The ISPO Award is recognized as a global driver of innovation for the sports industry. The top products of 2024 will be honored this December at ISPO Munich. The award winners embody the latest trends and innovations.

From December 3 to 5, the latest trends and innovations in the sports industry will be showcased at the exhibition halls in Munich. Exhibitors from around the world will present their newest collections and product innovations at ISPO Munich. A highlight of the three-day event each year is the exhibition of the ISPO Award winners, where attendees can explore the most innovative products in the sports industry. These awards reflect the current capabilities of the sports goods industry in terms of product design and materials across textiles, hardware, and digital solutions. They are seen as a global driver for future industry developments.

For brands, innovation is crucial and indispensable—whether in textiles, where significant material advancements are ongoing, or in the integration of AI across all sectors of the sports industry. Each year, it is exciting to see which breakthroughs from various R&D labs are introduced to the public through the ISPO Award.

SUSTAINABILITY SETS THE STANDARD

With new EU legislation, the development of sustainable, functional materials has taken another step forward. Progress in chemical treatments is notable, and PFC-free DWRs and textiles are now standard, no longer a groundbreaking innovation. PFC-free is now a must-have, not just a nice-to-have—a shift impacting companies beyond Europe. “Sustainability is increasingly the norm, leading consumers to expect it as the standard,” says jury member Dr. Regina Henkel, a textile expert who closely monitors the market.

However, “standard” does not mean stagnation. This year’s ISPO Award jury meetings revealed exciting textile innovations. Circularity, a top industry theme, is gaining momentum through increased use of mono-materials. “Progress is evident, including the use of mono-materials and bio-based fabrics like wool-Tencel blends,” notes Dr. Henkel. A minitrend is also emerging in CO2-binding materials.

Top marks go to collaborations between manufacturers and major chemical and tech companies, such as BASF, which are accelerating innovation. For instance, new midsole foam blends in running shoes and the emerging insulation material Aerogel stem from such partnerships. “These collaborations allow for faster improvements in performance and enhanced product functionality,” Dr. Henkel explains.

Notably, the performance of sustainable products, especially those made from recycled fibers, has advanced considerably. Upcycling is a top trend, and recycled membranes with up to 30k/30k performance are now possible, equaling the functionality of non-recycled counterparts. However, this may require opting for more costly materials, impacting retail prices.

Yet recycling alone won’t solve future challenges—a reality more manufacturers are embracing in their collections. Natural fibers and biodegradable sports textiles, either in pure or blended forms, are increasingly seen among ISPO Award submissions.

notes another trend: “We’re seeing a growing focus on technical sports products designed specifically for women, such as soccer cleats with truly unique constructions. This development goes beyond simple adjustments, with thoughtful designs for fit and functionality.”

MULTI-USE REMAINS A TOP TREND

The trend toward versatile products reflects consumers’ desire for practical, everyday solutions. Multifunctional hardware products are especially well-received in Asia, while in Europe, this trend primarily focuses on multi-use textiles. “High-quality, performance materials and designs are adapted as everyday fashion, appealing to a broader audience,” says industry journalist Dr. Martina Wengenmeir.

Clothing items like jackets are ideal for both daily and outdoor use, with a growing variety of products available. Multi-purpose products, such as backpacks, are also gaining popularity in commuting. “Urban Outdoor” continues to trend, particularly in Asian markets, where jackets and products combine strong fashion appeal with outdoor performance.

In design, advancements go beyond aesthetics, including increased repairability and specific textile designs for women. These innovations consider unique insulation and sweat zones. Jury member Dr. Wengenmeir

FOCUS: INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY

A trend primarily emerging from Asia is making its way to Europe: the integration of technology in clothing, such as sensors and heat-regulating apps. These innovations automatically detect body temperature and adjust garments, like jackets, accordingly. The personalization of clothing through technologies like AI and sensors for temperature regulation is seen as a potential growth area. However, sustainability concerns are notable, as these technologies often require additional resources. As a result, demand for such innovations may remain limited outside of Asian markets.

Nevertheless, Asian manufacturers can be regarded as trendsetters for the Western market, especially as they make significant strides in sustainable materials and new production techniques.

All products awarded an ISPO Award will be showcased in a dedicated exhibition area at ISPO Munich in Hall B1.

Come along for a look behind the scenes on the ISPO Award Jury’s quest for the best products and innovations leading up to ISPO Munich 2024.

Each and every round, it is exciting to see which new innovations and products from the sports and outdoor industries will pass the hands of our ISPO Award Jury - before the winners are shown at ISPO Munich. And the range of new products submitted in the run up to ISPO Munich and the next order season again did not disappoint. Instead, it demonstrated the impressive innovative spirit of the outdoor and sporting goods industry.

For the last two jury meetings in 2024, the jury met at the beautiful »Das Walchsee Lakeside«, right next to the lake and surrounded by mountains. As always, the six-member expert jury consisted of industry professionals and enthusiastic athletes from the ISPO Collaborators Club, who are selected anew each time and incorporate the consumers’ perspective into the award selection process.

Besides discussing and getting a close look at the products firsthand before judging, there was also some movement, wellness, team and mountain activities - and as always, lots of great food.

Our independent editors meet on a quarterly basis with selected consumer experts from the the ISPO Collaborators Club. The most coveted rating, “Approved by Consumer,” is thus ensured by the participation of our opinion leaders. This argument helps during sell-in. The awarding procedure is standardized and enables an objective evaluation.

THE ADVANTAGES AS AN ISPO AWARD WINNER:

Each ISPO Award Winner receives its own award label for placement in print and web, e.g. social media, advertising, POS/displays, website, email signature, lookbook.

2. ISPO.com review article.

Expansion for a healthier future

“Our goal is to reduce global overconsumption of sugar by rethinking simple thing. Why do we drink so much sugar in the first place?” says Jaroslav Beck, co-founder and creator of CANS who previously successfully scaled the game Beat Saber which was acquired by Meta in 2019. After the brilliant market launch in the Czech Republic in August 2023 with over 800,000 cans already sold, which corresponds to a saving of 26.4 tons of sugar compared to conventional soft drinks, the launch in Slovakia followed in July 2024.

Now Germany is the next step in CANS’ expansion with the mission to create and grow the non-sweet drinks category.

CANS is available in the three flavors “Lemon”, “Cherry” and “Apple” in the CANS online store in Germany. Distribution in brick-and-mortar stores is currently being rolled out.
