1. What triggered your interest in pursuing modeling as a hobby? I’ve always considered modeling as a way for people to express themselves in different scenarios. Through the process of modeling, one can explore their own hidden abilities to illustrate without words a persona related to a specific theme.

2. Did being in the fashion industry have any effect on shaping your personality? Definitely! Being in the spotlight exposed me to different life skills such as proper posture, poise, confidence and good communication skills, through the vast association with many different people in the industry.

3. What are the challenges you faced by being in the fashion industry? The intimidation overcomes any person at first when they enter any industry, but with time I learned one of the most inspiring lessons; that each person carries their own beauty, own character and most importantly, their own worth.

4.

How do you describe your style?

I’d have to say I’m drawn to the classical style but I like to add a little twist to it. It has to be something that reflects my personality or how I’m feeling that specific day; something comfortable yet fashionable.

5. What inspires your personal fashion style? It could steam from anything really, as I always taught myself to look beyond the surface, to find inspiration in the smallest and most insignificant details; it could be a character from a certain film that I enjoyed watching or a random person walking down the street.

6.

What motto do you live by?

‘’Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience and if it hurts, it’s probably worth it.’’

6

7. What positive aspects do you find exist in the fashion industry nowadays? The modeling industry has changed a lot in the last couple of years. There are models out there who are breaking stereotypes and pushing boundaries around the world. These models are proving that being their unique selves and embracing the features that others may find unappealing is the true definition of beauty.

8. If there is one thing you would like to change about the fashion industry, what would it be? Today with the huge impact of social media, many ‘’social influencers’’ are getting into the fashion industry (which I encourage of course), however, clients tend to praise or hire people based only on their number of followers on different social media platforms when they should in fact focus on the person's unique style and character.

9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I try not to think about it too much as nothing is guaranteed in life. I always like to reflect on my inner self, to explore and grow from my experiences. I realized that a person carries a treasure of many different passions that one keeps on discovering through life’s journey. One of the hobbies that I’m currently enjoying is singing. the enjoyment and pleasure that I extract from it is a sense of serenity and peace and I’m excited to find out where it might carry me.

10. What advice would you have for young teenagers who would like to get into the fashion industry? It’s a very competitive industry and it is vital to understand that every person is unique and it’s the confidence and character that shines through.

M ay a d a - Fe l i c i a Pa r k e r fashion designer

Interview by Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis Mayada is a women’s modest apparel brand, from Canada. The company empowers the modest woman. Born from a dream of a revert, who struggled to find stylish modest clothes of quality, and wants better for her two young daughters, and all Muslim women. Mayada is much more than a retail and lifestyle brand, but rather a movement aiming to shatter the stereotypes of Muslim women, and change the narrative told on their behalf. They will tell their own authentic story, shatter the glass ceiling, and pave way for all girls to embrace their modesty with pride while they take on the world! Mayada is here to make a difference and shake up the fashion and retail industry, join the movement!

1.

What’s your background in fashion?

I have no formal training in fashion, as I studied psychology in University. But with anything in life, where there is a will, there is a way. I’m self-taught, I have taken Marc Jacob’s, Fashion Design MasterClass, Diane Von Furstenberg’s, Business of Fashion Masterclass, and read and studied from many fashion design/technical design books, as well as textile books.

2. At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion? As far as I can remember I’ve loved fashion and the arts. At 10 or 11 years old, I would look at the magazines and try to sketch the outfits and shoes. It was after I converted to Islam, when my need for modest fashion arose and my love for fashion merged, and Mayada was born.

3. Where do you get your artistic inspiration from? I take inspiration from Canadian forests and waterfalls, different era’s, Pinterest and Instagram.

Moda Dynastie |

19

4. Have you ever felt to push the boundaries of creativity? Absolutely. In our space of modest fashion, we should be creative and design

5.

What is your brand philosophy?

Mayada is modesty, timeless elegance, and challenging the status quo.

6. What skills are important for a fashion designer for a successful career in the industry? Understanding your customers wants and their lifestyle. Be teachable, have an open mind, and take advice from mentors and those already in the industry.

7. Please tell the top three things in your styling kit that are must haves. Statement belts, coordinating hijabs, necklaces, and choosing the right shoes.

8.

How do you measure success?

I measure my success when the customer finds pieces they love. It gives me great satisfaction to see someone happy and fall in love with it.

9. Do you follow some trends for your looks? We design with timeless elegance, but add a flare of on trend looks to the collection.

10. What kind of style you would love to have in your outfits? I love belts, polka dots, tulle, pleats, bows and gathers either along the collar or at the waist.

20

Moda Dynastie |

11.

What fabrics do you use?

I prefer a variety of crepe fabrics, tulle, chiffon and organza.

12. Name some celebrities who have worn your clothes. We will launch our first collection in April 2019 online, so no celebrity endorsements just yet.

18. Have you ever worn something that is totally out of fashion in your life? Out of fashion no, but definitely not age appropriate, like my Grandma section shopping.

19. When is your next collection showcased? Our next collection for Fall & Winter will be showcased in late August.

13. Do you find men and women well-dressed today?

20. What role do you think social media/ influencers play in fashion today?

Yes, I do find men and women well-dressed today. But for those who need modest clothing it is definitely challenging, especially for women. Usually items have to be layered because the item is sleeveless, the neckline too low, or the fabric is too transparent, also slits are another issue.

Social media and influencers play a big role in the fashion industry. Social media is a great tool where brands can connect with the community and use as a platform for greater good. Collaborating with like-minded influencers is a great way to spread brand awareness and your message, rather than the traditional magazine, TV commercials and billboards.

14. What sorts of things do you do to prepare yourself for an upcoming fashion shoot or show? I make many lists of what I must bring, the overall message I want to convey, and a Pinterest board for collecting inspiration.

15. How do you stay updated on current trends? I keep an eye on Instagram, Pinterest, and fashion shows.

16. What is your most memorable fashion moment? Good or Bad. Haha, the most memorable fashion moment for me, was when I was 18 years old and was buying in the Grandma section to find something modest that didn’t need alterations.

17. What do you like and dislike in wearing a high fashion collection? Designer collections are great, but most rarely suite the criteria for someone who dresses modestly, which is really unfortunate. But this is changing, which is so nice to see and be a part of.

N igh a t A h m ad fashion designer

Interview by Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis A doctor by profession, Nighat Ahmad saw a beautiful dream of making fashion accessible to her fellow Muslimah's when her own 5 year old daughter disapproved of her usual black abaya in public. Sensing her un-easiness for the customary garment, Nighat Ahmad was determined to become a role model for her daughters, her community, and build love for their religion and customs in their hearts. She founded her own modest fashion brand in 2014 by the name of ‘The Hijab Lee’. THL is an Indian International modest fashion brand that believes in the co-existence of Faith & Fashion. The brand creates globally applaudable modest attires in trendy colors & contemporary silhouettes for today’s progressive female youth. It’s creations are a unique amalgamation of the Islamic code of female dressing & the current fashion trends. The magnificent Indian hand-embroideries are turned into modern pieces of art by creative manipulations. The Hijab Lee celebrates the Female-Power and aims to empower, uplift and encourage women to believe in their beauty beyond skin and body. With its exuberant, trend-driven designs, THL beckons our young women to be covered & confident, to chase their dreams and not let their modesty come in the way.

1. At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion? I am a doctor by profession and a designer by passion. I have been quite rebellious in my way of dressing since a young age. I decided to be a hijabi a few years back and it happened to be a turning point in my perception of fashion & beauty stereotypes.

2. Where do you get your artistic inspiration from? My source of inspiration is not specific. Sometimes my collections are inspired from current events or occasions, at other times, they are inspired by works of art and popular masterpieces. It’s just a matter of time and whatever grabs the attention of my creative side.

30

Moda Dynastie |

7.

How do you measure success?

We are all in business to make money but the main motive behind me starting The Hijab Lee was to ensure that the young girls of my community, including my Absolutely, yes. With every new project or collection, three daughters, take pride in their faith and the dress there is an inherent push to create something new. It is code that follows it. So I would measure success as the a challenge and involves a lot of risk too but ‘creativity’ more number of lives I can touch and change for better. is boundless, especially in fashion, everyday has to be different, exciting yet coherent.

3. Have you ever felt to push the boundaries of creativity?

4.

What is your brand philosophy?

The Hijab Lee is an Indian International luxury modest fashion brand that believes in the co-existence of Faith & Fashion. The brand creates globally applaudable modest attires in trendy colors & contemporary silhouettes for today’s progressive female youth. Its creations are a unique amalgamation of the Islamic code of female dressing & the current fashion trends. The magnificent Indian handembroideries are turned into modern pieces of art by creative manipulations.

8. Do you follow some trends for your looks?

Yes I do, but as I said, I make sure that I add in my personal touch to it.

9. What kind of style you would love to have in your outfits? I follow trends and love experimenting. As far as it is comfortable and modest, I can wear anything.

The Hijab Lee celebrates the Female-Power and aims to empower, uplift and encourage women to believe in their beauty beyond skin and body. With its exuberant, trend-driven designs, THL beckons our young women to be covered & confident, to chase their dreams and not let their modesty come in the way.

5. What skills are important for a fashion designer for a successful career in the industry? I believe that the most important things for a fashion designer to have a successful career are a good understanding of their customers’ needs & their own personal touch which makes them stand out of the crowd and becomes their brand identity.

6. Please tell the top three things in your styling kit that are must haves. The top three things in my styling kit would be a nice & comfortable scarf (since I do hijab), a trendy pair of footwear that suits my dress and a perfect bag for that time of the day.

31

What fabrics do you use?

At THL, we use fabrics that suit the season and are trending. From linens, crepes to silks and velvets, we use everything that fits the designs well.

11. Name some celebrities who have worn your clothes. The former Femina Miss India World, Sayali Bhagat walked in THL dress on the ramp of Asian Designer Week 2019 in India. Recently, the beautiful influencer from UAE, Tasneem dressed up in a THL jump suit for a private shoot.

12. Do you find men and women well-dressed today? The way a person dresses up is a personal choice and I am no one to judge but speaking of modest fashion, I see a lot of change and awareness among people. They are ready to embrace fashion without compromising on their beliefs.

13. What sorts of things do you do to prepare yourself for an upcoming fashion shoot or show? Our every shoot or show has a story in the background and each element has a role to play. We market ourselves as a brand with beliefs and values which does everything for a reason not just sales.

14. How do you stay updated on current trends? The social media nowadays keeps everyone updated. We follow the renowned fashion magazines, blogs and work on fashion forecasts for first hand informations.

15. What is your most memorable fashion moment? Good or Bad. Once I attended a doctors’ meet in India on an international level along with my husband and I sported a hijab with one of my modest dresses. It was quite a few years back and people were shocked to see someone gloriously wear a hijab at a party. I was appreciated a lot for my styling skills.

32

Moda Dynastie |

16. What do you like and dislike in wearing a high fashion collection? A fashion collection is great to wear since it makes you feel confident and ‘in the league’ but at the same time, you have to spend every second of your time worrying that you don’t spoil or lose it by mistake, especially for a carefree person like me !

17. Have you ever worn something that is totally out of fashion in your life? I belong to Kashmir, a mountain valley region in the north of India. Once I wore the traditional dress from my region called ‘Pheran’ at a wedding in the city and everybody loved it. It’s a loose dress with lots of hand embroidery, a belt and a scarf… it’s just beautiful.

18. When is your next collection showcased? We will be launching our next collection before Ramadan. It will be a ‘Ramadan’Eid’ collection with festive yet light, summery designs.

19. What role do you think social media/ influencers play in fashion today? Social media is the most powerful platform today. It is accessible to everyone, used by everyone and influences everyone. The social media influencers are more like super heroes with loyal fan followings. They have a huge responsibility as people look forward to their recommendations. They are the ones to bridge the gap between brands and customers that suit each other but are not able to find each other.

the Cannes Lions Nominated Series AAGAHI [Karachi, 29th June 2019] SOC Films has released the seventh animated short film from the series “AAGAHI” titled “Forced Marriage [Zabardasti Ki Shaadi]”. Indeed, AAGAHI is a public service campaign with an aim to educate women about their legal rights in Pakistan. The series was earlier nominated at The 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for the Sustainable Development Goals Lions in the Gender Equality category. According to Pakistani law, every girl is free to choose who to marry. In this episode of the series, “Forced Marriage [Zabardasti Ki Shaadi]”, the film describes what can be considered as a forced marriage and highlights existing laws that currently exist to protect women and children from this practice.

AAGAHI is a series of 14 short animated films in Urdu conceptualized, produced and directed by SOC Films, helmed by Two-Time Academy Award Winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, explaining and clarifying the legislations which affect women; and giving an overview of how the legal provisions granted to them may be applied, such as; how to file an FIR, what does the law state on instances of domestic violence, divorce, cyber-crimes and inheritance and what is the procedure for reporting issues like these and who should be approached for help. Each short-film was designed and produced by SOC Films and covered the law, its interpretation and the safety that it provides to the victim. This also included the legislation, as stated in the Pakistan Penal Code, and the various case laws, which have been passed or revised in the recent years. One of Pakistan’s leading actresses, Aamina Sheikh lent her voice for the series. AAGAHI has been produced in collaboration with Women Action Forum Karachi.

1. What’s your background in fashion? My past passion for fashion is the same as today’s fashion. Because fashion is a talent and if you have this talent, you will know what fashion will be in the future.

2. At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion? Since I know myself, fashion has been my only interest.

3. Where do you get your artistic inspiration from? This may sound ridiculous, but for new ones, the idea does not attach any effort looking at some objects I have an idea in my head.

4. Have you ever felt to push the boundaries of creativity? Of course

5. What is your brand philosophy? Present Islam beautifully

6. What skills are important for a fashion designer for a successful career in the industry? Only enthusiasm and talent

7. What kind of style you would love to have in your outfits? I make my Abaya for every taste.

8. What fabrics do you use? In my fabrics, I think about every comfort, it does not fall when worn and does not lose quality when washed. I use only comfortable fabrics.

62

Moda Dynastie |

9. Do you find men and women welldressed today? Most of all I like clothes for men and women in the Emirate style.

10. What sorts of things do you do to prepare yourself for an upcoming fashion shoot or show? I am preparing new ideas. Since I think that the real work is when you bring new ideas.

11. What is your most memorable fashion moment? Good or Bad. Nobody helped me with my work. And during the year I look past in the Dubai Fashion Week and this is a great success for me.

12. What do you like and dislike in wearing a high fashion collection? I like people who present new ideas, but when I see something the same I don’t like it.

13. Have you ever worn something that is totally out of fashion in your life? I don’t like to wear clothes that are in fashion because everyone is starting to wear them. I like my Abaya the most. And not only to me but also to those who wear it.

14. When is your next collection showcased? It depends on my inspiration on for the moment.

The Lipstick Make Up Institute was created to represent the connection between Media and Make Up in a stylish, fashionable and unique way. Our students have an amazing advantage of receiving a foundation to build careers as creative and unique make up artists. The Lipstick Make Up Institute provides and presents a unique and different way of teaching. Why different? The course plan itself is a summary of 25 years of experience a mixture of different techniques that have been tried, corrected and redefined. We not only want to show to our students the different and most effective application techniques but also want to educate them to be precise, quick and practical to gain and maximise their experience and confidence in the industry. Students leave our make up school not only with the qualifications to work in the industry but with enough experience and confidence to work within any Media Production company or solely as freelancers. One major bonus, which will give students a great advantage, is be being part of an environment and atmosphere of a professional working photography studio. Once they step out of the classroom and into the media industry they will have the confidence to work in any situation, as these surroundings are familiar. Our students also have the unique opportunity to frequently assist a professional photographer in the studio environment on model portfolios, corporate shoots, family shoots etc and every scenario that studio environment offers. She started her chosen career at the age of 16 at college whilst studying for her A levels. Her passion and love of the medium took over her love for English and her career began. Photography was now in her blood and she has been grateful to her friends for introducing her to the world of cameras and photography. It is a decision that has taken her life on a path that so far has been an amazing journey with still so much to discover. During her extensive career in media, Yasmin has trained her staff to understand that the two mediums of photography and make up work hand in hand and not only complement each other but for media are a necessity. Understanding the fundamentals of how each one works, results in a perfect combination of achievement. She came to Dubai in September 2012 and opened up a very successful photography studio in Media City. The studio offers the opportunity for the clients to have their hair and make up styled with every photo shoot by professionals and this concept has become extremely popular giving her the opportunity to expand and open up a media/ make up school.

ARTIST SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY releases the third part titled

“CHILD MARRIAGE” from “Shattering the Silence” [Lahore, 11th July 2019] SOC Films, helmed by the two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen ObaidChinoy, releases the third part from the animated series “Shattering the Silence”, a project aimed at creating meaningful dialogue around issues of child abuse.

The third animated short-film from Shattering the Silence, titled “Child Marriage”, is told through the eyes of a young girl, and follows the story of Mina, a child who is pulled out of school and married off at a young age. As the film progresses, we see the physical and mental toll that an early marriage can have on a child bride, and consequently the limited opportunities that lend themselves to women with no proper educational qualifications when marriages don't work out.

Through resilience, determination and awareness, Mina is ultimately able to turn her life around when she approaches Panah - a shelter that not only takes both Mina and her daughter in but gives her vocational training.

An SOC Films initiative, Shattering the Silence is a 4-part animated series, in Urdu, which aims to critically engage audiences, and children specifically, with real-life stories of child abuse and to educate them with the corresponding laws, the resources which can be accessed and the steps which can be taken if they, or any other children they know of, are forced into situations of marriage, labour, trafficking or physical abuse.

HIGH FASH I O N E CL I PS ES T HE H O RSE R ACI N G AT ROYAL AS COT B Y Ange lina K a li Inte r na t io na l f a shion m ode l, Jo ur nalist,

There is only one event in the world where commoners like myself can mingle freely with royalty. And that is Royal Ascot. It is a five day extravaganza of royal patronage, pageantry, socialising, high fashion (and I do believe some horse racing). This is the perfect excuse for women to dress up. Although there is a fairly strict dress code and a hat is obligatory, the atmosphere is relaxed and the onus is on having fun. That’s why fashion often eclipses the horse racing in importance to many of the attendees. People often spend a small fortune on their outfits, and especially on their hats. Some choose to dress to impress whilst others dress up to get noticed. This is because much of the mainstream media and TV coverage is focused on the fashion. Whilst the outfit is important, this is the one special opportunity for the best milliners to show off their creativity. And each year, they never disappoint. From the elegant and refined to the outlandish and jovial, the hats make Royal Ascot such a fashion spectacle. This year I chose an elegant pink pastel outfit by Lacry Couture and a summery hat by House of Charles. It is quite fun to have one’s fashion sense accredited by one’s peers. My hat was voted one of the best hats at Royal Ascot by Harpers Bazaar and one of the best dressed by the Evening Standard. Royal Ascot truly is the best of British who can combine royal pageantry, high society, an elitist sport into such a special occasion that can be enjoyed by everyone who wants to dress up and still have a jolly good time.
