cover-story Lea Mehanna, 29, a Lebanese media personality, TV producer, and public figure who works at the top leading Lebanese talk show, produces documentaries tackling fashion, art, music, social issues, and various topics. She has interviewed numerous major local and international figures from several diverse fields and backgrounds, ranging from politics, to art, to music, to fashion, and such. After having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and television from the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Lebanon in 2012, she has worked in every aspect of producing documentaries; starting with filming and conducting the interviews herself, to editing, as well as appearing live on TV. Aside from all that, she has always been passionate about fashion, beauty, as well as the modeling industry, and has modeled for local, as well as international designers, such as Ziad Nakad, Charbel Zoe, Nicolas Jebran, Robert Abi Nader, and many more, including L’Oreal. She was also featured as a brand ambassador with posters all over Europe for an Italian makeup brand, whom she also represented at the Cannes Film Festival, and has landed her first magazine cover at only 19 years of age. She has always considered fashion as more than just fabric and design, but as a practice that gives people the choice to decide who they are and who they want to be; a statement to highlight one’s personality. Her motto has always been: “Is there anything more liberating than having a choice?” Above all that, she considers it to connect us to moments and memories of our existence that shall always be embedded in our histories, and that we will forever be remembered by. Therefore, she has taught herself to look beyond the mere superficial layers, but dive more in depth, to find inspiration in the smallest and simplest of details, that may be insignificant to others, in moments, music, film, beauty, fashion, and even people and places, in order to grow and thrive in life. Thus, she is continuously in search of inspiration by exploring new things, in all these aspects of life she encounters, that would inspire her to further develop her passion for fashion into a reality that would also help others in finding inspiration.

1. What triggered your interest in pursuing modeling as a hobby? I’ve always considered modeling as a way for people to express themselves in different scenarios. Through the process of modeling, one can explore their own hidden abilities to illustrate without words a persona related to a specific theme.
2. Did being in the fashion industry have any effect on shaping your personality? Definitely! Being in the spotlight exposed me to different life skills such as proper posture, poise, confidence and good communication skills, through the vast association with many different people in the industry.
3. What are the challenges you faced by being in the fashion industry? The intimidation overcomes any person at first when they enter any industry, but with time I learned one of the most inspiring lessons; that each person carries their own beauty, own character and most importantly, their own worth.
4.
How do you describe your style?
I’d have to say I’m drawn to the classical style but I like to add a little twist to it. It has to be something that reflects my personality or how I’m feeling that specific day; something comfortable yet fashionable.
5. What inspires your personal fashion style? It could steam from anything really, as I always taught myself to look beyond the surface, to find inspiration in the smallest and most insignificant details; it could be a character from a certain film that I enjoyed watching or a random person walking down the street.
6.
What motto do you live by?
‘’Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay the welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience and if it hurts, it’s probably worth it.’’

7. What positive aspects do you find exist in the fashion industry nowadays? The modeling industry has changed a lot in the last couple of years. There are models out there who are breaking stereotypes and pushing boundaries around the world. These models are proving that being their unique selves and embracing the features that others may find unappealing is the true definition of beauty.
8. If there is one thing you would like to change about the fashion industry, what would it be? Today with the huge impact of social media, many ‘’social influencers’’ are getting into the fashion industry (which I encourage of course), however, clients tend to praise or hire people based only on their number of followers on different social media platforms when they should in fact focus on the person's unique style and character.
9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I try not to think about it too much as nothing is guaranteed in life. I always like to reflect on my inner self, to explore and grow from my experiences. I realized that a person carries a treasure of many different passions that one keeps on discovering through life’s journey. One of the hobbies that I’m currently enjoying is singing. the enjoyment and pleasure that I extract from it is a sense of serenity and peace and I’m excited to find out where it might carry me.
10. What advice would you have for young teenagers who would like to get into the fashion industry? It’s a very competitive industry and it is vital to understand that every person is unique and it’s the confidence and character that shines through.

An Italian Guitarist Treads the Boards in Greece 1. Can you tell us about your background and how you get started in the music industry? I started playing the guitar at the age of 16, when I borrowed my brother's guitar who wasn't a guitarist either.
2. What made you decide to play guitar and who were your early influences? When I listened to my favourite guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen for the first time, he shook my mind. He plays the guitar like a violin, piano and guitar in one. I remember this magical day!!!
3.
What is music for you?
Music for me is like a fairytale, like a beautiful dream I would never wake up again.
4. When did you start playing as a lead guitar? I started to play as a lead guitar from day one, the first lead intro that I played it was Voodoo child by Jimi Hendrix.
5. Why did you choose to start as a lead guitar to famous singers and not to start off your own career? When I decided to play with famous singers I played at the same time with my band, Steve Tesser Project, at different stages.
20
Moda Dynastie |
6. When was the first time you heard of the Greek music scene? When I was around 5 to 6 years old, I went to Greece with my parents on vacation. At that time, I thought of Greek music as only a bouzouki sound. The first singer I saw live was Lavrentis Machairitsas. I was the opening act with my band at his gig and when he saw me playing the guitar, he asked me to be the lead guitar in his band that day.
7.
What do you think of the Greek music?
I think Greek music has the best lyrics in the world because the Greek language is more wordy and rich in vocabulary.
8. Do you remember any of your collaborations with artists? I think my best collaborations are with Machairitsas, Savvopoulos, Dalaras, Kotsiras and Cucciolo one of the bests drummer in the world, I played with him in Italy on lives and CDs.
9. Have you written or perform your own songs in front of an audience? No, I'll never play in front of an audience, I decide to play for my feelings. I never thought of becoming famous with music, and If the people like my music... well done, It's my pleasure.
10.
What are some of your own songs?
I really love instrumental music, I like one day to compose music for a film. My first album has a lots of instrumental songs: "Μπλε μάτια" transl. ‘’Blue Eyes’’, ‘’Hypnosis’’, but I like a lot the song "Let Go". The second CD is more for radio broadcasting. I like The songs : ‘’Guardian Angel’’, ‘’Δίχως Πρόσωπο Γυρνούσα’’ transl. ‘’Going Around With No Face’’, and ‘’My Life’’.
11. What are your songs you are proud of?
Maybe the song "Μπλε Μάτια" transl. ‘’Blue Eyes’’ is an instrumental song. I composed this song the first time I visited Athens overlooking the sea... Greece is magic!
12. Do you have any particular memories of working with other musicians? Every concert for me is a particular memory because I love my job, music is my life. Maybe when I played the first time at Kallimarmaron Stadium in Athens in front of 50,000 people... my hands were shaking, again, the second time with the same people after 5 years at the same place, it was a lovely and a more relaxed concert.
13. Do you have a new release coming out soon? Yes, I have started recording my 3rd CD, which includes a lot of songs with classical and electric guitar. I love this sound together, this sound makes me dream.

event [Lahore: 20th May 2019]: Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac presents ‘The Seeming Endless Path of Memory’; an exhibition of international award winning artist Imran Qureshi’s new work, in Paris, France. Imran Qureshi’s practice is rooted in the tradition of 16th century Mughal miniature art, encompassing figurative and abstract works on paper, painting and site-specific installation. Indeed, the exhibition title, The Seeming Endless Path of Memory, along with the titles of the works on display, echo the words of Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1911-1984) which are prevailing throughout Qureshi’s work. They reveal various social and cultural connotations, and subtly reflect the threat of violence as a continuous motif. Resonating throughout the exhibition is the artist’s exploration of the infinite through the figure of the fold: the screen-like structure of his panel painting with dark layers of red or blue gradually transforming into light gold, the subtle changes of tonality appearing as one continuous course of action. Elsewhere, Qureshi is drawing upon the tradition of action painting by welcoming gravity and improvisation into the artistic process: through direct physical engagement with the canvas, the act of painting becomes a performative part of the painting’s expression. Throughout Qureshi’s practice, the artist reflects on the symbolic meaning of numbers. The exhibition is further featuring a prominent series of miniature paintings depicting the Story of Two through finely painted trees that show a subtle unity and separation, akin to arteries of life juxtaposed against the self-portraits taking position of sole observer. In various works throughout this exhibition the artist is illustrating the historical idea of ‘heaven’ in opposition to violence and nature, an idea that proves crucial in the understanding of Imran Qureshi’s artistic universe. Imran Qureshi’s works are modulated through a socio-political reflection on the precariousness and inherent violence of the contemporary world. Ultimately, whether presented in large-scale or in miniature formats, his works tend towards an aesthetic, religious and spiritual inquiry on the proximity of creation and destruction and recreation in all aspects of life - engaging the viewer on both a visceral and spiritual level.

event LAHORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE JOINS HANDS WITH
THE COMMISSIONER’S OFFICE LAHORE AND THE LAHORE BIENNALE FOUNDATION [Lahore, 4th June 2019]: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce has joined hands with the Commissioner's Office Lahore and the Lahore Biennale foundation to play a greater role in the Afforestation Lahore movement. In a meeting today, the LCCI President declared the donation of 100,000 plants and continued support for Afforestation Lahore’s growing movement. Afforestation Lahore is the result of a partnership between the Commissioner’s Office Lahore, the Lahore Biennale Foundation and other philanthropic organisations, as part of the ‘Clean and Green Pakistan’ initiative. The initiative has created a consortium of NGOs and CSOs of Lahore to take ownership of this mission. The project goal is to supplement the existing measures undertaken by the government to reduce carbon emission by implementing a plantation drive that would in turn counteract the 75% loss in tree coverage in Lahore over the last 20 years.
Present at the meeting were Almas Hyder, President LCCI, Muhammad Mujtaba Piracha, Commissioner Lahore, members of Civil Society and Government; they helped spearhead the initiative alongside Qudsia Rahim, Executive Director of the Lahore Biennale Foundation, Attiya Noon, Lahore Conservation Society, Irteza Ubaid, Global Shapers, Chairman, Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), and the Forest Department. With the additional support of the LCCI and the continued support of its partners the Afforestation Lahore Movement hopes to continue to grow and meet its ambitious targets to reduce pollution and increase tree coverage in the city of Lahore.

Nargiz Shakhbazi fashion designer
Interview by Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis With no compromise in Fabric, Shakhbazi is a brand of Innovation & Creativity for Fashion Lovers. The Modern Outfit Brand “Shakhbazi” was founded 5 years ago & since then it has gone through various innovative changes both in style & fabric. In the early years “Shakhbazi” brand used many textiles from which it was possible to cut and craft, they have altered old things giving them a new look and have also used interior textiles.
1.
What’s your background in fashion?
I have been doing fashion for 5 years. I work on my own brand Nargiz Shahbazi.
2. At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion? Before I created my brand, my passion for fashion consisted only in collecting old vintage fabrics and from time to time from these fabrics I created outfits for myself.
3. Where do you get your artistic inspiration from? I take inspiration everywhere. I like old movies very much especially Italian cinema. I study the history of fashion, I like the costumes in the movies. Everything that gives me an impulse inspires me.
4. have you ever felt to push the boundaries of creativity? Every time I like to find new facets for creativity, to come up with something that is not suitable for work. This is a creative process and it is very unexpected.
5.
What is your brand philosophy?
The philosophy of my brand is - clothing should emphasize individuality, it is only an addition.
6. What skills are important for a fashion designer for a successful career in the industry? The most important thing is to love your job, not to be afraid to take risks, to be flexible and organized.
7.
How do you measure success?
Success is recognition of brand and its merchantability out of trends.
8. Do you follow some trends for your looks? If this is in tune with what I do then yes, we can be in trend.
9.
What fabrics do you use?
We try to work-use natural fabrics or at least use them on the lining garments.

10. Name some celebrities who have worn your clothes. Mainly this is people who are popular in my country.
11. Do you find men and women well-dressed today? Being well dressed and being stylish is not always the same thing. There are a lot of people who are just well dressed but so few stylish men and women.
12. What sorts of things do you do to prepare yourself for an upcoming fashion shoot or show? Preparing for the show and photo shoot is always a planned and serious process. This is a team work and there is always a need to be organized.
13. How do you stay updated on current trends? We usually follow trends on the main fashionable online platforms.
14. What is your most memorable fashion moment? Good or Bad. The most memorable moment was on the "modest fashion week" when we watched our show behind the scene.
15. What do you like and dislike in wearing a high fashion collection? I like more wearable things from couturiers, who don't vividly express imagination.
16. Have you ever worn something that is totally out of fashion in your life? Maybe someday I wore something like that but now I can't remember.
17. When is your next collection showcased? Soon, we will start work on the next collection. In the meantime, we come to life after "modest fashion week".
18. What role do you think social media/ influencers play in fashion today? In modern society internet is a large part of our life, social networks and work with them plays an important role in brand awareness and promotion. This cannot be ignored and we should be maximally involved in this process.

“Shatteri ng t h e S i l ence ” [Lahore, 18th May 2019] SOC Films, helmed by the twotime Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, announces the launch of their latest animated series “Shattering the Silence”, which focuses on raising awareness about social issues faced by children in Pakistan today. An SOC Films initiative, the 4-part animated series is a social awareness campaign, in Urdu, which aims to critically engage audiences, and children specifically, with real-life stories of child abuse and to educate them with the corresponding laws, the resources which can be accessed and the steps which can be taken if they, or any other children they know of, are forced into situations of marriage, labour, trafficking or physical abuse. The first animated short-film from Shattering the Silence is titled “Cheena Hua Bachpan” which explores trafficking through the widely occurring but largely overlooked issue of children working as domestic labourers. The story is told through the character of a young girl trafficked into working at an influential family's home, where she was deprived of basic human rights such as education. The film explores how and why this situation came to be legally defined as trafficking, as well recounting the emotional, mental and physical effects of working long hours as a domestic labourer, and the resources and laws which ultimately protected and safeguarded her well-being. Each short-film has been conceptualized, produced and directed by SOC Films and will be between 2 to 3 minutes long.

arts Pavilion of Pakistan at the 58th International Ar t Exhibition –
La Bien n a l e d i Ve n ez i a The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) and Foundation Art Divvy are delighted to present Manora Field Notes, Zahra Khan, creative head of Foundation Art Divvy, is curating the pavilion, the first to officially represent Pakistan at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The artist Naiza Khan has been selected to present her work as part of the installation. Another first this is a show brought to Venice and conceived by a team of women. The director of Art Divvy - Asma Rashid, curator - Zahra Khan and artist - Naiza Khan. Manora Field Notes will immerse the viewer in life upon Manora Island, part of a small archipelago off the harbour of Karachi. Responding to the overarching theme of the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia May You Live in Interesting Times, curator Zahra Khan explains: “there are few countries which have experienced the upheaval which Pakistan has in recent times. This, along with a significant number of art schools and a long cultural history has fostered a vibrant and diverse arts scene. Artists speak clearly and powerfully about issues of Identity, migration, violence, community, and of course contemporary issues like climate change. We chose Naiza's work partly because it also allows for an insight into the mundane - set against the backdrop of an island with a long history, tiny and yet a microcosm in many ways of Pakistan today.” Over the last decade, the artist has traversed Manora on foot, documenting its material culture, public and social spaces and maritime past, and witnessing the slow erasure of the island’s history and natural ecology. The artist’s prolific archive of images, objects and observations engage with multiple bodies of knowledge - historic myths, conversations with local communities and architectural phenomena such as ruins and construction sites - creating an archive of lived experience which reflects shifts in the landscape.

Central to the installation are archival materialsThe Pavilion of Pakistan will unfold across three interconnected spaces, encouraging visitors to explore the venue like a ‘map’ of Manora Island. Relating to surveillance and navigation, found by Khan in the island’s abandoned 19th-century observatory. These include the 1939 India Weather Review, a record of weather reports from across British India, which will form the basis of a sound piece and a series of cast brass objects. Manora Field Notes will also include a multi-screen video installation, created using ten years of footage shot on the island, bringing together contrasting landscapes, viewpoints and narratives. “Pakistan’s presentation encourages the view of the artist as a lens through which the public can see the world, offering viewers a glimpse of the sights and sounds of daily life upon Manora Island”, shares Zahra. This is reflected in the installation’s use of telescope imagery, inspired by the vintage telescopes set up on Manora beach for tourists, which embody ideas of shifting perception. Like Manora Island, the pavilion will be an observation point from which to view similar transformations across the developing world. Asma Rashid, Director of Art Divvy says “we founded Art Divvy in 2016 with the goal of bringing the stories of contemporary Pakistani artists to a broader audience, with supporting emerging artists being core to that mission. The Pavilion comes at a time when Pakistan is turning the corner and looking forward to new horizons. The Pakistani pavilion in Venice is years in the making, and we hope this opens a new window to the diversity of talent and practice of artists and other curators working out of Pakistan. We are grateful for the support and partnership of the Ministry of Information, Government of Pakistan and The Pakistan National Council of the Arts, which recognizes that there are many more voices that need to be heard and stories which are waiting to be told. ” Naiza Khan (no relation comments: “Manora Field Notes, and the expansive research I have done over the years, is in some ways a homage to the island.

“ Shattering t h e S i l ence ” [Lahore, 29th May 2019] SOC Films, helmed by the two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, releases the second part from the animated series “Shattering the Silence”, a project aimed at creating meaningful dialogue around issues of child abuse.
The second animated short-film from Shattering the Silence is titled “Iqbal Ka Bachpan” which explores the story of Reebok Human Rights Award recipient Iqbal Masih; a young Pakistani boy who was forced to work as a carpet weaver in the 90s. Working through arduous conditions from the age of 4 onwards, Iqbal grew stunted and hopeless. However, when bonded labour was declared illegal by the Supreme Court, Iqbal was able to struggle and pursue his dream of attending school. Today, millions of children are still employed in Pakistan, from the ages of 4 to 14 years old and work in many sectors of the labour force from brick kilns to manufacturing. This second part raises light on the importance of creating awareness among children and their families about the laws which safeguard them and the quality of life they are expected to lead as their basic human right.
An SOC Films initiative, Shattering the Silence is a 4-part animated series, in Urdu, which aims to critically engage audiences, and children specifically, with real-life stories of child abuse and to educate them with the corresponding laws, the resources which can be accessed and the steps which can be taken if they, or any other children they know of, are forced into situations of marriage, labour, trafficking or physical abuse.

event Building on 9 years’ success, Lifestyle London #LLND2019, Pakistan Fashion Week Season 15 has been yet another resounding success. It’s been a weekend of colourful Pakistani lifestyle, fashion and exhibitions at the Institute of Directors, 116 Pall Mall, London on the 4th and 5th May. As part of the opening show on 4th May, the event included a catwalk section featuring LGBTQI models as a platform to show ‘we’re all in it together’. In 2018, Pakistan’s Parliament passed a law guaranteeing rights for transgender citizens and outlawing discrimination by both employers and private business owners;this landmark move is held by the country as historic and Riwayat is using this occasion to promote further acceptance and tolerance of marginalised communities in Pakistan, the UK and beyond. The catwalk featured Asifa Lahore, Britain’s First Out Transgender Muslim Drag Queen, among others. The event brought together more than 50 exhibitors and 30 leading designers, including Ahmed Bham, Rana Noman, Fahad Hassayn and Agha Noor, with Maheen Khan as Patron of the show. Influencers and celebrities from Pakistan, Canada and India attended this fantastic event. Laiba Zaid, Mehwish Hayat, Azfar Rehman, Shanzay Sheikh, Fauzia Aman, Sadaf Kanwal and others contributed to making this such a hit. The event took place at the exclusive venue of The Institute of Directors at 116 Pal Mall in the heart of London, the Nash Room, with its splendid chandelier, historic oil paintings and metres-long carpet a perfect setting for glitz and glamour. Great music was provided and live music belted out by 4 Poofs and a Piano – who first rose to fame on the very popular ‘Jonathan Ross Show’. The ‘meet and greet’ was a storming success with plenty of media attendance, interviews with Fahad Hassayn, Adnan Ansari and was reported on Ary News. Riwayat is the main UK exhibitor of the flourishing Pakistani clothing industry through its Pakistan Fashion Week, collaborating with designers to make their services available in a one-stop experience. Riwayat shows have successfully connected western customers with the opportunity to access Pakistani designers directly whilst seeing the latest trends and styling on the catwalk.

Pakistan Fashion Week 15 Riwayat shows have successfully connected western customers with the opportunity to access Pakistani designers directly whilst seeing the latest trends and styling on the catwalk. Spectators at the 3 soldout shows were not disappointed, judging by the enthusiasm from the applause. Adnan Ansari, Creative Director for Riwayat said, “We are excited about bringing this expanded event to the UK. We had our best line up of designers yet, along with exhibitors showing Pakistan crafts. As always, I’m proud to be representing Pakistan in London, raising awareness of our country and what we bring to international markets through our tradition and heritage. In addition, I am particularly pleased to have included Pakistan’s LGBTQI community in this event. Recent events in Birmingham have projected the notion that the Pakistani community around the world are intolerant toward marginalised communities and Riwayat are using this event to show the solidarity and equality with all communities around the world.” Show Produced & Directed by Adnan Ansari Choreography by Hira Shah Styled by Saima Kiran Choreography Hira Shah Model coordination by Muneer Muhammad
