Greetings friends, May the Fourth Be With You Contents

Thank you.  Yes thank you to the people that continue to take my call when I am asking to donate to important events and organizations here in Modesto.  Modesto is stronger because of our volunteer and donor strength.  Thanks to you, we raised over $2500 for Haven Center to help assist victims and stop domestic violence.  I am grateful to you.  Thank you all that are donating to help us build the Graffiti USA Museum.  This will truly be a game changer for our community and people far and wide and maybe even other galaxies will come visit.  Modesto is truly known for some great things and we have to spread the word.   Modesto is so fortunate to be known for so many great things and history.   You think about all of the cities that have big identity crisis and search endlessly for their place in life.  Modesto not only has one, it has a multiple things to choose from, from our global leadership in wine, to producing world class entertainers and rock climbers, we are the home of George Lucas who changed the world of film and merchandise entertainment. Thanks to the success of American Graffiti, Star Wars was able to be produced and the world has never been the same since.  People of all ages appreciate the world of imagination and we should be proud of what we are and who calls Modesto home. This is the foundation on which we build all

the other cool things that make Modesto. We got a reality check last month as we were visited by four mayors from cities in Ukraine. As we were showing them what we have to offer, and the riches of our region, you understand that one of the mayor’s cities, Hulyaipole, used to be 20,000 people and now it is 3,000. Can you imagine? The municipal function of his city now is basically garbage clean up and importing water, as all of the utilities have been destroyed. These mayors are dealing with land mines, shelling, no electricity, uncertainty and fear, but here they are, here in Modesto, working to learn from us how to make their cities viable.   We need to be a good example. We can learn a lot from our Sister Cities project as understanding the needs and the issues of others is the key to being a good human and making compassionate decisions.  It is truly

a moment of reflection for America.  Will we learn?  Will we fight for democracy like they are fighting?  Time will tell and we need to think about that as we approach Memorial Day and remember what they fought for.  We have it good and we need to celebrate and treasure what we do have.

Now that the weather has dried out a bit, the water is high, the blooms are big the question you need to ask yourself, besides “do you feel lucky”, is “what to do”?  There are so many things we can do and experience, so we have tried to help you, based on what kind of mood you are in, if you have kids, want to walk or drive, or whatever.  There is so much at your fingertips, there are so many cool local experiences, businesses, restaurants and performing arts places that the choices can be tough, but ModestoView is here to help you make the best of your local living.

I am grateful to all of you that jump in, create something new, build a new event, start a business or just positively contribute to our community dialog.   It is up to us to build the city we want so that we love it and our kids will love it, and their kids and so on and so on.  You get it.

Please let me know what you like or don’t like about ModestoView so we can continue to make it better.  The ViewCrew is out there making things happen and we hope to see you out and about and hope to see you at the May the 4th celebration in 10th St Plaza at 5 pm or stop by our porch for some good local music at Porchfest.

Cruising has been part of our lives a long time ago in this galaxy and many others.  Hanging out at the nearest intergalactic trading post are long time sweethearts and Star Wars fans Chad Johnson (Stanislaus County’s Surveyor!) and Kelly Gregerson, commercial banking officer at Bank of Stockton.  They met each other at Lakewood School in 1980, become a couple in 1991 and married in 1997.  Kelly even threw Chad a surprise Star Wars birthday party at the State. They are also the parents of Leia (named after Star Wars) and Sofia who were both our All Ages writers over the last few years.   Wait till  you see them in their DEVO costumes.

“The Point is Joy” with Josiah Johnson

tion. The ViewCrew was lucky to get to talk to Johnson about his new tour, the process of making music, and his upcoming live show presented by Off The Air on Monday, May 8th with Birthday Dad at Green’s on Tenth in Downtown Modesto!

The sun was setting over the skyline of San Francisco. It was early fall in 2011 at the Treasure Island Music Festival and it was the first time I remember seeing a new band live and falling immediately in love. The band? The Head and the Heart. The singer? Josiah Johnson. Johnson is originally from Southern California and moved to Seattle where he became one of the founding members of The Head and the Heart, the indie-folk band that single-handedly defined a decade of my music consump-

Since leaving the band and starting a solo career in 2018, Johnson released his solo album, Every Feeling on a Loop, in 2020 and now resides in the Bay Area. Every Feeling on a Loop was recorded in New York and made in a time when Josiah was processing the emotions and experiences from leaving the band and finding the path forward during a difficult time. Songs like “False Alarms” and “I Wish I Had” weave his story of feeling your way through the cycle of emotions and knowing that things will pass and, eventually, things will come back, all in a loop. Johnson is touring now with songs from this album as he couldn’t tour when the album came out during the pandemic and the live performances feel unique for him each time with different arrangements

from the recording studio sessions. Did we mention the horn section and instrumental accompaniments are out of this world? Today, Josiah is about to release his new album in May and is back on the road touring with The Head and the Heart. Johnson released the single “Hello Hello on Fire” from his forth coming album in 2022 and has a pop energy that diverges from his classically folk background. Johnson says it’s an interesting time for him because he’s creating new sounds and experimenting with different musical styles, but is also going back into his old repertoire and re-learning songs from over ten years ago. Johnson just completed a tour in Europe with Maya Elise from Italy to Sweden and is now beginning a series of shows across the country performing both solo sets and joining THATH at venues like the legendary Red Rocks in Colorado. At Down in the Valley Festival 2023 in September, Johnson will be playing a solo set as well as joining The Head and the Heart for a full circle moment where old and new can meet. Johnson’s new album is filled with hope, optimism, new sounds, and techniques with “Carry Me” standing out as a favorite for Johnson. Johnson tells us “the point is joy” in his new music. May the Fourth be with you. April was taken up with the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio for 50 artists on the weekend tour. There was no time during the event to catch up with other artists while hosting visitors at the home studio. I was in studio nine, and I want to note the great reviews visitors gave to Studio 8, the Orange Door Art Collaborative at 1501 K Street. I went over before writing Art View to look in the windows and find out more information about when the collaborative studio gallery is open. The show for Open Studio by artists Sarah Smith Aaronson, Erin Gaylord-Sweeney, and James Horning was a great addition to the arts community in Downtown Modesto.

I also walked over to MJC and suggested that you look at the parking lot next to The Silos and check out the murals there at the East campus. Across the street around Contentment Brewing, into the courtyard of the MJC art department, and the MJC Art Gallery, you can stay in touch with what is going on campus. It’s worth the tour. Cross Tully Road during weekday business hours and visit the Kruse-Lucas Gallery, where Susan Rossman’s art is displayed.

Cinco de Mayo sees the return of DOMO

First Fridays, and the Chartreuse Muse will be hosting “Let’s Sling Some Mud- Throw Down,” a friendly competition with the San Joaquin Potter’s Guild from 5 to 9 PM. In addition to this competition, First Friday visitors are invited to participate in an art demo for anyone interested in trying their hand at throwing a pot.

May the Art Be With You

At my studio, many of the art gardens and projects here use repurposed materials. The many signs I do for the Riverdance Farms U-Pick and Pick and Gather festival coming up Memorial Day weekend use sign stock found in the alley, warped or discarded plywood, old wood siding, upcycled with a coat of paint, and lettering. This is the spirit of the “Trash to Treasures” show at Mistlin Gallery, a Stanislaus Arts Council invitation to create art from discarded, unwanted, and disposal items into wall hangings, sculptures, fabric art, small furniture pieces, and more. The show is open from May 9 to June 10. The Teaching Artists Guild and Stanislaus Arts Council are hosting a casual networking event at Mistlin Gallery on May 10. The Meet and Greet invite teaching artists in the Central Valley to drop in, enjoy some refreshments, and meet up with teachers in the visual arts, dance, music, drama, media arts, poetry, and more. The event is free and runs from 5:30 to 7 PM.

The third Thursday Art Walk is on May 18. Spring weather opens more artists to the sidewalks, as at Tresetti’s art corner and First Friday DOMO market. Look for the expanded map. Sam Pierstorff has been raving about the opening of State Theatre associated Film School for grades 8 to 12, opening in July, filling up fast. Check-in with the galleries Queen Bean and Dragonfly Art for Life for Spring and summer classes for students and adults starting this month and in June.

Knights Ferry Gallery studio is open in the downtown area. Ceramic artist Karen Bohbot is among the first to exhibit there. Carnegie Arts Center is holding a weekend fundraiser, The Art of Design: Home and Garden Tour, on May 13. Visitors from Lodi Arts Association to Open Studio announced they are holding their first Open Studio there in the Fall. Support local artists.

You know the truth, every day is Mother’s Day, but every May, we make sure to all be on our best behavior and make sure that our Moms are truly celebrated. This is a special time to remember how important our moms are. Also, note, there are a lot of dads out there that are also moms to so many. Let’s make sure to take time, spend some time and effort celebrating the amazing people that are raising us. You can really surprise your mom with beautiful flowers from the Modesto Farmer’s Market and there are many fun things to do, or even just as simple as breakfast in bed, a donut from your fave donut shop or a hand made drawing. Mother’s Day is May 14 this year.

will happen on May 21.  It’s so big in fact, that it will be held at more than 40 local porches.  Yes, PorchFest is coming and you can enjoy nearly 60 different band, performing on people’s porches in the College, Downtown, and LaLoma neighborhoods.  I am proud to be one of those porches in the LaLoma neighborhood featuring the new Shelly Streeter Band, the Vibes, Porch Beatles and Third Party.  From noon-5, you can ride your bike, walk or stroll to the many different porches and have a blast.  Some porches have food and drink but please be prepared and stay hydrated. This is a free event so kick so please remember to tip the

Celebrating Mothers with Music All Month Long

Spring is in the air, and May is the perfect month to celebrate the amazing contributions that mothers make to the world. And what better way to honor musical mothers in the Modesto area than by listening to and dancing with them all month?

On May 12th, kick off your Mother’s Day celebrations at Music in the Plaza with an exceptional performance by the David Perez Band. Known for their infectious rhythms and lively performances, this band will surely get the crowd dancing. Reserve your table on the patio at Ralston’s Goat and Fuzio and enjoy the show while savoring delicious food and drinks.

For a more relaxed Mother’s Day experience, you can go to Iron Hub Winery in Plymouth. From 11am-5pm on May 14th, Sweet Mama Rachel and the Homemade Jam Band will perform live while you enjoy a delectable brunch. Delicioso Bistro, from 11:30am-1:30pm, has Sol y Luna performing for your enjoyment while you enjoy your meal.

Porch Fest, a beloved Modesto tradition, it is put on by some incredible women and mothers each year. On Sunday, May 21st, from 12-5pm, you can cruise around your neighborhood on your bikes or set up in a neighbor’s front yard and enjoy some of the best music the area offers. The lineup includes a variety of talented musicians, such as Tiffany Rose and the Outlaw Hearts, Patty Castillo Davis, Us4Love, Remedy, and Fired Up. The schedule and map of

all performers should be available soon at modestoporchfest.com.

Us4Love, a modern alt/pop trio, has several upcoming performances throughout May. Catch them at P Wexford’s on May 6th, The Twisted Pig on May 17th, Rivet’s Grill on May 19th, Porch Fest on May 21st, and Contentment Brewing on May 26th.

Fired Up is a high-energy, mother-fronted classic rock band known for their lively performances and active presence throughout the 209. You can catch them at the 108 Lounge in Riverbank on May 5th, The Terrace on May 6th, the Eprosen House in Twain Harte on May 12th, and Porch Fest in Modesto on May 21st.

These are just a few of the many talented mother musicians in the Modesto area. By supporting live local music and the venues that bring it to you, you can not only enjoy great entertainment but also help to foster a vibrant and thriving local arts scene. So why not make May a month-long celebration of music and motherhood? Grab your friends and family and head out to enjoy the sounds of these fantastic musicians!

A long time ago, in a city in California. In 1977, the film industry changed forever. In Modesto, we celebrated with the premiere on July 1 at the Briggsmore Theatre. The sound of the Death Star exploding was the world of cinema, forever changed by technology, sound, story, and economics. Modestan George Lucas had made the film of his dreams, funded by a successful American Graffiti, a rite of passage movie about his hometown. On the new big screen, Luke Skywalker (formerly Starkiller in early script drafts) embarks on his own rite of passage from his hometown to destroy the evil empire. Notice any parallels here?

Fellow Modestans, we are the home of George Lucas and the home of Star Wars. While growing up, he loved comic books, created a neighborhood newspaper, and built backyard roller coasters and sets at Downey High. He raced cars, cruised, nearly died in a crash, studied at MJC, and left his hometown planet to go to film school. We are and should be proud. I feel a sense of personal pride in being a Modestan as I walk through Star Wars Land and feel the awe that something that came from the mind of a Modestan has conquered all of Hollywood and Disney. Simply amazing. Thank you, George Lucas.

With over a dozen full-length films, cartoons, spin-offs, and a whole world of merchandising, Star Wars is known by everyone the world over, so we look forward to the day when we can get together and celebrate on May the 4th in downtown Modesto. Bring your lightsaber, dress as your fave character, join your friends, and enjoy being the Home of Star Wars.

There will be drink specials all over Modesto, and everyone is encouraged to be their favorite Star Wars character at work, play, or wherever. There is a fantastic new mural at Never Boring on 14th Street that you need to visit. There are other murals in the Mural Alley off J Street.

Our celebration started on April 28 at the State Theatre with the original trilogy on the classic big screen. The Brenden Theatres will be show-

ing the Return of the Jedi, and there will be a special premiere of another space blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy, at the Brenden. Middagh Goodwin, who hosts Modesto’s Graffiti-Con, has been the curator for Modesto things Star Wars and pop culture and has prepared a grand celebration each year. This free family event in 10th St Plaza from 5-9 pm will feature the 501st, the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, X Wing Fighter model will be available for photos. Feel the force and come dressed to celebrate.

If you don’t have your fill with a galaxy far, far away after this, grab your tickets to see Modesto Symphony Orchestra perform the music of John Williams as the Empire Strike Back is projected onto a massive screen at the Gallo Center for the Arts on June 3rd. You can check out C3PO and R2D2 models at the Graffiti USA Museum, 610 N 9th. Note: Carrie Fisher will be posthumously inducted at the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May the 4th

Esto Broughton Female Political Pioneer

graduate from the University of California Berkeley in the Class of 1915, and then graduated from the UC Law School in 1916. Returning to Modesto, she became the first woman lawyer admitted to the bar in Stanislaus County. After her first election to the Assembly in 1918, she was then re-elected to represent the greater Modesto area in 1920, 1922, and 1924 – the last of two in which she ran unopposed, as she was able to register under multiple political party affiliations and earned the nominations.

California women won the right to vote in the state in 1911, nine years before the 19th Amendment secured women’s suffrage across the country, but it was not until the Election of 1918 that a woman won a seat at the table in Sacramento. In 1918, a young woman named Esto Bates Broughton put Modesto on the political map in a historical way. Esto Broughton was elected as a Democrat to the California Assembly representing Modesto and the greater 46th District, becoming one of the first women elected to the State Legislature (only 3 other women were elected that year). When sworn in at age 29, she was the youngest woman elected to the Legislature until her record was broken in 2002.

Born in Modesto on January 8th, 1890 to James and Jennie Broughton, Esto Broughton grew up in the family home at 1715 Downey Avenue where the Discovery Inn is now located. Broughton went on to

While in the Assembly, Broughton advocated for women’s community property rights, jobs programs for World War I veterans, beverage consumer protections, and became the leading voice on agricultural irrigation. The Broughton-Bennett Bill, one of Broughton’s first bills introduced in 1919, even paved the path forward for to allow irrigation districts to generate and provide electricity to district residents, as MID and TID continue to do today. As a high mark of her commitment to public service, Esto Broughton was a nominated delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1932 that named Franklin Delano Roosevelt the presidential nominee, and again was a delegate in 1952. After a trailblazing life in politics and law, Esto Broughton passed away in Modesto on November 20th, 1956 and is buried in San Jose.

Esto Broughton, Modesto native and political pioneer, became one of the mothers of female political representation in California. There was the classically trained Chinese erhu virtuoso.....the mesmerizing hang drum duo from Germany.....the Celtic group rocking a hurdy-gurdy.....and the unforgettable Eliza Rickman - one of the most fascinating artists I’ve ever featuredmaking use of quite the spread of trinkets including a bowed glockenspiel. A year or so has passed since I last enjoyed the opportunity to present such unique instrumentation, and it’s high time for another new offering.

I’ve partnered with the Mistlin Gallery for a special joint concert, where their Grace Lieberman Cabaret series meets my ‘Songlines’ world music series. On the first Sunday of this month, we’ll present an afternoon with Ensemble Sangineto on tour from Italy. I’ve featured groups sharing the music of Italy before. Still, this trio offers a twist with a sound not quite like anything I’ve hosted, fusing traditional Italian & Celtic styles with classical, folk, and even some Gregorian chant. The sides of this triangle of tempo are twins Adriano & Caterina Sangineto on harp and bowed psaltery, respectively, and Jacopo Ventura on guitar and bouzouki, with all three sharing vocal duties. Italian folk tunes meet modern international flavor with charming melodies, original arrangements, delicate polyphonic vocal textures, spirited rhythms, and innovative and unpredictable use of instrumentation. Keeping with the world-music theme, the Modesto Symphony Orchestra concludes its classical season with two nights of Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ followed by American composer Florence Price’s Symphony #3. The last piece celebrates the composer’s heritage, brimming with jazz, blues, and ragtime influence. The third movement is based on a dance style developed by central Africans enslaved on plantations in the South. May 12 & 13 at 7:30pm at the Gallo Center. Tickets start at $19. I’ve neglected to see an MSO concert for a while, but there’s nothing quite like that fully satisfying symphonic sound, and this double feature is one to look forward to. Star Wars has captured the minds of most of the world, and perhaps even beyond.

Modesto is the fortunate home of George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars and he spent many a creative day, dreaming up new characters, reading comic books, building neighborhood roller coaster and even creating sets at Downey High Drama. Today, Star Wars is a global phenomenon.  For Modestans, it is special to be from George Lucas’ hometown, and we have many unique people in our community that celebrate Star Wars culture.  One of the key people is Jamie Franscella, executive officer and event coordinator of the 501st Garrisons central California Garrison.  These folks live these characters, from Storm Troopers, to the Empire, Sith, resistance and beyond. You most likely have seen them at one of Modesto’s May the 4th Celebrations and let’s get to know Jamie.

ModestoView: When did you first see Star Wars?

Jamie Franscella: I saw Star Wars in the late summer of 1977 at the Briggsmore theater on McHenry. I was nine years old and I was hooked.

MV: What do you do outside of being part of the 501st and your love for Star Wars

JF: I work locally in the dairy industry

MV: What inspired you to join the 501st?

JF: Everyone has a story in the 501st mine started with the loss of my brother to suicide. I wanted to reach out and volunteer just do something. I saw these people dressed in Star Wars costumes and I asked questions. Being a life-long fan and seeing the vast number of charities world wide that the legion supported, they were a perfect fit. I had my first costume done and entered the club officially in January of 2019 .

MV: What Star Wars Characters do you enjoy portraying most?

JF: I’m a very interactive character it’s basically acting and you are that character

in that persons eye you are interacting with. Being a Tusken raider is a great one though. The costume, like all of our costumes is movie quality. But what really brings it out is that Tusken yell and waving that Gaffi stick over my head it definitely gets your attention and people love it.

MV: What were the most fulfilling or memorable events you have been involved with as a member of the 501st?

JF: I’ve done a lot of events but what stands out the most is the first visit I did at a children’s hospital. I meet a girl who was not doing well. She was excited when we came in sitting up smiling and going on about how much she loved Star Wars . I held her hand and in that moment there was no cancer , no hospital; there was hope and happiness. Outside her room her mother told us she didn’t have much time left and

we had brought so much joy to her and thanked us. It’s the hardest thing to do but is the most fulfilling. Those helmets hide the tears .

MV: How does it feel to be part of, but instrumental in, creating a Garrison honoring the hometown of the Creator (George Lucas)?

JF: The imperial Graffiti squad is currently active! I am proud to have contributed to getting the squad going. A lot of work by a lot of people was done to get this going. This will be a lasting tribute to George Lucas and Modesto’s Star Wars legacy!! Our current patch has “Thank the Maker “ on it. We refer to George as “the Maker”.

MV: How can someone join the 501st and get involved?

JF:  Joining the 501st is really easy. Just look us up at 501st.com, the local Garrison is the Central California Garrison the squad in the Modesto area is the Imperial Graffiti Squad. Reach out to us.  We are here to help you on your journey and you’ll never be

around such a great group of people. We are an international costuming group with over 14,000 members. As far as costumes we have hundreds of characters to chose from. These costumes are movie quality costumes. Costumes are approved based on these standards. I have to say please reach out before starting to purchase items for a costume if you are interested in joining. We have years of experience we’d like to share with you in working on your costume and will get you going in the right direction. We do not sell costumes as a group but there are plenty of vendors. MV: What do you think Star Wars means to people, especially people here in Modesto?

JF: I think Star Wars is very important to Modesto as is American Graffiti. My wish is that some day there will be a Star Wars museum in Modesto that would attract people from all over the world to come visit George Lucas’s home town.

MV: How proud do you feel, coming from the Modesto area, when you walk through Star Wars Land in Disneyland

JF: Walking though Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland was so emotional.  As a child you play Star Wars and now as an adult you are in a galaxy far far away. The sounds, the smells, the characters. It is such an immersive experience everyone must go even if you’re not a fan. I just want to put on one of my costumes and hang out there for a week. Disney if you read this give me a call!

MV: You have deep roots here in our community, and you have served our country, what parallels does Star Wars have for your life?

JF: As a nine year old seeing Star Wars I was inspired by Sandtroopers! They were the elite soldiers of the Empire. I grew up among a lot of veterans. I wanted to be that solider and I did. I served 8 years in the Army and I finally became that Sandtrooper. Every detail in that costume from the grimy look to the backpack says Solider to me. I participate in veteran walks and parades in it. Also as a veteran I served in Panama in 1989-90. Two years ago I friended a man from Panama who was a Star Wars fan and had served in Panama. They were starting up their own garrison in Panama. I was encouraged by their members to make the trip.  My wife and I recently returned from that trip to Panama with many new friends from the Panamanian outpost . Star Wars is truly a language spoken around the world !!!

“Meet Me At The Moon” Harvest Moon

If it’s time for brunch, we can tell you exactly where you’ll find the View Crew. Harvest Moon at 10:00 AM sharp Saturday morning after the Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market for some of the best food in town.

Harvest Moon is a downtown staple that has been “toss ing your salad” since 1996 with classics like the Neil’s Toss and Dinah Burger and changed hands in 2020 when businesswoman Jessie Wiggins took the reins of the legendary spot. If you want good food, like really really incredible food, “the Moon” must be on the top of your to-go list.

Jessie Wiggins was born in Savannah, Georgia and moved around the country as a child of the military. Her first restaurant gig was at 15 years-old at the Steam Plant in Belvidere, Illinois, but her heart always brought her back to Savannah. Jessie is now raising her daughter here in Modesto and has a successful real estate business, but she decided to live out her dreams by owning her own restaurant to give love back to the community. It’s something she has always known she wanted to do with recipes passed down for generations in her back pocket. An institution like Harvest Moon was the perfect fit. While the pandemic was an interesting time to take on a dine-in restaurant, they used this time to perfect the menu, staffing, and feel in the restaurant. Jessie did not come into owning Harvest Moon with the intent to re-invent the wheel. She was a huge fan of Harvest Moon before and wanted to keep it true to the

solid foundation that Mark Smallwood fostered and focused on building a new fresh look by adding her taste and touches. While she has updated the interior artwork to represent her love of Savannah and done some recent repairs after a fire started in the back of house, Harvest Moon still has the reliable, consistent, and warm environment that we all know and love.

Jessie says that the heart of the restaurant is her team of amazing people. The staff is made up of a group of family and friends that know and respect each other with some employees that have worked at the Moon for over 10 years. From Autumn Warthan working the front of house and managing the team to Justin Marshall and Jordan Root in the kitchen running the menu, Jessie says the key to the restaurant’s success “is all about the people”. There are nieces and sisters and daughters and friends working there to make sure everyone feels at home and has an authentic, delicious meal filled with the flavors of classic Harvest Moon recipes to new Savannah staples. If you couldn’t tell, this is a female-owned and operated business that has the community at the core of its values and as we all know, strong women support strong women! Jessie has really focused her attention to community involvement and how she can spread love within and from Harvest Moon. Jessie partners with Harvest Community to collect food donations at the door, offers VA discounts on Veteran’s Day at the restaurant, is hosting a car show May 6th, and is

brainstorming a “Harvest Market” that would support local vendors and bring people downtown to enjoy the beautiful experiences Modesto has to offer. Last, but certainly not least, we have to talk about the food. Everyone has their “go-to” meal at the Moon, but trust us, everything is delicious. The Neil’s Toss is one of the most popular dishes with creamy lime dressing, poached chicken, bacon, avocado, and lots of cheese. This salad is not for the faint of heart, so you can always order a half to save room for the best sweet potato fries in town! Looking to “split and marry”? Harvest Moon does a great combo where you can get a split meal and have it plated for two. For example, you can get the gooey delicious Gorilla Grilled Cheese (with brie, bacon, ham, and apricot jam) split with a Crab Toss to get the best of both worlds with your lunch date. The Bread Pudding French toast is a recipe passed down from her grandmother and is over 100 years old. Plus, as a Georgia native, Jessie says you can’t get enough pecans. (Pee-Can or Pee-Kahn depending on where you’re from) Recipes for the Spinach Salad and the Bread Pudding both boast delicious pecan toppings. From the Fish N Chips to the Dinah Burger to the Crab Sandwich and everything in between, you can’t go wrong here at Harvest Moon. Plus, they have carafes of Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, beer/wine, and full bar to enjoy with your lunch on the patio. What more could you want?

Did you know that the pecan is the only major tree nut that is indigenous to the United States? They are a species of hickory native to the Southeast, but it’s the official state nut of the State of California! Pecan is an Algonquin word, no matter how you pronounce it (PE-KAHN or PEECAN), and while indigenous populations have eaten them for centuries, commercial production of the nut did not begin until the 1880s - much later than other nuts like peanuts, almonds, and cashews. Plus, the growing and cultivation of pecans requires SIGNIFICANTLY less water than its counterparts which is great for the environment because it is native to this land.

Starting in May, our community outreach booth will feature fun, kid-friendly activities, including a DIY car-customizing station! Kids will receive their very own car to decorate and examples of popular paint techniques to draw inspiration from. We provide the materials, and they provide the imagination!

Join us at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market on Thursday, May 18th, from 8AM-1PM.

Our classic car scavenger hunt will have your kids exploring area car show events and searching for clues! Attend the Graffiti Classic, Legends of the Cruise, American Graffiti Festival car shows, and more to participate! Use the QR code below for the full list of participating events. PLAZA MUSIC VIEW MUSIC IN THE PLAZA IS BACK!

There’s nothing quite like hearing live music downtown, whether from a restaurant or bar or Drum Love out in the MoRo Music Garden. One particular event that stands out for me is Music in the Plaza. During the spring and summer, you can catch some of the area’s best musicians playing for free in the 10th Street Plaza on Friday nights. The unofficial kick-off is May the Fourth, Star Wars Celebration. Horizon Point will return to rock the force this year with you. Dress up and bring the whole family for a night of galactic fun from 5-9 pm. There will be vendors and face painting with Kristy Moore, and you might even find the droids you’ve been looking for.

This year, Music in the Plaza will occur on the second through the last Friday of each month, from 7-9 pm. In May, we have some very talented musicians kicking off the season. First up on May 12th is the David Perez Band, a fan favorite sure to get you dancing. This is Mother’s Day weekend, so make a reservation at Fuzio’s or Ralston’s Goat and start celebrating early. Also making their MIP debut, the Midnight Rendezvous Band, featuring a female vocalist playing a mix of reggae, pop, blues, rock, jazz, and R&B. Finishing up the first month of Music in the Plaza will be Valley Heat, who mix blues, rock, and alternative to create a unique musical palette.

Graffiti Summer will be here before you know it, and on June 7th, come out for the Legends of the Cruise 2023 induction and

Park and Shine Car Show. We have a new class to honor, and Third Party will be rockin’ the plaza. Add hundreds of cars, and Kristy Moore will be returning to do face painting. The event runs from 5-9 pm. June 9th is Cruise Night in Modesto, and we have the fabulous Gary Gervase and the Kick Start Blues Band providing the perfect soundtrack for the evening of car-watching and cruising. I have been around hip hop culture since middle school. From the neighbors down the street teaching me how to breakdance, to skateboarding since I was 12, to my friends who were always into making beats in a small bedroom and having their friends come record verses or freestyle, to the friends who got me into graffiti, I just really wanted to learn and be part of the culture. Becoming a turntablist was a dream in high school. I always wanted to be the female version of Dj Shadow, who has been one of my favorite artists and influences music wise.

The Wicked Twitch In The West, MF MAMA!

With over 2000 Twitch followers and counting, this MAMA ain’t taking no mess, but wait a second, I thought Twitch was for gamers?! Let’s see if MY FRIEND, MUCHO FUEGO, MUTHA FUNKIN, MF MAMA can break it down for us.

1. Whats up homiegirrrl!!!  Can you let these people know what you have been doing with your Djing and the Twitch platform?

At the moment, I have just been trying to learn to adapt to all the equipment I have not had the luxury of owning myself. During the pandemic, I started my Twitch channel to have an outlet and give myself a space where I could share the music I love to listen to and play. I never thought that it would grow the way it has, even after we are now able to play live gigs. Twitch and the Twitch community have really allowed me to be myself, meet other like-minded djs and even network to the point of being asked to play for events. It really has been a blessing.

3. I heard some of the stuff you were playing on Twitch, sounds like drum and bass, electronica, trip hop. What would you consider your style to be?

Some of the genres I play on Twitch are: drum and bass, jungle, hardcore, trap, dubstep, hip-hop, rnb, garage, grime, house and chillwave. Sometimes I do practice scratch sessions. My channel grew the most when I started connecting with other drum and bass channels. For the most part, even though the majority of my streams are drum and bass, I still consider myself to be an open format dj, because I love almost every genre of music.

4. Where are some places around town and beyond that you have played at?  Luckily, we have a great community here in Modesto where I have been able to play. I’ve played at Trax on Wax at Speakeasy, Lofi Cocktails, Contentment Brewery and DOMO First Fridays. Thanks to networking on Twitch and breaking out of my introvert ed shell a bit, I have also been able to play in the Bay Area for underground raves and at locations such as Burnt Ramen, Brix, Underground SF, Stamina at F8, Lower Grand Radio and Secret Spot in Oakland.

The weather is cooperating, and downtown is bustling with arts offerings. The farmers’ markets are thriving, and spring events keep us active. It is the perfect time to come down and support local businesses. Downtown is starting to come back to life, and there’s no better way to experience it than by attending the Blue Monday Party on the 2nd and 4th Mondays in May. This month, the party features Gustavo Ramirez and a Cinco De Mayo groove with friends.

As we continue to navigate the pandemic, it’s essential to keep supporting the arts and local businesses. Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson support the Blue Monday Scene, which I appreciate, and we must keep it going. By attending events like Blue Monday, we can help boost the local economy and support our community.

The Blue Monday event features great music and attendance. The House Band includes John Burt on sax, John Adey and Conrad Johnson on bass, Dave Hawkes and Cortez Flores on drums, Eric Benson on keyboards, and Natalia Alexandra as the vo-

calist. Moreover, there are special guests at each event, and the jam is open, so come down and enjoy the music. The band will host on May 8th and 22nd, so mark your calendars.

If you’re looking for something to do outside of Blue Monday, Café Urbano is an excellent spot. It offers a full bar and great food, and they also have DJ dancing Tuesday through Sunday, featuring Latin-based music. The Creole Jazz Kings continue to play at Café Urbano and will be back this month, so make sure to swing by and check them out. There are plenty of other great shows and venues to explore this month. While the Gallo Center has some fantastic performances, other great venues out of town, such as Yoshi’s Oakland for the best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center in Santa Cruz, Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door, and the Sound Room located in Oakland. It’s an excellent opportunity to catch live music and explore new areas.

Prospect Gala

This is something you need to check out.   This is cool local, intelligent theatre, completely prepared by local people in a great small setting where you can really feel like you are a part of the play.   They are working on their new season and they are having a really important fundraiser in one of the coolest buildings in Modesto.

The Prospect Theater Project’s Annual FUNdraiser is June 3! Don your chicest chapeaus and party down to gear up for the 24th season with the Blue Monday Band at the Silos.

Bike to Work Day – May 18

Guess what the tallest hill is in Modesto?   It’s the Briggsmore overpass. That means that Modesto is pretty flat and that makes it good for bicycling.  It is crazy that its only approximately 5 miles from the city limits to downtown and it is super easy to ride to restaurants on the weekend for a Sunday Fun Day or to our local parks.  But heads up though as so many people are texting while driving, it is more dangerous to be on a bike, so that is why it is so important to promote bike safety and awareness.  Drivers, get off your phone!  Cyclists, follow the motor vehicle rules!   It’s pretty simple.   If you bike to work downtown Modesto,  on May 18, there will be snacks and goodies  from 6:30 – 8 am.

5 Minute Workout

Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes family vacations. Unfortunately, many of us forget about our fitness during these trips. However, exercise can be incorporated into your vacation without sacrificing fun. If you have a job requiring travel, finding the time or place to work out can be even more challenging, but there are creative solutions to this problem. If you need more time or need access to workout equipment? That’s where the jump rope comes in. Jumping rope can provide a great workout in a short amount of time. An example of being good at skipping rope would be Sylvester Stalone in the Rocky movies. Rocky! Not to be confused with the Rock for our younger Modesto View readers. In other words, skipping rope with minimal effort is like professional boxers do. I am far from being a professional

when it comes to skipping rope. I just haven’t mastered that constant rhythm of it being almost effortless. On average, you can burn 10-20 calories per minute, making it a high-intensity cardio exercise. If you’re a beginner, start with short intervals and gradually increase the length of your workouts as you build your stamina. Mix things up by trying different jump rope techniques, such as double unders or crisscrosses, to keep your activities challenging and engaging.

Whether planning an extended family vacation or traveling the world for work, it’s essential to prioritize your fitness routine. Pack a jump rope and use it as a quick cardio workout that requires very little space and can be done anywhere at any time. For a fun twist, try using two jump ropes and do Double Dutch with the neighborhood kids. Whatever you decide, remember to make time for exercise during your travels. Remember, some fitness is better than none, and incorporating physical activity into your vacation can make it even more enjoyable. This summer, try to stay active and start your fitness routine with a jump rope. It’s not just a workout. It’s a lifestyle.

The warmer weather is back, which means the Music in the Plaza has also returned. The season of free music events in downtown Modesto happens every Friday at 7 p.m. throughout the summer and fall months.

On May 25th, the Modesto Art Museum and The State present Tokyo Stories, a documentary that spans 400 years of incredibly dynamic Japanese art – ranging from woodblock prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige to Pop Art to contemporary photography and Manga and more. May is finally here, and it’s safe to say that it’s one of the most awaited months of the year. With summer just around the corner, and the school year coming to an end, there’s a lot to look forward to. The flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and the warmth is finally hitting us. It’s the perfect time to spend in Modesto, enjoying the beautiful summer weather.

For all the Star Wars fans out there, you’re in for a treat this May. As we all know, May 4th is celebrated as “May the Fourth be with you.” This phrase was created by none other than George Lucas, who grew up in Modesto. The city celebrates this special day enthusiastically, and you want to experience all the fun. So head over to the 10th street plaza from 5-9 pm to indulge in Star Wars-

If you’re in need of some products, I recommend coming to Modesto Certified Farmers Market. We need to support our local farmers! It takes place Thursdays and Saturdays, 8 am-1 pm. Apart from fresh fruits and vegetables, you can find various items like candles, bouquets, honey, and much more. One Of my favorite things to buy there is a big bag of kettle corn and peaches. The fruit is absolutely delicious. I could not imagine getting better fruits than the ones we have at our farmer’s market. The market is located on 16th Street, right between H and I streets.

I definitely recommend coming and helping our local vendors. I hope your May is filled with laughs and lots of sun!

Watchful Waiting

There’s an energy about spring that makes me want to spring into action. The faster the better, I got so much on my to-dolist!  For me spring is a time of change and renewal, out of the old and into the new! It’s exciting, exhilarating!  The surge of new energy however, makes me impatient. I don’t want to wait in line or sit in traffic. My rushing from one thing to the next makes me more clumsy. I make mistakes. I forget where I put something. I rush into action, talk too fast, make the wrong decisions. Sounds familiar?

Sometimes when I wear myself out like this I go and read one of my wise books. Here’s a quote from the ancient wise book from China, the I Ching, the Book of Changes. The 5th hexagram, titled “Watchful Waiting” says: “Stop, look and listen before you take action. Do one thing at a time or there is real danger. When faced with confusion, maintain control. When faced with a complex situation, realize it cannot be solved quickly or with one

simple solution. Forget this and you slip into indecision, inviting your enemies to move in. Adapt to reality, stand by your convictions, but do not be unreasonable or antagonistic. Confusion is not constant. Use your peaceful moments to compose yourself so your goal remains clearly in sight. No situation is hopeless.  Be sensitive to help, accept it gratefully, and your situation improves.”

Amazing how wise they were in the old days.
