early, this is not easy to do (well not straight away.) Life is so much easier when you run on autopilot, getting through each day without adding any stress, it is your natural response. Unfortunately, you end up in the same place you started. Throw more questioning into the mix and suddenly you are more innovative, more creative and more willing to implement the changes your life or business needs.

How do you ask more questions? Look at the six spunky salon owners in the picture, get familiar with them, they are your new best friends. Their names are who, what, when, where, why and how. Their names are deliberately different to yours as they are the prompts for you to ask more magical questions.

Asking questions using these words will essentially change the perception people have of you too, it will make them feel more valued. People love to share and will often present that key information you hadn’t yet considered. It also allows them to answer without your thoughts influencing what they say. This is critical when trying to get a variety of ideas.

Can questions framed with these words still be lousy? Absolutely they can, they are not a magic wand for more productive conversations, rather a tool to help you uncover more information. Some of my favourite follow up questions do not use any of these words. “That’s interesting, tell me more about that” or “I’m not sure I understand, could you give me some more detail.”

This article is about your salon, I am not asking you to uncover from people, “what is the meaning of life?” You need to be asking questions for things that require action. Your questions need to be difficult enough to provoke interest yet easy enough for people to want to answer. At the end of the day, you want answers, you just need to make sure you are asking the right questions to get them.

Ask better questions

When considering your clients, the area where improving your questioning will make the most dramatic difference in your salon is during consultation. If you have ever worked with a coach or attended a sales training day, you know that consultation is key to your results.

The word consult simply defined means, to

seek information from someone. How do we get that information? By asking magical questions. Numerous surveys have shown that the one thing clients want more from the stylists is better consultations. How do we give better consultations? Yep, better questions, you need to uncover the good, the bad and the ugly about their hair.

Your doctor is likely a great questioner, they need the information you have in your mind for them to solve your problem, they want descriptions of EVERYTHING. I often tell my clients to be more like their local GP and watch their salon flourish.

A great activity for you and your team is to start asking questions of each other in your team training sessions. Here are some BASIC questions on customer service:

What does good customer service look like?

What does poor customer service look like?

When have I received good customer service? When have I received poor customer service? Based on this, how can we improve our customer service?

There are no right or wrong answers, even on this basic topic. It is thought provoking and brings new ideas to the table. Inquiring about both sides of an issue will give you a better understanding and allow you to make more informed decisions.

What now? Use your new best friends, talk less, listen more and watch yourself flourish with new ideas, innovative concepts and greater creativity.

Well, this isn’t the kind of article I thought I’d be writing to kick off 2022! If you head to the archives to my same submission for this time last year, I thought that the worst of it all was behind us and that the disruptions of quite literal pandemic proportions would have been but a distant memory of sourdough starters and banana bread filling up our Instagram feeds.

But alas, here we are starring down the barrel of another year of dodging delta and clinging to the hope that this will all be over… soon.

How naïve was I to think that with the crossing over of a new year, that so too our troubles would have been left behind with Tiger King and Carol Baskin, but even they look to be making a season two come back and I’m definitely NOT here for it!

I like to think I’m your personal hype girl, your mentor in all things skin and here to pep you up when you’re feeling down but there’s only so much toxic positivity to go around and I’m pretty sure I’ve used all mine up.

So instead of coming to these pages to tell you that “you’ve got this, you’re doing great” I’m here to tell you that actually, not a single one of us have “got this” and were all just doing our darned best.

I’m here to blow some gentle wind in your sails and tell you that even if you accidentally lost your sh*t at the bazillionth client rescheduling their appointment or you snapped at a team member or your completely lost it and bawled your eyes out in front of your team (like… proper ugly cried), or have done all three, that it’s ok!

We’ve all been there, and if not, at some point along this epic marathon we’ve been thrown into, we are going to be. But what I can hand on heart assure you is that you can and will get through this!

If we’ve learnt anything the last two years it is that perfection is an illusion that has a finite limit.

There comes a point where putting on a brave face to get through a rough patch actually becomes a true brave face and brave faces aren’t about being pretty. They’re battle weary, lined, sometimes a bit beaten up because brave-ness comes from doing courageous things and doing courageous things means often doing the things you didn’t think you had the strength for!

What does courage look like? Well aside from tired, battle weary and creased, courage arrives when:

Doing whatever it takes to keep your business boat afloat when there’s a million holes in it. That’s bold, daring and courageous.

Closing your doors and learning a whole new way to serve clients is bold, courageous and brave.

Learning how to do skin consultations virtually is bold, courageous and daring.

Staying up until 1am night after night, setting up an ecommerce arm to your website (when you don’t even understand tech) is courageous, tiring, but still courageous.

Learning how to navigate and hold space for new and strange emotions, yours, your teams and your family’s- that’s brave and courageous.

Letting your team go to fly solo, even though it deeply hurts your heart to do so, is bold and courageous.

Hanging up your beauty apron to pivot into a new career so you can keep your babies clothed and fed is bold and courageous.

Standing up for what you believe in, when the entire world is telling you you’re wrong for believing it, yet you still faithfully hold your place, that my dear friend is bold, courageous, brave and admirable.

Juggling the cash flow, trying to balance the last two cents and deciding who takes priority, that is courageous.

Sitting in your empty, quiet, closed up clinic space wondering what the next step is going to be, that is courageous.

Waking up each day not knowing what each hour will bring, that, my friend is courageous and I know that you are going to make it!

I see you.

Despite facing the biggest challenges many of us have ever felt or been through, the internal optimist in me will always find a silver lining, a lesson, something that make even just a little bit of this all make sense.

And what I’ve seen, and you’ve probably felt it too, is that this experience has bought us beyond superficial chats and into a space of real conversations. Even in a world encouraging deep ravines of disconnect, I have seen and felt deeper yet more simplified human connections and the ‘cosmetic enhancements’ we once placed over our feeling and emotions as a buffer have all come away and we are left with raw, unfiltered, truth.

I’ve noticed as an industry overall, the way we speak to our clients is more honest, more steeped in human-ness than ever before. Even the bigger beauty businesses have become less of an overall faceless brand and more a collective of personalities, people and passion. We’ve been able to speak from the heart and less from the marketing department, the message becoming more personal and connected.

This has only got to be a good thing moving forward.

So, hang in there my friend! Even though most of the time you probably don’t feel like it, you’re going to be ok. You’re doing better than you know and no matter what you are going through, you’re only going THROUGH it! You won’t be there forever.

7 TIPS TO HELP YOUR BUSINESS THRIVE, NOT JUST SURVIVE!

So, how do you become the fittest and rather than living off the land to survive, ensure that you, your team, and your business thrives? We checked in with Deb Farnworth-Wood, an awardwinning serial entrepreneur, boss-lady, founder of the world-leading medi-aesthetic franchise Australian Skin Clinics and now Director of Issada Mineral Cosmetics and Skincare.

1. Make sure your prices meet the real costs of your business

“During this time, it’s important to analyse every treatment cost – including consumables, room overheads, and staff costs – and make sure what you’re charging gives you enough profit”, says Deb

You should make use of your insights and reports, and look at what you’re losing by:

● Unproductive staff

● Free treatments

● Reworks

● Overuse of products

All of these things will erode your profits in a time where every dollar counts.

2. Consider the rent you pay – is it still feasible?

When it comes to renegotiating your lease, Deb shares that there’s probably no better time than now. ‘Landlords won’t want lots of empty shops post COVID. If you do want to renegotiate your rent, be prepared and do the research on your area and flag any other rent decreases that businesses may have been getting around you.’

3. Look objectively at your marketing spend

Have an honest conversation with yourself and ask questions like; Is it giving you a return on investment? Are you retaining clients that come through your door? Do your staff understand that it costs money to acquire a new client and that if they don’t manage that first contact like a pro it’s money down the drain?

Your clients already know what you do, what your services cost, and will most likely have asked Google (and their friends, if they were referred to your business) about you too. So, the only thing you have to do at that first meeting is;

● Demonstrate your professionalism and knowledge

● Present a great salon/clinic that’s clean and appropriate for the treatments you provide

● Build a rapport with the client, get them to like you!

4. Adapt your ways of working

Over time, ways of working change, even when there are written systems you’ve been following for a while. Are staff following your processes or are they cutting corners? According to Deb, this can lead to lost sales opportunities and reduced client satisfaction, so ‘be sure to look into the systems you use and whether they’re still right for your staff and your business’.

5. Keep an eye on the important business stats

‘Monitor your rebooking rates, client retention, and staff booking rates, every day!’ You can use this information to see where you might need to make some changes. Are rebooking rates low, or are clients forgetting to turn up? Try setting up SMS Rebooking and appointment reminders and make use of the other great SMS messages for your business. ‘If your client retention is low, look at your consultation process and consider how you can provide a better experience for your clients, to keep them coming back’, shares Deb.

6. Make sure your staff job descriptions contain performance measures

“It’s not enough to say, “provide excellent customer service and treatments” to your staff; we need more detailed measurement capability, such as individual staff rebooking rates, expected hourly productivity, expected booking %, and financial targets.”

7. Most importantly, you need to get your staff on board

How you present the feedback to your staff, together with training and support, will have a big impact on their job satisfaction and performance. Each staff member will have different strengths, so make sure you take the time to work with each one to set performance, and even career goals.

WHAT EXACTLY IS CULTURE?

It’s that feeling that people are behaving in a way that isn’t quite how we’d like it. So, what exactly is culture?

Well, Put simply, it’s “how things are done around here”. John C Maxwell identifies 3 things that make up culture;

1. Behaviours 2. Symbols 3. Systems

Let’s see.

Behaviours: leaders must DO the right thing. Not just SAY the right thing. If you for instance say “we value work life balance” - and then introduce

a roster where that’s clearly not the case, you might as well not say it...

Symbols: what we spend money on, who gets promoted and why, what happens when values are broken.

For example: A therapist always leaves when she’s done for the day and doesn’t stay and help her team mates. The manager does nothing about it because the therapist is after all the highest performer on the team! The message the rest of the team receives is that we don’t value team work here. All that matters is the $$ value you bring.

Systems: how do we express culture? How do we make it visible? Display what we define our culture as?

As an example, at HÜD every single day our team pops a slack message up for all to see with

1. One thing they’re grateful for, and

2. One win.

It can be their own win or someone else’s win. Or it can be both.

So, I have spent a lot of time lately speaking to business owners about culture. Sometimes it’s easier to recognise when the culture isn’t how you envisioned it than to pinpoint exactly what it is.

The beauty of this is that it’s both a symbol (because we as leaders then highlight the behaviour and sends a message that celebrating each other’s wins and staying grateful for the little things is valued around here) and a process - because we’ve systemised it so it happens automatically, every day. It’s a system.

Was it always like this? No. Definitely not!

One of the things I now see as a blessing but at the time was VERY challenging and confronting, was when one of my team members told me I wasn’t very good at receiving feedback.

She gave me that feedback and my very first thought was LITERALLY “no way I do that!”. After reflecting and talking it through with my coach (how good is a coach!!) I had my AHA moment.

And it was a game changer for me.

I realised I’d missed out on so many opportunities for growth and learning. And if I ever was to build an incredible culture, I needed the team to feel safe enough to give me ALL the feedback - both the good and the bad.

And I made a really conscious effort to become GREAT at receiving feedback.

Which ultimately meant that the team now feels totally safe coming to me with the awkward things as well as the good.

Like someone once said: “if you’re not getting uncomfortable feedback about things you’re missing or not getting right, there isn’t enough psychological safety”.

REWARDING PERFORMANCE VS REWARDING BEHAVIOUR

But what about if you have that one team member who always has an attitude. Always feels superior and brings the vibe down.

So often I hear clinic owners say, “I just can’t pull her up on it because I’m afraid she’s going to leave”.

But my question is, what if she stays??

Here’s a common scenario - and one I’ve experienced myself more than once in my time:

You have one team member who everyone feel a bit icky about. But no one really dare say anything. Because they’re the “money maker”...

That person who steals clients and sales just so they can hit their targets. They rebook clients at all cost with themselves and even if they’re going on leave, will let their clients wait until she’s back to book them in!

This therapist is often wrongly classified as a “great therapist”. A true high achiever.

So, do you reward them? Maybe give them a nice bonus? A pat on the back and a pay raise for great performance?

Oh yep. Rings a bell with many I’m sure. I’ve certainly done it!

What about someone who smashes their rebooking targets week on week in (because they’re a force of nature!) - but then clients cancel their appointments with this therapist consistently? In the eyes of a metric - like rebooking, they’re a “great performer.

But are they actually a high performer or a good employee? A good team member?

Basically, what you’re saying is “we don’t care how you get there as long as you do”. “Don’t tell us the dirty secret as long as you look good on paper”.

“You’re doing great! Here’s a bonus check”!

So, for instance, if your ONLY metric for what’s valued is financial performance - a “if you make $300 an hour, you’re doing great,” then you might be inadvertently reinforcing the wrong symbols.

And how about the fact that many organisations will promote high performers to managerspurely based on their high performance? Never mind that they’re all for themselves and don’t really care to see others succeed as long as they look good.

So, then we all of a sudden have a toxic work environment....

SO, WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TEAM MEMBER ISN’T A GOOD CULTURE FIT?

First of all, check in with your company’s values.

If you haven’t defined them yet, I so encourage you to get them identified and made a part of your culture - how you do everything.

In the meantime, write a list of the types of traits you admire in others and narrow it down to 5. Check in with how your team members’ behaviours are faring against those 5 traits.

If they’re not behaving in a way that sits well with you, take the time to have the conversation!

Many business owners I speak to are either too afraid to have the conversation - and what I often hear is “I down like confrontation”. Or, “What if they leave?”

Well, first of all, why is it a confrontation?

And if they leave due to a conversation around unacceptable behaviour, they’ve done you a favour.

But straight up, it’s simply a conversation around “hey, I noticed you did this the other day and I’m curious as to your thinking. Can we talk about it?”

Once you’ve had the conversation and set the expectations around “this is how we do things here,” get a commitment to change. Then remember you are going to need to check in at least every week for the next month or two, to ensure there’s been a change.

If there hasn’t been a change, then find out what’s holding them back and get another commitment. If they have made a change, make sure to highlight it and thank them for it.

At the end of the day, once a toxic team member leaves, you will be shocked at how quickly the others will step up. I guarantee it.

Don’t forget, the culture of any business is shaped by the worst behaviour the leader is willing to tolerate.

When toxic employees’ negative behaviours are tolerated, it can have a hugely detrimental effect on the company’s culture, decrease collaboration between team members, affect the way customers are treated, lead to good people leaving - and so much more.

People in leadership positions will often look for a quick fix, but it’s not that simple.

It’s easy to blame the hiring process or one individual team member, but unfortunately, the buck stops with you as the person who sits in the leadership seat.

It sucks. But it’s the cold hard truth.

Being committed to building strong culture means investing time, energy and dedication.

And being bold enough to stay strong to your values when finding staff is like finding a bloody needle in a haystack!

It means turning down “the perfect candidate” if they are exceptional at their job but not aligned to your values.

And if you’re in a position where you think things will fall apart because there’s no one out there, I want you to know that I once had more than half my team walk out in a matter of 2 weeks.

And it was the beginning of the rebirth of our culture. I mean, after the tears and the 3 days in bed it was the best thing that ever happened to us!

If you don’t currently have an ideal culture - or you haven’t quite defined it or systemised it - or you don’t know what’s missing, ask your team for their insights.

ARE YOUR REWARD SYSTEMS WORKING?

An integral part of maintaining an engaged and motivated team is rewarding them for their efforts but what may surprise you is that whilst money is a motivator, it’s not the be all and end of all why people work with us!

Many rewards structures in our industry revolve around financial remuneration but research indicates that employees hold feelings of acknowledgement and appreciation for their efforts in a much higher regard.

Meaningful actions, taken by leaders, can boost your employee satisfaction much higher than some extra cash in their pocket; it comes down to uncovering what it is that actually motivates and intrinsically drives them.

The key to building an engaged workforce is putting in place the necessary measurements and reward systems to capture our team’s extrinsic motivators, while also understanding their unique intrinsic drivers. These will come from our own personal desire to meet our 6 human needs (which are certainty, uncertainty/ variety, significance, love/connection, growth, and contribution). Knowing your team members’ number one primary human need driver is essential to have in your tool belt to better understand their intrinsic and extrinsic drivers. For example, if certainty is their number one core need driver, your team members need to feel safe and secure about their future. If it’s significance, they like to be seen, listened to and receive recognition.

Building a business that has meaning, while embodying the purpose and values into the culture to create alignment and connection is key.

Today, we’re going to explore four different styles of reward systems and how they work (and sometimes don’t work) in a salon, spa, or clinic environment.

THE MOTIVATIONAL REWARD SYSTEM

A motivational reward system is based upon rewarding an individual for their efforts if they achieve a certain goal. For example, “if you increase your rebooking rate this month to xxx, I will give you xxx in return”.

Most salon owners follow this formula of rewarding their employees with something physical, most commonly money, in exchange for their peak performance but with it only working for around 20% of people, it’s evident that this method doesn’t always align.

This form of reward system delivers a short-term win or boost in productivity to achieve a particular

target. Once it’s achieved and the exchange has been made, the high that comes from the reward is over. Whilst this method does motivate some people, the large majority of employees would prefer to be compensated in more meaningful and long-term ways.

THE SURPRISE REWARD SYSTEM

The next reward system is one that feels completely out of the blue for the employee where when they achieve something, they’re rewarded as a surprise.

For example, an employee has smashed their retail target for the month and receives a reward in return, exclaiming, “wow, I didn’t expect that!”. Whilst this is an amazing feeling for both parties, it’s important to not do this too often as you run the risk of it becoming an expectation from the individual rather than the intended surprise and delight.

When it turns into a “if I do this, I’ll receive that” mentality, people can become confused or experience mixed messaging as to why they haven’t been rewarded this time around, despite achieving a similar outcome. This devalues the positive reinforcement, so be careful on how frequently you pull this one out.

THE SOCIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT REWARD SYSTEM

The best reward system you can use for your team is social acknowledgment, it is more powerful than the previous two models combined. In fact, studies have shown that employees are willing to depart their current job for one that favours regular acknowledgment so it’s safe to say, it’s more integral to employee satisfaction than you may think.

When designing your employee rewards structure, don’t forget the power of social recognition. It is a powerful tool for raising employee engagement and leaves them feeling fulfilled and empowered to keep performing at this level, not to mention inspiring those around them to follow suit.

We are mammals and when we are acknowledged socially, it gives us what we refer to as ‘social status’, something we all naturally crave as human beings. One of the most powerful forms of recognition you can give to any single one of your team members is social acknowledgement because it meets so many basic human needs and doesn’t cost a cent to do.

THE INTRINSIC REWARD SYSTEM

The first three reward system models are what are known as extrinsic reward systems. This means that the individual is being motivated by

something outside of themselves such as praise, approval, money, or gifts. The final reward system model I am sharing with you today is an intrinsic one; meaning you are doing it because you love it and know the feelings of success and satisfaction associated with it.

Being intrinsically motivated is much easier said than done as nobody can provide you with this kind of motivation other than yourself. It is a lot to expect from your leaders and team as intrinsic reward models essentially say, “I don’t need my leaders to congratulate me, I can do that myself”.

Believe me, these kinds of people are few and far between but as a leader of your business, this is something YOU need to harness otherwise it’s going to be an arduous time as a business owner. If you’re sitting there waiting for someone to tell you how good you are, you might be waiting a very long time...

When it comes to self-acknowledgement, the only person’s opinion that matters are your own.

If you can’t acknowledge yourself authentically, how can I expect someone else to do it? Once you get to the point when you don’t need anyone to tell you how good you are and all you need to do is look yourself in the mirror and say, “I nailed that!”, you’re free. It’s the most powerful place to be and the one to work towards.

Go out of your way to compliment yourself and acknowledge your hard work internally as a form of reward. Getting into the habit of regularly self-acknowledging your efforts doesn’t happen overnight but practicing this every day will soon turn this into a natural habit.

Like every part of your existence, especially business ownership, this should always link back to your purpose and acknowledge the ways you are fulfilling it.

Personal Guarantees … Bank Guarantees … Security Deposits …

What does it all mean?

What are the risks?

Can I negotiate them out of my Lease?

As a regular part of the work we do in representing Tenants in their commercial leasing matters and in getting to know our clients, one of the standard questions we ask is “Do you have a Personal Guarantee as part of your Lease”?

If you don’t know what a Personal Guarantee is or if you don’t know if you have one in your Lease, then be assured, you are not alone! This is quite a common situation, that we hear regularly!

It is not uncommon for a Tenant to just accept that a Personal Guarantee and / or a Bank Guarantee / Security Deposit is a standard clause in all Leases. It is not uncommon for a Tenant to agree to include these in their Lease, without really understanding the real implications and exposure they have, should the security need to be relied upon by the Landlord at some time in the future. Landlords rely on this lack of understanding to extract more security than they really need.

Can guarantees be negotiated? As is the case with most items in a Lease, guarantees are negotiable. We regularly negotiate them out of our clients leases entirely or alternatively, negotiate limitations or tight restrictions on the level of guarantee being provided, as part of our lease negotiations for Tenants. Being able to achieve this, often depends on things like the stability of the business, how long the business has been operating, the Landlords level of desire to have the business as a Tenant, the amount of rent being paid and broader market conditions, but we achieve this all the time where appropriate.

What is a “Personal Guarantee” and what are the risks? In relation to a commercial lease and as the heading suggests, a Personal Guarantee is the Tenant personally providing a legal promise to pay the Landlord for any liability in relation to the Lease. If you have a 5-year Lease with an annual rent of $100,000, you are personally promising to cover the full 5 years rent or $500,000. Items such as makegood expenses (returning the tenancy back to the condition it was in at the start of the Lease) as well as any other associated costs which relate to exiting a tenancy, can add up to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the tenancy and the circumstances surrounding the exit. When you sign a Personal Guarantee, you are personally promising the Landlord that you will also cover all of these costs, in the event of an exit.

What if my Lease is in my personal name? If a Tenant holds the Lease to their premises, in their own personal name, that means they are automatically providing the Landlord with a Personal Guarantee, meaning that any of their other personal assets, also held in their own personal name, such as the family home, are at risk of being sold by the Landlord to fulfill the financial obligations of the Lease, in the event of a default. These guarantees are often unlimited without an expiry date.

What if my Lease is in the name of a company entity? If a Tenant holds the Lease to their premises, in a company entity, it is common for a Landlord to seek Personal Guarantees of the company directors, as the value of the company itself may be lower than the total value of the financial obligations of the Lease, over the full term.

What is a “Bank Guarantee”? A Bank Guarantee is an amount of money which is held by the Tenants bank in the Tenants name, that must remain on deposit for the term of the Lease and must be accessible by the Landlord in the event of a default. The value of the Bank Guarantee is usually 3 - 6 months’ rent, depending on what is negotiated at the time of entering the Lease. In the event of the rent not being paid, the Landlord has the ability to go to the bank and access the money secured by the Bank Guarantee to cover their loss.

What is a “Security Deposit”? A Security Deposit is an agreed amount of money paid to the Landlord by the Tenant, usually 3 - 6 months rent, that is held by the Landlord in one of their bank accounts. It can be accessed by the Landlord for the same purposes as a Bank Guarantee.

The funds of a Security Deposit are held by the Landlord and the funds for a Bank Guarantee stay in the bank account of the Tenant, however, both are accessible by the Landlord when appropriate.

Can I negotiate a Personal Guarantee, Bank Guarantees or Security Deposit?

Personal Guarantees can be negotiated out of a Lease completely, depending on the circumstances and the other items being negotiated at the same time. If a Personal Guarantee is a firm requirement of the Landlord, we will always try to limit the exposure of the guarantee to the value of the lease liability, rather than it being completely unlimited.

Bank Guarantees / Security Deposits can be negotiated too. Typically, a Landlord will seek 3 – 6 months’ rent for a Bank Guarantee or Security Deposit, but we are regularly negotiating these down to 2 – 3 months’ rent, depending on the other items being negotiated at the same time.

What is the best outcome I should be trying to achieve?

The best outcome is to negotiate a Lease that has no Personal Guarantees at all. However, there is sometimes a trade off in achieving this, in the form of a higher Bank Guarantee. For example, offering a Bank Guarantee or Security Deposit worth more than what the Landlord is seeking may be a strategy to remove the need for a Personal Guarantee. Increasing the value of the Bank Guarantee or Security Deposit could be a good outcome, as it eliminates the exposure of the Tenants personal assets and limits the general exposure to a limited amount. One of the strategies we often adopt is to offer a higher bank guarantee value at the start, with a programme for reducing it back to 2 – 3 months in value after an agreed period of time, for the balance of the Lease term.

MAKING THE SHIFT. HOW TO TACKLE THE YEAR AHEAD WITH ONGOING UNCERTAINY!

You made it! 2021 is done and dusted and 2022 is here! But what now? And how do you tackle another 12 months when uncertainty and constant change has been the ongoing theme for the last 2 years?

There’s still a lot of uncertainty in the air and dealing with these uncertainties can cause a level of stress and anxiety; more for some than others. When it comes to change, we aren’t always able to control the outcome, but we can certainly control how we respond to it. That there is called resilience and we all have it! But again, how do we deal with uncertainty?

First off, let it go! The reality is we can’t control everything. Focus on envisioning the best. Afterall, trying to spare ourselves disappointment by thinking how things could go wrong isn’t helping you. In fact, recent research in cognitive behavioural therapy shows that people tend to overestimate the risks and negative consequences that may result from a situation, but this leads to anxiety or even worse, sets us up for failure. Instead, try imagining the best possible scenario, you’ll feel calmer and clearer and help with decision making and boost your odds of success. Spend some time on reflection

and remember, you’ve faced uncertainty before. The fact that you’re here now shows that you are strong enough to make it through. Take the time to reflect on what helped you before, even write it down, it will be handy to read back when your worrisome thoughts begin to kick in. Avoid avoidance. A little uncertainty can be healthy, it activates our fight or flight mode, but when it makes us too anxious it can have the opposite affect and be quite paralysing. Remind yourself that dealing with uncertainty is hard, but there are consequences for not facing it head on. Recognise that there is only so much you can do right now, and that makes you human, not powerless! The way you treat yourself is in your control, so be kind, and immerse yourself in some of my suggestions as a starting point.

1. Mental first aid – think of this as a way to soothe your mind. Just like a first aid kit for physical ailments, we can also create a first aid kit for our mental health, especially when feeling bruised and battered by life. This kit can be more

personalised to your individual needs and can include a variety of things, but what’s important is that this kit provides you with what you need, when you need it. So what are some things that you can include in this kit of yours?

Let’s start with your smartphone. An advantage of using your smartphone as part of your kit is that it’s the one item that you’re most likely to have with you all the time. Create a folder with various apps, but make sure these apps focus on your mental state and ways you can improve it and give yourself a boost when needed. Insight timer is a great one to access meditations, providing an array of subjects as well as choosing a timeframe, so no excuse to not be able to fit some me time in. Headspace is another simple but effective meditation app, and will teach you the life-changing skills of meditation and mindfulness in just a few minutes a day. If meditation isn’t your thing, then try creating a playlist of songs that uplift and inspire you, and make you feel energised. It doesn’t matter what your selection is; this playlist is only for you.

Or perhaps it’s about time to go through your photos and create an album of images, quotes and people that bring you joy. Visualisation is a powerful tool so why not use some of your most loved images to give yourself a boost.

Do you have a notebook and pen handy? If not go out and purchase them and keep them close by so they can be accessed when needed. Extracting whatever is going on in your mind and putting it on paper is a great way to release what may be consuming you or weighing your mind down, but also a great way to jot down ideas when feeling inspired. It could be a to-do list, or perhaps you’re having an internal argument with yourself, whatever thought it may be, writing them down can help release the burden and lighten the mental load. Don’t forget to focus on the good things around you and write these down also. It enables your brain to think of the positives, rather than the negatives, and can actually give your brain a break from the stress.

Essential oils and fragrance can be underestimated when it comes to our mental health but are another great tool to have in that kit. In fact, scent can prove to be a speedy solution because when you inhale a scent it goes straight to your limbic system, which affects your emotion and memory. Have you noticed that sometimes all it takes is a pleasant aroma to instantly change your mood and bring back a fond memory? Try it! (Lynx Africa, oh those high school memories!)

There are so many items to choose from but again, choose what resonates with you.

2. Create stability using effective habits. You may be thinking ‘what makes an effective habit?’ but one thing I can tell you that doesn’t work is rigidity. Let me explain. For those of us that may attend the gym, we may choose to attend gym at the same time each day, forming what we consider a healthy habit. Whilst yes, it’s obvious that going to the gym is in fact a healthy habit, what happens when our routine is disrupted? Perhaps you’ve been caught up at work, or maybe copped a flat tyre on your way. These inconveniences or change in plans are more times than not enough to throw our routine out, resulting in missing that gym class altogether. Now you may be wondering ‘what is the point to this?’ and the point I’m trying to make is if we want to form effective habits that stick, we need to learn how to roll with the punches. Yes, forming stable routines is key to habit formation, but if we really want to form the strongest of habits, learning to roll with the punches teaches us to be flexible when life throws us a curveball. In fact, I’d go as far to say that too much rigidity is the enemy of a good habit! Something for you to ponder…

3. Review your ethics. Think of ethics as the principles that guide our behaviour toward making the best choices and contribute to the common good of all. Ethics are what guide us to tell the truth, help someone in need and keep our promises. When encouraging you to review your ethics, this doesn’t imply that you may have

‘poor’ or ‘bad’ ethics, after all, social psychology research (Stout,2005) shows that only about 4% of the population could be considered ‘bad’, that is, habitually acting in an amoral and antisocial way. A low percentage of the population, yes, however ‘good’ people can still do ‘bad’ things and this is where reviewing your ethics come into play. A good starting point is intention. What exactly are you trying to create from a moral perspective? Sometimes we can be blinded to the ethical aspect of an issue by unconsciously pattern-matching against something in the past, instead of assessing all the facts in that moment. Ask yourself ‘how does this support my values and principles?’ or ‘is this in the best interests of all concerned?’. Now more than ever, is the time to reconnect with our values, understand the flawed nature of being human and build community. Remember that a rising tide floats all boats!

So, are you ready to shift? Do you hold that strong desire to not just survive 2022 but thrive? Whilst we often look to others for answers on how to thrive in life, sometimes we just need space to find them ourselves. These shifts don’t

need to be wild and dramatic, and sometimes change can happen suddenly, with the inevitable curveballs that life throws at us, but wild and dramatic shifts just aren’t sustainable, and the actions we need to take for these kinds of changes can be overwhelming. Focus on pursuing sustainable and consistent growth, both personal and professional and go within. Something that we don’t realise is that we’re hardwired to believe that someone else knows how to live our lives better than we do. This isn’t the case, however what they can provide us with is experience and advice, but ultimately, we have the answers, we have just forgotten. Step up, keep going and make space to find those answers, one action, one shift at a time. It’s time to thrive! I believe in you.

All aboard the marketing train for 2022! On this journey we are stopping through all social media stations. Please ensure your hashtags and targeted specific ads are safely stowed away and sit back, relax and get your head in the game for the trend that is defining success in 2022.

The explosion of competition in many industries and in particular the beauty industry means that your marketing will need new levels of refinement that excite and engage. Your message still needs the fundamentals of building trust with potential clients and followers but using keywords, hashtags, facebook and google ads is not going to be enough to keep up with the leaders or most likely, your competition.

2022 is going to be a year of taking risks with your marketing, investing in your brand and business more than ever and diving deeper into engaging with your clients.

Video is the future of marketing for salons. If you can’t afford a video production team and you’re wanting to get new business, then it’s time throw on your directors hat and get creative.

Google announced that Youtube reaches more 18-49 year olds than any cable TV network and Facebook and Instagram has announced that video content gets 6 – 8 times more engagement than photos or links.

So how do you create good video content and what works to get new clients into your salon?

The days of doing the hard sell approach on social media are becoming old, when potential clients are scrolling through feeds they want to see something that is visually appealing and story driven, something that will engage the senses and create a sense of curiosity.

Before and after video of services is a must and is gaining some of the highest engagement, try adding your personal touch and commentary to these videos when explaining the benefits but don’t forget to explain how you cater for the “needs” of your client with this service.

Pretty pictures are one thing and always have their place, but video gives that sense of “Real Life” which is so powerful in gaining the trust of new clients.

Testimonial videos from clients that love the services and experience they’ve had with you are very powerful, but many salon owners struggle to make the time to get this gold! It’s one of the most powerful marketing tools you can have in your stable. Make time to capture what they loved about the service and how they felt after having it and why it’s an “essential” part of their beauty regime.

Entertaining content that gives a sense of fun and positivity is a good approach and this is gaining a lot of traction and engagement, be selective about what message you are sending so it fits with your brand, projecting personality is great but coupled with professionalism helps reassure clients they are getting the very best experience when they visit you.

Creating video that shows potential clients the space that they will be welcomed in and the treatment room they’ll be relaxing in, this helps to give a sense of security. Clients want the best in experiences when it comes to beauty services, they also want to be taken to that “safe space”.

Professional production is key, it must look clean, inviting, this doesn’t mean you need a huge space with polished concrete halls, hanging gardens and waterfalls, but you do need to take the time to get the styling right (no mess in the background) so it gives an attractive clean, professional appearance that is inviting, builds trust and makes your clients say “book me in!”

You don’t always have to hire a Hollywood film crew to capture the gold either, if you have the budget to do so, that’s fantastic! If you don’t, you just need to understand some basic principles about good lighting, sound and removing any distractions in the background that detract from the focus of the footage you are capturing.

One of the biggest struggles for people when they start making videos is learning about lighting. If we are showing a video of our clients eyes opening after a lash service, we don’t want to be blocking the path of light across the eyes, it will create a shadow, so we won’t be able to show the full potential of our work. Most salons have a ring light or similar but you may want to invest in a spare to help focus ambient light in certain areas of the room when your capturing footage.

Always remember practice makes perfect, we all start somewhere, try and have fun while you are wearing your directors cap and who knows.. you might just become the next Spielberg of the beauty world.

This is a really important step to understand the problems you are solving for them to be able to create a content strategy that really connects with your audience.

Now I want you to be super specific about who they are and what they do in their day to day lives. This really helps you to get clear on their values and why they come to you specifically. Once you know this, you are able to create a strategy that speaks directly to them. You can use it to help you communicate through emails, social media and any other marketing forms.

The next step is to review your top performing

services for the past year. This will give you a really clear indication of why people come to you and what services they love the most. You can then use these as reference points to build any special offers or seasonal packages throughout the year. It allows you to build offerings that will automatically inspire them to book in.

Next, look at your sales history for the past year. When did you have amazing sales and when did it drop off. Can you see any trends in how your business performed, based upon the marketing you did during that time. It’s crucial to reflect on what marketing did well for you in the past year and what didn’t.

The next step is to map out the special events or days throughout the year that you’d like to focus on building your brand awareness. Think Mother’s Day, End of Financial Year, Christmas and any other special occasions that will naturally drive people into your business. Once you have mapped these out, the next step is to add in your seasons. Working with the seasons allows you to adapt to the common problems you may need to solve for your clients, during these environmental changes. Write a list of all the concerns or problems that may pop up for clients during this time. Next, write a list of the positive experiences your clients will have as well. These are all great key points to work into your marketing plan. I then recommend building any promotions or offers into the seasons, so that you’re not having to constantly update or change your offers.

Next create a list of marketing forms you might like to use. Which platform or marketing service generates the most engagement for you from your ideal clients?

Understanding this allows you to focus your main marketing efforts to this form of content, and then converting the content you create into other areas by repurposing the content to other platforms.

For example, your ideal client may be a millennial who loves to spend time on TikTok or Instagram reels. By understanding this, you can allocate your time to investing more time into planning and creating short form video content based around the seasonal objectives you have mapped out for the year. Once the video content is created you can use these across several methods, to showcase your business. By working smarter not harder, you allow yourself to not feel stressed or overwhelmed when it comes to rolling out your marketing.

Once you know what you would like to offer and when, it’s all about bringing it all together to create a list of specific content to move forward with. Each season you will have a list of content prompts, offers and goals to work on. Break them down into your content pillars and have templates ready to go. These could include:

● Inspirational

● Before and Afters for products or services

● Educational (remember to do these in a way that a consumer will be able to understand

and relate to)

● Fun or Entertaining

● Behind the scenes

When you see ideas or inspirational content to re-create for social media or email marketing, put your information into a tracker and refer back to it each month for fresh ideas that won’t require hours of work.

Allocate time each week or month as a team to have some fun and create content based around your marketing plan. Don’t forget to also get your clients and audience involved and ask them what they want to see from you! What would make them stop, open that email or engage with that social media post? What would make them want to click that link and book that appointment right away? Then use automation to allow you to set and forget your marketing.

We overthink, over analyse and end up so overwhelmed, that we don’t end up planning ahead and risk rushing it last minute, just to have something go out. By strategically planning your content, offers and marketing, you’ll feel in control, have a strategy in place when things happen that are out of your control and feel way more freedom to do the things you love!

However, with the increased popularity of social media and the ways you can promote your business with these platforms, some business owners forget about the ‘social’ part of social media and use it only as a free advertising platform but believe me it’s so much more!

Experts have proven that people will spend their money with those they know, like, and trust. But if all you’re doing is posting photos of your product or hyping your service or your signature program, you’re not allowing anyone to know you.
