The Copper State has a long history of mining for metals and gemstones. Here are a few places in Arizona to learn more about the history and purchase gems. Arizona Museum of Natural History This museum (www.arizona museumofnaturalhistory.org) has a few non-circulating geological collections available by appointment Monday-Friday. The Museum Store has rocks, minerals and fossils available, including amethyst, gold, copper, silver, gems and more. Rock of Ages For a large collection of gems, rocks and mineral specimens at reasonable prices, visit Rock of Ages (www.rockofagesaz.com) retail store to find what you are looking for. selection of Arizona amethyst, but the rarest sizes and colors.” An Exclusive Trip to the Mine The tour begins at the store, where participants can view the finished products before being driven to a waiting helicopter. A short 12-15 minute flight ends at the entrance to the private mine. The discovery of the mine can be traced back to the 18th century, when Spanish history tells of the discovery of the Four Peaks lode and shipments of the gems to their homeland, where they were incorporated into the crown jewels of five countries. Over the intervening years, the mine saw periods of activity, and changed owners several times. Set high on the mountain in a remote,
rugged area, the location is not easy to get to—in fact, only two miners work on the veins at a time, and they have to hike to the mine, staying there for a week at a time before hiking back out. Today, the mine is owned by Kurt Cavano—who meets visitors at the entrance during these tours, telling his story and answering questions. Visitors can extract the amethysts as the miners do—gently, with just a hand tool, so as not to damage the amethysts. Whatever is mined during this unique and unforgettable experience can be brought home as a keepsake.
