In preparation for MOViE MOViE’s 10th Anniversary Special, my dear colleague Leah – on our team for less than a year, opened a decade of old archives in search of photos that documented our ten years. After going through over 10,000 photos, she told me it was like watching me grow, and the truth might not be far off.

I joined Edko Films in November 2011, brought on to organize an international film channel featuring award-winning films as the role of Head of Channel; during those nascent times, there was only a film list from the internal library – the existence of the channel was barebones, and everything had to be conceived and imagined from scratch. Looking back, there were so many tasks to get the channel up to operation; even something like the individual classified information clips were over 100 in number. To say that this was a daunting task in retrospect is an understatement.

I remember so well the brain-storming meeting that conceived the channel’s name – it’s still so fresh in our minds. We wanted to bring the Broadway Cinematheque experience to people’s homes. We went through many iterations, each one coming up short. Calling it “IFC (International Film Channel)” shared the name of an iconic building, and calling it “Film Master Channel” was too esoteric for ordinary audiences. After racking our brains, my boss Mr. Kong suggested an easy-to-remember name: “MOViE MOViE,” and the rest is history. As the fundamentals were finalized, I had to find a designer for the logo, create publicity, and then decided to launch the MMM magazine where I became a writer and editor.

The MM team initially consisted of Cherie Fan (Operations and Programming) and I, and we were supported by Audrey Lee – my supervisor at the time, and Gary Mak, Director of the Broadway Cinematheque. At the same time, Tessa Lau, head of the theatre department during this period (and now my current boss) and Mr. Kong participated in many of the early decision making meetings. We are still so grateful for all the indelible advice they gave us during these early days. With so much encouragement from my peers, I then started looking for team members one by one for my fledging team. The designer for both the MOViE MOViE logo and accompanying magazine, Renatus Wu – I remember there were only 2 people in his company back then, was introduced

by Amanda Tam, the manager of the Kubrick Bookstore. The channel’s ID was made by the artist b.wing and Richard Yu’s team – you might recognize their work with the Broadway Cinema’s prescreen etiquette short. Sun Law, who shared the office with Renatus, built our website. And I have such fond memories of a fresh University of Hong Kong graduate, Lo Ying Yeung, who went from a tenured intern at the Broadway Cinematheque to taking charge of our marketing. So to me, it felt like the movie SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION (1993). Everyone mentioned here was so integral to the foundation of our channel, and half a year after, on May 31st, the MOViE MOViE channel officially piloted on Now TV.

I would especially like to thank my go-to person Cherie Fan; creative director Judy Ho; my growth manager Wylie So; and the young teammates Leah, Janice, Down, Hazel, Michael, colleagues and interns past and present. I am grateful to every team member.

In ten years hence, I can really say that it feels like such a dream. MOViE MOViE now has two cinemas in Hong Kong, respectively at Cityplaza and Pacific Place, launched an online streaming service, organized countless film festivals and community screenings, and has collaborated with a gamut of different agencies and brands. And through all this – everything I’ve been through, and the people I’ve met along the way and worked with, they are always in heart. Serendipity is often the rarest of rare, so I truly cherish everything with great appreciation. It is humbling, truly. Now, it’s the 10th Anniversary – certainly a time to celebrate! In keeping in theme of building something the foundations, we are honored that this year’s flagship film festival, Life is Art is centered around a collaboration with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects. Furthermore, for the first time, we’ve invited Micah, the mastermind of The Kongner, to curate “MOVIE is Dead. Long Live Movie” for us, a film festival in hopes to reinvigorate the audience with all things cinema.

For 10 years, MOViE MOViE has used “See the World” as its slogan. Nothing has changed, and it still maintains its original intention to travel far and see more. Let‘s MOViE MOViE, my friends!

JOYCELYN 為預備今期 MOViE MOViE 的十週年特輯,加入團隊未夠 1 年 的同事 Leah 為我們翻開 10 年間的舊檔,尋找合適的照片。 看過逾萬張照片後,Leah 對我說感覺好像看著我成長,事實 或許也離得不遠。 在 2011 年 11 月,我加入了安樂影片籌辦一條主打得獎電影的 國際電影頻道,那時我的同事為我起了一個稱號——「台長」。 剛開始的時候,只有一個片庫的片單,可以說是由零開始構 思和想像;團隊成員也是逐一物色,還有要準備頻道運作等 一大堆項目,單是播放前不同字眼的分類資訊片段已達百多 條。構思頻道名稱那個腦震盪會議仍歷歷在目,我們本意是 將百老匯電影頻道帶到普羅大眾家中,將藝術電影拉近生活。 但叫「百老匯電影中心頻道」有點敿口,叫「IFC (International Film Channel)」又撞名,叫「Film Master Channel」恐怕會 嚇走一般觀眾⋯⋯苦思良久,江老闆提議不如叫簡單易記的 「MOViE MOViE」,the rest is history。在基礎事情敲定之後, 又要找設計師設計 logo 和宣傳(然後又決定推出這本 MMM 雜誌,又兼當撰文與編輯)。 MOViE MOViE 團隊最初只有我和行動組組長(負責 operation 跟 programming)的 Cherie Fan。猶幸當年的上司李玉蘭和 百老匯電影中心總監麥聖希均給予很多支持和意見,而江老 闆和當年戲院部負責人劉少文(現在是我的上司)也參與了很 多早期決定性的會議。在今天的回憶裡,為 MOViE MOViE 設 計 logo 和 MMM 雜誌開台功臣的胡卓斌(當年他公司也只有 2 人)是 Kubrick 書店店長 Amanda 介紹的,製作頻道 ID 是 製作百老匯院線禮儀影片的 b.wing 和 Richard Yu 團隊,做網 頁是當時和胡卓斌共用辦公室的 Sun Law,負責 marketing 是剛從港大畢業在百老匯電影中心當了實習生很久的 Yeung Lo Ying⋯⋯在不同人士引薦和介紹下,MOViE MOViE 頻道在 我加入半年後的 5 月 31 日於 Now TV 正式試播。 我要特別感謝我的 go-to person Cherie Fan;創意總監 Judy Ho;品牌經理 Wylie So;還有 Leah Janice Down Hazel 和 Michael,以及多年來的同事和實習生。這 10 年恍如發了 一場夢般,因為 MOViE MOViE 在香港多了兩間分別在太古城 中心和太古廣場的戲院,推出了 OTT 網上串流服務,辦了很 多不同主題的電影節和社區放映,以及跟不同機構和品牌跨 界合作。所經歷的一切、認識和合作的人我都銘記於心。這 些機會可以不是我的,因此格外珍惜,分外肉緊。 適逢 10 週年,我們也要趁慶祝有時「攪大 D」。除了這本 MMM 雜誌的版面大了,我們十分榮幸今年的旗艦電影節 Life is Art 光影藝術祭能與香港建築師學會攜手策劃;此外我們亦 首次邀請 MOViE MOViE 以外的人——由 The Kongner 主腦米 迦策劃以「MOVIE is dead. Ltd LEAH 音樂和電影本來就形影不離。配樂一起,電影畫面隨 即油然而生。今期 MMM 小弟有幸和坂本龍一的好友 黃志淙博士進行訪問。我除了更認識坂本龍一的創作 之外,更有機會一起討論電影和音樂之間的關係。膾 炙人口的 Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence 不但是坂本 龍一成名之作,更是電影《戰場上的快樂聖誕》不可 或缺靈魂。樂曲一起,整個畫面就浮現了。好的配 樂能夠昇華電影的情緒,而好的場面調度(Mise-enscène)則能夠把音樂的精髓勾劃出來。大家下次看電 影時,不妨留意一下配樂和電影之間的配合,讓你的 電影體驗更上一層樓。 SIMON 彳亍於秋風裏,頭頂是慘白的天空,我的心變作枯 枝敗葉,肆意在體內沙沙作響。一年又快要終結, 萬物走向衰謝——人不由得思忖恆久的可能。過去 人極力把脆弱、暴力、浪漫、悲苦、欣悅的瞬間凝 固成一片片薄如紙的膠片,渴盼築起自己的永恆, 但絕大部分卻都終敵不過一場烈火、一些日光,以 及記憶的消亡。如今影像唾手可得,我們是否就離 彼此更近、離遺忘更遠了?避開蕭瑟的風,步入影 院,仰首看大銀幕——仍有人在溫柔地說故事;環 視四周,漆黑中仍有人在不倦地聽故事⋯⋯跼蹐不安 的心竟得到一絲平和。 JENNY 最近看了杜 Sir 做嘉賓的《導演.門》,他說:「人 一有念頭,事情就會出現。」相信 MOViE MOViE 和 MOViE MOViE 阿媽——百老匯電影中心都是這樣誕 生的。 MOViE MOViE 十歲了,我也在 MOViE MOViE 工作了 近八年。引用《巴黎夜旅人間》裡的一句對白:「我一 開始想像的生活並不是這樣的,但我們還是盡力去熱 愛它。」 新念頭仍在萌芽中,但學杜 Sir 話齋:「放開一點會 更精彩,藝術是這樣,你要先全情奉獻。」還想趁這 機會多謝這些電影的陪伴:《一一》、《瀑布》、《扑頭 前失魂後》,還有仍在上映中的《巴黎夜旅人間》。 JUDY WYLIE 雖然加入 MOViE MOViE 團隊只有 2 年多,但我已經 深深體會到團隊中人,無論是資深同事、新人或前 人,原來每位都是深藏不露、臥虎藏龍的高人。大家 在工作崗位上各有擅長,不過從相處和工作中,我發 現大家都是身手敏捷、生命力頑強,而且心細如塵。 有時候為了精益求精,同事之間有些小爭拗是平常 事,但當見到完成品誕生的那一刻,大家都會有種老 懷安慰的感覺。過程中會有解決不了的事嗎?當然也 有!幸好,電影是我們的良藥,只要走進戲院,在光 影之間好好地哭笑一場之後,精神便會抖擻起來,能 夠重新振作再接受挑戰! 光陰似箭,日月如梭,一眨眼在 MM 渡過 10 個年頭。 感受就像每日都有做不完的工作。工作雖然多(真心 多)但滿足感也是滿滿的! The thing is – the up and down, the shambles and joy, you are going to experience all of it – some slices of yourself you adore, and some you struggle to let in; still, they are equally important to you. The voyage is surprising as much as it affirms you. PS. After an edition in Spring and another in Summer, it’s finally Worlds. The “Third Generation Tsuchinoko” – the master con man hailed as a “hero” has died. Dako, Boku-chan and Richard all honed their skills under his tutelage. The title of “Tsuchinoko” is handed down in secrecy to the Confidence Man (scammer) with the greatest skill, setting the stage for a showdown between his three star pupils.

The contest will take place in the world heritage city of Valletta, Malta, an international gathering place for the rich and famous. Their target is the invaluable ancient Greek sculpture “Dancing Venus”, currently owned by a wealthy, retired Spanish gangster. Each scammer adopts a unique strategy in pursuit of the target, but the police and Interpol are also hot on their heels. Who will laugh last?! No one knows how the biggest scam in history will end!

Who is the true "hero" and what is the ultimate “truth”? The last con game, grand finale, Battle Royale... begins now!

Suddenly learning she is terminally ill, ‘Seyveon’ asks her husband, ‘Jin-bong’, the

task of helping her find her first love, and he unwillingly joins her search. Along their journey, ‘Se-yeon’ and ‘Jin-bong’ are reminded of the most glittering, beautiful moments of their lives.

The chaos began at the Winter Solstice dinner eight years ago. The father lost his temper, the son, not able to forgive his father, ran away from home. Eight years have passed, and the family's relationship is still cold and distant. A cousin returns to Hong Kong from England and hopes to gather everyone for a Winter Solstice dinner. The long-awaited gathering prompted everyone to rethink their relationships with family members. Some choose to leave, some are back. When things are about to fall apart, it might as well be an opportunity to mend connections.

T C 去年舉辦第十八屆的時候,香港亞洲 電影節已開始反思電影節應該如何面對「成 長」,又如何在「成人世界」之中自處。經過 這幾年,面對生活中的不穩定,似乎整個社 會都躊躇不安,不確定應該怎樣走下去。這 種心態我想在電影中也常常能見到。那麼電 影的角色到底是什麼呢?電影節應該是怎樣 的?就是要通過探究虛與實之間的關係來嘗 試回答這些問題,而選片也跟主題密切相關。 過去兩年,我們選片時沒有特意區分劇情片 和紀錄片,因為兩者在某種意義上互相重疊 的。劇情片雖然講述的大多是虛構的故事, 用幻想的、「虛」的方式談人的情感、關係和 困境,但其實也反映了當下的現實,例如主 人翁的經歷可能建基於現實社會情況,拍攝 的畫面也在不知不覺間紀錄社會環境(social landscape),讓觀眾看見某個城市的街道和 社區。劇情片藉此突出電影在人類社會肩負 的責任——紀錄,也就是捕捉「實」的瞬間。 這樣「虛」與「實」就已經融合在一起了。 M M 影迷想必最關心今年有甚麼好戲可看, 可透露一下嗎? T C 香港亞洲電影節一直以來都致力為本地 年輕導演提供平台,將他們的作品帶給觀眾。 《辣警甜妹大毒梟》 今年我們貫徹這個理念,選了四套本地作品 作開幕及閉幕電影,當中討論了許多你和我 此刻都能有共鳴的議題。開幕電影有《過時 · 過節》,是一套由毛舜筠﹑謝君豪﹑呂爵安﹑ 談善言和盧瀚霆等合演的親情電影;也有 《窄路微塵》,由張繼聰及袁澧林主演,講述 疫情期間,一個打工仔和另一個同樣是住劏 房的單親媽媽如何共同面對困難,繼而發展 出感情。而閉幕有《流水落花》,述說由鄭秀 文和陸駿光飾演的一對夫妻成為寄養家庭的 故事;還有張艾嘉和任達華主演的《燈火闌 珊》,講述一個霓虹燈管小工廠老闆去世,而 他的妻子想為他完成遺願望,維持工廠運作, 反思本地獨有文化的生存空間。 另外,我們也一如以往根據主題劃分了不 同專題放映部分。今年總共有兩個部分:第 一部分是《大佛普拉斯》導演黃信堯的紀錄 片。可能香港觀眾對黃信堯導演認識只限於 劇情片,但早期他也著眼於真實事件,拍了 非常多的紀錄片,為他的個人敘事風格奠下 基礎;第二個部分是庫爾德電影。庫爾德是 在中東的一個地區,而庫爾德人沒有自己的 國家,分散於土耳其、敘利亞、伊朗和伊拉 克。世界對庫爾德人的印象多是難民或戰爭 受害者,但脫離這些淒慘的印象,他們也是 人,他們在尋根和維護庫爾德文化的過程中, 也有自己說故事的方式。有如《辣警甜妹大 毒梟》(My Sweet Pepper Land)的西部片敘 事,有《同敘一村》(Neighbours)的黑色幽默, 也有《薔薇戰士》(Gulistan, Land of Roses) 中的性別平等意識。通過電影,可以打破人 們對某些社群的固有認知。 M M 植根香港,你們如何推廣亞洲電影? T C 作為香港的電影節,我們亦面向整個 亞洲。多年來,我們與其他亞洲地區的電影 節合作,建立一個能專門放映、討論及支 持亞洲電影(尤其是獨立電影)的平台。今 年我們與菲律賓 Cinemalaya 獨立電影節 (Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival)合作, 將會播放三部來自菲律賓的得獎獨立電影, 亦會邀得策展人和導演出席網上講座交流。 本地而言,為支持新人導演,香港亞洲電 影節在 2005 年創立「亞洲新導演獎」(New Talent Award),讓新人導演的第一部或第二 部劇情片作品競逐獎項。今年有來自緬甸、 韓國、黎巴嫩、日本、泰國和越南地區的電 影,題材廣泛,非常值得觀眾留意;另外更 有青少年評審和青少年影評項目,目的是鼓 勵新一代年輕觀眾可以來電影院看電影、感 受電影、討論電影及書寫影評。我們要求參 加者親自來影院觀看電影,來感受真正的電 影體驗,也感受和觀眾一起看電影的氣氛, 這對理解和感受影響而言非常重要,有助培 養新一代的影迷回歸實體的觀影模式。

Legendary artists Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael were not only celebrated painters and sculptors but great architects as well! As MOViE MOViE marks its 10th anniversary, we join hands with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (which is celebrating its 65th anniversary), to highlight the artistry of architects and architecture, for the special feature of LIFE IS ART Festival 2022. We live and breathe architecture everyday. In this year’s opening film for example DREAMING WALLS: INSIDE THE CHELSEA HOTEL, the hotel becomes a cultural icon with notable occupants like Andy Warhol, Janis Joplin and Patti Smith. Another opening film LIFE IS FRUITY features the 90 year old architect Shuichi Tsubata who lived out his life philosophy with his wife in his self-built paradise. As to how architects are inspired, perhaps one would get the answer by following the youngest Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Ryue Nishizawa on a road trip in Tokyo.

Apart from the special architecture feature, our special hand-picked art-based films include Hong Kong Dance Company’s award-winning LADY WHITE OF WEST LAKE, KILLING EVE’s Jodie Comer’s stunning debut stage play PRIMA FACIE (NT LIVE), Ralph Fiennes’s critically acclaimed STRAIGHT LINE CRAZY (NT LIVE), the awardwinning adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s BLIND WILLOW, SLEEPING WOMAN, as well as an absolute must-see: THE STORY OF FILM: A NEW GENERATION.

Returning to the big screen with a bang, are Cheung Cheuk’s BAMBOO THEATRE, and Heiward Mak’s FAGARA. The Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s critically acclaimed concert film BACK ON STAGE II (QUARANTINED!) will return with pianist Alexander Krichel LIVE from Germany — at the cinema! And what’s more, we have prepared limited edition fox plush toys for everyone who comes to THE LITTLE PRINCE special screening!

At the time of writing, rules for the pandemic seem to be easing. Our theme has thus evolved from last year’s “per aspera ad astra” to a more active “Build Our Dreams”. Through our screenings at the cinemas, on the TV channel and streaming platforms, plus all our related activities, let us dream of the Hong Kong we wish to build!

It takes merely a second to say the word “ten years”. A lot has happened in 10 years, but not enough for Wong Kar Wai to finish THE GRANDMASTER. It seems a lot for some of us, but it is just 1 hour in outer space in INTERSTELLAR…

Narratives are ever-changing. Since 2012, MOViE MOViE began as an international movie channel (Now TV CH. 116) and later launched its stateof-the-art cinemas at MOViE MOViE Cityplaza, MOViE MOViE Pacific Place and MOViE MOViE Taikoo, Li Qiantan, as well as the newly established MOViE MOViE Play on the service Now E. The unforgettable opening party of MOViE MOViE channel took place 10 years ago at Palace IFC, graced by the presence of none other than Keanu Reeves, whose documentary film “Side by Side” was premiered. The scene of Reeves, with film critic Shu Kei and actor Daniel Wu discussing the history and future of the cinema –marked the perfect beginning of what was in store – a splendid life filled with movies!

There is a strange but true phenomenon that people who live on the Hong Kong side are reluctant to cross the harbour. Our answer was to deliver the films from bc straight to their home TV sets – and we chose a new name MOViE MOViE (channel), which felt more direct and endearing.

However, bc remained our base for all our activities and events in the initial years –MOViE MOViE’s introductory programme “This is MOViE MOViE”, its first anniversary party, Anifest and Life is Art festivals were all held there. To promote our films, bc’s very versatile lobby went from housing a fashion runway one night to an airport with a drag show in another! All in all, MOViE MOViE originated from bc and will always be connected in a special way.

Do you sometimes feel that no one shares your appreciation for some films? At MOViE MOViE, we try to connect all film lovers! Apart from inviting film critics, directors and friends from cultural sectors to share their insights, we also try to connect via local artists and illustrators through our MOViE MOViE magazines. Not only do we love movies, we also “live” movies. Because we believe that we can learn so much from all the films we watch, we created our own series called WE LIVE MOVIES, where we invite famous personalities to share how they “live” movies. What is Johnnie To’s favourite quote? Which film is Karena Lam’s favourite ? What about Wong Chi-Chung? WE LIVE MOVIES never fails to strike a chord with movie lovers.

Another MOViE MOViE creation is a series called A MOViE DATE WITH EDWARD LAM. Edward chooses two seemingly unrelated films and they are screened as a double bill. Between the two films will be a deep and meaningful analyses/conversation session between the audience and Edward. The series has been a big hit and after the screening at the cinema, it is accessible on MOViE MOViE Channel and MOViE MOViE Play.

Why does MOViE MOViE present film festivals? MOViE MOViE believes that film festivals should connect people through films. Therefore, apart from film screenings, MOViE MOViE collaborates with partners and organises events relating to the theme of the festivals. For example, since the first Anifest (Animation film festival), MOViE MOViE has been collaborating with the Animation Support Program (ASP), placing works of local animators in the same screening as works by international animators, as well as organising pre-screening talks. This way, the local artists are able to come face-to-face with the audience while they get to know their work.

The other MOViE MOViE film festival Life is Art (LIA) goes beyond the cinema and into the community – with screenings, workshops and exhibitions at PMQ, Tai Kwun, JCCAC, Soho House, Oi!, Central Market, universities campuses, community centres and even bars !

Through our many activities and collaborations, we hope to show the different facets of the films which are applicable to our lives, e.g. one year, MOViE MOViE collaborated with the General Education Unit of the University of Hong Kong to host “Let’s Talk About Sex”. Through the festivals, we hope to slowly but surely build a bond through films, talks and the related activities.

MOViE MOViE was borne out of a love for films. 10 years ago, we went against the current to establish this foreign-language art-house movie channel. Though many thought that we would not survive, we were lucky to have had the experience of Broadway Cinematheque, which showed us that “difficult does not mean impossible”. With the establishment of the channel, we also founded MOViE MOViE Magazine, a physical magazine about films. Trudging along as a movie channel and a presenter of film festivals for five years, MOViE MOViE started its own cinema at Cityplaza in 2017. In the same year, it also founded MOViE MOViE PLAY, an OTT streaming channel. Later, with two more additional cinemas (at Pacific Place and Taikoo Li Qiantan in Shanghai), one could only describe the development as a lucky combination of fate plus labour of love, totally beyond anyone’s imagination. Though no one knows what the next 10 years would bring – one thing is certain : that MOViE MOViE will be ran by a group of film lovers for everyone who loves films. At your service, always FESTiVAL FESTiVAL We Live Movies! 4 說出來好像很肉麻,但 MM 真的是因為愛電 影而生。十年前,我們排除萬難才能成功推 出 MOViE MOViE 這條主打外語 Art-House 得 獎電影的頻道,但大家都認為太小眾,不可 能生存下去,猶幸有了 bc 經驗,難為不代 表不能。這十年來,MM 努力生存,而且要 跟著時代活得精彩。因此我們在推出頻道時, 同時為大家製作精美的實體紙本雜誌 MMM。 作為在電視收看的電影頻道,又在戲院及不 同文化場地舉行電影節與相關活動。然後在 2017 年太古城擁有了屬於自己品牌的戲院。 之後又跟 Now E 平台推出了不用簽長約的 OTT 串流服務 MOViE MOViE Play,因緣際會 又分別在金鐘及上海太古里開了新的 MOViE MOViE 戲院。坦白說,當中不少機會及發展 都是偶然與想像而來,再膽粗粗用 labour of love 而成。 2022 年,在 MOViE MOViE 成立十週年之際, 沒人能知道未來會如何,如電視頻道、戲院、 串流平台、雜誌的處境。但運作模式仍然是 一班愛電影的人為愛電影的人服務,希望大 家見字看電影,僅此而已。 因為愛,才有對不起。這裏從沒有將電影濃 縮成幾分鐘的影評。我們不只 Love movies, 還要 Live movies。因為電影教曉我們的事太 多,所以我們自家製作《電影式生活》,邀 請了一班喜愛電影的人跟我們分享他們的電 影式生活。哪一句電影對白叫杜琪峯最為深 刻?哪一齣電影是林嘉欣心頭好?黃志淙最 鍾情的又是甚麽?這個 MM 自製節目永遠令 影迷有所共鳴。 電影之外,林奕華為我們在戲院舉行「和電 影拍拖」,將兩部看似截然不同的電影並行放 映,再作分析。由於反應熱烈,我們其後還 製成自家節目讓大家可在 MOViE MOViE 頻道 及 MOViE MOViE Play 上慢慢欣賞。 為愛電影 電影式 生活分享
在香港有很多優秀的電影節,為甚麽 MM 還 要辦電影節?因為 MM 的電影節不只是千篇 一律放映電影的活動,而是電影式生活的實 踐,而重點是「聯繫」。譬如 Anifest 動畫祭 從第一屆起便與香港動畫支援計劃(ASP) 合作,將本地動畫師得獎短片放在國際長片 前播放,並安排動畫師在現場分享,令觀眾 有機會在大銀幕上看到本地佳作,長期埋首 電腦默默耕耘的創作人,亦獲得在現場得到 回饋的機會。「Life is Art」電影節的活動會 延伸至 PMQ、大館、JCCAC、Soho House、 油街實現 (oi!)、大學、社區中心等。我們更不 時與不同團體,在天台、草地、Loft、酒吧等 有趣地方辦社區放映,有年 MM 更在星街三 層建築舉行 Pop-up festival,去年我們還率 先在新開幕的中環街市作社區放映。 在設計週邊活動之餘,我們更重視能立體呈 現相關電影的面向,我們很感恩過去能與不 同單位合作,成功邀請了來自各界專業的嘉 賓為我們分享及舉辦活動。除了 MM 招牌 Festival「Life is Art 盛夏藝術祭」和 Anifest 以外,MM 亦曾與港大通識科合辦「Let’s Talk About Sex」以及與亞洲電影大獎(AFA) 舉行亞洲電影巡迴放映等。這些電影節不止 召集影迷,也希望就不同主題或議題,讓更 多公眾和朋友透過主題電影互相聯繫。

MM MOViE MOViE RW Renatus Wu (#1 – #55) HH Hazel Ho (#14 – #33) LY Yeung Lo Ying (#1 – #13) ES Elaine Sham (#29 – #51) JC Joycelyn Choi (#1 – #55) Editors Reunion 做紙本雜誌從來不易,到今天更是鳳毛麟角。 雖則 MOViE MOViE 自身的核心業務是電影頻 道及戲院,但為開台而出沒的《MMM》雜誌 也孜孜不倦地出版了十個年頭,超越 55 期。 今期借 10 年之期,邀請了多位歷年創作大腦 及主幹編輯跟大家回顧與展望。 MM 大家最深刻的一期《MMM》是? MOViE MOViE THIS IS MM 你們覺得《MMM》誕生的緣起和衍生的 意義是? JC 我覺得某程度上,《MMM》雜誌標誌着 MOViE MOViE 對電影的熱愛。當我以前 在香港藝術中心電影部工作時,當時覺 得《artslink 藝訊》和不同節目的特刊都 非常重要,因為 art house 電影並非如 商業片般廣泛報導和容易理解,因此需 要更多的資訊甚至導讀,讓觀眾由不同 的角度去了解,所以電影雜誌十分重要, 但香港正正就是缺少了這一部分,以前 的《電影雙週刊》亦已經消失,《MMM》 的出現就是一本由電影延伸至生活的見 證,一種代表 MOViE MOViE 的信念,走 到現在巳經第十個年頭。之前有傳媒朋 友稱讚《MMM》是有格調的香港電影雜誌, 令我非常開心,因為即使大部份刊物已 被數碼化,文字和實體文本的質感還是 無法被取代。 RW 《MMM》代表了一種精神,傳遞電影背後 的理念、信息,為影評人提供一個落腳 點,建立一個「for movie lovers」聚集 的平台,成為了 MOViE MOViE 展現電影 價值的媒介,以紙媒的方式帶出電影的 精神,更有韻味和收藏價值。 HH 《MMM》背後花了很多心機才能變成現在 這個模樣,我覺得不單是美觀,還代表 了一種精神。 ES 作為一個一直熱愛文字寫作的人, 《MMM》給予了我一個發聲的平台,看 到自己的文字被人欣賞亦給了我不少的 信心,當我成為主編時,涉獵的範疇也 更多,例如思考要向讀者傳遞甚麼訊息, 如何讓他們感受到《MMM》的靈魂等等, 代表住各人對電影的熱愛。《MMM》以實 體的方式存在,保留了一種溫度,亦是 作為一種青春的憑證,因為它記錄了我 人生不同的時候,讓熱愛電影的人互相 聯繫。 MM 你們對未來的《MMM》有甚麼期盼? RW 《MMM》其中一個價值就是連接熱愛電影 的人,所以我非常期待有新的元素出現, 因為創意某程度上是代表住一種年輕的 心態,而觀賞電影文化亦受各方面的因 素如疫症等影響,而香港甚至是世界也 出現了很巨大的變化,所以希望電影和 《MMM》的內容可以繼續紀錄時代的變遷, 價值就可以得以延續。我認為電影雜誌 對我來說等於“take a red pill”,由電影 重返現實,面對社會。如果有一天紙本 內容被數碼化成一個 PDF,那就是“take a blue pill”。兩者其實並沒有衝突。除 了讀者,紙本亦連結了編輯和設計的人, 承載了人與人之間的感情。 LY 我認為是保持初心,雖然不知道下一個 十年會有甚麼變化,但我希望 MOViE MOViE 仍然可以發揮其精神和價值。 ES 我希望 MOViE MOViE 可以繼續存在,在 這個數碼化的時代還能以紙本形式存在 並非易事,保留一種質感和溫度,繼續 存在即是代表初心仍在,我希望每一次 路過戲院的時候,還可以看到《MMM》 的存在。 JC 如果 MOViE MOViE 是一封由喜歡電影的 人寫給電影的情書,那《MMM》紙本就 是一封情人的手寫情書,電子的情書永 遠無法取締其價值和溫度。 MM 《MMM》有甚麼特色? Horror must be the center of Horror movies, but why would anyone want to be scared? What is the point of getting scared? And if horror is the essence of horror movie, what is the appeal of horror movie to those Horror-lovers who are nonchalant towards these horror elements?

Sex and violence are never deemed as acceptable in our society. Ever since the Enlightenment, reasoning and logic has become the central value of all humans. We believe that our faculty of reasoning is what distinct us from other animals. Why then, has the war never changed after the Enlightenment? Is war logical and reasonable? Human behavior could not be explained by pure logic…

Freud believes that reasoning was never an inherent trait of human being, it is a learned concept attainted by human when they enter civilization. All of us in the civilization is inhibiting our primal instinct in order to fit in our society. Using his theory, we can deduce that there must be some desire deep within our heart, that are unacceptable in society. Horror movie is a socially acceptable channel in which these desires can be expressed.

OCTOBER 「鬼片」的中心似乎就是驚嚇, 愈恐怖便愈好看。但是一個人無 端白事又怎會想被人嚇呢?到底 恐怖題材的電影是為何存在,又 有何吸引呢?再者,如果恐怖電 影的重點在於驚嚇,那些不怕嚇 的恐怖愛好者為何還如此鍾情於 恐怖電影? 血肉橫飛,性與暴力,這些都是 不被社會接受的價值。自啟蒙 以來,理性成為了人類的中心價 值。我們相信,人之所以與其他 動物不同,就是因為我們一切都 依照理性行事。可是,理性不能 解釋人類種種的反理性行為:為 甚麼會戰火不斷⋯⋯ 精神分析學之父佛洛依德認為理 性並非人的本性,而是每一個人 為了進入社會而習得的概念。所 有文明人都是通過壓抑他們的動 物性內進入社會的。如果他的分 析是準確的話,我們每一個人心 中都有那些不被社會接納的渴 望,而恐怖電影就是一個受大眾 接受的渠道,讓我們好好抒發那 些不可告人,甚至連自己都不清 楚的欲望。 跟據這個理解的話,就算「鬼片」 不恐怖也好,只要他能滿足到我 們某些隱藏的需求,就可以算是 功德完滿的恐怖片了。不知以下 這幾套又能不能滿足大家呢?

Then, what makes a good horror movie is dependent on the viewer, not the text itself. If it can give you a channel for expression, it is a good horror movie in your eyes. Some may enjoy the blood splattering and helpless scream in slasher movie, while some may simply enjoy the gruesome reality. Different people would have different desire, and the horror genre embraces all.

魅來世界: 娃鬼回魂

Childhood Trauma is a key concept in Freud: he suggests that some traumatic events in our childhood is the cause of psychological diseases like neurosis and psychosis. There is one movie series that causes traumas in many children – CHILD’S PLAY. In 1988, they infused the serial killer into a doll, and it has changed how we see a doll ever since. Entering the age of technological advance, Chucky is backed with AI technology. He is ready to slaughter once again, stronger than ever.

The high-tech Chucky learns that humans have a keen interest in seeing people getting amputated in horror movie. To amuse his owner, Chucky performs what his owner likes most right in front of his eyes: he slaughtered a dog with blood splashing all over the place. Witnessing the whole process, the protagonist eyes are filled with disgust. As a viewer, do you enjoy all the blood and killing like the protagonist?

This is how movie illustrates our socially unacceptable desire and turn into mildly. Movie creates distances, so that we can enjoy it with ease. But if we see it right in front of us, we would not be so happy, would we?

Never too many movies 電影像大海,花多眼亂。MOViE MOViE 頻道 每月星期日晚上十點,為影迷而設的首映星 期天,為大家搜羅全球最新的人氣電影,不 少更是獨家首映。MOViE MOViE 更不時與戲 院的淵源,更讓我們成功與戲院一起同步放 映電影,讓不能進入戲院的影迷足不出戶也 有新鮮好戲。 講到佛洛依德怎能不提起童年和創傷。童年 時的一些創傷性事件會影響一生的發展,導 致各種的精神問題。大家的童年陰影,顛覆 了大家對「公仔」的觀感,娃娃殺人狂又回 來了! 在 1988 年的時候,他們透過洋娃娃 Chucky 勾起大家對玩具的恐懼。來到 21 世紀,他們 決定把系列重啟,與時並進,幫 Chucky 引 進 AI 科技。 有了先進科技的 Chucky,透過 Deep learning,發現人類看血腥暴力電影時會情 緒高漲,決定有樣學樣,周圍大開殺界,務 求得到主人的歡心。不知道大家看到血肉橫 飛的場面時,會像那些一樣興奮,還是像主 角那樣感到嘔心? 這部電影正正體現了那種不被社會接納的渴 望。當在電影中看到時,我們或許可以看到 格格大笑。但當這些事真的發生在我們面前 時,我們還笑得出來嗎?

In an attempt to wake her mother in coma up, she participates in a psychotherapeutic experiment where she needs to enter the unconscious mind of her mother. This is also where she encounters the demon and discover everything behind the conspiracy…

Darkness has always been the origin of our fear. When we stay awake overnight, hallucination starts to come in. We will start seeing things: is there a ghost behind? What’s that noise in the kitchen? We become very sensitive to the everything, fearing the unknown, the uncertain…

This is the job of THE VIGIL, to overwatch the corpses of the deceased overnight. Is it just the wind, or is there a ghost lurking behind…

The scariest movie need not a ghost. It is the atmosphere, the suspense that fear the most.

Ghost and spirit is the most essential element for a classic horror movie. In Mary, we can see a terrifying spirit wreaking havoc for the family, trapping them in the perpetual hell in the middle of the sea. The most classic, traditional horrific cinematic experience.

No one knows whether there is spirit or not. Science seems to have proven it to be non-existent, but people still insist its unutterable existence. Horror movie is playing with our uncertainty and invokes fear of the imperceptible.

Now we enter another realm of the horror: the body horror. There is no jump scare nor spirit, but viewer at the Cannes still fainted watching it. The horror lies in the bodily pain portrayed on the screen. TITANE uses the Sci-Fi genre to explore gender issues beyond binary and beyond bodies. It deepens our discussion on sexuality and gender through imaginations.

Movie as an art medium helps us to express and articulate thought that are not socially acceptable. By putting it in a film, it re-enters the eyes of the public and evokes public discussion. Only through discussion can we build our insight and build a better world for everyone.

MOViE MOViE THE VIGIL DEMONIC TITANE MARY 黑暗從來都是恐懼的根源。在漫漫長夜中不 眠不休,相信人的精神狀態也會變得不穩定, 對四周的噪音變得敏感,進入疑神疑鬼,草 木皆兵的狀態。 而守靈人的工作就正正是在這個狀態下看守 着先人的靈體。到底那些風吹草動是惡靈作 怪,還是其實是自己多疑而已。 最恐怖的,往往不是惡靈的本身,而是 jump scare 前的那段漫長的 suspense。 表意識,潛意識這些概念其實都是由佛洛依 德首先提出的。我們不為人知,甚至連自己 都不自覺的欲望全都藏在潛意識裏,可見潛 意識就是人類最黑暗的一面,而《潛行異境》 要潛入的正正就是這個恐怖之地。 主角為了拯救昏迷不醒的母親,決定參與精 神治療的實驗,潛進母親的潛意識,卻意外 喚醒了惡靈。原來一切都是神秘組織的陰謀, 潛藏在母女間的愛恨情仇原來早有分曉。 它的恐怖與別不同,沒有 jump scare,也沒 有靈體,卻在康城首映中有觀眾受到視覺沖 擊而暈倒,甚至有至少 20 人中途離場。 它的恐怖在於身體性痛楚所帶來的不安感, 透過令人難以接受的題材,利用電影本身虛 構的本質來探討性別二元以外的世界,深化 當今對性別的認知,完全體現出想像的必要。 電影這種藝術媒介,正正就可以把這些難以 接受,難以啟齒的想法具體化,並將大眾的 目光放在這些被忽略,但又無比重要的議題 帶給觀眾,然後觀眾又通過反思和討論,建 構新的洞見。 「打邊爐」最重要的是爐,那麼「鬼片」最重 要的當然是鬼了。《鬼船瑪莉號》上發生了一 連串靈異事件,本來一望無際的自由之海變 成了碎心裂膽的無盡地獄。一系列的超自然 事件,最直接,最傳統的驚嚇體驗。 沒有人知道到底有沒有靈體,但上一輩的至 理名言告訴我們:「寧可信其有,不可信其 無。」在我而言,這句話大概的意思就是我也 不能證明它的存在,不過你必須尊重它存在 的可能性,不然你的不敬就會招來殺生之禍。 「鬼片」的恐怖之處就是在於我們也不知道鬼 是 fictional 還是真實存在的。 ALSO AVAILABLE ON SEE IT ON

Collingwood said art is the place where the author recollects his feeling and puts them in place. Cines Bell said it is not the content that makes art, it is the significant form that makes art. These are fancy and all, but what is art?

THE HOLE

The artists are the adventurer of our culture, for they delve into unknown places through art. But this movie is about the actual adventurer, a team of speleologists ventures into the deepest cave in Europe in the Southern part of Italy.

Ironically, civilization always reaches for the stars. In an attempt to conquer the sky, sky is the limit for our skyscrapers. On the contrary, 700 meters beneath our earth, not a trace of civilization can be found. Maybe only in the abyss can we find peace at last.

In the end, we still don’t know what art is. There are too many forms of art, it is impossible to put a definition on all of them. Maybe we should just focus on appreciating and exploring the infinite possibility of art through these movies.

THE STORY OF FILM: A NEW GENERATION

Given that Life is Art and life is movie. Thus, movie must be art.

When the text seems too trivial, I love reading other critics’ comments on it. It often gives me new insight about the text, things that I have missed out We all know about movie, at least we think so. Through the commentary of Mark Cousins, we would know more about movie and its current development. With the new age,

we have a new set of problems. Is digitalized movie a curse or a blessing? Can video shot on an IPhone be regarded as film?

There are lots of things in life that we thought we knew. After listening to the critics, we may find out that we know nothing. I’d say that’s the fun of learning. As you learn more and more, you discover how less you know. So you dive deeper into the sea of knowledge.

MOViE MOViE THIS IS MM 在你眼中,坂本龍一是如何看待音樂的? CC 坂本龍一全程投入在他的創作,不會輕 言放棄,即時現在帶病在身,他都一直 在推出新的作品,燃燒生命來把他的熱 情融入他的作品當中。 在《坂本龍一:CODA》裏亦都有提到他 為《戰場上的快樂聖誕》(1983)配樂時 的經歷。本來導演大島渚是想找他做男 主角而已,但正因為他自身對創作充滿 熱誠,所以他就說:如果你讓我為電影 配樂,我就接下這個工作。正正就是這 部作品感動了很多人,使他漸漸邁向大 師之路。現在人人都記得這首經典,他 每次開音樂會都一定要演這首歌(笑) 接下來另一個導演貝托魯奇又找上了坂 本龍一,為他的新作《末代皇帝溥儀》 (1987)配樂和客串。其實該戲已經有 配樂,但是導演又覺得未夠好,臨急臨 忙找來了坂本龍一。當時他為創作盡心 盡力,遠赴到中國錄音及指揮等等,最 終又做出了另一首經典配樂。這部戲真 是前無古人,後無來者,竟然一部外語 片可以在紫禁城中取景。電影中的配樂 亦讓坂本龍一贏得了奧斯卡最佳配樂獎。 他不單只是為電影配樂,他更是在用音 樂把電影的層次提昇。每每聽到他的音 樂,那個電影場景就馬上浮現出來。 MM 那麼你最欣賞坂本龍一的那方面? CC 我想是他對自己作品的執着吧。之前 他一直都是在為他人配樂,但這次在 《async》(2017)他在大病初癒時,用音 樂記載那些經歷,再舉辦全球網上徵稿, 邀請大家把他的音樂配上短片。香港也 有參賽者勝得優異獎。在這裏有一首叫 《Fullmoon》的曲目,當中就有小說朗讀 的部分。因為他想加一把國語的女聲, 所以就找我幫手。我都找了很多很多人, 一直都達不到他的要求,可見他嚴謹之 處。他很清楚自己想要甚麼,但同時亦 會接受他人的意見。後來我就提議:不 如也加入廣東話的聲音吧。他真的答應 了我的請求。他在每一項創作中都傾盡 心力,你能夠在他的作品中感受到他生 命的温度。視覺與聽覺的契合是能夠打 動人心,我認為這是超越了理性思想所 能做到的。他是一個十分貼地的大師, 在日本 311 之後,他專程從紐約飛到日本, 在災民避難中心中演奏,為大家打氣。 MM 我們都知道你和坂本龍一私下是好朋友, 你可以分享一下相處的趣事嗎? 電影止於 阿巴斯 影評人,浸大新媒體及影視創意寫作課程主任 Through The Olive Trees《橄欖樹下的情人》 25/11 (Fri) 22:00 Where Is My Friend’s Home?《踏破鐵鞋無覓處》 4/11 (Fri) 22:00 Homework《家家家課》 11/11 (Fri) 22:00 And Life Goes On《春風吹又生》 18/11 (Fri) 22:00 不論你是否正在學習電影,就算只是一個戲 迷都好,假如在世界電影地圖上俯瞰,伊朗 電影是非常重要的一塊拼圖,而伊朗導演阿 巴斯基阿魯斯達米(Abbas Kiarostami)的 電影,也許就是那些不看會後悔的類別。是 的,有些導演的電影,沒看過,是會後悔的。 MOViE MOViE 的片單中,按年代,由遠至近, 順序有《踏破鐵鞋無覓處》(1987)、《家家家課》 (1989)、《春風吹又生》(1992)、《橄欖樹下 的情人》(1994)及《廿四格》(2017)。當然 可以順序看,跟著阿魯斯達米去走,一路走 來,就能看到他所關注的歷史、環境與人文 課題。不過,如果認為歷史觀並非必要,我 會建議中間切入,先看《橄欖樹下的情人》。 《橄欖樹下的情人》最著名的作法是,模糊了 一樣事物叫虛構與真實。這一切源於阿巴斯 對電影的看法,「電影只不過是虛構的藝術, 它從不按照實際的樣子來描繪真實」,於是他 便以這部戲玩變法,透過地震之後情侶迅速 成婚的虛構劇情,布下層層真實的疑陣,以 真實覆蓋虛構,這部後設的戲中戲,以劇組 人員拍戲為故事骨幹,卻又把男女演員之間 的真實情感往事紀錄下來,變成劇情核心。 看時看,一定要看到最後,最後的彩蛋,是 如詩如畫的伊朗山區 Z 型道路風景遠鏡,及 觀眾久等的橄欖樹林,樹林裡的人能否有情 人終成眷屬呢?——看罷這部戲,你自然會 想追看前作《春風吹又生》,因為男主角原本 來自這部戲。 《春風吹又生》的情侶,本來繼續參演《橄欖 樹下的情人》,後來女的嫁人推演,換了另 一個女的,卻原來又是男的曾經真實暗戀的 人。所以,兩部戲的關係密不可分,向後回 追看,趣味更盎然。作為阿巴斯的地震前篇, 戲中導演帶著攝製隊,去到地震山區,尋找 一位小演員。鏡頭所見山區民宿幾近被摧 毀,環境如是,人民卻非如此,人縱使無法 與大自然較量,但片中的凡人默默重建,以 時間消融災難,展現出平凡但厚實的人文力 量——看罷這部戲,你自然會再想追看前作 《踏破鐵鞋無覓處》,因為小演員原本又來自 這部戲。 踏破鐵鞋的人,正是這位孩子,戲中講他為 了歸還家課簿給同校好友,不理父母勸止, 一個人,兩條腿,一步一步向著山的另一邊 村落走過去。山區之路當然不好走,但小孩 子的單純潔淨,過濾了地震後揚起的滾滾泥 塵。感動嗎?大抵阿巴斯不是要你哭,他只 是想把事物沉澱,然後水落石出。由此,便 浮顯了他渾然天成的「Koker 三部曲」。Koker 是位於伊朗北部的村莊,他拍完「踏破鐵鞋」 之後,伊朗便發生大地震,全國三萬多人喪 生,便衍生了「尋找小演員」,及「橄欖樹」 之愛情。 《家家家課》可視為是《踏破鐵鞋無覓處》延 伸的紀錄片,紀錄伊朗山區小孩學習生活, 訪問了不少孩子,以孩子的學習狀況,透視 伊朗教育問題,問題當然天天都多,難得小 孩子都直率有趣,其中一個說自己的志願是 長大後殺死伊拉克總統薩達姆。 法國導演尚盧高達曾於 1990 年訪談中說,電 影始於格里菲斯(D.W. 「無人可在死前重生」一百二十七年前,盧米埃兄弟︵ The Lumière brothers︶ 為人類建立一個嶄新的世界,他們帶來影像創作的革 命。該片只有一個鏡頭,是放在火車軌道旁拍攝。盧 米埃兄弟在短時間之內,就把這此影片發行到世界各 地。在一兩年內,世界各地的觀眾大多都看過︽火車進 站︾︵ L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat ︶。這片 片長僅五十秒,但卻改變了未來,把這個名為第七藝 術的文化孕育於眾人的雄奇想像之中。直至一九二七年的那天,華納兄弟殺死了﹁電影﹂。 華納兄弟以︽爵士歌伶︾︵ The Jazz Singer ︶為世間 帶來有聲電影。有聲電聲的面世把當時電影的形式消 滅殆盡。﹁電影﹂的確死了,但也隨即得以重生。後來, ﹁電影﹂都不斷被新思維新技術所殺死,如彩色片的出 現殺死了黑白片時代的﹁電影﹂;數碼拍攝電影殺死了 菲林拍攝的﹁電影﹂;串流平台也殺死了戲院放映的﹁電 影﹂。這是一種深具革命性的過程,舊有的被毀滅,新 生的被建立起來,也迫使我們重新估計舊有價值的意 義,使我們更容易在永恆的文化洪流中建立新的規範。 藝 術 評 論 家 占 士 · 艾 金 斯 ︵ James Elkins ︶曾指出繪 畫史在一定程度上就是顏料化學成分變化的歷史。革 新技術的出現,為藝術帶來新的想像。就如同從具像 到抽象,從古典藝術到現代藝術,不少文化悲觀主義 的評論也曾在時代變革之中明言藝術已死,然而,革 命性的藝術形式卻未因為舊時代藝術的消逝而亡,反而於舊時代的遺體上重生。 同樣地,文化悲觀主義者預言了電影的消亡,原來 的﹁電影﹂又再一次死了,但新的幼苗卻如雨後春筍般 萌發出來。電影的歷史,就是充滿著不斷的革新技術 和變換風格的歷史。不同技術、新設備以及新式敘事 意識的引入,不停的改變電影的視聽效果,從而激發 銀幕作品的進一步變革。 正如當年有聲片、彩色片以 及電視的問世,賜予電影多不勝數的死亡,但也為電影帶來多不勝數的革命性重生。 這就如一個與同一性概念有關的古老哲學問題 ﹁忒修斯之船﹂所爭議的一樣,如果一艘船的零件,包 括船體、龍骨、桅杆、錨以及帆等等,都被一一換掉。 揚帆啟航。 共同策展人
R 我想先問大家一個問題,電影節對大家而 言是一回怎樣的事?對我而言,電影節就像日本廟會;大家穿起和服逛街、撈金魚、欣賞煙花等。 這些事情乍看跟廟會毫無關係,但參與者都是附 近的街坊,他們會認為這是一年一度給大家相聚 的活動,如同社區維繫的展現。如果戲院對影迷 而言是一個聖域的話,那去電影節的肯定就是熱 愛電影的人。這不代表他需看片無數,但起碼渴 望參與其中。所以,我們希望今次電影節有種平 易近人的感覺,讓大家相聚看電影,重現人們相 聚時那種高興的感覺。 M 電影世界如同汪洋大海,電影節便擔當起 海上引導並集結人們的角色。電影節就是一個讓 大家身處其中而享受的社群,好讓這種感覺得以 延展。世界這麽大,喜歡電影的人共聚於同一空 間。策劃者往往主導了電影節的方向,我們看一 部作品時應宏觀整個組合:例如某電影節選了十 部電影,這些電影的排列都有其考慮,故此我們 可謂非常重大。 J 果有一個主題性的電影節把它們湊合一起,如專 屬的紀錄片電影節,那就有機會能看到不同的紀錄片。其實,我們最初籌辦 Life is Art 電影節 也是抱著同樣的想法。起初念頭的源起是 Amy Winehouse 的紀錄片,如果這套電影就這樣直接 放到戲院放映,可能就一下子消失了,所以我們 忽發奇想:﹁不如舉辦一個能宣揚不同類型藝術的電影節可行嗎?﹂於是,︽ Amy ︾這齣紀錄片觸 發了我去構想 Life is Art 電影節。我認為有些電 影節與 curator 本身所關注的主題有關,例如我 就很喜歡紀錄片和不同藝術的創作。對我而言, 電影節最重要的是建立聯繫,電影與人、創作者與觀眾,更能藉此變化延伸出更多不同的活動, 由最簡單的座談會延伸到工作坊及展覽,整件事 因而變得完整。看電影不應只是一個看完就拍拍 屁股走人的商業交易,應該是可觸動心靈、與人交流並分享感受的旅程。 R 我們起初從十週年紀念方面構思,但適逢 MOViE MOViE 生日偏偏遇上戲院閉關時期,加上 近年很多人和事消失了,我們到底失去了甚麽? 為什麽一定要去戲院看電影?假如真的沒有了戲 院,那電影會否徹底消失?某程度上,這些問題啓發我們從這角度舉辦這個電影節。 J 英女王逝世時,有傳媒問 “ Do you think we’ve really understand what we’ve lost here? ” 。 同樣地,我覺得假如沒有了戲院又或者電影時, 大家又是否真正知道自己失去了甚麽?我有時覺 得香港人慣性追求最新、最快的東西,但可能還 沒仔細看清一件事物時,便已物色另一新事物 了。很多人覺得現在電影到網上看就可以,但其 實對我來說就像是以為在家中進食外賣,跟在餐 廳享用食物一樣,兩者顯然並非相等,卻可互補 共存。 M 其實這是各人對電影有不同的認知。﹁ MOViE is Dead. Long Live MOViE. ﹂,這矛盾般的構思源 於我們希望大眾明白電影非單純的實體,而是一 種意識。舊有意識需被淘汰,新的意識才會來 電影是不同的體驗。 J MOViE MOViE Play 串流的跨平台電影節,使我 疫情肆虐,曾令戲院長期關閉,不禁讓人再次討 論戲院和電影的意義和關係。過去突如其來的驟 變,讓我們無所適從,失去了很多,同時也得到 了許多。適逢 MOViE MOViE 十週年慶典, MOViE MOViE 邀請了 The Kongner 評論人米迦策劃了 ﹁ MOViE is Dead. Long Live MOViE. ﹂主題的電影 節,與大家一起追古論今,同步革新。米迦、是次影展的創作總監胡卓斌及 MOViE MOViE 人 Joycelyn Choi 在今期特意促膝對談,評論人、 文化媒體創辦人一同討論電影,講解精選片單,以及舉辦是次電影節的初衷和理念。 M Micah The Kongner 創辦人 R Renatus Wu Edited 負責人 J Joycelyn Choi —— MOViE MOViE 總經理 所選的片單,裡面包含新舊的電影。我覺得看電 影要貪新愛舊,所以今次的片單兩者兼得,就好 像認識一個人愈久,你就愈能發掘出他更多的面向。不如米迦講解一下你選片的方針? M 我的片單與﹁改變﹂的理念有關,不是純粹 科技上的,更是看待事物角度上的改變,盡可能 呈現電影的另一面。譬如奉俊昊的黑白版︽上流 寄生族︾到底想表達甚麽思想、︽三島由紀夫最後 思辨︾紀錄片所描述的文化思潮,其作品如何挑 戰 日 本 當 時 文 化 和 社 會 風 氣 、 ︽ 惡 與 他 們 的 距 離 ︾ 反映導演在極權環境下拍攝過程的挑戰、 A24出 品的︽別告訴她︾和︽月亮喜歡藍︾都表現出美國 華裔及非裔等弱勢社群面對的處境。這都是社會 需要知道的事情,很多人覺得電影是傳遞某種意識,實情是先有某種意識才有某部電影的誕生, 從而反映社會現實。所以,我重申整個片單的選 擇就基於﹁改變﹂;若果電影的想法要改變,那 就必須要先死而後生。 R 除了戲院放映,還有數場社區放映的電影, 為何要在社區辦放映? M 這與建構社群文化有關,除了維繫,更要拓 展。我們辦社區放映想讓觀眾明白並非只能到戲院看電影,還可讓自己身處熟悉的環境看電影。 戲院礙於場次的時間限制,映後談的時間通常很 短,但放在社區就能延長討論的時間。我們還有 Podcast 活動,主要講述本人想像中電影應具備 哪些條件,嘗試囊括電影不同範疇,例如電影發 行工序及規劃。這些東西與口中的電影節有莫大 關係。這如同廟會一樣,給我們一個機會去了解 周遭的東西。 J 卓,不如介紹一下今次電影節的視覺及設計 風格? I love this biopic about a visionary modern dancer who moved to France and revolutionized her art. I also chose this title to pay tribute to Gaspard Ulliel who passed away this year. The actor came to Hong Kong in 2014 for the promotion of “Saint Laurent”, and attended the Hong Kong French Film Festival.

France has always inspired filmmakers from all around the globe. No wonder that one of Poland’s most acclaimed filmmakers shot and coproduced a movie in France.

He is also an inspiration for us all to keep our creativity and to be more inclusive. This is an important film on the birth of the Act Up movement, a grassroots NGO led by the LGBTQ+ community to fight against the AIDS pandemic. Aids remains a major global public health issue which is still too often a source of discrimination. The Consulate supports the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival for which this title was the opening film in 2017. By picking this movie, I would like to pay tribute to one of France’s greatest directors who passed away last month. He shaped French New Wave and forever changed the history of cinema.
The movie depicts the way the manager of a factory in France decides to help workers who face dismissal. Vincent Lindon’s stellar performance struck me.
