Editor’s Message Yo yo yo Monsters! As the school year comes to an end, it is important to find a good balance between service events and studying for AP exams or finals. While it may be tempting to slack off because summer laziness is fresh in the air, don’t!!! You are so close to being finished with the school term so kick it off with a bang. If you are feeling stressed I highly encourage you to consider submitting an artistic Key Club related artwork to me so I can display it in the newsletter. Additionally, I highly encourage you guys to take the initiative to take pictures at community service events and send them to the officers, if you do so you will receive thirty extra minutes of service. Our very first Franklin Key Club fundraiser will be on the last day of school from one to seven at Boba Tea House so make sure you come out and support. All proceeds we receive makes field trips cheaper for you guys and also goes towards charity. Once again thanks for taking the time to read the newsletter front and back, it means a lot to the Key Club board. Spread the word to your friends to check out our newsletter and help motivate those who feel summer laziness kicking in. In service and friendship, Eileen Eto Franklin Key Club 2015-2016 Bulletin Editor Franklin Key Club 2014-2015 Treasurer

Serena Phen helps take signs out at the California International Marathon
Interview with Serena Phen Q: What was your favorite event and why? A: My favorite event was the event where I volunteered at Fairytale Town and [it] was around the winter time so there was a ton of Christmas spirit spread throughout the place and my job started as being dressed up as an elf and [greeting] people and then to help with arts and crafts, it was just so much fun seeing the kids enjoy a place I used to enjoy when I was younger. Q: What are your favorite hobbies ? A: My favorite hobbies are to swim and dive as well as listen to music and talk/hang with friends. Q: Why is volunteering/ community service so important to you? A: Volunteering is important to me because it helps me be more involved and turns my typical boring weekends into going out and cheering or a race or giving back to the community. Q: What do you enjoy/like the most about Key Club? A: What I enjoy most about Key Club are the members, everyone is so nice and cheerful and it’s a ton of fun spending time with people who have the same goals as me.

“All in all the Kiwanis One Day Event was a great time and it was inspiring seeing Key Clubbers, Circle K Members, and Kiwanis Advisors working together to clean up the Kiwanis Family House. I was grateful for all the hard work the different clubs in our division put forth to achieve that goal and was extremely impressed by the perseverance demonstrated by our own Franklin Key Club Members, including our own Kiwanis Advisor, Mr. Ortega. In the event we worked to beautify the nature around the Kiwanis Family House, which involved pulling weeds, spreading out Preen, and spreading out mulch. Through all of the collective efforts from the some 200 people who joined in from areas like Southern California and schools like Mira Loma, I'm very proud to say that we have been able to make the Kiwanis Family House a better place, and the Kiwanis One Day Event a huge success. “ -David Guo

Kiwanis One Day this year was very fun and exciting! It was a lot of hard work cleaning up the Kiwanis Family House, but I enjoyed being part of a community and meeting people from other Kiwanis clubs. My favorite part of the event was meeting new people and working with them for a day of service! - Ralph Romea

“The event was overall a ton of fun! In the morning, I helped racers register and prepare for the race then shortly after, I assisted them with being able to check their results on these really cool computers that they had set up. Top three runners in their age groups received a prize so it was really fun seeing the reactions of people who made it. The highlight of the event for me would have to be the fact that almost all the users who attempted to use the computers thought it was touch screen, so me having to explain what a mouse pad to a majority of people was pretty funny. “-Serena Phen

“I actually passed out medals to the marathon runners and cheered them on as they went by us. I think my favorite moment was when there was during the mile "marathon" for kids; we passed out a different medal to all these small children. They were so cute.” –Brian Chiu

“There were many highlights throughout the Elliot Ranch Spring Fling but I would have to say my favorite part of the whole event was when the DJ played the Cha Cha Slide and all of the kids came up to the blacktop and danced” - Michelle Ho Michelle Ho records customer orders

“My favorite part of this event was when a rush of orders for hotdogs were called and at the same time rain started to pour down. It was nice to keep people happy with food in their stomachs even if we were drenched in water. I also loved seeing little kids taking the initiative to also help us wrap hotdogs, too! It was really adorable and heart warming! “ Caressa Wong

“My favorite part of the Elliot Ranch Spring Fling was that I was able to help make the event a success by selling food to the children. Also, I loved that even when it began to rain, we continued to do our job and it was fun volunteering at this event. I will definitely be coming again next year! “ Gurnoor Sahota

“At the GO Fest, I was assigned to keep my eye on the inflatable soccer game and to give small prizes to the children when they were finished playing. My favorite part of the event was when a little boy constantly came back to play on my inflatable. he would talk to me and he was funny and so adorable. he made this event enjoyable for me“ Suellena Ji
