Future of Couture by Altaroma Altamoda

Upon graduation from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, a very young Gaurav Gupta was instantly recognised as ‘Future of Couture’ by Altaroma Altamoda. This served as a clear sign toward the direction he would be taking to emerge, ten years later, as one of the strongest voices in couture and fashion from India. Over a decade, Gaurav Gupta, the man and the brand, have carved a world that is future primitive, reflected through sculpture-like garments with a sense of infinity and rhythm. Changing the face of the sari forever, merging indigenous Indian construction and embellishing techniques with his idea of the future, Gaurav has delivered and sustained a world that is Indian at its core and boundless in its form. Indian and international celebrities consistently endorse his designs on red carpet appearances. A few of them are Skylar Grey, Aishwarya Rai, Nicole Scherzinger, Julie Berman, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor. For its chic romance, the brand finds loyal clientele among the royalty in India and the UAE besides others. Just on the outskirts of the Indian capital, Gaurav Gupta runs his atelier and factory where a staff of 175 work solely for the brand, supporting its two flagship stores in Delhi and Mumbai’s luxury destinations, offering made-to-measure couture services.

1. Do you come from a family from the fashion industry? No, I come from a business family and I’m the first in my family to take up design as a profession. As a child, I was always drawn towards art and sculpture and knew that my calling was in fashion & design. One of my brothers is also my business partner.

2.

Define fashion.

Fashion and couture to me is like a higher state of mind; it’s like high art and fine design. Fashion and art are almost synonymous. It’s a very thought out process, executed delicately and is something that has a unique philosophy behind it. It also means an obsession with an idea to me.

3. Where did you study fashion design and what were the first designs during your studies? I graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, after which I went to the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

4. What is that made you take fashion seriously and be in this field for a long time? I was always inspired by art and sculpture and the world around me, and I always wanted to create something unique. It was a very natural progression for me after I completed my schooling. At CSM I was exposed to so many different art forms, culture, ideas and I was almost obsessed with design.

5. Did you start your own brand immediately after studies? My time at CSM, my experiences of working with Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen thereafter, of being the youngest jury member at Mittelmoda, helped shaped my thoughts and ideas. I returned to India with a clear direction of what I wanted to do as a progressive couturier and started my own label in 2004.

6. Where are you getting your inspiration from? I tend to derive newer, more unusual forms from the obvious. My brand has a strong signature, which is inspired by nature, trees, the abstract shapes of clouds, alternative mythology and dreamscapes. I create sculptural silhouettes that are structured yet fluid; the garments are dreamy and surreal but achieved in painstaking handcrafted embroideries and silhouettes. I am always in awe of the world around me and my mind is always on the go.

7. Do you get inspired from other cultures and borrow elements from them into your design? Yes, definitely. I am fascinated by art & culture from across the world, especially when I travel. It is exciting to explore the world and be inspired by what you see, eat, experience. I try and incorporate a little bit of that into my designs.

Moda Dynastie |

14

Moda Dynastie |

8. Do you have a specific pattern or style in your collections? Our shapes and silhouettes are inspired by geometric cuts and strong forms in architecture that vary between asymmetrical and symmetrical shapes. Our signature cut has been present since the first collection I ever did, but we are constantly reinventing couture. I see design in everything and always tend to include sculptural shapes and forms in my garments. Carving sculpturelike garments, I tend to merge indigenous Indian construction and embellishing techniques with our idea of the future, giving them an Indo-European feel with dramatic and timeless drapes.

9.

What kind of fabrics do you use and why?

We only use the finest of fabrics and silks, the few textile companies that we work with are the benchmark in creative innovation in their field and always open to customizing, and excited to experiment in order to personalize unique fabrics for us. Our signature fabrics – chiffons, crepes, dupions, tulles, nets, and lace; many developed from scratch in-house – are elevated with intricate hand embroidery and sculpted into fantastical shapes that accentuate the body. I love experimenting with new fabrics but love silks, chiffon, and organza.

10.

What women and men can wear to be stylish?

Style is very personal. Always be comfortable first, and don’t follow trends.

11. Are you against some fashion styles or fashion is everything? Fashion is individual, and unique to each person. It is about one’s own distinct personality, so I believe there are no rules when it comes to fashion.

12.

What are you fascinated by at the moment?

The universe!

13. When is your next collection coming out? We are currently working on the SS19 collection where we are experimenting with textured elements, and bold shapes and silhouettes. For the first time the brand is introducing Chikankari, a traditional Indian embroidery from Lucknow, in a very contemporary way. The collection is going to be a quintessential blend of traditional and modern sensibilities with easy, free flowing silhouettes.

14.

What’s your motto?

Wear your individuality, and don’t follow any trends! Make your own style choices.

FASHION COLLECTIVE HUB ROCKS LONDON FASHION WEEK WITH DJ NATALIA PARIS

By Angelina Kali

With so many shows organised during London Fashion Week, it is difficult to stand out from the throng. One event organiser that managed to hit the headlines for all the right reasons was the Fashion Collective Hub. The previous year, their event was staged on an exclusive super yacht. Its popularity meant that they held this year’s event in the more spacious The Steel Yard in the City of London. Still, queues formed to enter the anticipated event that was headlined by the Colombian supermodel and internationally renowned DJ Natalia Paris. Rocking to the Latin beat played by Natalia Paris, the models showcased a variety of styles - from the elegant couture of Sayada Rehman to the street funk of Maria Bustillos whilst Okwuis Frocentric was in tune with the Latin rhythm with his African inspired casual outfits. And the models wore some of the creations showcased during the fashion show at the VIP After Party that enabled everyone to see how the designer creations looked in a social setting. With several celebrities in attendance, the After Party was the place to be as Natalia Paris kept pumping up the volume with her rhythmic Latin inspired garage techno-beats. The Fashion Collective Hub organised more of an event rather than the usual showcasing of the catwalk. Prior to the fashion show, people could freely mingle with the designers, buyers and media at the exhibition. The networking opportunities were fantastic especially as the contacts made there could be cemented at the After Party. With their last two London Fashion Week events being this hip, I can’t wait to see what the Fashion Collective Hub will organise for next year.

Yassen Samouilov & Livia Stoianova

Interview by Vassilios Nicolaos Vitsilogiannis

Hello Livia and Yassen (L&Y), it’s nice doing this interview with you. Our readers would love to know a few things about your studies.

1. Why did you choose fashion over something else? Yassen Samouilov: I graduated from the Applied Arts School of Sofia in 1991–Master class Textile Design and Toys Design. Then Fine Arts School of Versailles in 1994. Fashion was my dream as a kid.

Livia Stoianova: I graduated from the Fine Arts

School of Sofia in 1992-Master class Graphic Arts. Then Fine Arts School of Paris in 1996.

What is fashion for you?

Fashion gives you an infinity of possibilities to explore different expressions. To give haute couture a kind of wink, a sense of humour - to introduce the whole sense of freedom one sees in the street into high fashion; to give couture the same provocative and arrogant look as punk - but, of course, with luxury and dignity and style. Says Yves Saint Laurent

3. Do you enjoy working with each other? We have worked more than 20 years together and we will continue that way enjoying the challenges fashion gives us.

4.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Your limitation—it's only your imagination Inspiration is everywhere.

5. Couture houses and the couturier have their own style and a different approach when they conceptualize a collection. How do you do that while designing? In our work first comes the idea, the story we want to tell ,than we think about what is possible .

6. What kind of fabrics do you use in your garments? Extraordinary unusual and surprising…Always looking for exceptional materials.

7. Have you ever thought of designing a collection that is not too commercial or provocative and you took a moment back to rethink about it? Change of plans. We have an extraordinary chance to be completely free in our creative process and never regret what we design. There will always be somebody in the world too sensitive about something…

8. What is the longest time you spend on designing a gown? We spent months on the beetle wings “Sternosera” collection .It was a very challenging collection. The gown with beetle’s wings took the longest.

9.

What’s a typical day in your Atelier?

Well coffee, computer, then the team coming with all the questions…Listening to our canary singing in our office thinking we are in the country side.

10. Why did you name the brand On Aura Tout Vu-which means we will have seen it all-is there a concept behind it? You think you've seen it all but never...will always be a surprise. This represents us perfectly.

11. You had presented quite a lot of fashion shows and I would like you to remember one that was your favorite best. All of them are our babies so it is difficult to name one collection. All corresponding to a state of mind of that time.

12.

Name a fashion designer you admire.

Elsa Schiaparelli, Alexander McQueen, Rei Kawakubo, Iris Van Herpen and many others.

13. What are some of the celebrities that have worn or bought your clothes? We have the chance to work with Madonna, Lady Gaga , Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé and so many others.

14. Do you design exclusively for celebrities too? Often we have requests for custom designs made exclusively made for them. Which is a big part of our activities as well as ballet and dance costumes.

15. What’s and when your next collection is out? We will present our next couture collection in January. We think one collection for the moment is a slow attitude against the speed of fashion

16. How do you feel fashion will be in the future? We think more personally oriented and less mass production. Also hope beautiful can hopefully come back. Because today fashion becomes confusing and because of strong advisements people think it is good …but the quality is not there. So we are wishing future can be more human oriented. "Fashions fade, style is eternal." —Yves Saint Laurent

event COLABS: Pakistan’s Largest Collaborative Workspace opens its doors for Business! [Lahore, 20th April 2019]: Pakistan’s largest collaborative workspace, COLABS opened its doors for business on 19th April 2019 with a first-of-itskind experiential event in Lahore. COLABS has been thoughtfully designed to provide entrepreneurs, organizations, startups and companies, with a modern and forward-thinking space to work, learn, grow, interact and collaborate.

With the COLABS brand, Omar and Ali have reimagined and reconfigured the traditional workplace, to reflect the evolution of office culture and implement an environment which is more conducive to modern work flows. The vision is to create an ecosystem that is primed for innovation, the exchange of ideas and as the names suggests collaboration. COLABS is set to change the future of work in Pakistan.

COLABS is a commercial project of SABCON, one of Pakistan’s most innovative development firms, and is the brain-child of co-founders and twin brothers, Omar & Ali Shah. The venture is supported by their partners Magnus Wahlstrom, founder of Swedish E-commerce giant www.bangerhead.se, finance executive Ahmed Shah and the creative talents of Omer Jilani of Happa Studios and the design expertise of Nida Mian. The event was managed by JS Events.

Speaking of the philosophy behind the concept, Omar Shah, co-founder and CEO of COLABS said, “It was very important for us to make room for a new purpose and to channel the 1950s industrial spirit. We felt the original space fit right into what COLABS is aiming to be; a tailored experience true to the needs of modern work. Our flagship location will provide a platform that drives the new era of business innovation, successful growth and workspace productivity through the spirit of collaboration in Pakistan." While incubators, accelerators and venture capital funds have played a great role in shaping Pakistan’s startup and technology ecosystem, COLABS hopes to fill the existing void for a common platform allowing innovators and entrepreneurs to come together and freely collaborate to grow Pakistan’s economy. The COLABS community and network of like-minded change makers can be the precise catalyst to altogether transform Pakistan’s business landscape. The flagship Lahore launch will be succeeded by multiple COLABS sites across the country. Speaking about the uniqueness of the project, Ali Shah, CEO of SABCON said, “Lahore is known for its communities, culture and heritage. It’s something which is part of who we are and with COLABS, we wanted to bring the different communities together into something which is more contemporary – the future of office working. This project is different from our other projects because it was SABCON’s first project which has been thoughtfully designed using extensive research to optimize the user experience.

As Lahore and its heritage is very close to my heart, I chose this old industrial towel factory, because it had a lot of character, we repurposed it while keeping the original look and feel of the building, that is what I think others should do with old industrial buildings in Lahore. The design team is cognizant of the history of the space and has worked in harmony with its existing character. The venue has been thoughtfully adapted to meld prime aesthetic sensibilities with ultimate functionality. Extensive research and ideation sprints in User Experience & Experience Design have been utilized to create an all-inclusive workspace which combines modern technology and thoughtfully designed spaces. DESIGNER An interview with

VA S S ILIOS N ICOLAOS VITS ILOG IANNIS

1.

What Is Your Fashion Profile?

I have always wanted to become a fashion designer. When it came to the idea of applying to universities and picking my major. I was told that as long as I got a degree in Business I could do whatever I wanted afterward. So that is exactly what I did, I moved to Washington DC and attended American University and Majored in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration but I always felt that I wasn’t feeding my artistic side. So I enrolled myself in art classes and also added a Studio Art minor, which included painting, sculpting, and multimedia. I also started my own fashion blog zaiddor. com In my final year in DC, I applied to Istituto Marangoni in Milan and I got in. At that point, I knew that’s where I was meant to be and what I was meant to do. After receiving my degree in Fashion Design I moved to London and attended Central Saint Martin and took specialized courses in couture techniques and embroidery as well as hand painting. I launched my brand and my first atelier in Dubai. With such a global background being as an Arab American as well as being educated in the Italian fashion techniques I found inspiration in the fusion of cultures. Imagining a person adorned by European clean cuts, true American liberties, and the ever-existent Arab dramatization has helped me to create the globally hybrid woman, a representative of a new globalized world and the woman whom I yearn to design for.

2. For Whom Fashion Designers You Design and How Acceptable Are Their Designs? In my case I design for myself to release the inner creature that is trapped within me.

3. What Is Your Inspiration About Fashion Designing? It is something that I can never imagine myself not doing, my inspiration emerges from culture, events, people, anything that energizes me.

4.

What Are Your Career Goals?

I see the brand expanding by opening more ateliers to cater to my clients around the world.

79

5. Tell Me How You Stay Up to Date with Fashion? I am really inspired by how people dress in the street the way they carry themselves the different esthetics etc. The street and imagining people’s stories and lives really does inspire me and keep me up to date.

6. Which Skills Are Important for A Fashion Designer for A Successful Career? Trusting their gut instinct, managing talent, financial management and perseverance

7. If You Today Were to Create A Revolutionary Look, What Would It Be? Haven’t I created them already? (hahaha joking) but revolutionary for me means a wearable art installation.

8. What Should People Wear to Be Elegant on Any Occasion? The look that makes you most confident, clothing helps you elevate that confidence, nothing more beautiful that confidence with an outfit that matches your personality!

80

Moda Dynastie |

9. What Was the Biggest Rookie Mistake You Made During the First Working Year? Many mistakes were made from HR, to financial, to marketing. But the question is why do I take them as mistakes, if we can rename them as trials and errors, I think it teaches you more, than having a negative connotation related to it.

10. What Role Social Media Play in Fashion Today? Social media allowed us to reach an audience faster and get in contact with people from across the world.

11.

What Fabrics Do You Use?

We source our fabrics from all over the world to suit our needs. We go anywhere from silks, cottons to latex to metals.

12. What’s Your Favorite Part of Being A Designer?

Knowing that there is nothing else in the world that I would rather be doing. This idea gets me out of bit every morning and creates a feeling of internal calmness.

13. What’s the Best Piece of Advice You’ve Heard? Don’t look at people around you or your competitors, follow your own path.

14. Fashion World Rotates on an Axis. This Brings Back Old Trends or There Are Innovative Trends? Trusting their gut instinct, Fashion is really inspired by the past and yes trends do come back most of the time. But each time that trend returns it says something about the culture and current politics. So it is interesting to see the cycle and how people relate back to the past.

Hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the panel discussion will be followed by an exclusive film screening of STUDENT ATHLETE. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will feature as a panelist in the award-winning panel for a special conversation about the exploitative world of college sports, the rules of amateur athletics, and how Rep. Al Lawson’s bill — the NCAA Advancement Act of 2019 — would change the student-athlete landscape. Also featuring in the panel discussion will be U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, Florida's Fifth Congressional District, Steve Stoute, Producer of Student Athlete, Trish Dalton, Director of Student Athlete, Robert W. Turner II, Ph.D., Former NFL athlete and author and Natasha Cloud, Basketball player for the WNBA's Washington Mystics. Released in collaboration with HBO SPORTS, the sports documentary STUDENT ATHLETE, is codirected by Trish Dalton (“Bordering on Treason”) with the production team spearheaded by NBA superstar and three-time world champion LeBron James, one of today’s most socially responsible and community-minded athletes. Indeed, with STUDENT ATHLETE, Sharmeen hopes to change the way the NCAA operates and with this partnership with the congressmen, they are one step closer to bringing legislation that will empower athletes“We have had success in the past in Pakistan with legislation surrounding honor killings and feel that it is important to use film for social change and to force difficult conversations to affect change.” said Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

“Every year, billions of dollars are generated off the backs of an unpaid labor force: college athletes. The panel discussion will examine the rules of amateur athletics and tackle how my bill, NCAA Advancement Act of 2019, would change the student-athlete landscape. The legislation would eliminate the “one and done” rule, provide medical coverage for sports related injuries, and create an easier process for student athletes to gain work opportunities while in school. As a former college basketball player, I understand firsthand the sacrifices and struggles student-athletes face. My goal with this bill is to provide NCAA athletes the support they need to be successful long after their college playing days are over.” said U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, Florida's Fifth Congressional District Unpaid college athletes generate billions of dollars for their institutions every year. STUDENT ATHLETE unveils the exploitative world of high-revenue college sports through the stories of four young men at different stages of their athletic careers, as well as a coach-turned-advocate and a whistle-blowing shoe rep who exposes the money trail. The documentary spotlights: former NCAA and NFL coach John Shoop; New Jersey high school basketball phenom Nick Richards, now at the University of Kentucky; Mike Shaw, who played at the University of Illinois and Bradley University; Shamar Graves, a former wide receiver at Rutgers University; and Silas Nacita, a walk-on who played at Baylor University. food Aida Khan introduces

“SHOLA Karachi Kitchen” in London!

[Lahore, 8th May 2019] Aida Khan, the entrepreneur and chef behind Islamabad’s traditional cuisine destination, Karachi Kitchen, proudly extended her culinary prowess by introducing her establishment: SHOLA Karachi Kitchen, in the heart of West London, White City, positioned where the BBC used to be. Aida Khan has already been serving her Karachi offerings in Supper Clubs in London and in March 2019, opened her first restaurant SHOLA Karachi Kitchen in West London. With her first restaurant in London, Khan aims to explore the real flavours of Pakistan laden in tradition. Aida Khan’s nostalgia for Karachi’s bustling food markets with authentic flavorful food was an inspiration for SHOLA’s first permanent residence in White City. Aida also hopes to shed light on how Pakistani food can be clean and healthy – appealing to vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters. With the menu comprising of 50% grilled food, SHOLA takes one back to the foundations of Pakistani cooking. “We are traditional; using family recipes. We serve fast casual food, but with high quality ingredients and innovative cooking techniques. Our food is value for money and you won’t go home feeling hungry! It is a celebration of Pakistani food and our extensive flavours and aromas. Our SHOLA experience, is to give you that!” said Aida Khan. With SHOLA Karachi Kitchen, Aida Khan aims to bring back the era of simple, clean cooking, the way it has been done in the sub-continent’s family kitchens for centuries. At SHOLA Karachi Kitchen, Khan and her team of expert chefs use only the highest quality ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. In Pakistan, currently offering takeaway homedeliveries primarily in Islamabad, SHOLA embraces hearty, artisanal traditional soul food combining the traditional flavours, aromas and authentic spices of Karachi.

Aida comes from a family with a deep passion for food. From an early age, she learnt how to cook traditional family food from her mother, and inherited her love for food through her father’s passion to eat. Her fondest childhood memories are of early morning drives to Karachi markets with her father, in search of the fluffiest poori or the sweetest halwa for breakfast. Since moving to London, traditional Pakistani family recipes play an integral part at home, whether its cooking with her boys, or feeding the tribes of friends and extended family who turn up to feast on her delicious meals. Bringing Pakistani food back into people’s lives, and through SHOLA, putting Pakistani cuisine on the London food map, Khan hopes to open more branches of SHOLA across the globe and more specifically, in Pakistan.
