Editor’s Message Hey Monsters, As our first term goes by this school year I encourage you guys to start off your school year with a bang. Make sure to maintain grades and maintain extracurricular activity, such as community service with Key Club! Besides attending community service events I highly encourage you attend the Grassroots Soccer Tournament which we have annually. It will be a fun way to support the club and meet other high schoolers in the district. If you have any questions regarding the fundraiser don’t hesitate to email officers, contact information is at the back of the newsletter. I would also like you guys to consider submitting art to the newsletter. Even if you guys do not do traditional forms of art, any form that acknowledges Key Club love and service would be greatly appreciated. The Great Wall of Spirit can only be maintained with all of your help so please consider submitting something. Without further ado I’ll leave you to reading the rest of the newsletter and thanks so much for reading! In service and friendship, Eileen Eto

New members, please make sure to turn in your membership forms; returning members, please make sure to make the annual $15 membership fee to the concession stand. Continue checking the forums because we have tonsssss of events, even ones on the weekdays. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, regardless of the topic. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!

Web Head’s Message

Hey Monsters!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Kajal and I’m serving as your 2015-2016 Web Head! Before I get to the important information about our new club website, let me tell you a little about myself. I’m a senior this year, so if you want any advice about school, I’m always open. I am also a HUGE Potterhead and OUAT fan, so hit me up if you wanna fangirl about literally anything! But enough about me. This year, there has been a big change in our club website. Some of you may remember the old website hosted on freehostia. It was pretty slow, difficult to update, and hard to use. That’s why this year, we have moved our website to http:// franklinkeyclub.tumblr.com/ ! It is sooo much easier for you, the members, to find information and not to mention much faster for me to update. There’s a place for you to ask questions, submit photos if you want them to be featured on the website, check your hours, and much, much more. Please check it out and let me know if you have any suggestions for me to improve the website! In addition, I’m looking for 2 or 3 people to join a Web Committee to help me run this site and update information. If you are interested please contact me at kajalmaran.d7s@gmail.com or let one of the other officers know. I look forward to seeing what you all think! In service and friendship, Kajal Maran

Recycling Head’s Message

Hello fellow Key Clubbers, This upcoming month of September, recycling collections and sorting parties will begin, and I hope every single one of you participates because it is the way to be green! A quick and easy tip to speed up the pace for recycling collection is to have a partner help you dump and carry the bottles because everything is easier with an extra set of hands! Also, to save time, make sure you bring extra bags with you when you start collecting and have all the bags filled up completely with bottles and cans. If possible, try to eliminate as much excess trash and liquid from the bags. All these pointers will later be discussed in a tutorial that will be posted up on the Franklin Key Club website and forums. I really hope everyone will help out and dedicate their time in keeping the school campus clean. In the end, it should create a worthy cause of preventing plastic bottles and aluminum cans from going into the trash heap because every single one of those can produce a brand new useful thing. Did you all know that recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours? This fact shows how recycling has unlimited power in conserving and reusing energy, so be a part of something that takes a step forward toward an eco-friendly environment. In service and friendship, Caressa Wong

Spotlight Monster of the Month: David Guo School has started, which means Key Club meetings are happening again! Just a quick reminder, Franklin Key Club meetings happen every Monday after school at HK-4, so make sure to attend and congratulate our September Member of the Month, David Guo! Even if you cannot attend the meetings to meet David, you can often find him gaming on League of Legends, playing basketball, doing homework, or listening to K-Pop. David appreciates the cohesiveness and cooperativeness as one community within Key Club, so he often bonds with other Key Clubbers at club service events and DCMs. Working with the Division Leadership Team last December has also helped him improve his leadership skills. His favorite service event is Caring with Crafts because he enjoyed the open atmosphere during the various activities provided. In fact, David volunteers often because of the new people he can work with and the new relationships he can create within the community. Additionally, volunteering allows him to immediately see his impact on his community. He becomes happy and grateful that when he makes a PTP doll or a Children’s Hospital card, a child in need would able to hold that doll or read that card.

Congratulations on being September Member of the Month! I appreciate your ability to communicate with other Key Clubbers beyond the club level, especially at the DCMs. Thank you for your wonderful service and continue growing as a key leader! 1. David Guo helps at Caring with Crafts

Breakaways Mission: Possible Photos taken by: Irene Dich, Eileen Eto, Angie Yan

At the event “we helped children make salad tosser art.” My favorite part of the event was “seeing the rain fall, California needs the water” and it was exciting to see it rain despite the sun being out. This event was unique because “I [had] never made salad tosser art before.” -Angie Yan Angie Yan puts a plate in the salad tosser so the children could decorate it with paint splatters

“At the event I was assigned to the face painting station. My job was to let children paint their own faces and my face with the watercolor pencils. However some of the kids wanted me to paint their faces. My favorite part of the event was painting because I like drawing. I also found it funny when children hobbled over after attending the water events. Teeth chattering, they would request I paint their faces and then apologize after, it was really cute. This event was special to me because there were a lot of happy children.” - Irene Dich Irene Dich paints a child’s face at the face painting station

Ice Cream Safari Photos taken by: Mike Lam

“Ice Cream Safari was really awesome because I got to work at the facepainting station. I really loved painting the little kids faces and watching them giggle as my paintbrush tickled their cheeks. This event was special to me because I love working with kids at service events and the Ice Cream Safari gave me the opportunity to do so while enjoying some delicious ice cream! “-Kajal Maran Kajal Maran paints an adorable child’s face at the Sacramento Zoo

Elk Grove Multicultural Festival Photos taken by: Sunshine Hurtienne “I was at the kids activity area letting kids draw and put together puzzles. I think my favorite part was talking to the kids as they would draw and tell me about their pictures of the flag of their home country they were drawing. I generally like events that interact with kids because they always have those crazy imaginations that make them fun to talk to and help out. I don’t remember exactly the names but there were definitely an abundance of different cultures, some of which I hadn’t heard of prior.” - Kristen Kwong Kristen Kwong and Silvia Lee work at the kid station, helping kids draw flags.

“At the Elk Grove Multicultural Festival, me and the Key Club volunteers ran the coloring booth, where kids of all ages could color in a flag with their nationalities’ colors/design. We then hung up these flags around the booth for everyone passing by to see. My favorite part of the event was getting to meet people of all cultures and races and exploring different styles of music, art, and food. This event was special to me because it was something me and my friends have been looking forward to for a while. We wanted to experience the different cultures at the festival and educate ourselves about the world around us. Out of all the cultures, my favorite one was Filipino!” -Sunshine Hurtienne Sunshine Hurtienne pins up different flags for passerbys’ to see
