Anatomy of a Fashion Shoot It all begins with a text, email or phone call from a wedding pro who has this “great idea for a fashion shoot” and it evolves from there. This particular issue, Randy Shamel from Artistry pitched the idea for our “Return to Elegance” theme. I loved it! From there, we organized a team to make this idea come to life. Photographer Kelly Park, planner Maureen Renée, Randy and I got together at Randy’s studio and had, what I like to call, a “creative dump” session. We all sat and feverishly took notes of all the impulsive words we were blurting out – Opulent! Ballroom! Crystals! Sparklers! Gold! Platinum! Satin! Bows! Candles! Velvet! Luggage! Getaway car! Puppy! Yes, puppy. Inspiration boards were created so we could see our ideas on paper. We carefully chose our models, visited multiple bridal salons to find the “perfect” gowns for our theme and selected formal wear and party dresses for our groom and supporting bridesmaids. We curated a collection of attire for our models as well as our wedding ballroom which literally took center stage for the shoot. Maureen created a meticulous timeline and organized all the wedding vendors who contributed. Kelly Park caught the magic unfolding the day of the shoot and voila! As you page through this issue of Saint Louis Bride, I hope you find the inspiration that leads to your own real-life wedding day photoshoot!

1 KELLY PARK Kelly Park has been photographing couples and families since 2004. “Being a part of this Saint Louis Bride issue was a huge honor, I loved the ‘Return to Elegance’ theme and am excited for the gorgeous weddings to come. Grateful to work alongside an amazing talented team! Also thrilled to have our UK Labrador, Louie, make a cameo appearance.” A frequent contributor to Saint Louis Bride, this is Kelly’s second cover and fashion spread.
2 RANDY SHAMEL Randy Shamel has been designing award-winning florals as the lead designer of Artistry Florist and Event Design since 1984. His passion for beautiful florals and details to weddings have been bringing cherished memories to thousands of brides over 35 years. Randy’s work is featured on the cover and in our fashion spread beginning on page 146. “As I was thinking

back on the past eighteen months and what I was missing about weddings during this pandemic was the beautiful, formal, over-the-top weddings. I wanted to see the return of the formal ballroom with crystal chandeliers, cascading flowers and candlelight, with all of the details of fine stationary, place settings and textured linens. This is what sparked my idea for this photo shoot. Collaborating with Maureen Renée and Kelly Park has been a wonderful experience.”

by the unique stories of each of her clients and passionate about creating unmatched experiences for every special event in their lives. “I loved the opportunity to work with so many of our beloved local creatives on this collaborative shoot. After such a tough year, we genuinely wanted to highlight their creativity and dedication to elevating our industry in St. Louis.”

Her first years were spent planning and designing weddings for a luxury event firm in St. Louis. After launching Maureen Renée Events in late 2018, she took on the new role of founder and creative director. She is inspired

Jennifer and her team strive to create bridal beauty that will not only be unforgettable, but will last from the first kiss to the very last toast. Jennifer, Dominique and Sally did the hair and makeup for our cover and fashion spread, “Return to Elegance.” “We had so much fun collaborating and creating the looks for this stunning shoot! We knew it was going to be truly epic based on the vendors. I hope you all love it as much as we do,” said Jennifer.
5 ZACH DALIN Zach Dalin, published and awardwinning wedding photographer assisted on his first wedding in 2013; and fast forward almost a decade later, his images have been featured in several prominent national and local magazines. Zach photographed the chef feature, “Love At First Bite,” beginning on page 106. “I love the attention to detail, color, texture in all of these plates. We have such talented chefs in our city!”

“Often with all the planning and little details that go into creating this monumental day, sometimes the true meaning of this special day gets subdued, so remember to keep it the focus. Being a bride that is also a part of the wedding industry, my second piece of advice is to create a relationship with your vendors and trust them. They want your day to be as beautiful as you want it to be. They will be your biggest hype team and genuinely want the best for you on your wedding day.” —ADVICE FOR BRIDES-TO-BE

Our families were meeting for the first time and we wanted to make it easier for everyone to get comfortable and get to know one another. A Caribbean Honeymoon Dream Escape to an All Inclusive Resort BY JACKIE TUCKER
W
eddings are wonderful. We can all agree on that. But can we also agree that they’re a little stressful to plan? After months of endless decisions, how great would it be if the only choice you had to make was “pool or beach?” That’s where an all-inclusive honeymoon comes in. “Our top Caribbean destinations right now are Jamaica, St. Lucia, Antigua, St. Martin, and Nassau,” says Mike Shellhase from Travel Haus St. Louis. From champagne breakfasts and beachside cocktails to sexy plunge pools and couple’s spa treatments, all your honeymoon must-haves are covered at an all-inclusive luxury vacation spot. Leave the details up to the resort, and simply focus on each other on your sun-soaked Caribbean getaway. EXCELLENCE OYSTER BAY, JAMAICA Jamaica is a honeymoon favorite for a reason. With its soul-stirring sunsets and warm, friendly smiles at every turn, the island is an enchanted paradise. In addition to the beaches it’s known for, the island’s rolling mountains adorned with lush foliage are home to lazy rivers that meander down into gorgeous cascading waterfalls. “It’s one of my favorite places to go,” says Abbey Meyer, Travel Agent at Travel Haus St. Louis. “If my honeymooners want to go to Jamaica, I send them to Excellence Oyster Bay.” 98
WWW.BRIDESTL.COM • FALL/WINTER 2021
Excellence Resort at Oyster Bay is an all-inclusive, adults-only luxury resort nestled on a private tropical peninsula, providing easy access to the gorgeous Montego Bay and its local mangrove lagoons. Relaxing in the sun is absolutely on the agenda, but if you want to experience something truly magical (and super romantic) then take one of their nighttime excursions to the island’s bioluminescent Luminous Lagoon. There are only a few places in the world to see this incredible phenomenon, and Jamaica’s Luminous Lagoon is said to be the largest and brightest. As the only all-inclusive resort on this side of the island, you’ll get adultsonly privacy – perfect for a romantic Caribbean honeymoon escape. “The beaches on St. Martin are spectacular,” says Shellhase. “And from there you can fly or ferry over to St. Barts or some of the other islands. I anticipate it’s going to be a major hot spot over the next few years.” Culture and romance radiate off the island breezes as you stroll through the resort, which is inspired by the island’s CaribbeanEuropean and French roots. Set against a backdrop of lush mountains and panoramic beaches, you can indulge in simple pleasures like a soak in an oceanfront whirlpool, a couples massage in a world-class spa, or a delicious meal that’s infused with Creole, French and African flavor influences – after all, you are in the culinary capital of the Caribbean. After dinner, relax in your romantic honeymoon suite with swim out access, ocean, mountain or marina views. No matter which room you choose, everything is included and taken care of. COVID-19 TRAVEL TIPS The COVID-19 pandemic has been an ever-evolving situation when it comes to travel, and its effects continue to linger. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning your honeymoon travels. 1. Bookmark the CDC website (www.cdc.gov/travel) to stay up to date with travel advisories. 2. Even if you are fully vaccinated, face coverings or masks may still be required at a number of locations, including airports. Be sure to carry a few with you just in case. 3. While hotels are still taking extra precautions, it’s not a bad idea to wipe down high touch areas with disinfectant wipes once you check in. 4. Purchase trip cancellation insurance in case your travels are affected by COVID-19. 5. Check with your insurance company to see if they cover illnesses abroad. If not, consider purchasing travel insurance.

SANDALS ROYAL BAHAMIAN, NASSAU Sitting on the 21-mile-long island of New Providence, the city of Nassau is the vibrant hub of the Bahamas. With sweeping white-sand shores, crystal-clear waters, flavorful island cuisine and exciting night life, it really is a couple’s paradise. When visiting Nassau, Schellhase recommends staying at the Sandals Royal Bahamian. A sophisticated blend of European elegance and exotic island escapades, honeymooners will find everything they need for romance in this glamorous all-inclusive resort. Step right onto the beach from a walk-out suite at one of the resort’s two grand towers or find your private paradise with the peace and tranquility of the quaint cottages at the Royal Village. Take a dip in one of the resort’s sky-sized colonnaded pools that overlook the ocean, indulge in a massage at the award-winning Red Lane Spa, then dine out at one of the ten specialty restaurants, including everything from classic French cuisine to the spicy Caribbean flavors that the Bahamas are famous for. And if that isn’t enough, the resort also includes its own offshore private island. Just minutes away from the resort, you can either take a private ferry or paddle over to the island yourself on a kayak. Enjoy its two secluded beaches, swim-up bars, whirlpools and the region’s best seafood house. When you need a break from the sun, hide away inside a private cabana and indulge in your own slice of island paradise. Shellhase adds one important caveat for all honeymoon travel right now. “Every island has different Covid restrictions. Some of them have curfew times where malls and shops and bars close at 5 or 6 pm. Chartered activities and excursions can be limited, too. So, make sure you have a good travel agent who is in the know.” (See side bar for more helpful travel tips as the world begins to open back up.) ♥

"I don't know about you, but when I think of summer I think of morning mimosas, sunshine, and all the color summer has to offer. That was exactly where the inspiration behind this shoot came from. The essence of summer is carried throughout with all citrus you could dream of. We decided to take a risk and choose a bold color, yellow, as our main attraction. Not a color you would think could be so elegant when paired with touches of blue and pink. The bold yellow cake by was the perfect pop with the groom's baby blue suit – it just screams summer. Loveland Estates provided the perfect setting to bring a boho twist to this shoot from the rattan chairs to the incredible whimsical florals. This citrusinspired shoot ended with the most decadent meal provided by Priscilla Cooks."

From a year that was so stale and depressing, I wanted to brighten up the wedding industry. I think the Mexican culture knows how to celebrate and embrace those bright and bold colors, textiles and heritage. Sometimes vibrant colors, brilliant flowers and a little bit of tacos and tequila are just what we all need to get through this past year. We live in a pretty spectacular place where we are celebrated for including all cultures and embracing their heritages. We are the melting pot for all cultures. I wanted to push couples to think outside the norm and go for that bright pink or that fun floral pot. Your wedding doesn't need to be cookie cutter, it just needs to be YOU!

Let The Little Guys Deliver for Your Big Day Include these delicious foods in your celebration to impress your guests and support local businesses after a challenging year
I
f your wedding was planned for 2020 and you’re reading this magazine, there’s a good chance your original plans were altered or postponed. It’s estimated that was the case for about half of the 2 million weddings Americans typically host every year. The pandemic greatly affected all of us, of course, but some small businesses especially felt the pinch. Many independent, local companies here (see more in sidebar) make wonderful food products you can use for every event from shower to welcome basket to reception to the day-after brunch. Consider integrating their tasty treats into your festivities to show off some St. Louis originals—and give these talented and hardworking family-owned businesses a boost.
THE CARAMEL HOUSE The Caramel House is a house you want to visit. Owner Janet Schulman has been making all things caramel for 12 years and opened her shop in Olivette six years ago. She makes 24 different flavors of the individual caramel “kisses,” caramel sauce, turtles, caramel apples (year-round) and pretzels, English toffee, and caramel popcorn, as well as four other fresh popcorn flavors. Many more yummy goodies are available, and Schulman’s secret caramel recipe is known as “the caramel that doesn’t stick” to your teeth, yet it’s every bit as caramel-y and scrumptious. Everything at The Caramel House is peanutfree and the products are officially certified as being gluten-free by the Celiac Foundation. Schulman has four employees and is proud that The Caramel House is 100% women-owned and St. Louis-grown. “We are all about staying local,” Schulman said. “All of our ingredients and packaging are locallysourced. Pecans from Missouri are the only nuts 120

we use, and everything is American-made.” The Caramel House creates lots of corporate gifts, which can translate well to gifts for wedding celebrations. Assorted caramels in various-sized boxes can work as a wedding favor or gift at a bridal shower. Unbreakable jars of caramel sauce would be great in a welcome basket for out-of-town guests. Schulman suggests a new line of items for groomsmen gifts that capitalize on a popular trend-products made with bourbon. “We make caramels with flavors of bourbon vanilla, bourbon apple jack & bourbon fire cinnamon, as well as our Liquid Gold Bourbon Caramel Sauce, and bourbon caramel corn,” said Schulman. She is immensely grateful for the generosity and support of her customers in helping her through 2020. But she also loved being able to provide sweets to those who came by the shop. “It was a lonely time for many people,” Schulman said. “I enjoyed being the ‘sugar bartender’ to people who came to get treats to feel less isolated and just needed a little pick me up.” The Caramel House shop is located in Olivette at 9639 Olive Boulevard. Items can also be ordered online at thecaramelhouse.com.
FREDDIE LEE’S GHETTO SAUCE St. Louis is a barbecue town, and gifting some locally-made, acclaimed barbecue sauce to your guests would be a great representation of the Lou. Freddie Lee James Jr. has been cooking up his sauces for over a decade, but 2020 was a tough one. “Last year almost crushed us,” James Jr. said. “Online sales helped keep us afloat, but it was scary.” The Ghetto Sauce (also labeled as “American Gourmet Sauce” in some stores) comes in spicy and mild flavors and isn’t just for meat. It tastes
great in chili and baked beans, on salmon, even pizza. But Freddie’s favorite use of the sauce? “I love it on spaghetti,” James Jr. said. “It just takes spaghetti to another level.” He also loves using the sauce in meatloaf and stuffed peppers. Couples can ask caterers and chefs to use the sauce in their cooking for the reception dinner, and may want to display a sign noting the use of this small-business, local product. The 18-ounce jars would be a great addition to a welcome basket, or a bachelor party gift. Having a backyard rehearsal dinner? Use the sauce on the grill, then send some jars home with the wedding party and guests. James is a well-respected sauce maker, as he also produces sauces for several popular restaurants in the St. Louis area. Ghetto Sauce received a small business award in 2017 and was featured at the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City at the annual Taste of Missouri. He has six employees and his wife Deborah is his business partner. The sauces are gluten-free and contain no high-fructose corn syrup. “I only put love in my product,” said James. “I don’t put anything in the sauce that I wouldn’t eat myself.” The sauces are available at many Schnucks, Straub’s and Dierbergs locations and some independent butcher shops, among other retail outlets. Order online at freddieleesgourmetsauces.com.
IRENE’S HOMEMADE GRANOLA Another delicious product made with love began with Irene Reinkemeyer’s love for her husband. About eight years ago, he developed heart issues and she was hoping to find healthy foods he loved. “He loves oats and I looked for a healthy granola, but couldn’t find a good one,” Reinkemeyer said. “So I started making my own. My kids and their friends loved it, then I gave some

in University City. “You can’t get any fresher,” said Kristie Smyrniotis. “There’s no product sitting in a warehouse or a distributor involved. Everything is roasted and packed right here.” The nuts are pure, all-natural, and Kosherapproved. They also make peanut, almond, and peanut and dark chocolate butters, and offer hand-dipped milk and dark chocolate covered nuts, as well as dried fruits and candy. Like many other small businesses, internet sales were key for Mound City in 2020. “We feel very blessed that we were able to stay open last year,” Smyrniotis said. Offering baskets and tins of a variety of products for corporations has always been a big part of Mound City’s business, and that helped help through the pandemic. These baskets would be a huge hit for guests that have traveled to celebrate with you. But there are lots of options of smaller, individual treats for your family and friends as well. “We have three-ounce packages of cashews, deluxe mixed nuts, pistachios and the plaza mix, which is nuts and dried fruit. The deluxe mix is our most popular,” said Smyrniotis. On the sweeter side, for a wedding favor or treat at a bridal luncheon place setting, the chocolate mint lentils would be ideal. “They are not beans, but about the same size as lentils,” Smyrniotis said. “It’s a soft chocolate mint inside a hard shell—a pretty mix of purple, pink, green and white candies.” Another option for these occasions is the Jordan almonds, either in superfine white or fine pastel colors. Couples can customize the bags with their own stickers, if they’d like. Kristie’s parents, Byron and Stacy Smyrniotis, have been working together at Mound City Shelled Nut Company for over 30 years, under the same roof. Their small team is committed to fresh, quality products and can also do special orders. Check out all the products at moundcity.com.
MOUND CITY SHELLED NUT COMPANY
All of these fine and delicious products could also combine for a satisfying late night sweet and savory bar at a wedding reception. We’re fortunate to have such unique, quality products made in the St. Louis area by such hardworking and lovely small business owners.
Mound City Shelled Nut Company has been operating since 1917 (!) and owned by the Smyrniotis family since 1973. Mound City is rare in that it roasts its wide variety of nuts on site, at their store on 7831 Olive Boulevard 122

A WIN-WIN FOR WEDDINGS AND SMALL BUSINESSES
Janet Schulman, owner of The Caramel House, said the small business community supporting each other through a tough time was a silver lining last year. “Local businesses really helped each other, sharing resources, back and forth, and supporting each other on social media,” Schulman said. “It really unified us locally. It’s the magic of living in a big city that works like a small town.” ♥

as Christmas gifts, then people kept asking for more.” After proving popular at farmers markets, Irene’s Homemade Granola can now be found at Dierbergs, Freddie’s Market, Vincent’s Market, Global Foods and the Women’s Exchange. Also a woman-owned company, Irene’s Homemade Granola employees consist of herself and one other person, in addition to her husband, who manages the books. There are five blends of granola to choose from, all variations named for Reinkemeyer’s two children. Cole’s Vegan Blend is a peanutbased blend. The Haley Original Blend is a sweet honey almond-based blend. Haley’s Vegan Blend offers the same sweet taste as the Original, but coconut oil is used instead of butter to accommodate vegans. There are also versions of the Original Haley Blend and Cole’s Blend with dark chocolate on top. The granola is uniquely soft and chewy--very different from the often-dry (and less healthy) national brands. Though made with healthy ingredients, some fans of the granola compare the various versions to tasting like an oatmeal cookie, a Payday bar and an Almond Joy. “I want to provide a snack made with healthy ingredients that will satisfy and keep you full,” Reinkemeyer said. All the granola is egg and wheat-free, and honey-based with a little brown sugar. Adorable three-ounce containers would be perfect for wedding favors, showers and bachelorette weekends. “You could also stack three of the smaller containers and tie them with a bow in your wedding colors, to give a variety of flavors,” said Reinkemeyer. The larger 11-ounce containers would be appreciated by hotel guests for a morning or on-the-go snack. “I also had a client who bought the granola in bulk and made her own bags to give to family and friends for a pre-wedding hike,” Reinkemeyer said. The granola would also be a delicious addition to a wedding brunch as well. You can also purchase the granola online at Ireneshomemadegranola.com.

The First Year of Marriage: How to Bank on its Success Investing in your relationship from the get-go will reap big rewards
T
here’s nothing like that feeling of walking down the aisle with your new spouse, just married, surrounded by everyone closest to you. Celebrating your union at the reception is a wonderful time and all your planning and efforts were so worth it. The honeymoon gives you both time to relax and enjoy each other. Then real life begins, as you make a home and a life together. With the newness and excitement the first year of marriage brings, with it can come many challenges. As much as you worked on the wedding, your marriage will need constant attention. It may not be the most romantic way to look at it, but think of your marriage as a bank, or a company with you and your spouse equally in charge. “Show up as your best self for your
124
WWW.BRIDESTL.COM • FALL/WINTER 2021
spouse, not just for your co-workers and friends,” said Heather Raznick, MSW, LCSW, at Psychotherapy Specialists. “Plan for talks between the two of you as you would think of a board meeting, with you two the copresidents of your marriage,” Raznick said. Investing time and effort into the following areas will increase your chances of a happy and successful partnership.
REALISTIC PROJECTIONS “I was so excited to play house,” Claire Lillis remembered upon return from her honeymoon. “But, it’s real life, not play. It was difficult because before when we would get in a fight or disagree, I would vent to my two best girlfriends, who had been my roommates.
So when Dave and I would see each other or talk the next time it was easier, because the situation had been diffused. When you are living with someone it’s much different. The person you want to vent about is the person living with you!” The idealized picture of marriage some newlyweds have can come to a screeching halt. “In the first year, the lust wears off and reality sets in,” Raznick said. Couples often have an expectation that the excitement is going to stay at this high level. There may be some ‘magical thinking’ going on-that it will always be blissful, and that you are the unique couple that will always stay like this.” Laura Schneider was also eager to move into the new house she and her new husband had

purchased together before the wedding. “It was great-we worked on the house together and everything was ours, not mine or his,” Schneider said. “But after two months, the realities begin to set in. Who does the laundry? Who is in charge of grocery shopping and cooking? Do I really have to dust and vacuum? We eventually made a chore chart together and both began to feel like we had fair shares in the responsibilities of owning a home.” Often couples don’t think about the practical matters of day-to-day living before sharing a home. “When you first marry, you are defining your personality as a couple, as a young family,” said Bryan Thorson, MSW, LCSW of Thorson Therapy, LLC. “’Who’s doing what?’” is a sit-down conversation couples need to have as early as possible.” Schneider also learned some things about herself as a roommate. “I’ve been surprised at the things I have had to let go, with my perfectionist behaviors. The bed does not have to be impeccably made--at least he tried. You have to learn to not be bothered by the little stuff. In the big scheme of things, ask yourself: does this really matter?” Looking back, Aaron Reinberg said, “I think it’s important to be a realist about relationships. It is challenging to move past the honeymoon phase and into everyday life.” It was some of her beloved’s living habits that she needed to get used to, or at least not take as a personal affront. “He will leave the toilet seat up, ‘forget’ to take out the trash, leave dishes in the sink… the list goes on. But it’s helpful to remember that 99.9% of the time it is NOT because he doesn’t love you. That phrase is my mantra.”
BALANCING THE BOOKS Along with the “Who does what?” question regarding household duties, there is the “How much money do we have and how are we going to manage it?” question. “The first year of marriage is often the first year of major investments, such as a new home or car,” Thorson said. “In addition to the daily finances, bills and credit cards. These are some important financial matters couples should discuss to prevent any unpleasant surprises.” Colleen Harrison suggested something she and her husband started doing a little later than she probably would have preferred—planning a time once a week to pay bills together. “Have a set time to pay bills together so that both parties truly understand the money coming in and going out,” Harrison said. “Trying to start that three years into a marriage is too late and one party bears the burden of all the monetary stress!”
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS This is perhaps the part of your “business” that has the most impact on all the other 126
WWW.BRIDESTL.COM • FALL/WINTER 2021
departments-how often and in what manner you talk to each other. Getting back to that board meeting between you and your spouse, Raznick said couples should set aside time each week to talk. “Do an assessment— what’s working and what’s not working? Troubleshooting gives hope, rather than misery. Use this talk to hit the reset button if you need to,” said Raznick. Thorson emphasized that the communication should not only happen, but happen in a constructive way. Some rules that you may have heard before, but bear repeating: “No name-calling or character assassination,” Thorson said. “Also, try to start your statements with “I feel” rather than “you”—it removes the blame so your spouse won’t feel so defensive.” Thorson said that just like your job, marriage requires daily work and focus.
PROBLEM SOLVING Lack of communication can lead to a crisis, or at least make a small issue snowball into a bigger one. That’s why you need to schedule regular talks with your partner like you would put a doctor’s appointment on the calendar. Thinking of the big picture has helped Schneider when she and her husband hit a rough patch. “You will learn how you handle difficult times that will define your marriage--will you get up and leave? Tell him you never should have married? Or do you stay and say ‘I’m sorry’ because it was the person you made a vow to. For better or worse, right? Marriage gives you a sense of security, a best friend, and the biggest blessing of all... a person to love who loves you just as much.” Even when you may be mad them. It can be very difficult to resolve conflict when things get emotional, Thorson said. “But conflict will happen. Some people would rather avoid that attempt to resolve conflicts. It’s O.K. to leave it for a bit and come back when you have a cooler head, but it won’t go away on its own,” said Thorson. And even if you aren’t arguing, life can throw you some curveballs, as Monica Pelham remembered. “We had a few rough events in our first six months-- a flooded basement, a home break-in, a totaled car,” Pelham said. “This was all with my husband in a new, commission-based job and me in medical school with lots of student loans. It was difficult at the time, but looking back we now think, ‘If we could make it through all that, we can make it through anything.’”
MAKING REGULAR DEPOSITS Now you and your spouse are a unit. But with that, “Your time is now under scrutiny-separate time, together time, recreation time, household roles and responsibilities,” Raznick said. Newlywed Schneider and her husband are trying to strike the balance of doing activities
they both enjoy together, while valuing each other’s independent time as well. “I like meeting up with my girlfriends after work on Fridays and he plays in baseball and basketball leagues,” Schneider said. “I’ve taken up golf, or I’d be single for the summer,” she joked. “It’s important to let the other person do what they enjoy.” Edie Paine’s first year of marriage is a time she recalls fondly and wishes she would have appreciated more then. “I didn’t realize it would go so quickly. The first year of marriage flew by. We bought a house and Jason started a new job. I remember thinking, ‘We should enjoy this first year, and travel and do a lot of things together we might not be able to do later.’ But I started to get anxious about our ages and having kids. I regret that we didn’t do more together before having children to solidify our coupledom. My advice to newlyweds these days would be, if possible, wait until your second anniversary to start expanding your family.” Now a mother of two young children. Colleen Harrison agreed. “Know that if you are going to have kids, now is the only time for the two of you together, so cherish it! Appreciate date nights because once you have kids they are hard to fit in, but also a necessity,” Harrison said. “Don’t stop dating after marriage,” Raznick advised. “Maybe your husband used to really scope out the best restaurant for you two to go to, and now you pick up a chicken from Sam’s for dinner.” That’s fine sometimes, but not all the time. “One of marriage’s appeals is that it is safe and secure -you connect in a reliable, dependable and predictable way,” said Raznick. “But that is not sexy or novel. You need to find ways to inject excitement and specialness into your relationship.” This is especially where you can think of your marriage as a personal bank account, that requires regular deposits to keep the account active and healthy. Thorson explained: “Deposits are rapport-building interactions with each other. If the withdrawals outdo the deposits, what is there to draw from?”
CHECKING IN A skilled businessperson is continually negotiating and renegotiating to better the bottom line. Similarly, your marriage is an everevolving, ongoing process. “No couple is perfect, nor will they ever be,” Raznick said. “If you put a whole lot into it, you will get a whole lot out of it. Focus on each other and don’t take each other for granted.” And finally, there is nothing wrong with outsourcing if you need to. The first year of marriage is a big adjustment and a professional, licensed therapist can help you navigate through it and all the years to come. ♥

Her passion for thrifting started at a young age with many cherished weekend trips with her father. As a family-oriented momma of four, she is passing this legacy along to future generations and to anyone seeking inspiration within her community. Michelle spends her time thrifting, repurposing, and creating great spaces for her home and the homes of others. Michelle is quick to invite others to her porch to enjoy a glass of tea, but it is usually a bottle of Coke that you find in her hand. In every interaction, Michelle wants people to feel valued and inspired. She is quick to remind people of their worth and inspire them with the truth that it doesn’t take a lot of money to live your most lovely life. Saint Louis Bride had the opportunity to chat with the “Porch Lady,” Michelle Holman of My Thrifted Porch and here’s what she had to say…

MH: I live on 12 beautiful acres in the middle of the woods with my husband of 23 years, our 4 children, our 2 Beagle pups, and a plethora of forest animals. Our family of four transitioned to a family of six via two beautiful unique domestic infant adoptions. Garage sales, flea markets, antique stores, thrift stores, and auctions call my name and speak my language. I have a unique gift to see potential and beauty in items that other people discard or view as trash.
Consider updating your existing pieces with a fresh coat of paint.
My greatest regret is turning down an art scholarship for an academic scholarship. Fast forward 20 years…I don’t use my education degree, but I am still creating art each and every day. SLB: WHEN DID YOU BEGIN SHOPPING AT THRIFT STORES?
MH: My creative resourceful father and I spent just about every Saturday morning of my childhood searching for the next great deal at local garage sales, flea markets, and auctions. It is fair to say that I have ALWAYS been buying used junk with the intention of transforming it into treasure. SLB: HOW DID REPURPOSING FURNITURE AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS BEGIN?
After
MH: Pay close attention to the basic style and scale of your existing pieces before making any large purchases. Painting existing pieces will help to create cohesion between the old and new. Consider updating the hardware on your family pieces to match the feel of your new furniture. SLB: WHAT MAKEOVER ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
MH: The color of our custom kitchen cabinets bothered me for years, but I was so very intimidated with the idea of painting them. After years of excuses and hours of research, I took a leap of faith and painted them bright white. It was such a lovely transformation, and it gave me a renewed sense of confidence in myself and the power of paint! SLB: WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED PIECE OF TRASH TURNED TREASURE?
My motto has always been…It doesn’t take a lot of money to live the most lovely life.
SLB: HOW DID ‘MY THRIFTED PORCH” COME TO BE?
Ask yourself if they can serve or function in a new different way. Adding a simple curtain and extension rod to an old bookcase can create added storage. That antique dresser could serve as a lovely functional entertainment center. Switch out the outdated art in a beautiful frame with a photo to create something meaningful to add interest to your walls.
WWW.BRIDESTL.COM • FALL/WINTER 2021
SLB: I KNOW THAT I HAVE SEEN SO MANY DITCH THEIR EXISTING FAMILY FURNITURE PIECES AND BUY BRAND NEW. WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR MARRYING THE OLD WITH THE NEW?
MH: Weeks after buying our very first condo in a suburb of Chicago, I purchased an antique buffet at a local thrift store for $10. While I was at work, my father who was visiting from out of town decided to sand the piece in my freshly painted and spotless kitchen. Today this piece has a place of honor in our home, and it reminds me of my late father’s adventurous spirit.
MH: Carefully examine all your current pieces with a fresh eye. Determine if your furniture pieces are solid wood, family heirlooms, high quality, or hold an emotional connection.
130
Strive to create a home that speaks to who you are as a couple by choosing to fill it with items that are meaningful and interesting.
MH: My husband and I married incredibly young, and we lived on love for many years as we continued our education. Even though money was scarce at best, I was always determined to create a lovely home. Armed with hand me downs, paint, creativity, and a lot of determination, we did in fact build a cozy beautiful home filled with one-of-a-kind items that told stories and sparked creativity.
SLB: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE NEWLYMARRIED COUPLES WHO ARE POTENTIALLY MERGING HOUSEHOLDS AS FAR AS WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE GETTING RID OF FURNITURE AND HOUSEHOLD DÉCOR?
Michelle’s current front porch outfitted for Independence Day
(furniture and rugs) adding color and personality with unique accessories.
Consider updating your existing pieces with a fresh coat of paint. Choose neural base pieces
MH: While quarantined in the spring of 2020, my husband and I decided that we wanted to declutter our home and prepare to send our two teenagers on a once in a lifetime mission’s trip. I merged the two goals and hosted several virtual garage sales on a facebook group that I created. I photographed the items on the porch and offered porch pick up. One day, I joked that my porch needed its own facebook page, and everyone emphatically agreed. In that moment, “My Thrifted Porch” was born. I now find myself styling porches all over St Louis for homeowners and real estate agents who affectionately refer to me as the “porch lady” or “porch fairy”. ANNIVERSARY Soni & Lakhvir May 29, 2021 LIZ AND HAYLEY PHOTO & FILM
When Soni and Lakhvir got married ten years ago, Soni was newly-diagnosed with a condition that made it difficult for her to dance at her wedding or even stand for long periods of time. Her condition has improved over time and when their 10th wedding anniversary came around, Soni and Lakhvir Gill threw themselves an anniversary party. “My favorite part of the night was when I danced with my husband and then did a solo dance for him and for all of our guests. It was so romantic and fun and we both really enjoyed it. Just being together with our family dancing and enjoying each other’s company was really a delight!”

| STYLED SHOOT III |
Photographed by Lola Mango Photography
The concept of Modern Bridgerton was inspired by the novels written by Julia Quinn. Bridgerton, set in 1813 to 1827, takes place in the Regency Era, which is known for its lavish fashion as well as being a time of grand social affairs. With recent inspiration from the popular Bridgerton series on Netflix, we designed a shoot that embodied the elegance of the past with modern touches. The bride wears a stunning, lacey gown with a dramatic train while the groom and his men were dressed in khaki suits, keeping with the romantic, light, colors of the shoot. The florals were shades of pink with tons of greenery that brought the decor to life. The bouquets took elements from the centerpieces to bring out the colors of the bridesmaid’s dresses. The sweetheart table had elaborate greenery and florals draped along the front, along with timeless china plates to pull the elegance of Bridgeton into the table scape. The cake included a continuation of white and pink flowers with accents of greenery. The vignette created a comfortable area for sitting and talking while also bringing in vintage pieces that complimented the color palette. The blush stemware at the sweetheart table and the stationary brought in a modern touch. The day ended with an intimate shoot with the bride and groom, a real couple that is engaged to be married this June, on the grounds of Noboleis Vineyards. 134

There’s nothing quite like a pop of red, or in this case, red on red on red. Wanting to make a bold statement, this shoot was curated to do anything but blend in. Seeking a modern + sexy vibe, black velvet and gold metallic accents were paired with subtle peach tones to allow the vivid rouge hues to truly pop. Each detail was perfectly crafted to compliment the setting, from the color blocked stationery with modern typography to the signature cocktail and mini-charcuterie plates featuring tasty morsels to compliment the color palette. The striking vision was surely achieved. 144

As much as we would love to NOT mention the dreaded C word that flipped our lives and party planning upside down, there was some good that it brought: More time with your bubble/circle of friends and family; A forced pause, chance to deep breathe as long as it’s 6-feet away from your neighbor please; The chance to work from home in your comfies with your fur babe snuggled right beside you. There is one particular community I would like to shine a light on – the wedding community. There is no stronger love than that of our wedding pros. In those months of cancellations and ever-changing restrictions, we witnessed our industry jump through hoops, bend over backwards, go even more above and beyond to create micro versions of their clients’ happily ever afters or assist them in postponing. Allow me to re-introduce one of St. Louis’ historical and well-loved tourist attractions – the Gateway Riverboats. With the demand for more outdoor locations for weddings in the last year, it seemed only fitting that the Riverboats at the Arch made a debut in this category! A group of creative vendors got together this spring to showcase the possibilities of hosting a wedding on the beloved Tom Sawyer. Alongside the excitement of an open air, open water event that is complete with historic views of the city, a delicious creole inspired menu by Chef Ronnie, is the opportunity to be married by Captain Kevin of the Riverboat, who is an ordained minister! While the restrictions have lifted, allowing indoor celebrations and life feels a bit more back to normal, the Gateway Riverboats are a guaranteed unique experience for your guests full of historic charm and all things St. Louis! We are thrilled to share this hidden treasure that has been a part of our city as much as the Arch.

Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are: 1 All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state. 2 A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its effective date; an Illinois license for sixty days.
