WHY THIS DUBAI MARINA

For many years, Asia Asia has been a staple in Dubai’s nightlife scene offering delectable Pan-Asian bites, lively entertainment, and mesmerising views, over Dubai Marina.

The restaurant comes from the hospitality masterminds Solutions Group, who have brought us Lock, Stock, & Barrel, Ula, Koyo, STK, and more.

Earlier this year, the brand’s flagship Pier 7 hotspot was given a major refurbishment. Reopen to the public since June, guests can expect the same mysterious Geisha-inspired aesthetic but with some cool new features including an open kitchen, extended bar space, and live cooking stations.

As well as a brand-new look and feel, there’s an upgraded menu with exciting new Pan-Asian dishes to try and a tasting menu.

As you enter, the exquisite restaurant immediately transports you to the ancient Spice Route with new furniture and art sourced all the way from Thailand and South-East Asia, vibrant pops of fuchsia, gold touches, and plush velvets bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary.

Soft lighting adds to the ambiance, dramatising the open kitchen and breathtaking marina views.

Known for its lively weekly lineup of events, here are 3 unmissable offers to add to your calendars:

LADIES’ NIGHT

Every Tuesday, this popular Asia Asia ladies’ night gives all girls three drinks from 6pm to 1am, and a three-course set menu with three drinks for Dhs225. The drinks menu includes cocktails, wine, spirits, and beer.

SATURDAY BRUNCH

The famous Saturday brunch is back taking guests on a journey through the Far East to the Middle East with flavours from the ancient Spice Route. With an eclectic set menu of Pan-Asian cuisine, freeflowing drinks, and lively entertainment all enjoyed in the heart of Dubai Marina, there’s no better way to kick off your weekend. The brunch takes place from 2pm to 5pm with packages priced at Dhs275 (soft), Dhs375 (house), and Dhs475 (premium).

SUNDAY EDITION

Every Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, indulge in a selection of small plates and discover the exotic flavours of the ancient Spice Route with a curated eight-course tasting menu for Dhs250 per person, including a bottle of wine between two.

For bookings, contact 04 423 8301 or visit dubai.asia-asia.com.

WE’RE ENTERING A NEW ERA IN DUBAI

I’m calling it now. The mass exodus from the city as mercury rises is no longer. Sure, some people will be heading off on holiday eager to beat the heat, others will use their annual leave to return home for a week or two to embrace some much-needed family time. But the era of see-you-in-sixweeks and packing-everything-minus-the-kitchen-sink for a multi-month trip is finished.

I have to say I’m not mad about it. I rather enjoy summer in Dubai. All of the attractions and experiences that I typically file under ‘only for tourists’ are not only quieter, but they typically offer brilliant discounts for UAE residents. Then there are all the staycation deals, amazing indoor venues we typically forgo for alfresco ones, and a welcome opportunity to enjoy an overall slightly slower pace of life. And the more people who join me, the merrier.

If you’re new to the summer in Dubai club, welcome. If you’re a returning member, it’s great to have you back. To keep you busy through these summer weeks, we’ve put together 26 fabulous ways to beat the heat in Dubai. Our cool box of ways to ensure the rising temperatures don’t get you down features epic indoor activities, wallet-friendly summer deals, inspiration for new hobbies and so much more to keep boredom at bay. Start planning your summer from p14. But we don’t have to say a complete farewell to outdoor daycations. From their lofty perches, Dubai’s impressive collection of rooftop pools offer breezier temperatures and panoramic vistas that allow you to keep pool days on the agenda. Dive in from p26.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Catching up over business lunch at... Drift Beach

I have officially declared the end of alfresco dining this summer, but thanks to a mass of high-impact AC units, you can still enjoy the outdoor feel with indoor cool at Drift Beach. It was here I found myself for a lovely business lunch recently, catching up over Provençalinspired plates like lentil salad, beef carpaccio and roasted salmon.

Being super lastminute and booking my mani-pedi through… ServiceMarket

I’m always scrambling for time. And it’s usually self-care that’s pushed down the priority list. Ahead of a recent vacation, my nails were in need of a little TLC. Though I was running short on time, I knew I had to get it done. So, I decided to get a mani-pedi at home through ServiceMarket. I was even lucky enough to clip a little off the price.

The ease that is… Dubai Airports and Terminal 3

Over the last Eid break, I set off to Saudi Arabia for the first time ever, and whilst I adored Jeddah, I was happy arriving back in Dubai because I knew that I would be out of the airport in under an hour, easily. DXB is so streamlined and organised that I didn’t even have to take my passport out of my backpack. The e-gate scanned my eyes, and the doors opened before I could even unzip the pouch.

@DXB

Binge watching... Derry Girls

I’m late to this one, but after a recommendation from a friend, I’ve finally started watching Derry Girls - and now I’m hooked. I absolutely loved how witty and emotional the show was, and binged it in a day. I laughed, I teared up and now I think it’s time for a rewatch especially for Sister Michael’s deadpan jokes. I adore Siobhán McSweeney.

Enjoying the outstanding sundowner views of... Above Eleven

With tonnes of trendy bars, choosing where to go for sundowners on the Palm can be a tortuous affair. But we can save you the agony of indecision. Try Above Eleven. You’ll find it at the Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah. It has stunning views, and the cocktail collection is scandalously good, as is the Peruvian-Japanese menu.

@aboveelevendubai

Taste testing the world’s third-best burger at… Eleven Green

Gourmet burger eatery, Eleven Green is the brainchild of Sultan and Kinda Chatila, the husbandand-wife duo behind sell-out supper club Tano’s at 8. The menu may be compact, but it’s clear the Eleven Green hype is completely justified. @elevengreen.uae

Getting competitive at… Unwind Specialty Boardgame Cafe

My girlfriends and I are competitive, so Unwind Specialty Boardgame Cafe is the perfect place for us to meet up. The variety of games at the café will blow your mind and the staff is incredibly helpful despite our group of screeching women. The fries and the milkshakes are my strongest menu recommendation. With dippage. Builds character.

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Mona Kattan

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Mona Kattan (@monakattan), entrepreneur, beauty mogul and founder of Kayali Fragrances. She shares some of her favourite spots you need on your radar.

A fragrance that transports me is KAYALI Utopia

Vanilla Coco | 21. I created this juice during lockdown when I was craving a dreamy beach holiday. It instantly transports me to the amazing beaches of the Seychelles and drinking freshly cut coconuts on the sand.

@kayali

Burj Al Arab is definitely my favourite staycation spot. You can often find me poolside there as it is so relaxing and it overlooks the ocean, so you feel like you’re on a beautiful island getaway. I love being in and near the water, it’s my happy place.

@burjalarab

Right now, I’m loving Palm West Beach. It’s so chilled, but there’s always something happening at the same time. It’s perfect to go for a walk with your friends, your pets or just go for a nice bite and watch an incredible sunset. I love it.

@palmwestbeach

My favourite restaurant is hands down, 3Fils. My husband and I go all the time. Their food is divine and I love that it’s super casual and by the water. Make sure you try their Wagyu Burger. You can thank me later!

@3.fils

There’s always something new and fabulous happening everyday in Dubai, from restaurant openings to concerts and museums. My favourite new discovery is the new Atlantis The Royal. The suites are absolutely gorgeous, the restaurants are incredible, and the pool has the most amazing view.

A is for… Aya Universe

Hitting up an immersive entertainment park sure sounds like a neat way to pass a few cool and totally sun-free hours – and if you’re a social media whizz, you already know about Aya Universe. If not, now’s a great time to get acquainted. From the moment you enter this sprawling 40,000 square-foot space in Wafi City Mall, you’re surrounded by high-tech sound, lights and graphics with 12 zones that together comprise the Aya universe, each telling a different story. It’s a visual, kaleidoscopic, fully-airconditioned spectacle.

Aya Universe, Wafi City Mall, Sun to Thur 10am to 10pm, Fri and Sat 10am to midnight, Dhs99 (online), Dhs125 (walk-in), under-threes free. Tel: (0)4 542 0300. @ayauniverse__

C is for… Chinatown Dubai Mall

Chinatowns across the world –from New York to London – have served as hubs of community, love and culture. And when walking these streets, one thing is abundantly clear: the area’s restaurants are a key part of what keeps the heartbeat of Chinatown pulsing. Can Dubai’s very own fully-indoor Chinatown – which opened quietly in Dubai Mall in March – recreate that same magic? It’s certainly giving it a shot with a wave of new restaurants opening up, including Haidilao Hot Pot, Singaporean import Hawker Chan, and Ri Hua Xuan, the restaurant said to have invented the inimitable xiao long bao soup dumpling.

B is for… Beach and pool days

It’s one of the reasons we all love living here – access to amazing beaches and temperature-controlled pools, which are especially welcome in the summer months. For a slightly more five-star experience, why not join the What’s On award-winning Privilee app and gain access to 70+ luxury resorts and their private beaches and pools, plus gyms, classes and discounts on food and drink. There are various pricing plans to choose from but rates start from Dhs529 per month. privilee.ae

THE A TO Z OF SUMMER FUN WHATSON.AE | JULY 2023 15

D is for… Dubai Sports World

Dubai Sports World is one of a few places where you can run without having to brave the summer heat. The centre is home to a 545m indoor track, so you can log those miles in air-conditioned comfort. Elsewhere, you’ll find a range of sporting academies for kids to join, including the Real Madrid football academy, badminton academy and tennis 360. You can also book a range of indoor pitches and courts for everything from padel and pickleball to volleyball and basketball. There is no entrance fee, but you do need to register on Dubai Sports World mobile app and present the QR code at the entrance. You then pay only for the sports facilities you book and use.

Until September 10

Dubai Sports World, Dubai World Trade Centre, daily 8am to midnight. Tel: (800) 3982. @dubaisportsworld

F is for… Footlab

There’s not much professional football to look forward to this summer, but that just means you’ve got more time to flex your own teckers at Footlab, ‘the world’s first indoor football club’. You’ll find the expansive indoor facility, unsurprisingly, at Dubai Sports City and it’s packed to the air conditioned rafters with future footie tech. There are designated zones to help raise your precision, kick power, technique and speed stats; a street soccer area, foot volley court, and a five-a-side pitch (Dhs490 per hour), which offers the opportunity to record and replay your netbusting screamers and cheeky nutmegs. ISD, Dubai Sports City, daily 10am to 10pm, activity packages from Dhs90. Tel: (0)55 997 4878. @footlab_dubai

E is for… Eye Heart Rabbit

Why not spend the summer branching out from the traditional dining circuit and meet other die-hard food fans at a supper club? These days there’s a whole host of options to choose from, but the latest to pique our interest is Eye Heart Rabbit. This wandering neighbourhood pop-up and supper club, with menus created by Jesse Blake of Green Michelin Star restaurant Lowe fame, serves self-proclaimed modern plates of Middle Eastern appearance. We’ll let you know what we think as soon as we’re quick enough to nab a seat.

G is for… Game nights (and golf days)

For those who want to tee off without frying in the midday sun, opportunities abound in Dubai, including Topgolf and Goose Island Tap House. But Bedrock DXB is one of the city’s newest offerings, which also features five state-of-the-art dartboards (complete with digital scoring, and tongue-in-cheek reactions to rubbish attempts). For a bit of both, The Bunker is a private space that’s home to an X-Golf simulator, where players compete against each other on 50 of the world’s top courses, without even breaking a sweat. You’ll also find another dartboard, a 200-inch TV screen and a personal bar inside.

THE A TO Z OF SUMMER FUN 16 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE

J is for… Jameel Arts Centre

There’s a beautiful building that sits at the south edge of Jaddaf Waterfront. Within the building are unassuming light-filled rooms, bordered by white walls and punctuated by little gardens. These are the hard facts that describe Jameel Arts Centre but they fail to do justice to a gallery space that has become a staple of showcasing contemporary arts in the Middle East. Explore its beauty – and a special solo exhibition by Japanese artist Tsuyoshi Hisakado this summer – for free, then make a discerned stop at new Green Michelin Star restaurant Teible for some stunning dishes that celebrates local produce.

Jameel Arts Centre, Jaddaf Waterfront, Mon to Sun 10am to 8pm, Fri noon to 9pm (Tue closed), free. Tel: (0)4 873 9800. @jameelartscentre

H is for… Hanging tough at Mountain Extreme

Looking for a gnarly summer challenge? Master the art of rock climbing inside Mountain Extreme, where thrill seekers can scale the largest climbing wall in Dubai, or traverse the many bouldering walls around the complex in Al Quoz. With 129 bouldering problems, some 127 top rope routes and 14 auto belays that’s more than enough to keep you busy all summer. Bookings are mandatory.

Mountain Extreme, Al Quoz 3, Mon to Fri noon to 9pm, Sat and Sun 9am to 4pm, Dhs125 (drop-in). Tel: (0)4 236 6040. @mountainextremedxb

I is for… Ice baths at Contrast

The stunning new wellness studio on the Palm, by Dubai superstar Layla Kardan, brings together the benefits of hot and cold treatments, including the use of stylish infrared saunas. But the perfect remedy for a sweaty summer is, of course, their signature cold water therapy. You’ll plunge into a tub of freezing temperatures (we’re talking 5 to 7 degrees) to soothe pain, reduce inflammation, and boost mood, energy, and sleep. Don’t worry, the plunge lasts as long or as short as you want, and you can even bring a friend to join in the fun. Step out and your body will be ready to fight the heat for the rest of the day.

Golden Mile 6, Palm Jumeirah, Dhs95 (30-minute ice bath session), Dhs65 (extra person). Tel: (0)56 401 1162. @contrastwellness

K is for… Killer daycations

Just do a quick whatson.ae search and you’ll notice that daycations come out on top time and again –and for good reason. They’re often the best way to spend a day in Dubai no matter the season. But which to highlight here? With breathtaking views of Dubai’s iconic skyline coupled with the best infinity pool in town, Address Beach Resort might just have the splurge offer of the summer. Bag yourselves one of the 11 fully air-conditioned private cabanas, and you’ll have your own bathroom with a shower, plus a lounge, TV and stereo system. The cabana fits four adults and includes access to the exclusive infinity pool and a bottle of white or rosé for Dhs2,777. That’s Dhs695 per person.

Until August 31

Address Beach Resort, Dhs2,777 for four for cabana. Tel: (0)4 879 8866. @addressbeachresort

WHATSON.AE | JULY 2023 17

N is for… Night swimming

Night swimming can be a daunting prospect for some, but the idea of cooler ocean temperatures should be tempting enough to get everyone in the water. Now it’s an even safer experience as Dubai Municipality has designated three beaches as official shorelines for night swimming: in Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim. Each of the 800-metre-long beaches has floodlights that illuminate the sea, allowing residents and tourists to swim safely, with a qualified team of ‘Baywatch Nights’ lifeguards now on duty after dark at each of the designated beaches.

L is for… The Laughter Factory

Dubai’s beloved – and longest running – comedy club The Laughter Factory continues to host its fantastic shows throughout summer. Each tour format features a trio of international comedians who take on indoor stages around the city, where you can sit in darkened comfort while laughing yourself silly. This month’s line-up features Adam Bloom, Michael Fabbri and Red Richardson. July 21 to 22 and 27 to 29

Various locations, including Movenpick JBR, Hyde Hotel and Dukes The Palm, from 8.30pm, Dhs160. Tel: (0)50 878 6728. thelaughterfactory.com

M is for… Museum of the Future

Use the summer to be a tourist in your own town by finally visiting Museum of the Future. One of the most recognisable landmarks in Dubai, Museum of the Future is divided into seven levels with each giving a glimpse into what the world will look like 50 years from now. Be sure to spend some time at the meditation centre on the Al Waha level, where visitors can lie down under a dome projecting light and water ripples. It’s a cathartic and calming experience. Museum of the Future, Sheikh Zayed Road, daily 10am to 9.30pm, Dhs149, underfours free. @museumofthefuture

O is for… Oka Ceramics

REVIEW: HAWKERBOI

Can this spicy Southeast Asian supper club succeed as a restaurant?

In a city where restaurants come and go, Hawkerboi hasn’t just weathered the fad storm, it’s thrived. Beginning life as an anonymous chef-led secret supper club, it secured a dedicated following, built almost entirely on word of mouth.

It was such a success, they were encouraged to open a permanent restaurant, moving into new culinary hub, The Park, JLT, still retaining the trademark lively atmosphere and spicy Southeast Asian cuisine.

JLT has one of the highest concentrations of ‘good eating’ in Dubai, so competition in this part of town is tough. Does the sell-out supper club have what it takes to succeed as a restaurant? Here’s what we thought...

Located on the first floor, the restaurant makes a fiery first impression with red neon lighting, an intriguing open kitchen, a buzzing outdoor terrace, and stunning views over the park area.

At the time of our visit, the restaurant didn’t have an alcohol license. Although that’s no longer the case, the Takir lemonade mocktail with melt-in-themouth tamarind is a great place to start.

The menu is short without leaving you feeling robbed of choice. And it caters to all dietary whims, from vegans to meat lovers.

Without hesitation, order the punchy cucumber salad (Dhs45) smothered in tomato chilli dressing and peanuts. Not for the faint-hearted, the roughlychopped salad is fiery, fresh, and crunchy with just the right burst of acidity.

The truffle and chicken shumai (Dhs62) is so good it practically pops in the mouth bursting with sweetness from the ginger, smokiness from the black vinegar, and a scattering of truffle.

Oh and bear with us as we swoon over the Angus beef skewers (Dhs65). Three come topped with crispy onions and a nutty Thai chilli dressing served from a pipette, which perfectly balances the

flavours and acidic notes.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Good vibes and great food. The passionate cooking at Hawkerboi will warm your soul while the friendly staff, affordable prices, and welcoming atmosphere will ensure a swift return.

And then, of course, is the Peking-style roast duck (Dhs220 for half). Ideal for sharing, duck with pancakes is forever the crowdpleaser and it’s easily one of Hawkerboi’s best signature dishes. The succulent-yetcrispy duck arrives on a large plate with shredded cucumber, spring onion, and sticky hoisin sauce. Fill the smooth steamed pancakes as much as you possibly can for an eyeroll with every bite.

Don’t skip dessert: the BBQ pineapple (Dhs45) is non-negotiable. A warm, zingy pineapple upside-down pudding served with lemongrass, lime, and mango sorbet acts as a palate cleaner to perfectly end the night.

REVIEW: KRASOTA DUBAI

Is it worth Dhs2,000..?

*Spoiler* Yes. Yes it is.

For journalists, the addition or subtraction of one word can alter an entire sentence. For chefs, the sprinkling of a single herb can dramatically change a dish. And for the painter, calm and turquoise oceans are rendered tempests from an over zealous daub of black. Balance, is the obsession of all true artists, but have the culinary crafts people of Krasota got it right?

The nine-course immersive dining experience is designed to bring popular artworks to life whilst also reflecting those

arty elements in the food. Your dinner runs for approximately two hours and will have you walking out of the venue with a newfound appreciation for form, culinary excellence and the human experience.

A bell tolls in the welcome room, signalling the beginning of this elaborately theatrical journey. “Please find your seat, it is allocated by your name projected onto the table.” Once everybody was firmly seated, we were ready – at least we thought we were. Dinner takes place in a circular dimly lit room, with a dark grey, crushed velvet table taking up the majority of the space. And, delighting the child in us, our seats swivel around giving us a full panoramic pirouette of the staging area. Each course that we’re presented with is not only well thought out, it tells a genuine story from start to finish. The staff are dressed for each

course, a sartorial pairing, authentic to the artist’s vision for the piece presented on the screens around us. Dishes are served in unison every time with expert care. Each dish highlights elements of an artist’s life and work, leaving us mesmerised right to the end of every bite.

Without wanting to make it sound like a DVD extra from cuisine scene satire, The Menu, the immersive dining experience at Krasota Dubai is an intricate and meticulously plotted evening that combines all the senses to create a truly visceral moment in time and was a genuine pleasure and a privilege to witness, taste and enjoy.

To experience the deep dive of each individual course that we experienced, feel free to head to our digital review on whatson.ae. No number of words would truly be able to do the experience justice. Krasota Dubai, The Address Downtown Hotel, Dubai. Matinee 3pm, first seating 6pm, and second seating at 9pm. From Dhs1,830 per person.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT Perfection.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

NETSU

Is this a Japanese feast worth maki-ng a trip for?

It’s safe to say that Dubai has fine dining Japanese cuisine well covered. But where Netsu sets itself apart from its contemporaries is with its focus on the traditional straw fire cooking on the Warayaki grill, sitting at the heart of the restaurant’s central glass-walled kitchen. This provides the basis for Netsu’s brunch menu, served over a threehour sitting every Saturday afternoon.

In the cooler months, the pool adjacent terrace is a lovely spot to enjoy brunch alfresco, but we’re happy sitting kitchen-side indoors. In the triple height restaurant, sleek woods and industrial metals are interrupted by warm shades of orange and bright artworks creating an environment that feels modern

and masculine. We open the menu and are instantly impressed by the structure and overall selection.

The first round is a collection of sharing starters, and we begin with deliciously smooth wagyu beef gyozas, dipping each in a sweet ponzu. It’s presented alongside a tuna tataki that’s got an unusually smoky aftertaste that can be accredited to the Warayaki. It’s unexpected, but we like it.

In more familiar territory, chunks of eggplant are served in a sweet miso, while a pair of crunchy salmon tacos are packed with diced raw fish, avocado and high-impact spicy sauce.

As we move to the next course, a platter of sushi and sashimi arrives on a bed of crushed ice, bubbling dry ice spilling over the table for added drama. But our minds are elsewhere as the sushi chef has set up a

roving makeshift station, expertly rolling, stuffing and scorching super-sized maki rolls with spicy tuna and avocado. We’re given one each, then on to the next table he goes, without returning, sadly

From the extensive cocktail array, the Japanese margarita and fragrant melon cosmopolitan, should be applauded.

For main courses, we pick one dish each: I go for the grilled giant tiger prawn. My guest picks the ribeye, both are expertly cooked and arrive with a side of waryaki-grilled potato topped with spring onion and nori. We’re suitably stuffed by this point, so when a bowl of spicy stone rice arrives, packed with veg, we struggle to eat much more than a mouthful or two. It may be better brought out with the rest of the mains, we reflect.

Finally, an impressive dessert platter lands, with fresh fruit, mochi, a gooey chocolate fondant and cinnamon ice cream. It’s light and refreshing, with just a little hint of naughty.

Netsu, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai, 12.30pm to 3.30pm, Saturdays, Dhs450. Tel: (0)4 777 2232, mandarinoriental.com

BAR REVIEW: LING LING

Did Ling Ling just become the hottest new table in town?

Twenty-three floors high in one of the most talked about hotels of the year, Atlantis The Royal’s Asian restaurant Ling Ling opened to great fanfare in February, with the likes of Emily in Paris’ Ashley Park, Trey Songz, Fat Joe, and Jonathan Cheban all attending the grand opening soirée.

A concept by the Hakkasan Group, Ling Ling started out as an exclusive lounge within the famous Cantonese restaurant but has made a promising first impression on the city as a stand-alone restaurant for its wow-worthy views, food, and vibes.

We’re here for a Friday evening session, the vibe is wonderfully fun and varied with large groups and couples either drinking, dining, or dancing. Spanning two floors, the chic dining space features profoundly nightclub-esque lighting, double-height windows, a huge bar for sipping eyebrow-raising concoctions, and an outdoor terrace with panoramic views of the glittering Dubai skyline.

It quickly became apparent that this is not where you go to escape the hustle and

bustle of the city but, rather, where you go if you want to be right in the centre of it. The drinks menu is elaborate but it’s the innovative cocktails that are hard to ignore. We order the smoking tequilabased Chaweng (Dhs115) cocktail, made with spicy sriracha for a pleasant punch of heat, before looking down at the izakayainspired menu.

The sharing-style menu blends a mix of Asian cuisines and is full of words like “wagyu”, “truffle XO”, “24k gold”, and “caviar”. If you’re on the search for pure bred authenticity, then maybe Ling Ling is not for you - but the food is delicious in its own right. Consider pairing the smoking cocktail with the tea-smoked duck kuih pie tee (Dhs95). Three crispy pastry cups come stuffed with smoked duck, hoisin egg, and sweetcorn – an abundance of textures that will have you thinking about them for days to come. The cha ca seabass (Dhs180),

soft, tender, and sweetened by a sticky turmeric marinade, is another stand-out dish. The 24k gold makizushi (Dhs550) feels indulgent and deeply satisfying. Nine pieces of gold-wrapped, caviar-topped, lobster-stuffed, and a5 wagyu-rolled sushi are a show-stopper dish.

For our main course, we were in the mood for seafood so opted for the signature lobster pad Thai (Dhs580), and at once, Bangkok has us – with juicy meat, bean sprouts, and deliciously slippery noodles.

Vibe still high, we ended the evening with another cocktail, the unashamedly smart and sophisticated Shilin Nights (Dhs95), which was a fruity and refreshing tipple made with vodka, watermelon, shiso, calamansi, and a fiery kick of ginger.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

While it might be on the more expensive side, the cocktails, food, views and vibe more than justify the price.

MYTHOS URBAN EATERY

The latest chapter of a popular Greek saga

Rather appropriately for its name, the original JLT location of Mythos Kouzina & Grill (which opened in 2015) enjoys something of a mythic reputation in Dubai. Built on Parthenon pillars of authentic Ionian cuisine, intuitively assembled sharing options, and doing all of that with – the unlikely plot twist in the story –deliciously fair pricing.

Precisely because of this cachet, an empire always seemed likely, but we had to wait until 2023 before one dropped. You’ll find the latest edition, Mythos Urban Eatery on The Square – an alfresco courtyard tucked to one side of City Walk.

Entry is made through the garden area, and from there it is immediately clear that the design muses have been engaged in Heraclean level labours. We stroll under timber beams, serpentine vines, past earth-tinted pots and through the perfumes of a balmy European night. Inside, the modern taverna style of Mythos: Chapter One has been echoed, expanded, and evolved. It’s minimalistic, organic, and impressively starved of free tables for an idle Tuesday night.

The core tenements of Mythos philosophy are clearly visible on the menu. Everything, including the mains, lends itself to sharing. Our own odyssey begins with dips – creamy dollops of taramasalata (Dhs35) and tzatziki (Dhs30) served with charcoal fired pita (Dhs8). It’s the Medusa effect. So charmed are we by these expertly spun elements of Athenian tapas, we have to talk ourselves down from ordering more bread and imperiling onward progress.

Instead we consult the oracle, our server, on what to order next. He stoically counsels on behalf of a vintage from their Greek wine collection, alongside plates of padron peppers (Dhs38), keftedakia (lamb and beef meatballs, Dhs52), crispy baby marrow (Dhs28), mountain salad (Dhs41), grilled calamari (Dhs52), and grilled octopus (Dhs95).

An Olympic pantheon of plates with epicurean joy to be unearthed in each one. The meatballs are a Minoan labyrinth of herby flavour; the calamari – grilled and unbreaded, an unfettered masterpiece –prepared with Chronos-tier attention to timing. Though retired to a supporting role, the padron peppers with their vinegar and garlic drizzle make for a fiery side quest.

To explore the mythology further we take plates of chicken souvlaki (Dhs71), lamb chops (Dhs155), and octopus stifado (Dhs170).

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

If there’s a moral to this Mythos it’s that heroic food can be unpretentious, it should be shared unselfishly and forever warmly remembered.

We find that octopus provides a powerful algebraic equation for comparing restaurants on a relative scale, it’s incredibly easy to over or undercook. Here at Mythos, the furling tendrils are buttery and tender, it’s a Kraken most expertly tamed. The lamb chops are a Trojan horse of masterfully marinated meat; and the chicken skewers come dusted with Mediterranean herbs, impossibly crispy fries and a ferocious nostalgic jab of “take me back to Mykonos”. The idea of tackling dessert feels like a Sisyphean (the man sentenced to eternal uphill boulder pushing) task. And must remain a pleasure deferred for our next voyage. Because as the oracle predicted, we will of course be back. The Square, City Walk. Sun to Thu, 12.30pm to midnight. Fri and Sat, 12.30pm to 1am. Tel:(0)4 225 3313. mythosdubai.com

BIG SCREENS AND BIG STREAMS

Whether

you’re going hard at the box office or home to watch flicks and chill, there is some massive entertainment headed your way in July

This month, three box office monsters roll into town within a week of each other, squaring off over precious IMAX inch territory. But the battle for your attention takes on a home front too with some massive streaming debuts. Here are six big screen and big stream blockbusters dropping in July.

BIG SCREENS

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Expected: July 13

If you’re an action movie fan, they don’t come much bigger or as frequently – as the films of the Mission Impossible franchise. And like the man who plays core protagonist Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), they only seem to be getting

better with age. Which is in no small part thanks to the emergence of Christopher McQuarrie as saga director. The sixth outing, Fallout was easily the best of the bunch for us, but gave us little clue what sort of direction, doublecrossing and Q-style gadgetry we could expect from the next two entries Dead Reckoning, Parts One and Two – which were shot back-to-back. Your mission dear reader, if you choose to accept it, is to wait patiently until it arrives in box offices on July 13.

Oppenheimer

Expected: July 20

This film has all the right periodic elements for a truly explosive release. Directed by Christopher Nolan (whose lowest rated, of nine, full length feature films currently sits at 7.2 on IMDB), starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role and a based-on-a-realstoryline that follows the ethically-fraught series of events behind the Manhattan Project, the race to master nuclear fission and “become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. After shaking the atomic genie out of the bottle, Oppenheimer famously spent the rest of his days lobbying against its use, and we couldn’t think of a better pairing (Nolan and Murphy) to smash that sort of internal conflict nucleus apart. Literally zero chance this bombs at the box office.

CULTURE // MOVIES AT HOME AND AWAY
46 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Barbie

Expected: July 20

Even after watching the trailer, we’re not entirely sure what sort of energy this big screen live-action Barbie movie is going to give. There are reasons to be hopeful, though. It has Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) directing and a cast that includes Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and support from Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and Helen Mirren. Not much is known about the plotline, but in the grand What’s On movie round up tradition we’ve got some predictions. We’re guessing that it’s going to be hyperself aware and full of running gags in the vein of frantic outfit changes, androgynous anatomy and ubiquity of the colour pink.

BIG STREAMS

Last Night in Soho

Expected: July 7, Netflix

This film snuck out whilst we were at the precarious peak of pandemic PCRing, so it never really got the audience figures it deserved. It comes from the mind of Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy collaborator Edgar Wright, stars Anya Taylor-Joy and tells the story of a young woman who, through her dreams, is able to travel back in time to London in the swinging sixties. It’s in one of these fits of retro reverie, where central protagonist Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) becomes enamoured with beautiful club singer, Sandie (Taylor-Joy). Embroiled in the seedy under belly of Soho’s nightlife, it’s not long before Sandie disappears. Ellie uses what she’s learned from the past, to investigate the crime during the present, in hopes of unravelling a 60-year-old mystery.

Bluey

Expected: July 12, Disney+ If you’re a parent it is impossible, like, utterly **Princess Bride voice** inconceivable that you are unaware of the animated kid’s show, featuring the eponymous Australian Blue Heeler, Bluey. “You have to watch it” someone said to us at a barbecue a few months ago “it’s genuinely hilarious”. After that, more and more parents began turning in their unsolicited oral reviews, usually Aussies (they were the early adopters being Bluey Kabayans) and were never less than emphatic. It got to a point where not watching it just became an untenable position. We were missing out on so many in-jokes and impassioned discussions about just how much of an inferior father Bluey and Bingo’s dad makes you feel. Dear reader, this is up there with StoryBots and in the running for most enjoyable (for parents) kid’s show ever created. 5/5. And this July, we’re getting 10 fresh new episodes. Biscuits.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Expected: July 8, OSN+

Films from the playwright, screenwriter, producer, and director, Martin McDonagh don’t come around that often (unsurprising given the length of his job title), but when they do, they usually end up being regarded as cult classics. He’s the man behind In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and The Banshees of Inisherin – delicious, award-winning, black comedies and masterclasses in farce and social parody. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri isn’t new, it first came out in 2017 but it’s rereleasing on OSN this July and it absolutely needs to be on your watch list. It’s the story of a woman, pushed to breaking point by the inactivity of the sheriff’s office investigating the murder of her daughter. It’s fraught with racial tension and the core cast is legend tier.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Afshan Quraishi

48 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

In a creative world currently facing a surge of AI art and NFT’s, it’s always refreshing to see beautiful works in traditional styles. Afshan Quraishi, an artist living in the UAE, is a purist whose signature style stands out for its delicate traditionalism.

Her love of art began at an early age, where she was mentored on the fundamentals by Azeez Azmi, a master of fine arts in her home town, Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Quraishi hit the pause button for a couple of years on her creative license, but re-ignited her passion and picked up the brush to overcome empty nest syndrome, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Quraishi works in multi-media, but her preferred medium is oil on canvas, which allows her to showcase details and colours in her work. She also uses acrylics, pastels, water colours, charcoal and graded pencils when sketching. You may have spotted her works around the UAE at hotels, galleries and at a number of art festivals across the country, including Art Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah Art Festival. She has even made a name for herself abroad, exhibiting at the Florence Art Festival and Mauritius Art Festival. She is the recipient of a number of awards including, the Leonardo Da Vinci Artist Award (2018), Arab Cultural Art Award and more. Another accolade? She also holds a golden visa in the creative field and she tells What’s On that she is, “very grateful to the UAE government for the great honour.”

Her pieces also adorn the walls of royal homes around the UAE. This includes a portrait of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – a painting Quraishi painted in 2018 to celebrate the Year of Zayed. “I feel so honoured that they found my art worthy enough to be a part of their art collection,” she says.

Her other eye-catching artworks showcase plenty of foliage and flowers, including her Flower Girl series. Quraishi holds a

Masters in Botanical Sciences, and her love for nature began during field trips where she had to observe the natural world. “The flowers, the leaves have such symbolic expressions in art form”, she explains.

With a passion for ensuring that each artwork comes with a rich narrative, she compares her art to a visual autobiography. “I strongly feel that my paintings are about the pleasure of seeing myself exploring and embracing the beauty that surrounds me,” Quraishi smiles.

Her favourite work is called ‘Umm’ or ‘Mom’ and depicts the range of emotions we as humans experienced in the pandemicthose of hope, despair, fear, acceptance and triumph.

Each one of the pieces, Quraishi tells us, is unique. She is influenced by her personal experiences and works by other artists, including renowned Indian artists Raja Ravi Verma and Sayed Haider Raza, whose work she says are the “best examples of European academic art with Indian sensibility.” In the UAE, she is also impressed by Emirati artists Fatma Lootah, Najat Makki and Abdul Qader Al Rais, whose work represents people and the culture of the UAE in their own unique styles.

When asked about her thoughts on the surge of AI art, she says, “artists need to be aware of the new trends and amalgamate it with the traditional ones.” She adds that, “pure art form and the generation of digital art can both grow and co-exist at the same time.”

In her spare time, Quraishi loves to read and regularly visits Alserkal Avenue. She is currently working on her next solo exhibition slated for December this year.

Want to keep up with the artist? Check out her social media feeds on @afshanquraishi or view her artworks on the afshanartgallery.com website

An introduction to aesthetics

So you want to dip your toe into tweaks? Here’s where to start…

something easy and subtle. Take your time to think about it, do not let yourself be rushed into a treatment.”

Nova Clinic offers a range of treatments from non-surgical facials, IV drips and micro needling, to fillers, injectables and then more extreme cosmetic surgeries. “When it comes to fillers, injectables and especially surgery, you should be very cautious if someone tells you a treatment is suitable for everyone,” Dr Timm tells us when we ask about aesthetic treatments that can be universal. “Everybody is unique and each person – and area of their body – has unique needs,” he adds.

From futuristic facials, to fillers, peels and lifts, the ever-changing face of the aesthetics world can be hard to keep up with. Ranging from subtle tweaks to shape-shifting body treatments, aesthetics are a popular route to take for those wishing to address a certain hang-up without extending to drastic action. So with an open mind and cautious curiosity, we pay a visit to Nova Clinic. One of Dubai’s premier spots for all things aesthetics, the brand has long been established in Jumeirah. But recently, they opened a swish new branch in Nakheel Mall, which is where we come to find out more. The smart clinic has the feel of a sophisticated salon rather than a cold clinic, with warm lighting, creamy hues and a delicate scent that puts us at ease as we enter. A waiting area home to magazines and flavoured water provides a relaxing spot to complete a consultation form, before we’re called in for our appointment. Our consultation is with Dr Timm Wolter, one of Nova Clinic’s resident aesthetic specialists.

“Ask all the questions you want to,” says Dr Timm, when we probe him on what advice he would give to a new patient.

“If you are not sure, make a follow-up appointment before doing anything.” Each client is in the driving seat here. Whether you know exactly what you want to enhance a particular area, or you have a goal in mind but don’t know how to get there, Dr Timm is on-hand to provide recommendations and ensure clients have all the insights and information needed to make an educated decision on what’s best. “Ask yourself what bothers you most or all the time you look at yourself,” Dr Timm explains. “Start with

For us, this means focusing on smoothing out some fine lines around the eyes, and lifting the area around the eye to give more definition. We’re recommended to begin with of the most common aesthetic treatments, botox. This starts with a cool numbing cream, and then is swiftly followed by 10 quick, sharp injections around the eye and forehead. It’s not pain free, but the discomfort doesn’t last long. Although we see some results immediately, it’s a week later when we really notice the brighter, more awake look – and others notice it too. With results lasting around six months, we’re confident we’ll be returning.

Netflix and chilled

Watch TV inside a swanky infrared sauna and then brave a cold dip at chic new studio Contrast

Ice baths are having a moment in the world of wellness, and while the idea sounds mildly unpleasant, the concept itself is thought to offer a plethora of benefits, particularly for committed exercise enthusiasts.

The activity is hardly new of course: ice baths – or cold-water therapy – has been favoured by pro athletes for years, and claims about the purported benefits date back centuries. The theory is that exposure to cold helps to combat microtrauma in the muscle fibres and soreness caused by intense or repetitive exercise. However, bathing in an icy cold tub has become quite the trend, touted for its transformative healing properties, such as mental clarity and boosted immunity.

One place that’s zoning in on the trend is new Palm studio Contrast, which has quickly built a loyal clientele for its private infrared saunas, contrast therapy and cold-water baths, which sit at a chilly fiveto-seven degrees. The brainchild of creative husband-and-wife duo Layla Kardan and Hamdan Al Khafaji, founders of Dubai’s premier cabaret club Papillon, Contrast is

an aesthetically stunning space of warm neutral tones and curved arches. It has five large private infrared sauna rooms, an ice bath room, and a contrast therapy room, which comprises a cold-water tub and a traditional sauna complete with salt wall. Put it this way – it’s about as far removed from your bog-standard mega gym sauna as you could get.

With the Contrast Therapy room occupied, we signed up for a 45-minute infrared sauna followed by an ice bath treatment. The sauna suite is state-of-theart, equipped with a 32inch smart TV, which meant (to our delight) that we could watch Selling Sunset on Netflix while getting our sweat on. Unlike traditional saunas, which raise the air temperature to very high levels, infrared saunas heat the body directly, with waves penetrating the skin, helping activate the body’s sweat glands and eliminate toxins.

Able to withstand just 35 minutes – and dripping in sweat – we make a beeline for the shower, dry off and head across the studio for the cold plunge. Another smart TV shows Netflix, this time screening a man sitting in the snow leading a guided meditation. We climb the steps up to the top of the big black cylindrical tub, take in a couple of deep breaths and make the plunge. Since our body temperature is warmer than normal, the initial feeling of cold is refreshing, but that swiftly changes as our bodies react to the freezing temperatures. A few long, deep breaths and we’re past the worst of it, and at 45 seconds, our bodies relax as we focus on our breath.

As we clamber out of the tub – after seven minutes or so – that invigorating feeling rushes over us – a feeling not too dissimilar to completing a hardcore workout. Blood rushes through our bodies, our minds feel sharper, our eyes alert and wide – and we feel ready to tackle the day. This is chic wellness at its best.

ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM,

Maldives

Showing you a side to this island archipelago that isn’t seen much atoll

Snap shots and tales of visitors who have ventured to the white sands and crystal-clear waters of the Maldives are enough to get anyone dreaming of booking a flight to this dazzling atoll network nation. As an archipelago of 1,190 coral islands in the Indian Ocean, you certainly won’t be lacking options. The fun begins with finding the right one for you. Research is key, and if you fancy following a path less often travelled, here are three less famous islands, each with their own unique charm and fully deserving of your attention.

60 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // MALDIVES

MALÉ, MALDIVES

The capital of the Maldives located in the Kaafu Atoll is a spot you must visit, even if it is just for a day. Home to some prominent icons and landmarks, the city is packed with Maldivian culture and history. Here’s our top things to do.

Sultan Park

If you’ve thoroughly enjoyed a sumptuous feast of Creole cuisine for lunch and want to walk off the calories, head to Sultan Park. Built on the demolished grounds of the Royal Palace, you’ll be treated to a gorgeous green oasis. You’ll find it next to the Grand Friday Mosque.

Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam

Next up, the Grand Friday Mosque – one of the biggest houses of worship in the whole of the Maldives. The impressive exteriors are made from grand white marble topped with a striking gold dome, while the inside showcases intricate ancient woodwork. Non-Muslims can enter the mosque relatively freely during its opening hours (arms and knees need to be covered), but access during prayer time is restricted.

Malé Fish Market

A visit to a fish market isn’t something you’d see on most Maldivian itineraries, but remember, fishing is the original lifeblood of this island nation and around 30 per cent of the population work in the fishing industry. Pay a quick visit and watch the catches of the day being hauled in and cleaned. It’s the closest you’ll get to experiencing the local life.

CROSSROADS MALDIVES

Home to spacious rooms,

over-water

studios and suites, each offers pristine views of the turquoise waters, the resorts are perfect for families, couples and even single travelers.

Away from your room, you’ll find a number of restaurants serving up various delicious dishes, spots to shop and spas. Want to travel between the islands? It’s walkable, but there are also buggies to shuttle you back and forth – perfect for when the little one’s feet are tired after a day of exploring.

If you just want to soak in the serenity, pick a sun lounger by the beach where you can enjoy sip on a drink, read a book or maybe take a nap under the sun.

Rates from Dhs1,200 per night. crossroadsmaldives.com

Located about a 20-minute speed boat ride away from Malé is the Maldives’ only multi-island destination. It is home to two stunning family-friendly resorts – SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton and the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, each occupying its own island but connected by a bridge over clear turquoise waters. stunning villas,

FUVAHMULAH

For the more experienced swimmers and divers, (or if you are keen to learn how to take a plunge), Fuvahmulah should be on the top of your Maldives island bucket list. Located on the Gnaviyani Atoll, you will need to hop on a flight and head to the southern region of Maldives. Your flight will take you passed the equator, and to celebrate the occasion, you will receive a certificate complete with your name and flight details. It’s an occasion that has been celebrated for centuries by sailors and definitely a memory for the showcase. While you’re there, here are few extra must-dos…

Koda Kilhi

Get down and dirty with a mud bath in the wetland areas. Since the island is of volcanic origin, the mud is rich in minerals and is a relaxing and fun experience. To get to the natural mud bath requires a bit of trekking, but more importantly you need to watch where you step. We suggest going with a tour guide who will be able to take you to and from the mud bath safely.

Thoondu Beach

After your fun mud escapade, you can clean up in the shallow waters at Thoondu Beach. Located on the north of the island, the beach is famous with the locals and tourists for one unique feature: the white sand isn’t really sand at all, rather it is made of up coral pebbles. Sadly though, it is not recommended that you swim here as the currents are quite strong, but surfers can enjoy showing off their skills here in July and August.

Extreme Dive Fuvahmulah

At the five-star PADI dive centrecertified Extreme Dive Fuvahmulah, you can learn from the best with Extreme’s experienced and professional team. It features a 4.5 metre-deep swimming pool where you will practice breathing techniques, equalising, and all the important hand signals. The diving centre is stocked with all the necessary equipment for you to rent, so show up and give it a go.

Once the team thinks you’re ready it’s time to enjoy a tiger shark dive.

Tiger Shark Dive

The Extreme Dive Fuvahmulah team offers a number of dives each day (suitable weather conditions permitting). During your experience you are likely to come face-to-toothy-face with several different shark species along with other fascinating sea creatures. But you won’t be alone, as every dive is accompanied by the experienced diving centre team. Non-swimmers are welcome to stay on the boat and enjoy spotting plenty of marine life from above.

GETTING THERE

Emirates offers four daily flights from Dubai to Malé, Maldives. Prices over the summer start from Dhs2,940. emirates.com

Caesars Palace Dubai

The What’s On Awardwinning staycation packs a punch when it comes to dining, leisure and relaxation.

LOCATION

The only hotel on Bluewaters Island, Caesars Palace is a luxurious resort that unfurls along a 1.7km stretch of beach. Divided between two towers – Julius and Palace – in the middle you’ll find Cove Beach, a hedonistic beach club that regularly draws a glamorous crowd.

LOOK AND FEEL

Distinctly contemporary, with regal touches everywhere you look, Caesars Palace is inspired by the Roman Empire, and it wants to ensure guests are treated like royalty too. Intricate paintings in the lobby, ornate statues in the immaculately maintained grounds and geometric print carpets give a modern, palatial touch to an otherwise minimalistic aesthetic.

ROOMS

We check-in to a sumptuously spacious sea view suite in the Palace building, where the regal aesthetic remains ever-present, yet impressively understated. Shades of smart slate grey and expensive-looking light woods are enhanced with amenities that include branded beach bags, foothugging slippers and a walk-in wardrobe. A pillow menu, Acqua di Parma bathroom

amenities, and dining area where locally inspired treats are left at turndown are thoughtful features that instantly impress.

FACILITIES

This resort is a playground for adults and children alike. No less than five swimming pools include an offering exclusive for families, which we swerve in favour of afternoons at Amalfi-inspired Venus and the playful Neptune pool. Venus, part-restaurant, and part-beach club is a colourful iteration of the best bits of the Italian seaside, with a pleasant menu of crowd-pleasing Italian dishes. A relaxed Saturday brunch allows guests to experience both, with a set menu in the restaurant followed by pool access. Neptune, with its monochrome striped loungers, bubblegum pink towels and exceptional service is the perfect place for a pool day. While the choice of music may be a little confusing, the menu of grazing bites that includes sushi, sandwiches, pizzas and an extensive cocktail list is the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon of tan-topping.

FOOD AND DRINK

There’s a dozen restaurants split across the main hotel and Julius tower, and guests are encouraged to create their own gastronomic adventure by dining across both. An allencompassing breakfast buffet at Bacchanal is a suitably overthe-top affair for the Vegas-born brand, where breakfast classics sit comfortably alongside a buffet of sushi, pizza and even a chocolate fountain.

A la carte experiences at Caesars Palace come with some starry credentials behind them, such as Hell’s Kitchen, a British restaurant inspired by the hit Gordon Ramsay TV show. Decked out in hues of bright red and blue, the menu is a collection of British classics that include the signature beef Wellington, alongside upscale additions like delicate seared scallops to start (Dhs150) and a sizzling chateaubriand for two (Dhs650) that melts effortlessly in the mouth. Another celebrity chef led eatery you won’t want to miss is the dimly lit and smartly decorated Chinese restaurant Demon Duck, brainchild of larger-than-life chef Alvin Leung. The star dish here? Unsurprisingly, the slow-roasted, 14-day aged demon duck (Dhs690), carved tableside for added wow-factor.

ROOM RATES

A one-night stay for two in a Deluxe Resort View King Room starts from Dhs950 for room-only or Dhs1,050 inclusive of breakfast.
