1. Was your mother being an actress the reason why you began a career as an actress or a personal need? My mother told me when I was very young to believe I could do anything. Having your parents support your hopes and dreams is everything. While I was still in high school, I went to a movie set while on vacation with my mother in Mexico, and the whole experience was fascinating to me. From that moment on, I had my heart set on being an actor. My mother encouraged me, yes, but it was my decision and she didn’t try to influence my choice one way or the other.

2. Were you more within the confines of certain roles when you made your debut, or you wanted to take a dive into the uncharted waters of acting? Discovering the journey of the character and the story allows me to explore a world other than my own experience. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life, but it is rewarding to pretend to live through things that you will never experience in real life.

3. What’s your greatest accomplishment as an actress? Playing Brooke for over 32 years seems unbelievable. This role has given me so much and I’m so fortunate. The privilege of coming to work every day and fulfilling my passion to be an actor is priceless. Creating a character like Brooke, who follows her heart, who’s authentic and who doesn’t fake it has been an amazing accomplishment.

4. You are best known for playing Brooke Logan in the CBS daytime show The Bold And The Beautiful. Was it a gut feeling that the show will be a success and you accepted the role? Everyone knew about Bill Bell and his success record with other shows. So there was a lot of excitement and optimism about this new series. We knew it would be a success. But in my mind I gave it around five years. No one could have ever known that 32 years later the series would still be one of the most watched dramas in the world.

5. The role of Brooke has evolved throughout the years, and the writer always pull something out of their caps to make it interesting. But what would be interesting for you to see in this role?

10

Moda Dynastie |

I would love for Brooke to face more adversity and to have bigger challenges to overcome. The series is about love stories and family. Brooke has had more love stories than any other character. Now I would like for Brooke to show that she’s gained some wisdom and savvy. I hope she will take on more of a leadership role and influence other characters. I would like the story to demonstrate that her experience has led her to make good choices when she comes up against adversity.

6. You have been nominated for a Daytime Entertainment Emmy for ‘’Outstanding Supporting Actress’’ in a drama series and a second for ‘’Outstanding Lead Actress’’ in a drama series; how’s that feel to you, the love of your fans? It’s nice to be recognized by your peers and to win awards, but it’s not the main reason we do what we do. The acting itself is its own reward.

7. How difficult is for a working mother to juggle too many things at a time? Is there time for family? I was pregnant three times during the filming of The Bold and the Beautiful. Brad Bell and the production were always great about either hiding my pregnancy (wardrobe, props and camera tricks), writing it in, and giving me time off to give birth and take care of my newborn baby. The show is so family friendly, I’ve been able to bring children, when they were babies and toddlers, to the set. Sometimes they even played Brooke’s fictional children on the show. That was great, because I could be close to them while I was working. Maternity breaks weren’t the only breaks I took. I did some outside TV and film projects, too, and even some much-needed vacations. The production has been pretty flexible overall, so that’s one of the reasons why I’ve stayed for 30 years. I could be a mother and an actress.

8. How is life with your granddaughter now? Usually, parents do more and spend more time with their grandchildren than their children, is this true? It’s delightful to be able to spend time with my grandbaby. She's adorable, sweet and fun. I’m spending time with my daughter and my granddaughter together at home. Sometimes she leaves the baby with us. We baby sit. We play with her toys. Read her stories. Try to put her to bed. We go shopping and buy clothes for her. I’ve always spent a lot of time with my children. It was a priority.

Moda Dynastie |

This is a kind of equation: katherine-Brooke, for me: KatherineWorld Traveller. I’m following you on instagram and I see you traveling most of the time. How do you find time to do all this trips? Do you like traveling? 9.

11

I see you’re actively participating in many sports events. You did the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon in 2014. Do you exercise daily and what advice do you

I love traveling. Thankfully The Bold and the Beautiful shooting schedule has lots of weeks off so I can travel.

I like to push myself to discover new limits. I’m always outdoors. Nature and being active make me happy. I think that’s good advice to give anyone. Stay active and push your body, no matter what your level is.

10. Who is your favorite actor you want to meet and perform together?

16. What’s that attracts you to visit Italy often?

I don’t think like that. I like life to surprise me. Besides, you never know what the reality of working with someone is going to be like. Better to live without too much expectation.

11. If you had to choose one what that would be cinema, theater or television? I wouldn’t want to choose. The work of the actor is the same in the end, no matter what the genre. Things are cyclical. Now all the film actors want to do television.

Italy holds a special place in my heart. I love it there. The the people, the food, the history, the architecture, the fashion. I visit Italy as often as I can for work or pleasure.

17. It’s been quite some time you have been involved into the fashion industry with your own brand of kaftans. How do you get the inspiration? I really like that hippy bohemian style. I love the beach as well. There’s a little Middle Eastern influence in there as well.

18. What kind of fabrics do you use? 12. Of all the roles you have played, name your favorite one. Besides Brooke? One of my favorites was playing bounty hunter "Enona” in “Lonesome Dove”.

13. What sort of acting roles will you be seeking in the future? I’m open to playing any kind of character.

14. You left B&B for a while and went to the jungle. It was something you did for your chosen charity Breakaway From Cancer or to test yourself under harsh conditions in the wilderness? It’s fun to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. I was excited to try to make money for my charity Breakaway from Cancer. That’s really why I did it. But I wasn’t really ready for the physical effects of a lowcalorie diet, eating only rice and beans. I was also really disappointed that I left so soon without winning the money I wanted to donate to my charity. But I’m glad I did it. After these outside projects it's always nice to get back home to the set of The Bold and the Beautiful and Brooke.

15. Also, you spend your days off mountain bike riding, horseback riding and running triathlons.

The kaftans are made mostly with delicate silks and some of them have some great beading too.

19. What are your future plans? I hope to keep pushing my limits. I just want to continue to find joy in life through balancing my pursuits as a philanthropist, actress, mother, partner, daughter, business woman and athlete.

20. What’s your motto in life? True beauty comes from inside, and from having selfesteem. If you take care of your body and surround yourself with positive people, you will have a genuine smile. And when you smile, the world smiles with you.

SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY LAUNCHES LET GIRLS DREAM CAMPAIGN IN COLLABORATION WITH GUCCI’S CHIME FOR CHANGE

[New York, 12th October 2019] On the occasion of International Day of the Girl, Two-time Academy and three-time Emmy Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy launched a campaign with Gucci’s CHIME FOR CHANGE to #LetGirlsDream in support of Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage and Equality Now’s efforts to bring an end to child marriage.

Compelled by this critical global issue, Sharmeen ObaidChinoy has partnered with CHIME FOR CHANGE on her new animated short film, SITARA: LET GIRLS DREAM, about Pari, a young girl whose dream of being a pilot is crushed when she is forced into child marriage. It is the story of 12 million girls around the world who are married off as child brides every year denying them the right to education and an opportunity to fulfil their dreams. In Nigeria, 76% of girls are married before the age of 18. In Central African Republic it’s 68%, in Chad it’s 67% and Bangladesh is 59%. For Pakistan; 21% of girls are married before their 18th birthday and 3% are married before the age of 15 and in the US where 23 states have no minimum age for marriage, over 160,000 children under the age of 18 were married between 2000 and 2010.

To accompany the film and in coordination with Equality Now and Girls Not Brides, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and CHIME FOR CHANGE have launched a campaign around the theme “Let Girls Dream”. At LetGirlsDream. org and through the hashtag #LetGirlsDream, visitors are encouraged to share their dreams and to call on the global community to help break down the barriers that keep so many girls and women from pursuing theirs. Italian fashion designer Alessandro Michele, President and CEO of Gucci Marco Bizzarri, singer and actress Lou Doillon, model and actress Elle Fanning, model and activist Bethann Hardison, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee, CEO of Women Deliver Katja Iversen, actress, model and entrepreneur Neelofa, editor and publisher Elise by Olsen, actress Saoirse Ronan, model and actress Jodie Turner-Smith, musician Alison Wonderland, visual artist John Yuyi, and acid attack survivors from Hothur Foundation, girls and women from mothers2mothers, Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, Lower East Side Girls Club, and many others, have already shared their dreams on the platform.

Written and directed by Sharmeen, SITARA: LET GIRLS DREAM takes the audience on a journey through the old city of Lahore where a fourteen-year old girl, Pari, dreams of becoming a pilot. Her story is told through the perspective of her six-year-old sister Mehr, who is unaware of the traditions and barriers that lay in the path of women from her family. It is a story about the burdens of a family and the impact of a culture where girls are still struggling to fully realize their dreams. SITARA is a silent film [no dialogues] which embodies this struggle. To coincide with International Day of the Girl, Gucci and CHIME FOR CHANGE hosted the premiere of SITARA, followed by a conversation with Obaid-Chinoy, Executive Producers Gloria Steinem and Ariel Wengroff, producer Imke Fehrmann, and composer Laura Karpman, moderated by Kimberly Drew. At LetGirlsDream.org educators globally have the opportunity to request a local screening, discussion materials and activities that encourage girls and young people to share their dreams and inspire one another.

“Young girls everywhere still face considerable hurdles in achieving their dreams. SITARA embodies that struggle; it is the story of Pari, a young girl who dreams of becoming a pilot and is robbed of it. For me, SITARA is more than a film, it is a movement that we want to start across the world, that encourages parents to invest in their girls’ dreams, freeing their daughters from the burdens of early marriage.” said Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who is also a CHIME FOR CHANGE Advisory Board Member along with Sarah Brown [Chair, Global Business Coalition for Education], Leymah Gbowee [Nobel Peace Prize recipient (2011)], Jada Pinkett Smith [Actor, Advocate and Founder, Don't Sell Bodies], Julia Roberts [Actor, Activist and Philanthropist] and Cleo Wade [Artist, poet, and author], to name a few. The music for SITARA has been composed by Emmy Award-Winning composer Laura Karpman. Recorded and mixed at the world’s most famous and iconic studio, Abbey Road studios, Karpman’s score has been paramount in bringing the film’s story and characters to life. The film’s Executive Producers include Gloria Steinem, the iconic women’s rights activist, and Darla Anderson, the Academy Award Winning producer of Coco and Toy Story 3.

[Karachi, 9th October 2019]: Coke Studio is all set to open Season 12 with the hamd, “Wohi Khuda Hai” in the vocals of Atif Aslam. Wohi Khuda Hai will be released on 11th October 2019.

Penned by Muzaffar Warsi, the lyrics of Wohi Khuda Hai are a praise of GOD as the One Creator of a system that runs and maintains an order of the universe in balance and harmony. The piece goes on to describe this in the various experiences of the human connection with the Divine; through the seen and unseen and, ultimately, with one’s heart and soul. A piece that was originally made iconic in the vocals of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Wohi Khuda Hai remains a national favorite, as a composition that has been etched into our cultural framework. It has been sung and covered countless times across the globe, taking on different colors, profoundly impacting audiences with the universal appeal of its poetry. This season at Coke Studio, the rendition presents Atif Aslam in a space that offers an exploration of the essence of the hamd, by witnessing the play of a soundscape that serves the contemplative nature of the verses. Etched into the framework of Pakistan’s cultural memory, Wohi Khuda Hai is an exploration of wonder and awe at the capacity and ability of Creation and a means to reflect on its beauty.

Coke Studio to open Season 12 with “WOHI KHUDA HAI” performed by Atif Aslam!

Moda Dynastie |

For this season, Atif Aslam brings to the canvas of Coke Studio an experimentation of ambient and introspective discovery - once again exploring the melodies hidden in his voice and showcasing his versatility with genres that are new to his repertoire. Reflecting on his life journey, Atif Aslam has said, “I still don’t think I have made it. When I started, for the first few years, I used to think, with fame and money, I’d made it. But after that I asked myself, ‘What have you made? This is all material that you have.’ After that, the real search started. That is when the fun started. Even today, I am caught in that search. I will keep at it, always.”

INTE RVIEW 1.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Larissa an amazing city built by the river Pineios. Filled with history and a rich cultural background. Let's not forget the establishment of Thessaliko Theater which has given the space for so many prominent actors to communicate their art and also the first ancient theater of Larissa located in the city center. Every part of Larissa is also filled with my personal memories. It's a place that I will always return to charge my batteries and meet my loved ones.

2. What did you initially studied and why you chose acting alongside? I studied English Language & Literature at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During my studies, I also attended a lot of acting workshops so as to combine these two big loves of my life. Later, I came to Athens and I got registered to Mary Vogiatzi Traga Drama School. I chose acting simply because it could decode my inner feelings and thoughts more creatively and eloquently than anything else.

3. How long have you been an actress? From where did you get started? I've been acting since 2005 but this whole spiritual path was never linear, it was filled with transitional phases, ups and downs and me trying to figure out what I wanted to do and how to do it. A very difficult path full of self-confrontation yet a very rewarding one in the end. Everything started from Thessaloniki from ''Ora Theater'' whose owner was my most adorable acting teacher Mary Moraitopoulou an amazing and inspirational actress herself with so many accomplishments.

4. What are the strong points an actors should have? I really don't know what works for every actor because it's a very personal matter. For me, it is the intense personal situations I've been through. These are always the sources I'm using while acting or writing. Everything derives from my personal life and my philosophical perceptions. This is what creates my art and makes it rich and multileveled.

5. What kind of roles have you performed throughout your career? I have almost performed everything. From classical comedy and drama plays to modern ones. But I think I am more attracted to modern ones.

Stilvi-Psilopoulou Interview By Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis

27

It was produced for the very first time in Greece. I was the translator, the lead and the line producer of it and it was directed by the very well-known actor Alexandros Stavrou. Next show was ''Prisoners'' by Ignacio Del Moral & Veronica Fernandez where I was also the lead. In the summer I took part in the chorus of '' The Saviors of God - Spiritual Exercises'' by N. Kazantzakis directed and dramatized by Panos Aggelopoulos. This was staged at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. It was such an amazing experience for me,a dream come true and a great honor to have played in this ancient sacred theater. Another show written by Kiki Selioni took me this time abroad to the stage of the Royal Central Theatre in London. I played Lady Macbeth there. Finally I directed ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' by W. Shakespeare at Mavrommati Elementary School and I had so much fun working with all these children and expanding myself creatively into the role of the director. Right now, I'm on the process of writing something new-something I want to try, but I can't disclose much right now.

8. Please tell me a few things about ‘Yard Gal’. ''Yard Gal'' was a milestone for me. The plot:

6. You’ve done quite a number of TV series. Mention some. I starred some years ago in ''Oikogeneiakes Istories'' a very popular and successful TV series with very high ratings. The stories were always very real and I think that this made the audience feel intimate to their content. It was a great experience for me being the lead and I was also very happy for the high ratings. Next, I took part in ''Klemmena Oneira'', a very prominent Greek TV series. There I had a very intriguing role of a double faced corrupted nurse who had the power of influencing people for her own benefit. I really enjoyed that too because this kind of roles are always challenging for the actor. In both TV series, I've worked with very important people and this was the greatest gain for me.

7. In how many theatrical plays have you performed so far? The first theatrical steps were made in Thessaloniki. I was a lead in ''The Butterfly's Evil Spell'' by F.G. Lorca and in ''The Beet and the Devil'' by Yorgos Alisanoglou both staged at Ora Theater. At Parathlasi Theater I played Lady Ann in ''Richard III'' by W. Shakespeare. Later on I moved to Athens where ''Yard Gal'' took place.

Two teenage girls do drugs and prostitute themselves in very violent urban and lonely background. No families around and no safe homes. They only have one another and they are ready to sacrifice their life for each other's sake. They are luben and underground and they don't care and they have come to tell to all these ''good'' and ''respectful'' citizens to fuck off because they are rotten deep down to the core and the have a terrible lack of morals while being so consumed with theirselves and how to take advanatgae of everything. They have come to tell all of us that what matters the most is true love between people, and true friendship. Those high morals these two girls have come in total contrast with their apperance and their lack of manners. They confront the ideas we have about what is really rude or not. It was a play I first read while being a student in the University in Thessaloniki in one of Savvas Patsalidis' theater courses (major theater critic and professor). So when I first read it I simply fell in love with it. It really reminded me of my teenage years and the so strong frienships I had back then. The truth of the play shocked me to my core. I said to myself that one day I wanted to play in it. My dream came true few years later when I moved to Athens. I decided to stage and produce the play by myself. I tried to find it in the bookstores but it was never translated in Greek. Therefore I decided to undergo this procedure too. Christos Moraitis supported me a lot into this step by publishing it.

28

Moda Dynastie |

At the time I had finished translating it they called me to keep a role in ''Klemmena Oneira'' the TV series I have already mentioned above. There I met Alexandros Stavrou and without knowing him personally, I kind of sensed that he would be able to understand the play. We had a scene together so we got to know each other and I told him my idea. He was very enthusiastic and supportive and he even offered to produce it by himself. I was the line producer and I co-starred with Mary Karfaki. The show was a great success and it was extended for a lot more months than we expected it to last due to the great demand of the audience. When the shows ended I thought about a unique way of promoting my Greek translated ''Yard Gal'' book more. I thought that everyone should read it in order to come face to face with the big truth it confronts and not only the theater lovers, so to make it more popular I started taking pictures of it wherever I went. This was a really successful way of catching the attention of a lot of people. This travel book is still continued.

9. What are some of the films you participated in? I started participating in short films. The first one was called ''Nekros Thaftis'' by Rena Harami, then ''6/2'' followed by Maria Stefanidou. The last one was ''Black Boxed'' where I wasn't only starring in it but I have also written and produced it. As for feature films the first participation was in ''The Balland of the Ripped Heart'' by Yannis Oikonomidis. A film that will be on in October. It was a blast working with such an amazing director as Oikonomidis. Another film in which I starred is ‘’Ciao Italia’’ by Giorgos Papatheodorou where I was lucky enough to work with so many inspiring Greek actors like Ilias Logothetis and Elisavet Konstadinidou. ‘’Ciao Italia’’ will be out in September.

10. You have done a short film title called ‘Black Boxed’. Tell us for your involvement to this. This was a film I wrote and produced. I also starred in it. It was an inner urge to create it beacuse I had to communicate my feminist manifesto. It has to do with the dirty game social media and the cosmetic companies play on us, women. They want to make us feel inadequate and non valuable if we have wrinkles, cellulite and all kinds of non - Barbie/ model like features. Women tend to forget who they really are and that beauty lies only in uniqness and imperfection. We are beautiful because we are unique on our own ways, each one of us.

We need to wake up from this emotional roller coaster of wanting to look like Barbie girls of hating our bodies of hating ourselves. We have to put an end to our need of waiting for the likes on Facebook in order to feel valued and accepted. The film was nominated by the Female Filmmakers Festival in L.A. and awarded with special honors by the Artfools Eco-Fashion Film Festival in Greece.

11. If you had to choose over one of the three, theater, cinema and TV, what would be the one do you choose? That's a difficult question because I really like all of them. Each one has their own charm and I want to use all those three means to communicate my art.

12.

What is acting for you?

Acting is the most major and significant way I have to express my inner thoughts and feelings.

Moda Dynastie |

29

13. What’s your acting style? I have attended many workshops on acting techniques but I think the Meisner one was closer to me. Finally, I created my own style which is based on simplicity (less is more) and on the presence of the moment.

14. What has been your greatest accomplishment as an actress? I think that my greatest accomplishments were ''Yard Gal'' and ''Black Boxed'' because they are my creations i.e. my children.

15. What’s your favorite actor and why? What can someone say about the talent of Holly Hunter. She had such a great impact on me when I first watched ''The Piano''. Another one is Aggeliki Papoulia for her simple and at the same time direct acting style.

16. What sort of acting roles will you be seeking in the future? I've always liked roles that depict lumpen personalities, but I also liked comic ones though. I guess I am easily getting bored with something which stands in between.

Where do you get inspiration from?

As people play an important role in my job, I usually get inspired of what give people sense of identity and makes them feel alive. For instance, colour, nature and culture. Regarding culture, I should say my country is very rich on it and mostly I get inspiration from old and beautiful Persian handicrafts and miniature artworks.

What do you like to design?

I would rather to design something which influence people psychologically. Many people believe that Architects can have impact on one's life style but I say fashion design is also forming humans' life style. Combination of nature's colors are good example of it. Each color can project one's feature and interest, they would lift human spirit.

What materials do you use in your designs? I usually use natural materials for my designs like wool and silk.

What is the fashion for you?

I cannot find an exact interpretation for fashion. I suppose nobody can do that. In my mind, fashion is instinctive, projects what people think and derives from their character. In other words, unlike many people, I believe characters make fashion rather than fashion makes characters.

Colors you choose for the 4 elements of nature. Red, Blue, White, Green.

Vassilios: I didn’t know you enjoy such events with horses. I was totally surprised.

Despina: I know but a friend of mine was participated so I found it interesting enough to attend.

Vassilios: What exactly was

this event about? I saw the most beautiful Arabian horses and many studs from around the world but I need to be informed about it.

Despina:

Well, the All Nations Cup is one of the main events in the worldwide Arabian Show Calendar. It is the first leg of the European Triple Crown, including the All Nations Cup, the European Championship and the World Championship in Paris. This is a show not to be missed and so I did. I attended the event in Aachen in Germany.

Vassilios: I read about Arabian horses and I was confused.

Despina: I understand because

it’s something that most people don’t know about it but I can assure that this event changed my attitude through those animals. I didn’t expect that horses can be so gorgeous creatures.

Vassilios:

So next time we need to attend together and, why not, to start horse riding! A new hobby is always a good idea.

EVENT The big fashion events like the international fashion weeks of Paris, London, Milan and New York get all the hype. But the real business is often done at the major fashion trade fairs such as Texworld in Paris, Magic in Las Vegas, MICAM in Milan and Pure London. Hundreds of millions of dollars of business is transacted at the most important fashion trade shows. And the decisions made by the buyers for retail chains, online retailers and department stores at these trade fairs will determine much of the clothes that will be widely available. If you want to know what trends will be in vogue before anyone else or thinking of starting your own fashion business, fashion trade fairs should top the list of things to attend. Having started my own label and akpremier.com e-commerce site recently, I view my attendance at Pure London’s event during 21-23 July as a critical component in pursuing my business. Not only will I have the chance to discuss directly with thousands of buyers even from household names like Harrods, ASOS and John Lewis, but I will also have the opportunity to meet people from the entire supply chain. As Pure London is open to the general public, it is an excellent opportunity to hear the views of potential customers what they think. Remember that it is Your purchasing power that will determine the success or failure of a collection. And I do believe in the old adage: “The customer is king!”

[Karachi, 23rd October 2019]: Coke Studio is all set to release the second episode of Season 12, featuring Billo by Abrar Ul Haq, Saiyaan by Shuja Haider and Rachel Viccaji, and Roshe by Zeb Bangash. This episode of Coke Studio Season 12 will air on 25th October 2019.

Coke Studio to release Episode Two of Season 12 on 25th October 2019

Abrar Ul Haq takes the stage this season in a whirlwind of rap and bhangra, opening a gateway to the past with a remake of the iconic song that started his musical career: Billo. Released in 1995, Billo took the country by storm with its quirky lyrics that talk about a young man’s infatuation with his Billo; a girl who is famed for her beauty, and whose house the young man is determined to visit. The young man declares his intentions of taking a marriage procession to her home and winning her as his bride, cursing everyone and anything that stands in the way of this pursuit. For Abrar, Billo was the song that changed everything. It brought him overnight fame and turned music from a hobby to a lifelong calling. Abrar has been wanting to take this visit into the past, to recreate this memory using the melodies, rhythms and instruments that now populate the world’s musical canvas. Coke Studio’s rendition of Billo stays true to the nostalgia of the tune, offering listeners a space where they can relive a time in which bhangra-pop enlivened Pakistan’s music channels. “Music is spiritual. It comes from within a person. Sound can create such a strong impact; this is something you feel in music. You’ll hear something and get goosebumps. If you’re sad, a song can uplift your mood. In a way, it’s a cure. It has the power to induce nostalgic feelings and has a spiritual side to it that brings you closer to God ... There’s something extraordinary about music.” says Abrar Ul Haq

Shuja Haider teams up with Rachel Viccaji in Saiyaan, a Punjabi ballad calling back to the glorious Lollywood of the 60’s and 70’s. Woven with Punjabi metaphors, the song features a jilted lover who implores their beloved with a passionate plea, coaxing them to return. The sadness of the lyrics is contrasted with a musical arrangement that is almost playful in nature, illustrating the tension between the two characters in the song. The theme of all-consuming love, which is wrapped in visual metaphors inspired by Punjabi folklore, is arranged over a composition that hints at music from the golden era of Pakistan’s film industry. In this process, the singers deliver an ode to the artists of a bygone era, all the while creating a voice of their own.

“Music has given me hope. What is greater than hope? Who knows? If I couldn’t do music, I couldn’t have done anything else. What would I have? Just imagine. I don’t have a formal education. Where would I work? What would I do? Music is the biggest blessing in my life. Music has given me everything.” says Shuja Haider “Music is life. Everything around you is music. In a busy street, or on a quiet roof, if you listen closely, you’ll [hear] different elements of sound and they all have a relationship to each other. There’s always music happening around you. We probably got jealous of the birds sounding so beautiful. People probably wanted to curate those sounds, so they said ok we’re going to create our own music. Somebody starts singing and then someone starts drumming and that’s music.” says Rachel Viccaji. Zeb Bangash returns to Coke Studio this season with a Kashmiri ode to loss: Roshe. The song first caught Zeb’s attention when she came across a video of Ali Saifuddin’s version of it on YouTube. For Zeb, this was

65

the fortunate outcome of an exploration into Kashmiri music that had been sparked when she met a group of Kashmiri students in Delhi, who requested that she perform a song in their native tongue. So began the process, nearly four years ago, of working on the song with house band member Zain Ali, who presented it to Coke Studio this season. For Zeb, this has been an experience of trusting the destiny of a song – that it was meant to happen when the time was right, and when the world was ready for it. The song speaks of love and loss; its poetry was written by the Kashmiri poet Mahjoor, who lived in the early 1900s. Mahjoor was greatly inspired by the verses of Kashmir’s last empress Habba Khatoon – whose own verse has been used in the chorus of this song. Coke Studio’s rendition of Roshe offers an ambient space in which the poetic themes of nostalgia and separation are meant to be contemplated upon. Zeb encapsulates the song’s melancholy feel vocally, while she once again, takes on a language that is new to her repertoire with the meticulousness she is known for. song sung in my voice.” said Zeb Bangash

He is an international, chameleonic and creative music guru from Spain. The entertainment accomplishments that this music business executive has achieved, are truly remarkable. Estanis Figueroa (and many of his alter egos aka Larry Capolla, Satanis, Dani Otero, est4nis) show that a fearless and ingenious mind ... never gets bored! Estanis Figueroa recorded his first EP (as a drummer) at age 17 for the band ASH, that was not signed to PDI Records only because the band was too young and neither member had done the (at the time) mandatory military service in Spain. Besides being the drummer for the band, he also acted as their manager and his work was able to land the young act in reputed magazines like Heavy Rock or RIP and perform in local High Schools (1990 /1991) He studied "Recording Engineering and Album Production" in Los Angeles (1992 / 1993) and worked as an assistant 2nd engineer for Red Zone Studios in Burbank, where Earth Wind & Fire, Kenny G and L.A Guns were regular recording Artists. (1993) Studied "Music Business Certificate Program" at UCLA and by 1995 was already being mentioned and credited in albums by awarded Artists like Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, BabsĂłnicos or 2 Minutos. He worked for a top Latin Artist agency and grabbed experience as an Artist Manager, Record executive producer and concert promoter. With his fast learning and "go-get'em" attitude, by 1996 he was organizing his own tours and shows from Latin bands like Los AutĂŠnticos Decadentes, Todos Tus Muertos at Hollywood legendary clubs like the Troubadour in West Hollywood. Since 1998 and for a couple of years, he was managing, signing and promoting the Mexican Artist TITAN. Under his belt and direction and at age 24, Estanis Figueroa was touring the world as opening act for multi-platinum artist Moby, licensing their songs to commercials in Japan, including their tracks in Oscar nominated movies like "Amores Perros" (IĂąarritu) and getting six figure contracts with Warner Chappell while taking the European Festival circuit by storm as the first ever Latin electronic band to reach such goals. After the world was shaken in Sept 11th, 2001 (not precisely by his 28th birthday on that day) Estanis Figueroa decided to re-invent himself due to the obligated immobilized career that his band TITAN had suffered from the closing of their USA label, Virgin Records America. It was then when he decided to fly to the island of Ibiza, dance club capital of the world. His knowledge acquired through this last years as an electronic music artist manager, landed him a job as a Label manager for the iconic brand PACHA. During this "3-year long weekend" as he refers to it, he was able to produce 8 albums and 2 DVD's with the world's best DJ's and house labels. Also, he organized launch parties in cities like Manila, Zurich or London.

Revisiting the heartache of a loss experienced years ago, Umair Jaswal brings Chal Raha Hoon to Coke Studio Season 12. Written during Umair’s university years, Chal Raha Hoon is a song that flows between grief and hope, speaking of the darkness that follows the end of a relationship. Umair counts the distances that have come between him and the person he loves, sings of the sunlight burning his wounds, declaring that the days have turned to ash. These words are interwoven with resilience: “chal raha hoon” (I am walking onwards), Umair keeps reminding himself. Hidden in Chal Raha Hoon are the lessons that Umair learnt from the experience that inspired it - that life does move on, the sun keeps shining, and one’s pain becomes a source of growth and artistic inspiration. Reaching his audiences eight years after it was first written, Chal Raha Hoon signifies a new direction for Umair, of sharing music with the world that is more personal and comes from a place of vulnerability and honesty. On Coke Studio, Chal Raha Hoon find its voice as a rock ballad, with a musical arrangement designed to complement the shifting mood of its words. “If I want to give one thing to the world with my music, with my art, it is honesty. If one is honest, one’s work will speak for itself. If one is honestly.

If one is honest, one’s work will speak for itself. If one is honest, everything is going to be alright. With my music, I try to spread my truth. If, in one’s heart, one has complete faith that something is their truth, one should express it and people will connect to it.” says Umair Jaswal. Celebrating the rich relationship between music and wedding festivities in our part of the world, Mubarik Mubarik comes to us in the unique hues of the Baloch culture. The lyrics are simple and heartfelt and a mix of two aspects of Balochi poetry and music: haalo and naazek. A song of celebration, the naazek aspect of Mubarik Mubarik praises and celebrates the bride and bridegroom on their wedding day. The song also lives within the haalo genre of Balochi poetry, wherein the word haalo is repeated several times and means ‘come’, inviting listeners to join the festivities. Musically, the song also includes a zahirok, which is the Balochi counterpart of Eastern Classical raags and forms the basis of Balochi music.

“Musc is spiritual.

There’s always music happening around you. We probably got jealous of the birds sounding so beautiful. People probably wanted to curate those sounds, so they said ok we’re going to create our own music. Somebody starts singing and then someone starts drumming and that’s music.” says Rachel Viccaji.

Music has given me everything.” says Shuja Haider. “Music is life. Everything around you is music. In a busy street, or on a quiet roof, if you listen closely, you’ll [hear] different elements of sound and they all have a relationship to each other.

Zeb Bangash returns to Coke Studio this season with a Kashmiri ode to loss: Roshe. The song first caught Zeb’s attention when she came across a video of Ali Saifuddin’s version of it on YouTube. For Zeb, this was the fortunate outcome of an exploration into Kashmiri music that had been sparked when she met a group of Kashmiri students in Delhi, who requested that she perform a song in their native tongue. “I decided to pursue music professionally when I saw how it enables you to connect with people. It’s a beautiful feeling. You can move people; you can talk to them. You sing a song and someone connects to it and you don’t even know about it. That’s really lovely for me. That someone is having their own relationship with a song sung in my voice.” said Zeb Bangash
